One of the first things you learned as a newly-minted Commander was that a sailor doing something innocuous in a nervous fashion is either green as hell, or up to something. Usually both, because the old salts are very, very good at getting away with whatever they're doing – which makes a man doing his job and looking happy about it even more suspicious. But you think Arizona falls firmly in the “greenhorn” category, here. Using your cane sparingly so the clacking of the metal-capped end doesn't give you away, you sidle up behind her in line just as the staff places the massive box of sugary goodness on the counter.

“That'll be forty-eight bucks, honey.”

Arizona seems to stagger for a second before shaking her head – inflation's a bitch, isn't it honey? She holds out the plastic credit card.

“Oh, just swipe it through there, honey.”

The card trembles a bit, and you imagine Arizona making a pleading face.

“Oh. Oh, you're-! Right, sorry, honey.” The kindly cashier takes the plastic and swipes it for her, operating the keypad herself. “Here's your receipt. Have a good day, honey!”

Arizona gathers the huge box in her arms, swings around and squeaks as she recoils against the counter. Or at least her boots do as they twist and slide against the tiled floor, so violent is her reaction.

“Hey, Arizona,” you say conversationally. “Gee. That's a lot of donuts.”

Arizona makes an abortive motion with her arms, as if she was going to fling the box away, but settles for a bright, slightly too-wide smile, and nods.

“Really hungry, huh?”

She shakes her head.

“For someone else, then.”

She nods.

You grin at her, leaning heavily on your cane as you leeeaaan in a little closer. “A lot of someone else's, eh?”

She nods enthusiastically, her eyes skittering around your edges as they seek the exit behind you. You keep a lidded-eyed look of suspicion on your face, but a smile's fighting its way onto your face. Such a stalwart, stoic, silent warship, but getting caught on a donut run for someone makes her fall right to pieces. “For Kongou, perhaps?”

She purses her lips and shakes her head, holding up her fingers, one, two, three, four, as if counting. Many people, not one person – her expression is slightly wounded, as if insulted you thought you could catch her in such a fashion.

As fun as this is, your curiosity is really getting the better of you – and if there's anyone on the whole base you trust unconditionally, it's Arizona. So you just ask. “Okay, I give up – who's it for? Why so nervous?”

She tilts her head a little too quickly – nervous, who me? - and holds out her hand low, patting an imaginary head. “For the destroyers?”

She smiles and nods.

“Whatever for?”

She describes a circle on the air around her with one hand, balancing the box on one arm, and then sweeps her palm overhead, like feeling out the interior of a bubble.

“AA protection!”

She grins and nods.

“Well, that'll do the trick,” you agree. “Nothing gets people on your side like...”

Arizona's expression has returned to her default stoneface, but her eyes are wider than dinner plates and positively skipping off the walls like a pinball.

“... like donuts,” you say, eyeballing the truly massive box, then sliding your gaze back to Arizona's face. The slender girl seems to be trembling ever so slightly now, fidgeting from foot to foot.

“Especially the intel guys,” you say, and Arizona nearly drops the damn box.

“A~ha~” you snicker, turning your face to one side to regard her with that suspicious sidelong look that tool in the glasses uses on CSI Gatorstan. “But what on earth could you want them to track down for you, hmm?”

Arizona clutches the box to her like a shield, tucking her chin against her chest to hide her eyes. She seems to shrink before you, jaw covered by her duster's collar. She sidles to the side, making clear her desire to just leave this room, right now.

I think she reasonably trusts people at this point; better to reinforce that "yes, she's a person, and people are allowed to keep secrets*".

*Well.. maybe not if you're military and your superior officer asked you a direct question, but the concept is still valid.

Arizona has been a sweetheart to us, and trying to force her to open up (especially when she can't talk) would only be prying and make her upset at us. But perhaps we can find a way to help her with whatever mission she has and deduce her intentions anyways!

Weird how she gets personal interactions so well despite being so 'new' a ship girl.

I wonder if memorial ships are the same as museum ships in that they picked up a lot more normal human interactions.

Perhaps. We have not yet tested if their ship-like characteristics translate to land.

Experience showed, however, that they are about as fast as should be expected for Bound personas of their age and sizes.

