You choose a race and a location (already done), then the op puts us in a survival situation where we are in charge of a civ ( in this case insects on floating islands)

Basically we just say what we wanna do and roll for it then see what happens
>>
The Kashtha expanse. A large area in which our kind thrived, we were separated when the ground shook and we were raised from it, sent into the sky. We came from the edge of our colony, small in number with no queen to lead us. A kind of hibernation kicked in until now. A new queen has spawned from our strongest collector and our warriors have awoken.

We find ourselves floating on earth, some of our kind dug down in hopes of making a burrow. Sadly with being close to the edge it seems they plummeted.

The Queen leads all, we have 120 warriors, 350 collectors and 40 scouts. The queen is large and requires consistent attention from our collectors, the warriors are large bigger than those green things called orcs and have both spikes and claws on their chitinous limbs. The collectors are around the size of kobalts, skittering around with quick movements to gather what is needed. The scouts have wings? No, not wings but similar things, these allow them to glide down but not fly up. They could leave, but they would not abandon the new queen.

The queen and brood do not hunger yet, they will soon enough. Chose TWO actions per turn.

The Queen commands us and we listen, 20 warriors and all of our scouts head out to the North. We pass over grass and meet trees, thick trunks but not tall. Almost twice the height of our warriors. We explore this place in search of suitable prey. We find nothing but birds, hard to catch but many. We also spot small creatures, like rabbits but they crawl up the trees as if it was ground.

Once we reach a point where we cannot see out of this forest we hear skittering, almost like our collectors but... different, another brood? We search for what made these noises but we find nothing.

We itch, we writhe. This new environment requires us to adapt. The Queen calls us all to one. In a single mass we claw and spit and scream. Our skin flays itself and our bodies change, our backs split and wings spread. Thin, but powerful.

Our new form will help, our warriors are not good with using their wings, but will be able to traverse. Our collects buzz in the air sometimes slamming into one another and falling unconscious... this will take time to get used to. However our scouts show much promise with their new found appendages, they hold great finesse.

The Queen congratulates the scouts, they seem pleased. The collectors seem to sulk.

After our change the Queen demands food. We agree and rise.

All of our scouts, 20 warriors and 50 collects head to the north forest, the only location we know of that has game to hunt. The warriors would not be able to fly well enough to catch the climbing rabbits, our scouts and collectors however could.

With great finesse the hunt divulges into a game. The scouts and collectors competing to catch the most, while the warriors stand guard. The hunt goes very well, aside from some collectors almost killing one another with their poor flight control. Several hundred tree rabbits later and some birds, every collector and scout carries something back.

Transporting these back to the nest is easy but long work. Soon the collectors, all three hundred and fifty of them set off in a massive shower of dirt under the ground, this time not going deeper than ten feet. Having dug a multitude to good sized rooms most come up to start survive work, using stones as boundaries and the twigs as ramps somewhat surrounding the nesting area. The rest of the wood is shredded by the warriors claws and scattered around once softened by secretions

The Queen orders us east to scout. All of our scouts converge and fly high. We encounter no dangers along the way and come to a somewhat swampy area. This place is rich in bramble and critters. With out speed it could easily become a very good hunting ground. We also find shiny things inside of the swampy waters.

We watch the scouts leave before the Queen issues another order. A fight among ourselves. We're wary of this but we listen and obey the Queen. We are paired up against one another and told to fight to the best of our ability.

Several fights are initiated at once for the first wave of spars. We claw and bite at one another, our naturally sharp weapons pierce each others strong chitin leaving them slumped over and dead. This only took a few moments to take place... The Queen seems angry? We only did as we were told!

Soon we were sent back to the nest.

The Queen hungers! We bring her the corpses of the things we hunted. She devours them with need, soon she begins laying eggs, specialized to kill. Twenty hunter eggs are now in the hatchery portion of the Queens Den.

Soon after this the Queen lets her voice run throughout our minds.

'I must adapt, using the creatures already here shall allow me to thrive of this land. Bring creatures alive to me!'

