You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Today is the fourth day of your week of trial at the Grey Watchtower. Today, you will begin your journey into the swamp, where you are to travel to the old wall which once formed the border between Belmore and the Forsaken Lands and light the two beacons atop the wall, then return to the Grey Watchtower safely. You've spent the last three days preparing for this journey, you are now ready to venture into the frozen swamp.

The whole watchtower is gathered outside this morning, where you and everyone else are about to head into the swamp. Counting you, there are 70 people in your party, 20 of which came in as reinforcements from the Order of the Righteous Sword yesterday evening. You examine the map you were given by Captain Aleksander, trying to plan a course towards the beacons.

“That map was made a year ago by our scouts. No telling how much of it is still accurate, but it's better than nothing.” Captain Aleksander informs you, pointing to the various marks and labels placed on the map. The map is hand drawn, so it's likely not completely accurate, but it's good enough. There are also many notes left on the map detailing areas of interest, such as hideouts left behind by the scouts and known hunting grounds for the swamp's inhabitants.

Looking at the map, you see four possible courses you could take to make it to the beacons. One will take you through an area marked “Burrow Fiend Fields”, while the second will take you close to an area marked “Wyvern Den”. The third route will take you through a large area denoted as “Giant Hunting Grounds”, and the last will allow you to circumvent most dangers, but you will have to make a forced march to still make it to the beacon on time.

You take a moment to weigh your options, then make a decision.

>Burrow fiend fields
>Wyvern den
>Giant hunting grounds
>Safe route (Requires forced march)

Burrow fiends seem like a bitch and Wyverns can fly. Giants however are stuck on the ground, might be slow (optimist) and can be engaged by many people if we have to.

You're no expert on monsters, but you know enough to know what a wyvern is. Flight and hard scales are a dangerous mix, probably best to stay away from there. Burrow fiends you've never heard of before though, are they monsters or demons? Either way, they sound dangerous, probably best to avoid them. That leaves the giant hunting grounds. The only thing you know about giants is that they used to be a lot more common in Belmore hundreds of years ago, and that they're very big and very strong. You've heard they're also very slow though, and if it's their hunting grounds there's no guarantee you'll even run into one. With that in mind, you decide to travel through the hunting grounds.

-----
The swamp's water is very shallow, coming just barely up to your ankles. Still, the water is chilly and the mud is thick, making it difficult to march through. You're glad you bought furs before coming to the Grey Watchtower, because the air in this swamp is absolutely freezing. The cloudy overcast doesn't exactly help either.

"Man, this sucks." Erika complains, as she slogs her way through the mud in her platemail armor. She's not the only one, you can here grumbling coming from a lot of people here, particularly the ones wearing heavy armor.

"What exactly were you expecting, a nice stone road with a sign saying 'Beacons this way'?"

"Maybe not, but still, this fucking mud is a real pain in the ass." She says, pulling her foot out of the mud with a gross 'Schlock!'

"Please bear with it, miss Erika." Ganelon says. "We have a very long road ahead of us, complaining will only make it worse."

"Honestly, it's not so bad." Geoffrey says with a shrug. Unlike the others, he seems to be moving just fine, only slightly hampered by the mud.

"I agree. A little mud should not be cause for complaint." Celia adds.

"A 'little' mud? You call THIS a littl-"

"Quiet!" Justine hisses, cutting Erika off. Everyone quiets down, and now you start to hear it as well. Loud thuds, far off in the distance ahead of you. You see the swamp water begin to ripple with each thud, making you think something very big is coming.

"Giant." Justine whispers. "At least one of them, possibly more."

You swear. "Dammit, right in our way too. Do you think we can beat it?"

"With this many people? It's possible, although someone's bound to get hurt. That's assuming it's only one or two, if there's more I'd advise against trying to fight."

You quickly pull out your map and look for possible detours. There's one you could take to go around the giants, but you'd have to pass through an area marked "Arachnid nest". Arachnid...you're reminded of those horrible spider-like monsters you saw in Galadriel's memory, odds are that's what the map is referring to.

