Bit of a late start, sorry about that. I know I said 1800, but had a minor snafu with dinner, so I'll have to go make some- probably just throw togther a couple sandwiches or something.

Sorry about last weekend, not sure what happened there. Had a monster headache, ended up going to bed right after I canned the run and slept for about ten hours.

Anyway, archive here:

++

The girls have been in bed better than an hour, and at this point you're mostly sure they're actually asleep. You've got the TV on down low in the background, a program on the 501st Joint Fighter Wing out of Castle Barin during the war, while you sit at the dining room table with the three witches in your life, all of you, by some unspoken agreement, there to discuss the recent news.

"So you're sure?" You repeat for what seems like the third time.

"Very." Ice affirms with a nod, looking over at Katya, who shares the nod.

"We both... checked." Katya says, picking up for Ice. "We are as sure as we can be at this stage."

"So what does this mean? Besides the obvious, I mean." You ask, taking a drink.

"Right now?" Ice asks, and you nod. "Nothing, really. I mean- besides-" She kind of trails off.

>>
"What she is trying to say is it will not affect her ability to lead... or fight, should that be necessary." Katya fills in. "At least for a month, perhaps longer."

"After that?" You ask.

"After that, most likely I'll be recalled by the coven and placed on the temporary inactive list." Ice explains. "And Rachel will get command until I come back."

"Assuming they don't just reduce our staffing to peacetime levels and start transferring people out." Rachel adds. "It's not like they haven't done that before."

"Well, right." Ice agrees, nodding. "Assuming they leave the staffing alone, I'll be out a couple of months, plus maternity leave-"

"Which will be shorter if Wendy is your handmaiden or whatever the brits call it." Rachel says, looking at Ice.

Ice hesitates. "She's-"

"Don't tell me you're thinking of telling her no." Rachel says, her voice flat. "Bullshit everyone else, don't try to bullshit me."

"Well-" Ice starts, then looks at each of you. "You can't say she's not helpful!" She huffs, apparently not seeing the expressions she wanted to.

"Too helpful." Rachel says. "Tabby, that girl was abused as hell and don't try and say she wasn't. She's just glad you're not treating her like something you'd scrape off the bottom of your boot."

"Look, either way it's not what we're talking about right now." Ice says. "What should we do about..." She pauses, moving her hands vaguely. "This?"

[] What do you mean what should we do?
[] Well, I mean, it's obvious, I'll have to take responsibility.

[x] Well, I mean, it's obvious, I'll have to take responsibility.

You shrug. "I mean, it's pretty obvious to me, I'll take responsibility."

Slider gives you that look again. "Duh, we knew that already." She says. "Not like you'd have gotten away anyway. We mean what do we plan to do about, you know, living arrangements."

Katya nods. "I am sure the coven will be more than happy to be providing something." She says. "But it is also meaning we are in their debt, at least for a time."

"It's not like we're in bad shape with money." Ice points out. "Especially right now, we've got money if we want get a place somewhere, maybe out in the country some?"

"Too early to be talking about that anyway." Slider points out. "What we need to be worried about is what if we're not sent home soon, and you've gotta head back to the states inactive before we go home, what we're going to do with the girls, especially Anya, and how we want to announce this."

"Announce it?" You ask.

Ice nods. "The covens like to be notified about things like this." She says. "Weddings, pregnancies, that kind of thing. It's not like we have to, but it's considered being polite."

"Announcing your personal affairs is polite?" You ask.

"Sure, when you're tracked like we are." Slider says. "I mean, we're not treated like livestock, but-"

"But the covens can be intrusive if they want to be." Ice says, speaking over Slider. You get the feeling it's a conversation they've had before. "It's usually not a big deal, but..."

"But you're the last Romanov, and I'm... me." You say, searching for the right word to describe yourself.

She nods. "Exactly. The coven doesn't know about the Romanov part-"

"Yet." Slider interjects. Ice nods again.

1/2
>>
"Yet. It'll come out sooner or later, I'm sure. But your kids?" She looks at you. "Especially your kids with a witch? that's going to be a big deal."

"What if they're boys? I wouldn't mind a son, you know." You say.

Katya and Ice both laugh, and you frown. "What, I say something funny?"

Katya nods. "Witches are tending to have girls." She says. "With you, it is likely any child of ours will be a witch herself."

