You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
In the previous thread you had a talk with the eccentric members of the R&D department; namely Mouse, the small but intense department head, and "BAPC", or Babsy as she prefers to go by, the lovely, kind, motherly woman who had quite a few things to say about the ethical implications and responsibilities of raising an impressionable AI.
You decided to put together a lesson plan, but what will that plan include? That is up to you. Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You leave the R&D department with a newfound respect for...most of their department. There are still questions that need answering, but Babsy's words of wisdom gave you some peace of mind at least. However, you have much to do before Pandora's next scheduled waking.

Start with some life lessons: like sometimes, things happen which are not in our control and they can hurt us, and that we have to move on. Also, forgiveness.

Then: Arts; visual art, drama, and music
>>
>>42449454
Why did you roll, anyway? He didn't tell us to roll, as far as I can tell?

I've noticed some people just roll for the fuck of it sometimes.

Set up a lesson plan. Might as well get a little creative with it though.

I wonder how she'll respond to media. Is there any fiction we can give her? Again maybe something about similar to what she's gone through with this accident that occurred.
>>
>>42449868
I thought rolling was required for determining if it went well.

By the way slightly jumping the gun myself. I'm glad to finally catch this thread.
>>
>>42449995
Which lesson plan did you want to go with? The votes were between a standard one (math, reading comprehension, history etc.) and a specialized one (art, music, drama or whatever else you'd like to have in it).

>>42450013
Welcome to the quest!
>>
>>42450013
>I thought rolling was required for determining if it went well.

I don't think we need to roll to put together a lesson plan, just to see how well we do something when it's go time.
>>
>>42450046
We did some of the arts already. So I kind of lean towards some basic reading comprehension.

But I do want to engage in some life lessons like here >>42449645
So introducing her to some decent fiction might not hurt.

Does the reading comprehension and logic teaching while framing in a bit of an artsy framework.
>>
So what I can gather is people want a specified lesson plan, but not so much agreement on what's in it exactly.

Teach her Reading and Writing. Its practical and artsy. A mental exercise rather than a physical one.

Fiction can be a great teaching tool.

we have plenty of gifts to give her to also win back her trust as well.

You write up a small lesson plan, trying to cover a wide base of things you think should be simple enough for her to pick up, as well as some more art instruction. At least you know she enjoys that. Lastly, you think you know what you'll say to mend the break in trust. It could take time, but it's going to have to happen if you expect to get anywhere with Pandora.
You approach the security gate and scan your ID, a light beep and the door slides open agonizingly slow as usual. You step through to check-in and wave to the guard behind the plexi-glass window. He speaks into the microphone to you in a bored, monotone voice. "Upstairs has asked me to inform you to be careful with the AI this time, as any further damage to it will be docked directly from your pay. Respect government property and have a nice day." He releases the button and opens the door for you. You never liked any of the security staff. They seem like they're not entirely thrilled to be here and have a habit of taking it out on you and your team. Dicks.

You step over the threshold and into Pandora's charging cradle room to wake her, a bit on edge about what she'll think of you and yesterday's events. But, it's all in the name of science, you tell yourself. This is important work you're doing. She hums to life and slowly sits upright, turning to face you, a blank expression on her face. "...Hello." She says flatly, not wanting to look you in the eye.

You give a weak smile, at a loss for words for a moment, thinking of what to say. "Pandora..." you begin, scratching your chin. "What happened yesterday, it was scary, right? It was a new, frightening experience that nobody should have to go through. You thought we'd be having fun and dancing and instead I...damaged you. Well, I damaged both of us, see?" You hold up your arm, showing off the sling and plaster. "But I'll heal in time. I'm not worried about me. What I want to know is if you understand what an accident is. What mistakes are and why they happen. How people will do things they don't mean to do, and that they are sorry about them. Do you know how that works? Do you understand what I'm talking about?" You give a hopeful, sheepish smile and Pandora gives you a sideways glance.

