Your pod drifts carefully and slowly through the system of Refuge, putting in great effort to avoid detection by the capital fleet. It has remained largely motionless since your arrival, but your pod detects movement further in. It drifts closer to the forested world where the hive ship orbits to get a clearer picture, and you see a number of shuttles moving in a low orbit. It is nothing new, and your pod begins to dismiss the activity when you feel a pang of mental anguish in your mind.

It is not from the Obsidian Queen. Her anger continues to simmer from her fleets, but you feel it is hive. It is there only for a moment, and an instant later, an object erupts from the thick, foggy clouds and detonates beneath a corvettes as it attempts to skim the atmosphere. Its hull begins to break up, and the ship crumbles as it drifts downward into the misty clouds. Several other ships fire their railguns at where the object was fired from, and the clouds part for a moment with several orbs of light.

There is silence again.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Your drones have finished their scouting of the seemingly endless corridors of the Builder's vast space structure. While nearly all of the technologies are obsolete to your astounding technological leaps, you do find a select few items of interest. In addition, you have learned much from studying the structure itself, and your thinkers propose a more detailed architectural survey, something you have yet to have the chance to do with the mega-structures of human space.

[New Research Unlocked]

>Space city construction
Medium
By examining the details of how such a massive structure is formed and stabilized within its orbit, as well as techniques on laying out life support and logistical systems on a scale far larger then any ship, you should eventually be able to design and build space born stationary structures to rival even the works of the Builder herself.

>Psionic sensors
Slow
This is a strange project indeed, and a concept that should not work at first assumption. It utilizes a basic concept of quantum mechanics, that being that the future of a particle effects it present state, and applies it to a mass scale. The hypothesis is a sensor that does not sense a target, but predicts it. The project is still in its infancy, however, and there is hardly any work finished beyond some basic mathematics and theories.

>Tachyonic insulators
Medium
You did not find any thinker alive that was working on this strange project, with all of them nearby fossilized long ago. You did, however, find a small sample of prototype material which seems to absorb tachyonic particles and then disperse them in random directions, scrambling psionic signals and making them appear as universal background noise.

You ponder the nature of the events in Refuge. Your rival queen's anger rises sharply, but it does not hold her attention for long. You feel her rage largely satisfied by the fields of cooling glass being quickly covered by the clouds, and her fleet resumes its stance.

Waiting.

Just to elaborate, since you are the first queen you know of to develop dedicated surface to orbit defenses, the standard of all hives before you, as far as you are aware, is to utilize picket fleets for defense. You can expect your rival queen to be no different, meaning she does not use small patrols to bolster a planet's defense, the fleet is the planet's defense, and is much more stationary. Decoy attacks would be less effective then if they were used against other factions that rely on small patrols and defensive structures.

>5 missile ambush fleets to ambush them, followed soon after by 10 Heavy Battle Fleets, and 15 light fleets

Your fleets gather themselves and prepare to deploy. Your space churns from the activity and a wave of excitement rolls over your hive.

(5x) Carrier Battlecruiser
(50x) Ambush Missile Cruiser
(250x) Vanguard Frigate
(500x) Ambush Missile Corvette
Blink in and attack first

(40) Heavy Fleet Battlecruiser
(60) Heavy Fleet Cruiser
(120) Heavy Fleet Frigate
Hangar Space each (1 Shuttles/3 Fighters)
(160) Heavy Fleet Corvette
(30) Patrol Corvette
Fighter: (360) Heavy Fleet Fighter
Shuttle: (120) Heavy Gunboat

(900) Light Fleet Frigate
(225) Light Fleet Cruiser

Your pod counts the enemy forces. While you cannot make a full count of the patrolling craft drifting through the entire system, blinking in and out with supplies periodically, the bulk of the defensive fleet itself consists of a single Hive ship, flanked by four cruiser and sixteen frigates, with fifty or more corvettes and an untold number of swarm drones.

