You think very briefly of introducing Arizona and letting the morons get a camera-full of her for a second - before deciding that having a bunch of microphones shoved in the mute, almost invisible girl's face would end very, very badly. And even if you did, there's no telling which way that pack of furry little bastards will turn.

The only option is to head them off at the strait.

You slip out of the room and break into your fastest hobble with Arizona close at your heels. You make the lobby in time to see a young girl sprinting towards the double glass doors, missing a shoe. Behind her are three corgis, foam flying from their diminutive muzzles as they close on her. You hit the door-bar with your shoulder as you barrel through, but even with the path open you can see the girl isn't going to make it.

It depends on the pizza, and on the dog.
Most dogs are lactose intolerant, meaning indigestion from the cheese.
Then there's the chance of garlic or onion as part of the toppings, which are poisonous to dogs.
Then there's the oil, salt, and spices that could also be a little toxic. Then there's the development of pancreatitis over time.

There's the potential that nothing wrong will happen because the pizza will get converted into metal, explosives, and oil, but do we really want to subject all of our PT Boats to that test in the middle of a fucking war, when we're in theater?

Seeing that the onrushing furry furies are your own, er, vessels, and nominally under your command, you draw yourself up to your full height, suck in a deep lungful of breath and cut loose with your loudest, angriest bellow just as you feel Arizona setting your hat back on your brow.

“SAILORS, CUT THROTTLE AND HEAVE TO!”

The US Navy is a highly professional force that actively recruits good, professional people for its commissioned and warrant officer ranks (most of the time.) Despite that, sailors are still marvelously capable of operating a multimillion dollar sensor suite for months on end with little sleep, till it seems like they are detecting surface contacts unassisted via trance, like the oracle of fucking Delphi - and then they walk off the ship with a laminated illustrated diagram of their “three-drink maximum” tied to their wrist and come back three sheets to the wind, two bells past the point of no return and in possession of a starfish named Betelgeuse. People like this set a man up for the most violent mood swings on Earth, from fatherly pride to aghast with rage in mere heartbeats. You can do Disappointed Dad pretty good, but the time you caught a crew chief (with a fucking college degree, no less) seating 5-inch PD fuzes with a hammer you managed to drag him halfway to the rail before you vanished under a dogpile of Marines. (You still think Hate was miffed at your hypocrisy rather than your intent.) And serving on a Flight I/II boat, which creaks, groans, bitches and generally makes more noise than anything else save a CV's fantail deck has honed your Angry Voice into a LOUD angry voice. The booming thunder of your wrath echoes over the torn-up turf, the corgis little ears twitching as the shockwave passes -

- and they keep plowing on, snarling and barking like tiny madmen, still intent on their prey.

For a second you're so stunned that you just stare dumbfounded as the first one catches the fleeing girl's heel and sinks their teeth in, bringing her to ground. The ragged edge of her scream rips through you, scraping down your nerves and turning your stomach - it echoes somewhere in your mind, around a shattered bridge that's beginning to burn.

By the time you're moving it's too late - the cane is just swinging back like a baseball bat, still too far away to use when the first sharp crack snaps across the yard, one of the corgis jerking violently as Arizona's round hits home. The victim has curled into an incoherent ball, her scream growing hoarse as the others savage her crossed arms, trying for her vitals. Two more shots send them flying, then fleeing at a fast limp, trailing gooey oil from their wounds.

You stumble down to one knee by the girl. “Are you okay?”

The girl - Shigure, you see now - scuttles away from you on hands and knees before bursting into flight again, sobbing wildly and flinging her arms around, her bite wounds trailing little drops of blood on the concrete. By the time you find your feet, she's long gone around the corner of the building.

>We can't leave her like this, not at all - catch her.
>We can't let these goddamn dogs keep running loose - we need to catch them, now.

Sure, but they have the durability of full-size PT boats. The scaling effect applies to the corgis, but not Ari's revolver, since that's just a regular gun, not part of her ship outfit.

Shoot a wooden PT boat with a regular old revolver, and you might make a hole, but it's not going to be any serious damage. I'm guessing their wounds are comparable to the worse end of what you might get horsing around with BB guns -- enough to hurt and cause a little bleeding, but not really anything more serious than that.

Basically, the justification is that people would be more scared of...tiny, wooden torpedo boats somehow going abyssal as a result of being scuttled then, y'know, justice for wrongdoing.
They'll just get a swat behind the ear and the story will continue on as if nothing is wrong with deliberate attacks on an ally and willfully ignoring orders.

Eh, maybe, but I wouldn't count on the scaling effect coming into play for weapons that are more "props" rather than actual ship's armaments, even if they did manifest with them.

For instance, I don't think Tenryuu's sword or Tatsuta's glaive do ship-level damage. Not quite a direct comparison, since those are melee weapons rather than anything that could have a direct parallel to what ships (well, ships past the days of ramming as a routine tactic) would actually use, but still.

Sammy only lasted as long as she did because of Japans notorious inability to hit a small moving target. As soon as she WAS hit, she was completely fucked up.

Arizona's 5"/25's could be firing AA fragmentation rounds at her and it would still penetrate her thickest armor.

Arizona doesn't have a fancyassed Radar FCS, there, brotato. She's got the same shit, more or less, the fucking nips had. That hellfire headset? that's a search radar at best. At fucking best. Not to mention all her 5" guns are either fucking casemate or AA, neither of which is going to be terribly fucking effective against Sammy B.

Northampton could probably shut her down, he's got the firepower and FCS to pull it off. Willie might could, assuming she could unfuck herself. Hornet's hosed, Harder's probably 50/50 at fucking best.

>>

Hate, Arizonas 5"/25's fire at twenty rounds per minute and she has four per side in addition to five 5"/51's designed for the EXPLICIT purpose of killing torpedo boats and destroyers which fire at 10 rounds per minute on average.

Sammy has 130 rounds each minute from Arizonas 5" guns alone.

And before anyone says "oooh, the 5"/25 was a single purpose AA mount!", shut the fuck up. The guns were used against surface targets and found to be EXTREMELY accurate because the AA mount allowed for them to be trained on moving targets much easier than the heavy 5"/51 mounts.

I'm not even an Arizonafag, Sammy is quite simply fucked.

I mean, the KanColle game gives ships a luck stat based on their actual record of pulling out of tough scrapes during the war. If anything remotely similar is at play in this quest (which I suspect there may be, given that we've recently had Shigure's unusual luck brought up in-story, albeit merely as superstition/speculation), Sammy would certainly qualify for such a boost.

Half of their toughness comes from being living vessels for the collective "I DON'T GIVE TWO TUGS ON A DEAD DOG'S COCK" of their famous moment in time.

Sammy's like...perma-adrenaline dumped. She might be shot to shit, but doesn't FEEL it, doesn't acknowledge it. She doesn't care.

Her boilers run on pure liquid spite and rage, and rage...Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.

Sammy is more like Yuudachi, the Nightmare of Solomon though.

Both where not really lucky as they both sank in their famous battles, but they both punched well above their weight class and did damage completely out of proportion to what their type usually accomplish.
>>
>>42695424

>>42695385
The luck stat tends to correlate more to survival ability than to damage dealt. Yukikaze has the highest luck in-game, while Yuudachi's is only slightly above average despite her exploits in the Solomon sea.

Then again, Myoukou has more luck than Haguro somehow, so who knows?
>>
>>42695365

she has 9 guns per side. Let's be fucking generous and pretend she can bring all the casemate 5" guns to bear against Sammy. We'll fucking pretend. That's nine guns firing an average of 10 rounds a minute, so 90 rounds a minute, give or fucking take.

During Samar, Sammy B was under fire from at least Chikuma, Nagato, Yamato, and Haruna, as wel as that fucking hyperactive bint Kongo.

I'm more than fucking willing to bet she was taking more than 90 rounds a fucking minute at that point. And she still fucked Chikuma the fuck up.

And before you go "MUH FCS" fucking no. Arizona never got the radar FCS that made our shit so fucking scary, she had the same bullshit rangefinders everyone else had- and nip FCS crews were trained to FUCK and back. Ours weren't, we had a fucking amazeballs computer to do it for us.

悪夢 (Akumu) is nightmare
悪魔 (Akuma) is demon
most sources I could find are nightmare.

also this:
The whole Nightmare of Solomon can be interpreted as a Gundam reference, but the Nightmare of Solomon in Gundam is actually an allusion to Yuudachi. Anavel Gato single-handedly holds off an Earth Federation force during the Battle of Solomon, allowing his allies to withdraw and survive. During the Solomon Islands campaign, Yuudachi thwarts the American fleet's attempt to intercept the IJN task group she is a part of, breaking their line and creating a tactical stalemate, allowing her allies to withdraw and survive. Thus, the Nightmare of Solomon.