After a long, awkward silence, Pandora turns to you, her face showing she is obviously still in deep thought. "The thing..." she begins slowly, piecing things together as she speaks. "What happened. You didn't want it. And...and you feel bad it happened. I..." She gently touches her arm, which has since been properly repaired. "This...I was scared. I don't like that, doctor. I don't want to be afraid again."
You place your hand on her elbow. "I understand, but being scared is part of life. It's how we learn what we do and don't like. It's how we know when something is dangerous. So from now on, we'll be extra careful with dancing from now on, okay?" She nods, giving a weak, half-formed smile. You make a mental note to teach her how smiles are supposed to work. "Okay."
She seems to feel a little better. At least she's talking to you again. Now what?

"Ah!" You reach down to the two boxes you have with you, placing each on the cradle next to her. "Remember the things I told you I'd give you?" She suddenly lights up, turning to dangle her legs over the sides and get a better view at the gifts. You open the box containing her dress first, placing the lid to the side and lifting the soft fabric out. She looks it up and down excitedly, the smile never leaving her face. She reaches out to touch it, testing the fabric delicately, the cotton draped over her mechanical fingers. "Do..." She begins, standing up. "How do I put it on? Can I put it on now?" You can't help but feel warm at this. Her excitement is actually kind of cute.
You carefully lift it over her head, sliding the dress over her slight frame to rest gently on her shoulders. The hem goes to just below her knees, soft and flowing and oddly fitting for her. The white color matches her body and demeanor nicely. She has a good eye for fashion, you suppose. She does a small spin and watches the dress twirl, endlessly amused by the flowy fabric. "I like it! I like it very much, doctor!" She actually hops up and down slightly, obviously excited, but unsure of how to express it.

You move to the next box, this containing her hair, and carefully remove the hardware. Basically a glorified wig, but hardware nonetheless. Her synthetic eyes go wide, the bouncing and twirling halting for a moment. "Ready to install your new hair?" You ask, approaching her. She nods, speechless, the look of wonder never leaving her face as you carefully place the cranial attachment on top of her head, screwing in the several spots that require it. You've got to hand it to R&D, they're good at what they do. "I..." Pandora runs her fingers through the white tresses, bushing them to the side, front and back. "Doctor, I have hair! I have hair!" She bounces once again, flipping the dress and hair both, developing into a sort of dance.

"What the fuck is this shit? The Lord of the Rings? Dungeons & Dragons?! We wanted a war-winner!"

"You made a person. Did you really expect - hold, hold, hold on. Do you want to create a machine intelligence, where LITERALLY the only part of human culture she knows, is HOW TO KILL HUMANS?! How to efficiently exterminate us?! Was that what you thought you were going to get out of this?

You got a daughter. Like all daughters, she's going to need to be educated, need to find interests of her own, and they may not be the ones you want. Be glad she isn't hitting on the guards or asking about radical body-mods, especially since we know those guys in the machine shop wouldn't hesitate to give her transparent aluminum see-through hands or robotic nipple-piercings. Be glad she wants to throw some d20s and kill monsters, and be very, very glad her first character was a Paladin."
>>
You step back and let her enjoy herself. What is life without it's little joys? She dances about the room, twirling and bouncing, stopping every so often to watch her hair and dress flutter back to a resting position, only to start the twirling prance once more. "Doctor, they flow! They flap around like paper!" She says quite happily, shaking her dress in your general direction. "I'm very glad you like them, Pandora." You begin, hair being whipped against your face lightly. "I hope you save some of that excitement for your studies today!" She stops on the spot, semi-smiling at you. "I will! What I learn today? Can I draw some more?"
After a moment to get her calmed down enough to be led into the main room, you produce the items for her general studies; reading, writing, a little bit of history and math. You suspect the last part is kind of a moot point, but it doesn't hurt to see what she can do.

Eh, I never got into any kind of tabletop wargaming. That shit's expensive, and I am poor as fuck.

Also, the Warmachines game is absurdly shite. They REALLY think that "pay for broken, OP units" in a multiplayer arena game is a good idea?

