Quest Start

You are Mikage Chiba, 2nd year highschool student, formerly you were the magical champion of love and justice known as Sailor Moon. Needless to say, your life is a complicated mess because of this. A traumatic experience forced you to pass the mantle of Sailor Moon to your younger sister, and you withdrew from your life and family.

Recent events have brought you out of hiding and had you face your traumas and other lingering issues in your life. Among them, your relationship with your older sister. The sum of that relationship is that you resented her after you learned that she was you from an alternate future, she changed history a long time ago by coming back in time to when your mother was Sailor Moon. There were many problems when you learned this, chief among them a misunderstanding resulting from the two of you sharing dreams.

Now, while you have been secretly helping your younger sister face a new group of enemies who threaten the world and have ties to a destroyed civilization from before the current fossil record, you and your older sister have made your peace. Admitting those feelings and actually talking about them allowed you to accept her, and accept that her being here.

However certain circumstances, which you blame yourself for, have made her ability to exist in this time period unstable. She needs to recover in her own time.

Now, it appears you are attending the farewell party arranged by your younger sister, her friends, and the friends of your older sister.
>>
>>42326722

This party is being held in some kind of underground or extradimensional room somehow attached to the Crowne Arcade. Its mostly white and shiny, a strange yet welcomingly comfortable mix between a karaoke lounge and a ready room. You gained access to this space with magical key cards labeled with your cat’s face which opened a magical portal instead of the doors to the Arcade’s Karaoke booths.

While almost everyone else has been excitedly talking after your big sister’s arrival, you’ve been quiet and off to the side. Stewing in your guilt.

Just as well, everyone in here besides you and a talking cat from the future is a Magical Guardian. They don’t need you bringing the mood down.

~Besides me,~ you murmur to no one while stealing a glance at the white star shaped locket broach hanging from your neck.

“Is everything alright, Mikage?” your company on the couch inquires.

You have been playing the wallflower during the wait for the guest of honor’s arrival sitting on a couch off to the side alongside Aiha Mizuno, Sailor Mercury. During her awakening as a guardian, you learned that the two of you had been online friends for quite some time, though that involves a whole other matter of double identities.

The blue haired girl looks over to you with concern while your elder sister, Usa, fends off everyone crowding her at once. Well, not everyone. Kanari Kino, Sailor Jupiter, is hanging back by the snack table trying to play herself off as disinterested and cool. Rin Kumada, Sailor Mars, is walking over to you and Aiha with two cups of punch.

~Not really, this is all my fault,~ you grouse.

“Mikage, don’t say that,” Aiha says as she puts a hand on your shoulder.

~Why shouldn’t I? Usa has to pay the price for my stupid mistake,~ you clench your fists in your lap, ~Messing with magic I didn’t understand,~

Aiha is quiet, she exudes that awkward nervousness that seems to be her default state. She starts and stops in forming a response to that twice before Rin finishes her journey to the two of you on the couch. One of the cups of punch finds its way into Aiha’s hand. The shorter and black haired girl turns to you and takes a casual sip as you glance up to her and look away.

“You had no way of knowing,” she shrugs before gesturing in request for you to scoot over a bit.

Complying, she sits down between you and Aiha. You imagine she was close enough to hear the conversation on her approach, or she knew this conversation would happen. Sometimes, its hard to know how she may know something sometimes.

“And the price was split, you still went berserk and them wound up comatose,” she shrugs and holds her cup up while you groan at remembering that, “I’m flying mostly blind on a few things right now without my mom around to help me with my fire readings, we’ll all make mistakes with the unknown,”

“Is it hard taking care of the shrine with just you and your dad?” Aiha asks Rin.

“Actually it's been nice working with my dad, he said he really missed being there” she smiles at the blue haired girl before turning back to you, “Doesn’t look like she blames you?”

Stealing a glance back over to the mob, everyone is starting to disperse but stick close to Usa as she’s making her way over toward the three of you.

You take Rin’s advice to heart, you know for a fact that your big sister doesn’t blame you for what happened at the tower. Maybe you shouldn’t harp on it, and so you’ll try not to. Still, you’ve monopolized a lot of Usa’s time at home so you’ll hang back while she gets to know the girls and catch up with her friends.

Besides, the idea of spending time around and being emotional about Usa around everyone is a touch off putting.

