alarms

both inward and outward

there is no doubt as to where the danger is located

will you use this opportunity to gather your thoughts?

or will you rush in head-first like a fool?

as if there was ever any doubt

>"Damn, that's a lot of fire trucks," Theresa says as she watches like four of them zoom past.
>"Really," Mina nods just before plugging her ears.

After the fire trucks have gotten far enough away from us that their stupid sirens are no longer PAINFULLY loud, we lower our hands from our ears and stare down the street in the direction that they're headed in.

"I can see the smoke from here," Mina says, pointing at the faint plume of smoke that's rising into the air.
"Whoa..." I hold my glasses closer to my eyes so that I can get a better view. "Must be some fire."
"And we got that Synapse at the same time as when those trucks zoomed past," Theresa says.
"What," Mina snaps her head towards her. "You don't actually think-"
"I sure as hell hope not, but..."

She has a point, as loath as I am to admit.

"We should probably check it out," I say. "Just in case."

Mina turns to me and gives me the look.

"You can't be serious..." she groans.
"What," I shrug. "Just going to look won't hurt, right?"

I glance at Theresa, who lets out a long sigh in response.

"Yeah alright whatever," she groans. "But the second something it looks like you might even kind of be in danger, I'm dragging us out of there."
"Fine," I nod.

It's not like I'm eager to get into a fight or anything. I'm just curious.

Much to my (and everyone else's) relief, we don't get attacked or accosted or kidnapped or anything of that sort while tracing the route of the firetrucks. The only thing of concern along the way is, well... the burning building that we're running to.

Hey, It can be really tasty if done right. Problem is if you can get a batch that is cooked properly. I have been pressed to the point I had to make my own at home. Not easy I'll tell ya.

There's a steadily-growing crowd of onlookers standing across the street from the site if the fire, a three story apartment building. I start to feel really bad when I consider that some of the people in said crowd are watching their home being reduced to ash... yeah, I don't exactly feel comfortable with the idea of mingling with all those people.

So instead, I wander off to the side of the action, providing myself with a slightly angled view of both the fire and the neighborhood people who are looking on at it. And just after I get myself situated, I find myself joined by Mina and Theresa.

"This is as bad as that fire that was on the news yesterday..." I say as I watch the flames strip away what I assume was once a sturdy, reliable structure.
"Yeah, really," Mina mumbles. "I hope this was just because of bad wiring instead of-"
"Arson?" Theresa asks.
"Mmhmm," she nods, looking as if she didn't want to say the word for fear of making it become the truth.

"This is what the sirens were for," Mina says, "but what about that Synapse?"
"Shit..."

Assuming that the two were connected in some way, it would make sense that the person who triggered it is still around here. And aside from the three of us standing off to the side, the other people here are the firemen over at the burning building and the crowd of spectators. And now I can't control my suspicion.

While doing my best not to give myself away, I glance at the crowd out of the corner of my eye... and spot a suspiciously tall girl. With green hair. And right next to her, I notice a much shorter head of blue hair...

"Ugh..." I slap my forehead and slump over.
"Cecile?" Theresa calls out to me in a concerned tome. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," I reply, "it's just that I -think- I know what caused that Synapse."

With my neck, I motion over to the crowd... and from the look of exasperation on Theresa's face, I can tell that she can tell what I'm getting at.

"I'm going to go over there and see what's going on with them," I say to her.
"Of all the..." Theresa groans.
"Would you mind hiding out for a few minutes in the meantime?" I ask. "Just in case?"

"Uh, sure," Theresa replies with a shrug as I hurry over towards the crowd, navigating through with a thousand "excuse me"s.
"Wha!?" Sensing that someone's entered her Synapse range, Irene's attention is pulled from the fire and she starts to look all around...
"Hey," I say, waving to her just as our eyes meet.

In an instant, the (honestly pretty scary) expression she had becomes a wide smile.

"Cecile?" Irene calls out. "Thank God, I was worried that you were..."
"Hm?" Allison flinches when she hears my name. "Cecile? What the hell are you doing here!?"
"We were walking home and then all those firetrucks and stuff came flying past," I explain, "so we came to see what was going on. What about you?"
"Er," Irene scratches her head nervously, "that's kind of my fault."