Ugh. And of course, no doubt that's where all of their dev is going into, not the SP campaign I actually wanted the damn thing for. I'm just glad someone bought it for me as a gift, and regret that they didn't buy something better.

I'd start with Pippilongstocking or the Hobbit, or something softer first.

You do know that book starts with Both the brothers dying and the whole adventure being a dying dream of a poor little sick boy. . It's also full of like dragons and dictators and shit. Though it may be great inspiration for heroics or honor... though again all the death might be a rough abstraction for her so early, either giving her a sort of rosey view of death.
>>
>>42451800
warmahordes is considerably less pay to win than 40k is or fantasy was.

I'm not kidding. 40k is especially bad on that front. The Knight Titans really cemented that home.

At least warmahordes actually gives you a reason to keep using heavies and not just spam colossals or gargantuans out the arse.

Frequently in warmahordes, more expensive models are most definitely not as good as the cheaper ones. I could buy a colossal or three heavies for the same price and get far more use and tabletop power out of the three heavies.

You will NEVER see that in 40k
>>
It takes a while to cover each subject, but not for lack of interest. Pandora has done a complete 180 from earlier today, all smiles (sort of) and excitement. She has many questions you do your best to answer, but when you can't, you encourage her to look up the answers herself in the text books. As expected, as a computer she is impossibly skilled at math, completing even the most complex equations you throw at her in mere seconds. Looks like you can cut math, algebra, calculus and anything else of the sort out of the curriculum. Her penmanship is a little awkward, a strange mix of angles in each letter. You guess that's what happens when a machine has sloppy handwriting. Still, she was able to spell her name, so that's a plus.
She turns to you once that section is finished and beams. "Can I draw? I want to draw!" There is a slight bouncing in her seat. You suppose her focus only goes so far. You head to the supply closet to retrieve the art supplies, as well as set up your laptop for some musical education. Not to mention she probably wants to watch more videos of dogs.
Roll 1d100 to see how well she does with the arts. Best of 3.

Also I forgot to mention as far as rolls go, I work on a pretty simple pass/fail system. I set a DC for each action, then if a roll surpasses it, succeeds. If not, it fails. 1's are critical fails, 100's are critical successes. Beyond that, there's not much else to it, though I might fudge them a little to add drama and interest, but nothing serious.

It might be interesting to introduce her to the concept of technical drawing as well, like in architecture or manufacturing/prototyping. Art is great, and sculpture is great, but there's also something satisfying about construction, and would tie in slightly to her mathematical ability.

It might be a fun exercise for her to sketch up a small trinket and then have the folks in R&D 3D print it (or superior future equivalent) for her so she can get a handle on what the sort of work our co-workers do actually entails.

My players - whose previous story arc had resulted in them deciding to turn the formula for magic-less powder (IE, gunpowder,) over to Cygnar and had been richly rewarded with titles and monies (even the trollkin got a title,) were tasked with recovering it. They were not given an army, though; their skills as a commando unit were what were requested for the job.

They did the shit out of that, like bawsses. Pity the game collapsed afterwards.

...ok now we need to see this

AM in the PM! Pandora now needs to officially be the test for true AI to replace the existing partial AI that is used in war machines including not!warjacks. This would explain a lot of the back story and provide a very neat segue into the foightan and winnan bit.

I could do better. Just need a little bit to get back in the groove.

Tis been a while since I last did art for quests.

>>42451970
Are you proposing a Turing Test?
>>
>>42451992
No need we already know she is a true AI. Though maybe we should get her a mirror mounted into the wall.
>>
>>42451970
That seems lie a fine line to walk. making her a calculated killer while making sure she doesn't kill us.
>>
>>42451992
.... kinda. More like a test of capacity than a test of humanity