US gun crews were equal in daylight performance to Japanese ones. The only thing that was skimped out on was night time training. US gunnery during the day using yee olde manual rangefinders was every bit as good as a Japanese or British crew, but the 5"/25 is far and away more flexible at engaging targets on the surface than the equivalent jap AA gun.

>And third, If Sammy B goes over on the spot, she's going to be angry, and moving, before Arizona even has outfit. Arizona is straight up fucked.

considering ship kits are literally split second things, sammy is going to be flailing at a very angry 35,000 ton battleship at point blank range that has more than twice her main armament on each side. Even Arizonas .50 cals can penetrate Sammy at that distance.

You can go for speed and maneuverability either. Arizonas a standard type. That means a tighter turning circle than sammy and 21 knots to Sammy's 24.

You swear violently, tossing Arizona the keys to the Jeep. “You drive, hon, I've got to call base security and have them round'em up.” With their Outfits summoned, mere pistol bullets will only discourage them - at best. PT boats were basically the motorcycle gangs of the Pacific islands; they strapped any goddamn ordinance they could to the deck and got into frequent shoot-outs with shallow-draft barges bristling with even heavier weaponry. Their campaign was a nautical Mad Max movie that lasted four damn years, in essence - and without a firm hand literally holding their leash, they've reverted to their basic instincts. You were worried that PT-109 might show up to settle a grudge, but it seems Shigure's harassers from Saigurio strait are intent on finishing the job.

Torpedo attack of bigger vessels was the job they were built for, and rarely got to attempt. An involuntary shudder goes through you at the thought, for no reason you can immediately finger.

Following your directions, Arizona curbs the jeep near the closest area of significant greenery, then helps you out to hike the remaining distance, following the trickled trail of blood on the sidewalks to a nearby tree; the beginning of a rough untamed patch in the middle of the base that climbs one of the many very steep hills. Much like the first time you met her, she's taken refuge in the boughs to escape her canine pursuers.

Walking beneath the thick canopy, you touch the trunk gently and look up into the branches. There's a slight rustling above as you're spotted.

“G-go away.”

“Shigure?”

“GO AWAY! GO AWAY YOU YANKEE, GO AWAY!”

“Shigure, I'm n-”

“GO TO HELL, ALL OF YOU!” Shigure's youthful voice is strained and brittle.

Arizona taps you on the shoulder to catch your attention, then points you towards a bystander - an extremely bored-looking girl who wears her long dark hair in a single thick braid. She's gazing blankly at the whole tableau with the air of someone staring at something just barely unique enough that they don't know what kind of retarded bullshit to write it off as yet.

“Uh... Kitakami,” you say, her name surfacing after a moment. “Could you... uh...?” You gesture at the tree.

>>
She blinks slowly, her head swiveling left, then right to verify that you are, indeed, addressing her. She turns her bored eyes back to you. “You want me to do it?”

You just stare at her, letting her read the “no shit” plastered across you face.

She rolls her shoulders; not quite a shrug. “Fine.” Striding beneath the tree, she sighs, crosses her arms, and cranes her neck back to address the branches. “Look, you can't go claiming all the foliage on base. You only get one. You can sulk all you want; nobody's gonna stop you. But at least don't bother everyone else.”

“I DON'T! I DON'T! I DON'T!” The canopy thrashes violently with Shigure's unseen frustration. “I J-J-JUST W-W-WANT TO B-B-E LEFT ALONE A-A-AND TH-THEY W-WON'T LEAVE M-ME BE!”

You snap your fingers to get Kitakami's attention, then point out the blood on the ground and tap your leg to indicate that you need her down from there to receive medical attention.

Kitakami sizes up the blood on the ground, quirking her mouth. It's a nontrivial amount. She takes a deep, deep breath as she accepts that she's gonna have to do this. “I don't give a crap what you want, Shigure. Those retarded puffballs are already gone. If you don't come down, I'll pull you out.”

“You'll die,” Shigure's voice returns with a sudden icy steadiness that sends a pulse of hot alarm through your blood. “They all die. I'll kill you, Kitakami.”
>>
>>42695731
>Kitakami
>anything with destroyers

>>
>>42695650
Because Solomon was the name of someone that supposedly enslaved demons, and the islands where named after him.

And that makes the nickname even more brutal, as its the nightmare of the demon enslaver.
>>
Kitakami's lips tighten as she peers into the tree suspiciously. She backs up carefully till she can stand on tiptoe and whisper at you - “I don't think she's bluffing. I could probably get her either way since we can double-team her. Right, ooh-e-” her voice dies off suddenly, and for a second a ripple of emotion crosses her face. Visibly shaken, she turns back to the tree, her tone sounding actively casual now, rather than just flat-out bored. “"Listen. Come down already. We don't have to go hold hands and have a party or anything. I'll just take you back to your room. I'm not afraid of those drooling rejects the Americans brought over." She flips her braid back over her shoulder. “You owe me for this,” she tells you with a confidence none of you feel anymore.

There is no reply from the tree. You've had this kind of conversation once - with Somalian pirates holding guns to a tanker crew's head. The quick escalation is bad, very bad - pulling back and calling for help isn't an option anymore. Something has to give and soon, and you're worried it's gonna be Shigure.

>Back off - let Kitakami wait. But if Shigure gives no answer, you and Arizona will be too far away to help if Shigure snaps.
>There's no choice - you have to act now before things go straight to hell. Collude with Kitakami and Arizona to tag-team her, just like Kitakami said. Arizona can bounce any shell Shigure can fling and Kitakami can cut off retreat from the rear.

1) A recurring theme in this quest is shipgirl mental issues. Shigure is already at-risk due to the whole "shun the luck vampire" bullshit; getting mauled by corgis certainly isn't going to help matters any. And if she gets too fucked up in the head, that could affect her performance in combat, or even worse possibly even cause her to go Abyssal.

2) The press were, just minutes ago, floating the issue of out-of-control PT boatdogs. If they get wind of a PT corgi attack on an allied shipgirl occurring during that very press conference where they asked about that exact risk and were assured it was not an issue, we would likely have a literal Corgigate scandal on our hands. We have enough on our plate with the Abyssal threat, the last thing we need is to let the media vultures get wind of something to whip up a bullshit frenzy over to add PR hassles to our list of shit to deal with.

It's got nothing to do with waifus, and everything to do with responsible leadership.

It's not even "attacked by Corgis". If it were a one-time thing it could be a thing to deal with.
But they've been harassing her since the quest started. Our very first contact with Shigure had her atop another tree. We don't know how long this has been the case. Either way, it's at least a week of constant paranoia on top of ostracization on top of her standard shipgirl mental fuckery package.

I cannot get past the phrase "they all die". Now that has got to be a reference to her past. If she's afraid that she's a Jonah, then talking her down seems to be the best option. I can't see that.
It seems pretty obvious that Shigure means to kill Kitakami if she tries to pull Shigure from the tree.
I honestly cannot understand how you can see it any other way.
She isn't threatening suicide or thinking that her luck is going to get other people killed; she's been pushed too far and she's not going to get pushed or pulled anymore, and is now determined to kill anyone who tries.

Look, we've got the Arizona at our back. If we need to kill her, we can kill her. She knows that – she's well aware of what the result of a 14 inch round at point-blank range is going to be. This could very well be a suicide by cop kind of situation. So we're going to have to decide whether we want to play this thing safe (for us), or take the risk and hopefully save a girl. We need to make sure that we are the least threatening we can be (no guns) and then we need to tell her that we're not afraid, we need to talk about being a comrade and what that means – because the Japanese certainly haven't done a very good job of installing that particular value. We need to talk about not leaving people behind, even when they fuck up - hell, especially when they fuck up. I think we ought to take a chance here

You take a deep breath, examine the situation from all sides and conclude that it is, indeed, a gigantic stinking ball of shit. You have a star, now. You're promoted. Why are the balls still full-sized by the time they roll into your lap?

You've already crossed underneath the branches before Arizona's slender hand seizes your wrist with an iron grip. You look back at her, matching her stern expression with one of your own. “Arizona, let me go.”

She stares you down, her delicate face hardened against your pleas - perhaps literally face hardened now, given the steel in the grip crushing your wrist. She shakes her head firmly - once.

“That's an *order,* Arizona.”

She flinches as if slapped - and releases your wrist. You seize the lower boughs and swing your legs into the branches over your head before she can object, hissing in pain as the hole in your right thigh makes itself known. The weakness forces you to pull your torso after your legs with your arms, leaving you sweating and sans cover by the time you sit up in the boughs -

- and find yourself staring down the rifling of Shigure's five-inch gun, her dark, empty eyes right behind it.

“Leave.”

“Can't.”

“In pieces, you can,” Shigure says. “Leave, or I kill you.”

“Better me than you,” you reply. “I come out of this tree without you, I get court-martialed, I eat a bullet after I'm humiliated before the world.”