A reasonably fit man should be able to outrun Miss Arizona fairly handily, I wager.

You step aside, giving her a free shot at the door. “Sorry, hon. I was just teasing you. We've... all got things we can't talk about... no matter how much we should, or want to.” You give her a sad smile as she peeks up at you, chin still tucked against the box. “And god knows, there's some things from your day that are *still* classified today, even above my flag rank.” You shrug – then pause, then produce your wallet. Arizona almost leaps away when you reach out and slip your military ID card into the donut box as discreetly as possible.

“There. That might open some doors for whatever you're looking for,” you tell her. “You just got back, after all. Some ships have taken to the internet like a ship to, uh-” you shake your head, and she smiles her usual slight smile. “And some don't, like Hornet. So if you just need a nerd to browse the MILNET for you, that'll help. Just, make sure they don't look up Roswell or anything retarded when they're logged in with my ID, okay?”

Arizona smiles shyly down at her donut box. She turns and sets it back on the counter.

“Reconsidering the largesse?” you say with a laugh.

She spins around so quickly her duster's hem slaps your shins and pounces on you. For such a slender girl she's surprisingly strong, hugging you so tightly your back pops back into place. She disengages so fast you hardly realize it happened, flicking her duster's collar up before seizing her donuts and skittering out of the building.

“What was that all about?” the kindly cashier asks.

“I'd tell you,” you reply, “if I had the faintest frikkin clue myself.”

“Shouldn't you know?” she says dubiously, eyeballing the scrambled eggs on your cover.

“Woulda, coulda, shoulda,” you mutter. “Are you gonna weigh in on the damned LCS next?”

She giggles merrily at that one, taking your point without elaboration, and sells you some donuts.

The apple fritters and frosted cake donuts go quickly as you lay in bed back in your apartment, thumbing aimlessly through random webpages. Nobody's bothering to counter-shitpost on 2chan tonight; Hate's probably too angry to operate keyboards right now. Hell, if he came across an ape smashing bones about before a black stone obelisk he'd probably push the obelisk over on the ape. You got to know the Corporal – rather, the Lieutenant – pretty well during your shipboard service. Well enough that you quickly dispensed with his real name, preferring his infinitely more accurate nickname, and getting so chummy with the lowly “enlisted” man that it nearly drove your XO batty enough to care about it. Nearly – he didn't care about anything outside how well he could fight his ship. He was a good man – and the real hero of LA.

You can't remember his name.

Shutting down your phone, you drop it onto the carpet and roll your face into the pillow. Hate is the person closest to you, a bond welded tight in the crucible of San Pedro harbor, but you've never talked about it with him – not once. Maybe if he'd been aboard at the time... but he wasn't. You were separated, and fought your own battles in your own places. You've wondered at what exactly happened aboard the Iowa, and you're sure he's had his questions, too – but you've both been content to know that your educated guesses are close enough.

Maybe you're not ready to talk about it.

Maybe you never will.

You turn off the nightstand light, and finally fall asleep.

“... what the fuck am I looking at, Weiss?” Parker stared at the screens in front of him.

CTT2 Weiss leaned back in his chair, smiling as he described the various tracks and data points in front of Parker. “What you are looking at, Chief, is the finest in the tracking of Abyssals. An entire array of deep-submergence and surface sonar buoys tracking the movements of both deployed Abyssals, and their submerged versions.”

The screen in front of both Parker and Weiss displayed several predicted tracks from the buoys; the recorded wave sensors painted a clear picture of both the Abyssal ships on the surface in the Philippine Sea, as well as those targets that had been 'out of sight' during the engagement, hidden beneath the waves.

Parker looked nonplussed at Weiss. “Bullshit. This is from the movie 'Battleship'. Who's idea was this?”

Weiss raised his hands defensively, “But it works, Chief. And the best part is, after Fukushima, pretty much all the countries in the AOR pitched in and funded the installation of them around all the inhabited islands and coastlines.”

“Again, who's idea was this?”

Weiss coughed into his hands “...Alvarez.”

Parker turned his lidded glare in the direction of the lone Operations Specialist, who shrunk back involuntarily under the gaze, know informally as the 'Disappointed Father Figure (Navy ver.)'.

