>Last time, you visited Ichigo’s house with your sister. The three of you quickly found out that Hollows are a little too good at Hida-and-Seek. Thankfully, you managed to fight your way out with the aid of your Core Drill and Ichigo’s mother while your sister and Ichigo escaped.

Dice Rolls: Higher is better, best out of three. Crits override normal rolls, and crit-success overrides crit-failure.
Whenever I ask for rolls other than d100, I’ll be taking the FIRST roll, unless I say otherwise. I take the first roll for Encounter rolls.
Time limit for votes is 7-8 minutes. I may provide extensions depending on the votes’ importance.

Your name is Uryu Ishida, six years old. It’s been a few days since the Hollow attack at Ichigo’s house. Now that Ichigo’s been in the hospital for a while, he’s allowed to have a few visitors. Namely, you and your sister. Your mother had opted to drive the two of you to Karakura Hospital.

Since the attack, you’ve been locked inside your house with only Usagi to play with. Arisawa calls occasionally, mostly in an attempt to find out exactly what happened at Ichigo’s. She’s asked about your health too, of course. It’s a nice gesture, you think. It’s sad that you can’t tell her anything, seeing as she can’t see ghosts like you and Ichigo.

You still feel a little guilty about the whole thing. Maybe if you hadn’t decided to play outside, or if you’d managed to sense the Hollows before they attacked Ichigo, or maybe if you’d decided to stick close to Ichigo instead of-

“Nii-san?” You turn to your sister, sitting on the seat to your left. She’s frowning, her brow knitted in worry. “You’re thinking bad thoughts again…”

>Usagi’s right. Thinking so negatively isn’t going to get you anywhere. Not to mention the fact that you’re worrying her.

“Sorry, sis.” You say. “Just thinking about the what-ifs and everything…” You shake your head, pushing away the thoughts. “But you’re right. Stuff like that’s not gonna get me anywhere. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.“

At that Usagi smiles in relief. “Well as long as you’re okay.” The two of you settle back into your seats, though you can still feel your sister glance at you ever so often. She’s clingy, you think, but she means well.
***
“We’re here,” Your mother announces. You look up from your seat, out the car window.

The visage of Karakura Hospital is as massive as always. You haven’t been here very often, but whenever you were out in the city, you always manage to pick out the huge building from wherever you happen to be. And to think, your dad’s in charge of the whole thing. It’s only a little terrifying.

“Well, there’s no time like the present. Do you have your gifts, you two?” Your mother asks. You nod, holding up the sack of chocolate and candy your mother and sister had gotten from Urahara-san. Attached to it with an application of tape is a small get-well card, from you and Usagi for Ichigo. Usagi holds up another get-well card, this time for Auntie Masaki.

“Yeah, we’re all ready,” you say, though you still feel a little leery about talking with Ichigo. “Come on, Usagi. No time to waste!” You quickly plaster on a bright smile, pushing your way out of the car.

You’ll be fine, and if need be, you’ll make sure Ichigo’s fine too. What are friends for, right?
***
It’s a little while later when the three of you find yourselves in front of Ichigo’s hospital room. Your mother nudges you forward. “Go on, Uryu. He’s waiting. Unless you want me to come with?”

>No, you and Usagi will be fine.
>You’d appreciate that, you think.

Knock softly on the door to make sure he's not asleep, then open it and greet him normally. We don't want to draw attention to the situation, make him feel bad about his inability to protect his mom. This was just a nasty accident, not anything to feel shame or guilt about. The Hollows got the drop on him, that's all, and if the situation had been reversed and we were the ones who had been taken down, we're sure he would have done just as well.

You turn towards your mother. “We’ll be fine, Mom.” You say. “You go on ahead and see Auntie Masaki.” Your mother nods, taking the card from Usagi, and stalks off. You turn back to the door.

