Something wakes you, but...upon waking up properly, you're not sure what.

You glance around the room, remembering that you're in Munich now, protecting Dr. Wednesday during his press conference. You're solo, since Iskandir is likely to attack any of the doctors, and SAFEHAVEN can't put all their eggs in one basket.

You walk downstairs after dressing yourself as much as need be (cyborg shit, you know) opening up the door to the conference hall. Glancing up, you see it's just beginning as Dr. Wednesday steps up to the podium.

That's when you and the collective crowd see ten red dots form on his chest.

>[] Run up and get him out of the way!
>[] Get the sniper!

>>

You whip your shield out in a rapid swing, reflecting the ten shots on it's flightpath. It boomerangs back to your wrist, and you glance up for the sniper.

"You know, kid..."

He drops down from the ceiling, coming up from crouching at the knees slowly. He takes a halberd from his back and slams it on the ground beside him.

"It's a lot harder to do my job with douches like you in the world." Iskandir says.

You take out your gladius and shield, breaking open the doors nearby to allow escape for the pedestrians. Iskandir stands motionlessly, his eyes on looking at you.

"Come on, do me a favor and die this time."

With a mighty battlecry, he comes your way, spinning through the air and slamming his halberd against your shield, ripping it almost immediately afterwards from the hole it made and slashing from the opposite side. With not-a-second-too-soon timing, you duck, slashing his arm.

Iskandir hops atop one of the seats for the presentation, hucking it at you. You slice through it and move in for him. He throws another chair, this time slicing it with his halberd to make two projectiles for you. This time, you block with your shield.

Frustrated, he takes out the Arachnado and shows off a new addition: a ripcord.

He pulls on it and lets it fly, literally. The leg portion flies and spins for you. You bring up your shield to block, the legs grinding slower and slower the more you put your shield up.

In another move to make physicists cry, you use the spinning motion of the Arachnado's blades to propel yourself at Iskandir, bashing his face with your shield.

You deliver to quick slashes to his stomach, but Iskandir grabs your head, thrusting it into his knee. He then punches you twice, two quick hooks left and right. With a kick to the chest, he sends you back to the floor, and he jumps at you with a large swing of the halberd, which you roll to dodge.

"I'm just trying to do what's best for me, Caesar! I need those scientists dead so I can live this life of mine!"

"Funny," you say, spitting out blood, "I need you dead so everyone else can move on with theirs. You know, since you became such an asshole."

His eyes widen in rage and he thrusts at you, firing the cable off the tip of the halberd and plunging it into the shield, tearing it away and slamming your chest with the blade. You spurt blood and hit the wall, and he's coming in for another swing.

You duck underneath the blade, letting him embed it in the door behind you. With a quick stab to the pelvis, you rush around him, dragging your blade through his body the whole time, leaving a long streak of blood.

He roars out in pain, forgoing his Halberd to punch you in the stomach and point his Armed and Dangerous up at your face. You narrowly get grazed by the bullets as you dodge and backflip away.

Iskandir runs for you, tackling you through the wall like it was styrofoam. He begins pummeling you as you go up against the second wall. You manage to get enough support against the wall to kick him back in the stomach. This time, he spits out a glob of red, and looks up, grinning.

"Let's go, then. No weapons, not even these stupid gauntlets. Fists only, like men."

You look at him and your own hands before responding.

You slam your knuckles together, dropping your gladius right after.

"Like men." You parrot.

You throw out an immediate right hook, which he ducks under. Iskandir retaliates with an uppercut to your jaw, but you quickly press your fists near your chin to reduce it's blow. You counter that with a quick blow to the stomach and a smacking hook to the cheek as he recoils.

Iskandir wipes his lips with his sleeve, before running at you with an immense swing of his right hand. You dodge, making him embed it into the wall. You take the opportunity to again punch his cheek, leading him to rip his hand from the wall and grab you by the hair, punching you repeatedly in your stomach.