Wait, what?

"Er-" Irene holds her hands up, "Not that there's a fire, I mean!" she stammers.
".....oh," I breathe a sigh of relief.
"I kind of came here empty-handed so I needed to wire myself some money," she explains, "and I don't have any ID at the moment so I needed to have it sent to your sister instead."
"Okay?" I shrug.
"So I took her to a convenience store where we could take care of that," Allison says. "I wanted to get done with it before you came home but then we heard these sirens and saw a shit-ton of smoke..."
"Yeah," Irene nods. "I was worried that maybe someone would need help but it looks like the firefighters have things covered."

"Sooo..." Allison looks around. "...it's getting kind of hot around here so how about we head home?"

Irene's here. And she's a Branch Holder. So chances are pretty high hat she's the one who triggered the Synapse that had me on-guard.

"Yeah," Irene shrugs, "Sorry for dragging you over here, Allison."
"It's fine," ALlison shakes her head. "You got me out of the house for a little while and that's always a good thing."

I only even came out here because I was worried that those fires might be because of some other psycho out to get me.... but since the Synapse was Irene, I guess that's not the case.

"Yeah," I nod, "we might as well get out of here."
"Great," Allison sighs, "I can't really say I'm a fan of watching stuff like this anyways."

As we break away from the crowd, I wave Mina over... and pretty much the second I do, Theresa just kind of materializes next to me.

Allison in particular seems to be in a rush to get as far away as she can from that housefire, and I sure as hell don't blame her. And since Theresa was already fast to begin with and I guess Irene's enhanced strength also translates to enhanced speed, I'm the one who ends up trailing behind everyone else on the way back home.

"Consider this payback for missing out on jogging this morning," Theresa says, looking back at me as I struggle to keep up.

As we enter the house, I let my backpack drop by the front door and make a beeline for the living room. My feet hurt and all I want to do at this point is sit down.

"Quit acting like you're exhausted," Theresa says. "The most you were doing was powerwalking and that's a whole lot of nothing."
"Shut up," I grumble while allowing myself to sink further into the plush back cushioning of the couch.

"If you go to that church, won't they call the Tree of Life people to confirm your postings or however they do things?"

Irene's face goes pale.

"......yeah, they would..." she groans while clutching her forehead. "...and they'd call my sister..."
"Thought so," I nod.

Too many Irenes in one place would arouse suspicions.

Irene quest when?

Irene's smiling all cutely like she's looking forward to it but doesn't want to actually say anything outright... and Theresa's just kind of frozen in embarrassment. I guess that means that it's up to me to move things along.

"Since Irene's going to be living here for the foreseeable future," I say, "she's probably going to need some changes of clothes."
"Yyyyeah," Irene nods anxiously. "That's one of the reasons why I needed your sister to help me wire some spending money over here."
"So why don't you go to the mall and pick some stuff out?" I ask. "You have similar taste so Theresa'd probably be able to help find some deals..."
"Huh?" Theresa flinches.
"What do you think?" I ask. "A shopping date is nice and informal and a lot less pressure than sitting in a restaurant somewhere while trying to figure out what to say to each other."
".........that might work..." Theresa mumbles.

"Ooh!" Irene snaps her fingers. "That sounds perfect!"

But her enthusiasm subsides when she sees how awkward Theresa's being.

"...but if you're not interested in doing that then I completely understand," she says with a weak smile.
"N- no," Theresa rapidly shakes her head. "It actually sounds like a really good idea."
"Then what's the problem?" I ask.
"It's just kind of hard for me to get used to, you know, -this-." she replies. "Being set up and everything. Especially by YOU of all people."

That kind of hurts.

The room goes quiet for what seems like forever. I'm not sure what to say, and Irene was already being really shy to start with... and Theresa's just kind of staring off into space. I'm not sure what's going on there.

"Yeah, you have a point," Theresa says, finally breaking the silence. "It's stupid that I'm fine with putting myself in mortal danger but I'm afraid to go out on a blind date."
"Hm?" I adjust my glasses.
"Not you," she shakes her head, "the other me was just saying-"

And then she glances at Irene and freezes.