A CAC or common access card is the identification used by civilian and uniform members of the department of defense. It has a chip on it is necessary to access just about everything electronic within DOD like computers computers. It's also your identification under the Geneva Convention which designates user as a combatant or noncombatant. It's also loaded with all kinds of useful information, everything from rank to blood type. Combined with a personal identification number, it serves as part of a two factor authentication system for access to pretty much anything at DOD. It also has an encodable magnetic strip that can be used for physical access to facilities. Let's put it this way, if I had to choose to lose all of my clothing, or my CAC card, I'd lose the clothes! Every time.

“Seaman Alvarez, is this true?”

Alvarez blanched under the attention suddenly thrown his way. “Y-yes, Chief. I watched the movie a few nights ago...”

Parker rose from his chair and slowly approached the hapless seaman. He fixed his best pokerface and simply loomed over Alvarez, watching the kid sweat like he was in front of a disciplinary review board. Parker rapidly brought his right hand up to Alvarez's face in the universally-known knifehand, causing the seaman to flinch.

“Good job, Alvarez; we'll make a proper spook out of you yet.” Parker's knifehand clapped down lightly on the seaman's shoulder.

“Too bad only one in ten of those buoys have sonar, Chief,” interjected the other crypto tech, Thompson.

Parker turned to look at him, “Shit, really? How come so few?”

Thompson continued, “ Well, the buoys were set up as a tsunami early-warning system; there isn't much need for passive tracking of wave fronts. It was actually Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research that had as many set up for passive sonar as they did.”

Parker processed this. “Wait, shit, those whale hunters funded the sonar buoys?” Thompson nodded.

Parker walked back over to the computer running the data. He tapped on the keyboard and found the disappointment he was looking for. “Looks like I'm going to have to make a few phone calls and shit in someones coffee; all the sonar recordings are in the hands of the ICR.”

The three enlisted exchanged curious looks. “Why would we need the recordings, Chief?” asked Alvarez.

“Because we only know what was out there after the fact; the recordings would allow us to work on uploading the sound waves into a real-time setup and find out what's out there before we deploy anyone.”

The enlisted got rather dumb looks on their faces at this. “How?”

Just before Parker could answer however, there was a rapid, panicked knocking at the security door. He walked over and opened up the security shutter to see Admiral Goto's terrified face looking back.

“Admiral, how can I help you?” Parker calmly asked.

“Kongou's called for teatime. Hide me,” Goto demanded.

“What.”

“Open the goddamn door Parker, I ain't got time for this.”

Parker was about to torment the Admiral with the long, drown-out process of allowing Goto access into the SCIF when he heard it; the long, hauntingly melodious call of “~teatime, teitoku!~” come floating through the hallway. Parker saw Goto's face morph from 'demanding terror' to 'abject fear'. He quickly unbolted the security door and ushered the Admiral in, securing it firmly shut behind him.

As Goto huddled out of sight, and the rest of the enlisted in the room battened down for the impending Kongocalypse, Parker merely stood his ground at the security door. He could hear the rapid quickstep of someone borderline sprinting down the corridor stop in front of the SCIF. At the rapid staccato of someone knocking at the door, Parker took a deep breath and turned on the Angry Chief.

Kongou was greeted by the sheer presence of Parker that rolled out of the small window of the security shutter as he opened it. “For the last time, Warcrimes-chan, I will NOT -Oh.” Parker blinked at Kongou, who had recoiled from the small window; he turned on a friendly smile at her. “How can I help you, Miss Kongou?”

Kongou paused, taking in Parker's sudden shift, before answering. “Good afternoon, Chief Parker! I was just wondering if you have seen Admiral Goto recently; it's teatime, and I know how much he loves his tea!”

Parker heard the cough of 'bullshit' from behind him, and he knew Kongou heard it, too. “Is the Admiral in there with you?” Parker merely glanced behind him, and called out; “Weiss, we all know you hate Japan's obsession with tea. Stop projecting.”

Weiss appeared behind Parker at the security shutter. “Sorry Miss Kongou. I tend to project my tea-hate on everyone.” Kongou smiled at him, “No worries Mister Weiss. I know how much you American sailors love your coffee!” Weiss nodded to her and disappeared back into the room.