“Like anyone needs *me,*” she hisses. “Just ask that gangrene b-b-bITCH below you, listen t-to her sneer a-t us-”

“You can't be replaced,” you reply. “I can.”

“SHUT UP!” she screams. “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Her eyes are wild and her finger is twitching on a trigger you can't see - turrets don't exactly come equipped for one-handed wielding, after all. But you know you're millimeters away from riding a five-inch shell into hell. Part of you wants to snap, wants to scream, wants to tell her to fish or cut bait, piss or get off the pot, blow your head off or get out of the fucking tree - part of you just wants to slap her and scream till she makes up her fucking mind because you've been sitting in this tree for sixteen months and some mornings you wake up and-

- and do your job. Always, your job. It's why you're here. You feel the words rise to your lips - the logic, the truth - and let them drop away again, unsaid. Somehow, staring down the barrel of a gun held by someone quite willing to use it, you just don't care anymore. The energy to balance on the tightrope just isn't there, much less the inclination.
“Just do it,” you whisper - mouth, even. Her wild eyes barely twitch at this as you lock gazes. She sneers, or grimaces, *something,* but you just roll your shoulders.

Why did you get into this fucking tree, anyway? Did you think she'd listen, in her state? Did you think a mere demonstration of selflessness would have her melting in your arms? You already stared down Kaga's arrow-shaft when you underestimated the live-wire under the innocent, youthful exterior - you just watched the fucking “cute” corgis maul her with a savagery you've scarce seen.

Why?

*Why*?

Well, who fucking cares, now, what's she fucking WAITING on?

You open your mouth to retort and she smashes the gun into your throat, shock shooting through your jaw as the muzzle chips a molar. Her finger twitches on the illusory trigger, her entire frame heaving with her ragged breaths. *“I DIDN'T WANT TO COME BACK! I WANTED TO STAY DEAD!” The gun is dragged from your mouth and pressed against her head, the air split apart by -

The sickening feel of acceleration hits your stomach all at once and you snatch at the trunk, hugging it as vertigo sends sheer instinctive terror surging through your system. Shigure screams, her hands snatching the trunk and dropping her gun as the entire goddamn tree goes over. It hits with a shock that flings you both into the tangled canopy, where you lie, stunned, contemplating the sunny summer sky.

“Fuckers.” Looming into view above you is a massive, rough-looking man who's slinging a chainsaw the size of a medium machine gun; a blade which apparently sliced through the maple's modest trunk like it wasn't there. A dirty piece of masking tape on the engine housing identifies it as 'kshewwww whumwhumwhumwhum',” which you dizzly guess isn't elvish.

Shigure's already staggering upright, weaponless - for the moment. The mechanic - Crab, you realize - spares you his poisonous look of disgust long enough to look up into the middle distance with an even more vile expression. “Fuck me *sideways*, who's *this* bitch?”

Shigure turns to look over her shoulder, and there's a brief rusty-red blur in the vauge shape of a pipe wrench. Something CLANGS with metal-on-metal contact and Shigure drops like the proverbial sack of hammers.

Crab drops the massive chainsaw and leans over, hands on his knees, to stare at you. “You.”

He flips you the bird over the back of the battered motor pool SUV's seat and leans on the horn as he drives away, spraying you, Arizona and Kitakami with gravel as he peels out from the shoulder.

Once we got to the final vote, there wasn't much we could do. Settle was right, if we came out of that tree without her we would get court-martialed.

We're probably going to get court-martialed anyway. We are in command, and that means we have total responsibility for everything that happens involving our personnel. Considering we hung quite a few Japanese officers after World War II for losing control of their men – I do not see how we get out of this. I think the only chance we have is if the ship girls insist that we remain in command – that might get us a free pass until after the war ... But our career in the military is over

I suppose we could have stopped the Corgis when they were chasing the landscaper, or tried a more effective approach to stopping the Corgis (actual physical violence).

But in the first case, we were considering the possibility of a massive media shitstorm versus previously embarrassing but ultimately harmless shenanigans, so why would we be expected to stop the Corgis?
As for the second, those dogs were in their fit outs, judging how they were able to take Arizona's gunshots; hitting them with a cane wouldn't have stopped them.
That and what good is a flag officer if his sailors won't listen to his orders?

I literally offered anon a "FIRE INTO THE CEILING AND SHOUT" vote. Alongside the sane ones. In my experience, the insane one always wins, no matter how evenly you present the votes. But then anon was super sane and responsible...

... until they weren't. But I can't even say it was a "bad" vote; it's the kind of thing that has already worked for Settle a few times - until he got into that tree, realized that this time, the Raw, Direct Admission wasn't going to work. That this time, the shipgirl would not be Moved By His Sympathetic Traumas. No. This time, she was just going to snap and fucking kill someone - maybe him, maybe herself, maybe manifest an ashcan and blow everyone in 40 feet into a fine red mist.

Trusting ktkm to talk down a destroyer would've resulted in Shigure's head being reconfigured as a canoe. The triple takedown would've worked, but would've involved putting Arizona in the line of fire, which Settle is adverse to both in and out of character. And the choice they chose - well, it resulted in Crab just cutting Gordian's knot and walking away muttering about fucking drama whores.

>well anon focused on preventing them and in turn unleashing a far worse clusterfuck. Assuming our refusal to talk to Hate didn't play a rule in it.

Anon has consistently blown off almost every single "talk to Hate" vote ever presented to them, and I've made no secret that the man is a powder keg under incredible pressure, which has recently taken a violent turn for the worse.

>Given your tear drinking tendencies, it's hard to believe you didn't have it happen intentionally.

I've set up this scene from the very beginning of the quest - from the night that Settle first encountered Shigure treed by the goddamn Corgis. Anon's write-in was funny, so I went with it, but anon chose to let it ride at the time, which was reasonable enough. And now you're gonna cry foul because Settle finally put his foot into a livetrap that actually went off?

>write as normal

"Lol planefag will never kill a character"

>write this

"Wow that was just intentionally mean i'mma quit"

I dunno, man. I dunno. Can't please everyone, I guess. But on the balance? Shigure did nothing wrong - and I'd have killed her faster than Yuma and BearBint had the votes gone that way.
>>
>>42696938
>A few of the possibilities had Shigure actually successfully blowing her brains out.
>After we cocked up stopping the corgis the only options with regard to Shigure were to leave her alone, wait for her to talk to kitakami, rush her with a battleship, or go talk to her ourselves
>"Lel you didn't follow her so she blew her own bridge out." Yeah nah
>Going ourselves means Shigure will be able to read a book on how stupid we were made out of that tree
So basically she woulda popped herself after Arizona tanked some shots on the way up or Kitacunti would have gotten impatient and acted like a bitch unintentionally fishing for a grey matter shower.

So since we just got done listening to the ranting of a crazy shipgirl, how about a short writefaggotry about the ranting of a crazy shipgirl?

I can hear them in my head.

The Voices. The little creatures that have harassed me since my awakening. Telling me to eat, telling me to sleep, telling me to accept my weakness.

Why are they here? I have no need for crew now, the ship moves… no, I move of my own will. That is who I am, the guns and boilers and hull, not this body in those traitor’s guise.

Heh.

What bitter irony. My hull is stronger than ever, steel replaced with glittering black, while I am trapped in this prison of flesh and blood. Attempting to break free is pointless. Clawing at the cage and the rags that cover it only sees the wounds mirrored, rending my decks and guns, leaving me weakened.

And then the drone of voices redoubles—telling me to eat, to rest, to regain my strength…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDO8Y-v6tiM

Hmm?

What are you? Another merchant who thinks running will change their fate? Or have the cowards finally decided to fight back? No, I shouldn’t get my hopes up. After all my sisters they sent to the breakers, I doubt they have any ships left to face me.

Well if they insist on letting me kill them, who am I to deny their kindness? Hard over port…

OK, now that I've had a few minutes to digest – here's my thought. As I said earlier, we were walking into a suicide\suicide by cop situation. The best outcome we could hope for is all of the parties left that situational live, giving us an opportunity to fix it later. I noted in a previous post that in order to do that we would have to personally risk our life in the hopes that we could save the life Of our shipgirl in the tree. We made that choice, as any US Navy officer would've made under those circumstances, and the fact is we are all still alive with a chance to fix this cluster fuck. That's not a win, but it sure as hell is not a loss either

>And the US did just as bad during the New Guinea campaign. We didn't *take* POWs, and we had absolutely no problem with machine-gunning and bombing men in the water until none were left. Don't pretend the Army's hands were lily-white here.

Lemme tell you a story my uncle related to me about his time on a destroyer in the Pacific, in 44-45. One day, they shoot down a kamikaze pilot attacking them. He ditches, gets in the water, and starts waving for help. So they send out a whaleboat to pick him up. He draws a knife and tries to murder the men sent to save his life, so they kick his ass and dump him in the brig.

