You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You watch as Rock and Alex position their VT, armed with a fresh lance, opposite of Hess' black VT. It looked to be a similar to the type Gregor was using. However, it looked to be thinner and sleeker than his.

You wonder if you could glean anything useful from observing it.

You narrow your eyes as you observe Hess' VT. You could tell a lot just by looking at one in motion, and that's what you intended to do here. As the typical pre-combat ritual, both VTs begin revving their engines in a form of intimidation. The Wolverine, true to its name, lets out a heavy roar, thick lack smoke belching from the exhausts. Hess' VT answers the call with a roar of its own. However, you notice it's a much higher tone, and not quite as loud. It was also venting clear exhaust rather than the typical black smoke of other VT engines.

"A new type of engine?" Tarin frowns.

"Definitely not diesel." You shake your head. "It might be gas turbine."

"Gas turbine?" Tarin frowns. "I thought those were grossly fuel inefficient."

"They are." You confirm, watching as Hess' VT digs its feet into the dirt, preparing to charge. "But they can give a serious performance boost and can take practically any kind of fuel. Either they figured out how to deal with the inefficiency, or Hess plain doesn't care."

"Hard to tell with a girl like her." Tarin shakes her head.

Finally, the squire waves the start flag and sprints back to the relative safety of the stands as both VTs charge. In the blink of an eyes, Hess' VT PROPELS itself forward like a bullet. You gasp as you've never seen a VT accelerate so fast.

Rock and Alex are barely at the halfway point when Hess' lance slams into their side and splinters into a shower of shards. It's perfectly timed so that the opposite foot was still on the ground, so the contact actually forces Rock and Alex's VT to spin, with its own leg serving as the pivot.

Their lance doesn't even touch Hess, and she's already at the other end of field, her VT sliding to a halt dangerously close to the perimeter wall.

Meanwhile, Rock and Alex's VT continues to spin around, its balance critically compromised as it teeters dangerously from side to side. However, Rock is just barely able to slam the opposite foot down at the right moment, stabilizing its fall.

The crowd then cheers. Whether it was for Hess' masterful play, or Rock and Alex's last minute save, you weren't too sure. You could even see Hess stand up from her hatch and give a respectful clap.

"That doesn't look good." Tarin frowns.

How much of an advantage do you think a VT would get if they had an "Alt-Mode" such as putting wheels or tracks in the back of the legs for high speed movement?

Sorta like a Loto.

"Yeah, I think Hess is in a completely different league." You admit. It's then that you notice that your hands are shaking. You've never seen a VT move like that! By comparison, your Wolverines were just rocks with legs.

"Are there any weaknesses that you saw?" Tarin asks. "That VT is fast, but I don't think it's solely because of that engine. She had to have sacrificed some armor reduce weight."

"Yeah, that would make her easier to knock around." You nod. "That's probably also why she went for such a highly technical hit. Besides her need to be theatrical, her VT would be at a disadvantage in a head on slug fest.

You hear the swish of a flag as the next round begins. You watch intently as both VTs go at it again. Again, Hess' VT is lighting fast, barreling down the line like a cheetah. You notice Rock being a little slow to start this time. Probably being cautious after that play Hess pulled.

"No no, that's not a good idea." You mumble.

"What's wrong?" Tarin blinks.

"The question of force." You note. "You remember what we were taught in school, right? Force equals mass times acceleration? Hess doesn't NEED mass-"

And then you're interrupted by a loud CLANG and cheer. Hess' lance strikes Rock and Alex's VT head on. The lance deforms briefly before snapping in two, but it's already transferred all of its force. Rock and Alex, who haven't build up enough forward momentum to counter Hess', are knocked backward and their VT literally falls flat on its ass. The crowd's cheers gain in volume as flowers and wreaths are thrown into the ring to celebrate the total knockout. Hess is all to happy to turn out and bask in the attention.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we will have a short intermission before we start the final joust between the representatives of Tilea and Reikland." A voice blares from the intercom.

