You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You had just prevailed over Reikland's representatives in Breton's jousting contest in one of the most spectacular ways possible, knocking out both Gregor and Hess in a single blow. Now you were standing in the middle of a cheer stadium, the ground literally quaking with the applause. As you look on, you can see Lord Artois and his entourage, as well as your platoon approaching you. Meanwhile, Tarin and Hess seemed to be in some sort of "discussion" at the medic tent.

Hey, not too bad at all! If you can pick up a set of sketching pencils, you could really do some nice stuff without putting in much more effort at all. I imagine a good set would cost less than $7 bucks... screw it, let me get you an example link.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Essentials-Artist-Set-Sketching/24419334

Something like that. The HB pencil is the "zero point", the B pencils have more graphite for darker lines and easier shading, and the H pencils have less graphite and more filler so they produce a lighter, finer line. You can use the 6B to throw in some shading in dark areas and really make the image pop, while using the H pencils to throw down "test lines" and experiment while knowing that they should erase pretty easily. Also, kneaded erasers beat the tar out of the cruddy one on the back-end of your pencil.

You decide to head off Lord Artois to make sure he didn't see the commotion going on in the medic tent. Besides, as the commander, you were pretty much the "face" of the crew, anyways. You walk up in front of Artois and his retinue, and Artois stops in his tracks and gives you a respectful nod.

"You've done well, young man." Lord Artois smiles. "With this victory, the King's decision is all but assured. You have proven that Tilea possesses warriors worthy of our respect."

"So what do we do now?" You ask.

"Now? You celebrate." Artois chuckles. "The official award ceremony will not occur until the end of festivities, so you still have most of the day to yourself before you must be called upon."

"I don't have to dress up or anything, do I?" You frown.

"Of course not. The crowd often prefers winners wear their typical battle attire when accepting awards." Artois explains. "While it would be better if you wore a seat of armor like most knights do, your attire is sufficient."

"Wait... what?" You blink. "You guys wear PLATE ARMOR inside your VTs?"

"In battle, we do." Lord Artois nods. "After all, a knight is expected to continue to fight, even if his steed is slain."

You don't even want to know how they pull something like that off without being roasted alive. Maybe they just had squires do all the actual crewing.

"Anyways, where is Tarin?" Artois looks around. "Isn't she always by your side?"

Damn. You actually can't see the inside of the medic tent from here, so you're not sure if she had disengaged from Hess yet or not.

"Ah, my apologies, but she's a bit busy right now." You explain. "Perhaps you can see her later?"

"Ah, pity. I would've liked to congratulate the both of you." Artois sighs. "Well, I must make an audience with the King. I shall see you at the ceremony, then."

With that, Artois and his retinue march off, leaving just you and the rest of your platoon.

"Hey kid, great job with that match." Rock grins, holding an ice pack to the side of his head. "You really showed her!"

"And got some payback for us." Alex nods in agreement.

"Can't say that you didn't do a good job." Bannon grunts. "But it looked like you getting a bit too friendly with her at the end there. It's not necessarily me, but some people could see that as troublesome."

Gotta show off in front of the Bretons. This isn't a trench line, the rules on "fraternization" aren't the same here. Everything's political, and showing that bit of kindness to the enemy won a lot of hearts and minds.

Also, if we can compromise her as an intelligence asset, that could turn the tide of something much bigger in the future. Gotta think long-term favors.

"I was just helping out a fellow tanker." You say innocently. "I mean, this is a contest, not a battle.People aren't supposed to die during those, right?"

"I suppose." Bannon grumbles. "Be that as it may, it's gonna look bad at home if people see you cozying up to a Reikland officer. Much less a girl officer."

"Oh, don't be silly, sir." Parker interjects with a smile. "I think trying to open up diplomatic relations with Reikland is a perfectly legitimate strategy! I mean, we ARE here on behalf of the diplomatic corps, after all!"

"Hmmm, I suppose." Bannon grumbles. "But if Sawyer starts giving me flak over it then we'll see."

"Well, we'll worry about it when the time comes!" Parker smiles.

"Oh, so you're all here." Tarin says simply as she just materializes behind you.

"Tarin!" You smile. "So, uh, were your 'conflicts' with Hess resolved?"

"She wanted to come personally thank you, but I insisted she stay in bed until she was fully examined." Tarin shrugs. "She resisted, so I had to be a little forceful. She won't be bothering us for the time being."

You could sense the kernel of truth in Tarin's words. You weren't sure if she was telling the whole truth, though.