Parker looked at Kongou calculatingly. “Hey, Kongou. Have you ever tried Navy Coffee?”

“No, why?”

It's the access card. Someone like Admiral Settle what top level clearance can use that card to get access to all kinds of things that inappropriate access would get you shot. Fortunately for him, the CAC is pretty much useless without a PIN.

Still, handing it off to someone else (who, I might add, may not even have a security clearance) is a really, really stupid idea. As in court-martial in dishonorable discharge level stupid. Hell, treason level stupid if things go really badly

“No, why?”

Parker disappeared into the room, and came back to the door holding a steaming cup of his 'personal brew'. He offered it to Kongou, who sniffed at it questioningly.

“Try it, maybe you'll kick Goto onto the stronger stuff, and he'll be easier to find,” he said with a secretly sadistic smile.

Kongou took a tentative sip. Parker saw her face change from innocent curiosity, to the look of the condemned, and finally settle on his old favorite: 'wired for light, sound, navigation, hot ops, and battlestations'. Her hand was already starting to shake with the caffeine overload as she handed the cup back to Parker.

“I-I think that's a little too strong for the Admiral, Chief. Or me. If you see the Admiral, could you please tell him his tea is on his desk? I think... I think I need to go for a walk...”

Parker watched as she started to twitch out of sight. “Cheerio Miss Kongou!” he called after her.

As he re-latched the shutter, he turned to face Goto. “Well, I think she'll be out of your hair for a while.”

Goto smiled with relief at him. “Thanks, Chief. Ever since the Bonin Islands, she's been more clingy than usual. I owe you one.”

Parker began calculating. “Maybe you can pay the debt here and now, sir...”

“What are you thinking, Chief?”

Parker ran with it, “Well, you see, Admiral, it's like this; I've just recently become aware of some certain sonar recordings in the possession of the ICR and...”

Goto held up his hand. “Let me stop you right there, Chief. We've already tried to get those recordings from the ICR, you're not the first to ask. They buried us in a paper trail so thick we're still trying a year later. If you want them, and I don't blame you, You're gonna have to really do some shit to get them.”

Parker started to fume at this. Those tapes, even if they were just goddamn whale farts, were important. For the blasted whale hunters to bury them behind a wall of paper smacked of ego. He'd need some real secret squirrels to get-

Goto saw the change in Parker's face. “What are you thinking, Parker?”

Parker looked at him. “I need a team- an honest-to-god special operations team, two interpreters, a passable cover story, and no questions.”

Goto smiled at him. “That, I think I can help you with...”

Right. Well, time to tick off Lt. Hate. We who are about to die, salute you.

* * *

THE ADVENTURES OF BIG BROTHER HATE, WEE WILLIE, AND BIG LI’L SIS SAMMY!

part 01

“Take Willie and Sammy out, the Skipper said,” Hate grumbled as he led his flotilla of one destroyer, one battleship-grade destroyer escort, and one PT boat on their merry way to the Daiei Yokosuka shopping mall.

“Go shopping, he said. Don’t be lazy settling-” The pun hissed past the gaps of his gnashed teeth. “-for the PX, he said. Find a real shopping mall outside the base, he said… for willie pete’s sake, I’m a mule-headed Marine, not an actual packmule...”

“Arf!” loyally agreed PT-109 as it padded after its master-commander.

“Cheer up, Hate,” Sammy told him. “At least this gets you away from that light cruiser who hates your guts.”

“I’m not running away from anything.” Hate scoffed at the notion. “Least of all that oversized tin can.”

To quote Harder, Jintsuu was a PUUUSSSYYY. In other words-

All bark, no bite, he imagined the Skipper saying just before dodging Hate’s dope-slap.

“I’m just advancing in a different direction,” Hate averred.

“Dude, I offered to kick her butt for you,” Sammy pointed out.

“And I told you that I could handle her butt myself.”

Not that he doubted her. Sammy had taken on the entire battle line of the IJN off the shores of Samar, repeated the feat on Choukai, Mogami, and Chikuma, and then used her torpedo rack to club an Abyssal to its second death off Iwo Jima Electric Boogalo II.