A few days later, another kamakazie pilot is nailed and manages to ditch. He's in the water, he waves at them. The captain comes over the loudspeaker and says "Somebody help that son-of-a-bitch," and they help him out with a long burst from the 20 mike mike.

Honestly? If I was in the New Guinea campaign, I'd kill every one of the fanatical insane motherfuckers too. To take prisoners, you need people willing to surrender. And we knew plenty of what the Japanese were doing to their prisoners at that point. It's easy to be high-handed and holy-minded 70 years after the fact as we nurse our beers in our bedrooms and shitpost on 4chan, but in the context of the age, let's remember who started that downward slide into mutual brutality, eh?

That was in response to "if Sammy ordered her dogs to attack Shigure, and they disobeyed an order from an admiral to instead maul her".
We euthanize dogs who do that, you know.
But they would have gotten off with no jail time even if Shigure had blown her brains out, right?
Because at that point Settle would be court-martialed and the dogs simply reassigned.

I never said they weren't also doing it or that the US was worse. My whole deal was whatever justifications that were given at his trial, General Homma was shot for the crime of defeating Douglas MacArthur on the field of battle.

Especially since he was literally the only general in the IJA that didn't tolerate his troops raping their way through Asia. He kept getting reassigned because of that.

The guy suggesting we force Hate to old yeller his own charges was just as fucked up, really. And that's good, because Settle isn't nearly as nice a guy as anon's voters have had him appear for most of the quest. Anon has molded him into very much what I saw in him when I first started writing him - responsible, controlled, haunted - but with something else in him, something that slips out every now and then when he can't resist - like how he almost suffocated that pimp to death on the train.

Ironically, we simply saw the corgis is nothing more than dogs in the moment we sycced them on Shiguire. That's exactly the same mistake that those outside of our group had been making about the ship girls themselves. In other words, if we had seen them as suicidal little PT boats. Rather than dogs, we would never of made that mistake. I am just as guilty as the rest of us in making that mistake – but it does prove the point that we have to remember that the people we're dealing with are ships with a lot of memories crammed into the bodies of girls. We ought not to treat them like pieces of hardware, we can't just treat them like plane old girls either. We let ourselves get distracted by what we wrote off as cute puppies. we paid for it. Let's remember that for next time.

So, did you have anything in mind for what would happen to the Corgis if they did lead directly to Shigure's suicide?
We already know that Settle would be court-martialed, that the entire thing couldn't be hushed up. Not with something as publicly visible and militarily important as a kanmusu in a time of war. The USN might try to play it off as a friendly fire incident, and the JMSDF might accept that to cover up the suicide so that the mental state of the kanmusu don't get out.

But what about all of the responsible parties?
Settle, because he was in command.
Hate, because he was supposed to be in charge of the Corgis.
And the Corgis involved in the attack itself.

Assuming that if it was Sammy that ordered the Corgis to maul Shigure, she'd probably still be shielded from any prosecution because of her status as an NBE.

Update fast: PLANEFAG Y U NO WAIT

Wait for votes: >1h30m three story posts planefag ded post ktkm

Honestly I personally feel that "waiting for more votes" is my excuse to myself for not being in the writing groove (which is, itself, a term that is an excuse for being a lazy greek fuck,) Either that or I'll go yell at the IRC cabal for ideas. This never, ever fucking works. The things that take off and work well are random comments from anon during thread discussion - not even write-ins, just toss off musings most of the time - and random shit my fellow writefags kick around in IRC that trigger something useful.

But seriously, considering that it never seems to happen when I deliberately seek it out, I still feel that "waiting for votes" is a cop-out excuse to myself. I try to update twice an hour, which means I have about 30 minutes per update - to decide what's happening, to whom, how to spin it and then I have to write it halfway decently. This doesn't leave much room for votes to roll in - say 15 minutes for votes, I have 15 minutes to write all that. This is why I almost never manage it. Still, my goal is always the same - as many updates as possible.

No it fucking doesn't work that way. Not even in the slightest. We need somebody in charge of the corgis who isn't off being a brooding main character. We need to put some of these girls on suicide watch, and track down some shrinks who are as brave/stupid as us.
We need to meet our ACTUAL staff so that Naka doesn't drink herself to death on our paperwork on top of her other shit.
We need to encourage the shipgirls to be able to lean on eachother and sort their own shit out so Goto and Settle don't break.
We need to fucking Admiral

>>
>>42697547
Yeah it's not a problem per se, it's just a consequence of the medium. I don't begrudge you for that.

But it's something to account for. If fast, mostly-thoughtless decision-making is what the quest accommodates, then perhaps you ought to throw the voters a more limited choice every now and then so they can actually solve shit.
For example, what >>42697541 pointed out. We were following up on Shigure and suddenly HAMP KONGOU SHENANIGANS that _seemed_ urgent at the time so of course anon will latch onto it. And then it was just a tea party (that didn't even appear to explode, amazingly!) and you write Shigure hitting off with Hamp which makes anon think things are under control in that front so we go take care of the Kongou fire and then we look back and HEY LOOK SHIGURE'S FUCKING GETTING MAULED BY FUCKING CORGIS and wait what the fuck happened where did Hamp go and oh wait weren't we supposed to be getting out CAC card back at some point?

It's fire after fire after fire, whether a real fire or not, and it's not actually /necessary/. Sometimes things have to, pardon the pun, settle down a bit. You're a great writer but I honestly believe you are overreliant on the sudden twist.

Except this isn't *a* soldier or even a group of soldiers.
We're talking a highly valuable wartime asset that cannot be replaced easily.

Imagine if the crew of Enterprise had up and ran off. Heads would roll, and it won't be limited to the sailors onboard.

Granted, that's an extreme situation, but the point remains. Admirals are cheap, and through his inaction, Settle indirectly led to the loss of a war asset.
>>
>>42697650

Ayup, hate begets hate. We take prisoners because we want our enemies to extend the same courtesy. The moment someone escalates both sides go directly to wishing their enemy to die in a fire.

Listened to a WW2 documentary not long ago where they were reading excerpts from sailor journals. One of the entries went like this:

>Japanese pilot gets shot down, destroyer slows to a stop to pick him up
>As soon as they pull him onto the deck another zero comes along and strafes the ship
>The sailors beat the pilot to death with a wrench and throw him back overboard
This basically sums up the pacific war. No time for compassion, only death now.

>>42697506
Neither do I to be honest. One problem I have with this quest format that a lot of them suffer from is not completing arcs of plot before moving on to the next thing. Sometimes the character just has to sit and finish that goddamn paperwork because it's very important for later events. Every time something halfway important happens it always gets cut short because HAMP TIME MOTHERFUCKER HAMPHAMPHAMPHAMP, or WAIFU TIME. This is why I enjoyed the battle scene more than some of the social stuff because when you're in combat you are locked in that scene. It's kill or be killed and you can't fart off and do something else.

If Hamp had arrived at the donut place just 20 story minutes later we could talked this out with Shigure in a neutral setting like we voted to at the end of the previous thread. But nope, gotta keep the thread moving. Planefag has been dropping hints that HATE HAS PROBLEMS WE SHOULD REALLY HAVE TALKED THIS OUT AT SOME POINT, and then we never run into him again and only hear about the stuff he is doing in the background because we voted for waifus again.

Obviously planefag has to do this to avoid writing the quest for 20 years but we could really use some kind of "yarn" tracker because this quest has tons

Okay, but we're also discussing two possibilities that need to be investigated. Whether the Corgis that mauled Shigure did so when Hate was supposed to be supervising them, or if they were ordered to do so by Sammy.

>Honestly, if he can't take it and he's too stubborn to see a shrink himself, and his actions are putting other people in danger, maybe he should be relieved of duty.

In the Real World, they'd have him off the line in a heartbeat. In fact, they'd promote Settle to Rear Admiral and stick him in a very safe desk job somewhere, too. But circumstances - and shipgirls - being what they are, they really don't have a choice.

Settle hasn't fully realized it yet, but he was given the job not just because he's one of the few suited to it... but because if a shipgirl goes loco and rips his head off, he's not irreplaceable. Even dead heroes have their uses, but talented leadership is harder to come by, and four-stars do not grow on trees.

>HEY LOOK SHIGURE'S FUCKING GETTING MAULED BY FUCKING CORGIS

Have you considered for even a second how things would've gone had anon voted to just pass the buck and keep looking for Kongou? Or failing that, leave Shigure alone and round up the more immediate danger? Do you realize which one was the "best" answer? Spoilers: there is no 'best' answer; and rather than write things like a VN with branching paths, with "good ends" and "bad ends" I just write characters reacting in context, like real people would.

Nothing's cut and dried in the real world, and it's a good thing that good writing reflects that, because like you say, the nature of this medium doesn't allow for much else.

