"No, no, and thrice-curse the feet that brought you to my home, no! Now begone!"

The rude response, if indeed it can be called a response when I haven't even had the chance to knock on the door yet, takes me by surprise so violently, I nearly stumble back down the steps I had only just climbed. Lucky I didn't, the water below is probably full of frogs and leeches!

It's not like I expected a warm welcome from a witch, I'm not quite that naive, but I did not expect this level of hostility. I'll have to try my hardest if I'm going to achieve my goal. Taking a moment to gather my nerves, I begin my carefully prepared speech, even if I didn't plan to give it to a door.

"Wise Lady, I have come to you seeking your Wisdom,-"

"No!"

"Your Power,-"

"Go away!"

"And your Beauty,-"

".."

"In exchange for my servitude as your humble servant."

A loud click almost gives me yet another startle, and then slowly, creaking in the manner that can only be accurately described in stories told by the light of a campfire, the door opens to reveal a small room, lined on all sides by shelf after shelf of various ingredients, the nature of most I could only guess. Little more than a single step inside the room, facing away from me, sits a simple and quite rickety-looking chair facing away from me.

The message is clear, and I do not hesitate to follow. Barely have I sat down befpre the door slams shut behind me, directing my attention to the tall woman behind me. A quick movement of her hands and the door produces the same unmistakable click as before, and she turns to me.

To describe her as "just" a witch would be a great injustice. The woman, towering over me with her great presence, her raven hair flowing freely as she turns, not to mention complementing her dark outfit adorned with black feathers perfectly, all of which seem to carry the purpose of leading the attention to her great... well, let's just say I pray for the sake of my spine I will never be even half the woman she is.

As she looks down to me with hungry eyes, she presents a smile more intimidating than any I have ever seen. My very soul seems to cry out in fear as I realize just how dangerous this venture of mine is.

"Now," her now-calm voice somehow seems even more frightening, "why don't you tell me exactly what you can do for me, little one? And especially remember to stress why you would be more valuable to me as an apprentice than as a toad."

Okay. This is okay, I'm okay. I prepared for this, I can do it. For Papa.

"Kind Lady, my name. " I almost attempt a curtsy before remembering my seated position, instead lowering my head in respect, "is Nadja, and I would make a great apprentice to you because I will serve you unquestioningly, no matter what task you ask!"

In a single elegant motion, the witch's face shifts from a hungry smile to a crooked grin. "So you are a slave, then? I'm afraid that I have no shackles in my home, but I'm sure a set could be procured from the local blacksmith."

"Wha- no no, that's not what I- how would I even work with shackles on!?"

"I never mentioned work."

She winks and laughs to herself, as if telling a joke, though I don't see how that's a joke at all?

"A-a-anyway, the closest blacksmith is my papa! He wouldn't make evil things like that!"

Promptly, her laughter ends. "The blacksmith in the town of Hinde, is that your father?"

Should I not have said that? Maybe witches like orphans better? "Ye-e-es?"

"Andreas Schmidt, that dreamy, handsome hunk of a man, is your father?"

"Uh..."

"That settles it! Apprenticeship accepted, starting tomorrow at dawn!"

That.. that was all it took to convince her in the end? What a strange lady.

"Unfortunately," she begins, "a witch's apprentice cannot be accepted until she has completed the initiation rites, which can only be performed during the Joining, which isn't for another month. Until then, you'll be my servant, you'll call me Misstress, and assist with household duties. For now, you're dismissed!"

The Joining, the yearly event during which the two moons align and rain their blessings and wrath upon the land. It's in two days, I know that.

"Uhm," for just a second more, I ponder whether or not to be bold enough to correct her, "actually the Joining takes place in two days."

Immediately, she serves me a ice cold glare, shivers racing down my spine as I involuntarily twitch about in the chair, but I can't back out now that I've said it.

"I'm very sure that you're mistaken, uhm, Misstress."

For a few moments more she holds the glare, before easing into a soft, and for the first time tonight, kind smile.

>Misstress' opinion has changed to +5

"You've done your research, good. And I can only assume you timed your arrival here deliberately."

I did, but I wasn't intending to admit that before. Nonetheless, she takes my silence as confirmation and laughs so heartily I can't help but smile a little myself.

"We may just make something out of you. And it HAS been a while since I had an apprentice last more than a week. Do try to keep it up, little one."

"Now, since the Joining is indeed in just two days, we will have to prepare you tomorrow. For now, you should return home before the dark falls. It wouldn't do for my new apprentice to be eaten on her first day."

She's right, it took me a long time to find her home in the woods. Hopefully, I can make better time on the return trip. I rise from my seat, and strike my best curtsy.

"Thank you, Misstress, and good evening."