“Oooh, so you gonna tap dat ass?” (1/4)

Just started reading archive of MGNQ, that shitty writefag in the beginning almost made me stop. Extremely cringeworthy stuff.

The whole married to Mami shtick, and his writing was close to 3rd-grade level. Speling and grammar were technically correct, but prose and progression were just so BLAND. As well as following the main character around, interacting with things that had canon happened in a way that would make it nigh-impossible for his self-insert character to have intervened and not been mentioned in the main quest before hand.

Fankly, the hardest part about reading it is the inability to go in and just SAY that to change it or stop him when he asked for feedback in thread 26~ish

Our last reactor officer before I got off was a gigantic incompetent asshole with the integrity of an Enron executive. He ignored the reactor operator when the reactor operator told him *four times in a row* that switching off a certain circuit for maintenance would be highly illegal, made the ReOp do it anyways, and proceeded to BLAME THE REOP IN THE INCIDENT REPORT.
Still wasn't a reactor accident, since we were shut down at the time and the ReOp immediately turned the circuit back on wen the Hey Dumbass You Just Disabled Both Sides Of The Emergency Reactor Fill System alarm sounded, but still, fuck that guy with a barbed wire buttplug and no reacharound.

In lesser problems:
>About half of the new tech they were testing with the Bush, including the supply elevator, was broken from the start
>A bunch of our less-than-major equipment, like bilge pumps and shit, got stolen and replaced by hand-me-downs from the Carl Vinson while we were in the shipyard, finishing the process of getting built
>The crew on the first deployment was actually really good, and completely fucking swept the competition to be the ship with the Battle E for that year among Atlantic carriers
>Shortly before I got out, I discovered that the navy inventory system actually had a significant oversight which caused supply to order useless fucking gaskets that didn't do what we needed them to do
So in shipgirl terms, a smart kid with a bunch of scarring from surgical stitches.
>>
>>42183614
(2/4)

Internally, Hate immediately refused the notion. Jintsuu was not his type. Hate preferred Valkyries with a side of hotel manager.

Plus, Jintsuu was Naka’s sister. Naka was a bro. One did not hit on the sister of one’s bro.

A small part of him considered voicing agreement. His considerable reputation as the slayer of ship-sluts required significant upkeep. It wasn’t everyday he could feast on the tears of otaku. Every action to increase his legend counted.

But someone needed to be the responsible adult in this flotilla of mismatched ship-girls and boat-corgi. And since the Skipper had decided to act like an irresponsible hormonal teen (like the time he handed his fucking CAC to Arizona), that left Hate to fill the gaping maw. So he ignored Sammy and turned his attention to his other ward.

Willie appeared to be more downcast than usual. At least she wasn’t vibrating so hard that light passed through her or stuttering like a quad Bofors trying to gun down a kamikaze. Progress!

“So what’s got you down this time, squirt?” Hate asked.

“I wish Dadmiral and big sis Arizona was with us,” she mumbled.

Hate very carefully considered how to explain the facts of life to the naive destroyer. “They’re busy,” he gritted out.

“Very busy,” Sammy snickered, knowing full well what (or rather, who) their admiral was doing.

“With training,” Hate persisted while shooting a glare at his sister Marine.

The warning shot sailed over Sammy’s head. “Physical fitness training.” She stressed the first word.

“I know that,” Willie whined like a little kid, which she sort of was. “But Dadmiral only trains like that with big sis Arizona or Miss Shoukaku or Miss Higgins or all of them at the same time.”

The destroyer scuffed her heels, yipped in alarm as she nearly tripped, and caught herself just before she planted her face into the ground. “I want to train with him, too,” she sighed.

Hey all, this is the anon who posted the write up about the DDH last thread, as well as the primer on submarine warfare during the last battle. Seeing as the Littoral Combat Ship was brought up, I'm going to leave my thoughts on it here. In summation, the LCS is a mothership.

There are many things that have been said about the LCS, but I'll focus on the ASW side of things, as I'm most familiar with it. I also don't think anyone can argue against a replacement for our obsolete minesweepers which are stuck in port half the time. They have extremely low readiness rates and need to be replaced as of yesterday.