"Mom had three sons before Jess came along." You point out.

"I mean, that happens, but it's unusual." Ice says. "I think you need to settle with the fact that you're probably going to have daughters."

"And no sons." You say.

"Does that bother you?" Slider asks.

[x] Not really, I guess. Just pointing it out.

You shrug. "Not really, I guess, just pointing it out. But," You add, before anyone can say anything else. "If I do have a son, I'd like to name him after my grandfather. I'd have never been a pilot if not for him."

"I don't have a problem with that." Slider says. "But don't get your hopes up, the odds aren't in your favor there."

"So what you're saying is we'll have to try a lot?" You ask, grinning at her.

"I'm saying-" She pauses, realizing what you said. "Ha-ha, Frank."

"I mean, if you're volunteering....." You continue, grin still plastered to your face.

"I am thinking it is perhaps someone else's turn to try." Katya says, breaking into the conversation. "Or perhaps someone's turn to celebrate?" She turns and looks at Ice, who blushes.

"I-I-I- I mean, i-it's fine if Y-you want to stay with him tonight K-katya." She stammers. "O-or maybe we could let Rachel have another night with him? I-I don't mind."

"Oh no." Slider says. "I had him all week. someone else can deal with his snoring ass."

She pokes you in the ribs as she talks, looking over at you. "You, sir, snore."

"Sorry." You offer sheepishly.

"A-anyway, back to the s-subject." Ice says, recovering her composure a bit. "H-how should we do this?"

"Well, way I see it, there's not too much choice." Slider says. "The coven's gonna want to know, and I get the feeling Matron Dowding's gonna be interested, too. And she knows about your family, so..." She trails off.

>>
"But there is no requirement to be telling her, only our own coven." Katya points out. "And there is no need to be saying anything so soon, we are all knowing that they will want to verify the announcement and be making sure there is a midwife available." She pauses, looking over at Ice. "And that you are seeing her regularly."

"What's the downside to not telling them right away?" You ask.

Ice shrugs. "Nothing, really, but it's considered improper and kind of rude."

"Rude?" You ask, and she nods.

"It's seen as a witch not trusting her matrons or her sisters." She says. "Long story short it tends to be one of those things that may not get mentioned, but can get remembered."

"Well, either way, it's your call, Tabby." Slider states, leaning back in her chair far enough to prop her heels up on the table.

"I am thinking you should not tell them right away." Katya says, earning her a look from Slider. She either doesn't notice or pretends not to. "We are already having enough attention on us, there is no reason to bring any more yet."

"I was thinking we should..." Ice fidgets a bit, and looks over at Slider, who grins and wiggles her stockinged toes at her friend. "Everyone's been good to us since Longstreet backed off, and it might help my case about Wendy."

"Oh good, a tie." Slider grouses. "Frank?"

By the way Anons, how do witches become mediwitches? Can any witch become a mediwitch (with requisite training and studying) or is it limited to only a few?

You nod, agreeing with Ice. "Tabitha is right." You say. "We ought to be polite here, most of them have been pretty reasonable after Longstreet got the message."

Katya shrugs. "If that is what you are wanting to do, then that is what we can do." She says. "Not this late, of course, we will have to wait until morning to go to the embassy."

"Wait, the embassy?" You ask, confused. "There's a witch there?"

"Of course, dummy." Slider says. "There's a matron in residence, usually to help the ambassador with shit involving the host nation's country. Simple shit."

"Huh. Well, do you think I'll have time to call my folks?" You ask, looking at your watch and doing some fast math- thankfully, London is on GMT, so for your parents, it's only early afternoon- they may not even be home.

[x] Yeah, I'll go call right now.

"Yeah." You answer, nodding. "I'm not even sure they know about Stasya and Lilya, let alone Anya, and I'd rather they heard about it from me than from the news or a tabloid."

"Makes sense." Slider says, putting her feet back on the ground and looking over at Katya. "Kat, I'm going to get my PJs and toothbrush and shit and move them to Ice's room, if you wanna get your things and move them over here."

Katya nods, and the two of them leave the table as you stand up and head over to the phone hung on the wall. You punch in your parent's number from memory, though you still get an operator- international call, you remember suddenly, you forgot to punch in the code for that.

The phone rings three or four times before your dad picks it up. "Bishop residence, this is Bob."