"Hey! Roy!" Axel calls out as he comes running in. "We saw the fight! It was freaking AWESOME! Alfie damn near got a heart attack!"

"I-I did not!" Alfie protests as she tries to keep up with her brother.

"Well now, the gang is all here!" Rock laughs. "How about we go celebrate as a group? Or..."

His eyes then fall on you and Tarin.

"Well, you and Tarin didn't get a chance to see the fair, right? Maybe you two would like some alone time?"

"Oho, so I was right." Rock chuckles. "Go for it kid. He's earned it, right sir?"

"I guess." Bannon nods and turns to you. "But be careful. Even though this is friendly territory, there's no telling what may happen. You just ruined the plans of a lot of powerful people, after all."

"I'll keep that in mind." You nod. "But I got Tarin to watch my back."

"Yeah, he's in good hands." Axel nods.

"Well, we'll just leave it to you, then!" Parker says happily as she gently shoves Bannon away. "You still have us on radio so let us know if you need anything!"

"Sure thing." You nod as you watch your platoon disperse to do their own things.

"Well, let's get something to eat first. I'm STARVING." You say.

"All right." Tarin nods, falling in behind you.

The two of you head over to the fair grounds, where it seemed that word of your win has already spread. Everywhere you go, you're greeted with cheers and blessings and congratulations from the people you pass by. Apparently they were all mightily impressed by your decisive strikes. Very few knights in the history of Breton's games could boast knocking out consecutive opponents like that. It's honestly a bit troublesome, having to wade your way through an adoring crowd. You'd take anonymity any day if this is how inconvenient fame was!

Finally, you and Tarin manage to catch some respite when you reach the main food court, where the patrons were all too busy drinking and eating to pay much attention to what was going on around them. As you look, you see lot of the typical fair foods. Sausages, pastries, all kinds of cooked meats. However, you see Tarin's attention drawn to one stall in particular.

"I'm guessing you want the giant turkey legs?" You ask.

Tarin nods rapidly.

The both of you head over the stall, where the people in the long, long, line gladly make way for you.

Maybe fame DID have some perks, after all.

"Ah! It's an honor to have the jousting champions come to my humble little stall!" The stall owner gasps and slides two MASSIVE turkey legs across the counter towards you. "Here! Here! Take these free of charge!

Okay, so fame DID have perks.

You and Tarin manage to find an unoccupied table, where you egin working you way through the turkey legs. Tarin of course is like a machine, meticulously chewing her way through the leg to scrape ever last bit of meat off the bone.

"You like it?" You ask.

Not even stopping her eating, Tarin's eyes meet yours and she gives a slight nod.

"Hey! Hey yooooouuuuu!"

You turn to see that the source of the voice was a half, possibly fully, drunken man, teetering dangerously over his chair, a large mug of beer in his hand as he points an accusing finger to you.

"You cheeeeaaaaaaaaated, didn't you?! You big FAKES!"

"Don't mind him." A passing barmaid whispers to you. "He lost a little too much coin to the gamblers and had a bit too much drink."

R&D departments have been trying to figure that one out since the beginning of humans wearing armor. Plate armor, for instance, dampens your mobility but was good at protecting against bladed attacks. On the other hand, leather armor usually provided good mobility with less joint protection. It's even worse when you're trying to armor servos, since those are bulky.

However, your momentary bliss is interrupted when you feel a hand your shoulder and the stench of alcohol fills your alcohol.

And with a sigh, you pull down, slamming the man's head into the table. The man grunts in pain and surprise as his arms flail around in an attempt to retaliate, so you just slam his head into the wooden table a couple more times until he finally stops moving.

Everybody around you is looking, curiously, but then almost all uniformly turn away as if nothing had happened. You guess that was the Breton deference to authority showing its hand here.

"Not bad." Tarin says as she finally sets the turkey bone down and wipes her hands off with a napkin. "Though if you were really trying, you would've knocked him down in one hit."

"Well, I didn't want to KILL the guy." You say defensively.

"Well, he was trying to pick a fight. His fault if he didn't consider the consequences." Tarin says as she stands up, dropping her napkin on the unconscious drunk. "Anyways, we should get going now. Where to next?"

"Let's try out some games. How does that sound?" You grin.

"Sure." Tarin nods. "I wonder if they have anything like back in Tilea."

"Only one way to find out." You grin.

