On my phone at work so I can't do a proper OP without taking two hours edition

-

You rise to your feet and give your father a smirk. Just like him to put you on the spot. He smiles a you for a moment, like he can tell what you're thinking, before he resumes addressing the room.

"Kotijah is my daughter. This little lady killed Lamiring. I mean, I softened him up, don't get me wrong. But she took up my sword and cut him in half. She's braved the wilds, she knows the threats we face as well as any of us do, and she's every bit as wily as her father. I'm also proud of her to no end for beating my brother."

At that there's a quiet murmur of amusement and shock among the older members of the order.

"So I choose Kotijah to replace me as leader. She isn't yet perfect, but she has the qualities it takes to lead this bastion of good against the wickedness festering in our kingdom."

There are a few cheers, until Letoc rises to his feet.

"I challenge Kotijah to trial by combat for the leadership of the Order of Fire."

He looks you in the eye.

"To the death, unless that's too frightful for you."

It is such a good thing we trained with swords as much as we did.
>>

Well, if we had trained any other abillities as much, they would have worked just as well you know.
Someone could have posted the same thing about spirit, or brawling or something.
Wait... How are we on the magic front? Still full?
>>
Remind me, who is Letoc? It's late here and I don't trust myself to read the archive right.
>>
>>42605603
Some dude we just met in the last thread for all of 2 seconds.
>>
>>42605603

Guy who was serving as interim commander of the Order while dad was AWOL. Apparently he got pretty attached to the position.
>>
Should we spare or behead him?
>>
>>42605676

If he fights well and loses gracefully then I see no reason to execute him.
>>
>>42605676
Presuming we win, spare him, offer that 'second in command' job (which to be fair is pretty much 'You can make all the decisions that don't involve me cracking skulls.')
>>

Lamiring's little stunt in his duel would work well here.

>>42605711

>>

This anon is so, so right. The truly wise learn from their adversaries.
>>
>>42605732
We're not the dickish kinda dragon-leader, anon. By all examples, for Kot to really want to off someone, they have to be actively trying to kill us in a malicious manner. This dude's at least being formal about it and challenging for what COULD be argued as a legitimate reason (concerns of nepotism).
>>
>>42605797
As an example, I'm almost positive that if Millie weren't there, we would've just fillet'd Uncle and been done with him.
>>
>>42605797
That's true... It's just that we haven't really had much chance to kill our enemies, most of them we either spare because of others around or because they're stupid instead of evil.
>>
>>42605863

>we haven't really had much chance to kill our enemies

Call me pussy, but I consider that a good thing, mostly.
>>
>>42605166
>Fine but I'm cutting this crap from our charter or whatever after, we can vote or something to get rid of a leader next time.
>>42605618
>>42605620
Thanks, I feel better about forgetting him now.
>>
>>42605910
I've got no problem with you feeling that way, but i just feel like i've seen enough quests/anime/manga where they always somehow manages to befriend their enemy after they've defeated them and made them "se the error of their ways" etc. I don't mean that we're supposed to kbe evil, but if someone's trying to off us, then we've got every right to take them out permanently too.
>>
>>42606022

Not the anon you're responding to but I felt compelled to weigh in anyway. I completely understand where you're coming from. Honestly I think we should have just had our uncle drawn and quartered in a public square. But we don't know anything about this guy's motivations - he might be seeing the handing down of his life's work from his former friend to his unproven daughter, and wants to fight tooth and nail for a cause greater than the value he places on his own life.

Which, unless we are going the full-on edgy evil dragon overlord route, does not warrant execution.

Just my two cents.
>>
>>42606022
I don't even see it as befriending. I just don't want to kill a dude that could be a valuable asset. Like I said, if someone's just a complete shitbag, sure, he can take a dirt nap. This guy doesn't hit that level for me yet, though.

Now if we spare him and, say, he tries to Starscream us? THEN he's getting put on the all-iron diet real quick.
>>
>>42606070
>>42606073
I completely understand your point and i agree, we don't have to kill this guy, he's just upset. I'm just saying these things now in hope that some people agree with not beating everyone through the power of friendship in the future.
>>
>>42606147

Well we DID just leave our traitorous uncle crippled and burned in the city. And we made off with his daughteru. Didn't strike me as a case of cliche /tg/ diplomancy, but hey, I might have been reading it wrong.
>>
>>42606147
I honestly don't think we've even come close to that so far. The only people we've out and out fought, we basically had them at swordtip, and either murked 'em or told them to fuck off and don't try it again, or else that's their ass.
>>
>>42605933
Adding
>Why do you want to the death? Are numbers are low enough and I don't want to lose you.
>>
Yeah, i'm probably worried over nothing. It's jsut that i've seen it happen too much lately i guess.
>>
"Fine. Let's do this."

