Kasai has gone into surgery. Alice has gathered the finest group of doctors she could find to perform the operation, but you're still somewhat nervous.

You'd hoped that some meditation would allow you to calm yourself until she comes out of surgery, but, of course, that's been interrupted.

Koenma, in his older form, stands before you, clearing his throat as he looks down at you. His arms are crossed, but his expression is patient.

"Do you have a minute?" he asks politely.

"Yes," you tell him, rising to your feet.

Koenma uncrosses his arms, looking to the side and lowering his head just a bit. "I've been told that Alice's people have nearly finished constructing bodies for Bruce's parents. From what I hear, they've done a remarkable job, and their faces even look similar to how they did before."

You get the feeling he isn't here with good news, despite his supposed praise of the work Alice and her people have done.

"I've been working with my people in Spirit World, trying to figure out if we can get Bruce's parents into these new bodies," he explains. "The conclusion we've reached...well, it's not a particularly good one."

He raises his head and looks at you. "We can put the spirits into the bodies, but I'm afraid it won't work as we'd hoped. You see, these new bodies may be similar to the old ones, but they still aren't the bodies the Spirits inhabited. They lack the necessary connection and shared wavelength. Bruce's parents entering the bodies would amount to nothing more than a possession, one they could only continue as long as the bodies hold together. And, without spirits properly inhabiting them, the bodies will deteriorate rather quickly."

Koenma arches an eyebrow, and you think he's actually considering your offer. But, he ultimately sighs and shakes his head.

"John, the dead are usually supposed to stay that way," Koenma tells you. "Reviving Bruce's parents was a long shot from the beginning. I can let them enter the new bodies temporarily so they can say goodbye to their son, but, after that, just let them rest."

Koenma nods, giving you the peace sign as he leaves. You return to meditating, calming yourself down and keeping your energy in check. But, you soon hear another voice in your head.

Everything goes dark, and you feel incredibly cold as you are transported to Koe's throne room. You look up to see Koe in his throne, and to your left to see Aalgan, looking at you with a neutral expression.

"I appreciate you coming so quickly," Koe tells you, shooting a glare as Aalgan begins snickering.

Koe gestures to your teammate. "I sent Aalgan to investigate some of the abandoned outposts of our enemy. For the most part, he found little of note, but in his most recent excursion, he came across some information that could change things considerably."

"It seems King Enma has been helping our enemies," Aalgan tells you, producing a worn looking book. "According to this journal, Kuraidesu's army has been supplied with fresh recruits, courtesy of King Enma himself. Some of Enma's top men have been delivering demons apprehended by Spirit World to some of the outposts."

>>

"Can I see the journal?" you ask.

Aalgan hands it to you, and you begin flipping through pages. You stop at one that catches your eye.

"King Enma's men brought us two more recruits today. Their names are Gouki, and Rando. Apparently Rando was an expert human hunter who killed ninety-nine psychics before a Spirit Detective managed to bring him down. The other guy just seems like a brute, but given the strength of his kind, he might end up earning his keep. Enma's men warned us that things aren't going so well at the Dark Tournament. Ronove's attempt to manipulate the demon hunter failed, and the Demon Hunter's team are advancing quickly. Those Spirit World idiots actually seem to think Lord Belial won't be able to stop this guy. In any case, we'll be ready to attack the local town in a few days if all goes well. Disanto's sent us a few hundred cultivated humans. Between them and our demon soldiers, the humans won't even put up a fight."

You turn the pages, finding another entry.

"We're evacuating the outpost. We just heard that Belial's been killed, along with Johnson. Lilith and Vepar escaped, but his majesty wants us to abandon the outposts for now so the army can regroup and develop a new strategy. Our allies in Spirit World are going to provide us with portals out of this world. I can't believe this has happened."

The rest of the pages are blank.

"Do you think Koenma and Kara are in on this?" you ask.

"If Enma's in charge of this, I'm sure Junior's involved somehow," Aalgan tells you. "But I doubt Kara would knowingly help a demon army."