You briefly think about surprising him as you usually do, but you throw it away just as quickly. If you tried something like that, you don’t know how he might react. He might freeze up, or scream, or cyr, or-

Your sister tugs at your sleeve again, shaking you from your thoughts. Yeah, no sneaky-times. Not now. Instead, you greet him like normal people would, rapping on the door with your knuckles. You hear a soft “Come in,” and taking that as your cure, you push the door open for you and Usagi.

Ichigo looks… well, he looks a fair bit worse off than usual. He’s wearing a small hospital gown that looks several sizes too large for him. The just-after-noon light filters in through the window. The rest of the room is made of several shades of grey and white, looking as sterile as the rest of the hospital. The only exception is the bedside table, which has a small bouquet of flowers sitting on it.

“Hey!” You say, waving at him. You plop the small bag of candies and the card on the bedside table next to the flowers, and pull up two seats from the corner, placing them cclose to the bed.

Ichigo blinks, surprised at you r entrance. He rubs his eyes and looks back up, as if to check that you’re real. “Uryu?” he asks, reaching out for you. Suddenly, he cringes in pain, holding his abdomen.

“H-hey! Don’t worry, I’m here! Don’t just overexert yourself like that. That’s bad, you know.” You frown.

Ichigo’s face breaks out into a small smile. “It really is you…” he says.

You frown, confused. “Of course it’s me. Why wouldn’t I be here? You’re my friend! Anyway,” you decide to change the topic before either of you do something embarrassing, like break into tears, “how’ve you been? Healing up okay?”

(1/?)

“I, erm, yeah, I guess. The doctors say that I’ll be out in a few weeks, end of the month at the latest.” Ichigo says, caught off-guard by the change in topic. “But, uh. Since I woke up I’ve been more worried about my Mom and you…”

“I’m fine.” You say with a shrug. You lift up your shirt. “See? Nothing." You roll your shirt back down. "As for your mom, Uncle Isshin said that she was healing up fine, too. She’s in the room next door.”

At your words and actions, Ichigo lets out a sigh of relief. “That-that’s good. I thought… no, never mind. It doesn’t matter. I’ve been reading a few books and just getting caught up on my homework while I was here. What about you? What’ve you been doing?”

You quickly tell him about the wondrous experience that was your practical grounding-out-of-worry. “Apparently, I get into too much trouble whenever I'm out alone,” you joke.

Ichigo chuckles at that. “Heh, maybe,” he says. You silently wait for him to say something, but his face soon screws up, and you’re not too sure if you should say something.

“Something wrong?” You ask.

“Well…” Ichigo flicks his gaze over to the door, currently ajar. “Mind closing the door?” You quickly do so, making sure to lock it, too. “You didn’t have to lock it, but that's fine, too. Um, your mom’s not gonna come back for a while, right?” You nod. “Okay. Um, where do I start…?”

Ichigo bites his lip. “W-well, my name means ‘to protect one thing.’ I wanted to protect my mom- but I already told you that, right?” Ichigo’s grip on the bedsheets tightens. “When those Hollows attacked,” Ichigo’s arm unconsciously drifts over to his abdomen, over his wounds, “I couldn’t do a THING.”

You open your mouth to interrupt, but Ichigo raises his hand. “It’s not because I couldn’t believe in my self- not just that.” Ichigo smiles at the memory of you defending him at the dojo. “I just- I literally froze up. My body wouldn’t listen to me. It was like- like I was t-trapped in my own sk-skin.” He swallows.

“I was just frozen in the middle of the street, in the middle of a Hollow attack. H-how bad at being a Quincy do you have to BE to do something like that!?” He laughs bitterly. “And-and when one of them leapt towards me, I was st-still sitting there, waiting to be rescued.

“T-that was when I finally managed to move. I wasn’t quick enough, though, and I was pinned to the ground.” You wince in empathy. “I could feel the thing’s Reiatsu all over me, like it was trying to swallow me, and when it bit down-“ Ichigo’s breathing quickens, “I just felt pain all over. It was the worst kind of pain- like a hundred sharp needles just pricked all over my skin. And when it started ripping its way through my body, clawing at me… T-that was when I blacked out.” Ichigo takes a few moments to steady his breathing. You gently pat his arm in support.

