Leaving behind the noises of shattering glass - fingers crossed that Mistress will not simply leave the mess until I return! - I set out, following the edge of the bog northwest. That's the direction Mistress said to go. I just hope I leave the bog behind soon. I really don't understand what would cause Mistress to make her home in such a stinky place! Who would ever want to live here with the stench, mud, and all the bugs. Well, not today of course, but on any other day of the year they would probably be swarming around me, eager to give me all kinds of annoying diseases. Papa already has enough on his mind, it wouldn't be fair if he had to worry about me being sick, too!

Or... if he had to worry when I don't come home tonight.

Oh no! I haven't even talked to him at all today! I don't know what I would've told him - certainly not that I'm going to be performing witch rituals deep in the forest on the night of the Joining because a lady in the woods told me to! - but I should've told him at least something so he wouldn't have to worry. But it's too late to turn around now, all too late. Please don't do something stupid because of me, Papa.

I try to shake the thought, seeking comfort in knowing that at least I've reached the end of the bog. In fact it took barely a quarter of an hour to cover the distance. The bog must be much smaller than I thought. From here on however, I have only my compass to guide me. I don't really know any landmarks to follow, not this far inside the forest. Amalia probably would, she's much better at being in the woods than I am. And she can't help me tonight. Not that I could ask her to follow me out on this night, not after what happened. That would just be super mean!
>>
>>42578977
But if she had not still been out of town with her father, I could have at least counted on her to lie to Papa for me. The only other person in Hinde I've told of my plan to become a witch apprentice is Kerstin, but I haven't told her what I'm going to do tonight either! Maybe... maybe she knows anyway? She knows all kinds of things. She's actually the one who told me there was a witch near Hinde, so maybe she also knows about the Rite of Initiation? Maybe?

Oh, but I have to stop worrying! How am I going to perform the Rite if I can't even clear my thoughts? Concentrate, Nadja, concentra- Hey isn't a Dragonscale bush? The one uses to make Mistress' tea? The shape is just right, the color of the leaves is just right. I bet she'd be happy again if I brought her some of these. And maybe proud too!

Or would she be angry that I let myself be distracted from the Rite? Sometimes she's really difficult to understand. There's still a few hours until night, but she didn't actually tell me how far it is.

No no, focus! What if I got lost on the way and didn't make it in time because I stopped to pick flowers? Mistress would be furious! And I'd have to wait an entire year for the next chance, if Mistress even lets me have one! No, it has to be tonight.

A sudden rustle of leaves behind me. I turn with a jump, seeing the very same bush I had just been looking at still shaking its branches and, when I squint my eyes just right, a trail of weak right glitter leading deeper into the woods, towards the East. Maybe it was a good thing I didn't stop if something was hiding in there. I should probably be more careful if I don't want to get attacked by a wild animal. They're probably all scared and trying to find places to hide for the night.

But not me. After all, I remind myself, I am a witch. Well, witch-apprentice. Witch-apprentivce-to-be. Yes, that's it! Witch-apprentivce-to-be Nadja fears nothing! Witch-apprentivce-to-be Nadja is the one that should be feared, yes she is!

As I carry on, gradually and barely noticable if I hadn't been looking closely, the forest seems to grow thinner. The thick, old trees around Hinde and Mistress' house have slowly been replaced by thinner, smaller trees. The light of the Day Star easily slips past these cannopies, giving this part of the forest a much more cheerful atmosphere. Still, I definitely haven't been in this part before, which is a little unnerving.

But this must mean that the trees here are younger, and if they're younger I must be closer to the edge of the forest. And that's where Mistress said the ritual site would be. Northwest, along the edge of the forest. It's not even night yet and I'm almost here! I am the best apprentice ever!
>>

"Stop!" A voice cries out behind me, strangely high-pitched, much higher than any voice I've heard. I turn, but nobody is there. Did I imagine it?

"Who's there?" I call out to whoever.

"It's dangerous, come back!" The voice calls again, seemingly from somewhere among the trees I just passed.

But why stop? This is northwest, that's the way Mistress said to go. What if it's a trick? Maybe the voice is trying to lure me close so it can catch me? Or eat me! I don't want to be eaten!

Or maybe it's someone who's just trying to help..?