Giants, or arachnids. You'll have to make a decision quickly, because it sounds like the footsteps are starting to get closer.

"The only other route we can go would take us through an arachnid nest. We'll take our chances with the giants, at least giants don't have venom. I hope."

"They don't." Justine clarifies. "If we're going to fight the giants though, it's best we hide for now and see how many there are first."

There is a thicket of trees nearby, that should keep you hidden at least long enough to see how many there are.

"Everyone, into the thicket and stay quiet." You command, and everyone starts moving into the thicket, hunkering down behind trees or ducking into the bushes.

The loud thuds grow progressively louder and louder, until a large figure finally comes into view. It's looks similar to a normal human in many aspects, except it's tall enough to stand above the trees. The giant is covered in hair and clothed only in a loincloth fashioned from the skin of some massive beast. In it's hands it hold a single large bone, big enough to destroy a house with a single swing. As it draws closer, your nose is assaulted by an absolutely horrid odor, like someone had left a pig carcass out in the sun for a day then slathered it in cow manure.

A short moment later, the lone giant is joined by a second giant, this one carrying what appears to be an uprooted tree as a weapon. By your guess, both are just ten or so feet shorter than the Behemoth you fought back in Alastor's domain, and are currently standing about 100 feet away from your hiding place. Neither of the giants appear to have noticed you, at least not yet.

The one carrying a bone sniffs the air and grunts.

"I'm going to try and keep them distracted. Meanwhile, Justine, you get everyone into position to hamstring them. Got it?"

Justine nods. You reach for Galadriel and shift her into an axe. A warm glow flows from Galadriel and up your arm, materializing in six golden wings on your back. You feel your grip on your axe grow tighter, as Galadriel begins sharing her strength with you as well.

The second giant begins sniffing the air as well now. Before long, it seems one of them notices your presence and releases a guttural growl, hefting the tree in it's hands.

"GO!" You shout, soaring into the air and reciting the incantation for Haste as you go. The giant has his makeshift club lifted over his head when you reach him, slashing viciously at his face with your axe. Your ferocious assault, forces the giant to step back in pain, grasping at it's bleeding face while swinging it's tree at the air randomly. You evade it's blind swings, and shift Galadriel into bow, then begin showering it and it's companion in a hail of arrows, forcing them to shield their faces with their free hands.

Down below, everyone splits into two groups, one led by Justine and the other by Nerillian. They begin moving into position by the giants' feet while they're distracted by your assault.

You still need to buy the others a little more time, so you mutter an incantation for Duplicate and begin throwing acid bolts at the giants, aiming for the hands they're using to cover their faces.

The acid burns their skin, causing them to move their hands away out of reflex for just a moment. Fortunately, that moment is all you need to line up two shots aimed at each of their eyes.

You pull back Galadriel's drawstring, and let fly two arrows, one aimed at the first giant's left eye, and the other aimed at the second giant's right eye. Both find their mark, causing the giants to shout in pain and grasp at their eyes.

Down below, the others begin hacking away at the tendons of the giants' feet. Eventually, they manage to cut through their thick hides and sever the tendons on their feet, causing the giants to fall backwards. Everyone runs to get out of the way as the giants plummet to the ground, crushing the trees beneath them and landing with a sickening thud.

The others start climbing on top of the giants and begin hacking away at their tough hides. One of the giants feebly reaches for something held on the belt of his loincloth, a massive signal horn. It looks like he's trying to call in assistance.

You need to stop him, who knows how many of the swamp's residents will hear that horn? Drawing on the increased aether reserves you've received from Galadriel, you charge up a more potent acid bolt and throw at his hand.

The bolt finds it's mark, and the acid begins burning through the giant's skin. It roars in pain and drops the horn by accident. He starts reaching for it again, but you're too quick. While your duplicate heads for the giant's face, you fly towards the giant's neck, intending to finish it off.

The giant lifts it's head when it sees your duplicate flying towards it, and angrily swats at the duplicate with it's tree. The duplicate is shattered as soon as the tree makes contact with it, and before the giant even has time to realize what's happened, you shift Galadriel back into a sword and soar towards it's exposed neck, cutting clean through. The giant's head falls back to earth right behind you, the life leaving it's remaining eye.

