You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. After traveling coast to coast and then back to Las Vegas on the ultimate road trip with your friends, you have established yourself as a pretty badass landmaster.

Now it’s time to put a bandaid on your bank account, send your family a post card that’ll arrive after you do, and head home.

---

Ro is threatening you with real threats if you don’t abandon your bed and face your headache head on.

“I’m not leaving willingly,” you say, your words muffled by your face being in the pillow.

“Take me seriously or else,” she warns.

You’re not in the mood for an ‘or else’. “Ugh. Fine,” you complain, rolling onto your back with all your strength. You feel huge and slow, your many limbs tangled in the sheets. This must be how spiders feel when they get tangled up in their own webs. You give up. “I’m stuck.”
“C’mon. Don’t make me sound like Mom,” she says.

Reluctantly, you extricate yourself from all the blankets you piled on the bed. Light cuts against your eyes, despite you keeping them forced shut. You groan and continue the process of freeing yourself, careful not to rip anything too much. They’ll charge for that.

You feel a note of accomplishment from Ro. “Let’s go,” she says, heading around the corner and into the hall.

Groggily, you try to stuff your clawed feet into your Jordans. It doesn’t work. You grumble as you flex your legs and make your feet turn back regular. Or back human, you guess. Whatever. You shove your shoes on and go about glamoring up to hide everything about yourself except your attitude.
>>
>>42466050

Zombie-like, you yank on your best jacket, don your dad’s supervillain hat, and shuffle out after Ro in your PJs.

The tiny Hispanic cleaning lady in the hallway gives you a look of mixed worry and disapproval. Maybe something about you looking like you’re some punk with terminal leukemia who just blew their make a wish on Vegas and now you’re heading home to die. The hat might factor in too.

You almost fall asleep in the elevator ride down, but the ding on ground floor one gets you to open your eyes again. Rowan leads you out to the car, which is indeed packed and ready to go.

Ro skips past and jumps in. Vik and Reeber are hanging out in the back, Vikrama nose-deep in some novel.

“You look repulsive,” Moriah says flatly. She’s wearing a neat outfit with a big floppy black hat that’s probably fashionable.

“Yes. Repulsive,” Xan says, snickering half-heaterdly at you. Her hair is a mess, her clothes are rumpled like she slept in them. Even through the haze hanging over your senses, you can feel her fatigue.

“No, you’re repulsive! All of you!” you shout, cleverly turning the mind games back on their creators.

Moriah gives you a blank look, then opens the driver’s side door of the SUV and gets in.

“Shotgun,” Ro says, skipping past you. She executes a superfluous, but technically impressive slide across the hood of the car to get to her door.

You flop down somewhere in the middle with Xan and drive off.

You spread out to obtain maximum sleeping comfort, which isn’t very much in the SUV, while Xan takes the opposite route, curling up into a ball like some kind of cat.

You heave a sigh and try to get on going back to sleep. “Did we win big?” you ask.

“We won four thousand dollars,” Xan says weakly.

You have the foggiest recollection of wheels and cards, and maybe of Xanissil trying to bite you. “S’good.”

Xan closes her eyes and settles in for the long haul. “Also, we lost ten thousand dollars.”

Man. That money was supposed to be your new apartment or a car or something. “Should’ve cheated,” you say.

“They have people looking for that,” says Ro.

Moriah looks back at you in the mirror. “They paid for any cheating they might have tried last night.”

People keep talking, but you stop listening. Man. Ten thousand dollars. That’s like what Frederick paid you to help him in his secret mission. But you did get four thousand back, so it’s only like you lost six. Maybe if you chock it up to making memories it’ll feel like an investment. Yeah. That sounds right.

You’re out.

--

As fun as it was blowing off the Hallows and running into the big wide world of sports, it’s actually even cooler coming back. Like. People actually missed you and stuff. And Cassandra won’t stop asking you questions about the magic cops in New York. She’s worried they might be able to figure out who you are, but Rowan’s sure they have nothing. You didn’t give them anything either, so that’s fine.

Isaac’s not around, sadly. Something about rounding up a posse and Porthcawl. Harvey says his dad even be considering asking Ranthix along. The more the merrier, you think.

And about Harvey.

You give Harvey a hard look and lean on the kitchen counter, still in your PJs and Nazi hat, but significantly less sleepy. “So?”

He waves his hands around mystically.

“Cut that out,” you say. But somehow out of his mystical hand waving, he produces two tickets. You can barely read the text printed on them. “Phantom...”

“Of the Opera,” he finishes. “The internet gave me tickets.”