"N- never mind that," Theresa says, clearing her throat. "Irene, you wanna go to the mall with me?" she asks, looking up at her with an awkward smile.
"It's a date!" Irene replies, every bit as awkwardly.

Oh man this is so cute I could melt.

For the next few minutes, Irene and Theresa work out the details of what exactly Irene needs to buy and where they'll go to get them. And since their conversation seems to be going smoothly, I opt to stay out of it and mind my own business for now.

Well I mean I'm still eavesdropping but there are no interjections on my part.

"Okay..." Theresa says, stretching her legs like she's about to go for a run, "if we leave now then we should have plenty time to check out everything."
"Are you sure you don't want to take a cab?" Irene asks. "I mean, it's not like I can't afford it..." she says, reaching into her pocket and producing a waller that's JAM-PACKED with bills.
"Uh..." she gulps, "...you're probably gonna have a lot of bags so a cab back here might be a good idea but there's still no sense in wasting money on a cab ride there."
"Alright," she shrugs.

Since things are going as planned, I think it's safe for me to step away and let them play out. So while Irene and Theresa continue to talk, I slip out of the room and make my way to the front hallway.

I have to say, I'm honestly really proud of myself right now. I mean, I'm actually happy about something going right for the first time since before that whole mess with that vampire girl. Though thinking about that stupid bitch makes me remember that Charlotte's still in that cocoon and I have no idea what's going on with her and now I'm a little bit depressed again.

Way to go, me...

Call Gabrielle if anything has changed, but we should spend at least one day with the sister.

Also make plans for the Easter Feast. You should do it at Charlotte’s place together with Allison (and her boyfriend).

We really don't spend enough time with her, and she's probably worried about the whole fire thing since CC can't lie to save her life

Also, I really like CC in that style, arch.

I actually got another commission slot from him so I'll probably have another picture from him within the month.
Haven't decided on who it'll be, though.

Allison's upstairs getting Irene's room ready... I kind of want to see how that's going but chances are that she'll drag me into her CLEANING BONANZA and eat up the rest of the day so I think I'll avoid her for now.

...and I -did- tell Gabrielle that I'd spend the night over there today... yeah, I guess now's as good a time as any to go over there and see how they're doing. Gabrielle's cute and sweet and I worry about her being holed up in there with nothing but Shary and a bunch of literal animals for company.

I'm also kind of worried about Shary too, to be honest. Despite being an alternate Branch personality thing, she's every bit as sweet as Gabrielle is and I'm actually starting to-

...anyways, It's surrogate big sister time for me.

Should I call first?

...nah, there's no point. She already knows that I'm coming over today, and the Synapse that results when I get close enough to the hotel ought to be enough warning that I'm on my way. And on the off chance that she's not paying attention when it happens, I'll actually end up surprising her!

And so, I do a quick check on my plants to make sure that everything's alright with them, pack up a change of clothes since I'll be staying overnight, and head out the door.

I'd hoped to be abel to get to the end of the day in this thread since I started it early, but for whatever reasonI just seem to be completely unable to hit my writing stride until the wee hours of the morning.

It was still fun though, and I thank you guys for sticking it out despite the slowness and unpleasntness of the start of the thread.

The next thread will probably be Tuesday night.

Outside the end-of-chapter epilogues, the quest thus far has been pretty strictly "Cecile onry" as far as perspective goes. Though the idea certainly is tempting, I'm not sure if I'd really want to break that.

You'd definitely be able to ask how things went though. That's no issue at all.

And now I sleep. Thanks for playing!

You guys didn't stop to ask Irene if she was riding in the firetruck when it sped past, did you.
One of the firemen probably triggered the synapse.
Whether he's linked to the fires in any way (besides it being his job to put them out), no idea. For all we know, the fireman is just as pissed as we are at the fires being started, and wants to fucking JUSTICE on some motherfucker.
Or maybe the fireman is starting fires because that way he gets to legally break into places and loot stuff.
>>
>>42646313
Our synapse range is a lot larger than that.
