You stand in the burnt out shell of the clearing by the cove. The pirate's ship creaks behind you, and the smell of charcoal and burnt flesh attacks your nose. For the first time in as long as you can remember you feel uncomfortably warm. On top of all that there's a weariness that goes straight to your bones. Honestly, you could just fall down and sleep where you are.

Whatever that blast you fired off was it's drained you utterly in exchange for destroying most of everything in front of you. The only survivor who was standing in the path of the beam is a barbarian and from his heavy breathing he's not in peak condition. His skin is red from either blood or burnt from heat, you can't make it out from here. But you can detect his intent to pick a fight and the glint of his sword, a copy of Nytora's in his hands as he slowly starts into a running charge, roaring at the top of his lungs..

Nytora and Milly are behind you in the water. By the sound of things they're not going to be helping you out quickly.

Then Nytora's sword spins past you to dig point first into the dirt. Waiting for you to step over and grab it if you want. You know you don't have the power to activate its enchantments. Your dagger sits in your hand now just a very sharp bit of metal as your magic has stopped flowing into it.

You stare at the charging idiot and plan.

Nytora's sword is tempting but you realize as you raise a hand to reach out for it that it's currently not benefiting from even Nytora's failing charm. You're not sure hitting it against it's temproal duplicate is a great idea. So instead your claws fall on the bandolier of knives you haven't gotten around to giving Nytora yet. You slip one out and try to line up a shot with them.

Despite your somewhat clumsy throw and poor aim you hit what you were aiming at! The knife thrown punching through the barbarians kneecap and lodging itself into the meat behind it as he raises his sword to protect his face. Which is a good idea because that's what you were aiming for.

The barbarian's roaring charge dies with a strangled noise of pain as he falls down to his no longer working knee. The knife in the joint flickers and reappears in our hand, and you smile in the human fashion. The swordsman points his weapon at you as he hunches over, his other hand clasping the injury.

Now, this sight is intimately familiar to you. A small injured animal scared and baring its teeth at you. Fear in its eyes as it realizes that it can't get away from the predator in front of it, and stuck with the realization that there's no way to fight back.

You smile turns into a wide mouthed grin and your tounge flicks out along your lips. You think you're drooling. Are you drooling? You're probably drooling. The exhaustion you feel takes a firm backseat to the instincts welling up in you.

The smell of cooking human mingles with the smell of fresh blood, and you have to keep a tight rein on yourself. Then his leg twitches and the iguana part of your brain tells you he's trying to get away. Logic is abandoned and you charge him leaping at him leading with mouth open and claws extended.

He makes a desperate thrust at your face but you twist what there is of your tail and you rotate in the air. The sword sliding past your face and over your shoulder. You collide with him like a bird who you just flash bombed crashes into a tree. With the difference that the barbarian is not as tough as a tree, and you survive the crash without injury. You sink your teeth into his shoulder and roll with the fall. You claws tear into him as you come to a stop and when you feel him trying to raise his arm you pin it with one hand and give him a vigorous shake with the spot where you've bit him.

You hold him there for a bit, adjusting your grip with your mouth and hands when it feels like the elasticity of his flesh is wearing out. Where he was having trouble catching his breath before, now he's having trouble breathing at all from the feel of things. Your own breathing is only coming in a deep shuddering rhythm. After a minute of this the exhaustion from earlier is catching up to you again and you start to see spots on the edges of your vision.

The sound of fighting barely manages to make you stir from your slumber. It's dark now, and there's a long line of humans gathered around a fire, their hands tied and Milly standing behind them with her sword. The fighting sounds like it's coming from the ship and you pull yourself away from the cold wet thing you're lying on to look. Ah, Nytora is swinging around the ship on a rope chasing a man in a fantastic hat. Whenever they get near each other their swords ring off each other before one or the other kicks away.

You don't feel any better rested. There's a bloody taste in your mouth.

You drag yourself over to the fire and collapse in front of it, half on purpose. The humans nearest you flinch at the sudden movement, and Milly giggles. You try to shoot a glare at her but you don't have time for things that take effort. Breathing is pretty tiring right now, honestly.

"Hey," you say instead. "What's happening?"