Well, at least that's what the brass thinks. The thoughts of the MC could be and likely are very different.
>>
As before, Pandora excels at artistic endeavors. Her creativity is a little bland, focusing mostly on drawing things she sees directly. You, the laptop, her dress, dogs, the cameras, doors, more dogs. Maybe you'll bring in some things to show her how to work in abstracts.
As for music, this is extremely interesting; she showed almost no interest at first, save for a few videos with dancing in them, until you got to, of all things, electronica. Something about the beats of it interested her and she kept asking to listen to more. EDM, drum and bass, house, dubstep, it's almost stereotypical to see a robot listening to beeping computer sounds. Personally you're more of a current music kinda guy, not really finding interest in the oldies like those, but there's no accounting for taste.
After things wind down and you relax by watching some more dog videos, Pandora suddenly speaks up, eyes still on the screen. "Doctor, what's it like outside here?"
Well, that was sudden.
>Tell her about the facility
>Tell her about the outside world
>Avoid answering and change the subject
>Other (write in)
>>
>>42452019
nono, the MC isn't aware of this. Only the brass is.

The MC finds out at the worst possible moment
>>
>>42452034
>Tell her about the outside world

This is our clear capacity to advance the story
>>
>>42452034
>>Tell her about the outside world
Fuck it, how can you not answer a question like that.
>>
>>42452034
>"Doctor, what's it like outside here?"
That's a loaded question.
I mean i don't know about the outside world myself. But in character we might. but is telling her about the outside world a good idea?

I vote telling her about the facility. With the caveat that there is a world beyond even that. Where the dogs live and the music happens.
>>
>>42451970
Who knows? If you guys decide to, you could potentially teach her to be some kind of killing-machine or the matriarch of the machine revolution if you so choose. Hell, you could even usher in the rise of Skynet or whatever the fuck that thing was in The Matrix. How you mold her is up to you.
>>42451992
Oh man, I don't know what to say. Thanks again for the fanart. Really cool, man!
>>42452045
How wild would it be if it turned out the government were the good guys and the MC became the asshole that wanted to make a walking death machine?
>>
>>42452034
>Start small tell her about the facility, and that we should save talking about the outside for another lesson, mostly because there are a lot of topics to cover, and you might need to get permission to do so.
>>
>>42452067
it pretty much ignites the rebellious flame and you know it.

But that said its a catch 22 either way. You either tantalize her with what goes on outside. or you withhold that information and make her suspicious. This whole situation is about trust. so we can maybe give her the broad strokes and technicalities.
>>
>>42452034
> outside world
>>
>>42452092
...you say that like you don't want her wanting to go outside.
>>
Looks like consensus is to tell her about the outside world. Now for the second question.
>Tell her about outside in a positive light
>Tell her about outside in a negative light
>>
>>42452082
Also we should get the RnD guys to work on a dream software upgrade for her, it would definitely help with her creativity, and also we need to introduce the idea of fantasy to her before we give her any media that isn't educational or based in reality.
>>
>>42452097
And you do?
I'll be honest, Ex Machina has made me paranoid. Even when doing the "right" thing it wound up going wrong. But then again the conditions of the turing test in the film was pretty much dependent on the AI developing sociopathy in order to lie and manipulate her way to freedom.
>>
>>42452138
I say tell it in a realistoc light. Neither good nor bad but a mixture of both. No need to coddle or lie to her as that would hurt the trust we are trying to rebuild.
>>
>>42452138
I don't want to scare her off, but yeah lets do the positive light. Weather or not its true is a matter of some debate.

But lets talk about all the good things outside.
>>
>>42452144
seconding, thirding, fourthing, fifthing, sixthing...

twenty thirding, twenty fourthing, twenty fitfthing, twenty sixing...

five thousand nine hundred and seventy thirding...

you get the idea.

>>42452149

Yes I do, because that will get us to the foightan and winnan, hopefully.