"Truthfully, I don't know if Lord Koenma or Kara are involved," Koe tells you. "I'm not even entirely convinced that these writings are genuine. But, it would explain how they were able to abandon their outposts so quickly."

"You want this to be a quiet, in and out sort of thing, or do you want us to just kill everyone there?" Aalgan asks.

You say the word, activating your suit, and Aalgan rushes forward. The demon granny, clearly knowing she's been found out, drops her broom and pulls out a dagger, rushing towards Aalgan. Aalgan's blades extend into swords, and the demon drops and rolls to his side, coming up and stabbing at Aalgan's thigh. Aalgan manages to deflect the stab with his left blade while spinning and decapitating the demon with his right.

The demon's head rolls away, and Aalgan shrinks his blades back into daggers.

"No real point in stealth here," Aalgan tells you. "Odds are that little exchange let them know we're coming. We might as well go in guns blazing and take them all down."

Aalgan rolls his eyes. "Whatever. I'll head around to the back. If you're just going to break in the front door anyway, though, this serves absolutely no purpose."

He circles the house, and you give him a moment to reach the back door before using a Spirit Blast to break through the door.

You hear a demon scream as he's caught in your blast, and step inside to find about a dozen more waiting for you, weapons drawn. Another Sprit Blast takes out a trio of demons who are rushing at you, and a kick to the throat sends another demon crashing through a wall.

You rush forward, ducking beneath arrows fired by another pair of demons. You grab them by the arms and slam them into one another. As they slump to the ground, you catch the wrist of a demon who attempted to stab you from behind. You twist his arm until it breaks, then use him to shield yourself from an axe strike from another. You kill the axe-wielder with a chop to the throat, and finish off the rest with some jets of flame.

Aalgan steps into the room, a bored expression on his face as he surveys the bodies.

"Told you sneaking was pointless," he comments.

You don't say another word to Aalgan, but make your way to a nearby doorway which leads to stars descending into darkness. You flip on the light switch, and start down the stairs, Aalgan following close behind.

Reaching the basement, you find another pair of demons waiting for you, but dispatch them with ease. You and Aalgan take a look around, but find nothing of note.

"This doesn't make sense," Aalgan comments. "Why post men down here if there's nothing to protect? If they were planning to ambush us, they could have done it sooner."

He shakes his head. "I don't get it."

"No? It doesn't seem overly complicated," a voice says from the stairs.

You turn to see a thin, gray-skinned man with a bald head and red lines all over his face step to the basement floor.

"I'll put it in simple terms," he tells Aalgan. "This is a trap."

Aalgan curses to himself, drawing his blades.

The man smirks, drawing two swords. "Yes, I'm afraid there's nothing of value to be found in this little outpost, though it still serves a purpose. It serves as wonderful bait for my prey."

The man raises his blade, putting it between himself and your attack. Your blast becomes smaller, all of it focusing into the blade, and, as you watch, vanishing into it. The blade glows, and the man smiles.

"Is that really all you've got, my boy?" he asks, taking a step towards you.

Aalgan grows his daggers into swords and rushes towards your foe, only to be blasted back by a beam of light from the man's sword. As Aalgan crashes into the wall, the man shakes his head in amusement.

"You have zeal, but you're woefully overconfident and reckless," the man chastises, looking back at you. "Now, if accounts of your behavior are anything to go by, there's little chance of you surrendering. But, it's only fair that I afford you the opportunity. Surrender now, and I'll bring you in alive. You channel Spirit Energy into your right finger, quickly taking aim at your foe's face.

"SPIRIT GUN!" you shout.

A thin, purple beam of light shoots from your finger, surrounded by flames. Your foe quickly brings up his blade, and you watch your blast vanish into it.

"Did you truly not learn your lesson last time?" the man asks, pointing his blade at you and striking you in the chest with a beam of light from his blade.

You're sent flying backwards, narrowly missing Aalgan as you crash into the wall.

"And here I'd hoped you'd provide me with a challenge," the man comments, stepping forward. "But, I suppose that was asking too much. Well, if you can't provide me with good sport, and lack the intelligence to surrender, I suppose I'll just have to dispose of you."

