You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Today begins your fifth day of trial in Belmore. Yesterday morning you began your journey into the Swamp, traveling through the giant hunting grounds and avoiding the arachnid nest. You made camp in a cave that the Grey Watchtower's scout had set up as a safehouse, but even there you were not totally safe. While out gathering firewood, one of the escorts was attacked by something and brought back to be healed. As it turns out, the escort had been attacked by a Nosferatu, and upon turning attacked and killed another escort. You and Justine were able to put the fledgling monster down, but it was too late to save the second escort. So your first day in the Swamp ended, with two casualties and 48 men remaining.

Early the next morning, a fire was made a good distance away from the safehouse and the bodies of the two dead escorts were cremated. Daniel gave them their last rites, but there was no time to grieve. The smoke would surely attract something, and you were on a tight schedule.

“The beacons should be a little under a day's trip from here.” You tell everyone, examining the map. “Once the beacons are lit, we'll make our way to one of the three safehouses located nearby and make camp.”

“Once those beacons are lit, we'll have to move quick to avoid whatever notices the light. What should we do if we're split up?” Nerillian asks.

“If we're split up, we'll meet back here at this safehouse.”

“We won't be able to wait too long if anyone has trouble meeting us here though..” Justine points out. “Our schedule is tight as it is, waiting too long will make us late and then this will have all been for nothing.”

Justine is right, your schedule is already very tight. If someone gets separated and can't make it to the safehouse fast enough you may have to move on without them. You don't like the idea of leaving people behind, but Belmore won't give you their support if you don't make it back on time.

“That's true. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to shave down time getting there?”
>>
>>42484300
“If we march quickly, we may be able to save time getting there, thus allowing ourselves some extra breathing room should we become separated” Ganelon offers. “However, it would mean that everyone will be tired when we finally arrive, we may want to spend time resting before lighting the beacons.”

'If you are concerned about being separated, you may consider stopping at one of the closer safehouses, then using your wings to travel the rest of the distance and lighting the beacons yourself. The others will not be able to help you should you run into trouble, but there will be no risk of being split up, and you will be able to escape faster by flight than on foot.' Galadriel offers.

It seems you have some options to consider then. You'll need to make a decision before heading out.

>Stay together, but risk being split up
>Forced march, save time but risk being tired
>Head to a closer safehouse and proceed by flight, risk being alone when the beacons are lit

We're gonna get fucked either way.

Before I vote, approximately how far are the Wyverns from us? I don't want the champion to be dragon-snax.
>>
>>42484630
They're pretty far away at this point. You're just reaching the end of the giant hunting grounds, so the wyvern's den is a long way back.

"Alright, so here's our plan." You tell everyone, placing the map down so everyone can see. "We're going to travel to this safehouse here, a few miles away from the beacons. From there, the rest of you secure the safehouse and stay put while I fly to the beacons and light them myself."

"You're going alone?" Erika asks.

"It's the best way to make sure we don't get split up. Once the beacons are lit, everything nasty within sight is going to come running. I can fly, but the rest of you can't. If I go alone, I'll be able to escape faster and no one can get separated in the confusion."

"That may be a good solution." Justine agrees.

"I don't think going off on your own is a good idea, but if you're sure then we'll wait at the safehouse for you to get back." Erika says with a sigh.

"I'll be fine Erika. If that's our plan, then let's go."

--------
After a few hours of marching later, you make your way out of the giant hunting grounds and come to an area which appears to be shrouded in fog. Looking at your map, you see this place is simply marked "???".

"Does the map say anything about this place? Reinhardt asks.

"There's three question marks here, but nothing else. Seems the scouts don't know what's here."

"This place seems very eerie...perhaps we should find a way around." Nerillian comments.

You look down at your map. There is a way around the fog, but the area you'll be passing through is marked "Patrol Route". You assume that means demons will be patrolling there.

Which path should you take?

"There's a way around, but it'll take us through demon patrol routes. I'd rather that then wandering around through the fog though."

"My brothers and I shall keep a watchful eye out. If we sense anything, we will let you know.." Ganelon says.

"Good. Let us know as soon as you sense anything."

