Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you poisoned a bandit camp and set off to Nazir.

It is currently the 19th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You float weightlessly, trapped between wakefulness and sleep. Slowly you become aware of the fact that you're submerged within some sort of fluid. Everything is dark, and quite warm. It's really very pleasant. However as you try to stretch your limbs you come into contact with some sort of fleshy substance. It surrounds you on all sides, entrapping you within this surrogate womb. Slowly you feel along the walls of your prison, searching for any cracks or gaps which you might be able to exploit.

Your fingers find a thin protrusion from the walls of your cell. Feeling along its length you find it's a cord, attached to your abdomen. Trying to pull it out sends pain shooting through your gut, so instead you try prying it off of the wall. You're far weaker than you remember being, but by bracing your feet against the walls of the cell and pulling with all your might you manage to rip the end of the cord off of the wall, ripping a hole in your prison in the process.

The fluid you're suspended in slowly drains from the cell, and with a little bit of work you widen the hole until you're able to slip through. You drop several feet to a metal floor, landing with a crash in a pool of viscous fluid, the same substance you were suspended in only moments ago. Wherever you are it's very dark, the only light streaming in through windows in placed high on the wall opposite a long row of fleshy sacks much like your own.

You're naked and emaciated, your muscles atrophied. It's like you haven't moved a finger in years. Just pushing yourself to your feet leaves you gasping for breath. Only after slipping and falling on your ass half a dozen times do you finally succeed in propping yourself up against the wall. A quick glance to your right reveals an door made of thick steel open to a vast plain of wires and flesh melded together so perfectly it's difficult to tell one from the other. Looking left, all you see is row upon row upon endless row of flesh pods like the one you've only recently escaped.

Your choice is clear. Supporting yourself against the wall of this facility you stumble towards the door, progress unbearably slow. Just as you're about to step past the threshold a voice cries out from behind you, echoing through the dark halls of this strange place.

“Mik!”

You bolt upright, smashing your head into the ceiling of your cramped sleeping compartment in the process. Groaning you let your head slump back into the headrest, using just a touch of water magic to dull the pain now throbbing through your skull.
>Vys Pool: (40/[40])

Mortia is peeking at you from the foot of the sleeping compartment. “We've reached Nazir, we're rolling up to the gates right now. It's two hours past midnight so everything is locked up pretty tight, Darzi says we need you to talk to the guards, get us in to see your brother or father or whoever. She sounds pretty anxious.”

The memory of that dream remains at the forefront of your mind, even as you shake off the last few dregs of sleep. You've never had a dream like that, a dream that felt indistinguishable from reality. Still, you've no time to dwell on it apparently. A Vatis' work is never done.

Sliding out of the sleeping alcove you sink into the plush upholstery of the carriage, Mortia slides out of the way to make room for you. The carriage is already slowing to a halt, and you think you can hear men shouting outside. Something about a curfew, you think.

>You're a Grandmaster Vatis, are they really going to refuse you entry? Pull on your robes and tell them to open the gates.
>Make yourself presentable and try to smooth talk your way in, tell them you're just traders.
>Fuck these guys, your family literally owns this town. Namedrop.

You reach into your cloak, pulling out your grandmaster's robes. They've been folded neatly, and you think they might have been cleaned as well. They smell like... well, it's hard to describe. Like citrus mixed with the sort of sharp stench that follows a lightning strike. You shake them out a bit before pulling them on.

By the time you get your robes on and everything properly layered the carriage has rolled to a stop. It sounds like the guards are having a heated conversation with Darzi, though it's muffled by the walls of the carriage. Smoothing your robes one last time you throw the carriage door open and descend the steps. The conversation between Darzi and the guards is cut off almost immediately.

The guards in question are dressed in the style of your family's elite guard. They wear a plate cuirass over chainmail reinforced in places by metal scales. The guards in question are rather richly dressed. What sets your family guard apart from most others is their elaborately patterned silk coats, each with your family's regalia of a broken chain above a crown embroidered on the back.

There are two guards, and you fix each of them with a cold glare before speaking. “Who rules here in the Emir's stead?”