Milly laughs again, and gestures at the tied up humans.

"They were all too scared to move after you took down the big one. The way you sat on top of him just growling made them think that you'd chase them down next."

You don't recall growling at anyone. Probably better not to mention it.

"Nytora suggested we tie them up in case someone wanted to catch them, or if we just wanted to kill them later, but that seems unsporting," Milly continues. "Once we started tying them up they seemed to understand and started tying each other up. They kept trying to talk to me, but I have no idea how to speak their language." She shrugs.

"So I poked them with my sword til they shut up."

"What are they talking about?" you hear one of the sailors ask another in the worst whisper you've ever heard.

"How would I know? Maybe the black one is asking if she can eat us. Just shutup."

"Nytora went to check the ship for anyone hiding and found the man with the weird hat," Milly says indicating the ongoing swordfight.

You make the tremendous effort of rolling over to check on that. Nytora has the man in the fantastic hat is cornered on the mast. He's planted his feet on the wooden surface and is holding himself upright above Nytora with a rope. Nytora is just standing upright on the mast through a combination of clawed feet and tail strength alone.

"So what SHOULD we do with them?" Milly asks.

>Ask Nytora ZzZZzzz...

"We have a new boat. We can get them to help us take it back to town," you suggest to Milly.

"Will they go along with that?"

"If we promise not to kill them? Maybe." You turn to the humans and switch to their language. The one you speak anyway. You didn't bring any money with you so just the one you can speak right now.

"We're going to put you on the ship and you'll sail us back to town." You tell them.

"HOLY SHIT IT TALKS!" one of the pirates yells.

You stare at him for a moment. You're joined in this by every one of his friends, who look at him like he just grew a second head.

"Kill the one that just talked later," you say, looking at Milly without moving your head. You don't bother to switch back to the language she speaks. You know she's working on her human talk but you don't really care one way or another if she understood your request.

You look at one of the smarter looking humans. You can tell he's smart because he's not injured, which implies he avoided the fighting and the standing in a straight line in front of you.

"Boat to town?" you ask him flatly.

"No problem," he agrees, "I'd rather spend time in prison than get eaten by lizards."

"Eh, you seem okay," you mumble, you're getting tired again. Or more tired. You never really stopped. "I won't eat you."

"Uh, thanks?" he says, confused.

You just close your eyes and enjoy the fire. The arythmic sound of swordplay carrying you off to sleep. Your last registered sound is a human scream and the sound of something hitting a wooden something quite hard.

You grumble back to wakefulness and the world is light again. Maybe you overslept a bit. Wait crap you were supposed to meet Milly's Mom and get the bucket back.

But most importantly someone has dumped you in the sun, and hasn't even properly oriented you toward it. Struggling to your feet you point into the sun, which is surprisingly high in the sky, then flop down again. Then you bother looking around.

You appear to be on a boat. Probably the boat you liberated from pirates. You could ask one of the pirates wandering around carrying shit but you honestly don't care that much. Also, Milly is like right there and wearing a very nice hat. Judging by the bloodstains you're going to assume that's the hat that used to belong to the guy Nytora fought. The feather appears to have gone missing though, and the colors are much different than they appeared at night. From what you managed to glean from the lady at the clothing store the dyes used in making the hat would be ridiculously expensive. Milly wears it well.

"Oh, you're awake again," Milly says, noticing your appraisal of her headwear.

"Hey."

"We're almost done loading the stuff you ordered from the trade people," she tells you. "Then we're planning to sail the ship back to the spot where we met. With a quick stop to see Mom." She kicks a bag of what you assume to be nuts.

"We're leaving now?"

"The man on the pier says we have to either leave or pay to stay parked here."

"Ah," you say intelligently. Then after a moment you remember something and add, "How do you know that? You don't speak the language."

"I'm working on it," Milly huffs defensively, "And besides I found a translator." She waves a hand in the direction you were originally pointed.

You scoot your head in that direction and come face to face with a giant.

"Hello."

No wait, it's just a very small person standing very close. You let out a puff of breath and she's blown back by it.

"Personal space," you grumble.

The tiny person, green haired and with weird eyes stands up straightening their cape. Or wings. Could go either way.