For the record, the degree of traditionalness is how hard it wrecks shirts. Ro getting her wing exploded the back of her shirt and Sierra getting wings wrecked her shirt too.
But we can't tell Harvey that. It's up to him to figure out what "tradition" means in this context.

Hey yo guys we currently have 4 wells being absorbed/shaped/cooked or whatever it is wells do.

What do you think about trying to shape what we get out of them? I'd love to try and smash all the power from the four of them into one mega summon. A date to the theater. Like. The fancy theater with real people. That’s not too shabby. Girls love that kind of crap.

It sounds almost too good though. You eye him suspiciously. “So... is this like, a plan you have, or did you already do something?” you ask. “And I mean with words. Like, yo bae, and with her being like, sure man I’d go on a date with you just like you asked me to.”

“Words were spoken,” says Harvey, utilizing his passive voice speaking skills to not answer your question at all.

“If she doesn’t know it’s a date, it’s not helping you any,” you say. “She’s just hardcore friend zoning you even more than she has.”

Harvey gets defensive. “I asked if she wanted to go with me as a date. She said okay,” he says.

“What exactly did she say?” you probe, narrowing your eyes.

“Okay,” Harvey says with a shrug.

“Neither you nor your impression of Sydney seem very excited about this,” you say.

“I’m saving excitement for the date,” he replies guardedly. “Tomorrow night.”

Well. He asked and she didn’t say no. So.

You stare at Harvey a moment longer before passing final judgment. “All right. You made a plan, you talked to the girl. I mean. The real hurdle’s getting to second base, but it’s a start.” You put on your best Emperor impression. “Well done, my apprentice. Everything is proceeding according to my design.”

Harvey smiles, proud to be the target of your praise.

“Now,” you say grandly, “eat wings!” You lash out and slap him on the shoulder.

There’s an explosion of light. And also Harvey’s shirt, as per tradition. Unfortunately it’s just a plain white one, but Harvey’s got a lot of those, so chances weren’t good you’d get one of his favorite ones anyway.

Harvey flinches backward, his pure white wings sweeping half the countertop onto the floor, halo gleaming in the light. Lots of stuff breaks, and he actually looks completely surprised for once in his life. “Holy Moses!”
>>
>>42467575

You cover your mouth at all the broken stuff on the floor. “It’s your fault!” you say quickly, ducking out of the kitchen and retreating up the stairs to your room.

You hear shouts of astonishment from downstairs. Rowan’s there. Cassandra’s there. You can pretty much hear every word.

You lie back in bed. Man. What a way to spend a couple weeks. Weird to be back in the real world, even if it’s the surreal world where you got accepted to college and also have wings. There’s a lot of stuff you could do. Like maybe start thinking about moving out, for example. Although you’ll probably want some more money if you’re to enact one of your grander schemes.

Maybe money can wait though. You just got back. Gotta chill out a little. After that though, you’ll probably want to get out and do something.

You’ll look around for jobs later. Maybe Wolf’s dad needs you to steal from goblins again. Or maybe Frederick needs a second for another fantastic journey. You’re eighteen, you’re adult, you can do whatever the hell you want.

Tonight though, you want to see Wolf. You kind of got used to popping in whenever you felt like it, even if he was pretty busy. But you haven’t seen anything more of him than Facebook uploads since you left.

Although duty calls first. As a future crowned badass, you have to make sure you’re not an idiot.

After cleaning up from a whole day in the car, you sneak out onto the roof outside your window and call your most trusted advisor, Ranthix the Terrible.

It doesn’t even ring. “YES I KNOW YOU ARE RETURNED,” Ranthix shouts, loud enough that the phone doesn’t even pick all of it up. “I WILL SPEAK TO YOU SOON OF INTRIGUES AND TREACHERY OF MAGNITUDES IN SUCH EXCESS THAT BLOOD BOILS AND DEATH IS LOOSED TO SEEK HIS OWN,” he tells you. “MY TONGUE IS STAYED BY CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES. GIVE NO OUTWARD APPEARANCE OF CIRCUMSPECTION. I WILL CALL UPON YOU AS SOON AS I AM ABLE.” He finishes, though you can still hear him breathing heavily on his end.

You don’t know what’s going on, but you know what Ranthix wants you to do, at least. “Uh. Okay. I mean like, I got it,” you say.

“GOOD, SPAWNLING. REMEMBER: DO NOT APPEAR AGGREIVED OR INFURIATED.”

“I’ll do that. And you do whatever you gotta do, big guy.”

“YES I WILL,” he says. He hangs up on you.