Many arguments are leveled against the ship being capable of ASW. It has waterjets instead of traditional propellers or so called shrouded propellers, and these create a lot of noise. It doesn't possess any ability to kill a submarine by itself, as it lacks ASROC or even just basic torpedo tubes. Hell, it even lacks a bow sonar, and must rely completely on a towed array. With all this in the way, how can the LCS perform adequate ASW? What weapon does it posses that could make up for these deficiencies? The answer can be found at the rear of the LCS- its aviation facilities. We'll ignore possible USVs, as the technology hasn't proven itself as of yet.

The LCS has an extraordinarily large hangar facility. It has room for an SH-60 and either two MQ-8B drones or one MQ-8C. You could squeeze two MQ-8Cs in that half of the hangar, but there wouldn't be much space to work on them inside the hangar. But why is this important? That makes for three ASW helicopters. As I mentioned earlier, the helicopter is the best tool for ASW. I would actually like to amend that statement. A VTUAV is even better. Crew fatigue is not as big an issue in a UAV than in a helicopter. Further, one LCS with two MQ-8Cs could probably keep one in the air at all times, to say nothing of two LCSs. In that manner, the LCS is going to perform ASW like the DDH does. At a distance.

Hate’s vocal cords ruthless strangled the immaculately conceived snort in his throat. Sammy’s snigger could’ve been mistaken for Ma Deuce fire. PT-109 lolled its tongue.

“W-w-when you’re b-b-bigger,” the snorting Sammy reassured Willie.

The older girl pouted. “So it’s because I’m just a destroyer? But Miss Higgins is a destroyer, too,” Willie argued.

“Yeah, let’s go with that,” Hate muttered.

“Are you kidding?” Sammy retorted. “Have you seen how much water Higgins displaces? That stern?” She held her hands before her and then spread them. “That gal counts as a light cruiser!”

“Knock it off, Sammy,” Hate growled. “Stop throwing fuel on the fire. Willie’s fine as she is.”

“I suppose a DFC’s fine, too,” Sammy ribbed. Hate rolled his eyes over the terrible pun.

“But I was never decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross,” Willie wondered. “My only decoration was-”

Her eyes glazed as she stared at her wrists, reminded of the resulting hullaballoo following her infamous accidental firing of a live torpedo at USS Iowa while President Roosevelt and Admiral King were aboard, her own personal day that would forever live in infamy.

“Handcuffs,” she mumbled.

I'm an agent on the oversight side of DOD (civilian of course, so I actually make money). Biggest thing to understand is that our contract system is so screwed up that were lucky to get the uniformed service folks missiles with warheads that actually fit the rockets, nuclear reactors that don't melt them selves down when you turn them on, and ships that… you know…float.

Serving on an aircraft carrier means that you're serving on a giant hunk of steel full of all kinds of things that will go boom, and built by the lowest bidder.

We've never actually taken any of our Nimitz class carriers into true open field combat. There's a decent chance if we did at least one of them would fall apart if we tried.

Also worthy of note that thanks to our current obsession with stealth, if we're fighting someone who can see through our style technology we have a major disadvantage because we traded stealth for worse payload.

Without preamble or any warning, Hate gave Willie a light cuff on the head.

“Eeep!” she squeaked.

“And what happened to the four battle stars they awarded you?” Hate reminded her.

“But-”

“Four stars.” Hate brought up an equal number of fingers. “One for each year you kept your crew safe. Remember what I told you about Arizona? What she’d give to trade places with you?”

Willie clammed up, only to yip like a corgi when Sammy clamped a companionable hand upon her left shoulder.

“I only have one battle star,” admitted the destroyer escort who’d fought like a battleship at the Battle of Samar. “And ninety of my boys never made it out of my hull. See, Willie? You’re better than me in one way!”

Sense out of Sammy? Hate decided to reward her later. (But not with ice cream. He’d seen firsthand what she could do when running off a sucrose high. That was a bad day to be Choukai, Chikuma, and the entire MP battalion assigned to Yokosuka.)

Satisfied that Willie was back on the right track, Hate went back to glowering at the mall ahead, only to freeze in place when she wrapped her thin arms around his waist without warning.