You mother clears her throat.

"No fighting at breakfast table. Take it outside."

Lecot rises to his feet and heads for the exit, trading glances with your father, who does not look happy. Your father looks at you and shakes his head, but you follow anyway. You won't be seen as a coward day one.

Lecot leads you to an open field and stretches a bit. He's every bit the wiry old man he seems, but he looks quite confident.

"There are two rules. I will stop only when you relent or die. The other rule is that there are no other rules."

He slams his staff against the ground, a wall of stone boxing you in with him, forming an arena. Stairs appear around the edge, and your friends and family slowly file in.

"I'll let you go first."

You sing loudly and clearly, forming a lance of fire that flies at him and pierces clean through him. He coughs and sputters, and there's a few cheers from the crowd. Your father isn't looking at you though. You follow his gaze and spot Lecot behind you, walking slowly.

"Odd weather, isn't it. It's so humid. Causes all sorts of visual distortions, especially with the heat. Mirages, they're called."

You brace yourself for impact, ready for his spell.

You weren't ready for his spell.

An upwards swing of his staff sends a bolt of energy into the air, and your eyes follow it instinctively. You hear rather than see him slam his staff down, sending a slab of stone flying at you. It hits you in the chest and knocks you back a few steps, but you managed to avoid the more serious damage.

"Come at me with everything you have. I won't leave this spot."
>>
So, still attacking?
>>
>>42615198
Do you know what happens when an immovable object and and unstoppable force meet?

They surrender
>>
>>42615278
Yep.
>>
>>42615314
I like this. We might as well try flying. I vote for that, unless someone else thinks of something better.
>>
>>42615278
Feint and take out his feet, don't hit him directly.
>>
>>42615198

>Roll eyes

>Run up to him like you're going to attack, swing sword in an upwards diagonal motion to fling as much dust as possible in his eyes, see how he behaves.

It's bullshit, we know it's bullshit, he knows its bullshit. So we're gonna test what KIND of bullshit it is and then react accordingly.
>>
>>42615328
This is me
>>42615345
Do this
>>
You grip your sword tightly.

"Suit yourself..."

You let out a frenzied yell and charge, sprinting forwards before striking the ground hard and knocking up dust and dirt at him. There's a shimmer as it bounces off an invisible barrier, and he quirks an eyebrow as the bubble pops, readying his staff again.

"Interesting... How did you see that one?"

His staff glows, but he makes no move to strike.

>Write-in
>>
>>42615515
Huh.

Well, uh.

Sing, I guess? Through the ground?
>>
>>42615515
Spirit sight up now. Feint an attack from one way, then sweep the leg from the opposite side.
>>
>>42615560
This, but see if we can't manuever behind him before sweeping the leg. He might outthink himself and presume we're just gonna stop at 'oh, get behind and stab.'
>>
>>42615555
Oh, lol, thought the barrier stayed, my bad. Anyway, up to you guys, I'm out of ideas.
>>
>>42615658
Don't worry, I've got a couple. Whether they're good or bad remains to be seen.

Oh, >>42615604 is me, just adding- if it wasn't obvious:

Don't fucking touch the staff if possible.
>>
>>42615690
Fancy maneuver then? Feinting and tumbling and sweeping and such.
>>
>>42615843
Actually, I'm rethinking things. Gimme a minute (presuming I'm the only one thinking tactics and odds, if anyone else has any ideas, I'm all ears)
>>
>>42615880
How about we flip over him with our wings and then sweep?
>>
>>42615843

I'm fine with it. We've been trying basic stuff over and over again and it's been like smashing our head against a wall.
>>
>>42616009
I was thinking about that, yeah. Jump OVER him. Honestly, I'm trying to think of a way to get in melee range is all, really. Part of me just wants to say

