You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

“And stay out!”

You watch them scatter through the haphazard landscape of the Scar, the vague corona of sunlight that emanates off your skin slowly receding. The half-hearted slab of concrete and rebar that was once the cap of an apartment block – presumably cast down to the ground by whatever thunderous clap turned most of the Scar inside-out – is the third such place you’ve found in last two weeks.

A collection of mottled rags lie about your feet, studded with pills of all sorts. Not Jack, judging by the smell, but poison of some other kind. Making sure to stay well out of its way, you toss it all into their fire.

Mostly these guys were just hobos of the mundane variety (quite a few’re moving in now). The Young X-Men are finding them, too – apparently they’re being supplied by those guys in the Halloween masks people were seeing around the Scar. You haven’t run into any more of them yet, but you’re quite keen to.

On the wall, there’s a pair of almost-intersecting semi-circles slapped on in red paint, a conjoining line passing between them. Pisces.

Emerging into the light of day, you breathe in, tasting the gravel beneath your feet and the grass beginning to grow in errant tufts throughout the ruins. The last scraps of snow are well and truly gone, disintegrating from even the tightest, darkest nooks and crannies of the Scar. Everything is starting to warm up – slowly, but surely.

The pair of ravens on your shoulders shuffle impatiently, talons pinching ever so slightly at the fabric of your coat, and you treat them to a handful of sunflower seeds. They found this place, so it’s only fair.
>>

You’ll do a quick sweep of the area, just to be sure, and then you can get on with your day.

You slowly meander through the outskirts of the Scar, picking your way between the ruins. That’s where these places usually are – on the very edge, where the buildings are a little more intact and their carcasses slump into one another like ragged old creatures clustering together for warmth. The impression they generate, in the areas where they fall the thickest, is that of a maze, or the entrance to a forest. Sunlight falls in dribs and drabs through ruined roofs, as though between a canopy of trees, and bundles of rusting rebar stick out awkwardly where the concrete is split and torn, almost mimicking the shapes of an underbrush.

It’s been almost three weeks since your encounter with Typhon. You’ve heard nothing from him since, he remains on the fringe of your mind – a shadow cast over even your deepest thoughts.

Things in general have been coming along. With a bit of help, you’ve managed to dig out a bunch of tunnels – which quickly turned into caves – into the subway system. A few people’ve decided to hunker down there with you, that Audrey chick with the baths included (turns out, she wasn’t selling bathtubs, she was selling baths. She can pull moisture out of the air or something, even heat it up), though a lot of people don’t seem quite ready for the tunnel-folk life.

You’ve been busy, so you’ve only had time for minor work – the biggest case you’ve gotten from the Phantom this week involved a serial tagger.

Moon Knight and friends have decided that enough is enough, and have finally gone on the offensive. Things in the city have calmed down as the tattered remains of New York’s largest crime families turned their attention away from each other and onto the superheroes kicking their asses.

Also, you’ve found out that your blood makes plants grow. Which has been useful.

You crest the top of a caved-in 7-11, surveying the outer limits of the desolation. No-one in sight but you and your little friends.

You guess they’re gone.

That’s good. You have things to do today.

It’s your girlfriend’s birthday tomorrow and you reckon she deserves something special.

You already got her a pair of gloves with bare knuckles, for, y’know, less tearing, but you feel like something less practical is necessary. Not that Laura isn’t practical – Laura is all practical all the time. And that’s why you want to get her something a little different.

You head out of the Scar. On your way, you pass by one of the Red Cross tents that have set up around the place, where a bunch of downtrodden shapes are cuing for food. You can smell the preservatives and colourings from here.

“Huginn, Muninn.” You say, fading out. The birds flap their wings, flinging themselves from your shoulders. “Watch.”

They settle in amidst the rubble. You don’t have to promise more food – they’ll find you again eventually. The birds here have become quite fond of you.

Head full of ideas, you make your way into the city proper.

You’re thinking something for her neck, maybe? Like a necklace.

You spend a few hours shuffling awkwardly around town, braving the brightly-lit halls of Top Shop and its ilk. You did a bit of searching on your Moon Phone about magic birth stone stuff and apparently Laura’s is amethyst, so you’re looking for something like that (you’re not sure why. You’re definitely not explaining magical rock stuff to her).

Eventually, you find a satin choker with an oval of mottled amethyst at its center. You don’t know much about jewelry, but you think it looks cool. Pretty, even.

And, at a hundred and fifty dollars, it’s just about affordable.

Very pointedly avoided eye contact with the girl at the register, you manage to exchange currency for the item in question, and you even pay a little bit extra to get it gift-wrapped.

>Current Funds: $1,448

Hurrying back out into the streets, you pocket Laura’s present, pausing at the side of the road to mull over the rest of your plan.

You were thinking of baking a cake. You’re not sure how to bake a cake, but there are internet videos and stuff, and really, how hard can it be?