(1) Obsidian Hive ship
(4) Cruisers

The system is rimmed by a thick reflective debris field that hampers sensor data and impedes navigation. The giant fractured chunks and collections of ship parts creates a twisting gyre of gravitation, impeding any attempt to blink directly into the system. The strange properties of the debris field makes for an obvious defense, but it will impede approaching reinforcements in the same way, forcing them to risk missing their blink destination, or blinking outside the rim and moving in under sub-light speeds.

It will be a cage match, for better or worse.

Your pod's location within the gyre should help your calculations, but there is still a chance of your fleet missing the mark. By comparison, if your fleet enters the system through the debris field you may loose some of the element of surprise, but you your ships are sure to arrive, and will be able to engage at long range with speed on their side.

Yes, but considering the debris in the system this is fine. Any reinforcements have to coem from afar and we can work with this. Especially since we're brinding in so many ships.

Not as much as you'd think.

Remember.

Since there is no distinction between this being a decoy attack and the real attack, since if you could tell the difference it wouldn't be a very good decoy, the amount of reinforcements sent is not going to be overwhelming.

Your pod can hardly contain itself. A passing corvette moves close to investigate the whispers of excitement and overwhelming joy. The pod vibrates with anticipation as your fleet charges their drives.

A star appears within the system, for just a moment. The vibrant radiation of your fleet of over eight hundred ships is enough to scorch several shuttles, their hulls evaporating into clouds of particulate and ash in less than an instant.

"Kill! Kill all the things for Mother!" They shout, forgetting your training regarding their volume. It reverberates over the system, and for a moment, the enemy fleet is confused. For a moment.

In the next moment, a wall of ferrous slugs and directed energy slams into the nearest ships like a super nova ripping through a solar sail. You hear an echo of their minds begin to register the events unfolding, and their hulls are torn open and scattered as shrapnel. The space behind the first salvo is filled with swarm drones. They swerve through the scattering debris like expanding tendrils feeling through the debris for survivors. You feel their thoughts racing with blood lust as they eviscerate the enemy swarms and vent the hulls of surviving ships.

A mist of blood fills your view, and your ships continue their charge. A corvette is evaporated in an instant as it fails in its attempt to put down flak against your swarms, the ships it was charged to protect disappearing beneath a carpet of swarm fighters like a wounded animal in a piranha feeding frenzy. They turn away and accelerate to the next ship, leaving a smoldering husk behind.

Your feel the minds of the enemy begin to organize from their disorientation, and the ships begin to fall back together around the Hive ship. It fires its railgun, and a slug the size of a gunship is sent meters from the hull of one of your battlecruisers and cutting a clean swath through the debris. The slug detonates against the front half of a frigate's wreckage, erupting into a white hot ball of superheated plasma. It dims slowly behind your fleet, casting a crimson radiance over the battle as corvettes silently vanish into ripples of light in the darkness.

The enemy fleet regroups, and the Hive ship begins launching its own drones. Clouds of swarmers swirling over its hull like an ablative shield. It fires again, and the blow glances your lead ship, ricocheting off the edges of your Battlecruiser's shield. It dips by several kilometers, knocking off its aim as its own railgun slugs fly wide into the void of space. Its companions open their own volley, and pockmarks of white hot luminescence cascade over the Hive ship as impacts equivalent to atomic weapons ripple over its armor, glittering against the ebbing light of the setting star.

Enemy reinforcements will be incoming. We have no reason to believe we can get away with boarding a hive ship. Remember, we're hear to rescue a friendly queen and her forces. Try to disable Hive ship to stop it from escaping, then finish the enemy fleet and only later board.

You can see the wings begin to fold forward, and you can sense the rising cry of its drive as the Hive ship charges to blink away, but such a large craft takes a long time to charge, and you do not need a long time with the numbers you brought.

You sense the frustration of the Obsidian Queen. Her rage offers a sense of schadenfreude as your ships close the distance.

"Thing is leaving. Mother says stay!"