She nods and simply waves me away. I take the message and hurry out the door, already having made my way down the steps before remembering that the door was supposed to be locked. A trick, or some kind of magic?

Outside, the sky above me is already turning red and the birds falling silent. Mixed with the stench of half-decayed plants and no doubt slimy animals in the bog she decided to build her home by, the whole atmosphere leaves me quite unnerved. All the more reason to hurry home.

Fortunately, it turns out that now I know the way I can make the distance in good time before the sun can fully set, and before dinnertimer too. That means I have time to take a quick detour before heading home.

Normally, Amalia would be my first choice. She's my age and we've always been good friends. Sadly, she's out of town accompanying her father on a business trip to the Imperial Capital.

Instead, I could go visit Kerstin and Klemens, the son and daughter of the priest in Hinde. Klemens is only a year older than me, but at 16 Kerstin is almost an adult. She's very smart though and always gives me good advice.

I could also could look for big sis and walk home with her. She's big and strong and brave so she's usually at the barracks trying to train the soldiers.

Or I could just head right home. Obviously I can't tell Papa what I'm planning, but I can ask him about his day or maybe help with dinner.

I really don't know whose bright idea it was, but Hinde is a very... vertical town. Papa says it's something about being right by the safest passage into the mountain region to the south, so travelers from the Empire, the Western kingdoms, and from down south pass by here and that's good business. Strange people do pass through here, alright, but I'm just not sure it's a price worth paying for all these stupid stairs.

The barracks sits on one of the highest points in the town, just in front of the town hall. Officially, this is so that the guards can keep a watch on the entire town, but big sis says it's really just so they can make the rookies run from the top to the bottom and back again all the time.

At this time of day, only two guards are actually left in the yard to greet me, Klaus and Klarissa. Although I sometimes joke about it, they are not actually brother and sister like Kerstin and Klemens are. Klaus always seems amused by the notion, but Klarissa will usually just go silent and leave. I don't think I want her to do that today, so I'll have to save it for another day.

Klarissa is first to notice my arrival abd greets me a little more loudly than necessary, as she tends to do.

"Nadja! Have you finally decided to become a real woman like your sister and train with us?"

Some things never change.

"I'm only twelve, Klarissa."

She slams her armored chest with a clank just barely as loud as her voice. "Never too late to get started!"

Klaus decides to interrupt his training and lays a hand on her shoulder, smiling gently at me.

"Let the girl choose her own life, Klarissa. What good is a soldier with nobody in need of protection, anyway?"

Klarissa only sighs, before returning to her training, leaving me alone with Klaus.

"So what can I help you with, Nadja?"

"I came looking for my sister. Isn't she here?"

He scratches the back of his neck awkwardly, searching for words.

"Well... How to put this... We got a report of a dragon terrorizing the village of Nihe. Naturally, she rushed off without a word. You know how it is."

"Oh... I see."

Yet another adventure. I suppose it's the way it has to be. Someone has to be the big hero who saves the world, and that someone turned out to be my sister. I'll just have to wait until she comes home again. And tell Papa...

"Thanks you, Klaus, and good night."

"You too, Nadja."

The walk home is mercifully shorter, Papa's shop being near the center of town, so as many travelers as possible will see it, he says. At this time, he has already stopped working for the day and started on dinner.

"Ah, Nadja!" He calls out as I enter, "Dinner is almost ready, be a dear and fetch your sister, will you?"

I wish she'd just take a moment to tell him before rushing off instead of letting me do it.

"I already went to the barracks,-"

His shoulders slump, anticipating the news

>"She left to go fight a dragon"
>"She left to go on an adventure"

AND

It really is a terrible title, although to be fair, Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu isn't much better either. At least the localized title makes it clear they're not magical girls.

Fantastic anime though, easily one of my favourites and I need to rewatch it one of these days, I'm not entirely sure if it would fit what that anon is looking for though.

"She left to go fight a dragon."

Papa spins on the spot, a tense look on his eyes and his arms shaking violently.

"A WHAT? DID YOU JUST SAY A DRAGO-"

"I'll go set the table," I blurt before hurrying out of the kitchen. Behind me, papa slams the door shut behind me, thankfully rendering the subsequent barrage of shouts unintelligble. Poor Papa.

Judging by the scent, the dish he's preparing is fish-based, so I grab two sets of plates, forks, knives, and glasses out of the cupboard and arrange each at one side of the table. Papa doesn't like us sitting at each end, he says it's very asocial.

By the time I'm done he has calmed down a bit, but it's usually better to let him decide when he's cooled down. Not that he would ever hit us or anything, but a thorough shouting isn't very fun either. Instead, I decide to watch the setting sun through the window, casting it's red light over the sky as silhouettes of the last stragglers heading home for dinner pass by.

