Become The Dragon Quest 10

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you got a letter when you woke up with the cryptic message “The Order of Fire lives”, which then promptly burst into flame. Classy. You got yourself some breakfast and then met up with Sir Meniver and Gimbly Durab, your instructors for the day. Sir Meniver instructed you on the various noble houses and how the political structure of the kingdom works, as well as letting you know that the current standing of your house is in jeopardy.

You had lunch with Sir Meniver, who you discussed the Order of Fire with. He told you about your father and uncle, where they came from and their rise through society, but before he could share his own theories about the Order of Fire Gimbly arrived to let you know it was time for your lessons on etiquette. You spent a few hours working with him before Millie, who was observing from outside the room, informed you that Gimbly was teaching you incorrectly.

Gimbly explained that he did it so that you'd make a fool of yourself at the party and that if that were to happen the only person who would be interested in you would be him. You chewed him out a bit and made him teach you properly, something you spent the rest of the afternoon and evening on.
>>
During dinner with your friends Gimbly interrupted when, while walking by to see if you were ready for your next lesson, he overheard that you were looking for the White Blade of Schimdi and the Red Rose of Loti. He sang the Ballad of Loti and Schimdi for you, outlining what the rose and blade really where and where they could be found in the hopes of earning your trust once more. You decided that he has until the ball to get his act together, and met him on the patio to finish up your lessons, which you aced.

Gimbly left to go back to the city and you summoned Cenere to go over his progress. As it turns out, your current holdings are the estate and about 5,000 gold pieces. Nice. And your uncle is skimming off the top super hard and has basically hidden almost 1,000,000 gold pieces worth of deeds and holdings from you that he gets to keep if you can't prove they're yours. Not nice. Now you know how much is at stake for him if the family name loses its weight at least.

You met up with Kat and Gil and told them about the situation, and they let you know they've got your back, and that Sena's treatment for whatever that potion did to her seems to be going well. You headed for bed, got comfy, and Sena came into the room more vamp'd up than when she took the potion. So much for her treatment going well.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

Sena walks towards you slowly, lips parted to reveal her fangs. She's panting softly, eyes unfocused and glowing red. She looks tired and desperate. Unfortunately, “desperate” likely means “desperate for your blood”. This isn't a good situation.

“Sena... You can hear me, right?”

Sena takes a stumbling step and nods, her breathing growing ragged. You think you can see her drooling slightly, but it could just be her fang reflecting the light. She nods slowly.

“I can... Kotijah, please...”

You move to sit at the edge of the bed, blanket wrapped around yourself.

“Sena, you need to control yourself. We can get you to Kat and see about getting you help.”

Sena lets out a soft whimper.

“But I need it now... If I don't, I... I don't know what's going to happen...”

She hugs herself tightly, advancing on you a little more quickly now. You've only got a few seconds to react.

You nod a bit and, right as Sena is about to reach for you, you throw the blanket over her. She lets out a surprised yell and flails about as you attempt to wrestle with her, trying to pin her or lift her successfully, but each time you get a solid grasp she breaks your hold. Sena is much stronger in this state, and you'll need a different approach to get her out of the room unless you can soundly overpower her.

When we used fire singing to start a fire to sear her wounds shut. Instead of following our will it auto-targeted her blight infected wound. Searing it and reducing the blight by the amount of fire we put out. If left us tired and drained too.

You release the blanket and step back, scratching your arm with your claws as Sena finally escapes it. It hurts, rather significantly, and your recent blood loss makes this an even worse idea, but maybe you can appease her. You let your arm hand, blood flowing down and coating your fingers. Sena stares at you, gasping when she notices the blood.

"K-Kotijah..."

She lunges for your arm and you pull away from her.

"Let's make a deal. You can have this, if you sit still and let me decide how much to give."

Sena whimpers a bit, but she nods. You move closer and hold your arm up, and Sena immediately moves under your fingers. She tries to latch on and you lift your arm slightly.

"Still."

She relents with a pout, standing there with her mouth open, catching the blood that drips from your fingers. You cover the wound with your hand, before grabbing a blanket to stop the flow as Sena's stop glowing. She wobbles a bit before snapping to her senses.

"Bleh! That tastes awful... why was my mouth full of...?"

She looks at you and turns red.

"W-Why are you naked?"

She gasps.

"And you're bleeding!"

She pulls at the blanket and chants, similar to the chant from the ritual at the church, and you feel your arm tingling. You slowly remove the blanket and find that the wound has closed completely. Sena seems a little out of breath, but she smiles at you.

"Th-There... better?"

Well, you still feel woozy from blood loss, but at least you're not leaking now.