--------
Your detour brings you away from the fog, and into an open area of the Swamp. Ganelon and the others from his order stay near the front, weapons drawn and ready in case something comes. For a while, it seems nothing will. Then...

"Brother Ganelon, do you sense them?"

"I do indeed. Siegfried, we have a problem."

"What's wrong?"

Ganelon points out towards the sky ahead of you. "Something is coming from the skies ahead. Many of them, at least thirty or so."

'Scavengers.' Galadriel guesses, referring to the demons you encountered near Iseria's border with the Forsaken Lands.

"Dammit, how far away are they?"

"They are flying very slowly, but they will be here shortly."

You look around the area for a place to hide. Unfortunately, this part of the swamp seems to have very sparse foliage, you're stuck out in the open.

"Unless you have a plan Siegfried, we should prepare for battle. The demons are nearly upon us."

>Plan of action?
>>
>>42486865
We can't use our wings this fight unless we mess up the plan to go off and light the beacons right?
>>
>>42486915
You can use your wings twice per day for one hour sessions each. You'll be able to get to the beacons and back to the safehouse in under an hour, assuming nothing slows you down.
>>
>>42486983
How many mages do we have with us and can they do some decent AoE?
>>
>>42487015
They're crusaders, so all of them should be able to cast basic spells. I'll say about 20 can cast serious AoE spells.
>>
>>42486865
>>42487091
Alright how about this.

Those 20 start prepping for some serious elemental AoE.

Mind Link with Joan.

We pop Wings, Haste, and Force Shield and get the attention of all 30 of the scavengers.

We hold them off and have them clump together around us.

Joan gives us a signal via Mind link and we Blink back down to the ground and the mages unleash their spells.

The rest of the crusaders use ranged weapons to finish off the stragglers or coup de grace the downed ones.

Sound good? Too risky? I could use a second opinion.
>>
>>
>>42486865
We need to get them all on the ground and kill them all, an aerial fight will just call the other flying monsters and mess up the split up for lighting the beacons.

Take it slow, wait for them to strike, but deploy a force shield at the last second while the others follow up for a kill.
>>
>>42487200
Can we control where we're blinking off to though? My mind's pretty fuzzy.

>>
>>42487278

>>
1. Mind Link with Joan, then deploy Wings, Haste, and Force Shield and distract Scavengers. Tell spellcasters to prepare AoE spells.
2. On signal, Blink down to ground. Spellcasters unleash their spells and archers fire volleys.

I'll need three rolls of 3d10. One to keep the Scavengers distracted, one to avoid harm, and one for effectiveness of spell/arrow barrage.

"Alright everyone, here's the plan. Spellcasters, start casting whatever spells you have that can hit multiple targets and fire on Joan's signal. Archers, when their spells go off, start shooting at the remaining Scavengers. I'll try to keep the Scavengers busy in the meantime, the rest of you keep the others safe if any of the Scavengers ignore me and go for the group."

The group acknowledges your orders, and starts getting ready. You start by casting Haste and Force Shield on yourself, then activate Galadriel's wings. When that's done, you cast Mind Link and create a link between yourself and Joan.

'When the spellcasters are ready, give me a signal so I can get out of their way.'

'Will do.'

Just as you finish preparations, you see a large flock of what looks like giant four-legged bats with horns flying in the distance. The flock, noticing your presence, starts to speed up.

"Mortals!"

"Mortals in the Swamp!"

"Get the mortals!"

You can hear them squabbling even from here. Once they notice your group, you take to the skies and shout back at them.

"Hey! Over here you rats with wings!"

"Shiny mortal!"

"Get shiny mortal!"

"Capture it for Master!"

Hey if you feel uncomfortable s'all good. Now lets see how much HP we lost.
>>
>>42488392
The flock splits, half of them following after you and the other half heading straight for the group. You weren't able to distract them all, but at least you were able to distract some of them.

The rest come flying after you. You're able to outmaneuver them for the most part, but some manage to catch up to you, slashing at your Force Shield to no avail. Suddenly you're glad Leviathan helped you improve this spell, because otherwise you doubt the shield would have withstood their combined assault.

'Siegfried, we're ready!'