Eventually, he manages to regain what little composure he had. “When I woke up, I was stuck here in the hospital, everything still aching." You notice that he's outright crying, now.

"Do you know what I heard? Can you guess?” You stay silent, shaking your head. “I h-heard- I heard that it wasn’t just my Mom killing all the Hollows. I heard that YOU helped.” He says the last part almost in a whisper.

“One of my friends, the one who helped me out at the dojo the very first day he got there- he let himself get hurt. F-for me. And not just that either- he even saved my Mom! He got to be the hero again, even though I said to myself that I would try to improve. That next time, I would be able to actually do something.”

Ichigo looks at you. Even his eyes are bitter. “I-I’m sorry, Uryu. I-I guess… I guess I’m just a little jealous that you- that you’re able to do these sorts of things at the drop of a hat and… And I’m just stuck behind. It’s like I can’t even walk without someone there to lend a hand, while you’re out there, running around and helping everyone you see.”

Ichigo swallows, and wipes away at his eyes. “I- I guess I’m not the best friend, if-if I can’t even be totally happy that you saved my life…”

But you can't be so hard on yourself, man. You don't have any Quincy training, you shouldn't be expected to fight Hollows. Hell, I shouldn't, either, I just got lucky. Your mom saved me more than I saved her, all I did was distract the Hollows. She's the hero today, Ichigo. I'm just the sidekick."

Long One.

You decide to cut to the chase. Instead of saying anything, you instead throw every reservation about ‘pride’ or ‘dignity’ in front of your little sister, and silently glance at her. She agrees, just as silently.

The two of you reach out over the bed and give Ichigo a hug. He clearly needs one.

He sits in the bed, still shaking after telling his story, but is frozen in shock. The dam of emotions quickly breaks though, and soon you find yourself up one wet shirt and a sniffling Ichigo. That’s okay though- you’ll hug him until he feels better, no matter how long it takes.

When Ichigo’s breathing finally evens out, you and Usagi slowly pull away, looking at Ichigo. He seems to have calmed down, though his eyes are red from crying so much, and his hospital gown is crumpled and damp. Still, at least he looks better than before.

You open your mouth, deciding that of all times, NOW is definitely the best time to give Ishigo a good pep-talk… and to tell him of your own troubles, besides. “You know, I don’t even know how I do half the stuff I did back there.” You begin, slowly. “I wasn’t even really the ‘hero,’ like you said. The real hero was your mom- she took down almost all of them, while I barely managed to crack their masks. Honestly, I was a distraction, a really, really minor threat at best. All I could really do was weaken them and finish them off.

“And before you say that that was still more than what you did,“ this time, you’re the one cutting him off before he starts, “I’m going to say that you really should stop beating yourself up all the time. I was raised with this sort of stuff all around me, so of course I’m able to handle it better than you can, at least for now."

(1/?)
>>
>>42198769

“I don’t know why your family didn’t teach you this stuff so early, but I’m sure they must have had their reasons. And I can think of at least one right now- to protect you. And before you say that you don’t want to be protected anymore, I’m going to be a hypocrite and say that we’re only SIX, Ichigo. Even your father said that neither of us should be ready for this sort of thing yet.”

You smile a little, in spite of yourself. “Your parents want to protect you, and I would know because my parents do the same thing. They don’t want us to grow up too early, I think. I told you earlier that I was basically locked up for the past few days? That’s because I went and got myself hurt for like, the fiftieth time these past two years.”

Ichigo blinks. “Fiftieth?”

“Well, maybe I was exaggerating, but…” You tell him all about how much trouble you’d been getting up to. How you managed to awaken your strange power, only to put yourself in a coma. How your soul was so different that it scared both of your parents and your grandfather to no end. How even Usagi just wasn’t treated the same, simply because she was the result of something you had done. “I may not go out of my way to find trouble, but whenever it appears, I leap at it. My parents REALLY don’t like that, and if it were up to them, I’d bet I wouldn’t even be trained as a Quincy at this point, since I might just get myself killed.