"Hello!" she says undaunted by your greeting, "My name is Gelsey Feela. Wandering merchant."

"Sunniva something something," you mumble, then yawn. The sun is nice today. Not as invigorating as usual, but nice. Making a note to work out a proper way to introduce yourself later, you lay back in the warm. You could just... Zzz...

With a heroic effort that no doubt will be recounted in song you manage to pull yourself from the temptation of sleep. You're moderately concerned about the continued existence of pirates on your boat. You need to get around to naming this thing. It probably already has a name but it's yours now so you should get to name it.

You direct your question to Milly and she shrugs helplessly.

"They're apparently new around here. No one has put up any money for their capture, and Gelsey says you can't just arrest someone because they say they're a thing without having ever done anything to prove it."

"Right, y'see-"

"That seems dumb," you interrupt the... Lizard brain what is she? I got nothing. You're going to call her a tiny person for now. You interrupt her.

Milly shrugs.

"So we're just going to keep them aboard?"

"At least until we find someone else to crew the ship. We can just dump them on the beach when we get there if it bothers you. They can walk back to town along the shore."

"I almost got eaten by giant visible spiders on that shore," you say.

"So?"

You shrug.

"Just making conversation."

Gelsey looks like she's about to talk again but you're not ready to deal with new things yet.

"Do we have any food?" you ask Milly?

"Uh, what kind of food?"

"Meat."

"Not that I'm aware of?"

"Do you know the name of an animal in human talk?" you ask.

"Yeah," she says happily.

"Can you buy a me sized amount of that animal and bring it back please?"

Milly looks confused "When you say 'me sized' does that mean an amount you would normally eat or an amount equal to you?"

"Right now there is no difference," you tell her. Then, as if to back you up, your stomach growls loud enough to be heard on the opposite side of the ship. You know this because a man on the opposite side of the ship flinched.

Milly nods and heads for the board that goes to the dock. You turn your attention back to the tiny person, Gelsey.

"Oh, are you done ignoring me?" she asks, her arms crossed.

"Yes," you say. You're glad she caught on quickly. "Did you need paid? I don't know where my money bag went."

"Huh? Oh, no," she shakes her head. "I wanted to talk to you about something else. I heard from some adventurers that you went by the guild looking for work the other day."

"Found some even," you tell her, then you yawn and think about it, "Actually got someone else to do it though. I've been busy."

"Uh, right," she says. She seems to be having a hard time keeping pace with you. Which is silly because you're not really going anyplace. "I was actually hoping I could hire you for a job. Maybe three jobs."

You don't say anything, and she continues.

"So, the swamp is full of stuff that's pretty valuable. I want to get a group of workers and merchants together to go in and grab stuff, and then leave. Hopefully alive."

"That last part IS kind of tricky." You nod.

"That's where you come in. I figure if we have a local guide, who may not be averse to inflicting on violence on other locals, then our chances of getting the stuff and getting gone go way up!" she says, buzzing into the air with excitement.

Buglike wings. You haven't had any real problems with bugs besides the normal biting stinging and giant visible trapdoor spider kind. Come to think of it you're only slightly more fond of bugs than you are of birds. You'll reserve judgement of the... the...

"What are you?" you ask.

"Huh? I'm a fairy. We don't get out much, but I was sure everyone had at least heard of us."

"Right, okay. So the thing with workers and merchants is now?"

"No, no. I'd still have to convince people to come. I figured it's best to have a selling point like 'local guide' before trying to get anyone to go," she explains. "It'll be a week or more before I have everything together.

"So you want to go in and gather... stuff?"

"Yes," she says nodding.

"Like, lizard people's stuff?" you ask. Then you look around for your stuff and find it nearby. Except the bandolier. Did Nytora already take it? A question for Milly.

"Uh, no. Like some of the hard woods, some free growing spices, rare herbs. Maybe some animal and mineral stuff too, if we find anything worth taking?"

"And you'll get permission to do this?"

"You don't really need permission to go out to the swamp, you just do it. Unless you meant from your people's side of things. Do we need permission."

