You are Lieutenant Commander Sonali Vasusena, N7 and Aspiring Spectre. After your “successful” assault on the Pirate Haven of Cascora, you were down three squadmates. On the bright side, you were offered a position in the Council’s Office of SPEcial Tactics and REconnaissance. Leaping at the chance, you spent the next few days doing research, filling out paperwork and trying to deal with your Third-In-Command’s mental breakdown. It’s now February 4th, 2184 and you just finished beating up your Commanding Officer and granting Inari’s request that she be taken off of active duty.
_

The Trenton makes a final approach to the Citadel and you get a good long first look at the center of galactic society. It’s huge. Massive. It dwarfs anything that humanity has ever built. The five arms, each dozens of kilometers in length and width, stretch out across the viewscreen as the ship flies towards the Presidium ring at the center of the station. You can make out the buildings and ships that fly between them as well as some of the scars left from the Battle of the Citadel. It’s pretty amazing despite the damage, you admit to yourself.

As the frigate touches down to the docking berth, you check yourself over. You’ve equipped your Omni-tool and Amp as usual for every time you leave the ship and put on your Officer’s Uniform as well. Under your jacket, you’ve slotted your pistol in a shoulder holster, making sure it’s within easy reach. Citadel Security has apparently been cracking down on weapons but you should be fine.

As you walk towards the airlock, you see that Leo is leaning against the door, reading something on his omni-tool. He’s wearing a leather jacket with the N7 symbol emblazoned over the heart as well as a white t-shirt and jeans. Looking up as you approach, he smiles and deactivates his tool.

“Looking Spiffy Commander,” he greets you. “Just wanted to wish you luck before you left.”

“Thanks,” you respond, the corner of your mouth quirking upwards slightly. “But I think I’ll be fine.”

The LT shrugs as he pushes off of the door and steps to the side, “You never know when you might need it.”

You roll your eyes in response as you step into the airlock. “I’ll see you later.”

“See ya later,” he echoes as the door closes.

A (relatively) short elevator ride later, you enter the Human Embassy in the Citadel’s Presidium. You were a little surprised by the sheer amount of greenery and luxury that the Presidium displayed, especially on a space station. Clearly, the Protheans did an excellent job in building the massive station.

Upon giving your name to the Receptionist VI, wou were immediately ushered in to the Councilor’s office, where David Anderson and Donnel Udina awaited you.

The former Captain stands up as you enter, “Welcome Commander. It’s good to have you with us.”

The Ambassador gestures to the chair next to him, “Please sit, we’ve got a bit to cover before our meeting with the Council.”

Easing into the rather comfortable armchair, you take a quick look around Anderson’s office. The decor is spartan, and all the colors are muted, mainly variations of white and grey. There’s a few plaques on the wall all commendations for various military actions, as well as a picture frame on his desk, turned away from you.

“How are you feeling?” Anderson asks as he sits back down. “Has it really sunk in yet?”

“Mostly,” You reply, sinking back into your seat a bit. “It really sounds like being an N7, except with more bosses to report to. How long does it take most people to adjust to becoming a Spectre anyways?”

Anderson chuckles, “The big differences will show up as soon as we have you appointed. As for your question, Shepard accepted the position and responsibilities pretty much instantly.”

You nod, processing that info while Udina pulls a datapad out of his pocket, “We forwarded the footage from your helmet cams to the Council and, after going over it, they’ve agreed to hold a hearing to interview you for themselves. Normally, a senior Spectre would handle the evaluation, but most of them were killed during the Battle of the Citadel so the Council will be handling your case personally.”

Well, that’s a bit unexpected, but you think you understand.

“Each of the Councilors will have their own priorities when interviewing you,” Anderson adds in. “But Tevos and Valern aren’t likely to be antagonistic in their questioning.”

>[Cont.]

>>42340304

Udina nods in agreement, “But let us worry about that. You should focus on what they’ll be asking you about. Valern will likely try to evaluate your mental state and if you’re a good fit for the position. Tevos will likely see if you can keep the peace, which translates to maintaining the status quo. Sparatus, on the other hand, will likely needle you on anything he can find, including subjects you are sensitive about.”