“My father even told me that ‘Heroes die.’ And obviously, he doesn’t want to see me get buried a little early. Your parents just want the same thing for you, so don’t be so upset that you can’t protect yourself or even your loved ones quite yet.” You clap Ichigo on the shoulder, smiling encouragingly.

“And as for all of the stuff about me still being better than you at all of this spiritual stuff…"

"Well, that’s what training’s for, right? We train so that we can get better at the things we aren’t good at, and be the best at the things we are good at.” Taking your hand off of his shoulder, you stand up. You offer him your hand again, to shake. “Even if I won’t have as much time on my hands because I’ll be out with my grandfather, just know that if you ever need help training, you can count on me to give you a hand, alright? We can even shake on it!” You smile.

Ichigo looks at the offered limb, mystified. “So… you aren’t mad…?”

You shake your head. “Those sort of feelings are natural, Ichigo. I’m jealous of my dad sometimes, because apparently he’s one of those ‘special’ Quincies that my grandfather wants, but we don’t hate each other, right? And I’m even a little jealous of you, too. You get to see all your family all the time- my dad’s almost always out working, and my grandfather lives on the outskirts of the estate to hunt Hollows. I only ever really see Usagi and my mom every day. So, let’s just agree that we’re a little jealous of each other and be friends despite all that, okay?”

For what seems like a long while, Ichigo is silent, and you begin to fear that maybe you spoke a little too much, or that you said the wrong thing and that Ichigo would just push you away forever-

Your thoughts are immediately wiped away in a wave of relief when Ichigo tears up again and takes your hand, shaking it. Ichigo wipes at his eyes, and when he pulls his arms away, you see that he’s giving you a big grin. “Y-yeah. I can do that. Thanks, Uryu. You’re the best.”

The moment is sealed when Usagi, having snuck away while you blathered on and on, manages to rip open the bag of candy meant for Ichigo, spilling it all on the floor.

After laughing just a little at her expense, the three of you eat your way through the entire bag. It was all deliciously sweet.

“Ow!” You cry out, having fallen over thanks to a spar the past three times in a row. You blink, dazed.

“Get up, Ishida. You’re not going to get any better if you just stay lying down like that!” says Arisawa from the middle of the clearing.

You, Ichigo and Arisawa had decided to all practice together after Ichigo had finally been discharged from the hospital. Unfortunately for you and Ichigo, Arisawa didn’t have the decency to hold back even a little.

“Ugh… I think I’m going to stay down here for a little while. Why don’t you beat up on Ichigo for a while?”

Arisawa simply snorts in amusement before turning towards Ichigo. Ichigo, on the other hand, looks at you, his face panicked at your betrayal. “H-hey, wait! I didn’t bring my headgear today-“ You cut him off, tossing him your own. He deflates and sighs, walking over to the middle of the impromptu ‘ring’ the three of you had set up.

You breathe in the cool winter-turning-to-spring air. It feels great, you think, and it certainly helps when you’re taking a nice rest while training.

You look over at a corner of the clearing, where your sister was silently watching the three of you spar as she tossed handfuls of birdseed out into the forest.

What to do to pass the time? You could train a bit on your own, or now that your parents aren’t here to fuss all over you, you can try practicing your Reishi gathering (you’d stolen a peek at a family scroll or two.) Or you could strike up a conversation with your sister.

Hey, you said that you would start your official training a little later, but that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t start the slightest bit early! It’s not technically breaking your promise, anyway- you’re not gonna be firing Reishi arrows any time soon.

You tap Usagi on the shoulder, breaking her from her reverie. “I’m going to go and practice something alone. Don’t worry, I’ll take one of the phones with me. You can call with the other one if something happens.”

