Kingom overview: http://pastebin.com/46nxmQGp

This is a quest inspired by the game, Long Live the Queen. The setting is fantasy medieval with magic. You play a princess attempting to rule a small, unimportant kingdom rise back to the glory of former past. The only problem being, you are COMPLETELY USELESS and CLUELESS as you have been spoiled as a child. It is up to you to quickly learn and overcome the easy life that has hampered you. Whether becoming a charismatic queen that draws heroic servants to your cause, a battle-leading amazon conquering land, or a foolish bumbling tyrant is all up to you.

The game is not harsh like Long Live the Queen where everything can kill you and end the game. It is however imperative to think about the consequences of your actions and decisions. Too many mistakes may cost you reputation, friends, the love of the people, and maybe even your rule. All in all however, common sense is a fortuitous guide.

And remember that is sometimes better to play through consequences for the sake of story, character, and roleplay that just trying to win something.

And what art thou, thou idol ceremony?
What kind of god art thou, that suffer’st more
Of mortal griefs than do thy worshippers?

---------------------------

Previously you managed to chat and keep the nobles of your kingdom content on the day you came to rule. You overviewed the basic of your kingdom, hired a mage named Rorona, got your lord cousin to join, and implemented an open court system where the commoners may visit you for petitions.
>>
A week passes from the day you started your duties as ruler and you find yourself in a good routine. On the morn you train with Rorona and work your magics, now delving in to creating shields and barriers to support others. At times you find both of yourselves clumsily failing but still getting along quite fine and enjoying yourselves. Rorona might not be the best tutor or expert, but a friend might prove more useful in the future.

During noontime you spend your time listening to petitions and word from the populace. Word has gotten out of your open court and you receive daily numerous visitors. Most of the time it is small complaints and sometimes just ramblings where hearing out the petitioner is enough to satisfy them. Still, it can be hard and strainful at times to be sitting straight all day addressing people for hours.

For now you have not implemented any policies or laws, nor have you spent money building anything. If you want to see your kingdom grow perhaps you should start taking bigger actions. What do you do?

You remember that very little trade happens around your kingdom. From what little information you have garnered, your kingdom trades away barley, wheat, and some fish as the main source of income. Even to someone who knows nothing about business and trade it sounds dull to you.

What can be done to improve trade? As you rack over your brain, you see Tammy take a peek over your papers.

"Eh? Improving trade?" she says when you ask her for any ideas. "Errr... Well," she says scratching her head. "Maybe you could create a new commodity to trade. You know, pottery, art, other types of food... I'm not sure. Maybe you can look at other kingdom? Or how about asking Lord Raymund"

What do you do?

Maybe he'll know someone that knows someone that knows of someone that has an idea of someone that possesses a really awesome idea but just needs the capital to look for someone who has the idea that he needs to sell you.

Just maybe.
>>
"Ahhh... My cousin. I have not even had a chance to speak with him. Can you call him for me?" you ask of your maid who nods and leaves the room.

A few minutes pass and Raymund enters the office, clasp in his white coat and cape with the sword you previously saw ever at his waist. You take a better look at your cousin' a lanky, somewhat tall man. His facial expression always seems serious if not slightly sullen. Perhaps it's just the way he is.

"You called Lady Ornesia?" he asks with a slight bow.

You've called him to for some advice, but perhaps you should take the time to chat?

"How have you been faring Lord Cousin," you ask. "Are the accommodations suitable?"

"Quite fine," he replies. "The castle is a tad small but I do not any grandiose place to live. However," he says looking around.

"However...?" you ask.

"Perhaps you should consider redecorating and making it bigger; more for the nobles and to make an impression. People are swayed by impressions of power and the finicky nobles love the idea of wealth. But then again we may have more important matters on hand..."

"Yes," you say with a nod. "Actually it is why I called you here Lord Cousin. I've conducted an overview of our city and kingdom... And well, it seems there is much work to be done. Too much," you say with a chuckle.

"I see," he says with a nod. "What do you have in mind right now?"