This is hard! If the voice is right and I ignore it, I'll be in danger. But if the voice is bad and I follow it, I'll be in danger too. No matter what I do, it's a risk. Wait wait wait, I just got the best idea!

"Come out here and talk!" That way, if it's something bad I'll be ready to run instead of getting caught!

"No, it's too dangerous! You must come back now!" The voice insists.

"But you might be a monster! Let me see you first!"

"I am NOT a monster!" Amazingly, the high pitched voice achieves an even higher tone, so high I'm surprised I could even hear it.

"Well, if you don't let me see you then I don't trust you!"

There's no response.

"And then I'll just keep going!"

Still, the voice does not respond.

"Well...?"

I guess it left? In that case, I guess I'm continuing forward. Slowly, though. After all, I still have time to find the site, there's no reason to rush when I don't know if it's safe.

It is little more than a handful of minutes until I see it. Had I not been looking specifically for it, had a part of my brain not reminded me, I might have kept walking until it was too late. Just up ahead, is the edge of the forest. The line Mistress said not to cross. Is this what the voice tried to warn me about? I am still a short distance from the end, though, surely Lily wouldn-

From above, the figure of a girl, even younger than me, appears, landing elegantly on the path ahead. Just a few moments of walking more and I would have been right underneath her. From here, I feel I can probably still run, if I have to.

"Heehee! Are you a new playmate? I'm Lily, what's your name?"

Nothing about this girl seems quite right. She's smiling at me, but smile is completely wrong, making my stomach turn itself. Her legs are bare and covered with the scrapes and scars of a young child hard at play, but at the same time she wears expensive-looking jewelry that grown women would wear. Or someone with very rich parents. Her clothes appear ragged, and she's covered by an adult-size jacket that she seems to be using as if it was a cape.

Hello Lily, it's very nice to meet you, but I can't play yet. Mistress Julie (or The Raven, if that's how a witch is usually called) has sent me to attempt my initiation; I definitely can't be late.

I'm definitely for full disclosure, she's one Mistress' students.

If Lily DOES "officially" invite us to visit at our leisure, we might do so once speaking to Mistress about the safety of visiting.

It was implied by Mistress that it is ok to cross the line if invited by Weeping Lily, although the safety of it is unknown, so better not to promise something we have no idea about.

>>
>>42581792

Probably, I'm surprised more anons were so willing to go the full disclosure route.

It's like anon thinks nothing bad will ever happen if we are stupid. Mistress even warned us it would be dangerous from the start.
>>
>>42581861
She said the ritual would be dangerous. All she said in regards to Lily was "don't risk angering her by intruding on her territory without an invitation".
>>
>>42581935
Miss Not a Monster said it's dangerous, even if Mistress didn't.
>>
>>42581935

We have no idea if we're getting tested on the way, and we were already tempted once to wander away from our search (the tea leaves). I'd personally suspect that we are being tested, whether by group effort or the Sisters themselves to see how dedicated/worthy we are.

Regardless, our initiation really should be taking precedence, and we need to be more careful.

Even Lily says it's dangerous, and we shouldn't dilly dally around here, we only have a few hours to find the ritual site. We spent 15 minutes to the tea leaf spot, and no idea how long we spent getting to Lily, so we're on the clock.
>>
>>42582088
We aren't dilly-dallying. We're saying we'll play later.

If we're hopelessly optimistic, she might even guide us to the initiation.
>>
>>42582171
>We aren't dilly-dallying. We're saying we'll play later.

We already spent "a handful of minutes" just waiting for Lily to show herself. Since we're apparently not going to just run off, we'll be talking with her for awhile.

Since Weeping Lily is dangerous, I wouldn't presume to trust anything about her until our Mistress tells us otherwise, and promises are dangerous.

As it is, Mistress specifically told us that our choice regarding the Rite has "already been taken away".

That tells me we're already being tested in some fashion.

>If we're hopelessly optimistic, she might even guide us to the initiation.

Eh, it could happen, but from what was written in our notebook, the words of our Mistress, and her demeanor once our journey started, I think being hopelessly optimistic will get us dead or worse.
>>
>>42581110
Danger. Every fiber of my being is telling me to run away screaming, but... But what if she could still get me somehow with witch magic? It would be better if I can talk to her, convince her to let me go. Didn't my notebook say she was one of Mistress' students? Maybe she'll respect that!

