It’d been days, you think, maybe even weeks. Time incalculable, spent running from the furious braying of beasts. You’ve been sprinting barefoot across the muddy, rain-soaked ground of the woods, ignoring countless cuts, scrapes, and bruises earned along your way. And every time you break for respite, lungs aflame, you can hear them. Wet snarls, padded footfalls. Whenever you turn around, a dozen pairs of red, glowing eyes peer out at you from the shadows, from between the wet fronds of the ferns and low-hanging trees. Sometimes you even slept, only to be chased in your dreams by the same beasts who followed you now. In the dark sky above, a flash of lightning illuminates a small, cramped path through the forest’s lush undergrowth, and you follow it, spurred on well past the limits of human endurance by the ever-tightening clutch of fear, like claws sunk into your chest. You push through the thorny vegetation and emerge from the tunnel-like path into a clearing. And in that clearing, there stands a cave. Hesitant, you enter. Something seems off about the place, even if you have certain death breathing down your neck, out there in the woods. You step into the cave, into that pool of inky blackness in front of you, and grope around blindly, trying desperately to get your bearings. You navigate along one wall, both hands outstretched, feeling for the damp rock to guide yourself along. Then, without warning, the step forward you take places your foot not upon the stable purchase of rock, but into nothingness, and you fall, screaming. You splash down into a pool of frigid water, your shocked silence giving way to coughs and sputters as you bring your head up for air and try to purge some of the water you swallowed. You open your eyes, only just now realizing that they had been closed, and you can see. (cont)
>>42607448All along the walls of this strange cavern, a bioluminescent lichen grows, pulsating a soft blue hue. You look around, and can see that you are treading water in a small but deep pool. Ahead of you the pool gives way to wet dirt, then firm rock. It leads to a series of three hallways. And, much to your discomfort, you see three chiseled faces above the respective hallways. Grotesque images, violent and vivid, each lit by the calm blue light of the cave lichen. >Take the left hallway – and walk beneath the haunting visage of a man with two gory pits where his eyes used to be. Around him dance stone lightning bolts, like the one you saw overhead which led you to this strange place. His mouth seems to be frozen forever in the act of speaking some word.>Take the middle hallway – and walk beneath the helmed head of a man smiling broadly, with a grin made entirely of sharpened teeth dripping drops of stony blood. Around him, there is a scene of battle, absolute carnage with corpses littered everywhere. You hear something emanating from the middle hallway...a shout, or the echo of one. Perhaps a battle cry?>Take the right hallway – and walk beneath the hauntingly beautiful face of a woman grinning slightly, allowing to protrude a long, forked tongue, like that of a serpent. Around her dance a panorama of chains and hunched figures bowing in some perverse mockery of prayer to the higher powers. Two gems, set as the woman’s eyes, glint softly as they catch the light from the cave lichen.
Welcome, friends. It has become glaringly obvious lately that we have had an influx of extremely white-knight quests. While I don't have an opposition to this sort of thing at all, I think some semblance of balance must be preserved.Enter Villain Quest. Rolls are all 1d20, unless otherwise specified. MC is male.Everything else is up to you.

>>42607858So right hallway clinches it?Seems like a martial choice.
>>42607925Whoops, was thinking middle.Diplomancer god then, maybe.
Then I want to change my vote from right to middle.
>>42607959Screw that let's be a cleric to a goddess of oppression
>>42607983Delete your old vote, then. Otherwise people will assume you're just fucking with everyone.
>>42608008I'm on my phone. I can't figure out how to. But I'll try real fast.
>>42608000That would be neato. But I was just going off the "ensnaring tongue" vibe. Goddess could have multiple aspects.
Yeah. I deleted my earlier vote and want to go more direct combat now.
Just want to reiterate that there is absolutely nothing stopping you from becoming the strongest warrior in all of history just because you took the path of the snake-tongued goddess. Or a dastardly wizard. You choose what you train and why. If you can justify it to your patron, then they're not going to have a problem with it.I.E. I'm going to go get swole and amazing with a sword so I can ride around the country slaying worthy challengers in single combat and amassing a loyal following of admirers would be just fine.