“Weird,” you say, looking at your phone. You have kind of a foreboding feeling about all that, but there’s nothing you can do about it. You technically could call Waldric or Orias or somebody, but you figure you should wait on Ranthix.

Anyway. You did your duty. So it looks like you can have a return-date with Wolfgang and stuff.

But questions remain.

>Bone Carapace: The flesh of Sierra's extremities can distort into ridged, black, chitin-like bone at will. This armored carapace provides protection from physical harm, and in no way impedes movement. In addition, the spines protruding from her joints can cut or stab opponents during grappling. Armor: (~4 slashing, piercing, ballistic), ~6 (Fire), ~2 (Blunt). Stress Sensitive. [Mix]
Woah. I just noticed this. Sierra's freaky armor skin is actually tougher than that enchanted chainnmail, at least when the special isn't activated.

You spruce yourself up a bit, wear some good running shoes, and yell at everybody you’re headed out. Cass and Ro are still all chatty Cathys with Harvey about his wings and whatever, so they’re good to go you guess.

You will find Wolfgang, and then you will terrorize him. And you will do it secretly with all your many ninja detective skills. You don’t have any of his blood, but you have your wits and also you know where he works.

Also if that doesn’t work you can call Maviel and have her figure it out for you. Anyway.

Time to get dangerous. You grab your motorcycle and ride out, free of the confines of the wonderful and horrible SUV.

The sun’s already setting by the time you get to Crowther HQ incorporated, Deletrius’s law firm. It’s the middle floor in an older brick office building, a few blocks shy of being in the ultra-downtown area. You stash your bike in the side alley, probably illegally, and also illegally boost yourself up to the fire escape so you can get roof access.

Roof access gained, you take a second to admire San Fransisco in the fading orange light, leaning a little over the concrete ledge. It’s like everything’s burning forever. The ocean rolls under the bridges stretching out to opposite sides of the bay. A cargo ship chugs away in the distance. Sky scrapers shine like slivers of sunlight.

Wolf would probably say something poetic or deep. He is still working. However, you know he gets done on Thursdays in about five minutes. Your timing is good.

>Await your prey. Keep an eye on all exits. Lots of people going in and out.
>Infiltrate roof access door, get to the lobby. You’ll be able to tail him the instant he’s out.
>Turn into a freaking shadow and do some crazy shadow stuff through the vents. See if you can spy on him while he’s still working.

You consider the possibility of sneaking into the lobby or even shadow hopping and spying on Wolfgang up close, but you then realize maybe it’s not a good idea to try to break into the Magister’s workplace. Who knows what kind or how many zany BS magical wards or spells Wolf’s dad has on that place. He probably has other people or things he’s keen on keeping out.

Sadly, you realize your rooftop climb was in vain. Good thing nobody has to know you climbed up here for no reason. That’s what being cool is all about – hiding all your mistakes so people think you’re perfect all the time.

You’ll go with the safe option: locate Wolfgang’s car.

After letting yourself down from the heights, you walk the streets and find no car. You guess it’s in a parking garage, maybe. Hopefully he didn’t take the bus or get a ride or something stupid like that.

You check out the parking garage nearby, noting that you’re running out of time. You’re a couple floors up in the dim, vaguely lit concrete structure when you the vehicle in question. It even has Wolf’s outdated post-it note to-do list stuck on the reverse side of the rear view mirror.

The elevator dings at the other end of the floor, the sound echoing distantly. You’re cutting it close. You duck behind the back of the car and out of view. You hear a lone set of approaching footsteps.

Verwelkens are born from shadows absorbing small pieces of the minds of other beings and cobbling it together into a new being which then animates the shadows containing the composite mind. All the powers that cost San do so because it's making babby.

You duck further and peek underneath the undercarriage, just to make sure it’s Wolfgang coming your way. Can’t quite see the face, but he’s the right shape and has the right walk and the right suit. Yes.

Stress: 19/103

You sneak yourself into the trunk of the car, slowly so you don’t make it rock around and give yourself up.

You still yourself and become darkness, then corner through into the back seat, hiding in the poor lighting at the bottom of the seats. It’s almost like you’re invisible. An invisible shadow. Swoosh.

You spot Wolf coming around to open the door, and realize cars have lights. You panic, but at the last second go back to physical form, wedged in the foot space just as the interior lights switch on. You just barely avoid getting slammed by dinky 4.2 watt bulbs in shadow form. (+3 Stress: 22)

You don’t breathe. You’re lying in the back of his car in plain view. But he’s already tossed his jacket into the passenger’s seat and climbed in, right in front of you. Wolfgang clicks his seatbelt in and goes for the start button.