"Hello Lily, it's very nice to meet you, but I can't play yet. Mistress Julie has sent me to perform my Rite of Initiation and it's very important that I'm not late, but maybe we can play later?"

[Lily's opinion has increased by +5]

"WEEEEE!" Lily screams gleefully, clutching her hands while jumping on the spot. "I get a new sister! A pretty, shiny, new sister! We'll play lots of games and have sleepovers and we can teach each other new tricks! Not like stupid Sparrow who never comes to play anymore! How long does she need to catch some stupid wizard? She should just ask for my help instead and we could all play with her wizard! Heeheehee!"

Sparrow. That's the other name in the notebook, Mistress' second student. It's actually a little exciting, finding out more about Mistress' past, but Lily seems the type to get... carried away. Especially by this latest train of thought.

"Yes but uhm, I really need to hurry so I don't fail. So see you later, okay Lily?"

"Wait! Don't you want me to help you?"

"Bwuh? You want to help?"

"Of course! If you fail, maybe I get a new toy, but if you win I get a new sister!"

Huh. She wants to help, but... isn't that cheating. I'm supposed to do it alone, aren't I?

But do so politely, and thank her for offering!

"I would be a poor sister if I can't do at least this much, right? Besides, you already helped me by warning me of the danger ahead."

We need to keep in mind that nobody would willingly go outside during the Joining because of the danger, yet Lily is out here.

She's either part of the test/rite, or she's dangerous to us. Maybe she could become a friend if we can at least pass the Rite on our own power.
>>
Lotta people who don't want directions here. Is it really so different from the directions we got from Mistress?
>>
>>42582537
>We weren't waiting. We were walking until we reached the edge.

Nope, it said we waited "a handful of minutes" while we were talking to Lily, before she showed herself. Whatever time we spent getting to the edge was additional.

It doesn't sound like much, but it all adds up. I've done timed outings in the wilderness before, you find that simple things add up really quickly, especially when you have to get to a specific general location within a limited time.

>>42582643

We're supposed to be doing this alone. Don't forget, the Sisters will be judging us, whether we are worthy or not.

I'm pretty sure they would be able to divine whether we had extra help, or were somehow cheating.

My personal feeling is that Lily is part of the testing or Rite, especially how she comments that she might receive a "toy" if we fail, but that may just be my paranoia speaking.

>>
>>42582824
Allow me to clarify. The handful of minutes was the time between Nadja deciding to ignore the warnings of the hidden voice and until she spotted the edge of the forest, upon which she immediately stopped because that one anon remembered the danger. I almost decided to drop her entirely because of that, but I like her so instead I rewarded him by making flight an option.
>>

"No." Not only would it be wrong to cheat, but what if trying to cheat meant I failed right away? In fact Lily could be part of the test too! The forest is huge, but she just happened to be where I would be. What are the chances of that?

"Thank you, Lily, but I need to do it alone. If I couldn't do it without your help, I wouldn't be a good witch, right?"

Lily's grin vanishes briefly as she becomes lost in thought, only to return in full force a moment later. "Yes yes! A weak sister is just like toys! Heeheeheeee! Are you strong, sister?"

I don't think she realizes just how heavy that question is. At least I hope she realizes how frightened I am, how much I wish I had Amalia to back me up, or Kerstin to tell me what's right or wrong, or Papa to hold me when I'm scared. But I don't. I have be brave alone, be strong alone. I have to believe on my own. And I think I do.

"Yes, Lily. I am strong, and brave, and clever."

"Okay!" She exclaims as she turns away, a giant weight suddenly lifting from my chest now that her eyes are off me. "Good luck, Sister!"

She leaps into a sprint and in a few moments she has vanished from sight, returning to her own domain. Though I wonder, if she used to be Mistress' apprentice... how old was she at the time? She doesn't look more than ten now. Mistress calls me little, but could I actually be her oldest apprentice?

I let out a sigh, annoyed at myself. I'm distracting myself again, thinking about all the things I'm not meant to be thinking about. Focus on the Rite, Nadja!

