>You are one of two young Tuffle twins, thrown at Earth starting in early Dragon Ball by your "father"

>"Canon" has already taken a sharp turn from the "norm," as you'll readily see, and can take even sharper turns depending on the thread's action/dialogue choices and ideas

>Stats and dice mechanics will be used, and explained when needed as the quest progresses

>Let's all try to have some fun, ok?

You wake up fairly early in the morning and get yourself ready for the day. As you take out the new uniform design from Master Roshi and, after adding the usual little enchantments and enhancements with your Clothes Beam, you put it on and take a moment to let it all sink in. You look... good in it. Design is a bit warmer than you're used to, but with what you learned from that outfit Sanzo gave to Goku so long ago, you've been able to mitigate it. Chi-chi and Launch, both wearing the older Turtle School outfits, seem a bit impressed by yours. "Not bad, not bad at all." your blonde friend tells you with a pat on the head.

"Not bad? Hah, you look great, Master!" Chuu Lee adds with a cheerful smile. "Hope some day I'm good enough to deserve it."

Chi-chi nudges her in the shoulder. "Hey, you've made better progress than any of us have in such a short amount of time, I'm sure you'll be there in no time."

The four of you head down and meet the boys. Krillin has on the same outfit you do, though with a more orange color and a hint of blue in the highlights of it to contrast your redder tint, while Lapis and Lazuli have the older Turtle School. Your brother and Goku have on the more standard outfits as well, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Tao wearing their more standard Crane School getups. Yajirobe on the other hand has on an odd yellow and cream outfit instead of his usual wear. Huh.

Goku approaches you, grinning wide. "You ready, Maple?" Before you can reply, a growl from his stomach lets you all know what his mind's set on at the moment. "Ah, after breakfast, first!" he adds, rubbing the back of his neck, everyone laughing a little.

>A. Let's try not to use up any local place's food, right Goku? ...and Yajirobe?
>B. We can probably try to make something
>C. We'll all need our energy today... everyone, food's on me, let's have as much as we can eat!

Blue and Yellow is lightning. Red and Black is fire.

But we're Yellow and Blue, Acer is Red and Black. It's not about what's superior, it's about what's our thing and how Roshi seemingly has no idea what our tastes are.

Like, Krillin seems as though he got more of a say in his outfit's look than we did, and we're Roshi's adopted daughter or something.

Then again, maybe red is the color for female Turtle students, though seeing as this is the first time he's ever made an outfit for a female student,

"Let's make something first, don't want anywhere here to run out of food early." you say with a bit of a laugh, though giving Goku, and Yajirobe, a slightly less than amused look.

"Sounds like a plan." Krillin says with a nod.

After a quick, filling, but not too heavy of a meal, the Ox King brings something up as all of you walk towards the Tournament grounds. "If it's okay with you folks, I'd be able to set up a nice feast after the Tournament. It's the least I can do, especially since I'm sure lots of people here would appreciate not running out of food." Most of you laugh quite a bit at that, though... it's probably a good idea.

All the fighters enter the Preliminary grounds and size up the competition. You notice a few familiar faces, but to your surprise the crowd actually seems lighter than it's been previously. A few powerful fighters seem to be here as well, King Chappa notices your group and gives a little wave, Godzilla and Gamera seem to be here too. And... you can sense Piccolo as well, talking with... wait... Garlic Jr.? The hell is... well that's suspicious. In a corner seems to be a fighter that's not giving off any Ki signa- ...shit.

The trick with opposed rolling is that by itself its just flipping coins regardless of any tactics we use. You need to have modifiers based on the situation and tactics used by both parties.

You take a moment to look at Krillin's outfit again. Hrm... gonna have to think on that some time. Maybe after the Tournament. Well, first thing's first: Piccolo and Garlic Jr. working together? That might be trouble. You walk over, your brother, Chi-chi, Launch, and Goku eyeing the other fighter, Tien walking along with you. "Fancy meeting you all here again." you mention to the little blue Makyan and his cohorts.

Garlic Jr. is taken by surprise for a moment, putting away a Capsule. "You. Leave us be."

"Not causing any more trouble now, are you?" you ask, crossing your arms.

"Please, girl, as if these weaklings could do anything." Piccolo grunts at them. Garlic Jr. glares at him in return. "No one will interfere in my humiliation of you and your little friends."