>Charge him
>Stop right in front of him for about a half second.
>Grab his wrist with the staff, squeeze and break it. His wrist, I mean.
>>
>>42616012
His whole game is 'mage bullshit'. He wants to keep us at a distance unless he's about to bait us. We want to close the gap so we can pulp him. It might give us better modifiers, but I'm not comfortable using the sword in close range. He's expecting that fighting style, it seems like. That's why I want to just get in close and get our mitts on him.
>>
>>42616086
Yes, let's make physical contact with the mage with contact spells. That's definitely better than using a sword.
>>
>>42616086
I was even contemplating

>Throw the sword when closing in in a way that impacts the staff and sets off whatever the fuck he's doing
>We can then move and retaliate while said attack is going off.
>>
>>42616086
HE has pain and wound transference touch based spells. His hole shtick is misdirection.
>>
>>42616108
>>42616144

He's got more than contact spells, and they don't go off instantaneously. Now I'm overthinking the situation. Honestly, at this point, what I'm most leaning towards is simply:

>Plant sword in the ground.
>Lean on it.
>"If you're not gonna do shit, neither am I. Are you REALLY this angry about the situation? Is this REALLY REALLY that important to you?"
>>
>>42616173

Trying to hack him to death hasn't been working, so we just taunt him out of position?

I mean, I doubt it'll work but fuck it, why not? At least it doesn't have the potential to backfire all too horribly.
>>
>>42615843
Yes, go with that, ignore the indecisive idiot who keeps making successively worse plans.
>>
>>42616211
Like I admitted, I'm overthinking the situation, probably.

But at this point I don't even want to fight the big baby anymore. It's lost its luster.
>>
Told you they'd surrender. Never doubt Superman's wisdom.
>>
>>42616173
Let's go with this.

Then, when he gets close and agrees to not fight, we put our blade to his throat and tell him to 'mirage that, motherfucker'

Or something.
>>
It's 1 AM so I'm gonna crash while you guys debate this.
>>
>>42616262
Anyone up for my misdirection ploy? Anyone? We don't actually have to wait until he agrees not to fight, just have to get close enough to stabby stab when we need to.
>>
>>42616366
If he's not thinking the same thing, maybe.
>>
>>42616366
It doesn't make any sense, and it relies on him suddenly becoming completely retarded and forgetting his own abilities.

So no.
>>
>>42616412
Any better ideas besides diplomancing? I'm open to them. We could try singing and burning him from the inside out, or making his staff heat up to where he drops it, I guess.
>>
>>42616305
I just want you to know that this is simultaneously the worst character and the worst fight scene in the quest so far.
>>
>>42616475
He had no introduction, so that may be part of it. We don't even know this old fuck.

Seems to be able to do some overpowered shit, too.
>>
>>42616524
Overpowered for our level, anyway. That's why I'm just like 'let the baby have his bottle'. Not like a lot of people are going to just straight up follow him, anyway.
>>
>>42616557
That's the same reason why I want to hit him until he takes us seriously, and then keep hitting him until he dies.
>>
>>42616557
Yeah. From this perspective it does seem a bit trivial. I vote for some kind of demeaning surrender or something. Something to show that this entire thing is bullshit.

Misdirection my ass.
>>
>>42616646
That might fail the test of character bullshit he's probably pulling, even if it is in the most incompetent and annoying way possible.
>>
>>42616671
Then we don't need his approval anyway. I say we hop up with our wings next to Dad, tell him this guy is an ass, and then fly off to work off some steam.