The guards share a glance, before the one nearest you answers. “Sheikh Zaahir, his eldest son. He arrived only days ago with his wife to assume control of the garrison here. Who's asking?”

You smile wide, your tone as sweet as honey. “Grandmaster Mikhael, of the house Abdul-Hakim.” The guards stand up a little straighter. You think the one standing on the opposite side of the carriage, near Darzi, might actually recognize you. He certainly looks vaguely familiar. “I've come to tour my family's most recent acquisitions and alert my brother of a threat to the east.”

The one nearest you doesn't seem quite convinced. “Do you have any proof-”

>>
>>42690664

He's cut off by his companion. “Shut it, Hasim! Look at the man, closely. You're telling me you don't recognize Sheikh Mikhael?” Turning away from his companion the guard addresses you. “We're terribly sorry, sir. We'll get the gates open right away!”

You hold up a hand, begging pause. “Hold on, hold on. His question is fair. I'll provide proof if he wants.” The guard nearest you, Hasim, is already starting to look worried. He fidgets uncomfortably in place, apparently unsure of what to say. Reaching into your cloak you extract your dagger, your mundane dagger, and place your hand against the side of the carriage.

Placing the tip of the knife against the flesh of your index finger, you push the blade forward. Your finger comes off cleanly, knife thudding softly against the wood. You don't feel a thing, nor do you bleed, but just for effect you hold your hand up so the guard can get a good look as it begins to regrow. First bone slowly reforms itself, then tendons. Finally muscle and skin. The entire process doesn't take more than a few seconds, and once done you retrieve your finger from the sand where it fell. “Convinced?”

The guard nods, mouth set in a thin line, and you shove the dagger back into your cloak before tossing your severed finger to the guard. He fumbles the catch completely, letting out a surprised yelp. Darzi just sighs aloud from the driver's bench. The other guard quickly bows low, retreating with his companion to the gates. There's an exchange of shouts before the massive wooden doors start to grind opening.

You're actually rather impressed with Nazir. There are seldom few fortified towns this deep into Pidjata, most Bays make due with a fortified tower, if that. Some just live in the biggest hut at the center of the village. By your admittedly rough estimate, the walls of Nazir are a solid thirty feet high all around with guard towers at each of the four corners probably reaching as high as fifty feet.
(2/4)
>>
There is a village clinging to the walls composed mainly of marketplaces, housing, and barracks. There's also a small temple dedicated to Pani at one end of the village. As the gates swing fully open you're afforded a much more spectacular view of the city proper. While certainly no El-Amin, Nazir seems to be thriving. Multi-story shops line the streets, likely serving as both home and business to the shopkeepers who run them. The streets are lit even at this hour by glass lanterns hung from tall iron poles. You think you might see an inn up ahead, light still pouring from its windows even now.

You climb back onto the carriage as it starts rolling forward. The palace is the largest structure for miles in any one direction, its tallest spire seeming to touch the clouds themselves, so you have no trouble navigating there. You pass a large temple dedicated to Pani, colorful red, gold, and blue fish swimming through the waters of the ornamental pools which surround the enormous domed structure. You also pass a bath house, a theater, a small arena, and an empty market plaza; as well as all manner of money changers, jewelers, tailors, and spice traders.

You imagine in the day, filled with people and vendors hawking their goods, these streets would be quite impressive. Unfortunately you don't see another soul in sight except for a patrolling guardsman every now and again. Perhaps there was some sort of civil unrest?

Soon you arrive at the palace and the guards wave you through the iron gates up to the palace proper. Darzi pulls the carriage to a stop just inside the gates and slides out of the driver's bench to the cobblestones of the courtyard. You let go of the chain you'd been using to hold yourself to the side of the carriage and slap the door to the carriage's compartment. Mortia and Profectus emerge a moment later.

A slave in white linen robes, an elven man, approaches your group as one of his compatriots slides into the driver's bench of your carriage, presumably to stable your camels. The elf speaks, his Samjan impeccable. “Sheikh Zaahir has asked not to be disturbed, but if you'll follow me I will take you to your rooms. I'm sure the Sheikh would be pleased to speak with you over dinner.”

