"My sweet Camille, you finally came to visit your mama~"

"Wha Mistress, please let go of me, we have to get out of here!"

"Heehee, silly girl, I'm your mama, you don't call me that~"

"I don't even know any Camille! Mistress, we have to go, it's dangerous!"

>Mistress' opinion has temporarily risen by 100

"Shush now baby, you're safe with mama~"

This must be another effect of the fumes, she's completely convinced I'm someone I've never even heard of. Meanwhile, the air in the hut is only growing thicker with fog. I have to get out of here before they get to my head too, but how? Mistress has me held tight in her delirious iron grip, and she isn't listening to reason at all!

My name is Nadja, and as of yesterday I am the new witch apprentice to- actually, I don't know Mistress' real name yet. And technically I am not her apprentice yet until I complete the initiation rites, which are to take place during the Joining, the night after tomorrow. Though first I need to get Mistress and myself out of her poison filled house, somehow.

As if the situation wasn't awkward enough, Mistress begins rubbing her cheek against mine.

"Oh, my sweet Camille, I've missed you so much. Tell me, did you come home for mama's delicious fried frog legs? Or maybe to show mama a new trick?"

Argh, this isn't at all what I expected to deal with as an apprentice-to-be. How do I get out of this?

Of course! If you can't fight the current, ride it! And I've played this game a thousand times before, how could it not work?

"Pa-"

Damn it!

"Mama... How can you serve your yummy frog legs without any frog legs? We need to go catch some!"

"Ohooh, silly girl," she chuckles while ruffling my hair, "I always keep plenty in stock, just for you!"

Whoever this Camille person is, if she is anyone at all, certainly is important to Mistress! I'll have to think of something else.

"But... I'm bored! Let's go play outside!"

"Oh?" she remarks with surprise in her voice, "I thought you stopped playing games years ago, Camille?"

Ack, it's harder than I thought to pretend to be someone you know nothing about!

"Well, uhm..."

"...Yes? Speak up, girl!"

"I miss it! Okay? Can't we just play like in the old days, just today?"

"...Camille?"

It's not enough! I push at her as hard as I can, just barely managing to free my head from her chest so I can give her the puppy eyes.

"Pweeeease?"

Finally, she let's go of me.

"Hmhmm, like old days, then? I think I can do that, just promise to go easy on your old mama, the centuries do take their toll after all!"

Free at last, I grab her hand and drag her along, much easier now that she bothers to carry herself.

"Sure sure, promise!"

For the first time, the half-rotting stench of the bog actually feels welcome in my nose. With the sun making its first mark on the morning sky, the air is overflowing with activity, mainly icky insects of course, but at least the birds have begun to sing in the distance. Behind, the flow of smoke from the hut is showing no signs of letting up, even now that a third outlet has been opened.

As for Mistress, her claims to be worn by time turn out to be massively exaggerated as she easily catches up with me before I even realize the nature of the game we're supposedly playing, easily lifts me high into the air and...

>Mistress' opinion has returned to 5/100

"Huh? What am I doi-"

She looks up.

"New girl? Why are we playing Sparrow and- why do you even know this game? Explain immediately!"

That wore off much faster than I dared to hope.

"Well, uh, I'm not entirely sure myself..."

--

"So," she begins after finally letting me back on the ground, "if I understand you correctly, you found your mistress in a vulnerable situation and decided to take advantage of that to discover her personal secrets? Correct?"

I was only trying to help her, but she seems really angry, and she's the Mistress so I should probably apologize. I mean I guess I could have found a better solution so in a way it is my fault.

"I'm sorry Mistress, I was only trying to he-"

My words are immediately drowned out by a wet smack of palm against face, my thoughts cut off by the scorching sensation erupting in my cheek.

"What in the hells is wrong with you, child?"

Did... did I really do that bad?

"I endangered your life on your first day of apprenticeship, I made a complete embarrassment of myself, and you damn well saved my life, and you dare to apologize for that?"

"Mistress, I..."

"No! You want to be a witch, girl? You want to be the force that not even an emperor can be safe from? A wielder of powers never meant for mortals?"

"Well, I..."

"Then by the moons, have some pride! Get angry! Demand retribution! Do something more than stammer helplessly!"

It takes all my willpower to even look at her after that slap. I thought I had been punished before, but it suddenly becomes clear just soft papa has been with me, this sting is unlike any I've felt before. As I finally lift my gaze, I'm met with an angry glare as she stares me down expectantly. Is she serious or is this some kind of test? I am so confused...

>Push her into the water! [Revenge!]

"Then..."

Angry, be angry. Don't cry, be angry.

"Then I demand we begin my lessons immediately, no household chores!"

This warrants little more than a raised eyebrow from Mistress.

"I won't be your slave! Not yours, not anyone's!"