"That gives us roughly an hour before the next joust." Willem says as he walks up. "That would give you a chance to see more of fair, or practice more. It's up to you, really."

"You're right, but that doesn't mean we should get complacent." You say.

"Aw, shit." Rock groans he walks up, massaging his neck as we walks. "That little girl really knows how to move a VT!"

"You were being too nice on her." Alex grunts as she holds an icepack against her head. "You should have picked up speed like I said before."

"She'd have just used our momentum against us by trying to spin us out again." Rock sighs.

"Hey, if you two are going to keep arguing, you better do it in the first aid tent!" Bannon barks as she and Parker return from wherever they went.

"Yes sir." Both Rock and Alex grumble and march off.

"I take it things didn't go well." Parker notes as she stakes a bit from the roasted corn cob she had apparently bought.

"Hess knocked them out in two strikes." You explain. "They didn't put a dent in her."

"Oh, well that's concerning." Parker frowns. "Me and Bannon were checking out their VTs while they were on display. These tanks... I daresay that they more advanced than our own Wolverines. This is a very troubling revelation."

"Well, either way, we still gotta win this. We can't have Reikland getting a new ally." Bannon growls and turns to you. "Kid, you think you can handle this?"

"We'll try." You gulp. "We were about to get some last minute practice in. Willem?"

"I can get my crew together for a few sparring matches." Willem nods. "But Do you want us to go at full strength? I recognize the need for more practice, but there's always the risk your VT can get damaged, and with the short timeframe, I doubt repairs could be effected in time..."

For the next hour or so, you drill repeatedly against Willem, clashing repeatedly with your lances. Willem to his credit, tries to match Hess' fighting style as best he can by disabling the safety governors on his VT's engine, pumping out a bit of extra speed at the cost of slowly burning it out. After a few runs, you figure out that the best methods of fighting a high speed opponent. Really, you had to play defensively by actively angling your own VT to make sure Hess' hits glance off. Sure ,her hits would have a lot of force initially due to her speed, but without any mass, she couldn't really carry through with the hit. Sure, it would be a lot harder for you to get your own hit in, but you'd be relatively safe. On the other hand, you could also try to brute force your way through, and hope the Wolverine's greater mass could go in your favor.

However, from your impression of the people here, they enjoyed a quick decisive strike. Basically, high risk and high reward plays that Hess loved to do. You remember words that Lord Artois had mentioned to you all before, that it was imperative to "win the crowd".

Then again, you certainly wouldn't be winning the crowd if Clementine got flipped over.

"All right I think that's all we have time for." Willem turns out of his hatch, wiping sweat off his brow. "I hope this was helpful for you."

"It was, thanks." You sigh just as horns begin to blare to signal the end of the intermission.

"You don't sound all that confident." Tarin says as you observe Hess's VT sauntering back into the field, still being showered with flowers and praise.

After all, like Hess, you and Tarin basically knocked Gregor out of the running in one strike. Up above in a special box seat sits the King, who has come to personally spectate the match. However, unlike the previous matches, he stands up and is handed a microphone.

"My subjects." He starts, coughing to clear his throat a bit. "We gather here today to determine the direction our great nation shall go! On one side is Tilea."

He gestures to you and Clementine, triggering applause.

"And on the other, our ancient brothers of Reikland."

Again, equally loud applause. Looked like the crowd's opinion was split.

"Tilea, are you ready?" The King asks.

You nod to Tarin, and she responds with a loud rev of the engine.

"And Reikland?"

Hess' VT responds in kind.

"Then LET THE JOUST BEGIN."

And with that, as expected, Hess' VT shoots forward like lightning, her lance tip glinting in the sun.

"Tarin, full speed!" You yell. "As far as you can push the engine without damaging it!"

"Roger." Tarin nods as she pushes the throttle forward. Clementine rocks up and down as she picks up her stride, trying her best to match Hess' closing speed. As expected, Hess goes all in, aiming her lance directly at your VT, banking on her superior speed to get the first hit in. Meanwhile, you do your best to get your own lance on target.