You set off, making your way along the high street, toward the local Wal-Mart. You’re thinking something simple, given you relatively low experience with the caking arts, so you look up the recipe for chocolate fudge cake. Can’t go wrong with chocolate – or fudge. It’s a staple cake, probably the staple cake. The kind of cake other cakes aspire to be.

Like Captain America, but for cakes.

It comes to you, as you make your way out with ingredients in tow, that you don’t actually have an oven.

Oh. Oh yeah.

That’s sort of a problem.

This is a real problem, actually. Only civilized people have ovens, and you only really know a few civilized people. There’s the Phantom, who you know but only sort of know, as a boss, and you don’t feel comfortable asking your boss to help you with your cake-baking exploits. Other than her…

Slowly, debating yourself all the way, you head towards Peter’s place, the tall, closely-grouped shops and offices of central Queens slowly giving way to row after row of low houses.

Soon enough, you find yourself standing at the steps leading up to Peter’s porch, your throat feeling slightly parched. It’s not being in a residential stretch – that’s always a bit spooky, yeah, but it’s not that. You’ve gotten better with that. It’s just the idea of knocking on that door and asking for an afternoon with his oven. Technically his mom’s oven (or his aunt’s? God, you’re not sure which now. Ma’am is appropriate either way, right?), who seems nice, but she’s probably busy, right?

You slap your face, as if to wake yourself up, and take a deep breath, walking up the steps to the door. You knock.

After a minute or two, it becomes clear that nobody’s answering.

Your stomach turns. Peter’s probably at school (or being Spider-Man). And you guess his mom/aunt is busy?

Fuuuuuuuuuck. You glance down at your watch.

Useful though. If it wasn't for the eye part, I'd vote for it.

Who do you know who has electrical stuff?

The Hellions. They have a whole apartment, quite possibly full of electrical stuff. But, honestly, do you want to go explain your caking mission to Julian?

No. No, you don’t.

So you’re off to meet the Corsairs, then. The Corsairs aren’t what you’d call baking folk, but they steal lots of stuff. Maybe they’ve stolen an oven.

The red turns overhead as you make your way back into the Scar. The Corsairs make their home on the other side of the central crater to you, past the old garbage dump and the school and the eerily quiet playgrounds. You’ve never actual dropped in, just passed by, but you know the place – it’s not so much one building as the toppled remnants of two or three, a crisscrossing mess of enclosed spaces and open yards where the side of one of the apartment blocks that comprise the whole structure split apart upon impact with the earth.

The dog kid, Gleason, spots you coming. He doesn’t try to stop you, but he does regard you with a very curious eye – which is understandable. You beat him up pretty bad before.

The little alcoves formed from sideways-fallen balconies are stuffed with all sorts of stolen property. Clothes, electricals, miscellaneous little tools – you even spot a battered old tumble dryer squatting off to one side, though you don’t think it’s seem use in some time. There are a few mutants hanging around, some of them clearly not with Jono, and you manage to identify a friendly face sitting back against one of the balconies soon enough.

“JJ!” Megan smiles her big, silly smile. She’s wearing a pair of sunglasses about two sixes to broad for her face. She waves frantically. “Hey, JJ! JJ! Hey! Heyheyhey!”

“…Hi.”

You sort of contemplated ignoring her, but you need help. You explain your little problem, lowering your voice to talk to her.

Apparently the prospect of a working oven is enough to send her into a fit of giggling. Of course the Corsairs don’t have an oven, silly! They just microwave everything!

You feel steam begin to gather against the curve of your skull.

>JJ has gained ANOTHER stress point! Whoops!

“Don’t worry, though, I’ll help!” Megan leaps to her feet, rolling up the sleeves to her turtleneck and flexing an imaginary set of guns. “I’m an extreme baker!”

>JJ has gained PIXIE! She can’t really cook at all, but she brings ENTHUSIASM

Let's have it be a real birthday cake instead.

Maybe some hearts and a cute drawing of a lizard.

I kinda want to see just how Laura would process something like that
>>
Maybe it has a green lizard whose tail curves into a heart symbol?

JJ is going crazy, lets just let him do the frosting.
>>
>JJ tries to feed Laura cake, she smashes it
>Laura won't eat it because every birthday at the Facility Kimura would Laura's face into her cake and cause her to suffocate
>Laura has a pavlovian fear of birthday cake
>JJ weeps into his ruined cake

>cause her to suffocate
that would kill her, anon.

>JJ weeps into his ruined cake

>Not giving Laura something else that's sweet to eat.

No, at least that wasn't the case for Wolverine and he has weaker regenerative abilities. She'd just be in vegetative limbo until the obstruction cleared

No, that would knock her out. Actual brain death doesn't occur without several minutes of oxygen deprivation, and with a healing factor that time is probably doubled or even tripled.

More like effectively infinite, because comic science.