Meanwhile, the other group finishes of the second giant. Celia and Geoffrey both charge towards it's exposed neck from opposite ends, stabbing into it's thick hide and meeting halfway, slitting the large artery in it's throat and killing it as well.

With both the giants now dead, you regroup with everyone and check to make sure everyone is fine. Surprisingly, no one appears to have suffered any severe injuries.

"Good job everyone. Now, let's get going before-"

Behind you, a shrill screech echoes through the swamp. It's very distant, coming from back the way you came.
>>
>>42182324
"...What was that?" You ask, hoping Justine or Nerillian will know.

"I have no idea." Nerillian says, already knocking another arrow. "Justine?"

"I don't know either. It sounds like it was very far away though, odds are whatever it is heard the commotion from our fight and is on it's way to investigate."

On it's way to investigate? Well then you really don't want to be here when it arrives. The sound came from back the way you came, you could probably just move on at a quickened pace and avoid it entirely. Of course, you don't know what's coming or if it intends to follow you, it may be a good idea to just wait and deal with it now rather than possibly deal with it later.

The sound of thunder draws your attention to the black clouds slowly drifting in, darkening the already overcast sky even more. Looks like a storm's coming, a really big one at that. You still have a ways to go until you reach the hideout the scouts left behind, sticking around to fight whatever that was in the distance may just slow you down, and you'd prefer not to be caught outside when the storm arrives.

You lead the way towards the hideout, the rest of the group following close behind. You move as quickly as you can through the mud, hopefully leaving whatever that was far behind you.

-----
It's already night by the time you arrive at the scout hideout, a cave kept hidden by a large boulder rolled in front of the entrance. While air was freezing during the day, it's absolutely dreadful at night, especially with strong winds blowing in thanks to the storm. Quickly, you roll the boulder out of the way and usher everyone inside. The inside of the cave is somewhat warmer by virtue of being shielded from the freezing wind, but the swamp's icy chill can still be felt even in here.

You have the others examine the hideout and see what supplies the scouts left behind. There are some basic medical supplies, some spare weapons, and some spare rations (which you don't need), but not much else. Thankfully, the cave is large enough to accommodate all 70 of you, making you think this place was dug out with the intention of housing large scout parties rather than a handful of scouts.

"S-s-sweet Aureus, it's freezing." Roland says through chattering teeth. He's not the only one, it seems everyone save Ganelon and the others from his order are shivering from the cold.

"No k-kidding." Erika agrees, huddling up for warmth. It seems the people from Iseria are handling the cold the worst, being that Iseria was almost always warm. In southern Iseria, where you and Reinhardt lived, it wouldn't even snow in the winter. Speaking of which, you wonder how Reinhardt hasn't cracked his teeth chattering them as hard as he is. Oh wait, that's not him, that's you.

"Should we build a fire?" Berry asks on Joan's behalf. It's hard to hear the little raven talk, as he's currently hiding underneath Joan's hat for warmth.

"Fire makes smoke. There's no telling if something might notice the smoke and come to i-investigate." Justine says, trying hard not to stutter. Seems the cold is getting to her as well.

"We'll risk it. Ganelon, g-grab a few others and see if you can collect some firewood."

"I shall return swiftly." Ganelon responds, grabbing ten others and heading outside the cave to collect firewood.

"Th-thank the Void." Reinhard says. "It's too f-f-fuckin' cold here."

"Yeah. We'll need to set up a watch though if w-we're gonna start a fire. I want at least ten people keeping watch at a t-time, we can't risk being ambushed out here."

The others nod, and everyone is divided into shifts. One group will keep watch while the others sleep, then swap with the next group after a while, and so on.

A while passes, and still the others haven't returned. You're about to gather a search party to look for them, when Ganelon finally comes back into the cave, carrying firewood.

"There you are, I was starting to wonder where you were." You tell him, sighing with relief.

"Apologies, Siegfried. Tell me, did anyone come back here while we were gone?"