You grimace and writhe in pain with each blow, but you quickly grab Iskandir by the shoulders, flipping over his head and hurling him into the wall, all in the same motion.

"Alright! That one might've stung." He says, grinning with bloody teeth. He pauses momentarily, tapping his hand to his ear.

"Mm. Fine...I still wanted to make him bleed more."

You raise your eyebrow. Didn't...Didn't he work alone?

"Sorry kid, I've got to ship out!"

He runs over, taking his Halberd, and before you know it, he's crashed through the wall and is running for the rooftops.

The Arachnado's blade is all by it's lonesome. You pick it up, as you walk around and find Dr. Wednesday cowering in an equipment locker. You take him out and assure him it's all alright.

You tap for your commlink.

"Miss Hope...Iskandir is working with someone."

"Are you sure...?" She says, voice getting uneasy.

"He was called back by someone. Maybe that's who's been locating the doctors?"

"That would explain the precision on his arrivals...plus, Iskandir was never much of an intellectual."

You ponder for a moment, before communicating again.

"I'll be bringing Wednesday back myself, be back at base in a few hours."

"Understood, over and out." she replies.

You take Wednesday over your shoulder back to your jet and set him in, turning on the autopilot. With a leap, you get on top and cling as it boosts off.

You return Wednesday to base hours later, taking him down to the civilian quarter to make sure he's not too shaken up still.

After another hour passes, you return to the quarter, seeking out the doctor for a few questions. You sit down across a table from him.

"...He's working with someone." you start.

"It's as I feared." the doctor begins. "We...haven't been totally honest with you. There was once, in fact, a Dr. Friday, but he was excommunicated thanks to some...unethical views on test subjects."

"He wanted to subject ordinary people?"

"Worse yet. Turns out he was just fine with those Desperado experiments involving taking the brains of children. In fact, he wanted that first wave of VR-trained cyborgs to be put out with Hemoxin, no field tests whatsoever. It was a unanimous decision from the rest of us that he leave, until we all decided to remove ourselves from that dreadful hellhole."

"So it's Friday, then? Where would he be found?"

"Last I heard, he was traveling unclaimed waters for the sake of his experiments remaining untouched. I know that isn't very helpful, but the man never was good at preventing a paper trail from piling up."

You nod, thanking him and returning to Angie, relaying the same information back to her.

"I see...we'll start tracing any monetary transactions we can and the like. I advise you go to the infirmary...he really beat the hell out of you." she says.

You nod, heading on down and checking in as you await your treatment. As a field operative, you sort of get priority, not that anyone else is waiting. You get taken in by a youthful black-haired woman and seated, where she gives you the standard height-and-weight checkups and all that. As you wait in one of the rooms, you glance about.

"So, are we waiting for the doctor, or..."

"I am the doctor, Caesar."

"Oh. Uh, sorry. You just sort of looked like a nurse."

"No harm, no foul."

You notice the doctor's on her phone, typing something out.

Anyways, what organs you DO still have have sustained some damage, so, we're going to need you on legitimate bedrest. No 'oh well, yeah, I'll let you go under x and y condition' shit. You stay in that bed, you drink water and eat some applesauce, and you get fucking better, got it?"

"Isn't 'fuck' kind of an unprofessional word?"

"You cut people in half for a living, and you call a doctor swearing unprofessional?"

"...Well it IS my profession."

Dr. Paisley just rubs her temples.

"Stay in the damn bed, we'll be moving you in an hour."

"...You're going to be out of here in three days tops. What could possibly go to shit in three days?"

"...A lot of things, actually."

She rolls her eyes, walking out the hallway and coming back in, shoving a headset and laptop computer onto the bed near you.

"There's instructions pre-loaded onto there for how to get onto field operative channels. Figure that shit out on your own. Can I get you a warm glass of milk while I'm at it?"

"I'll take a juice, actually." You say, not getting the sarcasm as you glance at the screen.

Dr. Paisley sits down at her computer, continuing to type.