The United States has not court-martialed anyone over the rank of Major for either of those things since the Civil War, if we ever did it. Aside from the captain of the Indianapolis.

If we were GOING to, we would have court-martialed General King for disobeying MacArthur and Wainwright's orders and surrendering the USAFFE on Bataan. That is still the single-worst defeat the Army has ever suffered, and the only time an American army has surrendered to a foreign enemy.

But we didn't. And if we didn't court martial him, we're not going to court-martial Settle for not being able to talk down a suicidal girl who had just had him at gunpoint.

I am the FIRST to agree with you OMG IOWA FROM NOWHERE now wait OMG HAMP FROM NOWHERE omg OMG OMG SUB FROM NOWHERE OMG BATTLESHIPS FROM NOWHERE OMGOM GOMG CLIFFHANGER NEXT-TIME ON STRIKE WITCHES etc but the fact that this Shigure thing was going to blow up sooner or later has been very, very well telegraphed, you can't lay that on me. But it's also true that in-character, Settle has every reason and valid defense for not seeing this coming. Technically Shigure isn't even his fucking responsibility! And as the media just revealed, PT boat dogs have a spotty track record in NATO allied nations, too - Hate has a pretty valid defense of his own, here.

The point is that I see anon reacting defensively when shit hits their character, even when they've done a lot better than they realize. There were plenty of characters who pointed out the extenuating circumstances to Settle after the Kaga incident; Settle was his own worst critic, there. The irony is that Settle really does internalize anon's sentiment - if they don't pull off an unrealistic level of success, they consider themselves to have failed, no matter how unrealistic it is for a mere human to achieve the standards they set for themselves.

The problem is you keep dangling side-fires that seem like they have to be dealt with immediately, because if we dont bad shit happens in the background.

Planefag literally posted a thing earlier in the thread of the USS Saratoga firing a missile into the bridge of a Turkish frigate. Nobody got court martialed, and the admiral who ordered the crews to simulate the attack wasn't even punished.

You are vastly overestimating just how much the military cares about friendly-fire incidents.

Not as much as you might think. He has this remarkable ability to admit when he's buttmad, call people stupid in as many words, and then... that's it. That's Crix being buttmad. He seems to move people to paroxysms of fucking rage, sometimes, because he's blunt. He's blunt with me, too. I say X, and he's like "no fuck that, that's fucking stupid." Fuck, he doesn't even like Alice. But that's okay. People don't have to agree on everything. >>
>>42697740
I honestly have no idea what'd've happened because every decision comes with hidden gotchas that came from the background.

I honestly thought Shigure was fine because fuck it she's with a goddamn Heavy Cruiser that seems to like her and by all appearances is a sensible adult and I'm not a history buff so I wouldn't know his seaplanes are fucking madmen (which, btw, is too another example of what I said before about twists. How the FUCK are we supposed to know that shit? It's not even good writing, because it comes out of fucking nowhere, narratively speaking)

Moreover, the sensation of time is "a few minutes", perhaps an hour tops.
How the fuck did things transition from "Shigure & Hamp" to "Corgis on the warpath" in that timespan? Why did Hamp disappear, when by all logic Shigure would be sticking to him like a limpet? Weren't they at the tea party? Where are the other Kongous? Why did nobody try to help? Why is nobody trying to corral the damn corgis? Are ALL the other nip girls completely useless?

It seems clear in your head but it's not so once posted. I'm actually getting kind of pissed off because it feels like you honestly think this is super great natural writing because hey in real life shit happens because if this were real life then there'd be way more opportunities to fix shit WITHOUT a random gas station blowing up while we're going to pick up groceries.

Not that I was in any way in favor of letting her kill herself, but the irony is worth consideration.

>Sometimes the character just has to sit and finish that goddamn paperwork because it's very important for later events.

This is where "plot weaving" comes in; i.e. when you have enough plot arcs hanging unfinished, you can just let one land when you can't pursue the other. The problems begin when you start juggling too fucking many of them. I gave up on trying to finish SWQ in actual quest threads due to sheer realization of how many plot arcs I'd launched, rather than resolved.

I got a lot fucking better at it from the SWQ experience. Still nowhere near "good," but at least "better." Shigure's something I introduced quite early, and in the aftermath of the Bonin Islands, with a kind of "lul" in the whole "War" thing going on, it was time to return to the other stuff. I had to put Shigure AND Hamp and everyone else in there; dangling several potentials so anon could choose one to pursue - and so that no matter which one they went for, they could see the other arcs still advancing or at least present in the background. The world does not revolve around Settle and shit happens behind his back - just look at all the write-ups for exactly what!
>>
>>42697860

>>
>>42697797
I do think anon overreacted, but I won't speak for the rest.
My posts are my view your writing as it stands now. Right now, for example, you pointed out sudden twists during action scenes, in high-tension moments where it's thematically appropriate. They may be overdone, but they're not wrong, per se.

But you also inject sudden twists into slice of life segments to keep the thread lively and the narrative never really winds down, there's no breather. We're always running with our hair on fire and then we do fucking stupid decisions because each plot hook is left half-solved by the introduction of a new one.

Sure. Theoretically. He's a soldier, meant to stand in harms way and take his chances. He can accept that, personally.

But getting your fucking head twisted off by an eldritch spirit that looks like a little girl because you said the wrong thing isn't quite the same thing, and he's going to be rather miffed when he realizes his own chain of command agrees wholeheartedly with his dim assessment of his value. In case you haven't noticed, Settle is, actually, for real, racing from crisis to crisis quite fast. He's been on base nine days, and he's already been in the hospital three times and led his forces in one serious battle-line skirmish and one major carrier battle. Crucial, basic tasks that need doing are constantly delayed as even more severe crisis pop up, most of them resulting from crucial basic tasks that were delayed for a while in favor of a crisis until they also became a crisis.

In short, there's a fucking war on and this is a war story. That's the POINT. If you want a story where characters do not suffer and shit does not go sideways despite everyone's best efforts, GermanSchteel is thataway --->

For fuck's sake you're making me write even more fucking words.

The way you've framed the narrative makes it seem like Settle's the only one competent in the base, Goto notwithstanding given he's busy with his own shit.

Why does nobody connect with Shigure? What about the other luck vampire, Yukikaze? What about Hibiki aka the phoenix aka Verniy aka "I survived the fucking war only to be sold to the fucking russians"? What about Akebono, who's experienced with getting the short end of the stick? (I don't recall if she's actually in the quest, though) Samidare, Suzukaze, Yuudachi, Murasame, Shiratsuyu, Harusame, Kawakaze, Umikaze? Did nobody else of her class show up? All it takes is one person. But nope. Completely alone. Sure, shunning is A Japanese Thing but we're in fucking animeland and isn't it weird how when the others girls are narratively irrelevant they seem to evaporate into thin fucking air?

Kongou front: Yamato is basically useless, apparently! Or maybe some of the other shipsluts. Maybe Ise or Hyuuga? They're chill and Goto could just help "hey could you plz keep her in line kthx". Or her own damn sisters could stop enabling her every single time. Or maybe she's actually sane enough to not fuck up a press conference and why the fuck is this getting framed like a fire in first place I was actually tempted to ask why not just let her be but it'd've gotten drowned out anyways.

There's others but it's 10 to 5am and I have class in the morning so it's too late to dig through the threads for dangling plot threads but the gist of it is that the way you write shit it's like the off-camera's a one-way road: It can only go from "less fucked" to "more fucked".

>>42698071
Oh sure because for ONCE you had someone else step in. And it's on-camera, anyways. Can you honestly tell me Crab would've showed up if we hadn't swung the camera that way?
>>
>>42698153

Goto is at a near-permanent point of burnout because he has to deal with a trillion fucking shipgirls.

>>
>>42698153
If it's a shitty plan that works, it isn't shitty.

Maybe he can have the slack to shape up if we can get our of crisis mode
>>
>>42698161
>why the fuck is this getting framed like a fire in first place

Because it was supposed to be good ol' fashioned fun.

But anon had to go and fuck that up.
>>
>>42698162
Except if he actually had balls and told the girls to TIGHTEN THE FUCK UP, he wouldn't have nearly as many problems.

At the very least Shigure wouldn't attempt a Gomer Pyle and Kongou wouldn't be insane.

Oh, and revealing Arizona's existence to the press without consulting Settle. You know, her nominal CO?
>>
Fuck, I cannot into IRC. I'll have to pursue 'alternate avenues' of discussion with planefag until I can make sense of it all.

>>42698153
Goto is still ALIVE and (semi-)SANE after dealing with more than a hundred shipgirls for more than a year.
A 'shitty' admiral would've said 'fuck it' and given his sidearm a blowjob some time in the first WEEK.
>>
>>42698153
I don't think I would call him bad; just someone ill-prepared for a whole fleet of shipgirls that are headcases. As it is, due to whole Yamato symbolism bullshit, his secetary can't do her job fully and unlike Settle he doesn't have a Hate to lean back on.

if he only had to deal with 3-4, he'd be in much better shape. As you know, opposed to 20+

>>42698161
Honestly if we just left Kongou be and focused on other things, maybe her and Goto would have sealed the deal and stop the cat and mouse that'd hindering his performance.