With Joan's signal, you cast Blink to escape your pursuers, landing on the ground with the others. You see that some Scavengers are flying away, carrying people in their clutches. It seems they managed to snatch away a few of your escorts, leaving you behind to take their spoils back to the nearest farm.

"Now!" Berry squawks, and the mages all cast their spells. Fireballs, lightning bolts, and a barrage of other spells fly through the air, colliding with the remaining Scavengers and sending them spiraling to the ground. The archers begins firing volleys at the remaining Scavengers, leaving only five Scavengers remaining.

Realizing that the odds are not in their favor, the remaining Scavengers begin to fly away, some shouting curses and others screeching nervously.

Unwilling to leave your allies behind, you quickly mutter the incantation for Curse of Ice, casting it on Nerillian's bow.

"Nerillian, shoot down the Scavengers taking people away. I'll chase after them by flight."

Nerillian nods and draws his bowstring, firing after the Scavengers while you chase after them. There are seven Scavengers, two of which are carrying two people in their claws for a total of nine humans. You target the closest one holding two and slash it's feet off, freeing both of them. The Scavenger howls in pain overhead as you dive after the two humans, grabbing them and quickly dropping them off on the ground before chasing after the next.

The next Scavenger you target has two people in his hands as well, but you see patches of ice on his flank. It seem Nerillian is hitting them, but not in a way that can knock them out of the air. Targeting his frozen side, you slash down at the Scavenger, shattering the glass and taking a large chunk out of his side. As the Scavenger begins to plummet down, you pull free both of the humans he had in his grasp and carry them down to the ground, going after another.

It's not until you get closer to the next Scavenger that you notice who the person in this Scavenger's claws is. Avaline, who appears to have dropped her sword, swings her fist angrily at Scavenger to no avail. Your sword proved to be much more effective, once again separating the Scavenger from his legs and grabbing Avaline out of the air.

"Siegfried? Oh thank you, I knew you would-"

You don't listen to the rest of what she says, as you take off as soon as she's safely on the ground. There are four Scavengers left, each carrying one person. It looks like the Scavengers are flying towards the fog, maybe hoping to lose you in it.

Casting Curse of Ice on Galadriel, you shift her into a bow and start firing at the fleeing Scavengers. Your arrows find their mark, freezing their wings and causing them to plummet towards the earth. Moving fast, you Blink to the first Scavenger and pull him free, blinking to the ground to drop them then back to the next Scavenger. As you reach the last crusader, the Scavenger takes a swipe at you with it's free claws, grazing you.

>45/50 HP remaining

Thankfully, you manage to pull the crusader free before it can take another swipe. Just in time too, you're hovering just a few feet above the ground when you pull him free. The Scavengers, however, land with a sickening crack. They don't get up after that, so you assume the fall killed them.

"Is everyone alright?" You asking, struggling to catch your breath.

"I thinks so." One of the crusaders answers. "...Are you, sir?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." You tell them. In truth, you're feeling very light-headed right now. Must have been from all the spellcasting, you may want to hold off on the spells for the rest of today.

"Come on, we still need to keep moving. Lets get back to the group and move on before another patrol comes."

The sun has almost disappeared behind the horizon when you reach the next safehouse. This one is built underground, the secret hatch inside hidden by an illusion. Were it not for the map, you may never have known it was here. Behind the hatch is a ladder leading down, which everyone climbs down one by one.

Once inside, everyone starts setting up camp for the night. Meanwhile, you start getting ready to head for the beacon.

"Are you sure it's okay for you to go by yourself?" Erika asks before you go.

"I told you, I can take care of myself."

"I'm not saying you can't, I'm just saying it might be a good idea to bring someone with you at least. You can carry people with you while you're using those wings, right?"

"Just one."

"Well two is better than one at least. It won't hurt to bring someone as backup."

You're not sure one other person will make a difference when your plan is to go, light the beacons, then get out. That said, you don't think you'll be able to cast many more spells after the fight with the Scavengers, so maybe bringing a spellcaster couldn't hurt. Still, bringing someone with you might slow you down.