“Any questions?” Anderson asks. “Or should we move on to strategy?”

You think for a moment before realizing something important. “Yes sir, something I just realized. What happens after I become a Spectre? How will it affect me in my duties for the Alliance and what is expected of me if I run into any conflicts of interest?"

Anderson sighs as he leans back in his chair, steepling his hands in front of him. “That’s a good question Commander. Officially, the only authority that can command the Spectres is the Council.”

You frown, “And unofficially?”

“It’s much more complicated,” Udina answers instead. “The chain of command becomes… muddled, depending on the race in question.”

“Salarian Spectres are almost always former STG Operatives and there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that they’re still loyal to the Union over the Council,” Anderson says. “On the other end of the spectrum, you have the Asari, who generally seem to choose Spectres with no previous attachments and have them swear loyalty to the Council. It’s far more effective than it would seem.”

“Turian Spectres have a tendency to vary wildly in their loyalties. It’s mainly due to the Oaths they swear,” Anderson continues. “Some hold the Oaths sworn to the Hierarchy over the Council and some go the other way. And some find that abandoning their Oaths to the Hierarchy makes their Oaths to the Council meaningless.”

“... And Shepard?” You ask.

Anderson stands up and walks towards the balcony that overlooks the Presidium, crossing his hands behind his back. For a moment, he looks very tired.

“Shepard’s Position was something we played loose and fast with,” He says as he turns around, piercing you with his steely gaze. “On paper, she maintained the same rank within the Alliance, but in practice, she was outside the chain of command. As for conflicts of interest…”

He walks over to a crystal decanter on a shelf set into the wall near his desk and pours himself a glass of an amber liquid. Taking a sip, he begins to speak again.

“You’re aware how Shepard ordered 1st, 3rd and 5th Fleets to save the Destiny Ascension during the Battle of the Citadel?” Anderson asks as he stares at the picture frame on his desk. “Well, the fallout from that is still being felt heavily. Some humans feel that it was a betrayal, sending our soldiers to die for aliens. And yet, our relationship with the other Council Species has never been stronger. We’ve received invitations to cross-train with other militaries. Violence against human civilians in Council Space is at an all time low. The Turian Primarch himself gave a speech at Shepard’s Memorial.”

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42342186

He looks at you again, “Shepard thought she made the right decision. And I’m having a hard time disagreeing with her. All I can say Commander, is that if you’re in a position where your loyalties are in conflict, that you’ll do the right thing.”

“Can I trust you to do that?”

“Sir,” you say as you stand up, matching Anderson’s gaze with your own. “I don’t always know what the right thing is, but damned if I can’t promise you that I’ll do my uniform proud.”

Anderson smiles, “I hold you to that Commander.”

Udina clears his throat, drawing attention back to him, “Now, there’s a few things I must stress before you meet with the Council. It’s very important that you maintain a level of proper decorum. While hostility is allowable, it’s extremely important that you do not lose your temper. In addition, insulting the Councilors will only make you seem petty. Do NOT let them put you on the back foot with their questions, it’s very important that you stand your ground without being too defensive.”

“Now, we will be meeting the Council for a private Hearing, before moving to a more public setting for your appointment. That is, IF you are appointed,” Udina looks up from his datapad. “Any last minute questions? Or should we leave now?”

>>
Taking another moment to think, you find a good question to ask. “Is there anything in particular the Council would attack me with or use against me?"

Anderson and Udina exchange a look, before the latter brings his Omni-tool up and scrolls through several files, “I believe I noticed a few items on your file. Ah, here they are.”

He clears his throat, “You were born on Shanxi and you actually lost your mother due to the actions of the Turians. Sparatus will likely ask you if you harbor any resentment towards them for it. Your…unfortunate home situation will likely be a concern for Tevos and she will definitely ask you about it. All of them will likely question you about Operation Nightfall, so be prepared to defend your actions there.”