The two of you head out of the food court and to the section of the fair dedicated to the stalls that hosted the games. Your eyes scan all of the signs, trying to decide what would be best suited for the two of you.

"How about a little test of strength?" You suggest, pointing to one of the stalls, which had one of those little pedals you hit with a hammer to propel a weight into the air. A mainstay of every carnival.

"So you can lose to me again?" Tarin raises an eyebrow.

"Now we all know that one contest was rigged in your favor." You frown. "And I was going easy on you, too."

"Whatever you say." Tarin shrugs. "So are you going to go first?"

"Of course!" You nod and walk up to the stall. where you see all sorts of prizes hung on the wall.

"Any of these can be yours if can show you have the strength to win!" The vendor hawks his game to you. "If you can propel the weight high enough to ring the bell, then can choose anything off this wall!"

Well then...

"Okay, you're on." You say as you dig for your wallet.

"Oh no, free of charge for the joust winner!" The vendor insists.

Yep. It's nice to have perks.

The vendor then hands you a hammer, which looked to be a repurposed battle mace. It was heavy in your hands, signifying it was the real thing.

"Well?" Tarin asks.

Jeez, why was she always like this when it came to a competition between the two of you?

You raise the hammer over you head, briefly losing your balance as you try to compensate for the massive weight over your head. However, you find your footing, and you pause in order to make sure you had the proper stance before swinging the hammer over you head and slamming it down on the pedal.

The pendulum then shoots up from the resulting force, going higher and higher. However, the higher it went, the more it seemed to slow down, but it manages to make it all the way to top, striking the bell with a loud DING.

"Congratulations! Like a true champion!" The vendor claps. A few passerbyes also give a little cheer for you. "Now, as promised, you may choose any prize you see here!"

You look at the wall of prizes. So many choices... though your gaze is drawn to a number of massive plush animals.

"All these fine toys are based off of the royal animals of Breton!" The vendor boasts. "It is good luck to have one by your side!"

Really now...

You point to the wolf plushy. Back home, wolves were treated with healthy amounts of respect, and were considered the kings of the forest. Something you felt was absolutely fitting for a girl like Tarin.

"Ooooh, good choice. The symbol of the Northern houses!" The vendor smiles. "You look to have the blood of the Northerners in you, as well!"

You're not sure if he was just doing his usual shill job or if his eye was really that good. You just take the wolf plushie from him and give it to Tarin.

"Oh, thank you." Tarin says, holding the plushie out to get a better look at it. "It looks nice."

"I does." You nod, noting how Tarin was very busy keeping herself from smiling.

"Anyways, it's my turn now." Tarin hands the Wolf plushie back to you for safekeeping as she rolls up her sleeves.

"What, now?" You blink.

"Well, it's not a contest if only one of us goes, right?" Tarin looks back at you.

Tarin bends down to pick up the hammer, testing its weight and balance as she does so. Satisfied that she had a good idea of how it would perform, she raises it over her head and slams it down on the pedal. The pendulum is propelled upwards and hits the bell with a DING.

"Ah, another winner!" The vendor says happily. "Go on, pick a prize!"

Tarin walks up to the counter and her eyes flit about for a second before she points to one particular plushie.

"That one."

The vendor obediently takes the indicated plushie, which was a large horse, with a stupid smile on its face and little nubs for legs. It was horrendously, stupidly cute.

"Are you sure about this one?" The vendor asks. "This one is normally meant for the younger ones, you see. I don't think it would do for a fine lady like you-"

"No, no, this is fine." Tarin assures him. "Thank you."

The vendor gives the both of you an obedient nod before backing away to tend to other customers. Tarin walks up to you and hands you the horse plushie.

"Here. For you." She says. "We'll call it a tie, so even trade."

You just stare at the horse, and it stares back with its derpy eyes and sloppy smile.

"How about the VT exhibition?" You suggest. "I hear that VT builders from all over the world come here to show off their latest and greatest works!"

"Probably because the Bretons are dumb enough to buy them." Tarin shakes her head.

"Well, considering the Bretons are into mass production units, I think that suits them just fine." You laugh. "Besides, it'll give us a preview on what we can expect to see in the future, yeah?"

"I guess." Tarin nods, hugging her wolf close. "Let's go then."

The two of you head over to the far end of the fairgrounds, where there's an open field wet aside where all sorts of VTs of every shape and size were stored. Large ones, small ones, standard bipedals, and even multipeds. You also noticed a good deal more royalty milling about in this section, no doubt knights and lords looking for prospective new steeds.