Erika sighs. "Alright, whatever you say Siegfried. But I swear to Aureus, if you go getting caught a second time I'm gonna break your legs so you can't run off and get captured again."

"Gee, thanks for watching out for me Erika." You say dryly. "Anyways, I'm off. I should be back before too long, try not to freeze to death before then."

"No promises." She says, as you start climbing up the ladder and outside into the freezing cold night.

-------
You fly quickly, so as not to waste time with Galadriel's wings. It takes about 20 minutes or so of flying for the beacons to come into sight. The wall's ruins look even more dilapidated now then they did in Galadriel's memory. Vines cover almost all of the wall now, what parts of it are still standing. Two stone towers rise high above the wall, the beacons.

'There they are.' Galadriel says. 'It has been a very long time since I was here, yet still the beacons stand.'

'Probably not for much longer.' Leviathan adds. 'They look like they'd fall to a strong wind.'

'It doesn't matter, so long as they're still standing we can finish what we came here to do.' You tell them, flying up to the first beacon.

The beacon sports a large brass brazier, presumably where the fire goes. However, you don't see any logs inside.

'Guess we'll have to look for firewood then.'

'No need.' Galadriel interjects. 'The beacons are magic. Assuming the enchantments still work, pulling the rope overhead should light the beacon.'

You look up and, sure enough, there is an old rope hanging overhead. It is tattered and stained with age, but still intact. The second beacon should be the same.

You take a deep breath and reach for the rope. Before you can pull it, however, something catches your eye. A dim green light, far off in the distance.

Well shit

Hope Gal and/or Levi could figure out what that light was,I mean they should have much better senses than we do
>>

'Do you guys see that?' You ask, pointing in the light's general direction.

'I see it. I was hoping you wouldn't.' Leviathan says with a frustrated sigh.

'I did not notice it until now.' Galadriel says, sounding worried.

'Can you tell what it is?'

'Black riders, two of them. They don't appear to have noticed us though. I think I see something else with them as well.'

'Mortals.' Leviathan says. 'If I had to guess, it looks like they're escorting them to a farm.'

Come to think of it, the map does mention that there is a farm a few miles east of the beacons. That might be where they're heading.

'If you saw them, then why did you not alert us sooner?' Galadriel asks angrily.

'They're on a mission, they probably won't chase after us even after the beacons are lit. Mentioning them would only make him want to run in like a fool, so I kept quiet.'

'How many are there?' You ask.

'Two. Listen to me though, you don't want to fight Eligos's Black Riders. Even if there's only two, they're out of your league right now. Besides, if they're taking them to a farm then you're better off trying to rescue them later, when you actually have an army at your back and aren't on a time limit.'

You admit, you're torn. From Leviathan's tone, it sounds like these Black Riders really are dangerous. That said, just doing nothing doesn't sit right with you.

'Galadriel, what do you think?'

'...I do not wish to say this, but the Leviathan may be right. The Black Riders are Eligos' favored warriors, you are not strong enough to battle them now. Though I hate to say this, rescue may be too dangerous.'

'See, even the angel agrees with me. Now, can we light these beacons and get out of here before something notices we're here already?'

'...Dammit, I guess it's true I'm in no shape to mount a rescue.'

'Finally, we all understand, now can we please light the beacons and get out of here?'

You hate how quick Leviathan is to abandon these people, but you agree that should get out of here. You reach up and pull the rope, causing the brazier to spark and, slowly, a fire begins to burn in it's basin.

'One down, now for the next one.'

As you fly towards the second beacon, you hear the sound of howling in the distance. Below, you can already see things start to crawl out of the foliage and towards the beacon. Arachnids, strange mud monsters, and all sorts of other creatures are attracted by the light.

When you reach the second beacon, you pull the rope and it lights as well. The Swamp's denizens are starting to gather below, but they pose little threat while you have your wings. As you take to the skies, however, you look back and see that green light has grown brighter. You can see four figures, two on horseback and two on foot. You can't make out any details from this far, but you feel a chill run up your spine the moment you look at the two creatures on horseback. They don't pursuit you, but you can't help but feel an unnatural sense of dread as you fly away.