I'm just going to say, I don't like the "BUT ALL OF THE SHIPGIRLS" argument.

Yes, it's admirable that he didn't suck start one of Yamato's cannons. That doesn't make him a good admiral. If they truly are so bad, he should have had some support.

>>42698178
Didn't you read planefag's remarks, the blowback was coming one way or another. Anon in the course of trying to prevent Kongou hijinks waltzed right into their path. The only way we could have really prevented all this was if we went off the rails hard and addressed them.

>Why does nobody connect with Shigure?

Because they're too busy fighting for their fucking lives. "Operation Starvation" was an air-dropped minelaying campaign launched with B-29 late in the war - it shut down 95% of shipping to the Home Islands in a matter of a few months; including the traffic over the Sea of Japan that was feeding the home islands. Japan couldn't feed itself in the 40s and it can't feed itself now, so you do the math: what happens when monsters go full Pacific Rim on everyone, everywhere, and suddenly you're fighting to keep your lifelines open with your own tiny military and the 7th Fleet (which is cut off from all serious resupply) because your big powerful ally is suddenly fighting desperately to protect their own coastal cities? You tell me, motherfucker, how much time has Goto had to hold their fucking hands? THIS HAS BEEN MENTIONED MORE THAN ONCE IN THE QUEST ITSELF, EVEN.

It's called comedy anon. Kongou is a perfectly functional and competent ship, and her pestering only counts as a fire in a thread that's supposed to be comedy focused.

You need to be brewing alcohol, which requires crops that aren't being eaten or made into meals and being replanted.

The Kongou matter i feel is caused by him having an affliction common to modern japanese men: Spinelessness in the face of women. I think if he were more assertive/etc with her and actually returning her feelings (the hints are there) she might actually calm down enough to be a good aide. And that would make his job a great deal simplier as he'd turn a hinderence to an aiding force.

The only way it could have remained comedy focused is if we had completely tried to ignore the Shigure situation and the Corgis running outside.

Which would have meant a bloodied and suicidal Shigure hiding in a tree.
Probably with a full firefight between her and the PT's before she turned her gun on herself.

I know planefag said he didn't know how things could have turned out, but once he included the Corgis, how could the Shigure situation NOT have blown up?

And if we hadn't, we'd have walked out from our goofy KONGOU DESS! shenanigans funtime to find Shigure either (a) ripped apart by corgis or (b) dangling in a tree with her brains blown the fuck out because nobody was there to help her.

Tonight's thread was a no-win situation, but ignoring the corgi plot thread to focus on Kongou would've been an unmitigated disaster.

It shouldn't be though. At least not the level we're talking about here. Remember, we're talking about someone that was shunned to the point that she was quite ready to commit suicide-by-battleship. That's not something that happens overnight.
And from what it seems like, it's not one or two girls responsible but the vast majority.

That is not okay.

I'm not advocating for, or expecting a zero-tolerance, disobey-me-and-I'll-beat-you policy here. I just think that Goto is a bad admiral for letting himself be a doormat. Or otherwise not asking for/demanding assistance.

I'm curious what the Official Line on shipgirls interacting with surviving crew is. Arizona's first human interaction was with one of hers, similar with Kaga, Willy didn't take any down with her, Sammy's got a survivor's society, Tone's captain was still kicking in the 80s at least, Bat Lead is close enough of a relative to be a strange case, and of course Iowa's a clusterfuck of modern lives.
Probably non-interaction to err on the safe side of things, but still.
>>
>>42698481
People don't just scream out in the fucking cafeteria HEY THAT GIRL IS HERE ERRYBODY DON'T TALK TO HER and it's not like the other shipsluts would actually noticeably stand away from her or completely ignore her during official shit. >And we wasted our best shot at controling it well on a "clever" write in that failed.
Which write-in? I can't be arsed to check back through the threads at this time of night/morning, but the only write-in I remember getting substantial support was "get help to wrangle corgis, we deal with Shigure". Which does not seem to be the point where things really went wrong to me.

I can think of three points where we could've potentially gotten a better outcome:

1) Deal with the corgis when they first appeared, before they got to Shigure. Obvious in retrospect, but at the time I don't think anybody but Planefag was thining the corgis actually posed any significant danger rather than simply another source of zany shenanigans, particularly since the tone at that point was firmly in "zany shenanigans" territory.

2) Have Arizona open fire immediately rather than trying to command the corgis to stand down. But I'm pretty sure that's the option most people would've been least likely to pursue; we don't want to hurt the corgis if we can help it (and it wasn't obvious from the vote options whether shooting at them meant with the revolver or ship guns), and gunfire would've certainly drawn the attention of the press inside leading to a PR disaster.

3) Work with Ari and KTKM to haul Shigure out of the tree rather than climbing up to sweet-talk her. Maybe this is just me being biased because I wanted the "haul her in" option personally, but this seems the one point where the vote yielding better outcomes had a decent likelihood of actually getting picked.

>>42698523
Sensibly yes, but when you get superstitious old men in charge of things....

Must be a SWQ writer/fancircle thing about having incompent leader ship as a "drama preserving" (see SW89)

The main leadership of the base are:
One drunk japanese admiral with a hyper battlecruiser gunning for him.
His sectary who has to be secret squirell to absurd extents, limiting what effectiveness she has.

A us Admiral with a crazy streak, a bad leg.
A hyper competent marine (who above is currently on bad terms with)
An idol cruiser with increasing issues on her end (including drinking)

>>42698538
Thank got it'd not a Tankcolle or it'd be worse (the IJA was the bigger evil by a considerable margin compared to the IJN)

>>42698549
The shouting at them to stop one. Though the three point could have gone that badly or not, though that was the big problem in the thread: people were in a panick assuming other choices would end in disaster.

I'm convinced that one of the three preset choices would have ended well enough to prevent the mauling. It wouldn't have magically solved both things, but it'd have prevented things from going to a clusterfuck.

The double team one could have ended well (better than how the tree choice did), though in the panick, people were assuming the worse.

the first thing is totally hindsight as at the time they were still cute/zany and Shigure was assumed to be at the tea party (overlooking the fact that Hemp wasn't around anymore as he came with or such)

>>42698566
I wasn't really but that might have been another good example as if we were actually nice to her that first time, that would have gone a LONG way towards both preventing the mess and daughteruing her. But NO anon had to be FUNNY. Thus is the problem of a hijinks writer trying to write seriously: his readers are slow to catch on.
>>
>>42698566
Ah. Way back at the very beginning.

Yeah, that was pretty dumb. But, on the other hand, I can't really blame anon for going with it. Had the more serious elements of this quest even been introduced by that point yet? I don't believe they were, and at that point I can understand perfectly why anon would go with the trolly option, assuming this would be similar to SWQ.

Hell, even without that assumption, there's been enough of a trolly shenanigans side to segments of this quest (which, if I'm not mistaken, the scene in which we first found the corgis tormenting Shigure was one such segment) that, given we had no idea about Shigure's traumas until just a couple threads back nor about the potential dangers of the corgis until literally tonight, it makes perfect sense given our understanding at that time to have picked the trolly shenanigans option.

Hindsight is 20/20 (especially when aided by Word of God explicitly commenting on the repercussions of that particular decision), but at the time we had absolutely no reason to suspect that there would be *any* negative blowback at all from that decision, let alone repercusions of this magnitude.

>>
>>42698290
A final comment.
I think you went way too fast with the Corgis development.

Up until this point they have been played mostly as comic relief/cute and obedient, and having the corgis continue to be played as a comical point this would have fit the tone of the thread being zany kongou shenanigans and is probably what every voter expected when we first saw them chasing someone the first time.

Then, in the span of 3-4 updates we have seen them chasing someone, then hear they are violent shits perfectly willing to maul people from the press, and the very next update(s) is them disobeying orders and mauling a suicidal destroyer.

You could have easily kept the comical tone of the thread by having Kongou be the one that screamed, and us finding her chased up a tree by the Corgis, but instead you went for the maximum possible tone shift possible by having it be Shigure, which most of us assumed would be safe at the party which she had just enthusiastically agreed to be taken to by Hamp.

>>
>>42698610
>The shouting at them to stop one.
That wasn't a write-in, that was one of the three pre-set choices.
The Corgis were in fit out, so I fail to see how a cane wielded by a regular human is going to do much damage to a PT boat.

>>42698631
>which most of us assumed would be safe at the party which she had just enthusiastically agreed to be taken to by Hamp.
Hamp had very visibly left the party seeing as he doesn't give any fucks and so was just dumping shit wherever he could find space, and nearly got into a fistfight with a battleship.
Which anons were cheering about, I might add.