Tien gives Piccolo a curious look. "...so you intent on following the rules of the Tournament?"

"It will make my victories all the better." the Namekian informs you both with a malicious grin.

You and Tien give Piccolo a respectful bow, then move over to the other... fighter. "You."

"Tuffle girl, you have no idea what you're getting into, do you?" he questions with a glare. Well, that confirms one thing...

You smirk a little. "Your mom need another picture? I can even autograph it this time."

He... doesn't know how to respond to that one. Acer gives you a suspicious look, but can't really keep it, barely holding back his laughter. Goku just seem confused. "Picture?"

"I'll tell you later." you say with a little laugh.

"Ah, hello again, my friends!" a familiar voice addresses your group. Hey, Nam!

He shakes his head no. "As much as I've improved, I am not strong enough to really match you all. However, I have found a better thing to do." He points at his chest, then notices it's obscured a bit, and ruffles his sash out of the way. He's... one of the medics here? "I feel that it would be needed."

"Hah, that's pretty smart. Thanks, Nam." you nod at him, Chi-chi nodding as well.

"Ladies and gentlemen and fighters from around the world!" the Announcer guy's voice echoes. "Thank you all for coming to the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Regretfully, the number of fighters who have entered have decreased substantially since last Tournament. Currently, there are 80 competitors, and only 16 will make it to the finals. We will now draw lots to determine the Preliminaries."

As the fighters start lining up, Chiaotzu approaches you. "Maple, would... you mind if I, um... help things along?"

"No cheating, Chiaotzu... though it'd be best to try and keep others from doing so as well." you tell him, eyeing Garlic Jr. "Keep a watch out."

"Got it." he says with a confident smile.

You all pick your numbers. You're lucky enough to be number... 11. Seems that you're in the first block, first match is against... Godzilla?! The giant reptile notices it at the same time you do, and gives a little roar. Seems he's been waiting for his rematch. You scan along the other fighters there. Also in your block is... your brother. He seems to be fighting Gamera first round. Well, only one of you will be among the top 16 this Tournament. In the other blocks you see Lapis, Lazuli, Chuu Lee, and Sansho, one of Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, are all in one group.

"Good luck, Master!" she tells you happily. That catches the attention of some of the fighters. Seems they were about to write her off as an easy win, but now... heh, well, guess they're not so sure.

"Same to you, Chuu Lee, kick some ass." you respond, giving her a fist bump.

Your match starts soon, Godzilla taking his place opposite of you. "Fighters ready? Begin!"

Why the weird change?

You burst forth, time to see of Godzilla can keep up! You attempt to land a powerful strike to his face... only to see him block you just in time with his tail. You make a grab for it, trying to pick your opponent up and toss him out, only for Godzilla to move his tail out of the way at the last moment and headbutt you. You stagger, but land a hard kick to his gut. The two of you get some distance for a moment, you rubbing your forehead. "You've improved quite a bit."

The large green monster grins excitedly, charging at you. You dodge aside, only for his tail to come at you, trying to thwack you in the face. You're out of the way in time to dodge the brunt of it... but what feels like a burst of Ki follows it, making the attack feel like it connects. You hear Goku let out a surprised noise. Godzilla roars... smugly?

"Okay, that was new." Damn, this thing can hurt. You dash at it quickly, dodging a claw swipe and landing a powerful uppercut to Godzilla's jaw. It staggers back, rubbing it, but still ready to fight. That did less damage than you hoped it did. Better be careful...

I feel its okay to go over 20 if the person with the bonus deserves it. The bonuses don't have to be outrageously high.

Lets take last example

Maple vs Godzilla
1d20 + 2 (+2 PL advantage) vs 1d20 + 3 (+2 Maple is charging, +2 ???)

If Godzilla gets a 18 or higher to break 20 I mean good on him you know? As it stands now he isn't bound by the same rules as us. He can't crit or crit fail. etc.

Okay, better not let your guard down... You take a more defensive stance, ready to throw some Spirit Bits at him. Godzilla... pulls his arms back. His back fins start glowing. Ah shit. You bring out your Spirit Bits, ready to move out of the way. Right as he seems to finish charging a Kamehameha... you notice he's moved. Godzilla... just left a damn Afterimage. For something so big he moves a LOT faster than you remember, stopping right behind you. It's at point blank. You try your hardest to block as both Godzilla's Kamehameha and breath blast head on, your Spirit Bits quickly forming a shield, but not quite in time to stop most of it.

