“Yo.”

Last night it rained. A brief shower descended from the sky, drenching the rooftops and lights of Akumachi City. You heard the pitter-patter of raindrops splashing against your bedroom window, before you closed your eyes and delved deep into a well-deserved rest. The scene had been strangely enjoyable—the cold rain providing a nice antithesis from the heat and aridness of Pyre Ruin valley.

No doubt Shizuka and her squad had worked around the clock, battling the sudden influx of Shadows spawning beyond the city walls. At least it wasn’t fog. Fog meant blaring sirens, cramped underground shelters and anti-Shadow Operative patrols around the surface.

“So, how are you feeling this fine morning?”

“Like someone just split apart my ribcage with a power drill.”

“…bad dreams, Takashi-kun?”

“You have no idea, Celeste.”

Another school day is about to begin. The attendees of Akumachi-Kirijo flow through the open gate, oblivious to the barren landscapes and monster-infested dungeons of the Blackened Void. Presumably they all had their own troubles to mull over. The academy was notorious for its intense competition, after all.

“I didn’t know you could cook.”

“Well, I’ve mostly baked cakes and sweets for myself to eat. I’ve never tried making proper meals before. It’s a whole new ball game!”

“Which explains why you burnt the scrambled eggs this morning, right?”

“Yeah…”

You and Celeste continue forwards at a brisk pace, heading towards the statue of the academy’s founder. Then your eye catches a glimpse of someone. A person with messy and spiky blonde hair.

“Isn’t that…”

“You’re right! Yoohoo! Akikazu Osaragi-san!”

The boy in the question freezes dead in his tracks. Slowly, he cranes his neck to stare at the two of you. He looks like he’s just been introduced to the concept of photography and isn’t quite sure he approves. Stick a pair of antlers on his skull and call him a deer caught in the headlights.

“You guys…” he mutters. There isn’t a single scratch of bruise on his body. Of course not—the two of you practically dunked yourselves into Hebi-Ko’s hot springs yesterday.

“Hey!” Celeste runs up to him with a smile. “You doing alright?”

“I, that’s….” Akikazu stutters.

“Weren’t you listening?” You say, marching up to her. “I was talking to the guy last night. He’s fine.”

“Never hurts to double check!” Celeste grins.

“Wait. Wait a min—”

“C’mon, Takashi-kun! You need to think positive.”

“If anything, I’m the positive one. I’m the guy who has faith in Akikazu’s ability to not keel over on the spot.”

“Hold up, you morons!” Akikazu suddenly yells. “Listen to me!”

The two of you turn to him, completely unfazed. “Yes?” You ask.

“Why the hell are you guys talking to me?” Akikazu shouts.

“Why wouldn’t we?” Celeste questions. “Don’t you remember what happened yesterday?”

“How could I? I’m not a dumbass, Tachibana!” Akikazu scowls. “But that and what happens at school are two completely different things!”

“What are you talking about?” You say.

Celeste puts a finger to her lips and thinks. “I might’ve heard whispers on the grapevine. Like how you and the student council president are secret—”

Utter horseshit and anyone who says that deserves to be God Hand-ed to death.” Akikazu growls, shutting the idea down before it can sprout wings and take flight into the blue sky. “I know the two of you are new, but you’d have to be brain-dead skullfucks to not notice what others say about me.”

“And?” You say, titling your head.

“Look Takashi, it’s better if we don’t talk to each other at school.” Akikazu says. Yet, there is less anger in his eyes than his voice suggests. “I’ll join any adventures in the Blackened Void or whatever it’s called, but outside it we stay the hell away from each other. Okay?”

“…what.” Akikazu says back, his voice flatter than a squashed Maya.

“We fought together against the black knight. That means we’re cool with each other now.” That was how nee-san operated. Her greatest highlight of her middle school life was making fast friends with Tsugumi, Viola and Daisuke—achieved by punching out thugs together. “Right, Celeste?”

“Yep! You don’t have to act all shy around us, Akikazu.”

“That’s not what I’m talking about!” Akikazu snarls. “Aren’t you two, you know…”

“Pardon?” You say.

“You guys are rookies in this academy! Don’t you have your reputations to think about?”

You and Celeste glance at each other, confused. Then the meaning behind his words slowly begins to sink in, like a lightbulb suddenly being repaired and filling the metaphorical room with a radiant glow.

“Ohhh, that’s what you mean.” Celeste nods.

“Yeah, I think I get it now.” You mutter.

“Thank you.” Akikazu sighs. “Now, get the hell—”

“Too bad we don’t care!” Celeste laughs.