“That’s all,” Udina finishes. “We should be going,”

You nod, processing the info and falling into step behind the Ambassador as he leads the way, the Councilor walking up to stand next to you. Those are some heavy topics they brought up. You hope you have some good answers.

The Citadel Tower stands at the Heart of the Presidium pointing out to the void between the arms. While the outside is a beautiful alabaster edifice, the inside is darker and decorated with plant life and fountains. Of course, your trained eye picks out how the chokepoints and sniper nests are hidden within the elaborate dressings. Beneath the glass floor under your feet, an impressive garden filled with luminescent trees and grass. You’ve heard that’s where Shepard battled Saren for control of the Citadel.

The Councilor leads you to a small alcove near the Petitioner's Stand, guarded by a pair of Turians in C-Sec armor. Nodding to the guards, he presses his hand against a panel set into the wall. There’s a slight humming sound and the door hidden in the wall opens, revealing a small hallway.

“It’s me and you from here Commander,” Anderson says as he enters the opening.

Following him, leads you down to another door behind a guard post manned by a pair of Asari. They scan both of you with their Omni-tools and request that you leave all your equipment with them. Reluctantly, you acquiesce and surrender your pistol, Omni-tool, and Biotic Amp. Anderson approaches the wall where a small security suite scans his hands, eyes, and voice before opening.

>>42344570

Inside, you see a relatively sparsely decorated conference room with a single table with four seats against the far wall and a smaller table with another chair set facing it. Three of the seats are occupied, the first by a statuesque Asari Matriarch with white markings across her face and scalp, the second by an older Turian with pale tattoos running across his mandibles, cheeks and forehead and the last by a salarian in a hooded robe. All of them turn to look at you as you enter the room.

Tevos is the first to act, “Greetings Councilor Anderson and Commander Vasusena.” You’re surprised that she didn’t mess your name up, but seeing as she’s had centuries as a diplomat, you guess it’s not that unusual.

Sparatus nods towards you, “Take a seat, we have much to discuss.”

You glance at Anderson and he gives you a reassuring nod before moving to take the last seat on the far left of the Council’s table. Following his example, you take the last chair in the room, facing those who will decide your fate.

>>42344598

Sparatus leans forward, resting his arms on the table, “As you know, we are evaluating you, Lieutenant Commander Sonali Vasusena” (Ha, he stumbled over it.) “for the position of an Agent of the Office of Special Tactics and Reconnaissance.”

“I must admit, it has been a very long time since these particular protocols have been used when selecting a Spectre,” Valern adds, what must be amusement tugging at his lips. “But times are changing, as your people say.”

Your senses are particularly sharp today, picking out some of the strangest details as you study the Councilors. The way Valern sits, the twitch of Sparatus’s mandibles, Tevos’s breathing, the clench of Anderson’s jaw, they and a myriad of other actions all speak to your instincts, telling a story.

Anderson is stressed and tired, and everything seems to grate on him. He’s uncomfortable, he doesn’t want to be here.

Tevos is sad and, oddly enough, afraid, although she hides it very well. She is upset, and it’s only getting worse.

Sparatus is calm and composed, but undercurrents of impatience and anger can be felt. He doesn’t want to be here either, but out of desire to act, rather than stress.

Valern is the only one who seems to be in good spirits. He’s happy, downright ecstatic, because he’s so busy and it makes him feel young.

Tevos speaks then, “Recent times have been particularly momentous, what with an attack on the Citadel itself and a new species joining the Council. Truly, we live in interesting times. Now, as all of the Councilors have read up on you, we can pass over the lesser details and start with what matters most. The first question we pose to you is thus: What do you believe the Spectres are, Sonali Vasusena? What do they stand for? What does being a Spectre mean?”

The Spectres are both a potent symbol and a tool. For those that can operate openly, they are beacons, shining the way into the darkness to bring criminals to task and to save the ignored.

And as a tool, the Spectres are troubleshooters. Armed with the authority to reach past layers of law and protocol to settle and ease potentially disruptive situations before they erupt.