“Thank you, big brother,” Willie gratefully sniffled into his stiff spine.

Hate silently counted to ten. “Are you done?” he asked gruffly.

“Ah…” Willie hurriedly unwrapped herself from the scowling Marine. “I’m sorry, big brother…”

“Whatever. Let’s get this shopping trip done.”

With that said, Hate strode off. Sammy kept pace while the startled Willie made haste to catch up.

“Are you blushing?” the destroyer escort whispered to her fellow Marine.

“Shut up, Sammy,” Hate muttered.

“You are!”

(To be continued?)

Oh it's far worse than that, we have to award about one third of our contracts to certain types of disadvantage businesses (small business, veteran owned business, female owned business, disabled on business, etc.) that means that all kinds of people are getting contracts it really just have to demonstrate they have the bare minimum capability to perform. Certain parts of things are in fact built by people who know what they're doing , But we're not in the moon mission years anymore where we hire the best people to do the work and build redundancies into everything . The thing with the gaskets was not an issue with getting things supplied at all, it was an issue with the supply guys thinking two different gaskets were interchangable when they were nowhere near it.
Basically, the system listed the cross-section type, thickness, material, and internal diameter (width of the hole inside) of the gaskets, but didn't list the outside diameter. We wound up with a bunch of "replacement gaskets" for firehose nozzles - which are kind of important - that couldn't replace shit because the outside diameter was too small and they didn't jam into place properly, instead sliding around like hyperactive kids.

Also, holy shit how does the government not make the bidder responsible for their cost overruns on lowest bid contracts, what is this nonsense
>>
>>42183928
Fair enough, I have a bit of a different angle on it since I'm looking at things from the acquisitions and logistics side. Since we've never actually taken our latest generation stealth aircraft into real combat, we don't really know how it will perform.

As to the carriers themselves, the acquisitions reports a are nightmare to read. The military is going to support job of keeping them in top fighting form. But they simply were not designed to have this long of service life. Now, in the real world I have no doubt that they would aquit them sells well – but I meant my comment above to be within the context of this quest. Nimitz class carriers are not going to fare well if they have to fight something shooting actual guns at them. They were not designed to deal with that. If they have to get up close and personal, it's going to get ugly

>>42184051
I was referring to problems in general, not the particular problem you were discussing

That said, The average contracting officer on a major project graduated at the bottom of their class from a bottom 10% college, with a degree in philosophy and ancient languages. The contractors meanwhile hire the best and brightest to ensure that they come out on the winning side of any litigation or dispute. The only cases the government wins, are those that the contractor completely screwed out to such a degree that no amount of good legal talent can save them. Cost type contracts with no oversight to speak of are the reason why we have $1 trillion F 35 project and the VA hospital in Aurora Colorado but ultimately cost more than a guided missile cruiser, and still doesn't have any… you know, patients. Or a roof for that matter.

Wouldn't be hard to make, just do 5" discarding sabot rounds. AP performance would be much better than the ~2 inches at 10km. They would look like like the DU discarding sabot rounds used by the Abrams, just roughly 50% bigger.

There is this new tech we have now called FAPFSDS, which is the same fin stabilized discarding sabot rounds engineered to fragment after they punch through the main armour belt. Instead of punching a clean hole all the way through the target, the dart would break up into an expanding cone of fragments that have no trouble shredding through flimsy internal walls. This makes it much easier to hit something critical like the boilers, engines or magazines.

The game has so far depicted any kind of dependent craft (Akitsu Maru's landing craft, carrier-based planes, Akitsushima's type-2 flying boat) as fairy-piloted miniatures.
Beyond that KCQ has established independent craft that're smaller than a DE as animals, like the corgis.
>>
>>42184951
>Beyond that KCQ has established independent craft that're smaller than a DE as animals, like the corgis.

Personally I think of it as 'deployable' craft like carrier-borne fighters and bombers (or landing craft and minsubs) as fairey-piloted stuff; kind of an extension of a shipgirl herself, and larger multi-crew things as little doggies and such like corgis and dachshunds.

... this means that if Hornet launches B-25s it's gonna be like a person hand-launching an RC plane, but instead its an albatross or something.

