Killinger shakes his fist in the air at the gaggle of opposition leaders standing opposite him, the rest of the Tory representatives rising in a low murmur of discontent as if following his unspoken direction. “The treaty clearly states that no salvage operation is permitted within Toliman space unless it is a joint operation, or the wreck is claimed without dispute!” He shouts. “What are they doing? No less than making off with the very weapon they used to attempt murder upon our own negotiators! There is your smoking gun.” He finishes, his shout hardly audible over the growing roar of parliament.

“My hands are tied.” Secretary DuPont says with a restrained aggression, as if boiling beneath her skin. “By you.” She adds as a blanket statement. “Any form of military operation outside of Union space requires a super majority approval. Give me that approval. I already have forces in position. When your enemy's weapon jams, you don't just sit around and wait for them to fix it.”

That's a very good question. I dunno if we'll support them in open war...we STILL don't have the fleet for it, I feel. Plus it might make Theseus get a bit antsy.
>>
>>42339024
Hey guys, heres an idea, what if we formed a barricade between the two sides, its one thing to fire on the commonwealth. Its another thing to fire on a third party that isn't shooting at you first.
>>
Someone post the reserve swarms idea from last thread
>>
>>42339144
No too obvious
>>42339125
We need to arrange a defense pact with the commonwealth first or just start hitting union positions in the expanse
>>
>>42339144
I respect the intention, but I'm worried that the Union would ID that 'hey that's those fucking bugs we've been trying to study WTF?' And then they'd put 2 and 2 together.
>>
Best case scenario is both factions reverting into an uneasy peace so they can put up some sort of resistance when the happening arrives.
>>
>>42339144
Or let them all kill each other to death, without aggravating the situation even further like your stupid backfiring idea.
>>
>>42339144
Heh actually i think we should just send a scout into there first to watch and flee

Could disorient everyone or spark the war based on the dice
>>
>>42339181

Well, what can the Union do? Attack us... that'd be a laugh. They don't have nearly the resources or the will required to defeat the hive AND the constant reinforcements we'll send in.

On a similar note, I do remember and I really liked the idea of a reserve fleet from the last thread as well.
>>
>>42339199
...Oh yeeaaaahhh. That's honestly a BIG reason we need to get them to cut this shit out.

They can kill each other as much as they like AFTER we stop the whole 'Mom and her eldritch handlers coming to bitch slap galactic civilization' thing.
>>
>>42339116
Those 2000 shuttles built yet?
>>
>>42339144
I think the most effective way to stop an outbreak of violence now is to announce ourselves to the Union and tell them if they attack the Commonwealth we will come to their aid.
>>
>>42339254
IIRC, the Union actually has a pretty monstrous fleet. We just haven't seen it because they haven't actually given the effort yet.
>>
>>42339274

Yeah, a mutual defense pact or something could work out really well potentially. The commonwealth certainly wouldn't say no. The question is, would the commonwealth actually come to our defense when the Obsidian Queen attacks.
>>
>>42339274
That's probably sound, but we need to actually start negotiating with the commonwealth first
>>
>>42339259
I think we might be still working on those Light and missile ambush fleets. We should get those mining corvettes done first that would make it easier to build everything else.

Quick bit of news. Lot of stuff happened this week.
First, I fixed hexographer, but in a continued stroke of poor luck the image I made is too large. I'll need to make a smaller one in a bit.
Second, I'm very sorry for being unable to run any extra days this week. The engine in my car shorted and burned the carburetor, leaving me on the side of the road for most of my intended prep day. As such, I was unable to do much of the calculations for things built or purchased. The good news of that is that it technically has no upkeep for this thread.
Third, I plan on running either tomorrow or Tuesday, so we can run our usual all nighter, I'll sleep a bit, and then run a .3 to continue with things we havn't been able to manage in a while.
Finally, I am unsure if I will be able to continue at a regular pace in the coming month. I need to find a second job, and will be living in the woods for a while, not to mention my computer is old and on the verge of death. I just wanted to give you a heads up that I may need to go on hiatus for a bit in the near future.

>>
>>42339364
This line of thinking was why the Mongolians were able to rek everyone's shit. Nice going asshole.
>>
>>42339395
Cool.