Being a Spectre means stepping past the constraints of one's race. A Spectre serves the council and all sentient beings in council space and all must be treated fairly. It means being willing to stand under the harshest scrutiny, to be a beacon of hope, to stand for the very principles enthused by the Council, if not its laws whenever possible."

I maintain that the citadel is actually just a giant, lazy reaper who couldn't be bothered to actively do anything. So they made it a passive agent in their mission.

>>42345517

For a few moments, you sit and think, carefully turning the question over in your head. You remember Shepard and Saren and the legacies they left behind. That’s when your answer comes to you.

“Spectres,” You begin. “Are Symbols… and Tools.”
Sparatus tilts his head slightly, an expression of interest for Turians.

“They’re beacons,” You continue, looking directly at Tevos. “Shining the way into the darkness to bring criminals to task and to save the ignored.”

“They’re troubleshooters, armed with the authority to reach past layers of law and protocol to settle and ease conflicts before they erupt,” You say as you switch your gaze to Valern. “They take the initiative to do what needs to be done, no matter what stands in the way.”

“Being a Spectre means stepping past the constraints of one's race.” Now you look at Sparatus. “A Spectre serves the Council and all sapient beings in Council Space. All must be treated fairly. It means being willing to stand under the harshest scrutiny, to be a beacon of hope, to stand for the very principles enthused by the Council, if not its laws whenever possible."

She tries to hide it, but the ghost of a smile graces Tevos’s face as you finish your speech. She’s clearly pleased at your answer. To a lesser extent, Valern is also appreciative of your answer although he shows no real outward signs of it. Sparatus, however, shows signs of concern and begins to speak.

“While you talk of serving all species in Council Space, I have to question whether or not you are actually willing to do so.”

Oh, here it comes.

“You were born on the colony of Shanxi and lost your mother due to the Relay 314 Incident,” he continues, his yellow eyes gleaming darkly as he stares at you. “How do we know that you do not hold any resentment towards Turians? Would your feelings towards any other aliens interfere with performing your duties as a Spectre?”

>Response?
>>
>>42346056

"It would be lie to say it did not hurt. The loss of my mother hurt deeply but what hurt me further was my father's actions after the siege was lifted. My mother died of her circumstances during the siege, my father chose to ignore his when the war ended.

I cannot begrudge an entire race for the actions of a few, especially those who were just doing their sworn duties. I do not expect be able to enjoy a drink and a night out with turians who served in the first contact war but I will not transfer such feelings and bring them onto an entire race. "
>>
>>42346296

Let's hold off on mentioning our Dad for now but keep that our mom's death hurt.

I'd also say take out begrudge and sworn and shorten the latter part to "wouldn't be friends with" instead.
>>
You take a deep breath and let it out. It’s a touchy subject, you admit, but you’ve had a lot of time to think it over and you know your answer.

“"It would be a lie to say that the loss of my mother did not hurt deeply,” You reply calmly, meeting Sparatus’s eyes with your own. “But I can’t hold the actions of a few soldiers who were doing their duties against an entire race. I probably wouldn’t be friends with the Turians that fought in the First Contact War, but I will not transfer those feelings over to the rest of the Turian people.”

Sparatus leans back in his chair, apparently satisfied with your answer. You can see Tevos and Valern relax slightly next to him.

You turn to look at Valern, expecting the next question to come from him but he shakes his head. “I have no questions that have not already been answered,” He says simply.

“In that case,” Tevos says, “I will ask one more question. You grew up in a home that was broken, in more ways than one. It would have been a difficult childhood, one that would undoubtedly leave many scars. What I would like to know is, how has that experience affected your life? Have you moved past it or do those memories still haunt you?”

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42346757

You silently clench your teeth as those memories come back. Oh, they haunt you alright. But they’ve given you quite a bit as well. To gauge your Father's mercurial moods, you learned to read him like a book, something that has benefited you throughout your life. But that's not all you gained.