"Ah, Roy, I thought I'd see you come by here!" Parker smiles as she approaches. "Couldn't stay away from all the shiny new VTs, eh?"

"Well, you know me." You smile. "What are you doing here, anyways?"

"Intelligence, of course!" Parker holds up a camera and notepad. "It's always helpful to keep up on current VTs to determine future threats, after all!"

"Ah, I get it." You nod.

"Anyways, Reikland has a few units on display here. I was going to go get a good look at them before they pack up."

"Pack up?" You blink. "They're leaving?"

"Sure, why not." You shrug. "It'll give us a better idea of what the Reiks are gonna throw at us."

"Exactly!" Parker nods. "I was going to ask Bannon to escort me there, but he didn't really seem to be in the mood, so you two are real lifesavers!"

"That dangerous?" Tarin asks.

"Well, even though this is neutral ground, it's still the Reiklanders we're talking about, and they're our number one enemy at the moment." Parker points out. "It would be nice to have people watching my back, you know?

"Understandable." Tarin nods.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" You ask. "Let's go!"

Your now group of three head over to where the Reiklanders have set up shop. There, you see more examples of the new Panther VT that Gregor and Hess were using, sleek and black like before. However, you gloss over these machines, since you already had a rough idea of how they worked.

Instead, your attention was drawn to...

Given Reiklands tendency for superweapons the four legged one will be an AT-TE and the superheavy a Titan

"Hey, what's that thing?" You ask, pointing to the diagram.

"A new VT concept, apparently." Parker's eyes flash. "Come on, let's go see!"

The three of you walk over to the large diagram. Now that you were closer, you could get a better look at it. It was was huge, with four legs instead of two, and based on the comparison to the tiny ants that were actually people crewing it, the thing was the size of a large building. In addition, it was mounting a massive cannon, battleship grade. In addition, the bottoms of its feet seemed to be in an odd configuration. Instead of the standard feet, there were instead treads.

"Look." Tarin points to a advertising board under the diagram.

BEHOLD, THE LITTLE GUSTAV MOBILE SIEGE GUN. THE WEAPON DESIGNED TO END ALL FUTURE CONFLICTS

WITH THIS WEAPON, FORTIFICATIONS HAVE BECOME OBSOLETE. WITH ITS 16 INCH CANNON, THE LITTLE GUSTAV OUTRANGES ALL CONVENTIONAL ARTILLERY, AND WILL DESTROY ANY AND ALL TARGETS IN A SINGLE STRIKE. IN ADDITION, A REVOLUTIONARY PROPULSION SYSTEM GIVES THE LITTLE GUSTAV AND UNPRECEDENTED TACTICAL AND STRATEGIC MOBILITY, SURPASSING ALL PREVIOUS GENERATIONS OF VERTICAL TANKS.

"There's no way this can be real." Tarin frowns. "They must be puffing it up."

"It does seem too good to be true..." Parker frowns. "But Reikland has shown some terrifying scientific progress recently..."

C'mon, these are the Reikzies. Of course they have crazy superweapons. And the only thing that can beat those superweapons is Tilean Honor, Courage, and Commitment!

It's fake, though someone in the upper echelons will probably insist that it be mass produced.

See if we can get a copy of that diagram or a pic of it.

At the very least, I'd think they'd just make a wooden mock-up or something.

"I get the feeling that it's real, but there's no way it can perform the way this ad is claiming it can." You frown. "I mean, the size of that thing alone is detrimental. It dwarfs even most heavy VTs, and the mobility on those is terrible. And those would have to be some pretty damn strong treads to be able to carry all that weight."

"As observant as always." Parker smiles. "I knew I could count on you for a bit of technical insight."

Suddenly, bells begin to ring throughout the fairgrounds, just as the Reik guards begin to usher and shoo everybody out of their exhibit.

"Well, it looks like it's time to go." Parker grins. "You two have an award ceremony to go to, after all!"

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next Saturday, and don't forget Ace Combat on Friday!

Will we ever find out, what Tarin did to Hess?
>>

Established who was the Primrary wife
>>
>>42346821
she threatened her with the ritual dismemberment of everyone she ever met if she tries to take Roy away
>>

I thought she gave her too many sleeping pills or morphine.?

>>42346821
Does it matter? I doubt anything Tarin could do in that short amount of time would prevent Hess from showing up later on to try and capture Roy for herself.
>>
>>42346951
I would not be surprised if we get knocked out and wake up tied to her bed naked.