Excusing yourself from the couch before the distance is closed, you cut a direct line to the table setup with snacks. Among the snacks laid out on the table are some more of the cookies you and mom made. Seriously, how long will those batches of cookies last? Snagging one from among the familiar confections, you slowly enjoy it and ladle yourself a cup of punch.

~Hey,~ you offer to the younger girl clad in green hovering near the snack table.

Kanari Kino, your little sister’s best friend, holds you in this weird place between contempt and respect. The two of you wound up in a bit of a conflict when she was first awakening to her powers as Sailor Jupiter. As you’ve been able to piecemeal the matter together, she is disappointed in you for being too afraid to take action and assumedly too ashamed to fight alongside them.

If only she knew.

“Hey,” she nods back, and then after a quiet moment, ”So, what was all that with that guy?”

Right. That little light hearted stunt you pulled with Yoshi, a classmate and an old flame who you’re still sorting out your feelings for, to talk about some things away from your baby sister’s ears and make her think something romantic or lovey dubby had happened.

By some miracle, despite her shock at the visual tableau your actions painted, Koyomi never really questioned you. Yet now, Kanari is.

OH COME ON!

~Yoshi? He’s just an old friend,~ you wave off her concern dismissively as you take another sip of the sweet red punch, ~I was teasing him, I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone to reconnect with people,~

Before stepping into this room, you used your burgeoning psionic abilities to gird your mind against interrogation. That power passively allows you to present a front that Kanari doesn’t question.

“That’s good,” the athletic girl smiles broadly before narrowing her eyes, “So, you’re starting to act like your old self. Does this mean after you run this whole Red Eyes ruse to get intel on the enemy you’re going to start running with us openly?”

~Are you still on that?~ you laugh nervously.

“Why wouldn’t I be,” she shrugs and grabs a cookie before looking up into your eyes haughtily, “Though I can still be happy you’re taking our little chat to heart,”

Her reference to her rough verbal treatment of yourself after the incident at Tokyo Tower hangs in the air between you hangs for a moment as she backs down from her attempted staredown and slowly takes a bite of the cookie. Brushing past you, she heads toward the couch and the dispersing congress of sailor guardians.

Looking past her, you notice that your older sister has taken a spot on the couch. Just because she’s recovered enough to fall through a portal in time doesn’t mean she’s fully recovered from these bouts of weakness.

Meanwhile Koyomi is busy dragging Aiha over to the elaborate tactical computer that apparently doubles as a karaoke machine. No doubt to set a song list while to get this party into full swing. Keiko is making her way over slowly behind them, no doubt she wants to show off her likely impressive singing talent.

Honestly you don’t know if she’s any good or not. You think she’s done a few musicals, so maybe? This train of thought it cut short as bounding toward you is the ever energetic and adorable Venus Aino. Taking another drag of your punch, you don’t flee at her approach.

“PB-chan! Why didn’t you tell me SB-chan was from such a cool place!” the small child in a long blonde wig vibrates as she skids to a stop in front of you.

You guess no one really told her about Crystal Tokyo before. She seems far more energetic today than even when you first met her which could be a side effect of the tactical magical healing nuke you dropped on her in a panic when you witnessed one of her seizures.

Wait a second. What the hell is SB an acronym for? This kid and her nicknames, come to think of it she seems to enjoy explaining them more than just giving them.

~SB-chan?~ you question the latest nickname added to her parade of colorfully applied nomenclature as you kneel down to her level, ~Why is Usa-neesan’s nickname SB-chan? Sister Bunny? Smart Bunny? Wait, it isn’t Sexy Bunny, is it? You’re too young for such things, Venus-chan,~

The effervescent child shakes her head with in negative.

“No,” she says with a perfectly happy smile.

It reminds you for a moment of your own tendency toward the cultural taboo of outright using the word; then again it's quite different than your usual usage. There are plenty of other negative statements she could use, but she went with the most succinct one. Probably because of all the time she’s spent living in America.

~Then what’s SB-chan short for?~

“Fufufufu,” she chuckles to herself and then speaks in a tone to express that she’s doing you a favor, “Well, I already explained it to the others, but I guess its fine to explain it again,”

This is immediately undercut by the broad and sparkling shine in her eyes, she revels in explaining her nicknames.

