Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistant and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

“Alright, give me a few moments to put on some clothes…” is what you said to Celeste before you hung up. Then you blinked. On reflection, you could have reworded that better. To say that you, Takashi Wakui the Fool of the 22nd Century, needed to dress yourself might convey a certain message to your female Magician friend. That is to say, you were lacking clothes and needed to rectify this. You contemplate this while wearing the grey shirt and trousers combo you picked out for your fourteenth birthday.

Then you shrug your shoulders and slice off the tracks steadying this train of thought. There’s a job to be done. You exit the living room and enter your bedroom.

It’s a fairly ordinary room for an adolescent boy, by modern standards. Bed, wardrobe of clothes and a bedside drawer—the usual. Your mobile hums in its charger slot. A dated, sleek black laptop perches upon a bleached white study desk. Nanjo brand, only 4.0 PetaHertz of processing speed and 8 petabytes of memory—not nearly enough to play the newest and coolest games without several files worth of tweaking. There’s a poster of two android idols that you received for free at a concert. Two contrasting colored androids of the AEGIS model, posing on a concert like they suddenly realized they were standing on a floor of burning coals. It is the only piece of merchandise you possess and it would be a real shame to leave it decaying in a closet elsewhere. So you hung it up on the wall, thus forever giving your nee-san the impression you had a thing for robot girls.

They’re cute, you admit with a degree of reluctance, but some things in this Shadow-infested, Persona-dominated world are just too pure.

“What should I wear today?”

You scan the contents of your wardrobe. Inside is an assortment of shirts, jumpers, trousers and socks, half of which your mother had forcefully insisted on buying for you. You had resisted with the might of a thousand fire spells. Then Shizuka backed your mother up, giggling at how ‘adorable’ you looked and the battle was lost. Then it was trampled on, covered in gasoline, set alight and thrown off the balcony of your academy.

“Too formal…too formal…god that looks ugly. Did I pick that out myself? Nah, no way…”

You settle for a khaki hoodie and a pair of blue jeans.

"That took weirdly long."

>>Takashi: Leave the apartment.

“Oh, Takashi.” Shizuka calls as you move towards the door. “Are you going out?”

“Yeah.” You reply.

“Where to?” She asks.

“I’m meeting up with Celeste.” You reply. “She asked me to give her a tour around the city.”

“Celeste? Oh, that nice girl we helped move in.” Shizuka says. “The one who you walk with to school every morning.”

“Yeah. It’s her.” You say. “She’s not my classmate though.”

“And she asked you personally to show you around the city. You alone, and none of any other friends.” Shizuka is now smirking and you suddenly feel as if mentioning today’s plans was a terrible idea. “I didn’t know my little brother was growing up so fast! Takashi, could this be a d—”

“No. No, no, no and no, nee-san.” You growl. “Don’t you start; I can see the cogs spinning around in your brain. Celeste and I are friends. That’s it.”

“Oh, is that denial I hear?” Shizuka smiles, “That’s exactly the sort of thing a young fellow would excuse himself with before sprinting outside to meet with his lover.”

“Where the hell are you coming up with these ideas? Wait, I know." You point at the twin lumps extruding from her chest. "All of those romance serials have corrupted you, nee-san. Stop watching them.”

“Hey, that was uncalled for.” Shizuka pouts. “Those television shows are fine art, Takashi.”

“Maybe in the mirror universe they are.” You say. “I tried watching one. It was so saccharine it almost gave me type two diabetes!”

“You’re too young to appreciate them, Takashi.” Shizuka sighs and shakes her head, waggling her index finger the air. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll understand once you grow up.”

“Uh-huh.” You mutter. “And I’m going to marry a princess from a faraway kingdom and live happily ever after.”

“But seriously now, Takashi, do you have any money for the tour?” When you don’t answer, she nods and smiles. “Knew it. Here, I’ll give this to you.”

>Obtained 5000 Macca!

“Nee-san, this is…” You begin.

“I know what you’re thinking. You don’t have to pay me back.” Shizuka laughs. “Go on, take your lady friend out and enjoy yourselves.”

I'm sure our scheules will synch up soon. And then we can impress her with how strong we've gotten, so that will be nice.
>>
That wasn’t it, of course. You already had a fair amount of cash from exploring the Blackened Void. Then again, it might for the better if you kept your family in the dark about AETHER and its related shenanigans. You shudder to think how Shizuka would react, if she ever found out you were throwing yourself at Shadows on a semi-weekly basis.

“So, do you have any plans for the tour? Are you going to show off this district or head straight for the main attractions?”

“I don’t know.” You admit. “Celeste called me out of the blue. Guess I’ll have to think of something on the fly.”

You bid your sister goodbye and leave the apartment. Shizuka refuses to let you go without a closing remark and, with an amount of cheek that could turn a mischevious jester green with envy, cries out. “Tell me all about it when you get home!” You shake your head and slam your fist on the elevator panel to clear your mind.