Only a few moments later Papa emerges from the kitchen, a platter covered with filets of a fish I know I should remember the name of, rice, peas, and cream sauce. It looks much more sophisticated than anything I could make yet.

The first minutes of dinner pass in uncomfortable silence, before I finally decide enough is enough.

"Did you have a nice day, Papa?"

He takes a few moments to answer, considering his answer.

"Yet another slow day, I'm afraid. But don't worry, thing will turn around."

I can't help letting out an annoyed hmph. He always says that. That's exactly why I need the witch's help, what else could I do to help papa? I don't know how he does it but the other smith in town, Appleton, keeps taking all the customers, even though he charges more and his products are much worse than Papa's. All the stupid adventurers and travelers buy them and I don't understand why!

1/2
>>
>>42311534
But maybe magic can help Papa. He tried to teach me, but I just can't understand his craft at all, so I can't help that way. I just have to make sure he doesn't find out, he would be very angry if I did anything... sneaky, and yell about "honor of the craft" and such.

And again, awkward silence falls on the room.

>"Are you going to yell at big sis when she comes home?"
>Offer to take care of the dishes alone so he can go relax.
>Ask to be excused and head to bed early.

I stand up and begin to collect the plates, to Papa's protestations.

"Leave it, Nadja, I'll ta-"

"No," I bite a little more harshly than intended, "please allow me, Papa. I want you to take it easy tonight."

"That's really not necessary," he stands up, "just let me-"

"No!" Surprise washes over his face as we lock eyes, and I make sure to give him my sternest look to show that I'm serious.

Surprise eventually melts into a calm I haven't seen for weeks now, and he sits back down, contented.

"You really have your mother's eyes."

I never knew Mama. Papa mentions her sometimes, but doesn't want to talk about what happened to her. I glance back at him before exiting the room.

"Is that good?"

He doesn't answer.

I make quick work of the dishes, and the evening ends with little more than an exchange of "good night"

-

In the morning, I make sure to rise early, the sun only barely begining to make its mark on the sky. Papa's snoring still rumbles through the house and I quietly prepare a few slices of yesterday's leftover bread, taking one for myself and leaving the rest for Papa, grab an apple for the road and head out into the streets.

The town is probably at its prettiest now, bright enough to not be night, morning mist floating gently over the cobblestones, and wonderfully quiet since everyone is still asleep. Everybody but the birds, me, and...

Huh.

Over by the ledge in front of the house on the far side of this level of the town, some boy I've never seen in town. He's just sitting there, staring at the forest below town. And his clothes and his hair are really strange, even for the travelers that pass through here.

>No time to worry about that, I need to be at Mistress' home at dawn.

Part of me really wants to get to the bottom of this mystery, but I simply don't have the time. I need to be at Mistress' home at dawn, and it's still a long walk there. The thought doesn't leave my mind however, and all the way down the steps through town I have the nagging feeling as if the boy is watching me from above. Finally at the bottom, I spin on the spot to glance back up but he's gone.

I probably imagined it, maybe I even imagined the boy. What real person would wear such ridiculous clothes, after all? I shake the thought and continue on, finishing the rest of my apple while maintaining a brisk pace on the uneventful trip.

I arrive to find the hut already brimming with activity as smoke erupts in steady streams from the chimney as well as an open window.

Despite the apparent activity, nobody yells at me as I step up to the door. In fact, nobody even responds as I knock on the door either. I try to pull on the door, but it's locked. Maybe she's asleep? But if she's asleep, what's with the smoke?

1/2
>>
>>42313369
Deciding something isn't right, I crawl across the narrow ledge above the bog and over to the open window on the side of the far side of the house, slowly as I remind myself the slimy animals probably haven't gotten any less slimy.

Finally arriving at the window, fumes still flowing freely from within, I raise myself up to peek inside. What greets me is not a welcome sight. Sprawled across the floor just beneath the window is Mistress, seemling passed out on the spot. In the right side of the room, I can just barely see the outline of a great cauldron, the apparent source of the fumes. Definitely not good!

I quickly climb inside, of course, but... what do I in a situation like this? I haven't learned anything about witch things yet!