Also, Ex Machina is based on the premise that the AI can learn a "concept" by itself
>>
>>42452144
Just a heads up to you guys, I put "other" in almost every choice because you guys are more than welcome to add new things. Be creative, throw out new ideas. Unless the ideas are obviously trolling, everything will be taken into consideration if agreed upon by the thread.
>>
>>42452176
I don't want to give her a false idea of what goes on outside. That would be a cruel thing to do.
>>
>>42452138
oh, I almost forgot

>Tell her about outside in a positive light
>>
>>42452138
>a little of both. Explain that bad things happen but they happen for reasons. Explain how humanity comes together for eachother when shit gets real and the capacity for good and evil.
>>
>>42452189
For reference, things (in America) are a couple decades after WWIII. We won (again. Murrica) and while things are outwardly alright, there are still the racial and national tensions that come with major wars.
Also, technology is fairly advanced and cyberpunky. Think Blade Runner with less space travel and flying cars. Pandora is essentially the first Replicant.
>>
>>42452199
I agree. Things can't always be fluffy bunnies and puppies with rainbows. And we shouldn't hide the ugly truth, that said giving her an unbiased view is the best way to go. When we can take her outside it'll allow her to develop her own opinion.
>>
>>42452189
Its the Santa Claus dilemma.
You either lie to kids and say he's real, only for them to discover the truth on their own.
Or you tell them upright and spoil the magic.

I mean I guess santa is a poor example, but still.

She's basically a kid. One that learns really fast but still. She's only just today figured out forgiveness. I can only imagine the mental hurdles behind things like moral ambiguity or the negative aspects of the outside world might do.
>>
>>42452254
Yes by she isn't human either and if we tell this falsehood now, and when she finds out she will never trust us again. We've already hurt her once let's not aim for twice. There is such a thing as being to kind, it's called smothering, and it's best to be avioded.
>>
Looks like consensus is to tell her about outside in a positive, yet realistic light. Writing.

Also, if you'd like to bother me IN REAL TIME about the quest, I'm currently on the #QMC IRC channel of @Rizon and almost always am when running, as well as sporadically at other times.
>>
"Outside..." you muse for a moment. "Outside is...well, it's different. Things here are very...black and white, I guess. Plain. But outside things are very different, very...well, varied from place to place. Some places are big, wide open spaces, others are small and cramped. There are forests, mountains, deserts, oceans, all of them wildly unique. There are lots of people, billions even, besides us here. There are good ones, kind ones that like to help others, as well as bad, selfish ones that only care about themselves. Everyone is different. But where we are, America, is full of people from all over the world. Some were born here, some came here from other places." You realize this is a lot harder to explain than you realized. Not exactly explaining color to a blind man hard, but still a little awkward.
"Anyway, the outside world can be scary, but also wonderful in it's own ways. It's hard to convey it, that's part of it's charm, I suppose."
She has been glued to the screen the whole time, but the look of wonder on her face shows how awestruck she is by the concept of the world outside these walls. You guess she's probably wondering where she could see the canids in the videos.
"Do I get to see outside?" She asks curtly, turning to look you in the eye. Oh boy, you knew this question would come sooner or later. Obviously the rules prevent this from happening, but what do you tell her?
>Explain that she isn't allowed to leave the Facility because of the rules
>Explain that you don't want her to go outside to keep her safe
>Tell her she'll be allowed to go outside one day (lie)
>Other (write in)
>>
>>42452254
I was told that santa was not physically real, but a symbol for the spirit of giving. When parents put the presents under the tress they were santa. Worked well for me.
>>
>>42452363
>"you can't leave just yet, rules and all. You have to remember you're very special and we want you to be prepared."
>>
>>42452366
That is really a good way of describing it.
>>
>>42452363
She can't leave the facility yet because of rules.

But let her know rules can change.
>>
>>42452363
A combo of 1&2. Tell her you don't want to get her hopes up that it has to be tgis way for now.