Alright, since votes are being deleted and stuff I guess we should probably just do a final destination.1 - middle hallway, martial bent, STRENGTH2 - right hallway, diplomacy bent, CHARISMAVoting will close in ten minutes.Sorry for the confusion, guys. I just want you to be happy with your selection. Try not to feel pigeonholed, this is just the first of many choices you will face.
>>42608192You should probably stick to 10 minute voting windows in general. First to three has some issues.
>>42608137Right, but choosing a starter will always be contentious, MadGod.
>>42608192I voted right, but if we're going to be a Villain we should be strong. Who needs Charaisma when you're the strongest?>1 - middle hallway, martial bent, STRENGTH

>>42608207We can do this, then. Thank you in advance for your patient understanding, this is my first quest.>>42608211I walked right into that one.

>>42608386Yup, not worried personally.Just remember that 1d20 (or any single die) has a wide spectrum of results with an even probability distribution, so jigger your numbers with the expectation of high and low rolls.
>>42608338This isn't "his thing", this is just mistakes as a result of him being a newbie QM. The d20 thing isn't automatically shit, which is why I didn't mention it, but the rest is not good.First to three is absolutely terrible once you have more than 6 players and even if you have less it still discourages any writeins.I'll admit that FD votes were never that good for the stated purpose of discouraging samefagging, but there's no point in calling it FD and formatting it as such if you're not going to actually run it as one.
>>42608558I meant let him make his own mistakes and learn from them. And it is certainly his thing. Nobody but him is running this quest.

>>42608627He's not being irritable, he's presenting his opinion and attempting to provide backing evidence for it.Always eagerly awaiting criticism. This is a learning experience for me, but I want it to be an entertaining experience for the lot of you.

Taking a deep breath in, you try to settle your nerves, and begin to stride down the middle hallway. Every step you take is heavy with trepidation, and as you walk down the hallway the easy blue light given off by the lichen is gradually replaced with a bright, harsh red, emanating from somewhere further down the hallway. The eerie red light casts a shine like that of freshly spilled blood across the walls, and that’s when you notice what the walls themselves are made of.Steel. Misshapen blades, sickles, axes, all forged together like some unholy abomination of the martial tradition. As you walk, the blades begin to grow more gruesome – some stained a sickening rusty brown color, the hue of blood dried generations ago. Some of the larger weapons are adorned with skulls, ears so old they could be fossilized, all the trinkets and fetishes garnered by career soldiers who have long since become numb to the once shocking sensation of taking a life. Even the air reeks with the coppery scent of spilled blood. And, you realize with no small degree of unease, you’re beginning to feel more alive than you’ve ever been. You feel good. Taking in your surroundings once more, you decide that this is definitely no place for a person to feel good about being in.The hallway, soon becoming cramped with the debris of a thousand haphazardly forged together weapons, opens up into a large, high-ceilinged chamber. The room, despite the horrifying appearance of the hallway that led you to it, is surprisingly spartan. It is lined on all sides by weapon racks and suits of armor long fallen into disrepair, and rust has claimed most of the metal within. In the center of the chamber, however, stands a display which demands your utmost attention.(cont)
>>42608790You recognize the face mounted atop the massive statue. It overlooked the hallway you walked to reach this place. All around the giant stone statue, however, are scores of bodies chiseled into one long, single sweep of carved rock. And all of them, down to a man, are horrifically mutilated, some still frozen in perpetuity with a look of shock upon their faces, or a death rattle groaned out from between chapped, stony lips.In front of the statue, there sits an altar. It, too, seems plain and unadorned, until you realize that the rock it is carved from is somewhat different than the rock that makes up the rest of the chamber. It is a deep, unnatural shade of red, run through with striking white veins.>Pray at the altar>See if any of the weapons or armor is in a usable state>Nope the fuck out of here>Write-in (always feel free to write in options)