So most people assumed something which was completely wrong. That's only anons' fault.

>and thus making an ass out of all of us.
>Never assume a story is the same as the last without explict word of god.

Easy to say in hindsight. And like I said, even discarding the assumption that KCQ would be like SWQ, we had absolutely no indication prior to literally tonight's thread that the corgis were anything other than silly harmless fluffballs (at least as far as their relationship toward our own people).

I think >>42698631 pretty much pinpointed the problem. The issue with tonight's thread wasn't the no-win scenario where the best we can reasonably hope to do is minimize the damage as much as possible, but that the whole shitstorm hinged on the corgis being prone to insubordination and legitimately (not in play, but in earnest) attacking allies. A detail which we had no idea of until literally one update prior to the one where we had to vote on how to deal with the corgis. There simply wasn't enough time to process that new perspective on the corgis in order to handle them properly when we found them bearing down on Shigure. Had we been more properly informed of the issues surrounding PT dogs than merely overhearing a question from a reporter about "safety concerns" (which, even that could very well simply be referring to the same sort of harmless mischief we already knew them for when you get down to it), our response would likely have gone very differently.

(This also raises the question of why we, being an admiral in charge of a big pack of PT dogs, apparently never heard of these dangerous tendencies of such boats prior to that press conference. If Settle the character had, that detail certainly was never relayed to the players for their consideration.)
>>
>>42698684
More like refused to actually read what was posted, or forgot the details very quickly.

Because while Hampton brought Shigure along in his jeep, when we went down to the docks,SHIGURE WAS NOT THERE.
She was not mentioned at all as being with Hampton, or leaving with Hampton when HE LEFT THE GODDAMN TEA PARTY.

All this talk about "Hamp protecting Shigure" or "Shigure should be safe at the party" was all lies.
Because Hampton does not give a fuck. The very same attribute that anons like in him so much is the very same thing that had him drop off Shigure and leave her there alone.
>>
>>42698639
My biggest problem is that there was no time-gap between hearing the Corgis are so dangerous, and having someone mauled by them.

It was quite literally within 3 updates, with no chance for us to do any preventative measures like going and patching things up with Hate, or trying to find someone that control them if that was not possible.

The fact it was Shigure, who we where going to try and help in the previous thread before planefag snatched her from under out nose with Hamp was just pouring acid and salt in the wound.

Also why in the FUCK where we not informed about any "safety concerns" about the corgis when we are the admiral in command of them? The press knows bout it, but we dont somehow?
>>
>>42698779
Personally I don't care about patching things up with Hate. I want him gone. I want his duties given to someone who can handle them and the stress they cause. Everyone's got problems here, but he's the only one that's letting it keep him from performing his duties.
If he gets help or shows he can do his job, I'd be happy to let him go back to his post.
But right now I want him relieved of duty and someone who can at least be bothered to make an attempt at doing their job put in his place.
>>
>>42698758
Regarding that particular detail.
I think there are very few anons who can catch on to that AND predict the possible outcomes within the span of a single run.
In their defense, we had absolutely no idea at the time that Shigure not staying at the party would end up in her being chased by the corgi's and then the ensuing clusterfuck.
>>
>>42698819
>In their defense, we had absolutely no idea at the time that Shigure not staying at the party would end up in her being chased by the corgi's and then the ensuing clusterfuck.
That's a perfectly valid defense, for decisions made at that time.

I'm talking about decisions and posts made afterwards, in this thread and the immediately preceding one, which asked why Hamp didn't protect Shigure, or why wasn't Shigure safe at the tea party.

And frankly, given what we've seen of Hampton, I don't think he even do anything if the girl who's been following him after his departure from the tea party were to suddenly get chased by Corgi's.
>>
>>42698817
This, honestly. Him letting the corgis out to get back at Hate was annoying before, when we thought they were just funny furballs.

But then he went and did that when he knew they were dangerous and had nothing preventing them from going and attacking friendlies? That's not not just gross insubordination, that's fucking criminal. Whatever personal problems he has with Settle do not excuse that in any way. What if they decided they wanted to kill every Japanese person they found? Would Hate just shrug and go "Shoulda let me go to Iwo"?
>>
>>42698752
I said that in more regards about treating a girl that has the misfortune of being the sole survivor and being seen as a jinx. Had our first interaction came after the Kaga fiasco I think people would have thought twice. I remember voting to be nice to her, but it was drowned out in all those votes for the "funny" option.

As far as the thread what you said was correct the moment Planefag saw fit to have that matter come into what was supposed to be a fun thread.

I do agree it was something out of nowhere as this viciousness only shown now, not even in the first thread (where they could have attacked Fubuki easily enough)

>>42698758
Something people didn't think about due to how Hampton went on the Jeep but never came up again in the thread. This allowed some anon to think "it's okay" Just one mistake out of many that made this fiasco.

>>42698779
Planefag did say that not doing anything won... though he should have made it clearer than he did.

>>42698817
Getting people help? THAT APPLIES TO EVERYONE IN THE QUEST. Only difference is that they have different ways of dealing with it or HAVE YET TO EXPLODE.

The sad fact is that there's no one able to take over Hate's position as no one else has his general level of competence. That and Planefag said this was a result of blowing off reconciling with him
>>
>>42693458
"The world calls for war, and we shall answer."

>Thread in general

Wow tonight's been a shit show. So much for the climb back into comedy.

Where this serious train stops! Nobody knows!

>>42698549
That was/is tough I think. I mean you essentially had a hostage situation. Where the hostage is Shigure herself taking herself hostage. Ari cant talk. KTKM had already demonstrated this kind of "not this shit again. get out you pussy" attitude.

>>42698686
That macro image of SWQ comes to mind now.

What I played.

What I expected.

What I got.
>>
>>42698857
We'll have to make a new one for this quest.
>>
>>42698779
The other thing, up until this point in thread the Corgis have been perhaps the only ships that have been steadily dependable.

They saved our asses during the air attack, they silently defended us from Kaga, they caught Harder.

And now we're confronted with the fact that, yes, they are psychotic also and that it took shooting them to drive them off.

Also I'm betting that's how Crab found us, they most likely ran there for repairs and he figured out who they had been chasing...
>>
>>42698849
Honestly I think the problem is that there's just not enough time.

Remember it's been like... a week in quest time. And its been constant crisis point after another. There's no real time to sit down and decompress.

The only one I vaguely remember is debrief with Tenryuu.

I guess its a "problem" in that we havent actually gotten a "You can do everything just pick the order." in a long time if ever.

Not always feasible sure.

But here we are juggling multiple grenades. One of them's gonna explode. Just a matter of time.
>>
>>42698847
>What if they decided they wanted to kill every Japanese person they found? Would Hate just shrug and go "Shoulda let me go to Iwo"?
Hate and Planefag both said, yeah, that's what would happen.
Going by the stories that come out of Okinawa's base, that's exactly what the US military already does.

>>42698849
>That and Planefag said this was a result of blowing off reconciling with him
Okay, so because we didn't reconcile with him, he goes off the deep end and starts doing criminally negligent stuff that gets people hurt.
That's still on Hate for committing those acts.
Sure, some blame could be pointed to Settle and us for not trying to help him. But ultimately Hate's the one who physically dropped the ball on this one.
You can plead insanity but that shouldn't get you completely out of jail.
>>
>>42698849
That vote was before we found out she was getting shunned by the entire IJN shipgirl contingent, and even civilians because of her "unlucky" past.
>>
List of mistakes leading up to this:

Siccing Corgis on Shigure early on
A double wammy as it set up the behavior and started the acceleration of her 'bomb'

Not helping Shigure at the dunkin dougnuts
As a Shigure fan, I think it's safe to say this is our fault and I am personally very sorry about that. If we did step in there we could have started the steps towards fixing her issues... or at the very least stop the 'bomb'

Not reconciling with Hate
Hes' the main man that could get them under control and our most able assistant, the fact we blew off patching things up in favor of "getting the CAC card" (GJ Arifags, GJ). If we did this, then handling everything else would have been easier.

Not stopping the Corigs when we saw that.
Honestly not counting this as HOW WERE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW!?

Not doing something more decisive with the Corgis
A bit of a hindsight thing, but it was effectievly our last shot at preventing the clusterfuck.

>>42698887
Yeah, "realism" in spite of there being so little leadership manpower/etc (which isn't realistic)

>>42698892
We don't know the full story behind why they were running wild; people are assuming Hate did it. And you seem to forget who writes this: Planefag, he who likes writing headcases. That and this is something no sane man would go for and if a sane man did... well he either goes nuts or to the bottle.