Now let's see... I went almost straight Northwest and the site is supposed to be near the edge of the forest. So from here I either go North, or South. But South would almost be like going back, so it makes more sense to go North!
>>
>>42583569
Fortunately, no other voices or witches interrupt me, and the search turns out to be little more than a short walk of ten minutes to find the clearing that matches Mistress' description perfectly. Large, open, and with four black pillars arranged in a square. Clearly, the inside of the square is ritual area, which I am not to leave once the Rite has begun.

But I have time yet before that, the sun is only just beginning to set. Wondering how to spend the time, I am reminded that Mistress said she left food in the backpack she gave me. Time to refuel!

A quick and efficient unwrapping later, the meal is revealed as a simple rye sandwich of sliced ham, cheese, and tomatoes. In a way, it's a little disappointing as I was expecting something far more "witchy", but on the other hand, I'm glad she didn't decide to pack something icky like toad's eyes or snake pasta!

A few minutes later, I find myself uncomfortably idle. I still have time to pass before the Rite can begin, but I can hardly just take a nap out here! I need to do something!

Who are these deities and why would we want to pray to any of them in particular?
>>
>>42583591
>Say a prayer to Mara
>>
>>42583670
There is reason. Investigating either voices or plants. If you just want to stay put, say a prayer. Your vote is essentially do nothing and that's boring and inefficient.

>Not paying attention to the lecture about the twin moons

Anon, Mistress would be ashamed of you if you were her apprentice
>>
>>42583922
... or, you know, NOT getting distracted, NOT getting lost in the forest and NOT failing the Rite because we disobeyed a simple order of "get there, wait for your time, make your pledge".
So I don't see that as inefficient. I say that's our duty to the Mistress and ourself to not end up dead or lost or out of schelude
>>

I really don't like to throw infodumps out of nowhere if I can show something within the narrative instead. That's really the point of giving you this option now, at a time where it would make sense for Nadja to want to pray.

>>
>>42584201
Yeah, and witches are suppose to pass their Rite. And we are there for that Rite, not botanic expedition in the middle of night in unknown forest.
I mean just THINK about it - you really want to look for plants in the dark? In a forest?
Nadja probably should be now paralysed from fear and doing her best to muster herself to not run away screaming.

>>42584398
Eh, semantics. The vote had been open a while, he did the right thing.
>>
>>42584350
No, it's not majority. Majority would be if you had half+1 vote, not "the most votes". What it is is how first-past-the-post voting works. Which is one of the most toxic ways of doing elections, as it left 9 out of 13 people without anything.
>>
>>42584278
The night of the Joining isn't particularly dark.

Don't worry, Nadja literally just has to look up to get an accurate idea of when it's time. One of the advantages when your appointment is with celestial bodies.
>>
>>42584470
Well there aren't really seats or whatever to distribute here anon, it's not very easy to do proportional representation.

>>
>>42584544
The most votes after a certain time is the best way to do voting in a quest. The only other feasible option is first to reach a target no. and that's complete shit.
>>
>>42584691
Hey!
The first vote goes is great for quests where QM makes update every five minutes!
>>
>>42584551
Majority, already said that.
If no majority is reached - OP's choice.
Simple, effective, reliable, let-downproof
>>
>>42584756
Quests where a QM makes an update every 5 minutes are almost without exception complete shit so that makes sense.
>>
>>42584767
It opens up the QM to people yelling at HIM for preferring a choice, instead of the voters who got a one vote majority. Not many people like railroading.
>>
>>42584767
The fact is there aren't enough people for that to be even close to feasible and would completely fuck over writeins. The most votes wins is the best system, stop trying to bring your shitty "revolutionary" democratic system into a quest. Your idea would lead to a massive flame war pretty much every vote as a majority would probably never be reached and the QM may as well write a novel.
>>
>>42584767
>If no majority is reached - OP's choice.
OP chose to go with plurality so we get the same thing we got, OP just needs to reword >>42584200 as "I pick herbs as it got most votes."
>>
>>42584854
I honestly would prefer the QM write a novel.
>>
>>42584798
If majority won, then majority won.
If not, then it's OP's choice.