Celeste is waiting at the bottom. The moment the elevator doors slide open, she rushes out to greet you.

“Takashi-kun! Over here!”

“Yo. Ready to go?”

“Definitely!”

Celeste is wearing the same outfit on that fateful day. Black vest with a shirt shirt and pleat crimson skirt. Long leather boots. Her usual oversized pair of headphones are resting upon her head, adorned with the markings of a pink butterfly. You catch the faint tunes of pop music blaring into her ears. She is sucking on a lollipop, as expected.

“So, how do I look?” she grins, as the two of you step out of the apartment building and into the sunlight.

It's weird that we can't, though. I was looking up ancient Japanese smith gods, because I'm a huge nerd, and most of them from Ameno Me-Hitotsu's period were female. He was one of the few that weren't. I wonder if that's why Ippon-Datara wears the maid outfit, because he's forgotten which one of the smith gods he was supposed to be and mistook himself for Ishikore-Dome or one of the other metalworking ladies.

You stare at her. Celeste is standing here, licking her lollipop with gusto, holding both her hands behind her back and grinning that carefree smile of hers.

“Decent, I guess. I’m not the type of guy to care what clothes I swear, so I have no bloody clue.” You respond. “You might be asking the wrong person here, Celeste.”

“I think you’re a good enough judge, Takashi-kun. You’re honest.” Celeste says. “Besides, if I look decent, then I’m not awful. And if I’m not awful, then I’m good! So it all works out in the end.”

“Seriously, what the hell was I supposed to say?” You ask. “Take off the boots and it’d almost pass for a school uniform.”

Celeste removes the lollipop from her mouth and sticks her tongue out. “You’re just jealous.” She teases. “It must be tough being a boy; not able to wear skirts that look this great.”

“Whatever you say.” You roll your eyes. “So, tour time. Got a place you want to go first?”

“Hmm, if possible I’d like to visit the first seven sectors in the city…” Celeste opens up a map of the city on her phone and shows it to you. “Do you have any suggestions, Takashi-kun?

“I didn’t prepare anything. You literally called me twenty minutes ago.”

You already understand this from your sixteen years of residence, but Akumachi-City is divided into ten sectors. The first district is placed in the center with the other nine surrounding it in a circle. Akumachi City isn’t as big of a tourist attraction as Kyoto or Shibuya, but nonetheless manages to attract a decent amount of people every year. Especially considering that this is the city where Kaede Kurusu once lived in. The districts are as follows:
>>
>>42338440
>“You’re just jealous.” She teases. “It must be tough being a boy; not able to wear skirts that look this great.”
She knows our secret. We can not let her leave this day alive.
>>
>>42338427
It was just in passing, not much more than a sentence or two.

>>
>>42338440

DEVIL’S HUB: District 1. The center of the city and the most affluent. It is home to all of the local megacorps: Kirijo, Nanjo, Hanamura and more. In that regard, its name is ironically appropriate. Come here if you want to experience streets metaphorically paved with money.

SILVER TOWN: District 2. A high class, residential zone where your school is built. If the rich aren’t living in the Devil’s Hub, then they’ll be here. The residences here are a bit more expensive and lavish compared to others elsewhere in the city. You will see expansive penthouses reserved for company executives and high-ranking personnel. Expect the fees to cost more than an arm and a leg, though.

SHAKEDOWN MARCH: District 3. The shopping district. Some of the city’s best shopping districts and largest malls are found here. Its name from the fact that the tendency to spend money is almost irresistible. A number of concerts also take place here. Very busy and loud. Keep a close eye on your wallet.

SYNTH CENTRAL: District 4. The entertainment sector of the city. It is like a miniature Akihabara, considered by many to be a shopping district for household electronic goods, games, anime and manga. Maid cafes are stationed here. It is deeply rooted in otaku culture and littered with fictional imagery. The name comes from the abundance of colored lights and synthesized music, giving the place a sort of neo-80’s vibe at night.

MOON’S EAST: District 5. A residential zone and where you live. This is where a great deal of Akumachi’s workforce resides. Its neighbor is District 6. There’s not much to look at here, except a notable park in the district’s center.

GAEA STADIUM: District 6. The second residential area. Another good portion of the workforce lives here. Its neighbor is District 5. Named after the famous Persona-duelling stadium in the middle of the district, which is probably the only location of note.

KURUSU SHRINES: District 7. The spiritual sector, designed to contain all the various types of religions that have sprung up in the 22nd century. This place is a bit more old-fashioned than the rest of the city, making it a prime choice for festivals. Named after the Last Word.

SPARK HILL, GREY WARD and the FALLEN DOWNTOWN are Districts 8, 9 and 10 respectively. You probably shouldn't go there, unless Celeste suddenly has a hankering for experimentation labs or being jumped on by gangs of thugs.