“You since there are two pink bunnies, I had to pick something to differentiate them,” she explains while pantomiming horns on her head, “And your big sis has her buns with those pink cones. Despite actually being red, pink is a color often associated with strawberries. Since there were pink cones, I dubbed her Strawberry Bunny Chan,”

Quite pleased with herself, she crosses her arms happily across her chest which is puffed out in pride at her cleverness.
>>
>>42333478

~Well then that’s a pretty good nickname, Venus-chan,~ you smile and offer the younger girl a headpat.

You take a breath as you withdraw your hand and glance over to the others. The Asteriod Senshi are mostly chatting with the other girls and showing off their more magically powered transformation wands. while your sister laughs at the whole affair. Koyomi and Keiko are over by the console, having Aiha bring up the available karaoke list.

Its as unobserved as you’re going to be, so you’ll ask subtlely.

~Say, Venus-chan,~ you as quietly as you shift your glance to her forehead, ~how is everything?~

Her mood doesn’t change, at least as far as body language is concerned, but her tone shifts.

“I had a few tests done to take a peek inside,” she says, “and I’ll be consulting with an oncologist to go over the results. Also I switched up my primary care back to your mom’s old practice with Tomoe-san,”

She sighs and uncrosses her arms.

“I’ll be fine, PB-chan,” she says with a smile, “Now lets just enjoy the party,”

With that she turns away to begin investigating the vanity makeup table labeled for her.

While you could keep snacking, you’ve had more than your share of food thanks to the late lunch you were forced to take. Instead you think you’ll be sociable with the people you don’t know very well here, specifically the Asteroid Senshi.

During Usa’s tenure of Sailor Moon, when you were very young, they were her team and friends. Apparently they didn’t have normal childhoods, and even years later they had trouble adapting to life even though they’d gone through junior high and highschool proper with her.

Now, you don’t actually know what they do with themselves. Usa’s been attending college in the UK at a relaxed pace, but honestly you lost track of them when you stopped paying attention to your big sister. Drifting away from the snack table you take notice of the blue haired girl with weighted braids hanging from around her head, squealing in glee while inspecting one of the vanity stations and pressing buttons excitedly and at random revealing makeup trays, first aid supplies, and assorted other things you don’t think have a place in a vanity.

“This is so cool,” she squeaks as you walk up to her and clear your throat.

~Uh, hey,~ you say a touch awkwardly, ~Palla-san,~
>>
>>42336113

She wheels around and looks you up and down before smiling.

“Oh wow, little Mikage-chan! You’ve gotten so big!” she beams and snatches your hands forward, “PallaPalla would have said so earlier but it didn’t look like you were in a mood to talk!”

She still refers to herself in the third person. She’s a grown woman who is older than your sister, yet she speaks with the tense and cadence of a child. More than that, you recall that she is her team’s resident magic expert and as Sailor Pallas she is sailor guardian of civilization and wisdom.

“Yet here you are, talking to PallaPalla!” she giggles and bounces on the balls of her feet.

Guardian of wisdom.

~So, Palla-san, what have you been up to since...well,~ you stop for a moment to mentally reach as she lets go of your hands and slides her own hands behind her back before rocking slowly back and forth, ~since we- well we never spoke much when I was a kid,~

She giggles and leans in close.

“Yeah, you really seemed to hate PallaPalla and the rest of us after you overheard us and your sister that night,” her perennial smile shifts into a momentary frown, “Life can be full of those kind of sad circumstances, but PallaPalla never lets them get her down! And now you can become friends with all of us!”

You absentmindedly wonder just how many times she could say her own name in a single sentence.

~Well, to get that started,~ you say a touch more comfortably, ~What have you been up to since then?~

She brings a finger to her lips and looks up in thought for a moment while a hum reverberates passed closed lips. With a snap of her finger, her eyes fall back down to meet yours.

“That would have been near the end of highschool,” she explains, “PallaPalla graduated and went to Todai for and double majored in Anthropology and Civil Engineering!”

It catches you off guard, the bubbly and seemingly vapid girl’s exclamation about the skills she acquired. The University of Tokyo, she really studied there? And pursued two degrees?

~That’s really impressive,~ you say calmly, relying on the mask provided by the barriers of mental protection to not insult her by your reaction.