He smiles, stepping even closer. "Ready to die?"

Aalgan tosses a dagger at the man, who casually deflects it. As the dagger nears the ceiling, something in it explodes, creating a hole large enough for the two of you to make it through.

"Hmm, not a bad strategy," the man comments, turning his attention to Aalgan. "But you can't outrun me. I'll hunt you down wherever you go."

You grab Aalgan by the arm and jump. It would have been a simple matter to do it on your own, but Aalgan's added weight makes you nearly fail to jump high enough. You send Sprit Blasts from your feet to get a little extra boost, and land in the living room upstairs.

The two of you begin running for the door as the man leaps up behind you, pointing his blade toward you and firing another blast that catches you in the back, sending you sprawling on the front porch.

Half a dozen demons come running down the stairs, flanking the man, while another four cut you off in front of the porch. You push yourself back to your feet, finding yourself entirely surrounded. Aalgan, down to one dagger, prepares to fight.

You're desperate, so you take desperate measures.

You gather your Spirit Energy, and unleash it in an explosion of purple light. You warn Aalgan to look out, but hear him scream along with the demons as your blast consumes them.

But, your blast quickly vanishes, and you see the man holding his blade towards you. Not only is he unharmed, but the demons that were flanking him also seem to have survived the blast unscathed. The demons on the porch, and Aalgan were not so lucky.

Aalgan is the only one to be hit and survive, but he's not doing so good. He's on the ground, his body burnt badly. Before you can do anything to try and help him, a blast of light hits you in the chest, throwing you backwards off the porch and sending you crashing back to the ground.

The man steps out onto the porch, stomping on Aalgan's hand, forcing him to drop his dagger. The remaining demons move to surround you.

"Now, doesn't this seem familiar?" the man asks. "Surrender, and your friend may be allowed to live."

Aalgan chuckles, then coughs.

"You find something amusing?" the man asks him.

"Just...the fact that you didn't learn your lesson from last time," Aalgan says, turning his head to look at you and giving you a smile.

You see the man's eyes widen, and Aalgan's dagger explodes, throwing the man off of his feet and doing the same to four of the demons surrounding you.

Aalgan's body is scorched beyond recognition, and he isn't moving. His chest isn't even rising or falling.

He's dead.

The man laughs, and you feel yourself growing even more enraged. A purple glow surrounds you, and it quickly turns red. The man continues to chuckle as you rise to your feet, though the other demons take a step back.

Your vision blurs, and you feel a terrible pain in your mouth and forehead. The man stops chuckling, staring at you with interest and caution. He takes a single step back, dropping into a fighting stance and readying his blades.

You rush away from the demons surrounding you, striking at the man who killed Aalgan with all of the fury you can muster. Your first punch is easily avoided, and it takes some quick footwork to keep you from being skewered by a retaliatory stab from your foe. You slam your elbow into his face and he staggers back, but manages to duck beneath the kick you follow up with. He moves behind you and stabs, but you lean aside and catch his arm in your own. You spin, elbowing him in the face and following with a punch that knocks him to the ground. He rolls out of the way as you attempt to stomp on him, and gets back to his feet.

The demons that have survived rush at you, and you quickly dispatch them with a Spirit Blast. You turn back to your foe just in time to get a knee to the jaw, followed by a slash that slices through your armor and cuts down your chest. You narrowly avoid a stab, turning and doing a spin-kick that catches your foe in the face. You take advantage of his disorientation and strike him again with a burning fist, but he quickly recovers, kicking inside your thigh and causing your leg to buckle. He bashes the hilt of one sword into your face, sending you sprawling on your back, and stabs down with the other, missing you by centimeters as you roll out of the way, kicking at his leg and forcing him to fall beside you.

He quickly rolls away as you try to elbow him, and climbs back to his feet. You do the same, and the two of you stand facing each other.

"I do think I've humored you long enough," he tells you, spinning his swords. "It's time for you to join your friend."