Really, I thought the Kingfishers were better then the Seagulls?
>>
>>42185370
The Kingfishers, yes. The Seamew not so much. Kingfisher was a Vought a plane anyways.
>>
In any event, always jettison your seaplanes and their fuel and munitions before a surface engagement.
The Astoria was a fucking pyre thanks to a hit to her hangar
>>
>>42185396
I recall reading a veteran talking about Surigao Strait, where all the scout pilots flew their planes to a beach except for him.
>>
>>42185385
WHat was wrong with the Seamew?

Looks like a sound design.
>>
>>42185431
TLDR shit engine they never managed to fix the flaws of. None of these planes have spectacular performance anyways, the Kingfisher, Seagull and Seamew all max out at ~265kph.
>>
>>42185446
Well considering their purpose and threater of war. Wasn't that a good thing?
>>
>>42185431
>Lettice Curtis, in her book "Forgotten Pilots", stated 'that although its standard fuel tanks held 300 gallons, it would only just take off with the eighty gallons' fixed as the maximum for Air Transport Auxiliary trips. In addition the tail needed to be raised before becoming airborne, as 'it was possible to take off in an attitude from which it was both impossible to recover and in which there was no aileron control'.

It was a dangerously shitty plane.
>>
>>42184529
>but what about smaller ships or multi-person aircraft like the Enola Gay

I imagine it would be like Hornet's black arrow(That is.. .this story right? I dont think I'm mixing it up with other Kancolle fics/quests)
>>
>>42185515
Black arrow is VT-8, one of her flights of torpedo bombers that got cut down to a single man during Midway
>>
>>42185564
its not the doolittle bombers?
>>
>>42185680
It's not, pretty see planefag confirmed that a while ago
>>
>>42185491
Well America had better seaplanes then the germans, italians, and the Japanese.

Did the Beitish have any?
>>
>>42185722
The Short Sunderland for one. And it was arguable for the Japanese and Germans. Their heavy boats were the best of the war.
>>
>>42185722
The only thing I can remember currently is the Supermarine Walrus, which I remember HMS Rodney carrying.
>>
>>42185762
Well I meant single engine but I forgot about the flying boats.

Wasn't the American flying boat better?
>>
>>42185831
In terms of Single-engine ship-launched seaplanes, the German's Arado Ar 196 was a *superb* seaplane, with excellent reliability and performance.

You know the Germans make good stuff.
>>
>>42185918
With the ~slight~ downside of being complete maintenance whores and being at the end of a retarded logistics system.
>>
>>42185918
when they didn't get carried away.

>>42185945
That's a common german flaw that may vary depending on how impractical the thing is.
>>
>>42185962
>Arado Ar 196
But didn't German Production increase near the end of the war?

Today I learned that Supermarine Walrus had wheels.

Kanmusu Tenders when?
I'm assuming that if all battles we get into will turn into stuff like Bonin we might as well attach dedicated ships to for combat repair. And bolt on enough AA on them to make battleships forever scream point defense
>>
>>42185945
It was sufficiently practical to maintain that the Finns used it for specops work.

>Owing to its good handling on water, the Finnish Air Force utilized Ar 196s just for transporting and supplying special forces patrols behind enemy lines, landing on small lakes in remote areas. Several fully equipped soldiers were carried in the fuselage.
>>
>>42185983
I mean in terms of planned specs like that attempt at making a 1000ton super tank.
>>
>>42185945
>With the ~slight~ downside of being complete maintenance whores
I presume you're talking in *very* broad strokes, because the Arado was extremely simple and straightforward to maintain, in comparison to, say, a 109.
>>
>>42185983
Overall, yes, it did grow. Germany didn't go to full war time footing for far too long.
>>
>>42186055
>You know the Germans make good stuff.
It was a reference to this. Germany always lagged behind in a comprehension of logistics planning. Not that the other Europeans were any better really.
>>
>>42186099
...I was just make a joke with that shitty meme.
>>
>>42186118
I don't go to /k/ often enough to have the faintest clue about anything they go on about.
>>
>>42186154
It's not a /k/ meme, it's that old shamwow joke that's been around since forever.

(Although the first section hopefully going up on Wednesday will, unfortunately, not highlight them.)