Usagi frowns, but nods. “Please don’t get yourself hurt though, Nii-san. Okay?”

You smile at her reassuringly and pat her on the head. Afterwards, you walk over to another corner of the clearing where your bag is, piled on top of the others. You pull out one of the phones your parents had decided to get you and Usagi, and stalk off to another clearing close by.

After placing the phone down somewhere close by, you sit on the ground, breathing in slowly.

Right, Reishi gathering. The scroll you’d ‘found’ had said that meditation would help, especially for beginners, so you continue with your deep breathing. After a while you slowly reach out with your spiritual senses, feeling the Reiatsu of your siter, Ichigo, and even Arisawa…

>Rolled 60 vs DC??= Failure!

…who doesn’t react. You don’t know what you were expecting, though. She wasn’t spiritually aware, as far as you knew, though she apparently dis believe that Ichigo when he said that you and he could both see ghosts.

At any rate, everyone is safe and sound as far as you can tell, so it’s time to move on to actually gathering the Reishi. You feel around a bit more, and note that the entire area is rife with spiritual particles. You wonder how many you could actually take in…

…No, you shouldn’t push yourself. You did that before, several times, and you almost got yourself killed for it. And if your folks ever found out, they’d be even more disappointed in you. Best to take it slow for once.

You breathe in again, feeling out for the spiritual particles around you. Finally, using your Reiryoku, you slowly begin to scoop out the spirit particles from the area around you, gathering it into a ball in the palm of your hands. When you feel like you can’t gather much more without having to push your body, you open your eyes…

>Rolled 36*1.1= 40/100 to Reishi Gathering Skill!

Well, it’s not as big as you’d hoped. At least you know your limits now, and all that’s left is stretching those limits, a little bit at a time by training. You allow the ball to sit in your palms for as long as you can, using your Reiryoku to keep it in place.

The drain on your spiritual energy quickly becomes palpable, and by the time you allow the ball of spiritual particles to dissipate, you’re left physically exhausted. You’re a little disappointed in spite of yourself, if you’re honest.

“Did I miss something here?” You ask, raising an eyebrow. You shoot a look at your sister. “Usagi, what did you do this time?”

Usagi quickly darts back up from her position, looking back at you. Her face is fraught with fear and panic and a little bit of embarrassment. “I-I don’t know! I just hit Arisawa-san and then she sort of, u-uhm, fell over?”

You blink. “Wait, you’re saying you won? Against Arisawa? In a spar?”

“U-uh… I don’t know! Is that what we were doing? Sparring? Arisawa-san just told me to hit as hard as I could and-“ you wave at her, cutting her off.

“Start at the beginning, Usagi.” You sigh, rubbing your head.

“Uhm, well, I was watching Arisawa-san and Ichigo-san sparring while I was feeding some of the pigeons birdseed. Ichigo-san caught me watching and asked me if I wanted to learn. I said yes, since I thought it looked interesting.” You nod your head, gesturing for her to continue. “Ichigo-san asked me if I wanted an in-depth lesson from Arisawa-san. She protested against the idea at first, but eventually acquiesced when I was, ah, persistent.

“She told me to put on the headgear, and then said to just strike her as hard as I could while trying to control my strength, so that’s what I did.”

“I see. What happened when you did as Arisawa-san said, Usagi?”

“Erm… she fell down?” Usagi says again, a questioning lilt to her voice.

“Fell down?” Says Ichigo, “More like flew a couple feet back before crashing to the floor! Tatsuki-chan’s lucky we found such a large clearing.”

You shoot a questioning glance at your sister. She nods in confirmation.

“Ishida…” You hear someone groan. That must be Arisawa. “Does everyone… in your family… have such crazy… strength? Seriously…” Arisawa sits back, having awakened from her daze. She winces, palming her abdomen. “Your sister’s fast, too…”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Just gimme a second.” Arisawa grunts, pushing herself fully up to her feet, ignoring Ichigo’s attempts to help her up. “Look, I can do this just fine myself, Ichigo…”

“Wait. Let me take a look at you.” You say, interrupting her. “Lift up your shirt, quickly.”