You shrug. You don't think anyone will really care what a bunch of non-lizards do in the swamp as long as they're not messing with anyone else's stuff.

"Probably not."

"Great! So you'll do it?"

"After I fix my sister, turn in the bucket, get rid of this pirate crew, and no longer feel this incredible hunger I'm filled with. Then I probably won't have anything better to do." One of the pirates walking near you flinches and you realize you switched to plainspeech at some point.

"I won't necessarily use one to solve the other," you tell him.

"That doesn't make it sound like the option is off the table," Gelsey says, then she winces, "Word choice."

"It wasn't intended to?" you reply, making your confusion evident. They're jerks. That firmly puts them on the potential food supply list. Granted you haven't eaten anyone in memory but you're sure it'll come up eventually. Wait, did you eat that barbarian guy? You can't remember.

"So, I'll just... check back with you next time you're in town?" she asks.

"That would work. Where are you staying?"

"Uh, I travel a bit but the adventurers usually know where to find me. Or you can look for Dennis. He's a big orc. He carries my stuff."

You nod.

You agree and the fairy erupts off the deck of the ship in a surge of sparkles that make you want to reconsider doing this. You bask for a while and Milly finally gets back with Nytora in tow wearing her new set of throwing knives. Maybe you should get some of those for yourself.

She's also leading a horse.

You're not sure you're that hungry.

The come aboard and Nytora returns your wallet and your new sword, which has a shiny new scabbard now. Awesome. She seems really tired, though not as tired as you. You still can't get your scales to change color and you're not sure you're glowing AT ALL.

As soon as they're aboard the pirates pull up the plank going to the dock and start getting the ship ready to sail.

"Why ares you coming?" you ask Nytora. She fixes you with a sleepy gaze then yawns. Then you yawn. Then you both yawn and then nod at each other.

"Gonna gets off when we get the bucket and take it back. Wizards says they won't have anything for me to do 'til late anyway."

Crap, you hadn't even thought of that. Glad Nytora is on top of this. A few minutes later the ship is out to sea and hugging the coastline. You stop paying attention, sitting next to Nytora and basking while she snoozes. Then you're snoozing.

You wake up to the sound of screaming men and the feel of saltwater spraying on your body. Massive tentacles have slipped out of the water and are reaching over the side of the deck to grab at anything that isn't tied down. Masts aren't tied down, but things are tied TO them. This was a thing you learned before you fell asleep.

Now's as good a time as any for that horse. The screams of the dying animal join the chorus of screaming pirates and you start ripping pieces off the animal to gnaw on while you clean it. The stuff you won't eat getting tossed overboard.

THe sound of something creaky belowdecks can be heard as the monster bleow scrapes against the hull. You watch Milly walk boldly to the side of the ship and start yelling at the tentacles.

"Hey!" she yells, "Those are my pirates! Put them down!"

The tentacles flail in confusion.

"Of course it's me," Milly calls, "Who else could it be?"

The tentacles twitch apologetically.

"That's fine, just put them down. They're mine."

One of the men screams as a tentacle squeezes him.

"No! Not just a little. Give them back!"

The tentacle tosses the screaming back to the deck and he lets out a piained cry as he bounces along it.

"Did you get Sunny's bucket?" Milly asks the tentacles, which have decided to just sit idly on the railing now. A single tentacle rises out of the water, a bucket grasped in its tip, and drops it on the deck too. For some reason it's got a rock crammed into the lid so you can't see what's inside. You'll trust Milly's Mom knows what she's doing.

You rip a leg off and start poking Nytora with it. She groans and tries to push it away but you just prod harder until she finally snaps and bites down on the offending limb, her claws tearing at the flesh before she's fully awake. She looks a bit surprised at the taste of horse. You're just glad you didn't try that with your arm, and you continue eating.
[1/3?]
>>
>>42690599

Milly drags the massive sacks of nuts you had bought for her Mom to the edge of the deck and the tentacles collect them greedily. Your band of dangerous cutthroats huddle on the opposite side of the deck from the tentacles and whimper in a huddle. You hear Milly explaining how you got the ship and phase out the distraction as you gnaw on horse. Nytora has taken the leg you poked her with and is watching alongside you. You'd complain but you can't eat an entire horse on your own anyway. You make sure to rip off the head and neck and set it aside for Milly, though you do surreptitiously claw open the back of the skull and scrape out the brain meat.