Now or never.
>>
>>42469815

You reach around the seat with your tendrils, slowly and insidiously securing his arms, while you run another just past his ear.

You feel him go suddenly still, a prickle of cold dread in his stomach, exquisitely saccharine and sweet, all for you. “Fuck,” he whispers. “I swear to God if this isn’t you.”

You figure the jig’s up. You sit up on the backseat and reach around with your claws, lightly brushing the tips of your fingers along the base of his jaw and along the sides of neck, just briefly before you reach out further and grab him, hooking your arms around him from behind.

Then your favorite part. His fear vanishes in an instant, replaced with a deep, sickening feeling. Maybe that’s not the right word, though. The feeling’s more of a dizzying kind of impression, something that makes you feel kind of light headed.

He turns to the side to smile at you, his eyes catching what little light there is.

While you’ve got him where you want him, you go ahead and get a kiss in while you can. “Totally should have felt how scared you were,” you say into his face before you pull back, grinning.

Wolf gives you a wry look. “Uh. Yeah. I did, thanks,” he says. Then he smiles again, and reaches up to put a hand on yours. “Look at you.”

“Miss me?” you ask.

“I missed you,” he says. “If I didn’t say that enough over the phone, I’m happy to say it to your face as many times as you want.”

You snicker, and relinquish him so you can climb into the passenger side seat, carefully moving his suit jacket out of the way so it doesn’t get creased, or worse, mysteriously stained. “A couple times ought to do it,” you say.

“I missed you, I missed you,” he says, as if reading it off a chalkboard from the back of class.

“Eh. I was kind of hoping for more feeling or something,” you say, faking disappointment.

He considers your request, then leans over toward you. “Come here,” he says, beckoning like he has a secret.

You oblige him. “What?”

“Come on,” he says, beckoning still.

You lean closer.

He presses his lips right to the side of your mouth, but before you know what’s going on, he’s already made good his escape. You’re a little stunned. (+2 Stress: 24)

“I planned that for a while,” he admits.

You’re not sure if you appreciate surprise touchy physical stuff, but you give Wolfgang a free pass since you haven’t seen him in days. Also he’s a pretty good kisser. So. Not really bad. You put it out of your mind. You have plans. You think. Or at least plans to make plans.

“Uh. So uh. You busy later?” you ask. “I mean. Like. Later as in right now.”

“I was planning on whisking you away to someplace dark and quiet, just the two of us,” he says, puffing out his chest.

Impressive. “Really?”

“The plan is still in the development phase,” says Wolfgang, doing a good job of sounding like he’s not making it all up on the fly. “It may involve watching the sun set by the beach. Or walking along rooftops. Wherever.”

So, has it been mentioned how kickass Sierra is at grappling in combat? It's an untapped well of potential for one-on-one combat.
Shock-tendrils do a respectable ammount of damage, has the potential to prevent enemies from acting through continued use and uses a mere 2 pp per shock.
The paralytic venom might outright end combat against weaker enemies and will make fights easier when facing tougher ones that aren't immune.
Strength of will basically gives us the ability to throw anyone or anything down to the ground, or brake any hold held on us in case light prevents our VE tricks of escape.
Speaking of which, if we focus the shadows around us and our victim we get tougher.

If the enemy has magical protection we have our corrupting hexes to remove them while continued contact drains all their pp away.
And if we somehow end up pinned we have our tail and wing spikes that we can pull out as emergency weapons (You know, aside from all the spikes and claws and magic things).
>>
>>42470567
It gets even better if we take the time to inscribe some Zeshic stuff beforehand, Puppet Veins and Cardio-paralysis are hilarious in close combat.

Granted there are things we shouldn't grapple, namely Ranthixes or equivalent.
>>
>>42470567
Against mooks, sure. People like Meckor, Satt, Ranthix, Isaac, pretty much any dragon, and dozens of other characters we've never met would wreck us still.

>And if we somehow end up pinned we have our tail and wing spikes that we can pull out as emergency weapons (You know, aside from all the spikes and claws and magic things).
I think the whole "can generate explosions" thing is more pertinent here.

Anyway, just because Sierra's got some powers that are good for grappling/slugfests doesn't make it a good idea. The general lack of reliable or sustainable defense means it's going to be a really nasty fight at best when she's fighting anyone who isn't substantially weaker than her. Better to go for the ambushes. I still can't believe how little effort she's put into being not-shit at shooting things.

“Cheap date ideas, a Young Wolf publication,” you say, ribbing him.