“I admit that I had a… difficult childhood,” You reply, leaning back in your chair and crossing your arms. “Some of those memories still haunt me today. But those experiences are what made me who I am. And, for that, I will accept my past for what it is. The past.”

There’s a small sense of approval from Tevos echoed vaguely by Sparatus. Valern shows no difference. However, Anderson radiates strong approval and you feel a bit proud of yourself.

“Very well then,” Tevos says, standing up from her chair. “I believe we have a decision to make?”

“Indeed we do,” Anderson says, rising in time with Sparatus and Valern.

“Commander, please wait at the Petitioner’s Stand,” Valern instructs. “We will inform you of our decision soon.”
_
The wait is a little nerve-wracking, but you do your best not to let it show. Patience is something you can manage, even if you do want to expend some of that nervous energy you have stored. Finally, you hear footsteps and see the Councilors approach their podiums.

“Lieutenant Commander Sonali Vasusena, step forward,” Tevos says, command infusing her dulcet tones.

You do so, looking up at the Council’s dais, apprehension clawing at your stomach but hidden from view.

Tevos speaks again, "It is the decision of the Council that you be granted all the rights and privileges of the Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Branch of the Citadel."

Valern continues, "Spectres are not trained, but chosen. Individuals forged in the fire of service and battle; those whose actions lift them above the rank and file."

Sparatus takes over, "Spectres are an ideal, a symbol, the embodiment of courage, determination, and self-reliance. They are the right hand of the Council, instruments of our will."

Anderson concludes, "Spectres bear a great burden. Both our first and last line of defence, our Protectors and Avengers, Shields and Sword. The safety of the galaxy is theirs, and now yours, to uphold.”

“Sonali Vasusena, you are a Spectre.”

Applause rains down from the balconies, as you step down from the Petitioners’ Stand. You’re a Spectre now. Holy hell.

Out of the corner of your eye you spot several camera drones orbiting the room, most of them trained on you. Oh, wow, you’re probably going to be on the news. Nearby, you can see Ambassador Udina making his way towards you, a worried look twisting his face.

“We have reporters clamoring to interview you,” He mutters as he gets within earshot. “Do you want to deal with them now, or later?”

You take a deep breath, “May as well get this over with, huh?”
_

There’s a throng of reporters of the various races crowding the steps outside the Council Tower. If it weren’t for the C-Sec officers keeping them back, they’d have likely mobbed you as soon as you walked out the door. As it is, their shouting only grows louder as they catch sight of you.

Udina sighs as he observes the crowd and mutters “How do they get here so quickly?” to himself.

Stepping forward, he raises his hands and calls for silence, eventually getting them to quiet down. “The Commander is willing to answer several questions before she leaves.”
Immediately, several reporters start shouting out queries, none of which you actually manage to make out. Udina raises his hands again and this time they quiet down practically instantaneously.

“Please raise your hand and the Commander will decide who she talks to,” he says as he steps back. Giving you a look, he gestures for you to choose.

Stepping forward, you choose:

>The Asian woman in a low-cut pink dress
>A Turian in black formal attire
>An Asari in a catsuit with large swathes missing
>A Salarian in what appears to be a light hardsuit

>An Asari in a catsuit with large swathes missing
She's clearly the actual Spectre, hiding in plain sight. The Turian and the Salarian look too professional, and there's only two human Spectres - one of them is dead, and the other is you.
>>
You point at the Turian, “How about you?”

The Turian, a female judging from the lack of crest and larger mandibles, steps forward while a small red camera drone darting forward out of the swarm that circles overhead. “Rystra Andal, Hierarchy News Network. Judging from your uniform, you’re an Officer in the Alliance Navy. Could you share your background and why you were chosen to be Humanity’s Second Spectre?”

Placing your arms behind your back, you look directly at the reporter, “I was born on Shanxi, and enlisted in the Alliance Marine Corps. I was later invited to join Special Forces and became an N7. I’ve served in combat zones across the galaxy and have received training in frontline, technical, and Biotic combat.”

“As for why I was chosen,” You look up at the drone and give a winning smile. “The same reason that all Spectres are chosen. I can get the job done.”

