"THIS is Masami?!" The monster, covered head to toe in spikes, stops.
"It's fine, she's not going to hurt you." Maeda tries to console him.

"Um." I'm really confused right now.
Then Kaori walks over to him, starts talking with him, and he reaches for her head.
"HEY!" I shout at him, he immediately recoils.

"How does this help!?" I snap at Ryouta and Maeda.
That's the monster's cue to run back, hiding in the hallway.

I am Itsukuma Masami.
And..
My friends say they have a plan to take down Asai? I don't know what it is. But I'm kind of skeptical.

"Masami! Chill!" Kaori glares at me.

Maeda and Ryouta are also glaring at me.

"What? What did I do?"
"Masami.." Ryouta sighs, "This is the monster that made the bracelets."
"And you just scared him." Kaori is pouting.

"How is that my fault?"
"Well you didn't have to be so loud!"

"You know him already, Kaori?" Maeda tries to lighten the mood.
"Well, we lived in the same mansion." She tries to see where the monster went. "Tarou is the twin of Jurou, that big guy back at the mansion with the huge fists. They were once one monster, but father split them into two. Tarou got the brains, Jurou got the brawn."

"Also," She suddenly seems unamused. "Tarou is a huge coward. As far as I know, he's been living in the basement for the last couple of years. I tried taking him outside once, and he nearly clawed my arm trying to get away."

"Seriously?" I'm skeptical on how he can help.
"We just found him wandering around. Why did he come outside now?"

"Who knows." Kaori sighs.

"In any case," I try to steer the topic back onto course. "How is he going to help anyone?"

"Masami! Weren't you listening!? He made the card devices!"
"Those haven't been really helpful so far."
"And-! He was making an even better version before the chairman was injured! One that didn't even need cards!"

"How is that even possible?" My stare blanks. "I thought the way all of this card stuff worked is that you needed a card to use it's powers."

"I thought so too!" Ryouta stands up, "But this monster says that using magic with a card is going through a kind of middle-man. And there are ways to use it directly."
I sigh, "That sounds fishy. And he sounds like a liar."

"I- Um." Kaori starts to say something, but then stop herself.
"What? Do you know something about this?"

"Taoru doesn't seem like the kind of monster to lie, he'd probably be too scared of getting caught."
"Well, granted. But-"
Kaori tries to find the right words,
"Father was searching for a way to use magic without using cards. He didn't like having to go through Asai and Mom for new cards, because it made him think Asai had something over him. I knew he was looking for a way around it, but I didn't know what."

"So you think this monster might know how to do it? How did you even meet him?"

"I just found him wandering around outside of school the other day."

I cross my arms, "That was your big plan for preparing? You waited until someone wandered around outside?"
"No! No. Of course not." Ryouta suddenly seems like he doesn't know what else to say.

"What he means is," Maeda lightly taps her brother's head. "He seemed lost and was looking for someone. He wasn't outright attacking anybody, but he was scaring the kids. When we asked what his problem was, we found out."

"Huh. Looking for someone?"
"Jurou is his brother, maybe something happened to him?" Kaori crosses her arms.

"At any rate, I don't see the harm in trying to work with him. He doesn't seem evil."

>What do you think, Kaori?
>I'm against this idea.

"I don't know." I say, with worry in my voice. "Kaori, what do you think?"

"As far as I know, he was kept in the basement most of his life. I'm not sure why he decided to come outside, but it must have been harsh on him." Kaori crosses her arms. "If he really is here because he's looking for his brother, than he probably isn't hostile. He probably just wants his brother back."

"So?"
"I say yes. I think it doesn't hurt to hear him out."

"Okay!" I stand up and clap my hands together. "Then I'm all for this idea!"
"Really? Just like that?"

"Well Kaori says that it's okay, then it must be okay. Right?"
"I don't know if that's how it should really work."
"Then it's settled!"

I hop from my chair and try to peer down the hallway, hoping to catch a glance of that monster.
"Hellllooooo? Mister Monster?"
"His name is Taoru."
"Sorry, Mister Taoru? I didn't mean to scare you, you can come back now!"

Silence.

"Mister Taaaaaaooooooooruuuuuuuuuuuuuu-"
"G-give him a moment, Masami. Don't be too pushy."

"..Did he just leave?"
"No! He probably doesn't like that you're trying to goad him so thoroughly!" Kaori scolds me.

We wait a couple more minutes, still nothing.