I don't see your point here, really. It's not about trolling, being smug or anything like that. I simply don't understand what's wrong with this simple solution. If everyone rolls with rules, there is literally no issue and no let-down, unlike first-past-the-post, where it's pretty much "this option got one more vote, so it won and screw you all who picked ifferently"
But I digress, while we should calmly wait for the post
>>
>>42584893
Then why the fuck are you complaining about voting if you don't care which way the story goes?
>>
>>42584919
It's not though. I can't think of many quests where a majority is reached even a third of the time, at which point, like I said, the QM may as well write a novel. Plurality is the best way to do quests, it's just true.
>>
Now that we've turned her down, what would have happened if we accepted Weeping Lily's help? I'm curious.

>>42584920
Preferring QM choice /= not caring which way the story goes.

>>42584919
Have you never read a quest with a bad playerbase? People would bitch at the QM constantly if they didn't pick whatever got the plurality every time.
>>
>>42584964
The QM runs a quest so he doesn't have to choose. The whole point of a quest is the participants chose what actions are taking and help direct the story. If the QM chose what happened most of the time, which he would if he for some bizarre reason used majority instead of plurality, then people would rightly call railroading and ask why he's running a quest not just writing the damn thing alone.
>>
>>42584964
I steer away from bad quests, instead of indulging them. You don't?

Really? I don't find it hard to believe at all.
>>
>>42585044
I guess it's more argument about the unsatisfactionary outcome of the vote than actual voting process. After all, literally one vote made the difference out here between four different options
>>
>>42585081
You did read the post where the QM said we were in almost zero danger of being late because we can look at the goddamn sky right? How are you still unsatisfied after that?

"A first-past-the-post (abbreviated FPTP, 1stP, or FPP), or winner-takes-all, election is one that is won by the candidate receiving more votes than any others"
"The first-past-the-post voting method is one of the several plurality voting systems."
"In North American English, the term plurality, also called relative majority[1] used in the context of voting, refers to the largest number of votes received by one candidate (or any proposal in a referendum) out of the entire group of candidates.[2]"
>>
>>42585112
Because I wanted a prayer. And got herbalism. That's how. And herbalism won by single vote. Every option reached the same amount of votes, then the single vote decided.

Well, I AM in a forest. I may as well practice the one thing Mistress has taught me so far: Gathering the useful bits from the various plants of the woods. I take a glance upwards, checking time. Both Mara and Vala are clearly visible in the sky, all of their beauty and imperfections visible to the naked eye. The great scar across Mara's left "cheek", the slight dark blemishes littering Vala's crimson skin. There's no other time of year they allow us to see them so close, and so few dare to watch. Maybe I'm lucky in a way.

Or maybe I'm just tremendously stupid. Either way, the sun is only about to set and it's clear I have a while yet until Mara and Vala align, so I set about inspecting the area immediately surrounding the ritual site, constantly reminding myself not to wander off just for the sake of a few pretty flowers. No doubt I am missing the vast majority of the pickings by this practice, but I need to stay ready, especially as the light of the Day Star fades, replaced instead by the tinted light reflected off of Mara's azure skin.

By the time I've done half a round of the flora immediately adjactent to the ritual site, I've managed to gather a few dozen leaves of the Ravensblood flower and a nice and fat Wyrmroot. I bet Mistress will be real impressed with that root when I come back. I tie up the pouch and store both it and the root away in the pack. I'm not allowed to bring that into the ritual, just as I'm not allowed to bring... my... clothes.

BUT WHAT IF SOMEONE IS WATCHING?

No, no that's crazy, who in their right mind would be out here tonight? It's dangerous! I'm not even sure I am in my right mind tonight.

But I know someone who definitely isn't in hers...

As if signaling impatience, an ear shattering crack comes blasting from above, like the sound of a hundred bolts of lightning striking the ground at once.

Damn it Nadja, stop wasting time! We've been naked before, now strip so we can finish the ritual!

Right, you're right, this isn't as important as the rite.

As if I could not have guessed from the sound, looking up I am met with the clearest sign that the Joining is underway. One moon, not two, of the most pristine white gazes down upon the land, and upon me, judging. In such a presence, any sense of modesty is washed from my mind and I quickly untie my dress. Clothed or not, before this presence I may as well be nothing.

No, not quite nothing, I think to myself. I am a witch, and I will prove it. First, with words:

"Sisters above, I have come to prove myself worthy of your blessings!"

"I pledge to You that I will never allow your gifts to be wasted, always used to their fullest extent!"

"I pledge to You that I will share your gifts with none but those proven worthy as I am about to!"