You raise an eyebrow. "No, why?"

Ganelon swears. "One of the people from our group was separated from the rest of us. We couldn't find him, so I was hoping he came back here."

Now that you check, you notice there are only nine of them here.

"Dammit! Come on, let's put together a search party and look for-"

You are interrupted by a loud, pained scream coming from somewhere outside. Immediately, everyone jumps to their feet and draws their weapons. Sounds like the missing escort is being attacked.

"Justine, Nerillian, Celia, Geoffrey, you guys come with me. The rest of stay here and guard the hideout."

The four of them grab their weapons and follow after you, into the cold night outside. Thunder claps overhead, it looks like it's going to start pouring any minute now.

"Somebody...Heeeeelp!" You hear someone cry out. Sounds like he's wounded.

"Sounded like it came from that way." Nerillian says, taking the lead. You follow after him, making sure everyone stays close together so no one else goes missing. Eventually, you find the missing crusader lying on the ground, covered in blood. There's no sign of his attacker anywhere.

"Don't move." You tell the wounded crusader, extending a hand towards him and muttering the incantation for Heal. Strangely, the spell doesn't seem to have any significant effect. You know you cast the spell correctly, something must be up.

"My spell's not doing anything. Geoffrey, help me carry him."

Geoffrey obliges, helping you lift the now unconscious crusader off the ground as gently as he can and carrying him back to the cave. Nerillian, Justine, and Celia keep a watchful eye out for whatever attacked him, but nothing comes to attack you.

Inside the cave, you call out for Daniel and carry the wounded crusader back to the makeshift medical room in the back of the cave.

"Johan? Johan?!" One of the other crusaders calls, rushing over to check on the wounded crusader. It looks like they're friends. "Aureus in the Void, what happened?!"

"No idea, we found him lying in the swamp like this." You tell him. "I tried healing him, but for some reason the spell didn't work. Daniel, do you think you can help him?"

"I do not know, but I will try at least." He says, as you set the wounded crusader, Johan, down on the table in the makeshift medical room.

I was actually referring to the boost you guys got back in Galloway. Maybe I didn't draw enough attention to it, but I did mention that your spellcating got a boost as well as your strength.

I'm gonna go ahead and mark the strength and spellcasting boost down on the character sheet, so there's no more confusion. Sorry about that anon.

Ask Levi to see if she knows what's up with him.

Considering it's one of Ganelon's men, I'm sure they would have known if something was afoot, so I doubt it's a demon or something.

'Leviathan, do you have any idea what could have done this?'

'None whatsoever.' She replies. 'See if your friend with the helmet can feel anything though, it could have been one of Eligos' demons for all I know.'

"Ganelon, can you sense anything strange nearby?" You ask, taking Leviathan's advice

Ganelon shakes his head. "No, I'm afraid not. Whatever attacked this young man either wasn't a demon, or has already fled far away from here."

You sigh. "Alright then, no way we'll be able to find whatever attacked him at this time of night, especially with a storm coming in. Let's go ahead and start a fire, but I want a strict watch kept on the entrance. Nobody goes outside without seeing me first, and if anyone sees something I want to know as soon as possible."

-------
Time has passed, and a fire has been inside the cave's main "room". The sound of thunder and pouring rain can be heard outside, but thankfully everyone is inside and staying warm by the fire, save the group that's currently on watch, which is sitting at the mouth of the cave keeping a close watch for anything suspicious.

While you're warming yourself by the fire, Daniel finally comes back from the medical room, his robes stained red by blood.

"So how's he doing?" You ask.

"Better than before, at least. I couldn't heal him with magic, so I had to make use of the medical supplies the scouts left here to patch him up."
>>
>>42185184
Noice.
>>
>>42185191
"You couldn't heal him either?" Justine asks.

"No, I'm afraid not. It seems that whatever attacked him placed some sort of curse on him, none of my healing spells had any effect on him whatso-"

"Hold on." Justine says, standing to her feet. "You said he was cursed?"