The slight smirk forming on her face gives me the affirmation I needed, and I immediately feel the heat rushing to my head as I increase the volume.

"I am smart! I am strong! I will be the greatest witch ever and you have no right to refuse me! You..."

"You..."

"WITCH!"

Mistress, for her part, responds with a simple nod and a calm statement that "I accept your terms, Apprentice Nadja."

Casting a glance behind her, at her home and its current state, she adds, "Though I suggest we limit ourselves to verbal lessons for the day. We do still have to prepare you for your rite, but I will allow you the choice of lesson."

I'm still panting heavily when she raises the question, in no way used to... expressing myself in a way like this. The excitement is so intense, I feel my eyes begin to well up, a fact Mistress is quick to notice.

Instinctively I flinch as she raises her hand towards me, but instead of the punishment I expected, she softly puts her hand on my head, speaking comforting words soft.

"That's enough for today, little one. You'll learn in time."

She gently moves her hand from the top of my head to my cheeks, wiping away the embarrassing tears. Is this... mothering?
>>

So you want us to be witch that tries to be great at everything?
>>
>>42331742

>>
>>42331844
"Now," she promptly reasserts herself with her usual strict tone, "You do have a choice to make. We can proceed to covering the steps of your rite of initiation, but I recommend saving that for tomorrow so it's fresh in your memory."

"More to my liking, we can work on introducing you to either of the three main disciplines of witchcraft. "

"First, there's Herbalism, which covers identifying and gathering ingredients as well as the brewing of potions both magical and mundane. With enough skill, almost any effect can be achieve in this field."

"Second, we can work on your Penmanship, so that you may soon learn to draw your first Circle and cast hexes. Hexes require a lot of work, but are potentially very powerful, and difficult to trace back to you."

"Last, and I admit this is not my specialty, is Infusion, the methods by which magic is joined with various instruments of wood, you probably know these as wands or a good old broom, to bestow upon them a single, permanent magical property."

"In time, we will cover all of three, but for now, I leave the choice of your first lesson to you. What will it be?"

>>

We can probably do even better than that, first we'll just have to figure out how it works.
>>
>>42332827
Then why not make him potions that relive back ache and give energy?
>>
>>42332878
Yeah, slip beneficial potions into his meals.
>>
>>42332878
Reliving back ache doesn't sound very nice.
>>
>>42332914
Wouldn't that be exactly the kind of tricks and cheating he would be mad about?
>>
>>42332935

But then we can get him into a sneaky witch argument, like is it "cheating" if he splints an arm he breaks or something
>>
>>42332935
Just say it is medicine since it is.
>>
We'd have to actually play the quest and get to know the situation better to understand what we need to do.
>>
>>42332935
There's a difference between making his competition suck and slipping him a potion to make sure he always sleeps well, subtle stuff like that.
>>
>>42332827
From what I understand the problem isn't the quality of Dad's work, he's better than the competition. They're just undercutting him and taking all his business. Making him more efficient so he could charge less would would help, but we need something else. Something to make his product more appealing so people are willing to go for the premium goods. It was mentioned last thread that there are a lot of adventurers who come through town, maybe we could learn to enchant Dad's work to corner the magic gear market?
>>
>>42332975
B-but we shouldn't drug Papa!
>>

According to his little daughter, we can't be sure he actually is better.

Too bad we can't do witchy things openly. A broom would really help with all the goddamn stairs in this terrible town.

I'm pretty sure Papa is the best smith in the world, and anyone who says otherwise is a filthy liar.
>>
>>42333004
>They're just undercutting him and taking all his business.
They aren't even doing that. It was mentioned in the first thread that their quality of workmanship is worse AND their prices are higher, which means either they're doing something shady or they've got some marketing wizardry going on. Maybe even literal marketing wizardry, who knows.

Or it was 100% about about reaching to make that Apple joke, but that's a little much.

>>42333030
This is worth considering as well, but I'd have assumed she'd think that because the father would have tried looking at the competition at least once and she would've been able to hear that from him.

But also because Papa made it and he is the best, naturally.
>>
>>42333056
To be sure.
>>42333030
Oh please, how COULD there be anyone better?
>>42333004
Enchantment is a great idea, yea. Ideally something "simple" like Not!Mithril as base to work off of rather than going full-blown BURNING SWORDS OF DESTINY right off the bat.

Assuming that we won't have to first beat the dragon to earn our broom
>>
>>42333070
Of course, but it mjight be helpful to find out how the other guy is 'pretending' to be better, s we can help papa.
>>
>>42333103
But our sister is already beating the dragon. Is she going to come back with our broom?
>>
>>42333117
Nah, the dragon is going to get away, and then fighting it with her will be one of the event flags for her ending. Or maybe I've been playing too much Atelier Totori. One or the other.
>>

We're telling sis about this witchcraft business, right? I hope we get the chance to do that.