“Yep. People don’t get rich by spending money,” he says, adjusting his cuff links. “At least not a lot of the time.”

“Is that the idea?” you ask.

“You want to blow a hundred dollars on a fancy dinner?”

You’ve spent too many nights eating out. “Eh.”

“Then beach walks it is.”

“Yeah, cool,” you say. “I have some stuff to show you though. Maybe after, we go somewhere without random people.”

“I’m thinking of a few places,” says Wolf. “Beach first, questions later.”

You nod in agreement. “Okay. I mean uh. Sure.”

He finally gets to starting the car.

--

Things are good. The sun’s down. The cold winds off the ocean are blowing in from distant waters. And you’re not the only couple holding hands on the beach. Funny you’re one of those people. Although your guy is much better dressed than theirs, carrying his dress shoes in his off hand, sleeves and slacks rolled up.

Man, Wolfgang’s way classier than you are. Guess that’s what happens when you limit your dating group to people who are secretly mostly demon.

It’s been a more quiet walk than not. You thought you’d want to tell all your stories and stuff. But you’re just enjoying the quiet, sharing it with Wolfgang. But the coarse sand’s starting to make your feet cold. You shiver.
>>
>>42470749

It doesn’t escape Wolfgang’s notice. “Ready to head up?” he asks, glancing at you before looking up at something in the distance. You don’t have your glasses on. You can’t see crap.

A deep, gargling voice calls out from behind you, down by the waterfront. “Sierra Beckhoff.”

You and Wolfgang both stop and look. It’s dark enough you can see by shadow.

It’s a man. He wears a yellow fisherman’s parka, long faded by weather salt water exposure, along with matching hat, pants, and boots. He holds out a lantern, which casts a faint beam of light onto the sand in front of him. Water pours off him in great rivulets, and a line of footprints behind him lead out of the bay. A wave washes up past his ankles, erasing the trail. An odd web of energy trails invisibly off him, like he got caught in a web and dragged it with him by accident. (Fisherman: 10 HP, 35 PP)

He stares directly at you, but you’re not sure if he sees anything.

“We’re leaving,” Wolf says under his breath, gripping your hand tighter in his.

No danger ring activity yet. Might be your chance to get out of here. Or maybe it's not looking for a fight?

Learning to swim might be something we would wish to consider.

Creepy fisherman coming out of the tide? You’re right there with Wolfgang on the whole leaving thing. But this thing knows your name. That might be bad, but you can’t bring yourself to run off without finding out why he’s here.

You scowl at the figure. “What the hell do you want?”

It stares at you for another second. “A message. The King of Tides asks you to leave,” he says, his words scratchy and difficult to distinguish from one another. The fisherman shifts around, and starts wading back out into the water.

That’s not weird or anything. (+3 Stress: 3)

“What the heck’s that about?” asks Wolf.

>Leave what? Whatever he’s paying you, it’s too much! Worst messenger!
>Well you tell the King of Tides to fucking... suck a sea slug, or something!
>Just... Mermene stuff. I don’t know.
>Get us out of here.

Our rightful rule has been challenged. We must respond accordingly for this infraction... at some point.

Just watch him go back to the watter

Laugh maniacly

I just realized something.

Shadowflame doesn't chemically burn. It doesn't use oxygen at all, it burns magic. It only gets extinguished by light.

We could set this cunt on fire and when he goes running back into the ocean, it will only make it worse because it'll be even darker down there. We can burn people underwater.

we can burn them all.

You’re not done with the yellow man though. “Leave what?” you shout at him. “The beach? It’s public property, you fucking commie!” He continues deeper into the bay. “Yeah, that’s right, slink away, whatever he’s paying you, it’s too much! Worst messenger!”

He keeps going, completely ignoring you. He’s now up to his shoulders in the waves.

“He knew your name,” says Wolfgang, watching the figure leave.

“It’s just... it’s Mermene stuff,” you say. “Please just get us out of here already.”

Wolf nods, and then suddenly, you’re relieved to find you’re somewhere else.

I wonder if the New York Coppers will try to get in touch with Isaac. If Isaac and David did have history during the war, the NY cops might end up wanting to report this newest developement to him, maybe in hopes of getting his assistance for their investigation.
>>
Oh hey, I just figured out that Davids rifle with the scope and side magazine feed was a FG42. I guess David was a SS paratrooper or got it from somewhere else.
>>
I think there will soon be another trip to Muir woods, especially now that Harvey got his wings and needs practice with them. It'll be a good opportunity to test out Dads old weapons among other things.

Of course. Plus we gotta get some quality bear time.