"And I pledge that I will.. That I will punish evil wizards misusing your gifts wherever I may find them! I... will make them suffer, I will be the punishment worse than death!"

That's not quite the wording in the notebook, but it was what I could say. I hope it's enough.

Nadja doesn't care about that. She's planning to keep being a witch secret from him specifically so she has options he'd frown on open to her.

Words to our pledge that is basically defining our very "being" as a witch and that we basically have to uphold no matter what changes might happen in the future.

>>42585794
The personal pledge is optional, but it cannot be delayed. You do it now, or never. Think of it like the personal bit on your application, giving your "employer" a chance to see who you are. If they like what they see, your chances will be better.

I count a majority in favor of the pledge, so we're doing that. I'll try to keep it "open" to accommodate the no-votes.
>>
>>42585901
But, it's kind of the whole reason we're even becoming a witch.
>>
>>42585913
I just feel like since that's something written in our pledge then it doesn't really feel like something only to be done once and then we've fulfilled it, it feels more like a life goal or something with what's written there.

"And lastly, I pledge that I will use my powers to always be the best daughter and sister to my Papa, to my Sister, to Mistress Julie... And to you!"

Silence falls on the clearing again, the Sisters showing no visible response to my words. For all I know, they did not even listen. But I want to believe. If this turned out to just be a big joke Mistress played on me, I would...

Another crack. Here comes the dangerous part. The pristine white begins to fade, streams of azure and crimson rushing across its surface, splintering and fracturing the beautiful union. Mere seconds later, the Sisters Joined is undone, her end marked by a great flash of silvery white, the two sisters emerging from the spectacle, separate and imperfect as always. The Joining is over. Only the aftermath remains.

Specifically, the shower of red and blue sparkles falling all across the world. Any sane person, or really any sane being as I have learned, will be somewhere they know they cannot be reached by the showers. But I am not allowed to leave the ritual area, this convenient square in the middle of a clearing that is about to suffer a barrage of sparkles.

At least there's nothing around to be rapidly mutated into something horrible here, except for me. That means all I have to do to stay alive is to dodge all of the hundreds of sparkles headed my way. I just have to look at the patterns. The swirling pattern of red and blue, constantly changing its shape, constantly changing its direction.

But others have done it, there must be some secret to this part. I just have to...

Wait.

I see it!

There's one spot that all the sparkles circle around but never touch. And if I'm not mistaken, that one point is... Right where I'm standing. Is that it? All I have to do is... stand still?

I close my eyes, cross my fingers, and...

It worked? Maybe they decided they liked my vow so they made it really easy?

>1/2
>>
>>42586959
More showers follow, but all throughout the night I recognize the same recurring pattern, I simply stand my ground and watch the sparkles fall around me, seeping into the ground below me. I wonder where they go from there? Into the roots of the trees maybe?

Finally, after painstakingly long hours of pretending to be a statue, long after Mara and Vala both settled in for the night with only the mess of their union left to remind me anything even happened, the Day Star casts its first rays into the sky. I am released, and with but one singly thought in my head.

Clothes! I left my things over by the pillar right... Where are my things? Where are my clothes? Where are my spare clothes?

They're gone!

Someone stole my things! Stole the herbs I gathered for Mistress! Stole my clothes! And...

And... My vision begins to darken, from exhaustion or shock I can't really tell.

SOMEONE SAW ME NAKED!

My legs begin to wobble, and next thing I know I am lying face down in the grass, as the darkness settles in, and I feel myself slipping away from this living nightmare.

THREAD FIVE END

Well, I guess that explains why we're all so concerned with what sort of hat we're going to end up with.
>>
That was... much, much easier than expected. What's up with that?

I think it's the boy who attacked us earlier
>>
>>42587051
My assumption is that if they didn't find our patronage agreeable there wouldn't have been a pleasant witch-shaped hole in the rain of horrible mutagenic snow.

Seems like first and foremost it's a test of favor, and then if you pass that it's a test of perception. If you're the sort of person to panic and run for it in the face of a little danger rather than opening your eyes and focusing on overcoming it, you're probably not witch material.
>>
>>42586981
Thanks for running, was it true that witches to be usually have to dodge or is the circle supposed to protect them from it?
>>
>>42587159
A pervert as well? That would completely doom his chances as a romance target. More than they were already.