“…What?” Says Arisawa after a beat.

“Lift up your shirt. I can’t exactly get a good look at your injuries if you don’t. Don’t worry, my dad’s a doctor, you’ll be fine if I just take a look.”

“I-I’m not going to take off my shirt!” Says Arisawa, flushing. “Especially not right here!”

“I’m not asking you to take it off,” you say, rolling your eyes, “and besides, what difference does it make if your shirt’s on or off? Ichigo did it in front of you all the time when you wanted to look at his wounds. This is the same thing.”

“It is not the same-“

“Tatsuki-chan,” says Ichigo, cutting off her rant. “Uryu’s not going to do anything to you. Besides, I’m not even sure he understands why you’re acting this way.” At that, Arisawa huffs, but decides to relent, rolling up her shirt with a pout. She quickly points out the part of her stomach where Usagi had struck her.

You hum, surveying the damage, poking and prodding the spot. Arisawa winces. “Yeah, that’s definitely going to bruise later,” you say. “Be thankful she didn’t hit you in the solar plexus, though. That might have caused some real damage. I’d suggest you take it easy sparring for the next couple days. Oh, and get it bandaged up, probably.” You adjust your glasses, like you’ve seen your father do whenever he was saying something particularly profound. “Other than that, you’re good to go!”

Arisawa hurriedly pulls her shirt back down, mumbling something along the lines of, “I could have figured that out myself,” before stomping over to her bag in an embarrassed huff, taking out her lunch. Ichigo decides to follow after her, saying that he would calm her down.

“Well, first things first. You didn’t use your Reiatsu or anything, did you? You ask, frowning. You’re pretty sure you would have noticed if Usagi had somehow managed to increase her spiritual pressure by enough to knock Arisawa flat, but it’s good to cover all of your bases.

“N-no! Of course not! O-or at least, I don’t think I did.”

“Well, can you tell me what you DID do?”

“Uhm…” Usagi scrunches up her brow in thought. “Well, I wanted to punch her as hard as I could without losing control of myself. So that’s what I did. I don’t know what else to say… Oh! I remember focusing on it really, really hard.”

You hum, frowning. That was wholly unhelpful. An idea pops into your head. “Wait a sec. Usagi? Do you mind going over to that…” your eyes rake over the clearing. “…log over there, for me? I have an idea.”

You quickly explain to her what you were doing- you were going to try to observe her using your spiritual senses, while she did whatever-she-did-earlier. It was practically foolproof, if you had to say so yourself.

“Alright on the count of three, okay Usagi? One, two...”

>Rolled 71 vs. DC60! Success!

“Three!” Usagi’s fist darts forward, striking down onto the log, and in a shower of woodchips, into the log. Her eyes widen in surprise at her own strength, while your own eyes widen for a different reason.

“Okay. I think…I think I know what happened. You can take your hand out of the log, now.” Usagi nods, then attempts to pull her arm away.

“E-eh!? I-it’s not coming out, nii-san…”

…You may not have thought this out as well as you thought you did.

After a few pained whimpers, a bottle of iodine and quite a few bandages, you take a final look at your handiwork to make sure you did everything correctly.

After you and Usagi managed to very slowly and carefully pull her arm out of the log, there was still the problem of the several splinters left. You had to pull the smaller ones out with tweezers. Thankfully, Usagi had a pretty high pain tolerance- she only cried at the very end, when there was an especially long sliver of wood you had to take out. After that, you had washed out and bandaged her hand and forearm.

“Welp, I think that’s it,” you say with a relieved sigh. “I don’t think we’re going to try THAT again for a while. Anyway, about that thing you did. I think…”

You rub your chin. You’ve seen Uncle Isshin do that a few times whenever he was particularly puzzled. “I’m pretty sure you’re absorbing the Reishi around us. Not like how a Quincy does,” you say as she opens her mouth, “but rather, you’re directly absorbing it into…something. I’m unsure about the actual differences, but the big one is that you’re directly using your own Reiryoku, rather than making a weapon out of it.”