Is it possible to make a dedicated weapons platform for the singularity projector without using the (expensive) battleship hull as a mount? My thinking is that the singularity projector could prove an outstanding planetary defensive unit due to its ability to provide area denial and deflect incoming weapons fire. Even if a defensive platform only has a range of 100km or so (knife fight range when considering the size of our ships and the vast distances in space), it would be capable of defending approximately 30,000 square kilometers. Even a small network could probably defend our entire main hive cluster on Leeland, and provide a nasty surprise for the Obsidian Queen. The biggest problems I foresee are that either:

1. The singularity projector range is so limited it can’t serve in this capacity. Or
2. A defensive station is so expensive it makes no sense it makes no sense to build static defense when we could create a battleship for same cost.

Thoughts? Do thing for Mother?

New Construction Options
Defensive structures
>Anti-orbital battery – A bunker armed with a massive Particle beam capable of attacking ships in orbit from the ground. It includes the power and sensor systems required to operate it. 250N 1500M
>Surface to Orbit Missile System – This massive bunker complex houses a wide range of warheads and a nigh limitless number of missiles within its protective walls, allowing you to launch missiles against approaching invaders from the safety of your hive. The facility uses the ship missile stats and comes equipped with a single Cruise missile silo that can target any detected object within the system, five Stinger missile silos capable of targeting any craft within high orbit, and ten Swarm missile silos specialized in targeting high altitude aircraft and low orbiting targets. The facility itself is a massive complex spread out over several miles, and includes guidance and launch equipment, as well as the means to construct and maintain a stock of warheads and missiles. (1500N 2500M)

I appreciate that, but I actually already have plans for getting a new one very soon. I just wanted to let you know that I'm essentially running on a potato powered by ork tech, and catastrophic failure is a possibility.

Sometimes it smells like a burning tire...
>>
>>42339409
The rapid growth and rebuilding capabilities of the hive render that comparison apples and oranges.
>>
>>42339418
My personal plan for using singularity projectors involves putting them on a battleship hull designed to blink into weapons range of a high value enemy unit. Like a hive ship, or a god-ship. Call them Decide battleships.
>>
>>42339508
Just sayin' cause it might save you some cash down the line. Hell, I'd offer you a job if I had the spare financials. (Software dev here)

>>
>>42339418
Maybe. Might be more cost effective to just trade with the Commonwealth for dome shields though. Just equipping our Citadel ship with Singularity projectors is going to cost a million creds at standard Valen canderon rates.

>Wanting to break down based sniffer

>>
>>42339556

>>
>>42339527

Sounds good. Really, a lot of this depends on the cost of construction on battleships vis a vis static defense. I'll be happy either way, as long as we put this cool tech to use soon.

Well last week the cabin filled with smoke.
That one was from a coolant leak. Fun times, and it's essentially an ork trukk.

>>42339418
The range is so short that it would be unable to effectivley defend anything but itself. At least on a planetary scale. A station or ship could defend other ships nearby, or a capillary tower.
>>
Thinking about it, now I'm curious.

QD, what do you do? Alternatively, what are you good at?
>>
>>42339526
Each of these factions has a much larger industrial base and established presence than we do, we're not at the point where we can shrug off potential allies in the fight against magic crystal gods.

I would argue that the motive of grabbing more resources is insufficient regarding the human factions on the grounds that Obsidian Queen is sitting on a whole bunch of resources too, it's better to grab hers since she's already hostile to us rather than gaining yet another enemy.
>>
>>42339607
The amount we'd have to spend could bankrupt a planet.
>>
>>42339637
I too am curious. The notion of QD being some kind of mountain man eking out a living in the bush amuses me.
>>
>>42339607

Would point defense really be any cheaper, though, is the question.

50,000 creds is really pocket change to an empire like ours. Our battleships probably cost the equivalent of billions of creds each and we can shit them out in a day.

We're also a powerful alien interstellar empire. We could just raid a Canderon supply depot with overwhelming firepower and just take what we want. This would put us in a bit of a war, however.

>Orbital solar array – A station placed in orbit of the local star equipped with a membrane of photosynthetic cells several kilometers in diameter capable of producing a steady stream of nutrient income. Provides 1000N per day total (5,000N 5,000M
>Harvester Dock – A large pier built along the shore overlooking the spore-producing ocean film that serves as an unloading area for Harvester drones, and contains pipelines to pump collected raw nutrients to the hive’s awaiting processing facilities, includes a single Harvester which is covered by the cost and upkeep of the dock. Provides 500N per day total (38N 50M)
>Orbital electroponic station – An orbital instillation built near a large source of hydrogen used to fuel a large fusion core, which in turn provides electrical power to a contained algae farm facility. Must be built in orbit of a gas giant. Provides +500N per day and doubles as a gas mining facility, refueling the tritium stores of any ships in the system. (1000M)
>Algae Farm – A carved out space used to utilize Leeland’s natural electrical field to cultivate food. +100N per day, 1 worker to maintain.
>Hydroponic platform – A floating greenhouse platform used to grow farmland through hydroponics that can only be built on or near water with open access to plentiful sunlight. Each greenhouse platform supports roughly one hectare and requires a single worker to tend the crop and maintain the platform. Multiple platforms can be connected together to create fields of floating farmland. +200N per day, 1 worker to maintain.