You mean you don't?
>>
>>42338949
No. The only time we got a new Persona for strengthening a Social Link was the Fool, and even that appears to have been a one-time thing. Every other one has just strengthened the existing Persona for that Arcana. Maybe we'll get new ones if we pass a threshold (I'd expect to at least get a new one at maximum rank), but we don't get one with each level.
>>
>>42338949
Of a certain type. Its great having 10 demons focused on physical damage when we run into someone with null physical.
>>
>>42338761
Anon, it's the opposite.

The only way to really have multiple max social links in a timely manner is to start them all early and to progress them evenly and slowly. Focusing is a good way to get nowhere fast as you max out one link in exclusion to progressing your other social links in a more natural pace.

>>42338949
No, we specifically don't. We only get new ones from new social links. Ranking links up improves those demons though, so it's even on that front.

This is definitely something we should get done soon. If for no other reason than because it would be good training.

What to choose? The center of the city, where the greed of the corporations is thick in the air? The shrines of the seventh district, where your predecessor once existed? Maybe the stadium of chaos, where man clashes against man and lets the magic fly. Or should you wander around Moon’s East and possibly bore your friend to tears?

“Ever been to Synth Central?” You ask.

“That’s the shopping district full of video games and anime, correct?” Celeste says. “It’s like the Electric Town from what I’ve heard.”

“More or less. It started from a few otaku stores and before people knew it, the place had grown into a mini Akihabara.” You mutter. “It’s even got those maids standing outside, handing out flyers to schmucks.”

“Didn’t that place get attacked by Shadows a couple weeks back?”

“Trying not to think about that, Celeste.” You reply. “It’s mostly back to shape, if the news if anything to be believed. Want to go there first?”

“I’m not the biggest fan of anime, but it sounds fun. Sure!”

And off the two of you go. Down into the train station, aboard the bullet train and towards your destination.
>>

Yep, completely forgot about those. Would be good, more training would be good before doing the next AETHER zone or the Abyss.

By the way, are we going to end up with a four-person party whenever we go into AETHER? A full party is probably absolutely necessary for the Abyss.

You pass through the gates and step out of the station and into the daylight. The streets are packed and stifling. Beats of synthwave and electrical guitars blare out of gigantic speakers, skimming between the skyscrapers and towers. Prints and images of fantasy world adorn the sides of buildings. The cry of a shocked anime girl rings through the fresh air. It’s a sound reminiscent of an unfortunate soul discovering an equally unfortunate male in the hot springs.

It’s been two weeks into the school year. Many a change has occurred in your young life. From malicious mobile applications to a new academy with a dangerous otherworld locked in between. Here you are, gazing into the world of the fetishistic and depraved, a Magician lady friend next to you. A grown man, dressed head to toe in official idol clothes, swaggers past you holding bags of goods. The roads of Synth Central possess a peculiar scent. It is one of strawberry cheesecakes, sweaty palms and plastic wrapping.

If only your mother could see you now. Actually socializing, with a girl no less! She would be so proud.

“The new NepGear V, only 41000 Macca. On sale now!” A promoter shouts, oblivious that the price is way too high for such a games console.

…why is that maid a boy? Who the hell does he think he is, dressing like a girl? What, is that supposed to attract patrons to this ‘Lovely Eight’ café? Ridiculous.

“We’re here!” Celeste cries out, cheerful and anticipating. “What shall we do now?”

“Let’s just walk around for a bit.” You say this, stretching your arms. “Synth Central is a pretty damn huge place.”

“Sounds good.” Celeste says. “Ooh, what’s that?”

Before you can bite out a reply, your orange-haired friend has dashed over to the side. Snarling under your breathe, you lean forwards and run to catch up with her. You find Celeste staring into an electronic store, her face practically squishing up against the hardened glass. Her eyes are sparkling with delight. She is enraptured at the bits and bobs of machinery on display.

“Wow…” She breathes. “I want this so badly!”

“What’s the big deal?” You ask, siding up to her. “They’re just headphones.”

“Just headphones?” Celeste whirls around, her expression full of distaste. “You don’t understand, Takashi-kun. These are limited brand Hanamura headphones. Maximum noise cancellation and comfort, and it even comes with a virtual keyboard too! Ahh, if only I had the money to buy a pair. This must be kami telling me I need to get a part time job already!”

“Are you going to freak out over the electronics department or are we having a tour here?”

Thus, you and Celeste travel around Synth Central. Past eroge fans, past cosplaying girls and past salary workers.

“Takashi-kun, come and play this game with me!”

“A crane game? Are you out of your mind? Those things suck up your money like a black hole!”

“Aw, but I want to try one…”

"Fine..."

You lost five times. Luckily, all the cash came out of Celeste's pocket.

You visit restaurants and cafes.

“Hmmm…”

You peer up at the short and violet haired maid. She is six feet tall and from the markings on her right hand, her arm isn’t made out of flesh and blood. “Can I help you?”

“That should be my line.” The maid replies. “Not you, then. Never mind.”

“Uh…?”

“Welcome to the Lovely Eight café. How may I service you, master?”

“Oh, don’t mind us, miss Decaux. We’re just looking around!” Celeste grins.