The people watching your match seem amazed by the power Godzilla puts out... but even more so when you're revealed to be mostly fine. You look up at your opponent. That hurt, but it did a lot less damage than he was expecting. "H-heh... not going down that easily." The reptile lets out a surprised grunt, and while he's still in close-range you slam a Phantom Shotgun right in his gut, sending him backwards, your remaining Spirit Bits firing at him. Godzilla tanks your attack fairly well, and seems relatively unscathed by it, but the sheer power of it brings him close to the edge...

Well, the difference between rolling opposing d20s and this system seems to be that Gojira here can only roll 11-19, though he does suffer from 1s.

It could be that this is to make difficult opponents consistently powerful, though it may make calculating chances of player success a bit more difficult.
>>

>C. A good energy attack should end this!
"You can throw out a good Kamehameha, I'll give you that, but mine's better!"

>D. Something else?

Get him to commit to a lengthy energy attack. Then TK dodge it, get up close and blast or smack him out of the ring.
>>
>>42583889
I completely agree. I just think that based on what Maple or what he does should change how he rolls.

For example
Lets say Maple has an advantage due to Godzilla being staggered as he is. He should instead of rolling 1d9+10 roll something like a 1d13+6 making his range 7-19.

That way there is still luck involved like opposing rolls have but our actions actually, you know, influence things.
>>
>>42583959
So, there's a 1/9 chance of him getting a disadvantageous roll, right? What if a stronger opponent got a bonus of 15 and rolled 1d4s? Would they have to roll two ones or three ones to have a disadvantageous roll, to keep it consistent with the 1/9 chance somewhat?

You cup your hands together. Let's see how he handles one of YOUR Kamehamehas. With a quick charge and a blast, you throw just enough energy at him to push him out of bounds. Godzilla... seems to have been waiting for this, and does his same technique against you once again. Except his has enough force to push yours back. Before you can really respond, the two beams hit you at full force, knocking you on your back and pushing you to the edge of the ring. Gods... "Ow. G-guess you're more than ready for something like that..."

A roar comes from your opponent as he rushes you, sweeping his tail along the ground to try and knock you out of bounds. You barely avoid it, but the follow-up of the swing throws you around the ring like a ragdoll. Damn it all, you're getting your ass kicked on the first round... of the prelims, no less...

Been doing the math Kato. Unless you give us the exact type of roll (1d4+16, 1d9+11, etc.) we are going to have a natural disadvantage against everyone regardless of how low you make it. Even 1d18+1 best of 5 gives them a tiny advantage to rolling. With their spread lower its just that much easier to get the higher end of the spectrum.
>>
>>42584226

Another thing to be said about rolled DCs:

While it can be a gameplay representative of opponents slipping up or making mistakes in combat, it could also make players confused on whether they're facing a tough enemy or a weak enemy, or whether they should be conserving their strength or going all-out on an attack.

Like with a static DC or dictated DC, they can look at the roll and go "oh shit, this guy's really good at melee, we should try something else" or "we really need to go all-out here". But with the rolled DCs, it's a bit harder to know if the opponent is going to be tougher or not. It could make players more willing to try weaker attacks due to the possible odds of the enemy screwing up, but that also increases the chance of the player getting wrekt if they roll poorly.

Setting up a static high DC, adjusting for player actions (i.e. melee attacks succeeding have a DC of 19, lowered by using a technique or a power-up) has the same effect as an opponent rolling well, and makes it consistent that they're really tough.

On the other hand, opposing rolls make it so that the opponent can do REALLY well because of chance (farmer with shotgun rolls a 20, Maple rolls an effective 5 or 12 with modifiers), and also may make the players try to play the odds.

>A. Not losing here! KAIO-KEN!
>>
>>42584531
>>42584556
I like it so far, it's made our opponent more of a threat.
>>
>>42584556
I think having a little more mystery as to how strong an opponent is (as in opposed rolls or less obvious DCs) could work well with opponents we haven't fought before. Maybe a shift towards a static DC could work to show that we're picking up on our opponent's technique. Just a thought.