Akikazu looks on the verge of turning crimson and unleashing a torrent of shouts and swears, but instead turns around and slams his palm on his forehead. You wonder if asking further would cause him to lose his temper. He lets out a snarl and glares.

With that, he shoves past a pair of giggling schoolgirls and storms further into the academy. You and Celeste look at each other, again.

“Totally tsundere.” Celeste says, in a hushed breath.

“No, I’m positive I’m right. You know, that rumor about Akikazu and the student council president being secret lovers might hold some weight after all…”

The night is young. The city lights wash over the towering skyscrapers and twisting roads, creating a field of illumination to the birds above. You sit in the dining room of your apartment, eating the meal Shizuka has graciously cooked. Rice, grilled mackerel, cucumber salad, fried chicken and miso soup. You spoon mouthfuls of the grub and swallow it all down into your stomach.

“So Takashi, how was your week?” Shizuka says.

“Alright.” You mutter. “Why ask, nee-san?”

“Because I care about my little brother!" Shizuka smiles. “Is that a crime now?”

“No.” You reply. “It’s just that nothing much happened. I woke up, ate breakfast, attended classes, ate dinner, studied, watched stuff online and fell asleep. Same stuff as always, nee-san.”

“Come now.” Shizuka says. “Have a little faith in your beloved nee-san. I’ve known you for sixteen whole years. I can read you like an open book, Takashi. You’ve become a lot more outgoing and spirited ever since you got your Persona, haven’t you?”

“Well…”

“You shouldn't feel embarrassed.” Shizuka giggles. “It's great! I’m actually really happy that you’ve started to find more enjoyment in your life. Especially now that you’ve got a few friends.”

To go into more detail, you spent Wednesday and Friday afternoon in the lower floors of the gym, practicing with a bunch of sweaty guys (and girls) in sports clothes. The training was rigorous, but invigorating. You felt your inner strength climb just a tiny bit higher with each session. You don’t remember ever experiencing such a rush in the past. Maybe because you now awakened your Persona, and was constantly gravitating towards the bloodthirsty world of combat.

“Hey Takashi.” Takauji had said on Wednesday. “You interested in kickboxing?”

“Kickboxing?” You had repeated. “Um, no. Why?”

“Eh, It’s just that I think you could be decent at savate. You look like the type of guy who could use both his hands and feet.”

“...huh?” You blink.

“Well, I’m just speculating. And besides, you need to work on the basics before you choose a style.” Takauji had laughed. “Your straights and footwork are still clumsy, man. But that what I’m here for, ain’t it? Let’s go!”

“Augmentation? Yeah, I use it. Mostly to shove some extra power into my fist.” Takauji had said. “Other guys augment their attacks with fire, ice or whatever. More like "Elemental attacks aren't something he uses, so don't worry about them when fighting him", I think. But that couldbe found out by watching him fight anyway, so he still shouldn't be too worried. By the way he talks he's been in some duels of his own, I'm sure his style is known by now. Actually, he was the one who told us to be careful about people finding out about our Persona's abilities, so maybe he just got burned badly and is paranoid about it now.

On Friday though, something odd occurred. You had just finished practicing dodging. It involved you trying to sneak out Takauji’s fists. They hit you more times than they didn’t, but Takauji would always give that cheerful grin of his and wait for you to climb to your feet. Then the exercise would resume. Eventually though, you managed to get a hang of it and actually dodged half of Takauji’s blows, before promptly being shoved in the temple and sent crashing down onto the mats.

“Good work today.” Takauji had smiled, giving you a hand up. “Y’know Takashi, you actually surprised me.”

Your mind flashed back to the murder of crows and the black knight. Smashing, burning, electrocuting and backstabbing. “Sort of.” Is what you eventually muttered.

You went towards the staircase to exit the gym, when you noticed a girl lurking around the entrance. For a moment, you almost mistook her for a boy. Short snow-white hair, piercing blood-red eyes, not much meat around the torso and dressed in the academy uniform. She was glancing around the training space, her mouth in a closed line. You noticed her skin was pale, as if she had never spent much time in the sun.

“Can I help you?” You asked, carefully.

“Oh, hello there.” The girl said. “Is Takauji here?”

“Yeah, he’s just chatting with the sensei.” You said. “What’s up?”

“Nothing. I’m just waiting for him.” The girl replied,. “Carry on.”

“Oh, are you one of his friends?”

The girl stared at you with those creepy eyes of hers, as if she was trying to read your soul. With a completely and utterly serious tone, she said this. “Actually, I’m Takauji’s fiancée.”