That was obvious purley based on who's running it.
>>
>>42314075
Again?
Why can't people just write failure to accomplish something instead of bullshiting?
I could understand barely any possibility of failure if players regularly rolled 90+ but otherwise it's just silly to play easy mode

>Witch Apprentice Quest
>HURR WE NEED MORE LETHALITY DURR
Are you even familiar with the genre going in this quest?
>>
>>42314203
The problem is that lack of failure is not a positive thing in nearly any quest
And SoL is not one of genres where it's good
>>
>>42314181
I think the point trying to be made there is that rolls aren't going to be used to determine whether or not the thing we voted for happens, but rather to determine the way in which that thing happens/whether or not there are unexpected hurdles in the way.
>>
>>42314231
>Lethality
>The same as failure
>>
>>42314269
>Light-hearted quest
>Still pushing failure based on random rolls
I really don't feel like arguing with you, this game is too good to argue
>>
>>42314257
There's potential for failure unless the writer isn't willing. And that's fine. No one wants to force a writer to write something they don't want to write, right?
>>
Is this quest animeweebshit?
>>
>>42314326
But anon
Light hearted quests are ones where random failure can have best consequences
Unless you are talking about quests where players somehow become best friends with everyone on first meeting and never anything goes wrong
>>
>>42314411
Failure can be very cute and the QM is well aware of this. Read their earlier quests.
>>
>>42314411
Let's put it this way - OP already stated how things are going.
You don't like that?
Don't play, as simple as that

Whatever these fumes are, they're clearly what made her pass out. I remember in Sunday School, Klemens once said that in a fire situation, you should stay low because the smokes rise up into the air, so I drop down next to Mistress to try to wake her. No matter how hard I shake her, she doesn't respond, though she's definitely still alive.

I see no safe alternative, so it looks like I'll just have to drag her out of here, hopefully without passing out from the fumes myself.

Carrying her is definitely out of the question, so instead I grab hold of her arm with both of mine, pull, and... fall flat on my face.

Argh, stupid, Mistress! Nobody needs to be THAT big!

Right, try again, this time putting all of my weight into it. It means standing back up and exposing myself to even more of the fumes, but I can't just leave her here.

Fortunately, with all of my strength available I begin to actually make some progress. I'm sure this treatment of being dragged along the floor is doing nothing good to her outfit, not to mention the bonk her head made when I dragged her down the step from what I assume she would call her lab and into the front room I already encountered once.

The fog is thinner in here, and I feel my breaths coming much easier. Behind me, Mistress is still out cold, though her face bears the distinct marks of the short journey. In retrospect, maybe I should have turned face up first.

Oh well.

I set back to dragging her heavy body across the room, when she begins stirring, grumbling something or other. I ignore it at first, until suddenly she grabs me by the leg and force fully drags me down to the floor.

What came next would catch me completely off guard, as the woman leaps unto me, embracing me forcefully.

"My sweet Camille, you finally came to visit your mama~"

"Wha Mistress, please let go of me, we have to get out of here!"

"Heehee, silly girl, I'm your mama, you don't call me that~"

We didn't clean the workshop, while there was apparently plenty of time before the dinner.
We didn't interact with the boy, while again, there was plenty of time.

We somehow turned something that was close enough to respectable witch into insane person with grief or memory issues

So, this turned out better than I expected. I hope you all enjoyed this first thread as much as I did. I am hoping to run the next thread tomorrow, if nothing goes wrong between now and then (and I absolutely do no guarantee that nothing will go wrong). If it is tomorrow, it'll be around the same time.

If it's not tomorrow, I have a twitter @FriendQM that you can follow to please my fragile ego where I always try to keep you updated on when the next thread will be.

>>42314735
Absolutely none. Unlike my previous quest, I don't have any end state in mind, so I'm just gonna try to have fun and hopefully that'll be more fun for you too!

Witch quests are popular for some reason
Sadly it's pretty much never quest about any of these fun ones

Thanks for running! Did you get inspiration for this quest from any place or is it an original creation?
>>
>>42314808
Thanks for running.
>>
>>42314873
I threw a bunch of things I like on a metaphorical table and tried to glue them together. None of those things are original, but I guess the metaphorical glue is?

Like, I've basically loved the idea of the life a witch apprentice specifically since Maple and Syrup (LoZ: Oracle of Ages/Seasons), but neither Nadja or Mistress are really anything like their counterparts. Does that make it an original thought, or just me trying to justify making a thing I like?

Or another example, the setting is technically homemade, but it just started with "I want magic to work this particular way" and then I needed a setting to justify magic working the way I wanted it. So it's kinda original, but it's also just looking at other things and putting them together in the way I want.

So uh anyway, short answer, I got inspiration for lots of things from lots of things, not any one thing in particular.

It's an original setting then. Inspiration is bound to happen to some extent for everyone that doesn't live in a figurative vacuum.

Anyway, good job on the first thread!

Oh, and as for dice and failure, I hope this ending showed you what I clearly failed to express clearly. In this case, the direct effects of the low roll are that, a) Mistress' face has gotten beat up and she may not be entirely happy about that and, b) had you been faster, this next scene might have never taken place and you wouldn't have this chance to learn about Mistress. On the other hand, a more successful act of heroism would probably result in a more appreciative Mistress!

One or the other may be more favorable, but I think they're different enough to warrant a roll.

>>42315321
I loved LiK too, but I must assure you that Nadja is 100% human.