>>42587093
Weeping Lily stole our clothes and is going to remodel them to be FABULOUS.
>>
>>42587195
Indeed, all we need now is that he's a wizard, that would explain why he stole the clothes anyways.
>>
>>42587195
We're going to catch him, tie him to us, and then friend-zone him. That will be his wizardly punishment.

Thanks for playing. I suppose there's something clever about thread five being the thread where Nadja becomes a witch, but as you can probably tell, I'm not nearly clever enough to have planned it.

I can say with almost absolute certainty that I will NOT be able to run another this thread this weekend, which means next one probably won't be until next weekend! That sucks, so I MIGHT try and see if I can scrape out enough time during the weekdays so we won't have to wait so long, but I promise nothing. As always, watch the twitter!

>>42587051
Maybe, as Nadja suggests, the Sisters decided they wanted her to pass and went easy on her.

Maybe someone cheated.

Maybe it's always like that and the point is simply to not panic.

Maybe it's a lesson / message.

Maybe it's a bit of all of the above.

Either way, I've dreaded this bit because I know I can't write it satisfyingly. I'm glad it's over so we can get proper witchy and get back to things I know.

>>42587238
Witches do this and similar to wizards surprisingly often.
>>
>>42587326
I mean, that first assault was pretty bad. Yeah worse have been overcome...but usually when said assaults are understandable in some way, if misguided, and also not aimed at 12 year old girls.
>>
>>42587363
>Either way, I've dreaded this bit because I know I can't write it satisfyingly. I'm glad it's over so we can get proper witchy and get back to things I know.
Just feels like Mistress built it up an awful lot for... that.
>>
>>42587470
We haven't discovered why he assaulted us. It's too early to say it's not understandable in some way.
>>
>>42586136
Could you at least try expressing please?
>>
>>42587499
He assaulted us because he was a big mean bully.
>>
>>42587363
Thanks for running
>>
>>42587514
That's probably part of it, but it's not the full story and you know it.
>>
>>42587499
Immediately understandable, I mean. It's certainly true that when left unexplained like this, anons are probably gonna form grudges that will be hard to break down even if there is a good explanation eventually.
>>
>>42587093
I'm betting it was Mistress. The initiation was the Sisters' test, this is hers. Can we get back to the cabin while struggling with our embarassment?

>>
>>42587363

>>
>>42587471
I feel like it's probably a little bit less impactful on the reader side of the equation since we didn't actually have to stand naked with our eyes glued skyward all night staring into a multicolored swarm of deathpellets lest one sparkle drift off-course and murder us.
>>
>>42587589
We'd win the Sparkleroll and go back to Mistress with cute cat-ears.
>>
Rolled 7735 (1d10000)

>>42587629

>>
>>42587687
Horrible effect for a spellcaster.
>>
>>42587629
>>42587687
>7735: Target's speech is delayed by 4 segments; +4 to casting times.
So Nadja is stuck forever speaking like she's a bad dubbing and is generally bad at witch stuff. Not dead, but seems pretty bad.

>Losing the sparkelroll

It would only theoretically affect hexes, and then only matter during combat. Plus, hexes are categorized under Penmanship in our journal so it might not matter to any.
>>
>>42587508
Think Birth of the Lich-Queen kind of tragic.
>>
>>42587869
Oh my...
>>
>>42587869
Sounds awesome. Now I'm sad we didn't choose that.
>>
>>42587869
Do you mean some specific Lich Queen, or in general? And, if it's the latter, what's the problem?
>>
>>42587927
>>42587932
While it would probably be interesting for us as players, I suspect Nadja (a generally pleasant and upbeat 12-year old) would have been greatly upset by being transformed into an unfeeling ageless horror compelled to hunt down wizards for all of her innumerable days.
>>
>>42588010
Well, if she was unfeeling then she wouldn't be upset, now would she?
>>
>>42588010
Or I guess she wouldn't have been upset because she'd have been transformed into a single-minded Witch Enforcement skeleton, but still.
>>
>>42588010
A few hundred years of life generally turn one from pleasant into jaded anyway.
>>
>>42588010
... And she will have an eternity to find a way to become not-unfeeling not-horror. And maybe, if she deems the wizards a serious enough problem, how to make wizards stop appearing, thus removing the compulsion you mention.
>>
>>42588010
Maybe it would be like a contract, we become a magical witch and our soul is stored in our locket and we have to hunt down wizards to obtain their grief seeds to replenish our powers .
>>
>>42587895

Papa never has a shortage of work equipping my undead army! Sure, he's animated bones now but he still loves me! He has to, I did all of this for him~

It would happen over time of course, a slight, lingering feeling of wrongness, Nadja wondering why nothing seems to hurt anymore, wondering why injuries never really affect her and yet never properly heal, before finally realizing that she has been wearing a useless suit of flesh all along.