Your first instinct was to doubt the girl. Then you reconsidered. There were students in Akumachi-Kirijo rich enough to literally wallpaper their bedrooms with money. Daughters of police chiefs, sons of major CEOs, heirs to royal families…those kinds of individuals were sharing the same school as you. An arranged marriage wouldn’t be completely out of hand. Having said that, Takauji wasn’t exactly the shining example of decadence and wealth but whatever.

“Wow, lucky him.” Is what you said.

“Indeed.” The girl nodded. “Are you one of Takauji’s friends?”

“I guess so?”

“Then I’ll make sure to invite you. We’ll be having a western style-wedding. I’ve always admired their lascivious white gowns.”

You wondered if this girl was pulling your leg. Her voice was so deadpan it was hard to tell. Was she one of those fabled legends of irony.

You shrugged. “Hey Takauji,” You shouted. “Your wife is here!”

A pause. “I don’t have a wife.” Takauji yells back.

“He’s lying.” The girl had said. “It’s me.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Wait a minute…” You saw Takauji come running over. “Kanami!” He cried.

“Hello, Takauji.” The girl apparently named Kanami said, still in that soft, monotone voice of hers. “Ready to walk home?”

“What are you telling Takashi here?”

“His name is Takashi? Understood.” Kanami said.

“She said she was your fiancée.” You said.

Takauji had stared at you with the expression reminiscent of the words ‘Not this shit again’. Then he sighed. “She’s wrong.”

“No I’m not.” Kanami insisted. “I’m his fiancée.”

“What—not you too, Takashi!” Takauji moaned.

“See, even your friend agrees.” Kanami said. “I don’t know why you keep acting like that, Takauji.”

Takauji sighed. “Kanami, if I buy you ice-cream, will you stop being mad at me?”

This had an effect on the girl, equivalent to striking a critical weakness for massive damage on an unsuspecting Shadow. “…what flavor?”

“Peppermint and chocolate chips.”

Kanami contemplated. Then she turned back to Takauji with that serious and unmoving expression. “Ice-cream is unhealthy, especially for archers and boxers such as us. There is too much fat and the sugar is wreak havoc on our careful diets. But…” Her face was now tinged with a hint of red. “If you’re buying it, Takauji, I won’t mind…”

And that is how you spent the rest of the afternoon that day: walking home with Takauji and Kanami while licking a scoop of ice-cream. Kanami had apparently shared the same class with Takauji in elementary school. She had also been determined to keep it that way throughout her entire school life. When Takauji had attended Akumachi-Kirijo, Kanami had followed.

Only to find out they would be separated, which angered Kanami to no end.

“You’re Celeste’s friend, aren’t you?” She said.

“Yeah.” You replied. “You know her?”

“I had to the pleasure of showing her around on her first day.” Kanami looked into the distance. “She’s a good girl.”

“I’ll assume that’s a compliment.”

"It is." She said, giving you a small grin.

For some reason, Kanami kept checking the area around her, as if suspecting an unknown bogeyman would jump out at any moment and wreak havoc on the surrounding areas. Why though? Oh well, another mystery to add to the pile. You were too busy marveling at how delicious the ice-cream was, despite being shoved chockfull of artificial solvents and preservatives.

Then again, wasn’t most food these days?

Powerful weapons and utilities could be crafted from the materials—plasma cannons, laser rifles, power armor, electrolyte-fueled katanas and more. Would Golden Shadows behave the same in the Blackened Void?

One day you would come along to watch, but isn’t wasn’t that day.

Akikazu looked up as you and Celeste approached. “What the hell do you guys want?” he said.

“We want to eat lunch with you.” Celeste replied. “Oh, cup ramen. I’ve been eating that a lot.”

“You’re not about to protest, eh?” You asked. “You said we could do whatever the hell we liked. That’s why we’re here?”

Akikazu slumped down in his spot beneath a tree and groaned. “Do what you want.”

In the end you and Celeste sat next to him and began to eat. Celeste had a couple of bacon sandwiches she prepared herself. You had leftovers as usual—stir-fried eggs, lamb and rice. While you ate, you took out your phone and skimmed through a list of available videos online. One of them caught your fancy—it showed last year’s Under-18s Persona dueling tournament in Akumachi City.

Eriko Ozaki won. This is how she beat her opponent, ripped straight from the last few minutes of the clip.

You looked up to see Akikazu looming over you. “That’s Eriko you’re watching, ain’t it?” he growled.

“The student council president? Yes, why?”

He snorted. “Moron.”

“Excuse me?”

“Not talking to you!” He snarled. “Talking about her. Idiot…always thinking she can shoulder everyone’s burdens by herself…”

With that, he stormed off to find a trash can.

You shrugged. “Ah well, I can tell her later. She’s got tomorrow off, anyway.”