“O-oh. So, I’m not a Quincy…?” Says Usagi, a note of disappointment in her tone.

“Sorry sis. You aren’t. Or if you are, you’re a different kind of Quincy. On the other hand…” You give her a smile. “Maybe you’re like me! We’re both different from how normal Quincies do things, anyway, so it doesn’t really matter, I think. Anyway, if you want to train that power of yours, you’re going to have to do it with some supervision. Don’t worry, I have the perfect idea for a training spot; I’ll tell you about it later.”

“Eh? Train-?”

“I’ll just have to ask Mom about it later…”

“Wait-“

“Don’t you worry, little sis!” You say, patting her head. “Your Big Brother Uryu will take care of everything. You’ll see! Anyway, I think Ichigo’s managed to calm Arisawa down, so let’s get back to talking with them, eh?”

Even as a mixed-blood, Uryu'd recognize that she was using some sort of Quincy-specific Reishi manipulation like Blut.

Of course, he wouldn't know what it is precisely, but them's the breaks.

Suffice to say that Usagi is most certainly NOT a Quincy. Uryu just wants some more friends who can see/fight spooky ghosts, really.

Thankfully, it seems like the woods are quiet at this time of the night, like you’d thought they’d be. Not even grandfather is up this late to hunt Hollows, and from what you know, the entire Ishida Estate was carefully warded to help repel Hollow attacks. Of course, it wouldn’t keep out the more powerful Hollows, but there weren’t a lot of things that could keep those out.

At any rate, the walk towards the spot your mother had shown you was completely uneventful. You’re secretly a little thankful for that- you’ve had a fair bit of excitement in your life already.

“Where are we going Nii-san?” Usagi asks for what seems like then bajillionth time.

“Like I said, it’s easier to show you. And we’re almost there, anyway,” you answer with a sigh. You flick your gaze around the area-

“!” Your sister cries out, having tripped over something. You managed to catch her before she toppled to the floor. She mumbles a soft “I’m fine, nii-san,” while you look her over for any scratches or scrapes, none of which she has, thankfully.

You stand back up, glancing at the area again. “Alright, I think we’re here you murmur softly. Stay quiet and don’t move, okay?” You say sharply, glancing at your sister. She nods, hurriedly.

You slip out the silver vial your mother had given you a while earlier. When you had asked, she was happy to tell you, though she was careful to tell you only to use it during the day, when you could properly see what you were doing.

Of course, she never said that you couldn’t find another vial and use THAT one at night.

Kneeling down towards the soil, you pop open the cap, revealing the bluish, glowing liquid inside. You’re only going to have one shot at this, so you’d better do it right…

First, you try out the foreign words on your tongue. You had practiced saying them all week whenever you could, but to your frustration, you weren’t able to say them quite as well as your mother could. You can only hope that it’s not going to matter any. “Alright Usagi, cover your eyes,” you say. “Open them back up when I tell you to.”

“Glanz auf meinen Pfad; Zeige mir den Weg.” You whisper. At your word, the liquid inside seems to bubble in anticipation, and you pour it into the soil, covering your eyes.

Like before, there’s a bright flash of energy, and afterwards, you open your eyes back up. Nudging at your sister, you tell her to do the same.

Just like you, Usagi is struck speechless as she looks around the clearing, totally entranced by it beauty. She turns to you, curiosity easily visible on her face.

“Look up.”
“Up-?” You smile as your sister is instantly enraptured by the skies above. Her eyes dart back forth, trying to take everything in.

“I-I… Wow…” She breathes. You chuckle a little, and lead her over to the stump that you and your mother had sat on before. It was easily large enough for the two of you to sit next to each other comfortably, though Usagi cuddled up against you anyway.