We skatter, we go the Queens command. With the finesse of our scouts it is easy to catch the rabbits. The birds however do not easily get snatched from the sky. Unfortunately some of the rabbits die, fortunately we have a little more food.
+30 Rabbits

Once these creatures are brought to the Queen she disconnects her mind from the colony. We feel worried and strangely alone while this occurs, some of the brood circle nothing, others scratch at the floor, some freeze.

The Queen stares at the creatures as they cower, surrounded as to stop any attempt at escape. After almost half a day of silence, the creatures sit on their haunches and the Queen reconnects to the colony. She brings news of a new evolution, opening our connection towards the hive mind to the rabbit creatures. It... is strange. We feel their angst but we feel the Queen give them comfort as she gives comfort to us. It seems we now have instinctual communication with this kind of creature, but only within the outer rim of our colony.

Our food would be depleted soon, the Queen demands a large hunt! We obey!

Two Hundred Collectors, all but Ten of our scouts and Forty warriors all rally and head off for a large scale hunt. At first every collector and scout attempts to fly, this ends with around thirty collectors unconscious on the floor. After an hour of reorganization the groups split into two, one heading for the north reaches of the swamp and the other to the south.

Half of the collectors walk and the other fly to avoid collisions... The Queen ordered this. We agree.

North- The hunt begins! We all spread out, warriors on watch for any trouble. The critters fall from the surrounding tactics of our collectors and the sheer speed and agility of our Scouts. However amphibious creatures jump from the waters and start attacking our collectors! The warriors rush in to slaughter them!
>Roll 1d20 for outcome

South- This group seemed to contain the same collectors that hunted the rabbits to the north. They chitter and speak through the hive-mind in challenge. They split into two groups along with the scouts splitting to compete for the most catches. This goes quite well! However the warriors do seem to roll many eyes.

The Warriors propel themselves forward while the Collectors scatter into the air, some colliding with one another but not falling from the air.

The Amphibious creatures seem to be similar to alligators but with a smaller snout and humanoid with extremely strong legs to propel themselves out of the water for surprise attacks. They use these to attempt to snap at the scattering collectors. This only leads to the rushing warriors impaling several of them before beginning a slaughter. Around 15 of these things attacked and 14 got butchered.

With the swamp painted a redish purple we collect all that was hunted along with the corpses of these things before heading south. Hunting along the way before reaching the south group.

The south group has done extremely well, the competition has increased overall critters caught. With the night approaching both groups head back to the hive, A good hunt completed.

We reach consensus of our hunting competitions... By consensus we mean we begged the Queen and she gave us permission. We love the Queen.

The Queen demanded us to dig soil and gather stones, even having the strong warriors carry the large ones... Warriors! Doing manual work! We feel strange about this, so do the warriors but the Queen demands it. Bringing in these resources seems to go well and soon we've amassed piles of both rock and soil.

Then the Queen demanded we be set to work building a... 'wall?' Those things humaniods used back down... well, down. We do as we're told, setting 200 of our collectors onto this job with flurries of movement the hives becomes heavy with activity.

The Queen demands more food! We skitter and skatter, bringing her the last rabbits and a bunch of critters, she devours them without restraint soon laying more eggs while the others hatch into strong warriors!

The Queen wishes to play with the rabbit things, lucky the ones we took from the forest hadn't been eaten by a warrior so she used those, getting them in front of her and disconnecting from the Hive once more. For the whole day she toyed with their minds, picking apart their instincts. Its slow, methodical and boring but she endures this. It is for the well being of her children. Sadly, by the time night came the rabbits were limp drooling messes without any ability to control their own bodies.

As this occurred the collectors and scouts decided to attempt to improve their flight, mostly the collectors, we can't be knocking ourselves out all the time after all. The flight patterns start slow and become more complex over time, it's strange without the connection to the hivemind but we also endure.

The Queen realized we initiated the improvement of our abilities. She disapproved until she realized we were getting results. This resulted in praise and we got her tutelage. By that we mean she organised us and improved the connections we shared with one another for the time of the research. We're getting much better, even the already agile scouts seem to be better at dodging the collectors that seem to want to smash everything in the air with their faces. This will take a while to spread around. (Next Turn it completes)

The Queen demanded we scout further ahead, probably because of the chittering we heard in the forest. Half of our scouts head off in formation.