I'd also like to spend time with the friends we apparently have one of these threads.

They all seem like they could be useful, but there's just something right about potionbrewing and gathering strange herbs. It's what a witch does, everybody knows that.

"Herbalism! That sounds way more fun!"

Mistress casts a crooked grin in response. "Fun? Your first choice of lessons is based entirely on what you think sounds more fun?"

>Mistress' opinion has increased by 5
>Mistress' current opinion: 10/100

"It is my personal favorite as well, and certainly an excellent choice for an outdoors lesson. But first, we must discuss a few of the basics of all witchcraft."

With careful steps, apparently as affected by the thick and sticky ground around the bog as anyone else would be, she leads me a short distance to a spot featuring three tree stumps arranged in an almost completely even triangle.

"You seemed well prepared yesterday, so let's put that knowledge to the test and I'll take over, hmm? First, what is the origin of magic?"

Hah! Kerstin taught me that when I told her about my plans, even though it's not something they're meant to teach in Sunday School.

"Magic originates from the twin moons, Mara and Vala. During the Joining, the yearly event in which the two align perfectly, they rain their blessings and punishments down on the lands!"

Mistress nods slowly, seemingly satisfied with my answer. "Very good. Continuing where you left off, these... blessings, come in the shape of the sparkles, a volatile and elusive substance. Mastering the sparkles is the key to wielding magic, and as my apprentice I will provide you the tools. Of course, it is not as simple as just picking it up off the ground, as direct contact with even a single sparkle can have... very unpleasant effects. In fact, I know only of one case where a human has come out of such an encounter relatively intact."
>>
>>42333238
Oh, I know this one! Sunday School instincts kicking in, I immediately throw my right hand into the air, an act Mistress does her best to shrug off.

"THAT is really not necessary here. Just speak up, girl."

"I know the answer! That happened to my friend Amalia and she grew the most adorable animal ears so now she can hear really well!"

At that, mistress seems genuinely surprised. "You certainly keep interesting company, don't you? You are correct, however, I must stress that the girl was incredibly lucky and YOU should never, ever, risk repeating her mistake."

"Now, to the main subject, there are essentially two kinds of potions we make. Magical potions include a sparkle to achive the intended effect and require great precision, nonmagical potions rely entirely on the natural properties of herbs and are much less picky about the exact quantity of ingredients. I'm sure you can guess where we will start."

What follows is quite a lengthy description of many of the important plants and, occasionally, animal parts used in common potions as she leads me confidently around the woods surrounding her home, easily spotting the samples from many paces away. Her experience with this particular field is unquestionable, and I can only do my best to try to soak up all the details and how to tell the difference between a wyrmroot and simple wormroot.

>Herbalism: Fledgling

At the end of the lesson, the sun is already beginning to set and my stomach announcing in no uncertain terms that it is time to end the day. Tomorrow I should make sure to bring lunch, and demand a lunch break, as Mistress seems to care little for the passage of time when she is working her craft.

"Mistress, before I go, is there anything I should bring in preparation for tomorrow's rite?"

Instead of a straight response, she looks me up and down meticulously, seemingly weighing and measuring every last inch of me with her eyes. Finally, she speaks.

"Courage, as much as you can find."

"Will it be dangerous?"

The witch smiles that same smile from when I first met her, causing my entire body to stiffen in fear.

"Extremely. Good night."

It isn't until a big, icky-slimy-toad jumps unto my foot that I finally regain control of my legs, proceeding with the fastest return trip from Mistress' house I would ever take. And also the loudest.

I wouldn't sleep that night.

THREAD TWO END

Are sparks dangerous because they cause spontaneous combustion?
If not why are they known as dangerous?
How much of them will we eat to become a witch?
>>
>>42333915
Some kind of vision quest? What's the failure rate here? Is Mistress considering us a walking dead person and trying not to get attached?

And that make for a somewhat shorter thread than I originally planned, but since it turns out that I have to get up earlier tomorrow than I thought when I decided to run two threads in two days, it's how it must be.

Rolling Paradox.
>>
>>42334027
Pretty much, though sparks are not completely unpredictable. Under identical circumstances, they will always produce the same result. On a person, well, no person is identical so the outcome can only be predicted by something with a far greater understanding than any human could hope to attain.

Now, used on simple objects, such as a water-based mixture or a shaped piece of wood, the number of factors approach something a human CAN feasibly control. That is the secrets of magic wielders, the exact method needed to create tools with desirable effects. For example, the exact shape required to make a broom that flies instead of a broom that turns to life and devours you, is something a witch might know, and something you'd definitely want to learn from her before ever attempting to make one yourself.

>>42333973
She did indeed try not to.

On that subject our sister probably knows why popa's not selling stuff.