You make the silly decision of bringing Celeste to a video game store. She doesn’t even like video games. What were you thinking?

“Hey Takashi-kun. Isn’t this your predecessor?”

You baulk at the promotional poster on the wall. It’s a picture of Kaede Kurusu, staring up at the viewer with overly cute eyes. The title: ‘My Little Messiah Can’t Be This Adorable!’ followed by the tagline: ‘A dating sim starring Kaede Kurusu, genderbent Jesus, shota Joseph Stalin and more!’ is displayed proudly on the bottom.

This game is an abomination, you think to yourself. The horrifying thought is that somebody woke up one day and decided that the world lacked a dating sim emasculating historical figures from hundreds of years ago. Then he actually assembled a team and produced it!

“Y-yeah? What of it?”

“Do you like these sort of games?”

“What? Hell no!” You bark, a little too quickly.

“It must be odd, seeing her being displayed and marketed everywhere like this.”

“You think? A lot of things I’ve done in the past have taken a whole new terrifying perspective, Celeste.” You shiver. “Let’s leave.”

Celeste buys snacks, as expected.

“Mmmm, this is delicious!”

“I thought you might be a crepe person.”

“I am! I’m so glad I came here!” She takes another bite. “You don’t this sort of quality food in America.”

“Yeah, but that much custard and chocolate sauce? Will you be okay?” Your warning falls on death ears, because Celeste is busy chomping her way through the snack. You shrug and consume your own meal…

[12:30 pm, 17-Apr-2129 (SUNDAY)]

“We’re going to visit Shakedown Central.” You begin. “I mean, Shakedown March. Might as well grab lunch there.”

“May I pick the restaurant, then?” Celeste asks.

You shrug. “You’re the new girl. Go for it.”

The vivid colors and frantic beats of Synth Central vanish as you and Celeste exit. Your stomach rumbles, starving for a meal, as you board the train. You order it to quiet down. Celeste has finished licking her lollipop and has now moved onto chewing her way through a packet of bubblegum. A couple of minutes later, the crowded streets of Shakedown March burst into view.

Welcome to District 3 of Akumachi City: a war-zone hidden beneath the disguise of trendy designer clothes and massive shopping malls. Here, markets spring up, rise and fall. Perfumes and jewelry wink invitingly from their displays. Dresses are tried on, inspected and discarded without a single glance. Food courts bustle with the smells of meals and tired shoppers. Security guards prowl around the interiors. Catchy jingles worm through the ears of patrons, mass-designed to outstay their welcome as often as possible.

Two giants lurk in the open, Junes Department Store and Kiss-Shot. Eternal rivals, they combat each other through the usage of sales figures, marketing materials and possibly mercenaries if nutjobs on the Internet are anything to be believed. The former is targeted to the common man and the latter is geared towards the wealthy upper class. As you and Celeste walk through the streets, you hear the tune of Kiss-Shot:

“What you desire is what we shall grant.”

Said in a silky, husky European accent, apparently belonging to the voluptuous blonde mascot. You, and many others, were thankful the tune wasn’t as troublesome as Junes’s jingle. Every day is great at Junes, your ass! Not when the prices shoot up!

“This is stupidly appropriate, Celeste.” You announce as you enter her chosen restaurant. “And stereotypical, too.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Celeste winks and smiles as if butter wouldn’t melt.

“You know, I pegged you for a Japanese food enthusiast, what with how you freaked over the snacks in Synth Central.”

“I am.” Celeste says, driving her fork into her meal. “But there’s always time to appreciate a fine steak.”

“Which is why I said it was appropriate.” You take a bite of your meal. Well done steak, served with gravy and a side of potatoes and chives. “But this is really good. I haven’t had steak in a while.”

“Of course it is.” Celeste replies. “Aren’t you grateful?”

“Haha…”

The two of you eat lunch together, making small talk…

At the end of the meal, when the plates have been packed away by the waitress, Celeste asks you a question. “Hey Takashi-kun. What do you plan to do at Akumachi-Kirijo?”

“Pardon?”

“Do you have any goals? Plans for what you want to do at school?”

It’s a good question—one that you have not explored since AETHER crashed into your life and you attended Akumachi-Kirijo Academy. The past two weeks have merged into a haze of schoolwork, ghastly dreams, crushing Shadows and ethereal voices ringing through your head. Through it, you have struggled.

“I don’t know, to be honest.” You answer. “AETHER has made everything change so suddenly. Just surviving it all would be nice, I suppose.”

“Yeah, AETHER is a real pain.” Celeste remarks. “Still, you gotta have some motivation keeping you going, Takashi-kun! If you just pass through life, you’ll be kicked out of Akumachi-Kirijo in no time!”

“You think?” You raise an eyebrow. “Well, I did okay on my studies back in my old high school, so I might be able to do something about that. And there’s this whole dueling shtick running through my family…”

“Oh? Do tell more.” Celeste grins.