"Other topics...I heard you got into this facility specifically to get back at Iskandir."

You pause. "He...my brother was an intern at this research facility out in New Mexico. Supposedly they were working on some kind of pacifying substance to insure that POW's wouldn't violently revolt against their captors. He broke in, and..."

She pauses typing and slowly pushes the slab holding the keyboard back in the desk.

"...My kid sister, my father...someone else...they were on a train heading to an expo held by that same Dr. Wednesday you rescued. He made it out when Iskandir came crashing in, but..."

But, look how that's changed, eh? The world really DOES have superheroes, and extraordinary people. And here I am, still paying off college loans and looking at X-rays of people who've lived more action-y lives than me."

"...Well hell, if it weren't for you, I'd probably have run back out there and died of some organ failure."

"Something like that. But, then it would be some other doctor."

"A doctor nonetheless, though." You say.

"Well...shit, yeah, that is true."

"I think of everything in life like...a big machine, filled with lots of cogs. There's a lot of big ones that do pushing, but sometimes, the biggest ones have so many small cogs that people don't even notice are doing this immense amount of work to support them. I think that no matter the size, everyone has something important to contribute."

"That's pretty positive, compared to everyone else on Field Ops."

"Pretty positive compared to everyone here, it would seem. Say, do you think the enemy could plausibly hack some other UG remotely?"

"Oh, well hell yeah. They could break right through the secure connection, supplant their own, and either remote control it or just upload a new AI."

"Huh..." You say.

"UGs are the least of anyone's worries, really. It's...people, you know? Somehow the strength of man is more indomitable than thousands of tons of steel. Well, I think it's about time you went to bed. We don't have much need to move you, so you can stay right where you are now, as it stands."

You roll over to your side and make a vague noise of getting up to spare her the dignity of being embarrassed, to which she closes out her window and gets you out of bed.

But, as you go, turns out...yeah, huh. You don't have to pee. Weird.

You go up to the mirror, looking at yourself. A realization hits you that so what if you're not beautiful? Beauty is more than simply physical looks. It's accomplishment, talent, intelligence, and many other factors you objectively possess. Your body and looks are just fine.

You return to the bed, where the doctor returns after a good twenty minutes, depositing her laptop on the desk from a bag.

"Also, you know, if it helps, I think you're prett--"

"You kissed a boy, Caesar. I really don't need the compliment."

"Even so, I really don't need compliments on my looks."

"...Yeah, well, uh...anyways."

You start up a session of training, using a few training dummies positioned around your UG in order to test it's capabilities. It's alien to not be in-the-moment as you usually are, but some part of you does feel a little better being safer...that being a problem.

The thrill of death actually does drive you, as sick as it is to think. With no sensation of pain, or personal injury, it's difficult, you imagine, to gauge your actual problems on the battlefield.

That's just something to go with your gut on.

"I think I'm good to ship out, if we can get a one-man jet down in the room with my UG."

Paisley taps a button and mutters "Says he's ready."

With that, the jet deploys from the ceiling downwards, and your UG walks towards it, flying out to Oceania on a remote seabase for Dr. Friday.

You would ask that, but, as it would seem on your HUD, there's an option to link up yourself and the UG on a pain front. With about seven warning windows popping up, but you live life on the edge.

You plug yourself in, and run through the mission log message just before you drop off.

You're infiltrating for a clean assassination on Dr. Friday. Unnecessary demises of any workers there are not necessarily frowned upon, but are just that, unnecessary.

You drop off on one of the roofs, and slink through the corridors, taking extra care to make your steps light. With a quick poke around the corners, you see there's no one nearby. The radar offhand on the screen notes that Friday should be nearby, being tracked through an implant in his leg made for balance purposes, ever since a bone disease in his leg made it difficult to walk.

Stepping down from the catwalks into a large room, you look down and see what must be Friday at a computer. You swing down, jumping from steam pipe to steam pipe, and slowly make your way down the wall, approaching him. As your turn him around...