You head for your dressing room while Sena averts her eyes.

"What do you remember?"

You slip on a robe and check yourself over again. It probably won't scar, but you should be careful with that wound. It's probably going to take some time to heal properly.

-

You have gained one Major wound

-

"I don't remember coming here... I was in my room with Millie, we went to bed, and then... I felt kinda thirsty and it all got hazy..."

You walk back out into your bedroom.

"Let's go and talk to Kat. There are some things you need to know about and some things I need to tell her."

Sena nods a bit and follows you out of the room. You head for Kat and Gil's room, pausing at the door to knock. Kat opens the door after a moment, smiling until she notices Sena's expression of apprehension.

"Oh boy... Um... Did something happen?"

You look her in the eye.

"You're turning into a vampire because of what you drank the other night. Kat gave you medicine to reverse it but it didn't work. We're going to help you. I'm going to make this right."

You pull her into a tight hug and Sena starts to shake, crying against your shoulder. You feel something sharp against your skin for a moment, and Sena gasps.

"S-Sorry!"

She tries to pull away but you keep her close.

"You didnt hurt me earlier and you won't hurt me now. I cut my arm to calm you down, you didn't do that to me. You're not a monster and you're not dangerous. You're my friend."

You give her a squeeze and slowly release her. Her eyes are still shiny with tears, but she doesn't look as afraid anymore.

You look over at Kat, who is smiling at you and Sena.

"So, think we can take care of this tonight?"

Kat nods.

"Anything is possible when we put our minds to it. It could take all night, but I've got a cream for that. I repurposed part of the basement as a lab. Meet me there?"

You give Kat a nod and gently pull Sena along with you back to your room. She fidgets along the way, eying you like she's worried she'll bite you any second. When you get to yoe room you snap your fingers, a maid appearing beside you.

"What do you require, madam?"

You tell the maid to help Kat at the lab and to send a few others down there too, and you leave Sena alone for a minute while you throw on a shirt and pants. You come back to find her sitting by the door, hugging her knees to her chest.

You kneel down next to her and gently touch her shoulder.

"I'm fine, honest. Come on, let's get you to the lab. Kat will make sure you're alright."

Sena looks at you for a moment, before looking at the floor.

"That's just it... I feel fine. Better than fine. I feel really good right now, strong, and... and powerful. I don't want that to go away. But I don't want to be a monster..."

You gently tussle her hair until it's a total mess.

"You'll never be a monster, Sena. I want to be a dragon, does that mean I'll be a monster?"

She shakes her head and smiles a little.

"Nope..."

You nod and smirk.

"So that doesn't mean you're a monster just because you have sharp teeth."

You help Sena to her feet and lead her down to the basement, the other girl clinging to your arm the whole way. She's still clearly scared, but at least she looks like she's taking some comfort from your presence.

You reach the lab to find Kat in her full mad scientist regalia. The room was probably storage at one point, and has since been repurposed for her needs. Hopefully she doesn't burn this one down. Maids scurry about this way and that, repositioning tables and barrels while Kat grinds something up in the corner.

"Alright girls, we've got two options. We can do this the quick and dirty way and see what happens, or we can work through the night and be a bit more precise with it. I vote quick and dirty."

Sena pouts.

You take a moment to weigh your options.

"I'm with Sena. We need to make sure that we're thorough about this."

Kat nods slightly.

"Understandable. Plus it'll give us time to understand her condition fully. Let's get to work!"

Most of your evening is spent working alongside Kat, scanning Sena with your vision and holding the girl's hand while Kat extracts blood and tissue samples. Honestly, you're pretty sure this is more stressful for her than the trip to the church after getting bitten. For the most part Sena just watches the pair of you work. After two hours Kat has recreated her original potion, and after another she has her cure recipe revised.

It's at this point that things start to go downhill.

The first accident occurs when Kat tries to purify a blood sample with her new cure recipe. The resulting reaction creates a steaming blood bubble, and it pops violently. You manage to avoid the scalding liquid and cover Sena, but Kat ends up coated from head to toe, running around shouting about her clothes being stained and how some got up her nose. After some toweling off and soothing lotion for Kat's burns you get back to work.

The second problem arises when, after the initial tests worked well, Kat's second attempt turns the tissue sample into a rotting, fanged monstrocity. It doesn't look like it'll stand up to much punishment, but with your wounds as bad as they are, neither can you.

Keep in mind, you've also got your first Major wound, which applies a -1 on your rolls.