I use fly in a relative sense. We can basically just hop with style right now.
>>
So I think most of us are in agreement with the general 'action' being 'This is stupid and wasteful and petty, fuck this, you wanna be called big dick chief so bad? Alright.'
>>
>>42616768
I'm for that, yes.
>>
>>42616768
I'd rather not because this is also a test of wills. We'd be a fairly shit leader giving in so easily in tough times.
>>
>>42616868
This is a poorly-modeled test, if so.
>>
>>42616768
I'd rather not and hope that BTQM actually goes somewhere with this instead of having us plink away at him and do nothing for seven more combat rounds.
>>
>>42616868
It's not a matter of 'giving in in tough times' it's 'Dude wants to be a whiny baby and his temper tantrum is wasting time, energy, and resources (because we're both gonna need to heal ourselves and his mana's probably a bit depleted) so we're just stopping the shit fit.'
>>
>>42616646
We are a half dragon. And we surrender to that old chump? I know it is dull and annoying, but we cant backtrack. Seriously when was the last time Kot surrendered?
>>
1 more vote for keep at it.
>>
>>42619351
It's not like we gonna go on our knees begging for our life. We're basically just saying this is so asinine that it's not worth the effort put in.
>>
>>42621521
Which looks like we're quitting like a brat because something is tough.
>>
>>42621628
I can see that, but I still think it's the more prudent option overall.
>>
>>42621708
The most prudent option doesn't mean the most IC. If that were the case Kot would have not gone after the duke.
>>
>>42621780
I'd call this IC for Kot. She doesn't have a strong reason to kill this joker sand he's just wasting time and effort. I could see her saying 'this is stupid and meaningless. Forget this.' And walking away.
>>
>>42621806
Except she's never backed down from a fight, ever. Oh look a zombie we can avoid, kill it. We're not allowed in the church, sneak in anyways. My home is compromised, break things til I find my friends. Uncle is trying to kill me, get a better position and kick his ass despite the fact he's a general and this is his home. The Duke is stabbing my dad and surpasses me in power by a fair bit, stab the fucker until he stops moving. Taret is beating me in the spar, keep going anyways. She's never stopped, the only reason it's being considered is because the player's are frustrated we're not sweeping him easily.
>>
>>42621895
All of those situations were either perceived as low-threat or something we just couldn't run away from. I won't deny that a part of it is simply yeah, we're not sweeping him, but I genuinely am just kind tired of this guy. It feels like neither side is doing anything, we don't know him, it's not for any good reason, he's just butthurt. But whatever.

Just so long as we don't die from this stupidity.
>>
>>42622063
Keep in mind Dad did choose us, so it's pride and his name on the line. If the guy beats us it's fine, if we win but he keeps the to the death bit, it's fine. Just giving up now is pussying out and a slap in our parents faces.
>>
>>42622193
Eh. I disagree, but I don't care enough anymore to argue.
>>
So, what are we doing? The fancy feint trip thing? That's probably gonna take like 3 rolls. With our luck it won't end well.
>>

You take a moment to consider his stance, and decide that trying to knock him over is your best plan. You run at him, preparing a swing to distract him so you can knock him down, and you can see him turning his staff over in his hands as though waiting. You take your swing, up and to the left, and he bends his body backwards to avoid it, using the staff as a counterweight. You dip your body down and turn, catching his leg and knocking it out from under him. He bends further back as he falls, propping himself up with his free hand for a moment before it slips, and he falls onto his back with a grunt, staff tumbling away. The glow on his staff fades away and he just sits there, looking up at the sky.

“Hmm. A nice choice. Well, I'm disarmed and at your mercy. Good match. It's to the death, so you can go ahead and kill me.”

He sits up a little bit and bows his head like a criminal at an execution block. Your father looks on with interest. This guy has given you the runaround this entire time, wasting your time and energy on this charade, and you barely even know him. He's kept the order running for nearly two decades now, and the first thing he does when a new leader is appointed is challenge her to a death match. You know this is a test. You know this is probably yet another trick as part of that test. You just have no idea what he's testing you for.

You walk next to him and line up your strike, taking a moment to check with your sight that he's not up to something. He's loaded with magic, just like usual, but there doesn't seem to be an active spell on him right now. You adjust your grip on your sword so you can turn it mid strike and hit him with the blunt part.

“This is for wasting my time with your stupid test.”

You swing hard and feel something sharp and jagged inside your head, twisting deep and causing your muscles to lock up a bit, but you shake it off and push through it. You won't let whatever spell he's casting on you deter you from finishing this. Your sword connects, and you send the head of the water copy splashing across the ground, before the body falls over and dissolves. Lecot is leaning against the wall of the arena, clapping slowly and smiling.

“Observant, but you need lessons on the finer points. Merciful, in your own way, which is a plus. Resistant to mental magics, a definite positive. And you've clearly got some leadership talent since you have your own merry band.”

His wounds fade away, as do yours, and the arena slowly vanishes. Your father is standing there looking exasperated.

“Lecot, you could have just asked.”

He nods slightly.

“And she could have simply learned. But those lessons take time to learn any other way. Plus this was more fun for me. Now I know what she's capable of and what to work on with her, and she knows that I'm a jackass who has survived the last two decades by being a jackass, and that if she decides to learn anything from me then she better be prepared to have those lessons presented in unusual ways.”