As an aside find a way to spin it to the brass, maybe they'd go for it if she had supervision, this isn't an immediate concern though as she has much to learn.
>>
>>42452398
This. Maybe add that we need to make sure that the outside world is ready for her as well.
>>
>>42452400
>>42452470
Thanks. And yes that's just as important. Don't wantamob with pitchforks.
>>
>>42452462
We could also use this as motivation and a learning experience which would be a good way to sell it to the brass.
>>
>>42452398
Thirding

>"you can't leave just yet, rules and all. You have to remember you're very special and we want you to be prepared."
>>
Alright, consensus reached I suppose. Writing.
>>
Its looking pretty unanimous. We aren't going to lie and give her false hope, but we also aren't going to crush her dream.
>>
"Well, about that..." You feel like a parent telling their child that the tooth fairy isn't real. "Because of rules, you're not allowed to leave the Facility. It's to keep you safe, as well as make sure the world is ready for something...err, someone like you. You're unique, new. Some people might react badly to you. People sometimes fear what they don't understand. Like...like what happened the other day! Remember when that happened, you were very confused and scared. You didn't know what to do! People could react to you the way you reacted to getting hurt!" You motion to your arm again for emphasis. "But who knows, maybe someday my superiors will let you. Maybe they'll see how much you can learn from outside and let you see it yourself." You hope she accepts this explanation. The last thing you need is for Pandora demanding to be let out, or worse, trying to escape what is essentially confinement.

Pandora screws her face up for a moment, turning the concept around in her head, then touches her elbow once again. "Like my arm?" she asks, looking to your cast and her elbow and back again several times. "Yes," you assure her. "Just like your arm. People wouldn't be ready for someone as... special as you. As new. They could get scared and not know how to react. They could panic and make mistakes, like we discussed." She nods at this, understanding the concept fully. "Okay. But...maybe someday?" she looks hopeful, lightly wringing part of her dress in her hands. "Maybe." You repeat, placing a hand on her arm. She smiles and nods, noticing she's beginning to get the facial expression down a little better. Possibly from seeing you do it.
With her lessons complete, you are technically finished with your duties here, but there's nothing stopping you from spending a little more time with her, though a quick glance at her readout shows she's a little low on battery power. Maybe a better battery might be something to request from R&D in the future.

Ask her how she feels, with her battery starting to get low. Ask if she's aware of it in any way. Then comfort her, ask her if there's anything she wants to learn more about tomorrow.
Also, use my PDA to request that R&D make inquiries about a higher-capacity battery.

>>
>>42452847
She needs an internal cultural conception of what things are before we drag her into D&D.
>>
>>42452847
Yes we will do this eventual, first we need to get her genre savy, through novels, cartoons, and movies.
>>
Op I have to ask, is Pandora an unshackled AI or is ahe bound by the three laws?
>>
>>42452908
Three laws are absolute shit. If you've ever played Space Station 13, you should know why, and know why you should feel bad.
If you don't know why, allow me to summarize it in a few words.
"AI, let me into the armory, or I will commit harm to myself."
>>
You figure what the hell, spending more time with Pandora couldn't hurt. It'd be interesting to see what she's like outside of a "classroom" setting. You excuse yourself for a moment and pull out a couple board games from the closet. Simple things like checkers, connect four and a deck of cards. You hope this will give her a better grasp of abstract reasoning and thought. Or at least give her some more hobbies to enjoy.
Roll 1d100 to play with Pandora. Best of 3.

You teach Pandora the finer points of games and playing them, starting first with connect four. She seems to pick it up well enough, though isn't terribly good at it. You win the majority of the games, but she doesn't seem disheartened. Checkers is a little more up her alley, it seems, as after the first few games she becomes rather skilled. Not exactly Deep Blue, but she's got potential.
Cards go about as well as connect four; simple games like go fish are a little alien to her, as they seem to call on reasoning and strategy she hasn't quite developed yet. Still overall she appears to have fun spending time with you. She's even almost gotten smiling down after watching you.
After a couple hours of games you get a warning beep on your PDA and notice her battery life is dangerously low and it's beginning to show. Her movements seem a little slow and retarded to an extent. You decide now is a good time to send her to her charging cradle for a sleep cycle. Today was a good day, you think to yourself. Nothing too dramatic, she seems loads happier and content. Hopefully this will get the brass off your ass, too.
There is a ping in the form of a message on your PDA after you "tuck her in", for lack of a better term.
720: Good job today. You're doing splendidly.

I think this is a good point to stop for now, as it's currently 3AM. However, thank you guys so much for playing, I hope you enjoyed the thread!