You sigh and explain. “Kaa-san and nee-san were both Persona dueling champions in their youth. There’s sort of an unspoken tradition within my family, stating that the women need to be powerful. I’ve always felt a bit of pressure to live up to their expectations. Maybe I should get myself involved in dueling too. Then again, I haven’t had my Persona for a very long time…”

“There you go! Aiming for top grades and becoming a dueling champion. Two fresh motivations straight from the oven!” Celeste chirps. “What more could you want?”

“You think I could become a dueling champion? Me?” You smirk at the absurdity of the statement.

“Why not, Takashi-kun?”

“It sounds bloody silly. People would laugh at me if I said out loud!”

“Takashi-kun, I wouldn’t laugh at you. And I don’t think it’s a bad goal to aim for.” Celeste speaks, some of humor fading from her voice. “If the potential lies within you, why not use it to the fullest? Ambition isn't a sin.”

Unless anyone decides to look up any information on us at all.
You know, like our official files that say "Persona User: Hermit"
>>
>>42343315
>>42343325
Unless the duel has any sensor-type Persona wielders watching, in which case they'd see us changing Arcana and know something weird was going on. I suppose we could stick to only using Hermit Personas or Personas with Disguise Hermit so that they can't see that, but since we only have one of those at the moment it doesn't seem practical.
>>
>>42343302
People would notice if we became the fucking avatar.

We won't be summoning any personas and if we'll keep using Hermit personas nobody with scan-type personas will fucking notice.

Also, speaking of scan-type persona wielders, anyone taking bets on who will be THE ONE for our party? I'd say that death arcana one.
>>
>>42343342
On the other hand, no one's actually seen us use our Persona yet. We could get away with using another one and claiming to have lied on the forms. It's a trick that could only work once, but it is an option.

>>42343389
It would be weird for one Persona to have access to so many magic types. Not impossible, but very suspect. At the very least they'd know we had something stronger than Ippon-Datara. Though like I said, we could say that we lied about that to have an advantage when we dueled.
>>
>>42343389
Yes they would.
Who the fuck wouldn't be suspicious of someone who can use fire, lightning, ice, earth, darkness, holy, and wind in their attacks? Plus, with people like Rise and Whatsherface who can scan it makes sense for scanners to be referees, who would catch on instantly
>>
>>42343437
Speaking of that we don't know how common they are and if they can scan people's arcana and not only shadows. From what I remember they used a machine to discover our arcana when we were a child.
>>
>>42343474
And what if they used it again?
>>
>>42343453

THAT'S IT
WE CAN BULLSHIT PEOPLE ABOUT US BEING JUDGEMENT ARCANA AND SINCE THEY DON'T KNOW DICK ABOUT IT NOBODY WILL NOTICE
>>
>>42343529
And are we judgement?
No.
And saying we lied on the application is liable to either get us kicked out or retested. Plus, we already got scanned as a child and the result was Hermit.

We need QM input on this, but it seems like any way we slice it we'd get found out easily.
Unless we stay away from official duels
>>
To the above: I'm planning on working an explanation into the story. Sorry, but could you please be a patient for a little longer? You will get your answer, I promise.
>>
>>42343571
School: Hey this guy said hermit on this application, was scanned as a hermit as a kid, but he's claiming to be a judgement, which is a very rare arcana now.
But he said it so he can't be lying, no need to retest him.
>>
>>42343453
No one would even suggest that we're a wild card and you know it. Wild Cards haven't surfaced in over fifty years, no one can pin us down if we don't show them our persona change. We can bullshit and dismiss all suspicion, since people's suspension of disbelief for this kind of thing isn't strong enough to buy into the idea of us being a Fool even if it's true.
>>
>>42343571
Everyone already thinks we're a Hermit though.
>>
>>42343453

“True… I guess dueling with others could help our chances of survival in the Blackened Void.” You wonder aloud. “Hmm, maybe I should ask nee-san about this…”

You sip a lemon-lime drink. Celeste taps her fingers on the hard tabletop and thinks.

“So, what about you? What are your ambitions?” You ask.

Celeste smirks. “I’m glad you asked.”

“Now I regret everything.” You joke.

“Too bad, Takashi-kun. Here comes the pain train!” Celeste takes the last gulp of her chocolate milk and leans across the table top. “Have you paid attention to the gossip around school?”

“No, not really.” You mutter. “Never maid attention to that sort of stuff.”

“You need to! That’s how a lot of important news leaks out. And junk too, but then you learn to filter the good from the bad. But now I’m getting off topic.” She smiles, an expression containing both eagerness and mischief. “Ever heard of Akumachi-Kirijo’s Elite Twelve?”

“Nope. Who are they?”

“The elite of the elite. The cream of crop in the academy. They are the best students, in terms of strength and smarts. The student council president, Eriko Ozaki, is number 1 out of 12.” Celeste’s grin has now become downright wicked. “One day, I will reach that summit.”

“Seriously?”