You find his corpse, at least freshly dead for a day.

Clapping greets you from behind.

"Funny thing about orders. I really, really hate when the people giving me them also don't give me what I want."

You turn around, spotting Iskandir and dodging just as he comes slashing through you. He ends up diagonally splitting Friday's body and the chair it was on.

"Even so, he was feeding you information! Why would you kill him so soon?"

"I'm just not smart. It's not like I can't memorize anything." He says, tapping his head. "Soon as he spilled the beans on the other doctors and what ways to locate them, it became a matter of waiting till he pissed me off."

You think carefully on your next move.

This was not part of the plan. Something we're not aware of is going on. We need to know what.

Also, best to run instead of let him know he wrecked us so hard we have to fight via robot.

(Second part of the fourth post I'm quoting interferes with majority vote, but the first bit doesn't, so it goes in.)

"So what's the idea now that he's dead?"

"Same as it always was! Kill all of them so you fuckers have no option for a cure." He says, spinning his halberd idly with one hand.

"Even so, that's it? You just want to stop one group from making a cure? What if someone makes a cyborg superior to you?"

"There isn't a cyborg alive, here and not ever, that can beat me."

Something fires up in your soul.

"You're looking at him." you say.

He scoffs, taking a look at his halberd, as if to say something...instead he charges for you and swings. As you duck under, he points a hand back at you, firing with his left gauntlet. You take out the UG's replica shield and uncollapse it behind you to reflect the bullets, and take the gladius from it's holster to fight him back.

"Caesar Mk II, this is Angie. This is vital. The other members have successfully extracted the other doctors, but we don't know how fast the Conqueror's travel method is. If they aren't in the base, and are still flying, and he finds out...we might have a problem on our hands. We need at least three hours where he's occupied. Can you do that?"

You tap your commlink button on the keyboard. "Already on it."

Three hours. That actually was really fucking daunting, not that you'd admit it.

Even so, you shove your shield forward, hitting him in the chest and then spin around in the air with your gladius for a deep slash in an arc. While he recoils, you charge forward and plunge your blade into his stomach, red blood hitting your blade. He grabs it by the body of the blade, holding it in him, and looking up with a mad grin.

He rolls his head back before slamming it into the UG's, where he looks on to see nothing from the impact come out of you. With that, he smiles even wider.

>(cont.)
>>
>>42438513
"A UG would make me worried...if it weren't for something a little obviously fatal to that scheme."

He takes something out from behind his back...a handful of EMP grenades. With a quick throw, he hurls about five in your direction. You immediately react, swinging to split all five in half, but the distraction lets him charge you, hurl you up in the air, and then grab you for a piloted free-fall into the ground, where he then punts you off to the side.

"Come on, fucker! I want a real challenge! Where's the real Caesar when you need him?"

"Where's...*koff* a real conqueror...when you need him?"

Admittedly the cough was your voiced transmission coming out of the UG, not the thing itself, but it made it more effective, somehow.

His eyes narrow before he comes for you again, taking his halberd and readying for a slam down on the ground, which you roll away from. Grabbing his halberd by the blade and using it to flip onto the tip, you jump off and deck him, letting him fall to the ground.

"Dr. Tuesday has arrived! We're still awaiting Thursday and Sunday!" Angie calls over.

>[] Goad his ego again. That wraps him up nicely.
>[] Go at it normally. The UG probably can't take as much as you.

"Come on Dracula, having problems now that you can't take any blood?"

"Shut up." He says, taking a step forward.

"Not too fun when you can't get a boner from all this bloo--oh, wait, you don't have one down there, do you?"

"Shut up!" He quickens his pace.

"Beetle was wrong. You're not pretty."

"SHUT UP!" He bellows, immediately drawing the halberd and going at you. you block it and bash it back with the shield immediately, slicing him in the interim.

"I see Sunday's helicopter on the horizon! Just one more to be accounted for..." Angie says.