We should make colonization ships that are meant to land on the planet and become the hive, in the out layer of the hull it would have spikes that spread put hive creep at a fast rate but before the complete takeover starts thousands of drones are sent out over the entire planet to collect samples(we have really neglected this feature since we could easily discover better crops or ways to make our crops better). it would just be fling one at the planet and it will will be added to the empire
>>
>>42339845
>Filter towers – A large underwater pylon built to extract raw nutrients from the microbial life of the surrounding ecosystem. Can only be used on planets with bountiful biospheres and deep oceans capable of supporting large amounts of microbes. Provides between 100 and 500 N per day, depending on the local environment. (500M)
>Capillary Tower – This massive organic space elevator offers a number of logistical and economic advantages, despite its drastic up front cost and fragile nature. Shuttles or space craft are no longer needed to move resources from the surface to orbital structures, freeing shuttles for more important tasks. The counterweight station serves as a center for construction, with 4 docking pylons included on the structure to repair and build ships, while gaining a bonus to capital ship construction time due to the speedy nature with which resources arrive from the surface. The Capillary Tower can also spread hive creep and extract resources at an increased rate, spreading roots deep into the crust to bring up resources directly into orbit, allowing you to consume a planet much more quickly than normal. A Hive ship can construct a Capillary Tower if given the time and resources to do so, deploying one after 3 full days, after which it becomes the counterweight station, and must remain stationary until it detaches and destroys the tower to move. A Hive ship deployed in this way does not have access to its spinal weapons, but can use other features as normal. A planet can hold a max of 4 Capillary Towers along its equator. For each one, planetary mining or over harvest activities are doubled. (50,000N 500,000M)

>Ship grapple
Despite being little more than a tow cable with a grappling hook on the end, this device holds all manner of engineering nightmares involved in its design. The problem of making a grapple secure the target hull reliably, the ability to prevent the line from breaking, or worse, the hull from sheering off. To overcome these limitations, you have developed a specialized system modeled after the salvaged grapples found in the Scavenger gunship.

>Ram
What was once the most basic and simple form of naval combat, when translated into space combat, becomes a nightmarish and suicidal undertaking that is just as likely to kill you as it is to kill your enemy. The complexity of the science is not in the process of ramming; anyone can do it once. The trick is to learn how to do it again. The ability to ram a space craft and not share its fate requires a mixture of application of complex velocity control, strategic hull reinforcing, reactive armor plating, and a dash of madness. Madness can be used as a substitute for the rest rather easily, but it does hamper the ship’s rate of survival.

>>42339895
It's the welders that make exhaust systems that are the issue. Most of them would just make a loud banging sound or rattle the plane if they broke, but a few may cause your cabin to fill with deadly exhaust fumes, or send shrapnel into the engine or something.
Still safer then a car. At least safer then my car.

[New Ship Module Unlocked]
Harpoon Launcher: Built to fire the ship grapple, the harpoon launcher utilizes a harpoon-like hook tipped with a non-Newtonian fluid warhead that punctures the target hull, then dissolves into a liquid seal only to become rigid again once the line becomes taught, anchoring the harpoon in place. The line is made of an elastic ligament made of a carbon nano-tube weave with a semi-liquid crystal carbon suspension within which replenishes damaged segments of the tether and can be pumped into the harpoon to create a solid diamond anchor within the target hull. The harpoon is launched from a specialized launch tube, and can maneuver itself to a limited degree like a missile, and is linked to a segmented superstructure that distributes the strain equally across the ship’s hull, but includes a failsafe allowing the launch tube to be jettisoned in an emergency to cut the line. A Harpoon Launcher holds a single launch tube and roughly a kilometer of compact tether. The launch tube requires careful preparation to load, and cannot be reloaded in combat. Scoring a hit with a tether will prevent the target from exiting melee range and allow the ship to attempt to reel in the target, after which the relative speed of the ship and its target is reduced to zero and any attack, be it weapon, boarding pod, or additional harpoons, is an automatic hit, and both ships are forced to follow a velocity equal to their combined acceleration. The more tethers connect the two ships, the less likely it is for the harpoons to break loose or sheer the target’s hull. The harpoon cannot penetrate shields, and the harpooning ship must lower its shields to fire. If the ship has multi-layer shields, only the side of the ship facing the target is rendered vulnerable. (10N 200M)