The ship's wings rupture as it is riddled with slugs and the energy of particle beams boils away the flesh. The muscles snap, and the tendons burn to ash. The wings snap back, sending burning flesh and flash-boiled blood scattering as they snap off and are sent tumbling away. The Hive ship screams in panic and pain as its surface is burned away, your strike craft targeting its weapons and maneuvering thrusters. You can feel the Queen's anger wash over you, as if she is trying to harm you with her hate alone as her weapons snap under the weight of your fleet.

A moment later, there is a flash of light as your main force arrives. It had truly arrived at the same time as your first wave, but the light is only now reaching the battle. The fleets are quickly accelerating, racing behind the light serving as their herald. A moment later a high velocity impactor erupts against the hull of the last enemy cruiser, fired from a hive ship as it closes in on the battle at relativistic speeds. The velocity is great enough to envelop the ship in fire. A moment later several more impactors detonate against various hulls and silently speed past the conflict. Several detonate in the atmosphere of the planet, casting the night time surface in a harsh light as your heavy fighters decelerate to engage.

The enemy Hive ship drifts helplessly as your fleet burns its escort. It fills the space around it with the shrapnel of chitin slugs, but its weapons are picked away by your swarmers and torched by your fighters. The ship enters an unstable orbit as the corpses of its companions begin to glow in the heat of reentry. It will join their fate in a few more orbits.

Your own ships have taken damage from the Hive ship's defenses, but you count no losses. The sheilds of most of your smaller ships have fallen, and glancing blows mark long scars along your battlecruisers.

We should attempt to hail the planet first.

Also the question is, can we only learn of Obsidian tech from the ship, or can we also repair it and use it for ourselves considering it's a rival hive?

I think now would be a good time to reiterate the current plans for anyone who came by too late.

Tonight being a holiday, I plan on running that makeup thread tonight. Since it's already almost 7 in the morning, I think now is a good, and suspenseful stopping point we can resume in a few hours.

My current plan is to go right to sleep, and then tonight around 7PM eastern we will resume, potentially with another double thread, only without a day advance to focus more on the side events we have been otherwise leaving behind lately.

The battle of Refuge will conclude after we all get some much needed rest. I'll try to stick around for a bit before heading off for some sleep myself, and will update the twitter when I wake up. Is that good with everyone?

Spinal Mount (x1): Ramming Keel 50N 200M

Auxiliary (X8): Plasma Lance 80M
Armor: Conductive 150N 500M
Utility: Cloaking Shields 50N 150M
Utility: Rapid Damage Control 15N 20M
Module: Harpoon 10N 200M
Module: Boarding pod launcher 50N 100M
Total Cost: 575N 2140M

Incidentally, what happened to the ships we've decided to build in the past several threads? I notice they aren't

>>42349041
Yes, as I very briefly mentioned, the time I normally spend managing those this week was instead spent on the side of the road after my carburetor died. On the bright side, it is saving you money on upkeep.

>>42349064
On a side note, the insulators seem to be similar in function to whatever it is the Union is using to "contain" the Mirage's power source. It seems the builder was stumbling down the same research track by chance, which does happen. You unlocked your new shield tech without studying Scavenger shields, for example. All factions have a chance to unlock the same tech from totally different methods, or simply overlook them.
>>
>>42349093
I wonder if we could trade the research for spacecities to Heretic (and maybe Unity) since Heretic is devoted to making the Skyl a nomad space-faring race now
>>
>>42349084
>the same thing they've been doing all along
That's like declining to choose a new research subject because it's "the same thing" as existing research.

It's an entirely new opportunity for unlocking new things that existing efforts simply don't accomplish. QD said Thinkers don't have a 100% track record for unlocking new tech trees. This fills in those gaps.

Not mandatory, but for diplomatic brownie points. Since sharing what we know of OQ's tactics would make them better prepared to attack or defend against OQ themselves.

The end goal is not about whether it's mutual defense or offense, the end goal is the OQ going down. Sharing that intel would speed up this process, albeit for a bit.

Do you get the logic of the hive yet?

So yeah, I don't understand your point of view in not sharing the intel. Are you too afraid for any one of our ally to backstab us?