"I was hoping to improve commerce," you say. "As of now our kingdom is unknown and our markets are small. Caravans rarely come here. Tammy suggests making a commodity... But do you have other suggestions?"

Raymund places a hand on his chin as he speaks.

"A commodity can be a good idea. East Windhor for instance thrives solely for the sugar they grow and sell," Raymund replies. East Windhor? Probably another kingdom.

"But other than that we can improve our roads, we can send emissaries to other kingdoms to open new avenues of trade, we can hire men to spread news and stories of our land to attract visitors. All of this of course costs money. Building roads require funds, typically it is custom to send gifts to emissaries, we obviously need to hire talented bards to spread news of our lands.

Frankly, anywhere would be a good start," he says lowering his hand.

>should we be using up our treasury?

"I think building roads then might be a good start," you say. "How do our current roads look?" you ask.

"We have but a few dirt paths to our city and a few of our villages. If we could expand the roads further to the other outlying villages, then further to other territories, perhaps install guard posts to keep travelers safe, we could see more caravans and trade come to our area. This is of course a long process... To instill roads to our outlying villages on the countryside, I would think we need to expend 300 gold from our treasury. Another 300 if we want to expand further to other territories, and 200 gold if you want to instill guard posts. For now I would recommend just the first part.

>expand just to outlying villages (300)
>build roads to other kingdom territories (300)
>build guard posts (200)

"And for commodities?" you ask. "Do you have any ideas?"

"Unfortunately, no," Raymund replies with a shake of his head. "Perhaps the populace knows more. If you were to ask merchants around you might get a good idea. I hear you have already met with some of the common people... Did any of their sayings interest you?"

Do we have any sort of survey data? Any stories from around the kingdom? Maybe daddy gifted us some gems quarried or cut some where near by?

And with magical stuff i mean things like:
Spells, trinkets, enchanted items, enchantment for items, magicaly researching new things to use and sell, teaching of magic and so on.
Basically we're attracting merchants to come here to either buy magical things or normal people who want to lear magic/see a magical focused city.
>>
>>42706397
We have 1 novice wizard anon. no one would buy anything right now.
>>
>>42706412
This is more like a long term thing starting off with recruiting/bringing in more mages and giving them monetary support to expand and create buisnises in town and then market growth, expansion, market stuff etc...
>>
>>42706481
This is a right now thing anon, as in what will be our commodity right now.
>>
>>42706488
Not really though, i mean we're already expanding the road and therefore bringing in a little more trade which means we're gaining an ok sum at the moment, that means we can take it slow and build up something that will last longer rather than just something quick.
>>
>>42706561
We'd still have only 1 wizard and no incentives to bring more magicians to the kingdom. It's not feasible in the short or midterm.
>>
>>42706584
We have ways we could encourage mages to move here, one thing would be laws which would make it favorable for a wizad to stay, another would be promise of monetary support for researc and development or other advertisement to encourage it.
>>
>>42706622
>one thing would be laws which would make it favorable for a wizad to stay
For one spelling, two not a lot of wizards are going to move even for a tax break. We'd be getting apprentices and the like, meaning scrubs. Your average wizard is loaded after all.

>another would be promise of monetary support for researc and development or other advertisement to encourage it.

Good ideas, if we had a way to sustain it. We don't. Our economy is bleh and until we get some better trade going that sort of commitment will bankrupt us on the scale your looking for.
>>
>>42706665
Alright, we can do something else for now then. Though it's maybe a thing to keep in mind for later.
>>
For a brief moment, a magical idea fills your head. A glorious kingdom of magics and wizards. A city with tall white towers where the most famous of magicians come to seek knowledge and conduct research. And at the top of it all, on the throne, Princess Linette the Lady of Love and Peace ruling harmoniously with subjects all bowing in gratitude.

You start drooling a little.

"Lady Ornesia?" Raymund's voice snaps you awake from your blissful daydream.

"Eh? Oh, yes," you say with a nod. "Then we will build roads to outlying villages for now and save the rest of our treasury. And to build our commodity... I should pay a visit to the merchants. Perhaps they would have a good idea."