We hit the legs last time, she'll be expecting it. Nail the body, splinter the lance, get the point!

Then, next round, we can hit the legs.

You rotate your body to aim the lance towards the legs of Hess' VT. However, you don't fully aim just yet, or you'd risk giving away your plans. It's nerve wracking. Not only did you have aim for a fast, small target, but you also had to time your final correction just right so Hess wouldn't have time to dodge or adjust.

As you close the distance, the world slows down as the adrenaline starts to surge through your system. Even with all her speed, Hess slows to a crawl, her VT looking like it was trying to wade its way through honey rather than sprinting across the savannah like a predatory cat. You wait for what feels to be an eternity before jerking your control stick, swinging your lancein line with the knee joint of Hess' VT.

And it connects.

In fact, it does more than connect. For a split second, you can see the lance punch THROUGH steel as both the wooden lance and the steel leg join shatter like glass, sending wood shards, shrapnel, and hydraulic fluid flying everywhere.

Without its leg for support, Hess' VT goes down and goes down HARD, smashing into the dirt with a loud CRUNCH. You can see the hull and the armor plates warp and crack from the impact. However, it doesn't end there. Thanks to Hess' speed, her wrecked VT still has a surplus of momentum, and her VT continues to roll on the ground, the second leg snapping off from the force and the main hull receiving a punishing battering as it clatters along the dirt like a discarded toy.

Nobody even waits. The stadium rumbles with cheers and applause as confetti and flowers being to rain down.

"Did...did that just happen?" Tarin blinks.

"I don't know, let me check." You finally exhale as you turn out of your hatch to get a better look. And indeed, you could see Hess' now legelss VT laying on its side, the interior leaking smoke.

And all around you, the crowd begins to chant your name.

You don't even think about all of the the fame. You immediately climb out of the hatch and drop down to the ground.

"Roy?" Tarin blinks in surprise.

"Come on, we need to help!" You say as you continue to run towards to Hess' wrecked VT. The fact nobody was climbing out of it was a bit distressing. You hear Tarin drop down behind you and she quickly catches up to you. By the time reach the wreck, you can see the drivers' hatch pop open, with the driver clambering out but barely even managing that. Tarin picks him up by the armpits and drags him away to a safe distance where the medics could take care of him. Meanwhile you pry the commander's hatch open. Inside, you see Hess, still strapped into her seat and unconscious. Thick black smoke flows from damaged electronics, and you carefully unclip Hess from her chair and gingerly carry her out.

You notice the cheering and chanting transitioning into hand clapping. Apparently, your rescue of Hess seemed to impress the crowd even further.

"Like a true knight!" You hear the King laugh in appreciation.

"Unnnnngh." You hear Hess grown as her eye twitches before opening. "Ah!? W-w-w-what happened? Why are you carrying me!?"

Anon, anon, anon. Don't say "eugenics". That's a Reikzi word. Liberty-loving Tileans simply know that Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. Even though Captain Roy Powers might be favored by the Dice now, the next generation of Tileans will surely have to fight for their freedom as well. Ensuring that his VT-loving genes are passed on, so that Tilea will not look to an old man for defense but to many bright young faces who have inherited his love for the Vertical Tank, is only the natural and heroic thing to do.

"O-oh!" Hess' cheeks go red. Whether it was because of humiliation of losing or being carried by you, you're not too sure. "V-vell, I think I can valk on my own again!"

Meanwhile, you see Tarin, after having handed off her charge to the medics, returning. You also see another team of medics coming to deal with Hess. Farther back, you can see a very angry Gregor marching in.

>"Captain Roy Powers, you stand before this court martial accused of devastating a custom, prototype Reikland Vertical Tank, then engaging in wonton and gratuitous lewdness with your VT pilot and the commander of the Reikland vertical tank while a large crowd of feudal peasants and nobility cheered. This caused your social status to skyrocket, leading to an assured alliance, and also resulted in the leader of the Reikland diplomatic detachment suffering a disabling brain aneurysm."