Days passed, and finally the Grey Watchtower's walls came into view once again. Little of note had happened on your way out of the swamp, there were a few small encounters but no one else was lost. As your group approaches the Grey Watchtower, men start to enter the field to meet you. In front of them stands Knight-Captain Aleksander and King Feliks of Belmore.

"We saw the beacons light up a few days ago." The king says. "Well done. Few journey into the Swamp and live to tell the tale. It seems your group has returned mostly intact though, color me surprised."

"Not completely intact, your majesty. We lost two people in the Swamp, nearly lost more."

"I see. Even so, that is surprisingly few given your task. Either way, you've completed your task and so as king of Belmore, I vow that you shall have our aid in the coming crusade."

"That's it? No ceremony or anything?"

"Void no, there's no time for that. Maybe Galloway would spend time on such pleasantries, but I've been away from the capital for far too long, I can't afford to waste even more time out here in this thrice-damned cold. The captain has witnessed my vow and you have witness my vow, that's good enough."

"Besides, it seems you don't have time to wate on pleasantries either, Champion." Aleksander adds.

"What do you mean?"

"We've received a letter from Knight-Captain Laurentius of the White Watchtower. It seems he's having trouble dealing with the king and he needs you back as soon as possible."

"Trouble with the king? He said before we left that he had everything under control. What happened?"

"Damned if I know. You'll have to go back and ask him yourself. Come on then, we'll discuss exactly how you're getting back once we're inside."

------
The Scavengers lower their heads before the robed figure. Fear is etched on their face, as the robed figure glares down at them from his bleak throne.

“You saw the Champion, and you did nothing to kill or capture him?” The figure asks, cold mist escaping his hood as he speaks.

“W-We did not know it was him, lord. One mortal looks like the rest.”

“Normal mortals do not sprout angelic wings and fly.”

The Scavengers wince at their lord's words. They knew something was different about that mortal, but none of them were smart enough to know why.

“Raise your heads.” The robed figure demands. A jolt of relief flashes across the Scavengers' faces as they raise their heads, wiped away in a second when they see the giant horse's hoof hovering over their heads.

“I have no need for servants as foolish as you. Begone.”

>>42492674
The horse smashes it's hoof down on both their heads at once, the sickening sound of crush of their skulls cracking echoing through the nearly vacant room. Another figure steps out from the shadows, shaking his head at the bloody mess left behind by the Scavengers' deaths.

“Did you take care of the others?”

“They have been punished accordingly, my lord.”

“Good. Tell the servants to clean up this mess, their smell offends me.”

“It shall be done, my lord. If I may ask, however, what is our plan of action? If the Champion has gained Belmore's support, then another crusade lies just on the horizon.”

“He has not gained all of their support. Lilith tells me that Iseria has yet to pledge it's support.”

“I see. I assume she has a plan then?”

“Perhaps. If we are lucky though, her plans will fail.”

“You desire a crusade, sir?”

“It has been far too long since the mortals have wandered into my web. Their crusade would prove a worthy distraction from the monotony of the past centuries.”

“Indeed. Shall I rally your armies in preparation then?”

“Do as you will.”

The second figure bows and fades away, leaving the Lord of Fear alone in his throne room. 'Another crusade?' He thought to himself. A grim white smile began to spread across his face. It had been far too long...

Seriously, why do Alastor and Fear guy put up with this? How have they NOT started something yet?

Oh, and here's a question: Can angels and demons improve by regular training, or are they stuck with eating other demons until diminishing returns just makes it pointless?

>Seriously, why do Alastor and Fear guy put up with this? How have they NOT started something yet?
You wouldn't know. Used to be they would attack fairly regularly, but they've been pretty quiet for the past few centuries.
>Can angels and demons improve by regular training, or are they stuck with eating other demons until diminishing returns just makes it pointless?
They can improved through regular training, but it's harder to get stronger that way then it is to just eat other demons. Galadriel got to where she is through a mix of regular training and natural ability. Normal seraphs are just under the average demon lord in terms of power, but it's possible for them to grow above them. Galadriel is one such example.

On a related note, angels can get stronger by eating their own kind the same way demons can, but they find the idea about as disgusting as humans find eating other humans. Demons don't really care though.