"Quite so," Raymund replies with a nod. "If your ladyship is present, merchants may flock to you for their ideas and ask for investments. Will you be checking it yourself? If so, you should make certain to bring about guards."

"Fantastic, why don't you come with me then?" you say rising from your seat. It was likely due past for an inspection around the city anyway.

"Erm..." Your cousin seems hesitant. "I think I should get back to my duties."

"What, paperwork behind the desk? A breath of fresh air would do better," you retort. "Besides, surveying the lands would be part of your job, no? I would be much more comfortable with your opinion on the side as well."

Raymund rubs his neck and lets out a tiny sigh.

"...Alright then," he relents.

The two of you grab a small retinue of guards, four in total to accompany you outside. The drawbridge over the castle is lowered and you begin heading towards the city.

It's the first time you have been out in a long time. Looking around the city you see that your kingdom is peaceful; though small and little signs of activity. The brisk sun and small breeze brushing the grass gives off a peaceful feeling.

Raymund walks by your side.

"...Lady Onresia," he says quietly. "Forgive me if this is too personal. But how have you been feeling since your father's passing," he asks in a small uncomfortable manner, as if asking you might hurt you.

The sound of your boots thumping at the bridge stops as you hold your pace for a moment. You look across the sky and make a sad smile as you fold your hands behind your back.

"Truthfully, it still troubles me from time to time," you say softly. "Sometimes at night I still dream of him. His kind smile and touch. And the memories of him by my bed, reading me a story to sleep will never go away. His death came all to sudden for me..."

A small wind passes and your hair flutters slightly.

"Linette..." Raymund can only mutter.

"But I have my duties now, right?" you say with a smile looking back at your cousin. "I decided I could not stay depressed forever and I am going to keep fighting every day. For my father and my kingdom; that is what he would want."

You begin to walk again. Saying no more, Raymund follows suit. The two of you walk in silence for a time until you reach the markets of the city. The activity here is small but you hear the day-today business of vendors calling out their wares and see housewives purchasing groceries. You are greeted by a vendor selling fruits.

"Oh! The Princess is here!" he says waving his hand. "What an honor m'lady. Would you care for an apple? Or a peach perhaps? No charge of course!"

Though you aren't hungry, basic courtesy tells you to accept the fruit. You take a peach from the vendor and take a bit from the fruit. Soft, juicy, but not cold and with cream as you would have back in the castle. Still, you smile and nod.

"Delicious," you say to the vendor. The vendor makes a hearty laugh.

"Thank you, it's an honor. Now surely you didn't come to buy fruits from this measly old man," the vendor says jokingly.

"Ahh yes," you say with a nod. "I actually had a few questions..."

You talk to the man if there is a commodity you can start creating in Seraphia so that the land will attract most visitors and trade. The vendor is quite surprised by your notions, stating it has been the same way here for so long he couldn't possibly imagine a new thriving city.

"Well m'lady, I would say a food commodity would be the best," he says. "Things like spices are always the rage of traveling merchants. Things that people taste are always on the bloom." He rubs his chin, thinking for a moment. "Well how about... Wine?" the merchant says.

"Wine?" you ask.

"Yes, wine is something the rich always must have on parties and dinners. Wine is also popular with the middle class. It's an item that people consider a sign of wealth and class. And so much can be done with wine, like adding fruits, nuts, herbs... I don't think any other cities on Lucedonia carry strong brands. Sure there are famous ones here and there, but there is opportunity for more..."

"What would it take to make such a commodity?" Raymund intervenes.

"Well we don't really have orchards around here. I would think you would need to start some plantations first. Then you would need to find a company or make yourself some breweries to start production. Then once you make the delicacies you would need to send them out and advertise them. After that it's a matter of how well you made the wine and how much people love them I suppose..."

You remember that there are still lots of unused farmlands in the city. You could grow orchards and then find a local company or build some breweries as recommended. You would of course have to spend gold and calculate it back at the castle...

You thank the merchant for his advice and begin to walk around the city some more. As you go through the stalls you run in to a familiar face.

"Oh! Lady Ornesia!"