Ramming Keel: While at first glance it looks like a simple bow from a naval ship, it is much more than that. The surface holds a shaped ram laminated in a carbon lattice with a semi-liquid crystal suspension within designed to plow through debris, but not puncture a target hull. This imparts the ship with a bonus against damage from space debris and attacks against its bow, but hampers its targeting and logistical sensors, reducing its accuracy with weapons at medium and long range, and reducing its ability to perform scans of a system. The critical components are held deep within the ship in the form of a reinforced nanostructure of superconducting coils surrounding a ferrous metal core which runs the length of the ship, replacing one spinal mount slot. This accomplishes two things, the first is that it prevents the hull from buckling under the force of the impact; the second is that it allows the ship to crack the target’s hull immediately prior to the actual impact by driving the core out from the spinal mount and into the target ship, imparting additional impact force into the target’s hull and creating a wedge for the ram to drive into while cushioning the ramming ship from the impact. The ferrus core is then driven back into the mount and the system reloaded. (5N 20M per 10 meters: Uses a single spinal mount.)

“Project Moonraker.” Secretary Windsor says. “It was initially a salvage operation designed to reverse engineer what we thought was a component of the Confederate superweapon. Dr. Emmrich was given command of the research, and it quickly evolved from there.” He says hesitantly. He looks over his computer, double checking that the relay connection is secure. Gilliam seems confused.

“Why are you bringing me in one this?” He asks. Windsor looks through his files as he answers.

“Simply put, I need a second opinion. Early tests regarding certain materials offered interesting and promising results, but it was volatile. Hostile even, if you were willing to categorize an intent onto an object. Containment became our priority, and we eventually managed to accomplish just that. A method of containment with no detectable leak of particles, at least according to the, uh, volunteers at the time. Our instruments can’t detect it, but it has a measurable effect on organic matter over time, and even more importantly, can be harnessed as an energy source.” He says as Gilliam looks through the files sent to his computer. Various shards of a dark metallic substance are placed carefully along a table, with smooth replicas set beneath them. A number of Ceph test subjects have entries as well, and a small fragment of the hull of a Ceph Voidcutter sits amid a crowd of human scientists.

“The cutters are made of a non-reflective material that resists attempts to scan them. When destroyed, their drive swallows most of the debris up, but sometimes a chunk falls free. We were able to match them up as best we could, and Emmerich eventually concluded that the Ceph ships and the fragments found near the artifact were made of the same material.” Windsor continues. “Up until then we had no way of knowing what the material was for, until we saw how it interacted with the artifact. It acts like a conductor, and we were able to assemble it into a kind of faraday cage.”

Your pod watches as the Commonwealth tugs slowly haul the small, oblong object up from the layers of gas and storm clouds.

“My agents say the containment may have been breached. Emmerich says that’s impossible. I want you to run the math and tell me straight if that’s the case.” He says, leaning in over his desk. “I need to know if his machine has failed critically, or if it was sabotaged, and I need to know quickly, before it falls into enemy hands.”

We just need to find a loophole in the math that will allow that as a plausible answer.

The Union is going to get fucked so hard, we need to do something. We need to contact someone in the government and use them.

Probably because traditional power methods like fusion or the quantum power tap would leave a distinctive energy signature.
To date the only ones who have run stealth are the Ceph and their void shard engines and our sugar-powered starships.
>>
>>42340712
For the same reason I initially thought that the Mirage was fusion powered and that our podsplosion would be PLAUSIBLE as a fusion core meltdown.

I assumed a quantum power tap produced more heat and made stealth shorter.

But a void shard is probably a completely cold, possibly even heat absorbing going by how it drinks in the light, power source.

Gilliam looks over the images. A large black splotch has been edited over whatever it is the scientists are working on. You stifle Gilliam's curiosity for his own good before he starts drooling at the mouth. "So what. You want me to double check his work? That's it?" He asks.

"In a way, yes. The machine was incorporated into a prototype ship. A next generation stealth craft. The modifications allowed it to enter and exit some form of dimensional flux. No-space, as Dr. Emmerich calls it."

You have Gilliam search through the files. He finds Emmerich's personal notes. Much of it is redacted. You continue to read through them, and the writing becomes more erratic. His notes are interspersed with diagrams, mathematical formulas, and various theoretical prototype diagrams, as well as sketches of the artifact. Each one is censored with a series of black lines, but the sketches become larger as the notes go on. You find a passage near one of them.