Below, Milly finishes her story, the tentacles disappearing over the side, and the pirates seem to have gotten over the most of their fear. You feel a prodding on your shoulder and turn to find a tentacle poking you. It makes a familiar gesture and you sigh and tear off one of the horses remaining legs for it. Then a second tentacle you missed slides off with the rest of the horse, leaving you holding the leg.

"HEY!" you shout as the rest of your meal is dragged into the depths.

Milly just puts her face in her hands, embarassed. Nytora just laughs around her own leg of horse. You offer Milly the horse head and and she sits down to dig in alongside you. Th pirates don't seem to know what to do with this scene and seetle on another huddle, this one involving more quiet whispers. They better not be planning a mutiny. You really don't feel up to murder today. Just ripping bits of horse off is exhausting at this point.

Once the horse is safely tucked away, Milly barely ate half of the head so you and Nytora split the rest, you bid Nytora goodbye and lower her off the ship. You wait until you see her safely on shore and moving before you set sail again. There's a bit of a wait while Nytora murders another of those spiders. At least it didn't catch her off guard this time.and she puts it down quickly.

Full of horse and sitting in the sun you decide to sleep again.

You don't wake up until the ship is put up on the beach and Milly wakes you.

"Can you talk to them?" she asks, pointing a thumb over her shoulder at the pirates who appear somewhat afraid of you but have eager to please expressions on their faces.

You blink at her then at the pirates.

"What does you want?" you ask them.

They look around at each other before shoving one of their number forward. It's the man from last night you decided wasn't completely stupid.

"Uh, if the Captain would allow it, we'd like to keep serving on the ship, if that's at all possible. We're prepared to swear our unwavering loyalty after she saved us from that monster."

Wait, you thought YOU were the Captain of this ship. Though Milly IS wearing the hat of the old Captain, according to Nytora's lunchtime recounting of her swordbattle. You're not even sure you're going to keep the ship.

Nevertheless you translate their words for Milly. Then she looks at you, shocked.

"What should I do?"

"You shoulds try it," you tell her.

"Really?"

"If you wants to," you shrug. She hangs her head and looks lost.

"If it gets boring you cans always just asks your Mom to sink the ship. No more problem," you suggest.

"But what would I even do with a ship full of humans?" Milly asks, looking desperate.

"Be a pirate? Robs other ships? Gets sunken stuff off the bottom to sell? Sails stuff through dangerous places where you can just goes in the water and ask the locals not to bothers your ship or else, maybe?"

"I don't think I'm strong enough to fight everything in the sea..."

You shrug again, "You'll gets there. And there's safer options until you do."

"I do know where a lot of gold is around here," she says looking around the sea. "But that doesn't sound really fun."

"Wait, what did she say about gold?" the pirate from earlier interrupts. You're not sure why he knows the word "gold" in swampspeech but the interruption is unwelcome. Milly makes this clear by clamping her hand over his mouth and holding him off to the side. Judging by the way he's tearing at her fingers, she's probably applying more force than is necessary. Maybe she doesn't have a good idea how fragile humans are.

"If you tries pirating you can sail all over and sees all kinds of places, though," you say, deciding to carry on where you left off.

"I can do that on my own though."

"But you'll have a boat to put your stuff on and people to make carry it for you."

She looks at the man trapped in her grip with a speculative expression. He's turning pale now. Can he breathe?

"That's a good point. And you're right if I get bored I can just have Mom sink the ship."

You nod.

"Will you come?" she asks suddenly.

You shrug. "Maybe. If I don't have anything else I want to do. I can join you sometimes sure. Sounds fun. Can I sink ships?"

"Not mine," she tells you, "But other people's sure."

"Cool. Maybe you should heads back to town though. You'll needs to speak human languages better if you're going to trades with them. Or pirates them. Whichever."

"And the other races."

Ah. You'd almost forgotten there were other races. Probably because you've mostly seen humans around. Speaking of things being around though, you probably should do something about that circle of curious lizards gathering around the ship.