He turns and starts walking back towards the cave, whistling. Despite all of it, the duke hurting your dad, your uncle being a manipulative jerk, you have never felt quite so frustrated with someone before. Your father approaches you with a small smile.

This.

The benevolent dragon-queen route is becoming less and less appealing with every new person we meet. Let's go unlock our final form, help our close friends ascend to a demigod-esque position, and light everything else on fire.

“I'm getting tired of this, father. Everyone that I've met since coming to the capitol has given me the smoke and mirrors treatment, always trying to delude me, coerce me or trick me. If it happens again then I'd rather it burned to the ground.”

Your father pauses and looks grim for a moment.

“When I left I would have said otherwise. Even when the other members of the order were executed on those false charges, I would have said otherwise. But I think you might be right. It's a den of deception and trickery in there. Lecot is kind of an ass, but he didn't actually hurt or hinder you except for wasting your time, but he would have taken that long asking you questions anyway. But the city... The city is rotten to the core. The fact that Lamiring managed to get to the ball without being detected as an undead raises some serious concerns... I hope you won't hold too big of a grudge against Lecot, he does mean well, in his own way. I have to do some thinking...”

He turns and starts to walk away, and your friends head over to you. Gil, Kat, Sena, Millie and Taret. There's no sign of Cenere though, but you can feel the necklace throb with warmth, so he's at least listening closely.

“The plan is to get to the manor and salvage what we can. Millie and Taret, you two will stay here to help the order with whatever they're up to. Kat, Sena and Gil? You're with me. Millie, if you'd be so kind as to drop us off once we're ready?”

Millie salutes dramatically and grins.

“Ready when you are, boss!”

Didn't we get a major wound when we got hit with a slab of rock?

Because if so, he totally hurt us.

Ask if Millie will be willing to testify against Tirio, also ask Cenerre's if the necklace can work as a makeshift comm link.

It was never about leadership, that entire sequence including the nomination was a fake to test us.

I feel like this song describes her pretty aptly.

You head for the cave, checking to make sure everyone is following you.

“Let's grab our gear and get moving.”

You head in and grab a few supplies from the closet, including a shovel, an ax and a scabbard for your sword so you don't need to keep it in your gloves all the time. Gil grabs his bow and quiver, which now has a divider in it, and two different colors of fletching on his arrows. Sena grabs a pair of long knives, as well as a few shorter ones, and fills a pack with a few books, grabbing her staff as well. Kat just pulls on her jacket, which clinks and clatters with the various bottles and containers inside it. You take a moment to contact Cenere.

“We're heading for the vault. You can hear me, right?”

The necklace throbs.

“Alright, so long as we can talk.”

You can hear his voice in your head.

“Verbal communication takes more effort on my end, but I can manage it so long as I'm not distracted. Presently I'm working on powering up a few old devices belonging to the order so they're usable again. I should be done in a few hours, unless you have other orders.”

That's pretty much exactly what you wanted him to do anyway, and you let him know that.

“Excellent. I'll update you on my progress then.”

You turn to your merry band and adjust your clothes a bit.

“Alright, folks. Ready?”

Gil, Kat and Sena nod, and Millie salutes again. Taret just sits there at the table, smiling a bit.

“Then let's get moving.”

You stick your hand out, and Millie takes it, and the other three take hold as well. You hear Taret say “Good luck” before the world turns into a blur and you zap away to the manor.

The manor is in exactly the state you thought it would be. It's a charred ruin. Most of it is still standing, but the whole building is a burnt out husk. You hand Gil the shovel and walk around with the ax, not even really sure what you're looking for.

You manage to find a couple of interesting things. A shard of ice with an inner flame, the stairs leading to the basement of the manor, and signs that someone has been here since it was burned down.

You decide to investigate the shard and have your friends investigate the footprints. The flame inside the shard is a lot smaller than you remember it being, and the shard itself is a bit smaller as well. It's damp, as though the ice is melting away. It probably needs some magical energy or the construct will just fall apart completely. You could try to infuse it with some, you suppose. But then you might have to deal with an irritated construct again. Gil walks over to you as you weigh your options.

“There are a couple of sets of footprints. I think some are from when the order came to get you from the ruins, but the rest are a little all over the place. A few of them seem to lead to a set of stairs leading down, but there aren't as many sets leading back out again.”