>"Yes, sir."

>"You realize that the Reiklanders have accused you of war crimes, and want your head for crimes against the state?"

>"Yes, sir. What is this court martial's ruling, sir?"

>"...carry on, Captain Powers."

"Here, Tarin, take Hess to the medics." You say, carefully handing Hess off to your driver.

"Me?" Tarin blinks.

"Her?" Hess blinks.

"Somebody's going to have to hold up Gregor." You say. "Besides, it's a chance for you two to know each other a little better, right?"

Tarin and Hess both regard each other suspiciously before sighing.

"All right, if you say so." Tarin concedes.

"Vell, carrying me should ve an honor for a commoner girl like you!" Hess puffs with pride.

"Commoner, huh...?" Tarin shows a slightly murderous glare as she leads Hess away.

However, you don't have time for second thoughts as Gregor is already making a beeline straight for Tarin and Hess. You move in to intercept, sliding in between him and his quarry.

"What do you want, boy?" Gregor's eyes narrow as he peers down at you. Up close, he was actually frighteningly tall.

>I just came to say you and your team fought admirably.
>I want you to go back and tell your bosses not to mess with Tilea.
>U mad, bro?

>>I just came to say you and your team fought admirably.

The king and the nobility are looking on. So is everyone else. Now is not the time to incite a fight, or have Gregor challenge us to some kind of honor-duel. We're the honorable young knight congratulating a worthy opponent.

We look GOOOOOD for the crowds. Remember, Tilea needs this alliance to happen!

>I just wanted to let you know that Hess fought well. You fought like a drunken lemur. If I ever see you again, I'm going to freeze your dick, snap it off, stab you through the eye into the brain with it, mount the head - with dick - on my VT, and take it on a victory parade through Downtown Shitville where Reikland's seat of government is at, so they see your thumb of a penis flopping around out of your eye.

>....and you know what? I'm going to make sure your mother's gonna see it.

We need to not have Gregor wreck our jaw or our jewels. After all, we haven't "wrecked" Hess yet. That comes later, after a stein of bier and a group hug that includes Tarin. Then we wreck Hess so hard she'll think getting the top knocked off her tank was a gentle spring breeze.

And then we tag in Tarin.

Well, you kind of wanted to rub his defeat in his face, tell him how he'd just been beaten by a nation of "farmers and bums", as Reiklanders tended to call Tileans. However, your professionalism wins out. Instead, you hold out your hand.

"I just came to say you and your team fought admirably." You say with earnestness.

Gregor gives you a dark look. However, under the piercing gaze of thousands of spectators and Breton royalty, he has little choice but to play along and shakes your hand.

"Do not think that you have won just by winning a silly little tournament." Gregor growls. "Your armies are nothing in the face of our might."

"Fat good that's done you so far." You smirk. "You guys lost fair and square."

"Indeed. For now." Gregor straightens out his hat and spins around, his cloak fluttering in the wind. "We shall meet again, Roy Powers. I guarantee it."

Well, there you went, making friends as always. You turn your attention back to the medic tent, where you see Hess and Tarin glaring daggers at each other.

You wonder what they could possibly be arguing over.

>And that's it for tonight! That was a pretty sick crit guys!
>Anyways, next thread is next week as awlays. Don't forget Ace Combat on Friday!

Thanks for running, Merc! This episode was awesome. Meaningful choices all around (the scenario helped a lot with that), plenty of call for dicerolls (and what dicerolls we got!), but best of all your writing was spot-on. I really enjoyed the detail you put into the jousts, especially the results of the critical and little things like the Taring helping the driver out of the damaged VT. This was a rip-roaring little installment, and it was a real honor to be part of it.

Great fight, great writing, and interesting choices all around. Another quality MercCommand Quest Thread! Keep up the good work, and sleep well. I know I will...