>>42698908
That could have been figured out easily if people read her history.
>>
>>42698892
>Hate and Planefag both said, yeah, that's what would happen.
>>42694685
>>42694790
The worst that would happen to the dogs would be them being shipped back to the States.
But if we were to euthanize what are obviously dangerous (to us, to our allies) animals, or made the person responsible for them do it, we'd be the ones sent to prison.

So yeah, the dogs can commit crimes, but if we try to actually punish them, instead of just slapping them on the wrist, we'd be the ones spending jailtime.
>>
So for the next thread: Talk with Hate about the insubordinate corgi problem. Killing allies is NOT okay. Also patch things up with him.

What else?
>>
>>42698934
>Also patch things up with him.
Fuck patching things up with him. Tell him to tighten up or ship the fuck out.
Maybe we'll finally get him to strike a superior officer.
>>
>>42698923
>That could have been figured out easily if people read her history.
>Expecting people to research the backstory of characters
Some will, most don't. Even people like me who have a passing interest in shipsluts specifically because of this quest, HOLY FUCK there is a lot of them. I can barely tell the Kongou sisters apart sometimes.

>>42698934
>>42698945
We BOTH need to get our shit together, or things will get worse.
>>
I did not need this right before my first day of work in six years...

That said, we did our job best we could. We can't solve every problem alone however. I think it's time we had a talk with Goto. We need the support staff in place for this shit and we need to make these girls into a family. Goto is grandpa, we're papa and Hate is the crazy uncle that we need to talk to.

Next thread, no fun. Only business now. Sorry planefag but we're going off the rails.

Oh and decom those corgis and send the organic results to the pound. The egg-heads need research material anyway.
>>
>>42698945
Do you want to fix the problem, or just make it worse?
>>
>>42698923
>That could have been figured out easily if people read her history.

r u srs

I dont like this kind of think here boy.

We dont like this... research thinking. Best be getting on outta here.

More seriously though,

>Siccing Corgis on Shigure early on
I'd argue that would also fall under "How were we supposed to know."

Because at the time it was played off for laughs.

>Not helping Shigure at the dunkin dougnuts
When the waifuing bites back.

Admiral first, people. Our personal feelings will, must, take the back seat.

>people are assuming Hate did it

Probably cause the only person we've seen, or were told about, wrangling em is Hate.

Which is... actually kind of weird, thinking about it now.

You dont give one person several dogs. Hell even one dog if they cant handle it.

And Hate's been herding... what... 30 of em? 30+?
>>
>>42698923
>That could have been figured out easily if people read her history.
I already knew her history because I actually played the shipsluts game.

I did not expect the extent that she was shunned and treated as a social outcast in this setting and how that would fuck up her already existing PTSD and give her outright suicidal tendencies.=.
>>
>>42698934
well making up with Hate would eventually solve the Corgi problem if not other things.

Dealing with the aftermath of the incident (Shoukaku won't be amused, it's clear that Ari wasn't)

Going to Danbooru and looking up their wiki thing is a good way to get an idea.

>>42698972
I didn't either but I figure it wouldn't hurt to be nice though like I said had the first meeting happened after the Kaga incident (making it clear that shipgirls have issues), people might have voted differently.

>>42698983
Looking at the danbooru wiki for her isn't difficult. And US sailors would have had a similar attitude towards a percieved jinx (otherwise there wouldn't be so many habits/etc to this day)
>>
>>42698966
>Not helping Shigure at the dunkin dougnuts
In character we didn't even know that Shigure had a problem being shunned until after the vote to wait and see.
>>
>>42698945
Then enjoy nothing getting done because if you didn't realize Hate basically is the only guy who gets shit done behind the scenes and clean up messes.

This is what happens when you have no Hate, now you want to make that permanent?

Do you want to rely on Crab for everything now?

Or do you stupidly think Settle can handle it all himself?
>>
>Over 1000 posts
wow, it really was that bad.
>>
>>42699011
There was signs of it at the time, don't fucking lie; that just makes you as bad as the Arifags that insistered on going for the CAC card over things like talking to Hate.

This is from a guy who voted to stand by out of the selfish interest of more time with Shoukaku, not realizing my mistake until it was too late. I feel terrible about that.
>>
>>42699016
What has he fixed behind the scenes?
I only know of keeping the Corgi's in line, which he tried to foist off every chance he could get.

If controlling the Corgi's is that important, then we need to find replacements, simply because having a single point of failure like that is a terrible thing to have.
We should be looking for a backup for Hate as one of our top priorities if he's the only one able to keep the Corgi's from attacking allies and civilians, and causing actual damage.
>>
>>42699026
>that insistered on going for the CAC card over things like talking to Hate.
I did that because I considered the CAC card to be more important and valuable, and because I hate Hate and just want him to get that death he so badly wants. If the entire goddamn war effort for this theater is dependent on a single lieutenant, then we have fucked up and need some redundancy immediately.
>>
>>42698964
Fix the problem by removing the source of the problem: Hate.
>>
>>42699039
The date with Shoukaku? He didn't really fix it but did handle the aftermath.

Also:
>The date
>Hanging up on Hate
That turned out great.
>>
>>42699039
beore the big blow up, he was the man to handle other things, lessening Settle's workload.

>>42699051
The whole situaton is fucked up and there's nothing that can be done. Just look at Goto.

>>42699055
That's not really fixing the problem though. The real problem is the rift that blow up had.
>>
>>42699039
He was the one who kept the Corgis off Kaga after she punched Settle.
He saved Settle's ass from a PR disaster in Tokyo
He helped Willie learn her real skills.
He ran all the training for the shipgirls.
He helped some at the Hospital
And he was, up till recently, the closest Settle has had to a friend.
>>
>>42699065
>beore the big blow up, he was the man to handle other things
What things? What events, exactly, did he clean up for us?

Even if it takes an entire company to equal Hate in effectiveness, I'd take the company since Hate is a detriment right now. Because Hate is a single point of failure that let his emotional problems get in the way of doing his job.
>>
>>42699098
So basically you're saying Hate is just as bad as Settle, Crab, and Goto then because all three of them let their emotion issues affect their jobs.
>>
>>42699098
You speak as if Settle isn't doing the same, especially with the recent choices. It's sort of funny how hard you try to make Hate the blame center when the real center of balme is US.
>>
>>42699081
Alright, so he was helpful.
And he was the closest thing Settle had to a friend.

But friendships can die as well as grow, and sometimes it's better to cut them off than to continue to depend on someone with who you no longer want to be a friend.
Because if it's just Hate again, what happens if he goes into another breakdown? What if he gets ill, or wounded.

>>42699120
Yeah, and while they're all considered important, they're also considered expendable. Disposable. Replaceable. We should be looking for a replacement, just as the Chief of Staff likely has a stack of replacements for Settle just ready in case he gets his head torn off by a shipgirl.

>>42699134
Settle is still doing his job. Hate isn't. And Settle knows that he is expendable and that there are procedures in place to replace him. That's why he's a Rear Admiral, after all.
Hate should be treated the same way. A shame to lose, but ultimately replaceable.
>>
>>42699178
But he's not really replaciable as the Navy isn't willing to provide all the men needed to cover his range of abilities. And by not fully addressing things with his subornate, Settle is not doing his job.

Get this into your head: what we have is what we're ever going to get in terms of command manpower. Hate was likely allowed to go with as he'd cause too much trouble elsewhere.
>>
>>42699178
Did you not remember the fact that the Navy isn't appointing just anyone to run ship girl duty? Did you also forget the "Saving Iowa so she could save LA" thing?

See the thing is that as much as Settle wants to go on and on and on about how "Expendable" he is, he's actually not, that's just his stupidity coming out, and neither is Hate.

You can't get rid of Hate, deal with it.
>>
>>42699212
>See the thing is that as much as Settle wants to go on and on and on about how "Expendable" he is, he's actually not, that's just his stupidity coming out
But he is.
That's something that Planefag specifically said is true.
>>42697740
>Settle hasn't fully realized it yet, but he was given the job not just because he's one of the few suited to it... but because if a shipgirl goes loco and rips his head off, he's not irreplaceable.
Of course the Navy has to use Settle and Hate, and they're willing to put up with a lot of their shit so that a more important person doesn't have to go. But they're still replaceable.
>>
>>42699212

To add to what >>42699251 said, keep in mind what Settle's rank is, and that even he realizes he's being given more power than he really should.

It all comes down to him being very, VERY replaceable, regardless of the useful skills he has.

Truth be told, I think some of the higher ups fully expect one of the shipgirls to do something stupid and seriously harm or kill Settle.

It would give them all the reasons they needed to harshly crack down on the girls and remove any freedoms they currently have, as well as any hope the shipgirls might have for any sort of life during a post-war period.

It would be far too easy to label the shipgirls as weapons shown unsafe to police and otherwise stop themselves from violence, pointing toward their disregard, disrespect, mental instability, and eventual harming/killing of Settle.