And yeah, I'm really liking that Godzilla is presenting a credible threat because of this. More tense fights are good.
>>
>>42584613
I like it too, but for opponents that aren't Godzilla, maybe make the variable DC lower?
>>
>>42584631
>>42584613

It doesn't really make him more of a threat, it just adds RNG into the mix.

Maybe it's just me, but I really hate having more RNG than what is absolutely necessary. I like rolling dice with modifiers, but having an opponent that can wreck you with RNG just makes me really tired.
>>
>>42584613
But you'll always be at a disadvantage in the luck department regardless of how strong our character is or what we are doing. We can mitigate it perhaps but we'll always be at an disadvantage with this system.

The spread is the same for both parties, you can have them crit or critfail fairly, and add modifiers based on the situation.

Yes rolls can go over 20, but if both parties are getting modifiers its okay, and besides they'd have to roll pretty high unless you are making the modifiers really big for some reason.

You stand up and let your aura flare. "I'm not losing here! KAIO-KEN!" The blazing red of the technique burns around you as you lunge at Godzilla, landing a powerful blow to the monster's jaw. Oh, he felt that one all right. You follow through with a kick to the side, sending Godzilla flying, then clasp your hands together. "That trick is quite something, but I'm not holding back now! DENJIN!" a short charge builds up, sparks flying from your palms. You fling your hands forward, and roar out, "KAMEHAMEHA!"

The beam strikes true, and launches Godzilla out of the ring... and through a wall. "Maple Mahogany advances!"

You sigh with relief, the Kaio-ken passing, and fly over to Godzilla. A quick heal to his, admitted relatively minor, injuries, and you help him up. "Damn, that was a close one. Nice work."

The monster dusts himself off and gives a satisfied roar. You move on back into the Preliminary area, Nam hurrying over to heal you up as well. Seems most of your friends have advanced... save three. Lazuli's beaten her brother in battle, Krillin seems to have admitted defeat against Piccolo, and Chiaotzu wasn't able to defeat Magil. Damn. You head over and try to cheer them up anyway, though they seem to be taking their losses relatively well. Next round you're against... your brother. Acer stares at you with a confident smirk, finishing his own match in near-record time. "It's you or me, sis."

You nod at him. "I don't plan on losing just yet, brobro." Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Chuu-Lee in her match against one of Garlic Jr.'s minions. She seems to be having a bit of trouble and... and her opponent's Power Level seems far higher than was. And there's a demonic taint to it as well...

You head over, eyeing your student's opponent suspiciously. He shouldn't be this strong...

"HOLD STILL YOU BRAT!" Sansho roars at Chuu Lee. She dodges out of the way of his attack expertly, catching his arm and throwing him to the ground. He stands and glares at her. "That's it! I've had ENOUGH!" His muscle mass seems to... expand a bit, but not like Master Roshi's technique. And his Power Level jumps quite a bit. It's over 5000 now, and the Demonic taint of his Ki raises even higher.

Your student manages to dodge his next couple strikes, moving into melee range with him. She charges up some of her Wind magic into her fist, and with a mighty yell, shouts at him "SHOTENKEN!" Her fist slams into his jaw, and the wind slams him upwards, slightly dazed as he spins in the air. Chuu Lee takes the moment to chase after, jumping into the air and landing a powerful kick to his gut. She rockets down with him, forcing him out of bounds first.

"Chuu Lee advances!"

As your student skips over to you cheerfully, you notice Magil grunt angrily at the fallen Makyan. "Such a waste..."

It's the weakness of using 1d20 vs. lower dice + modifiers.

On average, a 1d20 will roll 10.5 over a long period of time. 1d10 + 7 will roll 12.5 on average.

Maple's on gambling mode while her opponents get more consistent and higher numbers. The additional dice don't really matter either since they get the same amount of dice to roll.

Well, this is going to be quite risky, and by the Gods if you fail this... no. You won't. Electricity surges through your body. You pop up your Spirit Bits and direct them at your brother. At first he manages to dodge a few hits, but soon one strikes true. Next up... "RAIO-KEN!"

Those words send a shiver down Acer's spine. He tries to counter with a Raio-ken of his own, but the Spirit Bits bombarding him keep stunning him, just long enough for you to start charging. Acer attempts a Will O' Wisp, but your superior speed lets you dodge it effortlessly. You keep moving, not letting him hit you, and wait until you have a full charge. Once set, you move behind your brother, grabbing him by the back of his shirt. He looks back at you, and right as you fire, he lets out a single word: "Crapbaskets."