-

Your attack connects, and the liquid and glass cover the beast, which shrieks and writhes, its skin bubbling and boiling away, until the whole thing collapses into a puddle of reddish goo. You spend the next several minutes holding Sena close while she has her panic attack and the maids tidy up, Kat taking notes the whole while "in case we can weaponize that stuff". The next attempt is a miserable failure, but after a few quick tests, Kat jots down a few notes and takes you aside.

"I know we're looking for a cure for Sena's vampirism, but... Well, in case there's nothing we can do for a permanent solution right, I think I can make something to dampen the effects, keep her human and stuff."

You could call it a night early and get some sleep now so you're not totally burnt out for your lessons, but you promised Sena that you'd fix the problem. Still, a temporary solution is better than what you've got right now.

“No. We finish this tonight.”

You walk back over to the table of supplies and pour over Kat's notes, looking for what's missing while Kat prepares the next batch of trials and lights her pipe. Then you notice something. All of the antidotes, cures and treatments that Kat has been using have been relying on the notion that the blight inside Sena is active and transforming her, but you've yet to see any black goo or rot on her. Your sight tells you that there's something in her stomach and her mouth in terms of magical auras, but there's nothing to indicate that the blight is even a factor at this point. And while Sena was out in the city someone told her she had an affinity for spirit magic, a branch of magic that is supposed to be the capstone of a mage's education or the staple of divine casters everywhere, necromancer or otherwise.

You start writing down your clues one by one, looking over the recipe for the first potion again. Sena had thrown it up but it had triggered something inside her, and the first attempt at a cure had only made things worse. No trace of the blight inside her. She radiates an aura that a teacher took as a sign that she would make a good divine caster. Her transformations only took hold at night, when the Church of the Sun and Moon said that their own magics turn from helpful to harmful.

The answer hits you like a ton of bricks, and you hastily jot down a formula. She was cured and stable, yes, but it wasn't that the blight was gone from her. Physically, yes, but some of the magic lingered, and the divine healing magic from the church was in perfect balance with it. Then Kat's potion threw the balance off. You could make a potion to completely purge both magics from her to return her to normal, or...
>>
You could try to mix something up to restore the balance again, letting her keep her budding potential for divine magic. If things went out of balance again she'd need another potion, but right now Sena could probably learn to channel those energies into healing spells or harmful blasts as her body adjusts and adapts to them.

You finish the outline of your formula with all the basic principles outlined and take it over to Kat.

“I think this should do the trick, though I don't know how to translate this into an actual potion.”

Kat takes one look at it and hits herself in the head.

“Of course! How could I have not seen that!”

She grins at you.

“It's nice having someone around who understands and respects my genius for what it is, but who can also help me figure out stuff like this. Let's do it! I think it should work perfectly, I've got everything I need to whip this up.”

You shake your head.

“Sena gets a say in this too. I'll ask her first.”

Sena is sitting in the corner reading through her book on magic, turning the pages idly.

“Sena? I've got a question for you.”

Sena perks up and looks over at you, smiling softly.

“What's up...?”

You pull a chair over and sit down on it.

“We've got two options. One is to purge you of it completely, but if we do that then you'll lose your gift with spirit magic. The other is to balance the two forces inside you, and you'll keep your magic but you'll have to be careful to stay balanced or else we'll have to do this again. Got it?”

Sena nods slowly and looks at the book.

“...No matter what I'm not a monster, right...? Even if... Even if things go wrong, you won't... drive me away or something...?”

You shake your head and smile.

“Of course not.”

Sena smiles cheerfully.

“Then... Then I'll do it. I want to be useful to you, even if there's a risk... And you can always set things right again after...”

You nod and work with Kat to mix up the potion, offering the bottle of steaming liquid to Sena. She drinks it slowly before coughing a little bit and grimacing.

“It tastes awful... But... I feel fine now, I think...”
>>
A quick inspection with your sight reveals that the dark aura is gone, and all seems normal once again. You let out a yawn and realize just how tired you are. Time to try to get some sleep, you suppose.

Order the maids for two things, getting us up, and making sure there will be some 10x extra strong coffee ready for us for tomorrow. Ask Kat to whip up a healing potion as soon as she recovers.

You head for the stairs with a small smile on your lips.

“I'm gonna go take a nice nap, I think... Kat, wake me when there's healing potion to be had, would you...?”

Kat nods and tosses a bottle to you with three pills in it.

“This should get you through the day tomorrow. Take one pill with breakfast and another at lunch and you'll be awake til dinner time. One more at dinner and you'll be fine til bedtime. Just... Be careful. There are some side-effects, but it varies from person to person.”

You nod and pocket the bottle, heading off to your room to rest. You make it to your bed, flop onto it, and let yourself pass out.

-

Gonna stop here for now. More to come tomorrow. Until next time!