And so is everyone else. Shouldn't I help them with that? Why does big sis keep trying to stab me, anyway? Maybe she's jealous. Don't worry sis, I'll help you first! That's how much I love you! Do you love me too?

But you know, that'd be blatantly breaking Rule #1. I think Nadja is interesting enough as she is, no reason to set her on a bad end so soon.
>>
>>42588246
Amen brother, did we ever get an idea of what Nadja looks like? I've been imagining her as the OP image but I'd like to know your image.
>>
>>42588246
Can we have this as a reboot or something after you are done with this quest?
>>
>>42588300
Witch Apprentice Nadja, the Definitely Nice And Not At All Evil Lich Quest would make for an amusing April Fools one-shot sidestory, at the very least.
>>
>>42588246
>Rule #1
The not wasting their gifts rule? I don't get how that one. Doesn't it mean they HAVE to do horrible things if their aim is to, say, take over a country? They aren't using their gifts to the fullest if they don't enslave a town, etc.
>>
>>42586959
>"And lastly, I pledge that I will use my powers to always be the best daughter and sister to my Papa, to my Sister, to Mistress Julie... And to you!"

Is Papa going to marry Mistress Julie? Or is he going to adopt her? Or is Big Sis going to marry her? These magical vows are so confusing!

Post-Resurrection Owen?
>>
>>42588295
Oh, that is how I imagine her. The OP image is basically Nadja's idea of herself as a witch-apprentice. Helpful fairy friends, sunshine and magic all around her, and yet somehow her dress never gets ruined (or stolen).

>>42588390
Rule #1 of the quest: Cute is imperative.

>>42588300
I dunno. Thing is, I absolutely love redemption and that's not really in the spirit of THAT idea, so I'd end up ruining it.
>>
>>42588758
>Thing is, I absolutely love redemption and that's not really in the spirit of THAT idea, so I'd end up ruining it.

>You are Big Sis. Your Lil Sis wanted to help your family and has become a Lich in the process. When you learned about that, you flew into a rage and stabbed her, causing her to flee. But now... you're not so sure that was the right thing to do. Can you mend your relationship with your sister?
There's your redemption. ;)
>>
>>42588758

She wants the same thing I do yesssssss
>>
>>42588758
>I absolutely love redemption
>Oath of Vengeance
>She will unleash every ounce of cruelty she can muster upon the wizard until such a time as the wizard's life comes to an end
So
What we need to do is minmax with cruelty being the min, making sure Nadja's cruelty is that of a tiny puppy?
>>
>>42588856
....can they be the child snatching kind?
>>
>>42588889
Absolutely. We'll train some fairies to sniff out little wizards among the population, befriend them, then lure them to our lair to be, err, punished.
>>
>>42588889
They have to be, but strangely they always seem to behave like they're kind around us...
>>
>>42588889
I'd rather have the cannibal kind. They child-snatch kid fairies to swell their ranks.

And Nadja shall rule a small empire of cannibal fairies.
>>
>>42588758
>Rule #1 of the quest: Cute is imperative.
So are we going to be fighting a conspiracy of mind-controlling kittens?
>>
>>42589009
I think the rule applies mostly to Nadja?

I'd vote to join the conspiracy without a second thought.
>>
>>42589009
>mind-controlling kittens?
So just normal kittens then? Mind control is clearly the only explanation for why people like the damn things in the first place.

Nadja pls, I hope there's some perspective stuff here. You shouldn't be sitting so close to a boiling cauldron that's higher up than you are. It might splash all over your head and you're not positioned high enough up to see whether or not it's starting to boil over.
>>
>>42591221
A true witch can tell whether a cauldron is about to boil over by the sound and smell. Eyes are for the weak.