No. Vasuda was a result of alcohol and has been retconned. Attempting to fuck and reliving the gangbangs never happened anymore.

Soma has never said what any of the "boots" were. The live stream thing was clearly one, and anons are assuming Aisha being pregnant is another, but it's unconfirmed.

Nobody knows what the third boot is or if it's even happened yet. One potential is the humie bitch being pregnant. According to the Nigger Jew, he never confirmed that they used contraceptives then, just that they exist.

You frown. What is your brother doing that's so important? “I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation. There's a camp of four hundred slavers sitting on the border between our lands and those of our neighbors. They plan to march through our lands raiding and pillaging as they go until they reach the coast, where they'll meet up at some prearranged location to offload the men and women they've captured. My companions and I have managed to poison them, but to deliver the final blow we'll need to raise the levies.”

The slave blinks, taking a moment to absorb all that you've just said. After a long pause he finally nods. “Right, then. Follow me to the main hall, the Sheikh will surely meet you there shortly.”

The slave turns sharply on his heel and starts marching towards the colonnade at the end of the courtyard. There are no doors, rather just a arched entryway into a foyer. You barely have any time at all to admire the carefully kept garden or the polished marble floors before you're led onward, into a far more intimate throne room.

Sofas line the walls, all turned to face the throne at the back of the room. It's little more than a gilded sofa with satin upholstery, a golden paneled frame spread out behind it depicting images of some forgotten battle, whatever paint originally decorated the individual panels has long since flaked away, leaving only the thin indentations of figures wrapped together in battle. At the center of the room is a fountain, flanked on each side by a woven rug.

The slave clears his throat. “Make yourself comfortable, I'll be back momentarily.” That's all he says before vanishing through a side door.

Almost immediately Profectus occupies a spot stretched out amidst overstuffed pillows next to a hookah pipe. You opt instead for one of the sofas, as do Fulvia, Mortia, and Chrys. Darzi elects to stand rather than sit, pacing the room anxiously while waiting for your brother to appear. Coffee and tea are brought out, alongside slices of baklava. However, even after the snacks have been finished and cups drained you've still yet to see hide or hair of your brother.

Finally he steps out of the same side door the slave vanished through earlier, rubbing sleep from his eyes. His hair is tied back in a short ponytail and he seems to have hastily dressed himself in a rich red coat embroidered with gold thread and a pair of poofy white trousers which he's tucked into a pair of riding boots.

He slumps down into the throne at the end of the hall, the slave who escorted you placing a cup of coffee in your brother's hands before retreating to the back of the room, largely fading into the background. Finally your brother speaks. “Now then, what's this I hear about bandits on our borders, Mikhael? Are you sure it wasn't just a particularly large raiding force attacking one of our neighbors? The minor lords dotting our eastern frontier are rarely, if ever, at peace with one another.”

You stand, approaching the throne. “I'm sure. They were raiding not for plunder, but for slaves. Everyone in the Shahdom knows that enslaving a free man without cause is a death sentence. I also overheard a conversation between their leader and a insubordinate while I was poisoning their supplies. They were discussing whether or not they ought to raid our lands, ultimately deciding that they should.”

You pause, thinking back on what other evidence you might present to convince your brother. “They also spoke Samjan with a strange accent which I suspect may be Samrajyan in origin, and many among their number bore the scars of Aghtaki.”

Your brother leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I think I've heard of these slavers. They've been raiding the area for years, from what I understand. They skirt the edge of the Pa'vala to get around the border and then ravage the countryside. Supposedly their leader is some sort of Vatis, never seen outside of his armor. He's gained quite the reputation for brutality, as I hear it. I don't think they've ever come this far inland before.”

Zaahir falls silent, momentarily lost in thought. “How long do we have until this poison of yours wears off, or is it lethal?”

You glance behind you at Mortia sitting on a bench, she stares back at you, clearly not comprehending the exchange between you and your brother. Switching to Rhynian, you repeat his question. “How long will the poison last, and what is it exactly?”