Tearing your attention somewhat reluctantly from the massive, grotesque statue in the center of the chamber, you begin to dig around amongst the piles of rusted plate and broken blades in search of something useful. After earning a few cuts from some careless handling of the (surprisingly) still sharp blades, you finally find something that hasn’t been ravaged so severely by the winds of time as to border on uselessness. Two boiled leather gloves with laced fittings, and a curious ring on the index finger of each glove. Without hesitation, you pull them off of the longsword they were hanging from, and slip each on. They’re comfortable, even somewhat padded in the interior. It seems like a design best suited for a pit fighter or someone of similar ilk – looks like they could really take the pain out of delivering a blow to an enemy. Curious, you fiddle with the ring on your left-hand mitt, and realize that it can be turned. You do so, and in a flash, your entire left hand, all the way up to your elbow, is covered in black plate armor, scaled and inlaid with runic designs for effect. On the bottom side of your forearm a series of brutal, hooked spikes protrude from the thick plate, sharp enough to rend flesh with ease. A quick inspection informs you that the right-hand mitt operates in a similar fashion. You admire your new gauntlets for a moment before a booming sound echoes about in the chamber, shocking you from your feet and causing you to fall backwards onto your ass. Laughter, you realize. Deep, throaty laughter. And though the statue remains motionless in the center of the room, you know exactly where the sound came from.(cont)
>>42609384“Another petty grave-robber. This is not what I was promised, Dark One! I thirst, I thirst always and receive naught but these meager sacrifices. Your chains will not hold me here forever, Most Damnable!”After a moment, the echoes bouncing around the room subside, until they are no louder than the faint scrape of stone on stone, or the whisper of steel on steel. And it takes you longer than it should have, but you realize those echoes are not the voice of the statue at all. It is the sound of the various arms and armor around you taking shape, and marching on your position.>Fight defensively. The plate gauntlets are thick enough to deflect most attacks, you can make a slow retreat back out the hallway while covering your escape. Low DC>Fight offensively. If you can defeat the constructs as they rise, you will never be outnumbered or overwhelmed. Medium DC>Focus inwardly. Still seated, you do the only thing you know how to do. You freeze. You close your eyes. You take a deep breath, and try to come to terms with your life, and its imminent end. You realize, with no small degree of dissatisfaction, that it hardly could have been called a life to begin with. Wet, cold, always running, fleeing from the teeth and claws of a savage world. Hell, you were never a man. You were prey. A grim resolve floods over you with a force so strong, so ever-present that it knocks your eyes wide open and spurs you to your feet. You’ve never lived. You’ve never been alive. Until now, that is. Even if it lasts all of thirty bloody seconds and ends with you as nothing more than a broken, gore-splattered heap on the floor of this godsforsaken tomb, you will live now. The red in the room no longer seems symbolic. In fact, it’s not even a part of the room anymore. It’s part of you. Clouding your vision, heating your blood. You feel your pulse throbbing in the back of your skull, and you realize for the first time that you are no longer frightened. You are furious, absolutely livid at the pathetic, shambling empty suits of armor making their way towards you at a snails’ pace. You let loose a savage roar, and sprint forward to the nearest suit of armor. You slam into the animated plate, the spiked forearms of your gauntlets leading in your assault. In a flurry of swift, slashing blows you rend two plated arms from the torso of the living armor, and then deliver a savage punch to its helm. The plate crunches and crumples inwards, and the soldier slumps to the ground, armor separating into its constituent pieces. The clatter of the plate as it clinks harmlessly against the stone floor gives rise to a hearty laugh within you, and you turn, a savage gleam in your eye.(cont)
>>42609828Let's focus on power first, to protect and then assert ourselves.Once we find out what kind of world we live in, we can start to work out what we want to do. We shouldn't be planning just yet...arms>power>influence>benevolent dictator>spur renaissance>space program>galactic conquest>build a giant space gun to shoot our god>eat his essence>become new god
>>42610004You furiously swing closed fists and deliver savage elbows to the animated suits of armor surrounding you from all sides, knocking the clumsy steel soldiers into one another and bringing a deafening cacophony of screeching metal into the chamber. You feel your mind take a step back from yourself, and your body seems to spur itself further without instruction, operating on an instinct baser than any you knew you had before. You’re practically unconscious by the time the last suit of animated armor comes clattering down to the floor of the cavern. Or, you hope you were. You have no idea why you would charge straight at the laughing statue if you had your wits about you.You scream, and throw yourself bodily at the statue. You want to wipe that smug, toothy grin off his face. You want to forcibly remove his head from his body and use it as your personal latrine. You want – Before you connect with the statue, you are tossed back with a force so strong the impact of your back against the floor knocks the wind from your lungs. You gasp, trying to force air back into your chest, your body protesting painfully. Again, you hear a bellowing laughter echo throughout the room.“Ahahaha! Oh, Great Devourer, has the time really come at last?”You shake the stars from your vision, and finally manage to calm your breathing. The fresh air stings your chest as you inhale, and you feel your entire body tingling with an energy you thought you lacked before now. “Come, mortal. Sit on my altar. I would confer with you in my true form.”>Sure, why not?>Hells no.>Is that the best challenge you can muster for me? I’d request you come and pray to me, weakling. Not the other way around.>Write-in