"I am continuously amazed at the artifact. I have measured it six times today alone, and I now have six different sets of totally unrelated data. Interestingly, the objects spacial dimensions alone any one axis seems to have no bearing on any other. I've had to modify the software myself, we were just getting errors at first."

You flip the pages several times.
"I am normally not one to put stock in visual observation, but I have noticed the artifact always seems slightly different when observed. I convinced some colleagues to humor me, and took measurements while it was being observed from all angles. They came back as the same. None of our cameras ever detect it moving. The only variable is human observation.

I am unsure of what to make of this."

Gilliam continues to flip through the notes, feeling your attention like a hot rod against the back of his mind.

"The others insist on using visors with cameras. They refuse to look at it directly now. I find this strange. It seems to move when I look at it now. They say I should [REDACTED]"

Gilliam fumbles his data pad for a moment before continuing to flip through the sensor laden documents.

"I've seen it! It was truly amazing. Like a kind of inverted space, reality inside itself. The sensors didn't pick up anything, but the test subjects all experienced some kind of altered fear response, all of them, at once. It was no coincidence. We're on to something here. I think we almost have the containment material perfected. I can feel it. We just need to ______________________________ and we should be able to prevent any more unwanted manifestations."

Windsor takes a small swig of a drink. "Are you alright, doctor?" He asks. Gilliam nods absentmindedly and flips to the next page.

"'I look upon the void and shake. There is no reason but theirs that I swim these waters, for there is nothing but them, and from them, there will be nothing.'
A Ceph poem. I found it recently on the net. We will be running our first test tomorrow."

Gilliam flips over to the last page.

"The test was a perfect success.
The door has been opened. To go in, and come out. Soon the real work can begin."

"If you're reading through his notes." Windsor says, "He's a bit of an eccentric. Always has been. You know what they say, about brilliance and madness. If he's dropped the ball, it will have been the first time in his career. That's why I want your take on things."

Gilliam drops the tablet to his desk, his mind overwhelmed by yours.

Well, we have nukes. We also have black hole generators (canderon required), and massive railguns with megaton yields. We also have an array of bioweapons (or should at least have them), and have the ability to begin research into some truly nightmare shit. Did I forget anything?

Oh, we also have rogue AI allies which could probably qualify as a super weapon all on their own.

From what little you've shown me, I have a lot of reason to doubt that Dr. Emmerich has any concrete idea about how this thing actually functions. There is a world of difference between getting something to function in a certain way and actually grasping how it works. The fact that he was the only one to even look directly at it, much less understand it, is hardly a fine example of peer review in any case. His work gives no indication that using it in this way wouldn't cause the containment to fail catastrophically, which is what usually happens when you try to bottle lightening without understanding it. I could try and gather a more informed opinion about the holes in his work and what could have gone wrong, but I'll need direct access to the object in question.

"It's not all that unusual for him. He actually has a collection of Valen philosophy. He claims it's, and I'm quoting, 'the advanced War and Peace'. Either way, he's a savant, and his colleagues vouch for the accuracy of his work."

"I'm sure they do." Gilliam says with a forced smirk. "Do you have any idea how much pressure they're under, working on a project like this under a lunatic?" He shakes his head and sits down, his foot shaking nervously "Either way, I'll keep looking into it."

"Good." Windsor nods. "But be quick about it. We have maybe a day tops before our window closes and we need to make a decision, and I need to know if that tech is worth salvaging or not."

"Salvaging?"

"It's nothing, doctor, but you'll likely see it on the news soon, depending on how this goes." He says, and the hologram cuts out. Gilliam gasps as his mind is untangled from your constricting focus. Wise places his hand on the knight and moves it up three dimensions. Your speaker chirps softly.

"That is a poor decision."

He tightens his grip on the piece and moves it to the third level to take your bishop.

"That will open your flank."

He places it back and sits in silence for a moment, shooting periodic glances to your ambassador as it stands squat next to the table. It tilts its head and twitches its antennae.

Wise hovers his hand over his remaining rook and picks it up. Your speaker chitters its beak.

"Perhaps another move would be better."

He reaches for the queen.

"Best piece! Not best move."

Wise sits back again and looks over the 3d chess board. His remaining options are limited.

"I'm sorry. I'm usually quite good at this game." He says.