"Heya Dad." You greet, noting your old man sounds out of breath. "Busy?"

"Frank?" He sounds surprised. "Your mother had me doing yardwork. What's going on? Been a while since we heard from you."

"Well, you know. Haven't really been able to get to a phone." You respond. "Been traveling a lot. We're in Europe now, though."

"Europe?" He asks. "You're ok? We heard what those crazy bastards did on the border-"

"Yeah, I'm fine, dad." You reassure him. "I'm not calling from a hospital or anything like that."

"So what's been going on, boy?" He asks. "You hardly ever write, it drives your mother nuts."

1/3
>>
"Yeah, sorry." You respond, sheepishly. "Haven't had much chance to." The last is a lie- but he knows how it goes, and he's played the game before.

"Well, I guess it isn't a problem now. So what can you tell us?"

"Well, you've been watching the news?" You ask, trying to figure out how to break it all to him.

"Some of it, and people tell us when our kids show up in it." He says. "Why?"

"Anything involving me?" You prompt.

"Hmm. Well, there was something a month or so ago about you being awarded a French medal and a kraut cross, something about Berlin?" He says, thinking. "And- oh, no, wait, there was something, your grandmother called us about it- Crete, was it? Something about-"

"Yeah, congratulations, grandpa." You say.

"Grandpa?!" He exclaims. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"I adopted a pair of witches after Crete, long story that we don't have time for." You say. "You'll see why when you meet them."

"Your mother is going to kill you, you know." He says, placidly- dad doesn't tend to freak out about news like this.

"Well, at least she can only do it once." You point out. "There's three of them, one's at the colonel's place right now though."

"The colonel? why's she there?"

"Medical rest." You say. "He's the most trustworthy guy I know in that area, and her docs are out of San Diego. Another long story."

"Sounds like you have a few of those." He says.

"Well, they're all adopted, so..." You trail off.

"I guess that's not so bad, then." He responds. "Your mother is still going to freak out."

2/3
>>
"Well, and my girlfriend is pregnant." You say. There's a noticeable pause on the other end of the line.

"Care to repeat that?" He asks.

"My girlfriend is pregnant." You repeat.

"Your... girlfriend....is pregnant?" He asks, slowly.

"Well, one of my girlfriends." You correct. "See, there's three of them, and-"

"You know what, Frank? Don't tell me." He stops you there, and you have to work to not laugh at the expression you know is on his face. "I won't tell your mother unless someone else does, and you can explain it all to her. In person."

"Should I bring, like, a bear suit or something?" You ask.

"A body bag might not be out of order." He responds. "But you're still alive and healthy for now, right?"

"Yeah." You confirm for him. "Doing good, we've been moved back as part of the cease fire. No idea how long we'll be here, though."

"Alright." He says. "Well, listen. You're mom's out right now, but I'll tell her you called." He pauses. "I won't tell her why you called, just that you called and that you're alright and everything is fine."

You laugh. "Sounds good, dad. tell her sorry I missed her."

"I will. Take care, Frank." He says, and you hang up.

"So how did it go?" Katya asks from behind you. You turn around and she practically pins you to the wall, an impish smile on her face.

[] both cos I'm too tired to argue.

"About as well as can be expected, I guess." You respond, pointedly ignoring how close she's managed to get.

"Mmh." She responds. "Not well?"

"Mom's gonna kill me." You say, sadly.

"I imagine we will have some disagreement then." She responds.

"I imagine." You grin, leaning back into her just enough to get her off balance for a second- then reversing your position on her. "Miss me?"

"That is a silly question." She responds, leaning forward to try and kiss you- you back your head off just enough to keep her out of reach. "From a silly pilot."

"That's not an answer." You point out.

"Of course." She says, as you let her off the wall and the two of you share an embrace. "I am distracted by worrying about Anya, but I missed you all."

"We missed you both too." You say, after a second. "So what's going on for the day? Should I go get the girls up?"

Katya frowns. "You shouldn't have let them go back to bed after breakfast like that." She says. "You spoil them."

You shrug. "I seem to have a habit of doing that for people." you respond- and she grins again.

"Perhaps you wouldn't mind allowing them to sleep a bit longer, and spoil me some?"

"Hmm. I'll have to think about it."

You don't have to think too long though- it was a long flight, and you're sure the girls could use the nap.