Rystra nods and seems satisfied with her answer, which seems to spur a larger number of reporters to raise their hands.

Alright, calm down Sonali, and think. What’s the best way to address this kind of question? It’s pretty clear that she works for a gossip mag or a tabloid or something. A part of you wonders how she managed to get out here in the first place with those credentials, but you push that thought to the side. Publishing like that is just looking for something that’ll hook new readers. You’re getting the sense that she’s looking for something interesting or sexy. It would make sense, since you’re such a high profile person right now. So, you can indulge her and give some sort of tidbit that would make you endearing.

Although, the feeling you’re getting from Udina is extreme apprehension. It doesn’t seem like he wants you to answer the question seriously. And your gut agrees.

“Yes, I’ve had time but anything more than that is private, Ms. Chataya.” You force a little amusement into your voice and chuckle once. “After all, a girl’s gotta have her secrets.”

That draws a slight rumble of laughter from the assembled crowd and you think Udina has relaxed a bit. Monara seems satisfied and thanks you before stepping back into the crowd. You really hope that Maidens’ Press doesn’t make you look too bad.

“You, sir, in the back,” you point to the lone Batarian in the crowd. “I’ll take your question.”

The Batarian clears his throat, coughing several times as he does, before speaking in a rough, basso voice, “I am Kar Foro from the Voice of the Emperor.”

Huh, figures that the Batarians would have at least one reporter on the Citadel now that the rest of them have pulled out.

“I ask you, Commander, if you can truly be trusted to perform your duty as a Spectre and serve ALL the species of the Galaxy,” he says, hostility infusing his tone. “You are from Shanxi, the site of what you humans refer to as ‘The First Contact War’. It is said that your own mother was one of the casualties that occurred in the aftermath of that conflict. How can the races of the Citadel be certain that you do not harbor hatred for Turians or other aliens? How can they be sure you will not abuse your power?”

Yeah, you had a feeling there would be at least one attack on you, although the source is certainly surprising. Although, it does make sense. The Batarians were pretty much persona non-grata after that attempted assassination of the Council a few months ago. Figures they’d have agents sowing discord in Citadel.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42367829

Looking at the crowd, you can see that the new information does have some effect. A bit of nervous uncertainty has replaced the vaguely positive feelings they had before. It’s one thing to convince the Council of your feelings on non-humans. It’s another to convince the Galaxy. You’re going to have to inspire them.

You pause for moment, collecting your thoughts and feelings before putting them together in words.

“I would be lying if I said the First Contact War is not a sore spot for humanity or that the death of my mother hasn't affected me,” You say as you meet Kar Foro’s lower eyes, one’s Batarians use for social interaction. “But my past should not and will not keep me from serving the people I swore to protect.”

You break eye contact and walk a few steps, sweeping your gaze along the crowd, doing your best to meet each of their eyes and every camera lens as you continue your speech.

“I would hope that the Council's decision would go some way towards alleviating your fears, but if it does not, then know that I can be trusted because I value my integrity more than I do my pride I know what it's like to be on the wrong end of someone else's prejudice, and I have no desire to inflict that upon others. But beyond that, you can say I’m an idealist."

You turn and walk the other direction, speaking all the while and doing your best to make it seem as if you’re addressing every member of the audience personally.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42369509

You take a step towards the crowd and sweep your arm across the gathered people, “Take a look around you, what do you see? Go on, look.” You pause and wait for the assembled audience to survey their surroundings before continuing.

“I see Asari, Turians, Salarians, Krogan, Volus, Drell, Humans. All of us are standing here on the largest, most awe-inspiring structure in the galaxy, all working, living, laughing, loving, together peacefully despite so many different cultures, psychologies, even biologies. It's amazing, when you really think about it, that as so many differing sapient species, that there aren't more conflicts between us. It just goes to prove that, yes, we ARE capable of living in peace and understanding each other."