Or you could help Milly pick a new name for the ship.

You head to the bow of the ship while Milly deals with the getting the cargo into one of the longboats. From this distance you should be able to barely signal your family. You inhale and fill your lungs and your air pouch.

"HEY!" you call. Oh, dizzy. Okay maybe shouldn't have done that. Now you're tired again.

You hear a chorus of "Heys" "Yos" and "Sups" form below you. There's about a half dozen lizards down there looking at the ship. Then after a moment you hear a hey from back in the swamp. A loud one. That sounded like Mom. Now there are birds scattering in the distance. Huh.

Turning your attention back to the lizards below you spot them starting to climb the hull.

"Hey," you yell, "Stop that! No putting claw marks in my friend's hull."

"Why not?" one of them asks.

"The ship has to last a long time. We don't want it to look bad."

"You're keeping it?" another of the other lizards asks, "You can't do that. It landed on the beach. That means everyone can get a piece."

"No, they can't. It's my and my friend's ship."

"We got here first," the other lizards protest.

"You're a liar!" you cry, outraged. "I've been on the ship since it left the town!"

"You can't have a whole ship!" they call back.

"Can to!"

"Can not!"

"Can to!" you yell back. It's a flawless argument. How can anyone say otherwise?

"Can not!"

That bird sympathizing jerk. Well that's fine you'll just have to elucidate your points.

"Can to!"

"Can not!"

Okay now he's just being obstinate. You won't sink to his level. You're going to stick to reasonable informative speech. You try to catch your breath and prepare a response. All this yelling is making you kinda light headed.

"Can to!"

"Can not!"

"Can to!"

Wait are they climbing up the hull again? You JUST told them not to do that.

"Hey Milly!" you call back to the mermaid, who is trying to revive one of the pirates who passed out for reasons unknown, "Get your sword!"

You pull your new sword from its sheathe, your dagger sliding free into your other hand. Standing on the bow you pose for a moment before flinging yourself over the side onto the climbers below you slam into them and bowl a perfect strike, throwing all of the down to the sand below. Then you land the world spins around you dizzily and it takes you an eternity to find your feet again.

The energy you'd got back by sleeping most of the day has fled you and you feel sick and tired again. Shakily you rise to your feet and flourish your weapons at the other lizards.

Two of them pull crude looking swords that are put to shame by yours. The others used the time you spent recovering wisely and are split between pulling up a piece of driftwood or a rock, and just baring tooth and claw at you as they move to surround you. You try to hiss menancingly but end up coughing as it fouls up in your throat.

"C'mon then, I'm going to wreck you all like I wrecked your mommas," you tell them, flourishing your weapons.

"My mom would kick your tail stub in," one of them calls back.

There's a weird twitchy feeling in your eye.

"Your mom couldn't stack a single rock. Your mom walks like a big fat croc." you tell them.

Beside you Milly hits the sand in full pirate regalia. Her face is placid as she slowly slides her sword from it's home. The lizards closest to her flinch back from the look on her face.

"Our Mom could take you and your whole family," the lizard next to the last one who spoke pipes up.

"My Mom is Kasha."

All the lizards stop for a moment, hesitating. They were already aware that only two of them were in your size bracket, the others being normal unranked lizards. Apparently your mom's name will stop just about anything.

"W-well our Mom could still take your Mom in a fight," the lizard says hesitantly.

"Oooooh~? And who is your mother?" a familiar voice whispers from the treeline.

Many meters of purple and gold lizard step out onto the beach and everyone present falls down in fright at the sudden appearance of such a huge predator.

You keep forgetting how big Mom is. You wouldn't think you'd be able to forget something like that but as she stands towering over you, still easily 5 times your size, you feel like you're just not remembering properly that mom is a BIG monster. A big monster who is way to damn sneaky for her size.

The smell of urine reaches your nose and you think someone peed themselves. You're fairly sure it wasn't you, but you're breath is only coming in short gasps now and you can't summon the attention to check.

Your response is odd. She doesn't scare you that much. This is like how you felt last night after your first nap. That little drop couldn't have taken this much out of you could it? Oh hey there are those spots you saw earlier.