You are, of course, referring to culture clubs. Yes, they still exist! Upon arriving at Tuesday afternoon, you logged on to the school portal and checked the available listings. These were ones on offer at the time…

COOKING: Learn how to craft all sorts of dishes, from brunches to lunches and even desserts in between. Attending this will give you to the ability to practice cooking at home. You may even be selected for tournaments if you do well. Boosts UNDERSTANDING.

Yes, you chose drama. It was an odd choice, considering your introverted and withdrawn nature from before. But for an unknown reason you were speeding headlong into life. Might as well shove another heap of coal into the caboose of the steaming train.

That Tuesday afternoon, you headed down to the back of the school auditorium. Quite a few number of people were gathered there, all of them dressed in school uniforms and clutching scripts. They were standing in pairs and belting out lines to each other at varying degrees of volume. You wandered around the stage for a while before a girl tapped you on the shoulder.

“Are you new here?” She asked, then jabbed her thumbs in the direction behind her. “Talk to guy in the glasses. He’s the club’s captain.”

Said guy in glasses was the only person not dressed in the school uniform. Instead, he was clothed in a slightly altered version of the school uniform which presumably was part of a costume. Also, he was practicing with another girl your age.

“Hatoko, listen to me! It isn’t what you think!”

“I can’t take it anymore! How could you Ta-kun? To think that you would cheat on me with Kurumi-chan…”

“Let me explain myself, please! This is all a big understanding!”

“No! I’ve had enough! We’re through, Tatsuya. You hear me? I don’t want to ever see you again!” Then the girl ran off sobbing…

…only to come back with a composed and natural demeanor. “I think that went pretty well, don’t you think?”

“Exactly my thoughts. You stole them from the tip of my tongue.” The boy in glasses said. “They said we wouldn’t be able to adapt the story onto the stage, but the Akumachi-Kirijo drama club never backs down from a challenge. We’ll prove them wrong, oh yes we will!”

You raised a finger. “Um…hi?”

The drama club whirled around instantly. “Oh, good day to you, dear sir. Are you, perhaps, wishing to become a member of our fine club?”

“Kinda…?”

“Excellent, excellent! This is indeed marvelous!” He shouted, full of pomp and vigor. The boy proceeded to grab your hand and shake it up and down. Dear god, his grip was tight! “Welcome to the world of drama, fellow sir! I just need to grab your name and classroom for the records.”

“Wait.” You blinked. “Just like that?”

“Why, of course! We’re always on the lookout for fresh blood, whether they are a master of the art or a wide-eyed beginner. Your arrival was nicely timed, my friend.” The boy in glasses gives you a radiant thumbs up. “My name is Kaz Inaba, third-year and captain of this wonderful gathering of ladies and gentlemen. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

“Uh, likewise.” You say, a little struck by Kaz’s sheer enthusiasm. It’s like a force of nature, blowing away all your apprehension. “My name is Takashi Wakui. I’m in class 5-3.”

“Alright, I’ll record it down.” He retrieves a smartphone and jots down your information. “And…done! You’re an official member of the drama club.”

“Cool.” You say. “Now what do I do?”

“Why, have your skills tested. What else is there to do?”

“Eh?”

Kaz shoves a couple of pages next to you. They are a script! “Drama is all about acting. And we need to gauge your ability to see if you are villain, a hero, a supporting character or a part of the background. Come now, don’t be shy. I’ll give you a few minutes to read the script. Then I want you to act it with me.”

"Excuse me?"

“Kaz, is it really okay to spend time on this newbie?” The girl from before questions.

“Toss your fears aside!” Kaz boomed. “This is merely my duty as club captain!”

Having no other option, you skimmed the pages. It was an excerpt from a play, concerning the adventures of a hero, his best friend, his harem and a bunch of other dudes. Except for some reason, the hero’s best friend has gone off the deep end and fully embraced the dark side. How this happened you had no fucking idea but it was probably something idiotic and meaningless. The hero’s former best friend had just slaughtered his way through the armies of mankind and was now confronting the boy he once acknowledged as his blood brother.

You were tasked with playing this villain for this brief exchange. Kaz, the captain, was the hero. This would undoubtedly be a poignant and tear-jerking scene, if it weren’t for the fact you had no idea how the story reached this point.

Still, it didn’t hurt to try.

“Alright, let us begin.” Kaz cleared his throat, then put on his act. A pained, exhausted tone emerged from his mouth. You were struck by how passionate and realistic it sounds. Almost as if he was the hero itself, torn between the memories of his best friend and the destructive demon standing before him.

“Kazuya. It’s over. Give yourself up.”