“Then afterwards PallaPalla finished her Masters and became a field researcher for the Tomoe Institute,” her smile broadens, “Its great fun and I’m able to travel the world. Though PallaPalla and the girls took a long break together to tour with a few big circuses. Gotta keep our acrobatics polished!”
>>
>>42337525

~That’s really impressive,~ while Palla-san being possessed of a Sailor Guardian pedigree probably helped her secure her position, her mundane areas of study were probably really impressive to Tomoe-sensei, ~Why’d you study those things? I can see how anthropology fits into your magical expertise, but why’d you study civil engineering?~

She immediately blushes in embarrassment and rubs the back of her head while looking away. I couldn’t just be that she was the Guardian of Wisdom and Civilization?

“Oh, just something silly,” she tries to play off her embarrassment as unimportant, but you see through her rather easily.

While she probably highly intelligent and experienced, she wears her heart on her sleeve and wreathed in pointing neon lights and underscored by a ticker dot matrix.

That blatant telegraphing of her embarrassment doesn’t quite sit well with you. You must know why she pursued Civil Engineering of all things, and why she is so embarrassed about it. However, you’ll do it politely.

~Come on,~ you say in a friendly tone, ~Even if we don’t know each other very well, we’re all friends here. You can tell me Palla-san,~

After a moment of indecision, in which she glances to her neon colored teammates and your older sister, she looks at you and nods.

“Ever since you were born,” she begins a bit sadly, “We knew Usa-chan’s future wouldn’t happen. Crystal Tokyo as she had told us wouldn’t happen,”

She pauses, her previously indomitable levels of energy hitting a low.

“Its something PallaPalla decided before you stopped wanting to have anything to do with us and still wishes to accomplish,” she meets your eyes with a certain resolve, “You wouldn’t have the Crystal Tokyo. PallaPalla is going to build you your own city,”

Her quiet declaration catches you off guard as a rising music echoes from the lounge’s stage. A pop orchestra starts out slowly and then kicks into forward momentum as Keiko-chan sings.

You’re caught up in Palla-sans words that you barely notice the opening verse, but awareness returns to you as Keiko belts the speedier chorus. Declaring survival, she can’t stop wanting to live, and that eyes met guided by the constellations

Everyone seems to be enjoying the sudden song, it is a party after all.

Rebuilding the Moon ruins doesn't feel right, at least not as our main place, need more connection to the Earth.

Antarctica is one of the few places someone could claim a chunk of without seriously stepping on toes.

Which also reminds me about Point D. That place was hugenormous. Had vast openings and separate large buildings and everything.
Certainly some potential for remodeling there.

Hrm. Previously, I have wondered if Juuban might be the ancient site of the seat of Elysium, though now I also wonder if what we know as Point D was once part of the kingdom.
We do still need to ask the Shintennou and Helios about that.

I didn't want to like PallaPalla since she's in big sisters court and all but wow.

Not so much her court as serving as her guardian quartet. Though it sounds like Usa's Crystal Tokyo court is kinda lonely for her.
>>
>>42349597
As of yet, they have not encountered the Amazoness Quartet in the Crystal Tokyo timeline. Though not for lack of trying.
>>
>>42349677
No Quartet, no Helios, I don't think I've heard of the Outer sensi being around other than Pluto (who kinda has her own way past long stretches of oliterated civilization), and likely not a new generation either with the different circumstances, increased responsibilities, and loss of life- at least not as we knew them. And the rest of the universe being dead, and the looming specter of those that killed it still out there hopefully very far away after thousands of years.
Crystal Tokyo is shining and happy, but there are some very sad and scary things about that timeline.

Comedic aside

With Aiha-chan working the controls, you skip away from the console as Sugimoto-san takes the lounge’s stage. You have a secret, private, karaoke lounge underneath the Crowne Arcade and it's super cool!

Your name is Koyomi Chiba, and you need to drag your best friend into doing a duet with you. Finding your bestest bestie in the whole wide world in the general vicinity of the lounge’s couch, you grab her wrist and pull with all your might.

“Kanari-chan! Let’s sing something together!,” you cheer and lean away as the other girl barely budges from the pull of your weight.

“Fine,” she smiles and finally steps into your pull, “but I’m not following Sugimoto-san or Venus-chan,”

“What? But I wanted to go next!?” you call over the din of the music.

Kanari Kino sighs and then offers a relaxed chuckle. She pauses and then glances around before leaning in toward you conspiratorially.

“I asked your sister about that guy earlier,” she whispers to you as softly as she can while still being heard over the music, you lean in to join in on the secretive communique.