Mortia perks up. “Oh! It's, uhh...” She trails off, pursing her lips briefly in thought. “Well, it causes extreme intestinal discomfort. Vomiting, diarrhea, swelling, and pain are the usual symptoms. Usually it passes through the system in about three days, but some recover faster than others. Symptoms usually set in around an hour after initial consumption and they hit hard. I would be surprised if anyone affected is able to walk at all for the next several days.”

Your brother nods, responding in Rhynian. “So we have two or so days to rally our forces? That's not a lot of time. I can send out messages to the various Istandar responsible for governing the divisions of our lands, calling for them to raise their levies and gather in Nazir, but-” He trails off, cocking his head to one side contemplatively. “I suppose counting the city guard Nazir can provide a levy of around three hundred men, give or take a dozen or so in either direction.”

He turns towards his slave, you're beginning to think that particular slave acts as something of an advisor. “How many troops would you say we have within two days' travel?”

The slave's response is surprisingly prompt, he doesn't even have to think about it. “At last count, Sheikh, there were five hundred and thirteen young men of fighting age in Nazir and its hinterlands. I suspect those could be reinforced with an additional one hundred and forty nine from the villages along the northern and western coast if you were willing to wait until sunrise tomorrow to begin the assault.”

Your brother nods, sitting up straighter. “Six hundred sixty two poorly trained peasant levies versus four hundred or so hardened military veterans too busy shitting themselves to fight, if you're willing to wait a day or so that is.”

You've only got a three day window, if you spend the next two days gathering your forces some of the bandits will likely recover and it's almost certain that the affects of the poison will have started to abate. “I think it would be best if we attack in the morning, without waiting for reinforcements from the coastal villages. Right now we have the advantage of surprise and momentum, we need to maintain those advantages.”

Darzi is quick to interrupt. “Still, you should call up the levies from the villages and have them act as defenders of Nazir. If this battle does go poorly, which I doubt it will, we'll want to have a fallback position ready. Nazir is heavily fortified, but if we leave it entirely undefended I doubt they'd have much trouble capturing it from the women, children, and infirm left behind.”

The slave seems to agree. “Additional reinforcements could also serve to replenish a weakened army, should we not be able to crush the bandits in one decisive battle.”

Your brother nods once you've all finished speaking. “Right then. Gerasimos, I want you to send out messengers to the coastal villages as well as the villages immediately surrounding Nazir. Send messengers upstream as well, I imagine soldiers can be sent downstream faster than they can march. We'll attack at dawn, as Mikhael suggest.”

Gerasimos, the elven slave, is quick to follow orders. However, before he can vanish through the doorway Zaahir calls out. “Wait one moment, would you. An idea occurred to me. Get in touch with the Temple in Nazir and ask them if they'd be willing to serve as healers, and contact the Laborer's Guild about any Vatis they might be able to provide.”

Why would they? Is funny joke about Muslim culture.
>>
The slave bows at the waist before slipping out the door, leaving just you, your elder brother, and your companions in the room. It's Zaahir who's the first to speak. “Well then, Mikhael. I think I'll retire for the night. If we're to do battle I'll need a full night's sleep. I recommend you do the same.” He smiles apologetically. “No offense, but you look like shit. Are you sleeping at all?”

Your brother always has tried to look after you. More than your parents ever did. “Yes, Zaahir. Occasionally that is. I only look so haggard now because of a meditation method I recently attempted. It left me drained and I haven't had the chance to properly recuperate with all this bandit nonsense to deal with.”

Zaahir stands, stretching his back until there's a loud pop. “The Gods know there's more than enough room to house you and your companions in this place. We have something like three hundred bedrooms in this monstrosity. Granted, most of those are the Slave's quarters and it simply wouldn't do to house family there, but- well, you get the picture.”