With your attack fully charged, you punch it at him, striking him in the back and sending him to the floor. It leaves a noticeable dent, taking a chunk out of it. Acer can barely stand as his body's still stunned. You wipe away some sweat, smiling at him. "Don't fight Lightning with Fire, brobro."

You walk over to your brother, ready to simply kick him out of bounds. However, he has one last trick up his sleeve. He pushes himself out of the way telekinetically, and manages to get the stun out of his system just in time to try his Flame Kamehameha. However, you've already predicted that, and surprise him with an afterimage, appearing behind him and kicking him to the floor.

"Out of bounds! Maple Mahogany will be in the finals!"

Your brother groans a little as he tries to stand. "D-damn..."

You float down, crossing your arms. "Well, you burned my new outfit and made me fight topless. Your fault, brobro."

"Nice match, Maple!" Goku comments walking over and patting you on the should-oh gods he's seeing you topless!

You try not to panic and oh gods oh gods oh gods please no! Your face goes red and you dash off, hastily Clothes Beaming an outfit back onto you. Something, anything, gods please... You take a moment to calm yourself. Okay, deep breath. You step back out, facing a very confused Goku, bemused Krillin, and amused Acer. The monkey boy tilts his head at you. "Guess you like that outfit, huh? But... aren't those the colors Krillin has?"

"Didn't like the red, Maple?" your bald friend questions. Acer just keeps snickering at you.

You sigh and quickly Clothes Beam the colors back. Bah, stupid, distracting embarrassment... "Sorry about that, Goku. How were your Prelims?"

"Fought against King Chappa! He's gotten really strong, but I was able to win. He's looking forward to seeing us fight again." he replies. You notice him walking out with a smile on his face, but he stops when he sees you're done with your match as well.

"Ah, so the Champion will be in the Finals. I'd expect nothing less." Chappa tells you. "I'm going to check on my students and how they're doing for it. You might see them in the Finals as well."

"Wait, really?" Acer asks.

King Chappa laughs, "Well, not quite as you'd think."

Chuu Lee actually seems to recall something. "Oh... you mean, like what me, Lapis, and Lazuli did?"

The man nods. "Indeed. I look forward to seeing you do well, young one. You seem quite impressive, though you have a great teacher."

You head over to check on the other matches. Seems most are done, now. Only Piccolo and Magil seem to be left, fighting a some sort of bear man and... wait a second, is that... Upa?!

Magil tosses him into the air, catches him, and throws him to the ground. Upa's father is watching, fists clenched. Magil seems like he's been doing this for a while, but stops when he sees your group all together. He kicks the badly injured Upa off the arena, Nam rushing over to heal him. "He's lucky I have to play by the rules."

You glare, and after making sure Upa heals up all right, grunt at him, "Thanks for at least playing by them, hard as it may be for you." You then ignore the next thing he tries to say to you and walk over to Piccolo. His opponent is out cold, but surprisingly less injured than Upa was. Kinda. "You're fairing well."

"That noseless bald friend of yours was the only real challenge I've had so far. Not that I expected much out of these worthless humans." the Namekian grunts at you.

"9! 10! The Unbearable is knocked out, Majunior advances!"

...he. He really... what is he, 8? ...no, technically he's like, 3. Still, ugh. "Majunior."

"What?" he asks in... almost an offended tone. Oh gods he thinks that's clever. Piccolo, kid, wow... "If you have something to say, say it."

"That concludes the Preliminary rounds! The 16 fighters in the finals will be: Maple Mahogany, Son Goku, Majunior, Magil, Tien, Ginger, Garlic, Chuu Lee, Chi-chi, Launch, Giran, Tao Pai Pai, Yajirobe, Pamput, Shen Hiro, and Sky Dragon! All Finalists, please step forward!"

You look at Piccolo and nod. You walk forward with your friends, into the new waiting area for the Tournament. The Announcer guy greets you all happily. "All right ladies and gentlemen, congratulations on making it to the finals! We'll be drawing for the matchups shortly, so while you all wait, please, enjoy some of the food we've prepared!"