You turn back to the Batarian who spurred the question, and find him radiating uncertainty, and even a little fear. But you meet his eyes calmly and move to conclude your speech, “To answer your question, Kar Foro, the races of the Citadel can be certain that I'll serve all the species of the galaxy faithfully and equally, because I am one of them. I want to keep the entire galaxy safe, because it's a beautiful place for all of us to live.”

Elsewhere in the galaxy…
_

A young blonde man smiles at a holo-screen and raises his beer...
_

A badly injured man laughs heartily on his hospital bed as he watches a newsfeed...
_

A haunted woman smiles a warm smile as she watches a speech on her Omni-tool...
_

The applause is thunderous and you admit that it makes you feel great inside. Hell, you think you even inspired yourself with your speech.

Foro skulks off as the applause dies down and you can see that there’s only one reporter who has his hand up, the salarian in the light hardsuit. You guess that you must have dealt with everyone else with that speech.

“Yes, what’s your question?” You ask while pointing at him.

He clears his throat and smiles, “Hi, I’m Chelin Favro with Badass Weekly. We really want to know what you’re like on the battlefield. Basically, what’s your combat style? What kind of weapons do you prefer and armor do you wear? Mods, Tech Modules, Biotic Techniques? Anything awesome that you’ve done during your career?

You chuckle briefly and give the Salarian a smile, “Unfortunately, the majority of my badassery to date is classified, turns out bad guys can read too.” That draws another laugh from the crowd.

“What I CAN tell you is that my loadout and tactics vary depending on the situation, but they are always sufficiently badass,” You continue, making sure to keep amusement in your voice. “But I'm sure there will inevitably be footage of me in combat, so I guess you'll just have to wait til then."

He thanks you and steps back into the crowd, upon which the C-Sec officers begin to disperse the crowd. The Ambassador approaches you from the side and watches them work for a while before addressing you.

“That was excellently handled Commander,” He compliments you. “Truly inspiring. They’ll be talking about that one for quite a while, especially since Shepard ended up having very little media exposure after becoming a Spectre.”

He begins walking towards the Human Embassy, and you follow after him.

“Now, we’re going to have prepare and equip you,” Udina continues. “I believe Admiral Hackett was procuring you a ship and should be sending several files on the matter to me soon. Ah, that reminds me…” He opens his Omni-tool and presses a few buttons.

A moment later, you receive a message from your own tool and open it up.

You’re 50,000 credits richer.

Udina has walked several paces forward while you were checking your tool and you quickly run to catch up to him.

“That money was set aside for your Spectre fund,” Udina explains as he enters the Embassy. “You will still be receiving pay from the Alliance every month, but the Council expects Spectres to be self-sufficient, so there is no additional pay from them.”

Well, that’s dumb.

“We have several things to take care of in addition to the ship. I believe you are in need of new squadmates, but the task of finding them falls on you. Apparently, we’re unable to spare any Special Forces troops to fill your roster, so your only teammate at the moment is Lieutenant Delamer. “I’m going to find some new squadmates first, Ambassador,” You say, walking with him to his office. “A good team can be worth more than a good ship or good supplies."

Udina nods, tapping away on his omni-tool, “You’d know better than I. Alliance Intelligence will provide you with information, should you ask for it. I would also recommend you stop by the Spectre Office in the C-Sec Academy.”

He then pauses and turns to look at you, meeting your eyes with his brown-green orbs. “Do us proud Commander.” And then he’s gone.

You turn to look around the Embassy, noting that it’s awfully empty at the moment. Outside, the artificial sky of the Presidium indicates that it is late afternoon, but your internal clock says mid-morning. Space-lag at its finest.

Anyways, you have squadmates to recruit and… you have no idea where to start.

You hear a deep rumbling voice faintly shout, “Fuck you Leonard!”

“Only my momma calls me Leonard and she ain’t as ugly as you!” Leo shouts back.

You smile, glad to see that Leo’s doing fine. “Well, I need your help. Command can’t refill Epsilon, so it’s up to us to find a new squad. I need your help.”

Immediately, Leo gets serious, “Got it. Where do we start?”