Five of them return.

We speak of a mountain? rocky hill? Yes, rocky hill to the very north. There were bugs there, unlike us. All of them were as small as our collectors though they had hard shells that split open to reveal wings. They had almost a hundred chase our scouts, killing them as we fled. We also saw a river, heading from the rocky mountain hill thing to our west.

Improve tech (weaponry) Dropping objects from the air ontop of stuff gives a simple ranged attack. if the object is heavy enough or numberous enough (say a collection of rocks for instance.) it could do some good damage.. if we can keep our brood flying higher then the others it might be enough to hurt their wings and send them falling to the ground if we get in a fight with them. also we need to get more to our brood since there are hostiles able to kill our scouts around so we should gear up to fight them.

After the flight has been completed the Queen demands we test what we can fight with... Not using our claws and teeth. We got confused before she clarified that she wanted us to attempt to use the environment. She told us to place rocks out of our Nest and attempt to break them in any way that we could. This led to us fumbling around for half of the day before a Warrior rammed one of them with force, cracking both it and its head.

We needed things hard and strong to break them, so we used OTHER rocks naturally. Dropped from a good height. It worked... eventually when we hit the rocks together. It'll take some time to get our aim right, research is underway.

The Queen had the warriors gather around her Den and making a greater connection to them.

The Warriors feast on the critters before secreting a strange ooze around themselves. Their flesh ripped open before knitting back together, writhing around on the ground and screaming in agony to the hive mind

We gave them comfort, we listened to their cries. We soothed their worries and they woke anew. The Queen gave them instruction, their bodies purpose. Their flesh listened to her whims and shifted allowing thicker chitin to grow.

The chitin glistened, looking as new as the day they hatched. What the Queen planned came to fruition, thicker chitin to hold out against attacks.

The threat they pose in combat is highly increased. Sadly they are much heavier, unable to fly for long periods of time. Traversing to another sky island to the surface is impossible for them. As much as it is for the queen.

Our Collectors and Scouts have spread the improved flight around the colony, we now have better overall reactions and speed within the air.

The Eggs hatch, new scouts and warriors without the strong chitin are born.

The Queen demands a new way to gain food! We remember the humans, the lands of food stretching far and wide. We plan to attempt this! We send scouts into the edge of the forest to bring back any edible food. Then the Queen directs us on how to use the ground. Digging it up, moving it around, we must test these different ways. It might work... (50, 100, or 200 collectors set to this research?)

The entirety of our scouts and 100 collectors head north to hunt. 10 normal warriors and 10 strong chitin warriors come for protection. The hunt goes moderately well, much more so now that we can catch the birds here easily due to the improvement of our wings. Not to mention the competition drives us to work harder. We head back to the hive with many-a good catch.

The Queen feasts on 100 food, laying 50 Collector eggs in return.

We get orders to improve our walls, spaces where we can stand and keep watch! We move out and collect more dirt and stone. The only things we have available. Construction seems to be going smoothly and is underway.

We send out our scouts to the West along with some warriors. We find a reasonably sized lake, some of the water seems to fall from the edge of the floating island. Looking upon the water it seems fresh and unclouded from dirt. Where the water flows from the mountain and into the lake there are strange, big yellow colored bearing fruit. They are oblong, purple and have green triangular spots. Very strange.

On our way back to the Nest we spot a human head on the ground, approaching it turns out to be stone. Also strange.

The Queen demands we share our knowledge on this... farming, with those who will dig and make the land where our crops will grow. We do just that, helping them along in the construction. To west, nearer the lake. We recall humans using water and lakes on their crops somehow. This will be require research less we destroy our soon to grow crops. (Farms are under construction)