Gods above, this place makes your estate in El-Amin look tiny by comparison. You knew that just based on the fact that it's five or six times the size of your estate no matter how you cut it, but it's still hard to believe that this palace belongs to your family.
(2/3)
>>
Your brother motions for you and your companions to follow him, and once Fulvia manages to get Profectus to his feet that's precisely what you do. It's as you're scaling a spiral staircase that Darzi's voice pervades your thoughts. {I want to take the field, Mik.}

You're a little confused. {Why wouldn't you? I didn't think any of us would just spend the battle sitting on ass sipping drinks and enjoying dessert.}

You pick up a note of exaggeration in the brief contact between her mind and yours. {I don't mean like that, I want to lead. At least on one flank.}

You didn't really think you were going to be breaking your forces up into separate flanks and wings and all that nonsense, but you suppose it would make sense to do so even in a small engagement like this. {Sure, I'd be fine with you taking on some sort of command role. You'll need to talk to my brother and argue your case, since he's my father's regent and thus in charge of the army. I will say that I think you ought to take someone with you as a bodyguard, someone from the party. I don't want any of us getting isolated from the others.}

A curious mix of relief, fear, and resolve passes through the connection you share. {I'll take Profectus. Lazy and generally useless as he is I think he'll do well in actual combat. He was a professional soldier after all. I'm not asking for much, just a small ambush force or a flank to command.}

You get the sense that's not all she's really asking for, she wants more, but she's holding back. {What's got you so interested in commanding troops in the field all of a sudden?}

There's a pause. Darzi only responds once you reach the sixth floor of this tower you seem to be climbing and exit the stairwell. {I want to prove something, to myself really. That and I'm the most experienced commander here. I lead a force of two hundred El-Amin City Guard in an assault on Arsah, an old Hiacian fort that had been reclaimed by bandits. I doubt defeating a weakened enemy with superior numbers in an open field will be more difficult than dislodging a superior force entrenched in a fortified position.}

You think you might have heard about that actually. It was almost a decade ago, you were only nineteen years old at the time. Actually, just how old is Darzi? If she was already old enough to lead forces in battle on her own merits, after advancing through the ranks, she probably would've needed to be at least in her mid twenties. {How did you manage to accomplish that?}

She seems to take obvious pride in recounting the accomplishment that probably earned her the rank of Captain. {I did my research. There was a sealed tunnel which led into the fort. I sent the bulk of my force through that tunnel while waiting outside with the rest of my men in hiding. The bandits fled the fort when it was clear their choices were lock themselves in the store rooms to slowly starve to death or abandon their base. It was a slaughter.}

Regardless your brother comes to a stop in the middle of a long hallway with doors. For the length of the hall, there are surprisingly few doors. Only eight in all. “Here are your rooms, it doesn't particularly matter which one you choose. I'll have my servants wake you once the troops are assembled and after a light breakfast we can discuss strategy in my study.”

Zaahir claps you affectionately on the shoulder before taking his leave, presumably returning to his own bedroom. Your party quickly claim their rooms, though Fulvia has to help Profectus to his. Honestly, what sort of dope was he smoking? He didn't really strike you as a lightweight.

You pick your own room, finding it as lavish as you expected. The first room of your suite is a sitting room with a fantastic view of the city below and a number of couches and chairs set out around the hearth. The other room is the bedroom proper, a comparatively small circular room with a large poster bed, silk curtains providing a degree of privacy.

Considering the fact you're still not fully restored after your last meditation, and you've only got a few hours to rest before the army is assembled, you quickly strip your robes and cloak off before crawling into bed. Real sheets and a feather mattress send you off with a caress into wonderful, dreamless sleep.

>EEEEEND THREAD
Really sorry about the late start tonight. I'll endeavor to start the Friday thread on time. Next thread you'll plan out the assault, begin combat, and (fingers crossed) finish the bandit plot line.
Also, ignoring the face tattoo and the hair color, some weird anatomy, and the lack of a stone arm this is a pretty good alt for Prof.

Thanks for running, Soma.

And you never did say how long you've waited to do some large scale combat.

I've been waiting since Polopp, really looking forward to this and don't want to fuck it up. Like, for real. I want this to be fun for y'all. Gotta get my shit all together. Gotta put it in a backpack so it's all together, and I can take it somewhere.

So all you need to do is ignore all the distinguishing features and he looks like someone else. Amazing.

Thanks for the late night run. Well, late night for me, anyway.

You need to running when you're not out of steam or otherwise reluctant to do it, soma. We don't want you losing your love for this quest