“What did she say? I knew she’d just brush me off if I tried to ask her anything,” you ask her in sudden anxious need to know just what your sister was up to with Yoshi Sakurada.

“Said she was reconnecting with an old friend,” your bestie explains with a sigh, “and that she was teasing him about something and I’m kind of inclined to believe her,”

“What? Really? I could have sworn there was something more there,” you whimper dejected, “Sakurada-san came just as often as that brat to visit her in the hospital. I thought something was up when he left upset after she woke up,”

“Sakurada-san?” your friend questions before developing a sly grin on her face and glancing back over to your big sister where she’s talking with Palla-san, “So, would Yoshi be a nickname or a first name,”
>>
>>42356340

“Huh? First name? Why is that important Kanari-chan,”

She’s quiet for a moment before she offers a quiet laugh to something playing out in her own mind before she mutters something in Portuguese that you don’t understand. Her attention back on you, her hands raise up and hold your shoulders.

“Koyomi-chan, I take back what I said about your sister,” she smiles broadly.

“Eh?”

“Do you know how they know each other?” she asks you evenly.

“Well, Sakurada-san used to help her with math and science. They’d been in the same class for a while so they would meet at our house or at his place sometimes. Mom said to give them space, ‘unless they turned out to be too dense for their own good’,” you explain and recite your mother’s oddly specific wisdom from memory before sighing sadly, “But then, she graduated junior high and…”

A moment passes as Sugimoto-san reaches the second chorus of the song she’s singing. Kanari-chan glances over at your older sister who isn’t a time traveler and nods with a certain resolve.

“She’s way more like you than she lets on,” a mischievous glint takes her eyes, “And I think that when she isn’t working her little spy mission, we should have our own spy mission with her as the target,”

“What?” you sputter, “How is she more like me?”

“Koyomi-chan,” she sighs, “How many guys did you gush to me about having a crush on in the past two months,”

You curl into a defensive posture, though still conspiratorially close. You like that word, conspiratorial. Being a Sailor Guardian is a conspiratorial act.

“I don’t know,” you explain through crossed arms as your best friend takes a neutral and expectant expression, “and besides I have an actual date with your brother on Friday. My past passing interests should have no impact on current proceedings,”

“That’s not what I’m getting at,” she huffs, “I’m saying that I think she likes two guys, two guys like her, and she’s either too brain dead like you sometimes get or too out of practice to make a decision to pursue or back off,”

“EEEE!” you squeal in realization as your eyes brighten, “That means the pipsqueak and Sakurada-san will be competing for nee-san’s attention. As Sailor Guardians of Love and Justice it's our duty, nay, our privilege to help out,”

What could go wrong?

Wait, HEY!

"Kanari-chan, don't be mean!" you whine over the coursing music as you thrust your arms out to the side, "I'm not brain dead and don't say I'm a klutz either!"

Your suddenly extending arm neatly crashes into the plastic cup your friend and ally Rin Kumada was carrying. The contents spill haphazardly across the blouse of her school uniform.

Interlude: Waiting at the Gates

Footsteps echo through the room with no walls. In the center of this room, so designated by the arrangement of inlaid patterns in the white, is an ornate archway and door. Three souls stand before it, though only two with any sense of calm.

A woman with long and green hair with a red jewel topped staff in her grasp holds with a vigilant quiet, eyes toward the freestanding and closed portal. Dressed in an elegant white dining jacket is a man with silver hair and quiet eyes, he waits patiently stealing glances at the third person in the room.

The ribbons of a bow tied around the back of her slim white gown extend out behind her in the shape of a butterfly’s wings. Her golden hair trails behind her in twin buns and tails that whip and bounce at worried her movement. Hands wrung together, the pained intensity of her pacing threatens to wear a groove into the likely nigh impermeable floor.

Behind them is a less ornate, but still ostentatious, frame and door perhaps half the size as the one in the center of the room, the smooth surface beneath it all reaches out beyond this freestanding frame and further out in all directions. The marble white floor in fact extends into the hazy distance shrouded by the mists of time, itself uncertain the further from the central gateway one travels in this place.

“She should be here by now,” the woman in white worries in a focus of maternal concern, “Something may have gone wrong. Setsuna, open the gate and-”

She passes by the man in white, whose outstretched gloved hand lands gently upon her shoulder.

“Usako, don’t worry so much,” he smiles softly, “We’re just a bit early, isn’t that right Setsuna?”