>>42609828Entirely up to you guys. I'm not anticipating having to write a bunch of savage rape scenes (/tg/ is usually a little too kindhearted for that sort of barbarism). But then going full Paladin from this point forward seems equally ridiculous.I'll leave the specifics of evil up to you guys, and just focus on making whatever you want to do fit the narrative.
>>42610030>Sure, why not?
>>42609828Crush and conquer, but honestly, if they can't fight back, there's little value or glory in butchering people who could be growing crops and tending livestock to fuel our war machine.
Looks like we're standing, not sitting, on the altar, then.
Without a word, you walk forward to the altar, and stand before it. A long silence hangs in the air before the statue speaks once more.“I instructed you to sit, mortal.”You weigh your words for a moment, debating how to respond.“I’ve been on my feet my whole life. I’ll stand.”Again, the booming sound of laughter permeates the chamber, and you swear, just for a moment, that the statue’s smile grows even wider. “Very well, foolish human. You may stand. But either way, I will need something from you.”“And that is?” you ask.“A taste...” the statue leaves the thought incomplete, and the red permeates your vision once more. Your pulse quickens, and pounds in the base of your skull like a hammer on stone.“My blood?”“Yessss...”With your gauntlets still up, you drag the back of one forearm against the meat of your opposite bicep, the sharp claws digging into the flesh with ease, and bringing forth rivulets of blood. The thick, red liquid fills the room with a heady scent – much more pungent than it ought to be, and you would know. You bled all over half that blasted forest on your way here. Oddly enough, that already seems like it was years ago.(cont)
>>42610645The blood runs down your arm, pooling at the cupped palm you made with the black plated gauntlet. Without ceremony, you turn your hand over and allow the blood to splash over the white-veined, deep red rock of the altar. Almost immediately, the wound you made on your arm starts to spout thick black smoke, the rent flesh charring and stinking like a campfire. You cough as the smoke enters your nostrils, and you begin to feel dizzy.Resting one hand to your head, you try to find your balance, and fail miserably. You sink to your knees, trying to keep focus on the stone and steel chamber you’re in, but it all seems to fade into your periphery, evading any attempt you make to stay latched on to the reality of it all. With a start, you realize you are no longer in the chamber. You’re outside again. In the distant horizon a blood red sun is beginning to set, or rise, you’re not sure which. How is one supposed to keep accurate track of time within a cavern? Or...whatever this place is. All around you the land is scarred by battle, pockmarked with piles of bones and fresher corpses still. Weapons dropped to wounds or the simple fury of battle lay around you on all sides. And, seated upon a dais rising high above the battlefield, sits a massive man. The statue, made flesh, perched atop a throne of desiccated corpses, interwoven with one another, each man’s face the perfect picture of terror, and formed into an elegant chair.“You have fire in you, mortal. I grant you that. But look upon me, and gaze upon your god. I could crush you beneath my heel, mortal. Have no doubt of that. But right now, I need you. I need you as much as you need me.”Several soldiers, looking emaciated and sickly, emerge from behind the Corpse Throne carrying three large, heavy wooden boxes on their shoulders. They deposit the boxes in front of you, and then keel over, motionless.(cont)
>>42610674“Gifts, mortal. Mere trinkets to me. But where I’m sending you, they will be of the utmost import...”You open the boxes, and peer inside. “If you truly need me, then why must I limit myself to one? I could carry out your will much more effectively if I was fully armed, my lord.”“You presume to judge the worth of my gifts, mortal? Fool. Do not mistake my eagerness for weakness. You live and die at my beck, mortal. You have not the strength to bargain with me.”A hot wind blows from the direction of the Throne, bringing with it the smell of decay, bloated bodies swelling in the heat of a setting sun. The gust grows, buffeting you with a savage heat, and the smell of death gives way to that of scorched hair. Your hair, you realize.“How does one bargain with death incarnate, mortal? How could one as lowly as you strike a deal with such as me?”In truth, you’re not exactly sure.Roll 1d20. Sanity check. You guys done fucked up.But I'm proud of you for trying.