It's Hugh the fisherman, the one you had given money to on the first day you opened court for petitions. He quickly bows to you multiple times. You smile back to the fisherman and ask him how he has been faring.

"Very good Lady Ornesia! Thanks to you our ship has been repaired and new hulls and decks have been added. My boys and I have been going out and hulling back bigger catches! You wouldn't believe some of the tuna we've been catching!"

That reminds you. Back at court the fisherman had mentioned some of the things he could possibly catch.

"Ahhh... I remember you saying there were some islands with crabs?" you ask. You remember well that crabs are a good, even expensive delicacies.

"Why yes," Hugh replies. "I have not tried yet however. Crab hunting can be difficult and for whatever blasted reason they tend to be around the dangerous heavy waters. A lot of people like to avoid dangerous work."

You talk to Hugh and ask him if it is possible to start collecting them and placing them in the market. Hugh nods to you.

"Aye Lady Ornesia. But like I say it can be dangerous work. The Bluefish and I would be willing to give it a try, but I don't think one ship can hull in so many to sell in the outgoing markets. Most of the fishermen around these parts keep safe and clear. If you're going to want them to start collecting crabs... You should give them some incentives. Payment, some tax cuts..." he says.

"If perhaps you would set an example for the other fishermen," Raymund steps in. "Others would be willing to try."

"True," Hugh replies with a nod. "Lady Ornesia if you want to try this little expedition, give me a call. We owe you a debt and we would be willing to help."

Southern, northern, or a vague "English " climate?

Unless its southern, wine isn't the best choice. Grapes like warm, semi dry climates, at least the stains here.

We could do mead and ciders. The bees would help bolster the trees, as well as any crops we plant near them. Honey can also be reduced into sugar, but that's not as cost effective as mead. If we decided to make sugar, we could dispute the monopoly on it.

With your investigation done, you and Raymund head back to the castle and begin the checks and balances on implementing the plan. The drafting takes some time you realize these kinds of things are much more complicated than you initially thought. Finding the farmers willing to start the orchards, clearing land, getting the right supervisors...

Overall it seems that building the orchards and then the breweries would take 500 gold in total. As for the crabs investment, you could give a tax break which will reduce some of your income or distribute 100 gold towards the fishermen to encourage them to venture out.

"Either plan sounds good," Raymund inputs. "Even both if you wish."

"Ehhhh..." you moan lying your head down on the table with your arms spread wide like a small child.

"Lady Ornesia..."

You quickly get back your composure and sit back up. It seems having spent the entire day with your cousin has thoughtlessly made you act casual in his presence, much as you would act with Tammy. You brush off the slight embarrassment.

"Y-Yes, what is it Lord Cousin?"

Raymund fixes his posture and crosses his legs form his slouched position, indicating he's back to his serious demeanor.

"As you may have noticed, our military is rather weak," Raymund says. "We only command 500 soldiers. A small number compared to other kingdoms. In fact, the nobles houses command a 100 or so soldiers themselves. The troops also lack discipline, weaponry, and the like." Raymund shifts his position and places his elbows on the table.

"I say this because Seraphia has always been weak. In the past it has even sent tributes to other kingdoms to remain safe. The nobles here have had power for some time. Frankly, I do not like it," Raymund says with a shake of his head. "...I want our kingdom to be stronger. Strong enough to fend for ourselves should we ever lose the support of the nobles. Strong enough to defend ourselves if our kingdoms threaten us. Not a backwater land that is swayed under pressure easily."

You are slightly surprised by Raymund's statements. As of now you have completely been focusing on obtaining support of the people... But what if a time comes when that is not enough?

"I am not saying we should raise a large army or anything," Raymund continues. "But I am hoping in the future we could increase our soldiers. Discipline them. Make sure they have proper equipment. Hire generals and warriors that will serve the Ornesia name faithfully."

The prospect of military and war frighten you slightly, especially with your initial goal to create a kingdom based on love and support from the people. But even you understand to just get through without power sometimes is a naive idea. You nod ever so slightly.

"I agree. I will keep thoughts on our military in the future," you say.