"Yes, it seems so. Regrettably, I do not have the materials I'd need to break such a curse, so I had to do things the old fashioned way."

"Is there anyone in there with him right now?" Justine asks, a sense of urgency starting to show on her face.

"Just the boy's friend. Is something wrong?"

Justine swears. "Dammit! Come on, we need to-"

"AAAAAAHHHHHH!" Someone screams. It sounded like the crusader who came to check on Johan when you brought him in.

"Shit!" Justince shouts, grabbing her spear and running towards the medical room. You grab Galadriel and follow close behind her, wondering what in the Void just happened.

Upon turning the corner into the medical room, you are greeted by the sight of Johan, mouth covered in blood and standing over the limp body of his friend. He looks different now though, his eyes are coal black and his teeth look sharp like fangs. He licks his teeth and stares at you both, barring his teeth and snarling like a beast.

Next to you, Justine pulls out the clove of garlic you gave her and everyone else in the group and holds it out towards Johan, or at least, what used to be Johan. Johan hisses in displeasure at the sight of it, and backs up just a little.

Justine moves forward with the clove of garlic in one hand and her spear in the other. Meanwhile, you mutter an incantation for Duplicate and move forward, holding a hand out and beginning the incantation for Flash.

As soon as you and Justine separate, the monster that's replaced Johan charges at you with blinding speed. It sinks it's teeth into your duplicate's neck, shattering the illusion while you finish your incantation.

From your hand comes a blinding flash of light, causing Johan to squeal and recoil. It actually sounded like the flash hurt him. While he's stunned, you slash at the monster's neck, intending to decapitate him and end the fight quickly, but he suddenly jerks his head back and your sword only cuts into his throat.

Curiously, there is no blood when you cut him. Johan grasps at his throat, but somehow he is still alive, despite the fact you're certain you should have severed a major artery.. He dashes away from you towards the cave wall, somehow climbing up the wall and onto the roof, like a spider, where he hisses at you and Justine.

"Keep using that spell!" Justine advises. "Light won't kill him unless it's sunlight, but it'll weaken him"

>Plan of attack?

It's a tough life to be a duplicate
>>
>>42186028
Poor guy. Doesn't even know what he's getting into...
>>
>>42186028
Now i have an idea about duplicate shenanigans in our downtime.

When someone talks cast duplicate behind them and have it imitate them and start dancing silly behind them.

For maximum exfect do it to someone who's usually very stuck up or too serious.
>>
>>42185654
You begin reciting the incantation for Duplicate again. As you do, Johan hisses and reaches an arm out towards you. A moment later, you see what appears to have been Johan's sword flying towards you out of the corner of your eye. You manage to dodge it just in time, thankfully, and finish your incantation. It seems this thing can use some sort of telekinesis.

With another duplicate up, you hold out your hand and cast Flash again, blinding Johan and causing him to cover both of his eyes and recoil in pain. While he's stunned, you shift Galadriel into a bow and begin peppering Johan with arrows. He's not a demon, so the arrows don't burn him, but they're arrows nonetheless and they do their job admirably. Now riddled with arrows, it seem Johan is starting to get sluggish.

Not giving him a chance to rest, you then shift Galadriel into a spear and blink up to him, driving your spear into his heart. Johan gasps as you pull the spear back out, and collapses back onto the floor.

"Is it dead?" You ask Justine.

Johan hisses pathetically and looks up at the body of his friend, a pool of blood forming within a few feet of him. He tries to drag himself over to the blood, but Justine stomps on his back to stop him in his tracks and drives her spear into the back of his skull, causing him to go completely limp.

"He is now."
>>
>>42186355
You shift Galadriel back into her sword form and sheath her for now. "Just what the Void happened to him?"

"Looks like he was attacked by a vampire while he was out, probably a Nosferatu. Their bite is cursed, it prevents healing magic from working and slowly drains the life out of the victim until they eventually die. Speaking of which, check his friend. Can you heal him?"

You crouch down next to Johan's former friend and try to cast Heal. No result, but he still has a pulse.

"No, looks like he's been cursed too."