If we offer to help with the scavengers we may gain enough of a rapport we can get at least the commonwealth on our side with regards to galaxy ending threats. We are limited in how long we can play dumb. How long, for example, until the obsidian queen attacks humans. Time is not on our side as much as we would like it to be.

That's what I'm saying, though. We're setting ourselves up as a protector civilization, where we're so blatantly more advanced then them that they really have nothing to offer us. Any alliance on our part is just covering bases, but them allying themselves is a big deal. It's not because they trust us, but because we can blow them out of the water without trying. "How many nutrients do humans cultivate? Facilities hear seem meager."

"Uh." He chews on his lip as he looks over the board. Eventually he places a bishop down a level to take your knight. "Well, we're rather efficient in most respects. Our food comes from our member states. They send us resources to maintain our military to defend them."

Your drone makes its move without a moment of hesitation, sending a pawn up one level. "And what of others? There are two fronts soon, yes? What is the other?"

"Oh, uh. It's just a rebel group really. They call themselves the Union. They're colonies that fought against earth forces. We've been at a stand still ever since their initial aggression ended in a stalemate."

"That is a poor move."

"That was a long time ago though." He finishes, then takes the pawn you placed forward, as you predicted. You take the rook in response.

"The Magnus said this was your temporary home. Why is it temporary? It seems quite sufficient."

"Sufficient, yes, but it's not our home." He says. "This is a temporary capital, until we can liberate Earth. That's where humans evolved. It was attacked by the rebels, and now we're forced out here." He points to the small pendant on his uniform. "Earth used to have a moon almost a quarter of its size. It was enormous, and helped stabilize the environment. When the rebels attacked, I heard they hit something, a mine or armory, the rumors are scarce on details, but it blew up the whole thing. It devastated the earth, but at least it stopped the fighting. The Union don't even use it. It's still too dangerous to land on." He says, polishing the small shimmering earth on his coat. "Of course, eventually, we'll be able to go back, clean it up, and resettle it." He says as he makes his move, taking your rook.

I understand that it was made back when we barely had control of Leeland,
they would surely see us very differently know that we have somehow made a fleet of starships to rival the Union's own in less than than a year,

Cloaked and shielded variants should be different. Though the shielded ones may be more niche since the only place where I think they may be more useful is when we need to grab a ship in the middle of a fleet before it runs and we have to make sure its escorts don't take out the boarder.
>>

You quickly make your move and your speaker chitters.

"How do they remove humans from your homeworld? This seems strange, was it not defended? You are in check now."

"Well, it's a very large rebel group. In fact, they occupy a great deal of systems and worlds, rivaling our own space, pound for pound." He says as he looks over his king's moves. "And it was heavily defended. Both sides sent the majority of their remaining fleets against each other. Earth orbit is still filled with the ship debris. Millions died, and billions more were lost on the planet."

"That is sad. Are you sure you wish to move there?" You ask. "The wise human has odd sensor organs. They are different to the others."

"Yes." He says. "They're artificial. I was born blind. These are synthetic lenses that connect to my ocular nerve." He rubs at one, and digs his finger into the soft whites of his left eye, pinching it slightly. It deforms and pops out to reveal a mechanical socket within and a thin wire running into his skull.

"It's a cheap model they give you for free when you join the military. My family dropped me off at a recruiting center, and they gave me these." He pops the eye back in. "They need replacing every few years, but otherwise they're as good as natural eyes. Better even." Your drone scoffs, as well as it can at least.

"You stick metal in your skull. How is this better then growing new organs?"

"Well." He says as he moves his king. "I mean, it's a bit better then a natural eye. I can record images, or take pictures. I has better range and definition, and can see better in low light. Not by much, but-"

"But why do you not grow a better one?" You ask. "You are in check again. You should avoid check."

"Then what do they eat?"

"They don't." He says. "Well, I suppose technically they consume fuel, typically hydrogen, among other things. What do yours, uh, eat?"

The plasma is useful because it can penetrate the shields and burn the projectors of the hull, as they demonstrated in the battle of Winsor. Your drone leans in close, and he leans back. "The hive could grow you better ones. They appear simple in design."

"Excuse me?"

"Human eyes look simple. Easy to make."

"I, uh," He stammers. You feel the temptation of the offer shoot through his mind like a stone skipping across a lake, quickly gone but its ripples spreading out behind it. "I'm not sure if that's, uh, I mean thank you for the offer, but I think you should discuss that with my superiors. How are you so sure you could even do it?"

Your drone chirps with a buzz of indignant pride. "Humans are so simple. So few legs, your warriors are as squishy as your thinkers and speakers." Your drone leans in again as you make your move, putting him in check once more. "Your ships do not grow, and eat hydrogens, and you leak."