"Uh oh." Kaori looks worried.
"Okay, I'll go look in the hallway, you go check the bushes, Maeda." Ryouta stands up.
"And I'll go check-"

"Masami, No. No no. Stay right here, Masami."
"But-"

"We don't want to scare him more than we already have."

"Yeah, and he's probably wandering around school now, maybe scaring people."

But I could find him really quickly! Maybe!

Kaori, Ryouta, and Maeda stand up and leave. I'm left sitting at the meeting table listening to the birds and the wind through the courtyard.

I'm bored.

Bored, bored, nothing to do.
What is taking them so long? They have to have been gone at least ten minutes by now.

I look down at my phone.
Forty seconds have passed.

Why is reality such a bully?

Oh! Right! Phone! I need to see if Mom is back. Mom went to save Cirrus, and if she isn't back yet, I need to go save Mom! Save Cirrus! Save Mom! Perfect!

I tap a few tiles on my phone and hit send. Then I wait.
And wait-
And wait.
Oh no, why isn't Mom replying? Is something wrong!? Did something go wrong!? Something went wrong, didn't it!?

I check my phone's time again.
Two minutes have passed.

Arms crossed, pout.

Suddenly, my phone vibrates!
I pick it up, expecting to hear sweet news of my new sister's rescue!

"Busy."

..

"AWWW!" My face hits the table. "Now I want to go after Mom more than ever.."

"Um.. Um.." A new voice trembles.

I raise my head to be greeted again with the monster. He's taken a defensive, almost scared posture.
"Um.." He looks as if he's going to bolt toward the hallway any minute now.

>"Calm down! It's fine! "
>Say nothing
>"It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you."
>"The other monsters were really asking for it."
>"Why are you here? Why did you come to school!?" With an accusing finger

The monster and I stare at one another. I try to think of something that may not result in him wanting to jump up and run away, but I find myself unable to come up with anything.

I raise my hand to wave at him, and he immediately recoils.
My hand gently sways back and forth, he slowly starts to calm down.

Is he.. panting? I didn't know monsters even breathed. Weird.

I continue to say nothing, but instead try waiting him out. He came over here for a reason, and I'm sure it wasn't to fight me. Instead, he's trying to make conversation with me.
He seems to have problems finding the words, though.

"Hey." I say, as gently as I can. He almost jumps out of his metallic skin when I do.
"I'm not going to hurt you. It's okay."

Slowly, he moves over to the chair across from me. Instead of sitting down, he instead chooses to stand behind it.
Watching me.

"Um, didn't you come here to ask something?"

"N- Well. Yes."

"What was it?"

He's silent again.
It's hard to imagine someone who must be made entirely out of steel could be nervous about anything.

>Are you here to ask about the bracelet thing?
>I have a couple questions about it.
>How does it work without cards?
>Let's just wait here for someone else to return, they can explain things better.

Quietly taking out my phone, I tap the tile on the front for Maeda's number.
At the same time, I try to pre-occupy him so he doesn't run off again.

"Okay, feeling better?"
"Um."

"That's good!" I interrupt him before he starts on the scaredy-cat bit again. "So, can you tell me something?"

"H-hold on. I want to ask something first."

"Um, okay?"

"Why did you kill Emillion!?"

..
"I didn't kill Emillion!"
"He's not home anymore, he disappeared after you left."

Wait, he thinks Emillion-
OH.

"Um, Tenuro?"
"Taoru."
"Emillion isn't dead! He's living at my house now!"

"I heard the whole story. He cracked into pieces and you took the largest piece away, like a trophy."

The 'largest piece'?
"Jurou has been sulking ever since then, so I went out to find it so we could give it a proper burial."
"Woh! Hold on! That 'largest piece' IS Emillion! That's him! He's a human now!"

"He's not a human, though."
"He became one!"
"That's impossible."

This is the monster that supposidly knows the most about magic? This is the one that made the bracelets? I'm really skeptical now.
"Can we talk about something else real fast. I promise to show you Emillion later."
"Fine."

"How are you able to use magic without the cards? Kaori, erm, Magician said that something was being worked on that could?"

"Do you want the specifics of it, or-" He seems more calm, now.
"Make it as simple as possible!"

"It's magic."

"No, no I mean a little more complicated than that."

"It uses a time-space distortion created by the cards to-"
"Less complicated, please?"

"It's magic."

I'm skeptical.

>Ask him HOW it works, like, is it like the bracelet before?
>Ask him what it does instead
>Just wait for someone else to get here that can explain it
>I don't know anymore.