For a moment, you consider the idea of forfeiting the day to your new patron, slinking off to lick your wounds armed with no more than a pair of retractable gauntlets. Then, you remember who, exactly, you’re speaking to. God of Violence. Avatar of Death. Grand Warmaker. Not some shadowy servant of Fear. You stand, the pain of the ever-heating wind growing more and more unbearable. And with dried eyes ringed red with irritation, you stare into his face, refusing the urge to blink. The words seem to tumble out of your mouth, sounding more like the rambling of a madman than the courageous, fearless speech you anticipated. Well, you can’t have it all.“One day I will slaughter you. Like cattle.”The buffeting wind ceases, as suddenly as it came on. Tears stream from your swollen eyes, your body trying desperately to soothe the burn. Your ears ring once more with the sound of laughter.Your god is no longer perched haughtily atop his Corpse Throne. He stands before you, twelve feet tall and covered in layer upon layer of ropy, scar-touched muscle. He dwarfs you considerably, you being not much more than an underfed animal when you wandered into the cave. To your surprise, he picks up the sword, and hands it to you. Letters take shape on the flat of the blade, beginning near the tip and ending at the hilt, burned into the steel with white heat. “You remind me of someone I once knew, mortal. You are an arrogant, haughty prick of a man. I like that. Take this sword. So long as it drinks the blood of your foes you will never fall in battle. And this,” he gestures to the cooling letters, “Is something else you may find use of.”(cont)
>>42612262“What is it?” you ask.“A name. My name. And your name, too.”The name reads Adramalech. >This seems like a good place to end the thread. Hope I was able to spice up the entire char-gen process a little bit for you anons. I’ll stick around for another hour or so for a Q&A session, as well as to listen to your criticisms and comments. I want to know how to improve the quest, and I hope you guys will share your suggestions with me. The story will begin in earnest Monday at 4pm PST. I should be able to run for a solid eight hours.

>>426126043d6 or 3d10 maybe. Three dice seems to give a good range of rolls.

>>42612604People roll 1d1002 out of the first 3 rolls need to pass
>>42612892>>42612726I think maybe what I'll do is hold a vote of the beginning of the thread on Monday, to choose between these two suggestions. I'm not opposed to either one.
And someone beat me to the archive. You snarky bastard. We shall see.
>>42612924http://anydice.com/Try this and compare the results between the two to your own taste. We don't know what situations we'll be rolling in but you do, so it's best you pick something where you know the average and the distribution.Personally, I started using 3d6 because I saw it used elsewhere (banished quest) and it seemed to work well. Most rolls fall somewhere between 8 and 13 and most of my DCs fall into that range. Higher than 13 you see very few successes, so 14 and 15 represent the outer limits of what's possible without modifiers (you have maybe a 13-14% chance of rolling a 14 or higher).3d10 will require more finesse than that (as the results run from 3 to 30) and make small modifiers less effective. It's a flatter curve, so you'd have to have a really good idea of what your DCs should be for a given situation but it's very doable.Because it's your first quest, I recommend 3d6 or 3d8 if you plan on having a combat system with room for upward growth.