"Excuse me?"

"You have leaked much of your liquid contents. Your skin requires repair." You say. He wipes his forehead.

"Oh, you mean sweating. It's the way humans cool our bodies."

"Leaking is a bad way to cool! Speakers will be able to improve, or they are bad speakers."

He nods, and makes his move, taking the bishop that holds him in check.

"Your leader is wrinkly. Is this to hold more water because of leaking? Does the Marshal inflate with water?"

"More like hot air." He mumbles.

"Is this for transport? This would explain humans having so few legs."

"Uh, no no." Wise says quickly. "He's old. When humans age, their skin degrades. Mine will as well, after many years. Humans on average reach peak fitness after twenty years or so. After that the body ages until death."

"This is an error in translation. This speaker believed you claimed humans expire, but that is nonsensical. How can you reach the stars if your thinkers are rotting?"

"Uh, no. We spend much of our lives teaching our children what we have learned, and they improve upon it. That's how evolution works, each generation is an improvement on the last."

Your drone scratches at its face with its claws in exasperated agony as it lets out a pitying squeal. "The thinker that designed the human should be recycled. It probably expired from poor design as well."

"You mean you don't... expire?" He asks slowly. Your speaker's antennae twitch madly.

"Humans throw themselves through space but do not fix yourselves! How long does this teaching last?"

"Well, many humans spend most of their lives perfecting their craft. I graduated with my first doctorate when I was twenty-" Your speaker lets out a horrified chittering screech like a field of crickets.

"You are all terminally ill!" Your speaker looks down at the board after its twitching and quickly moves a piece. "You are also in checkmate."

>>
>>42345130
Actually, you may be on to something here. We can always do this to the Union before we make ourselves public with them.

We just need to find some files of races to get some prototype ideas from and then we can try to whip some up from our thinkers.
>>
>>42345152
we can still make them and have them be the "mother caste" or elite caste
>>
>>42344825

Of course they will only ever dare to spare one admiral at a time, since running the Commonwealth takes most of their attention, they won't want more than one in crazy experimental alien aging treatment at once.

But, maybe, in preparation for the long surgery, we can say we require a quick bio-scan in preparation for the procedure, and it takes time to calculate and prepare the procedure customized to the individual.

That gives us an excuse to quickly have all of them take a quick bath in the bio-tank in short succession, with actual surgery a possibility for later once it's determined to be viable.
>>
>>42345224

I don't think the commonwealth is quite that stupid. We can only hope they would put their entire leadership at the complete mercy of some strange alien species they just met. I doubt it would happen on anything rolled below a 100, however.
>>
>>42345255
Probably we'll get one guy who's old enough and desperate enough and close enough to retirement anyway to take the plunge.

They'll be a lot more trusting of us if thy think we aren't capable of an ulterior motive.

The door opens as Wise looks at the chess board in confusion. Your drone looks to the medics as they enter, each in a full suit of hazard equipment. Your drone chitters loudly as they enter.

"Are you aware you will expire?" They look at each other with concern.

"Uh. Did we miss something?"
"When is this? I mean, eventually yea, but are you talking about soon or..."

"The humans find this acceptable?" Your drone chitters. The medics walk over to Wise, who has packed up the chess set already.

"It seems that to the hive," he says, "mastery of your own evolution should come before spaceflight. They don't age, apparently, and find it shocking that we do."

"It's not just a human thing. All the aliens we've encountered age just the same, if at different rates." One says to your drone.

"How is this defect normal?" Your drone mutters as it walks off to the far side of the room, then changes the subject. "The basket is ready for consumption!" It says, and vomits the processed fruits into a small bowl. The two warriors and the speaker huddle around to consume the slurry.

You hear a loud buzzing from the headset of the medics as they check on Wise's condition and prepare to leave, and he leans in close.

"Brass wants to talk to you. In the hall." He says. Wise nods and follows them out of the door as your drones finish the pre-digested fruit basket.

The door closes behind them as you hear the flicker of static and several holograms appear. A low, gravelly sounding voice greets Wise by his rank.

"Commandant Zadornov, sir, it's an honor." He replies.

"I know." He says. Tell me, Commander, how does the alien's offer sound?"

"Excuse me, sir?"

"To give you new eyes." He replies. Your speaker detects Wise's mood sharpen with apprehension.

"I figured you'd be more interested in the other bit of information." He says. The voice lets out a huff of a laugh.