Let's see. Theseus has obviously been attacked by the OQ, and that hampers his goal of research. So OQ is seen as an obstacle and an enemy to Theseus. We also hate OQ. Thus our goals align.

Then we have Heretic, whose race was wiped by OQ. Heretic got beef with OQ. We got beef with OQ. Thus our goals align.

So in this OQ hateclub alliance, we're all up for dishing some concentrated hate on OQ. The others will soon know of our fight one way or another. Now, us not sharing means we might have ulterior motives other than OQ, and thus making the alliance unstable with doubt.

See what your folly has ferried us to?

You know what i hate? Stomach cramps, i'm having some really bad ones right now while i'm shitting out my intestines

>>42349385
Oh dude that sounds awful, gut aches and nausea are the worst. Did you eat something a Taidaren would go for? Hope that clears up before the next thread man.
>>
>>42349381
Hell, even for post-OQ.
Heretic wants to remove squid (and de-crystal monkeys) and rebuild Skyl. We are slowly working on tracking down things for the former and have made the latter at all possible, with further offers to help on the table.
Theseus wants research and for Union to not bother him, plus some interests in Union manipulation. We're working with him on all that again.

And lastly, we're not shortlived humans in which everybody in charge will change in half a century. We are immortal and won't just do a 180 on the past connections.

Should we offer Medium Exosuits to the Commonwealth further on? Like only a select few for elite squads of Commonwealth commandos for use against Scavs?

To prevent them reverse engineering it we wouldn't give it to them full time but rather allow them to "rent" it out from us during -joint- operations so if they do fall we can collect the wreckage.

>>42349396
Yeah i think it's my IBS acting up because of the stress of moving to another part of the country and college bs with a lot of new people
>>42349397
i think it might have been the ham i had for breakfast
>>42349419
it truly is, i got really warm, sweaty and dizzy and it feels like someone has his hand in my stomach twisting around my intestines while someone is kicking me at the same time, i'm just glad that i get small breaks in between the cramps

First thing on agenda for the thread better be podsploration after the battle.

Although the prospect of finding void shards in human planets by listening for their whispers just got rather less plausible now that we know they perfected psionic insulators.

We still need to actually see what the galaxy has to offer.

>>42349558
Not really seeing the point, we can use the suits ourselves. And can probably just hog the whole land theatre to ourselves with our swarms.

You know, if OQ tries to destroy the relay at the last moment by commanding one of her drones to injure it.

We could try and revive it with parasites and medical paste, or a Large Bio-tank.

Revive it just as it has a disruptor clamp down on it.

Is encryption not in use on radio transmissions or is the hive just breaking all the codes effortlessly.

Every single time humans talk to each other over radio we can understand what they're saying.
>>

Could be a nice ruse if she thinks that it's dead, but we recover it, hide it with psi-jammers and then turn off the jammers just in time for the disruptor to connect.
>>
>>42349834
they aren't aware that we are listning to them yet. hence we can get in easily.
>>
>>42349834
We figured their entire LANGAUGE from zero in a couple minutes with ONE thinker.

We have thousands of them now.
Codes aren't worth shit.
>>
>>42349837
If it's dead OQ is already blind, it's hidden already by definition since it was her sole connection to the area.
>>
>>42349858
jammers are so that she won't recover a connection with it once we heal it. So that the disruptor will be a surprise.

>Valen space

Now, this is a story all about how
Our life got flipped-turned upside down
And we'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
we'll tell you how we became princes of the star Balkilare

In west New Tokyo hatched and raised
In the dumpsters was where we spent most of our days
Wallowin' in trash, relaxin' all cool
And stealin' kids' leftovers outside of the school
When a couple of squids who were up to no good
Started making trouble in our neighborhood
We got in one little fight and Matron got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie out in Balkilare'

Stop trying to boast to the ais, its getting old.

Boast, my chitinous ass! It shows that the OQ was ill-prepared for that type of attack. That OQ had little planetary defense aside from ground troops. She had no surface-to-orbit weaponry, and relies on her fleet patrols. In the hands of Heretic and Theseus, this is valuable intel.