“Time is relative, Neo Queen Serenity,” the woman in green turns from her vigil to face her King and Queen, “King Endymion has the right of it. The exact moment of her arrival remains unclear, she might arrive several minutes before her departure or after,”
>>
>>42361086

This calms the queen, somewhat, as her posture and breathing steady. One of her hands rises to the King’s hand on her shoulder. With a steady voice and a sterner demeanor, she directs her attention back to the guardian before her.

“Setsuna,” she asks softly, “In relative time, has my daughter left yet?”

Nodding in response, the guardian of time extends her the garnet topped rod toward the gates. They shift, slightly, creaking of hinges meant to carry and swing the weight of all that has passed and all that will be. Withdrawing her tool of office, the Sailor Guardian of time regards her liege with a cool and dispassionate voice.

“The pathway through the Cherry Road has not yet been opened, and their Gate of Time remains firmly shut,” she explains, “The power of Chronos has not yet been called upon, but I feel the rippling pressure of its use ahead of us. Please be patient my Queen,”

The woman in white nods, in understanding, but then pouts.

“I want her home,” she sighs, “And I wish I could give her the things she needs to stay,”

Approaching the gate of time directly, she lays a bare hand upon the portal and stares at it wistfully.

“Even with Diana, she’s so lonely here,” she laments, “We’ve tried but we can’t find her friends and-,”

She pauses.

Her hand is withdrawn from the gate and it drops to her side, in mirror to her other hand they tighten in frustration before she relaxes her grip and her shoulders.

“I sometimes see the point of that rebellion’s position,” the queen says solemnly while still facing the door, “before Death Phantom manipulated them into wholesale slaughter. The long life granted to our world may seem unnatural, but it is still life. Immortality, however, has been both a wondrous opportunity and a terrible burden,”

“Usako,” King Endymion whispers softly.
>>
>>42361111

“She’s so lonely here,” Neo Queen Serenity repeats in sadness, “And because I am unchanging, forever as I am to protect our world, I cannot grant her a sister,”

Silence reigns in the room. A subtle tremor passes through it’s guardian’s tool of office, pulling her eyes briefly away from the saddened queen.

“It’s our burden,” she says with a bit more confidence before turning to her husband with a sad smile on her face, “And I can regret it all I want to, Mamo-chan, but I made my choice for the sake of as many as we could save. For that I won’t have any regrets,”

A look of guilt plays across the face of the guardian of time. Her olive skin contorting in a moment of discomfort as an old exchange echoes in the back of her mind. The tremor in her tool of office forgotten, she remembers a time when she told the woman before her that she cannot fight what was to come. That the near and total destruction of the earth and its people would come to pass unless she waited to act until after it had started.

Of course, she wouldn’t listen. She had to try.

What the guardian had not foreseen was the true resolve of her sovereign to be. She had since learned not to underestimate her as by choosing to at least try the woman before her had managed to save more lives that would have otherwise been lost.

A surge of power calls to her, and her reminiscence is cut short as she is aware of incoming temporal activity.

“My Queen,” she speaks with some authority, “Please step back from the gate,”

Complying, Neo Queen Serenity stands beside King Endymion as the gates of time slowly open in full.

Wait, are we saying that Crystal Tokyo's unending life also means there is no new life?
That seems unhealthily stagnant, no wonder Usa is happier in our time/world. I thought it was a problem of her royal circumstances before.

Guess that rules out a next gen crop of scouts in general, even if both parents might have been fortunate enough to make it to Tokyo before stasis. (Imagine Rin's father would have be one, for example.)
>>
>>42361869
The people of Crystal Tokyo are night immortal, and new life is slower to happen than in the present day.

Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion as well as the rest of the senshi are held fast aging frozen immortality ground zero.

Works well for Kanari too, who likes to bark at things and growl.

Ami & Aiha, cats. Seem quiet and aloof, with reading in place of catnaps, until the right person or event has their full attention.

Still early access so things change, but the core is exploring the galaxies, mining planets, finding hidden things, and fighting/building things.

Personally have found it more entertaining than Terraria. More variety to explore, npcs and quests, and visiting different worlds within the same universe (as opposed to generating new worlds and importing characters).
One of the nifty features is sharing coordinates for worlds, since that seed code will bring up the same world for other people, with some variation on exact chest contents but similar sort.