“Yep! I told my house as much when I spoke to them at the first meeting.” Celeste replies. “I told them I would surpass them and stand among the best. A lot of them were pissed off and shouted there was no way I would be able to achieve my ambitions. But honestly, their jeers only make me more determined to see it to the end.”

“If these Elite Twelve are as great as you describe, they’re probably monsters like kaa-san or worse.” You reply. “Are you sure you’ll be okay?”

“I’ll be fine. It’s nice to know you care so much, Takashi-kun.” Celeste smiles, this time generous and without malice. “Like I said, Akumachi-Kirijo wouldn’t be fun if I didn’t have a goal pushing me forward.”
>>
>>42343897
Best magician we know she will fail.
>>
>>42343951

>>
“Is there any reason why you want to reach such a lofty position?”

“It looks good on your resume.” Celeste winks. “Sounds strange, but it’s true! The Elite Twelve is officially recognized by the school. They get prizes at the end of year, too.”

“I guess that’s as good a reason as any." You sigh. "So what do you plan to do now?”

“Study, train and increase my reputation around school. That’ll do for now. If anyone challenges my ambition, then I’ll gladly fight them will all my strength! That is what I, Celeste Tachibana, have resolved to do!”

She declares this statement as loud as she can, in the midst of Shakedown March. You blink, a little taken aback. Is Celeste being too reckless here? She is walking down a path that will prick her will matter of thorns, but you can’t but root for her optimistic attitude? Did she have the strength of heart to stand up to the adversaries of the academy? Would she able to accomplish what she promised so dearly? Only time would tell…

“Gosh, that was so embarrassing!” Celeste’s face is now tinged with hints of crimson, and she’s staring at the table with a strained expression on her face. “I’ve never talked about this with anyone, never mind a boy my own age. Sorry!”

“It’s cool, it’s cool. What do you want for desert?”

“You’re offering? Then I want the nine-layered fruit parfait! The one with melon and ice-cream!”

“What! That costs a fortune! Pay it for yourself, damn it!”

“But I don’t have enough Macca…” Celeste whines.

“Just get the vanilla ice-cream, then!” You snap.

The tour around the city resumes. Bellies full, it’s time to continue walking around the city. You take Celeste to the Gaea Stadium…

“It’s closed! What a shame…”

…Kurusu Shrines…

“Takashi-kun, who are those people squabbling in the park?”

“Order of the White Messiah and the Ring of Deva. They’re worshippers of the Last Word. Let’s not go near them.”

“Is this a situation like the Catholic and the Protestant Churches?”

“The Order of the White Messiah believes Kurusu to be a figure who will lead humanity toward a golden age. The Ring of Deva reveres Kurusu as a war goddess who will smite the earth of the unworthy and create a paradise ruled by strength. They’re both complete nutjobs and I don’t want anything to do with them!”

…and finally back to Moon’s East….

The sun is beginning to set, casting rays of orange light across the sky. You stand at the bottom floor of your apartment block with Celeste. The two of you are tired and worn from marching through the concrete roads and visiting the sights of the city, but nonetheless satisfied.

“I had fun today, Takashi-kun! Thank you for showing me around.”

“You don’t have to act so…formal. It was nothing.” You reply. “Gotta admit, this is the first time I’ve walked around the city so much. You might’ve done me a solid, Celeste.”

“Really? That’s wonderful.” She grins. “I really did make the right choice in coming to Akumachi City.”

“As opposed to Tokyo?” You smirk. “You know, we didn’t cover all of the sights today.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah. We didn’t go to the Devil’s Hub or the Silver Town.”

“Then can I expect you to show me around again, Takashi-kun?” Celeste winks.

You shake your head but smile. “Just give me more notice, okay? But yeah, I’m up for it.” The two of you enter the elevator and ride all the way up to your floor. You turn to Celeste.

“See you at school, then.”

“Yep! See you tomorrow!”

>>Switch to Takashi…

[7:00 pm, 17-Apr-2129 (SUNDAY)]

“I’m back!”

“Welcome home, Takashi!” Shizuka voice sounds. You take off your trainers and exchange them for a pair of slippers. “How was the trip?”

“It was fine.” You say. You head to the kitchen and pour yourself a glass of juice. The cool, refreshing liquid is heaven towards your parched throat.

Shizuka pokes her head out from the kitchen, a carefree grin on her sleepy features. “Did anything—”

“No. I told you, no.”

“Aw.” Shizuka pouts and returns to cooking dinner.

Said dinner passes by rather smoothly. Soup, fish and rice. Shizuka grills you on questions about your day and you answer them simply.

“A shame you didn’t take her to Kohryu’s Hoard in Devil’s Hub or Thousand Cranes in the Silver Town.”

“Would Celeste be interested in a fancy casino or an arts center?”

“It wouldn’t hurt to try, Takashi…”

After the meals have been devoured and the dishes shoved into the washing machine for a cycle of detergent and filtered water, Shizuka slumps herself down on the couch and flips on the television.