"Damn. In that case, stand back." She says, grabbing Johan's sword and approaching his fallen friend.

"What are you-"

Before you can finish your sentence, she severs his head from his body, sending it rolling across the medical room.

"There. Now he won't come back."

>"What the Void Justine, he was still alive!"
>"Sweet Aureus Justine, I get that he was going to change like Johan did, but not even a little hesitation? That's pretty cold."
>"Why did you do that, we could have gotten Daniel to save him!"

"Sweet Aureus Justine, I get that he was going to change like Johan did, but not even a little hesitation? That's pretty cold."

"Hesitation gets people killed, Siegfried. Daniel can't break curses out here, it was only a matter of time before he died. Better to put him out of his misery here than let some filthy monster's soul take over his body and hurt the people he cares about."

"...Have you been through this before, Justine?"

"A few times. It doesn't matter right now though, what do we do with the bodies?"

"We can't carry them with us, but I'd like to cremate them in the morning at least. Are you alright Justine?"

"I'm fine. Tell the others to stay inside until morning, I'm going to bed."

You start to say something else, but Justine's already left before you can get a word out.

'Seems like you've hit a sore spot.' Leviathan comments.

You sigh. This has been an awful day, and there's still more to go. Tomorrow morning you'll make sure these two get the proper rites at least, Daniel should be able to help you with that. For now, you need some sleep. Your journeys not even halfway done yet, the real trouble starts tomorrow, when you get to the beacons.

Poison enchantments do exist, but they're not very common, partly because they're somewhat frowned upon by the law (but not strictly forbidden), and partly because you have to be veeerrry careful not to touch the blade on accident.

Well we are almost always wearing gloves.

We could also get a sheath and enchant it with poison resistance.

Having a good backup weapon is quite necessary if we are continuing the situation with Asher dying because he charged in without a weapon when Galardriel was stuck in Alastor.

Siegfried is in a lot of trouble and can't afford him self to start romancing someone right now so he's keeping a lid on it.

At the end of the quest we will get our token waifuu but until then we're just buddies with everyone.

Horned chick. Basically MC dumped her and then fucked another girl week later, broadcasted it mentally to entire party by accident. Shitposting occured en-masse. Asshurt accelerated entire galaxies to spin out of control. Then they tried to fuck another girl, turned out she has mental trauma due to rape gangbangs. All of this while part of the players want to fuck some other girl.
What a clusterfuck. There was also a poll, apparently 33~% of people come to threads just to shitpost.

Yeah, considering we're a frontline soldier in a role with a VERY low survival rate, I'd be hesitant to pursue a romantic relationship if only because it would IC seem like a surefire precursor to tragedy. Every single champion got cut down before their time, and every one who had a lover or wife at home left them heartbroken and alone. And let's not even get started with Andras' case...

But no one was discussing waifus.
Only stating that they don't want to discuss waifus and hope it never comes to that.
Besides it is all done after the run is finished, I see no harm in doing it now. And the consensus seems that it'll happen, but after the quest, assuming we get a good ending.
Well, I suppose discussing it at all just invites more discussion related to the topic so you have a point there.
>>
>>42189174
And no one's really discussing this shit seriously, anon. Galadriel's the fan favourite because it's fun to talk about waifuing her when no one's really a shipperfag. We've gone 40+ threads and nothing has happened, and right now I don't think anyone really cares because no ones serious.

Except for the PG thing, because no one should bring that garbage up.

I'm up to thread 3 or 4. Has he updated the combat system?

Best of 3 on 1d100 means you get a high chance of success, but also a very high chance of crit fails and crit successes. Like an averaged roll of 71, and around an 11% chance of a crit fail or crit success if my math is right.

Both technically

Don't have a link but its pretty simple.

We come up with a plan of attack and then roll a 3d10 for each major action in that plan.

>Cast Flash then blink behind the enemy, sweep the legs, and go for the coup de grace

would translate to

>Flash
>Blink
>Sweep
>Coup de Grace

4 rolls of 3d10

If a part of the chain succeeds by a large margin it can lower the DC of the lower parts of the chain.