That was fine. It was pretty cold out here this late at night, anyway.

“U-Uhm… What… What is this place…?” Whispers Usagi, as if afraid of breaking the comfortable silence. Whispering just as quietly, you explain to her what this place is, and that you’d decided to take it for yourself since Father was apparently too busy to use it any longer.

“So this place is safe?” You nod. “Wow… This is what you meant by a place we could train, right?” You nod again, smiling. “I can definitely feel the safety this place provides. It’s almost like a blanket…” Usagi giggles. She quiets though, her brow wrinkling in thought. “Wait… you said that maybe you’d bring Ichigo-san here sometime. Why not now? I’m sure he’d appreciate it…”

“Well… I guess I wanted this place to be special for you.” You scratch your head. “You know, how it was special for Father, and Mom, and me, I wanted to make this place special for you, too.”

“You didn’t have to do anything like this...”

“You’re my sister. Why wouldn’t I do something like this? You’ve got just as much of a right to this place as I do.” Usagi quiets down at that.

“Do you… Do you mean that?” She asks, hesitant.

“Of course I mean it.” You frown. “Hey. Just because you don’t fit in quite yet doesn’t mean that you’re not my sister, Usagi. Okay?”

You hear her sniffle, and thinking quickly, you give her a hug. Hugs are always a good way to calm someone down, you’ve learned. After the sniffling stops, you pull away from her, and look her sternly in the eyes. “Don’t start crying on me, okay? We. Are. Family. Nothing’s going to change that. Ever.” You say. She nods, and you smile at that.

You turn back up to the sky, and start babbling on about how you were planning on making this a small training spot just for the two of you, plus Ichigo and anyone else who could help you fight Hollows. You think it’s cool, having this whole super-secret training ground, all to yourself and your friends.

Finally, you tell her about the stars, and the small number of constellations you know about. You tell her how amazing it is to have this perfect stargazing spot out in the Estate, and that you’ll visit the place whenever you need to cool down from Quincy training later.

At the mention of Quincy training, you notice that Usagi almost… deflates.

“Is something wrong?” You ask worriedly.

Usagi pauses, and she almost seems to shrink back into herself. “W-well…” You prod her gently. She takes a deep breath, and looking at you, she says, “Nii-san, why do you have to leave for Quincy training so soon?” I overheard Father talking, and he still disapproves of you starting so early. So… why? Couldn’t you start a little later? Why now? Why this year?” She stares at you expectantly.

You think about your answer. It’s clear that this isn’t just about your father’s disapproving attitude towards the spiritual arts in general…

“I’ve told you everything that’s happened to me so far, Usagi. I’ve trusted you with a lot. And you know exactly how lucky I am, too, just to be sitting here with you, stargazing. But…” You sigh. “I can’t just rely on my luck forever. I’ve already knocked myself unconscious multiple times, and barely survived a Hollow attack. What’s going to happen next? I have to be at least a little ready.”

“I guess… that makes sense.” Usagi says slowly. “No one’s luck a hundred percent of the time. Right?”

You nod. “Right. Life’s like that- sometimes, you can let luck run its course and you’ll be fine in the end. Other times, you can’t just let probability screw you over. You have to take life by the horns. You get what I’m saying, right?”

Usagi nods. “I think so… but…” She continues to frown. “I still don’t like it…”

“You’re talking like we’ll never see each other again, sis. Cheer up- We’ve got until my birthday, and that’s in November! Not to mention the fact that you’ll still see me at least once a week.”You try to cheer her up. She still looks away, despondent. “Look, Usagi. I’m not just going to up and LEAVE, okay? Sure, I’ll be gone more often than not, but I’m not going to just disappear into thin air. I promise.”

Finally, she cracks a smile. “If you say so, Nii-san. Thank you.” She returns to her own stargazing, asking you tell her about the stars again. You smile at her enthusiasm. If you’re going to head up to see those stars up close someday, you’d definitely like to bring her along.