"Good," Raymund says rising from his seat. "I say these things, but do not trouble yourself too much. I think our kingdom remains peaceful yet and the noble complacent. We can slowly build ourselves and take things accordingly. Now if you will excuse me..." Raymund bows. "I shall be returning to my quarters."

Your cousin is dismissed and stretching from your table as well, you ask Tammy to prepare a bath and to sleep.

Another day you receive a visitor from one of the nobles. Jean Hill, a young man in his twenties is paying courtship to you. You hear is of a somewhat prominent house owns a few acres of farmlands. Tammy speaks with you.
“Well… This was bound to happen Lady Ornesia,” she says. “You’re a princess after all. I think you will be receiving suitors and those attempting to woo you for quite some time. Marrying in to a noble family might be good but…” Tammy scratches her head. “It feels kind of weird seeing you hitched, yeah?”

What do you do?
>perhaps marrying is a good idea?

No reason not to at least see him, if they own farmlands, might even work something out about that wine.

+1. It's our duty to get married eventually but we must pick wisely.

The thought of marriage also puts you off. Most other ladies of prominent families are taught that they will marry a man and serve as a bridge between families, but your father never prepped you nor made you take that route. It is perhaps another good memory you have of your father.

Basic etiquette requires you to meet with the suitor however. You understand to just refuse someone outright is like a slap in the face. You tell the guards to allow the suitor to enter.

A man walks in, dressed in fine velvet clothing. He is actually... Quite handsome now that you take a look at him. Sleek blonde hair, strong jawlines, soft skin. He goes over to the throne and presents you with a bouquet of roses as well as giving a kiss to your hands as is proper etiquette in these noble customs.

"Greetings to you Lady Ornesia, I am Jean Hills," the man says. His voice is also quite nice. Strong but soft. "Do you fare well today? You look quite beautiful in this warm day."

How do you feel?

Despite your rejection of thoughts on marriage, you are still a budding girl and the handsome man makes a little tick in your heart. The warm smile, dress, cologne, and the compliments he gives you are quite flattering. If all other men are like this you think perhaps you could accept a suitor, at least some more courtships and visits.

Your nose turns a little pink and you feel slightly flushed but you do your best to remain composed and dignified.

"Thank you Jean Hill. How fares your father?"

"Quite fine..."

There is about a twenty minute exchange of pleasantries, small talk, and polite conversation between you two. When the courting is done Jean Hill bows to you.

"Now then, if you will keep but an ounce of thought of this unworthy man, it would be the greatest happiness. I have always admired you since I was a child. Please, have a good day m'lady."

Jean Hill leaves politely. He does not mention marriage, likely not wanting to come off strong and has done the proper courtships. You wipe a small bead of sweat after all that.

"Ehehe... Others may have not noticed, but I could see you were embarrassed," Tammy says chuckling with a hand placed on her mouth and a mocking tone.

You smack her and tell her she will be the target on the next magic training.

What now?

Raymund said that the troops are in pretty bad shape, inspection could at least raise morale a bit.

You decide to look over the current laws of your kingdom to familiarize yourself. Right now the basic laws are:
-Theft is a minimum 2 year sentence
-Murder is a sentence for life
-Treason against the crown is a death sentence
-In times of war, all able bodied male aged 16 and above can be called to service
-Vassalage: Those of noble houses swear duty to the crown and will defend it in times of war
-Aristocracy: Those of noble birth are allowed in court to petition and speak with the crown

It's a bit hard to fully understand the consequences of these measures to you, but perhaps you want to change something or implement a law? Or will you leave things as they are?
>>
>>42713284
No laws on succession?
>>
>>42713284
Leave as they are
>>
>>42713292
-The successor to the throne is chosen by the king/queen and the successor must be of royal blood. In the case of no called successor, the eldest of direct blood succeeds
>>
>>42713327
Our cousin is the current heir then correct?

>>42713352
No. He is not directly blood related to your father.

You were always chosen to be heir and by right you are the ruler.

No implementation of any law, or changes?

If so, do you rest for the day or spend some time doing something else?