“And now, there will showers all week, so ready your umbrellas, folks…”

Oh yeah, that’s right. Your nee-san has breaks on Saturday and Sunday nights. On Saturday she usually passes the time with one of her favourite hobbies: napping. But on Sunday, she’s free to do anything she wishes…

>>Talk to Shizuka.

You look in the direction of you room, then turn to your sister sitting on the couch. The channel has been flipped to a stand-up comedy duo. Shizuka is giggling and snorting at the antics on stage. She looks so casual right now, relaxing in her home with a cold drink. And yet, her job is to help fight an endless enemy born from the human heart. Five nights a week, she dresses in body armor, arms herself with weaponry and travels outside the city walls to combat the Shadows. The job of an Anti-Shadow Operative was one with the prospect death constantly hanging above. Shizuka perishing was almost unimaginable in your eyes. But nonetheless, it was still possible.

She fought on anyway, for the sake of the Wakui family. A tightness gathers in your chest. Maybe, now that you have been fighting Shadows for real, you can empathize with her more…

“Looks like you’re going to be busy all week.” You state, taking a seat next to her.

“I will be. Looks like your beloved nee-san will be spending a lot of overtime in the near future.” Shizuka gives you a wry grin. “You don’t mind, do you?”

“Nah.” You dismiss the notion with a wave of your hand. “Just buy a couple of meal packs and I’ll heat them up on my own.”

“Those are unhealthy, Takashi. I’ll prepare something in advance.” Shizuka says. “By the way, this is quite sudden.”

“What do you mean?”

“You and I haven’t been spending much time recently. I’m not complaining, but did something happen?”

This isn't the time though. And we can't take non-players into Aether either, so demonstrating anything isn't an option.

Asking her for training may help for school dueling. Probably not so much in Aether where we're juggling personas

Additionally, receiving training from her will eat into the spare time we have.

No it isn't, we've meant to ask about training for some time and she asked if anythings happened. If we leave it at that, we go back to our room without having trained Augmentation or made any arrangements to spend time training with nee-san.
>>
>>42345924
Except you know, talking to her which will let us bring it up and making sound like we're using her. Because how she was talking was we basically ignore her until we need something.
>>
>>42345843
>>42345924
Our relationship with our older sister will only continue to decay as we avoid the subject and isolate ourselves from her.

“I just wanted to talk. Nothing’s wrong.” You respond. “Have I really been spending so much time away from you that wanting to talk to you is usual? I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize.” Shizuka smiles. “Part of it is my fault, too, with my job. I’m quite happy to chat with you.”

“Thanks.” You say. “What are you watching?”

“Oh, nothing in particular. The one I want to watch won’t come on until later. I’m just passing time.”

“Another cheesy romance flick? Same as usual, heh.”

You and Shizuka watch the television in silence. The scene transitions into one starring a young girl having her birthday. Her parents cheer and claps as the girl blows out the candles. Shizuka’s eyes shimmer. She turns to you. “Takashi, this reminds me of your eighth birthday.”

“The one where Daisuke and the others came along? With the chocolate cake and everything.”

“Yes, that one. You accidentally announced your wish to everyone. It was quite the scene.” Shizuka says. “Do you remember what it was?”

“Not really, no.” You mutter. “Sorry.”

“I see. It’s not your fault, Takashi.” Shizuka murmurs.

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t worry about it.” Shizuka’s smile is now warm. She reaches out and pats your head fondly, rubbing her palm against your messy dark hair. “How’s your new school treating you?”

“Good, I guess. There’s been a lot to take in.” You reply. “I’m having a hard time collecting my thoughts sometimes.”

“You made friends, haven’t you? I’m glad.”

“Yeah. Celeste, Takauji and Akikazu. Maybe that Kaz Inaba guy as well.”

“Akikazu? Never heard that name before.”

“Akikazu is a guy in my class. Blonde hair, really rough but I think he’s a good person deep down. Skips class a lot.”

“Sounds like Daisuke back in the day!” Shizuka comments, chortling. “History must be repeating, then.”

The scene on the television then switches to a martial arts fight between a Chinese guy and a heavily bound wrestler.

“Nee-san, didn’t we agree we would train some time?”

“We did, yes. I’m glad you remembered. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of time tonight. Maybe next week, my cute little brother?”

“Ugh, don’t call me that. It’s too embarrassing, nee-san…”

“For all your talk, you don’t seem to be resisting much.” Shizuka giggles. “That’s why I’m tussling your hair right now.”

“Stop it then…”

“Hee hee.” Shizuka lets go. “You’ll be dueling soon, won’t you? It’s Akumachi-Kirijo, after all.”

“Maybe. Celeste and I talked about it today.”

“Good thing your nee-san is a former under-18s champion, then!” Shizuka laughs. “Make sure you read the rules about what’s allowed and what’s illegal. And always remember that you can back out if you wish. Dueling is never mandatory in high schools.”

“Are you that concerned?”

“Kaa-san was towards me.”

“Seriously?”