With all this building of things the Queen demands we all commune in the Hivemind, she forcibly expands it. We hurt as this happens but we endure for the colony. Once she has finished we feel... portions in the hivemind where thoughts might be stored, we mix them into indecipherable junk. The Queen wipes it clear and tells the collectors to learn to use this, to plan with one another and her more reliably on the expansion of the colony. The Queen calls for our brood to gather more rabbits, we catch several with a very quick expedition by our fast scouts. She has them lined up before disconnecting from the hive mind once more. Staring at each in turn, they twitch and shiver but she seems content with each movement. Several hours pass before the Queen reconnects. Speaking to us all, mostly directed to the collectors. She speaks of a forced connection, separate from the hive mind. She grants us this ability and we attempt it. Primal, scared, wrong, surrounded, RUN, PANIC, FREEZE. Are the ideas and thoughts we read from the rabbits. It's like a torrent of bunched up thoughts, this will take time to master. (Tech Mind Reading is in development)

The Queen demands we examine the threat of these northern bugs. The scouts head off into the sky splitting into several groups by the queens orders.

They return during the night. These bugs with hard shells have dug into the rocky mountain, making it their home. They use this hight to watch the forest, swamp and river. It was hard for our scouts to get close. Luckily with their agility they all managed to get close. This bug colony has six-hundred workers, we know not of their fighting force.

The remaining 50 Collectors and 35 Scouts alongside 60 Strong Chitin warriors are ordered to head to the north east portion of the swamp to collect those humanoid things and bring them back. We obey and head off.

During the travel in the swampy area the drones and scouts have a small competition, hunting some critters as game.

Soon the scouts spot a large collection of the alligator humanoids. They rush around the sky, higher than the crocs can jump as a distraction. The drones pick up what stones they can find in the swamp before flying up, bombarding these things a moment before our warriors rush in. With thick chitin it's almost impossible for anything but their limbs to be punctured by the jaws of the enemy. Soon, most are subdued. Many were killed however.

We get back to the nest and realize we have no place to hold these... things and we are sure they could jump over the walls. /tg/ dice have gone straight to fucking crazy town
>>
Our scouts head off to the northwest. Across the edge of the lake and past the strange trees with weird-ass fruit. We find a large expanse, like the plains between us and the north forest. Here there are hundreds upon thousands of mounds. We quickly realize these are made from creatures than live under the soil. Fairly large but we do not think they are threatening. The ground here is very rich, we also spot a fairly large grove of trees to the southern portion of the plain. The wood looks strong, however it will be hard to bring it across the river and lake. If only we had the mountain area under our control.

Strangely we spot... a sheep. A herd of sheep, with wings. Our scouts return, bringing this news.

The Queen demands we replenish our food stock! We obey! All free 200 collectors scatter alongside warriors and scouts heading to the east hunting grounds. The competition is strong and our desire to be the best of our kind rules. This assists us as we flow throughout the swamp, wading in the water and flying both. We feel at home in this swamp now, we know it's secrets. We know where our prey cowers from us, we find and slaughter them. The hivemind is filled with glory. The Queen is delighted.

+1600 Critters

The Queen calls to the collectors working in the fields, directly assisting them throughout the hive mind. We use the memory banks of the hive mind to share our best methods of tilling and planting our crops. It works wonders, as one unit as a whole we move over the fields. Creating life from the earth. Assuming being humanoid has any advantage mentally to a rabbit I'd like to exploit that advantage. Fuck their brains until they're drooling like the rabbits but learn from how their nervous systems are set up to give us better group control. They also have the ability to overlap sensory information with other insights in their memory. We could learn to do that in the hive. They can function with contradictory organ systems for above and below water. That would assist with leading several types of troops at once. Also if we weaken their minds we may be able to teach a weaker unit to conquer a smaller mind. Start teaching psionics.

>11 (Improve Hivemind)

The Queen orders us to bring several of the humanoids into her domain, we do so with guards. The prisoners kneel before her might... Probably because we kicked them forwards. Still, they kneel before her might and we wait. She disconnects from the hivemind, attempting to bridge a connection to the humanoid. This takes hours before she returns to the hivemind. She informs us that these things are not very smart. Animals compared to us, but more complex than critters or rabbits. She then builds onto the connection she formed with the group, forcing them into the hivemind consensus. We all move at them, their unprotected minds not used to the glory of a greater connection. We overwhelm them and they collapse screaming in agony only to fall silent and lifeless. It seems this is a very strange thing, perhaps bringing them into the main body of the hivemind is not a good idea. The Queen could personally connect to them however. (Failure)