"Yes, but they didn't offer to teach us. We won't assume anything. Avoid admitting any more ignorance. Doge future questions until you learn their own limitations first. If they're more advanced then us, we need to know by how much while avoiding admitting weakness. They've offered you new eyes. Accept the offer."

"Sir!" He says in protest, but your speaker feels a hint of something less reluctant in his mind. A curiosity of sorts.

"We can offer them use of the medical lab, or allow them to bring materials in from their ship if needed and they can walk our doctors through the process. Afterwards we can run scans and examine your status. We may be able to learn something about their bio-technology. Besides, you were scheduled to get replacements next month anyway. Consider this an advance on your medical waiting list."

"Is the rest of the board sure of this?"

"We were unanimous. The deliberation did not take long." He says. "Also, I should let you know, you've been recommended for a promotion to Captain. Congratulations. The paperwork is being processed as we speak. Dasvidania, Commander."

There is a burst of static, and a moment later Wise enters the room again. His face is pale.

"Uh. About your offer, for new eyes." He says. "Would you be willing to perform the procedure here?"

It means sacrificing utility of an advantage though. Less chance of overhearing thigns in future encounters. It's short-term thinking. Not worth it, especially with the prospect of much better blackmail in the future. Also, blackmail them how exactly? You need theoretical access to a party whose opinion they care about for it to be blackmail. There isn't one, here.

Is HQQ the most popular civ quest?
>>
>>42346185
>Yes, we can teach the humans

"Why would humans want to watch? You do not understand. You will be confused." Your drone chirps. "But if they wish, they may watch. We must study and prepare first."

Alright, I'm going to start setting up for the next thread before we 404.

Definitely the most popular of the Civ quests. Haven't checked many of the other recent quests but I know no one gets this many posters in Civs

Except maybe Cyclops Civ but that is kill

Well either way, we might need 24 hours to prepare the ship to produce the bio-tank we need.

We may want to produce 10 bio-tanks just in case we need more later. Just to give us a buffer.

Build Biotanks 5 and another ambassador to meet Wise on the ship (can't remember if we had an egglayer on the ship or not)
>>
>>42346298
Okay, now is as good a time as any, does this look like a good ship design?

Hull: Corvette 400N 800M
Capacity: 200/20
Size: 100 Meters
Module Limit: 2
Spinal Mount (x1): Ramming Keel 50N 200M
Turret (X2): Cyclotron 50M
Fixed (X2): Ion Cannon 40M
Auxiliary (X8): Plasma Lance 80M
Armor: Conductive 150N 500M
Utility: Cloaking Shields 50N 150M
Utility: Rapid Damage Control 15N 20M
Module: Harpoon 10N 200M
Module: Boarding pod launcher 50N 100M
Total Cost: 575N 2140M

Also QD, I noticed that boarding pod modules have been taken off the pastebin. Can we fire them from drop pod launchers now?
>>
>>42346330
It doesn't matter. Cocooning is faster and takes only 24 hours and we have plenty of spare warriors to turn into such drones.

One of which can even cocoon into an egglayer to increase the drone count total. But medium-sized eggs take 2 or 3 days to hatch.
>>
>>42346330
Yea we do but don't need another ambassador

It will freak him out to talk to another

>>42346332
Yea it works
Are you adding it to the ambush fleets or main battle fleets
>>
>>42346332
Looks good to me
>>
>>42346332
Yes...but I would rather we have two harpoons for redundancy
>>
>>42346340
I thought our research into medical nanomachines allows medium sized drones to hatch a day after being laid.
>>
>>42346354
Eh it works
We just keep them in wolf packs to ensure our troops can board
>>
>>42346330
lets just jump and get one, it'll be faster
>>
>>42346332
Possibly change out to two harpoons.

But whatever design, we can lay... 200 of them.

>>42346364
Check the archives, I see nothing like that. >>37027529
>>
>>42346347
I think it would make more sense in the ambush fleets wouldn't it?

>>42346354
I asked around, and the general consensus seemed to be for boarding pods. This way we can spam a ship with boarders from afar if the harpoon line gets severed.
>>
This drone is sad it is unable to help with this quest but watch from the sidelines. Make this drone proud for other shadowrunning drones.

This drone feels the terrible burden of providing so many of the writeins that have proven critical to the quest and is worried if he gets hit by a bus someday.

I think it's more to do with the quality of the nutrients required. The human body requires a cocktail of sugars, starches, proteins, and vitamins, we just need sugars. So the hive has to put together a specialized, and inefficient, blend of nutrients to keep its human guests alive.