“You might have forgotten already, but kaa-san would always send me texts and video clips of herself before I had matches. They were short and straight to the point, almost to a fault, but I knew she was concerned for my wellbeing. As am I towards you, Takashi. People get hurt in dueling. I think it’s a good sport and fun to participate in, but I want you to be aware of the risks.”

“Won’t healing magic just restore me to the way I used to be?”

“I know, but I can’t help but worry.” She gives you another smile. “I’m your older sister, after all.”

“…thanks, nee-san.”

“You’re welcome, Takashi.”

“Why are you holding my hand?”

“Because we’re family. Why else?”

“…ah, whatever. I don’t care.”

“Don’t pretend you don’t enjoy it, my cute little brother.”

Oh, NOW it shows us.
>>
>>42346037
Fuck yeah. That's three new Personas to pick out next time we're in the Velvet Room. Also, nee-san Social Link, yay! Best big sister. Here's hoping her bro-con doesn't get weird as we advance that link.
>>
>>42346037
Well our sister is going to get sucked into AETHER, this oughta be fun. Given how strong she is she'll likely be one of the last taken.

Calling it, sister's gonna get sucked into AETHER with us pulling ALL THE STOPS to save her.
>>
>>42346079
Actually, now that I think about it, the gate to AETHER has the Arcana for each of the players on a sign above it. Couldn't we use that to rule out what Social Links we form that won't be at risk of being taken? Like, if there's no Tower there we can rest safely knowing that any Towers we make friends with won't get drawn in.
>>
>>42346037
WELP, here's hoping she does/doesn't get stuck in AETHER with us
>>
>>42346117
>Tower
>Social link

What does that consist of? A complete and utter mess who's life continually is in flux?

Sounds more like us than Hermit.
>>
I bet the AETHER is a training program to create another Last Word. Possibly created by Kaede.
>>
>>42346117
If that's the case she's either the special bonus level abductee, or she'll join the party once the game gets out of Beta and Everyone can(must) play it.
>>
>>42346079
>>42346110
>>42346117
>>42346120
She'll end up being one of the last, if not the last to fall in. The later it hits, the bigger the fallout with be afterwards.
>>
>>42346163
>implying that the last person sucked into AETHER won't be our mother.
>>
>>42346139
Pretty much, yeah. P3 had an old drunken monk who had driven away the people he loved with his alcoholism, and P4 had a kid who had ruined his reputation and academic success by cheating on a major test. They're ultimately uplifting, since you don't get to max out a link without them experiencing personal growth, but still kind of rough for them on the way there.

It's gonna be one of those scenes where Shizuka slugs Takashi in the jaw and cries her eyes out because he didn't tell her sooner and kept everything a secret, thinking he didn't trust his big sister.

It's gonna happen.

[Nine years ago…]

“Kaa-san…kaa-san…”

Your mother, youthful yet weary, looks up from her coffee on the dining room table. Laid out in front of her is her tablet, the screen displaying words your young mind cannot comprehend. Charts and graphs full of nonsense that make your little brain hurt. Walls and walls of text, like the a great blockade in front of a platoon of knights.

“What is it, Takashi?” Your mother asks, looking straight at you.

You clutch your Jack Frost doll tightly. “Bedtime story.” You mumble.

“Ah, yes. It’s tonight, isn’t it? I’m sorry I forgot.” With that sentence, Rumi Wakui takes her tablet and rises to her feet. “Go to your bedroom. I’ll be there in a moment.”

“Okay!” You run back to your room and dive under the covers. The bedside lamp is on. You snuggle in your bed and wait patiently for your mother to arrive. She does so quickly, much to your delight.

“What shall I read today, Takashi?” Your mother opens a series of e-book on her device and sits down on a chair beside the bed. “It’s up to you.”

“The one about the angel!” You cry out.
>>
“Again?” A small grin snakes its way up your mother’s features. “You really enjoy the story, don’t you?”

“Yes, kaa-san. My next favourite story is one about the blue-haired warrior. Then it's the pink alligator!” You say. “But the story about the angel is the best!”

“Then I won’t keep you waiting.” Your mother selects the e-book and opens her mouth. “Once upon a time, there was a young girl. She was almost a grown up and about to celebrate her birthday. Though she had no knowledge of it at the time, her very own adventure would about to begin…”

You listen, enraptured, by your mother’s soothing voice until your eyelids fall shut and you descend into the world of dreams. You sleep away, now oblivious to the world around you. Your mother rearranges the covers and turns off the land.

She turns to leave, then hesitates at the doorframe. After contemplating, she returns to the side of the bed. Then she leans forward and kisses you on the cheek.

“Sleep well, my son…”

It is dark. No-one can see her actions.

Well, Veleis-sensei knew her as a kid, so unless the Last Word could shapeshift it's not likely that she was able to pass herself off as a student at the school. But then again, for all we know she can shapeshift. All I know for sure is that if you're right, that doujin we read earlier is retroactively horrifying.