16 (Evolve)

The Queen is annoyed with the failure of the hivemind. We are ashamed even thought it is not our fault. She commands all prisoners to be brought to the nest as well as the whole colony. The bodies too. We look to them as they cower. The order to feast is given! We scream our hunger throughout the hivemind, a change is coming! We amass onto the flesh of our prey butchering and devouring them piece by piece. The colony balls up before secreting the evolution gel. Our flesh is ripped open and chitin softens. We cry in pain and the Queen comforts us, giving our being directions, our chitin slickens and forms once more hard. Our leg-limbs stronger than before and our color murky like that of the former alligators.

+ Camouflage (Swamp)

Our testing with the bunnies comes to fruition, we can read the minds of simple creatures. Know their instincts when close. This is improve hunting somewhat, perhaps aid in becoming... 'friendly' with them. This Queen is strange. We love her.

Not unlike fireflies these oversized bugs fly slowly and with much wingflapping. Unlikely to gain much altitude or even keep up with a fast moving squad these troops have evolved a psychic connection with the light emiting parts of their form. The light which comes from under their body also emits a physic pulse which can be heard throughout the hive, even while otherwise disconnected from it.

This "psychic pulse" has practical applications in that it can be used to avoid being psychicly dominated by releasing "noise" which keeps anyone from connecting. This noise can also be used to sever the connection between a group that is connected to a distant hivemind. It can also charm enemies by sending the pulse in pleasing rhythms of in sync with creatues movements and thoughts.

These actions are biological and will need training and experience to learn how to really use their powers.

The Queen demands that we bring her food. Lots and lots of food! We skitter around collecting the flesh to feed to her. She tells us we will have new family members. They will be those that guide us and strengthen the hivemind! We praise her and our collectors pay more attention to her. The eggs are large, almost as big as a warriors! She lays ten of these, using much more food than she normally would to lay eggs. Then she fills up the rest of the egg chamber with 40 scout eggs.

-50 Food from New Brood Eggs
-80 Food from Scout Eggs

We send scouts into the sky in all directions but south. We wonder the forest, the swamp and the lake. The rabbits that are not rabbits and climb trees seem to have flexible bodies, we could develop this trait, sacrificing our chitin in return. They also have claws designed to sink into the wood. Strong. We find that the critters can move in fast bursts of speed, nothing compared to the agility of our improved flight, but it could help on the ground. They also can stay under water for very long periods of time.

The scouts return with their observations, sharing once they reconnect to the colonies hivemind.

maybe later we could make another type?. could help with mining and building stuff, as well as ambushes.

This kind of brood looks abit like a cross between a preying mantis and a spider. it has no wings and cannot fly but its scythe like limbs from its upper body serve both as dangerous blades and useful digging tools. they are capable of producing very strong silken cables like a spider as well as producing a kind of glue also like a spider. and like a spider they can crawl on walls and ceilings easily. They are good at making traps and nets out of their webbing. they have a set of their spider limbs on their upper torso to use as hands, not just their mantis blades. they are good at holding their breath and can make good tunnelers as they see easily in the dark and have good hearing and long hair like protrusions all over their body to feel where the terrain is. and to avoid getting lost in tunnels they can spray chemical markers like ants to leave smell-able messages and leave a trail they can follow out.

ideally we would want to collect a preying mantis a spider and an ant. or something similar to them, before attempting to create this. small creatures might not be much for food but they could still have very useful traits we could use. we should have our brood keep an eye out for them.

seams our workers are busy. lets send our scouts to look for creatures with useful traits. as well as any useful plants that might be good to try and farm for food. also lets let them know to look for very tiny stuff such as insects too. because stuff does not need to be big to have useful tricks. if they find any particularly good ones and can capture them alive with out risk to themselfs. they should probably do so. plus foraging a wide assortment of interesting plants would be nice because then we could test them to see which produces the best yield in food production.
so basically a "lets find interesting and probably small stuff and haul it home for study and experimentation" exploration mission.

and lets send a small number of our scouts and some of our warriors to go investigate that shiney object. it could be useful or interesting. but it might also be dangerous and we should be prepared for that if we can be.