"I DON'T NEED SOME FUCKING REPLACEMENT COWARD THINKING HE'S BETTER THAN ME!" He says, whirling around and cutting your shield in half with his swing.

"Landed! One more..."

"I'M THE BEST! I WILL NEVER BE DE-THRONED, ESPECIALLY! NOT BY! SOME PUNK LIKE YOUUUUUUUU!" He says, cutting a limb off for each exclamation, leaving you only on the ground with your right arm weakly grasping your gladius.

Your pain receptors are off the charts, to the point where you couldn't take it after a loss of one limb, let alone the rest. The phantom pain still remains.

"I didn't need to...beat you..." You say, voice weary with exertion of controlling the UG.

"Thursday is here as well!" Angie calls out.

With your UG's final action, you move up and give the best shit-eating grin you can, flipping him off.

"I was a distraction, baby."

His eyes and nostrils flare, before he slams the halberd down on your head so hard, it brings the length of the blade into the floor.

You roll off the bed, injuries be damned, and meet out with Angie, all of the doctors walking with each other down to R&D.

"How long do they need?"

"Little time. We've had them collaborating via long-distance communication for a while. Two days maximum, it seems. And then...this nightmare will be over."

You nod solemnly.

The waiting game is one you hate to play, but because of pacing is a bitch and I'm starting Chapter 8 in like twelve seconds the way life goes, it has to be that way.

You walk over to Tell, Alexander, Leonidas and Joan, all simply sitting in a table talking quietly, until you walk in.

"Uh, hey, everyone."

"...Hello, Caesar." Tell quietly replies.

Already you feel more alien to the group than when you began.

"So, can we talk...?"

"Caesar..." Joan seems remiss to talk further. Tell puts his hand out to stop her. Alex himself seems the most pained.

Tell gets up, putting an arm around your shoulder, and walking with you to a secluded area.

"There's something you should know."

>[] "W-what?"
>[] Write-in.

"...I'm sorry we've been so cold to you. But we had a reason. I promise."

"W-What the hell are you talking about?"

"...Caesar, have you ever considered your life before you came here? Aside from your brother."

"...I...I had a mother, and a father...my...my brother..."

"You can't remember anything else, right? All there is is that clear memory of Iskandir killing your brother."

"Come out with it! What the fuck is going on!?"

"...After Iskandir left, we couldn't risk grabbing some greenhorn and forcing them to be a cyborg. We...we had to make them in-house. Dr. Paisley and I, we did something we're not proud of. We bought black market organs, put them in a semi-functioning robotic body, and we gave it memories so it could act like a person. We gave it lots of trivial information to seem like a personality. We..."

"No, shut the fuck up! You're...you're all just fucking with me!" You protest.

"Caesar, your blood is just a response we put in so that no one would know you--"

"I-I remember my brother! I can feel, and I can think--"

"It's not real. Caesar, I know it's hard, but you have to accept it."

"...Why now?" Funny, you're pretty sure you can't even form tears.

"...This might be our last mission. If we died to Iskandir, I couldn't die knowing I lied to you all your life."

You walk away to the locker rooms, intending to be alone, and stay alone.

Tell doesn't protest.

You sit calmly for about a minute, before you begin throwing lockers around with your superhuman strength.

No, not even human.

You scream aloud as you repeatedly punch one of the doors in so hard it goes concave. Your head swims with a million questions.

Was your passion for Alex real?

Is ANY of your rage at Iskandir justified, if these people MADE an entire person just to kill him?

What of the teammates who forced you into this world, only for you to be an expendable replacement!?

As you energy and strength wears down, you look at your palms.

Bloody, but you're still not a real man.

You hang your head in those same crimson palms as something does stream down your face.

Tears.

As if those are the mark of a true person.

You remain there, for two or so days, mind still running through philosophical ideals surrounding your lie of a life.

Somehow, you think the greatest battle won't be with Iskandir, but yourself.

END OF CHAPTER 7.

TO BE CONCLUDED IN CHAPTER 8.
