Welcome to Siberia. The time is late morning, the weather is cloudy, and the date is January 21.

You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 telekinetic ‘superhero’ and you were busily trying to coordinate your next job. Earlier in the weekend, a portal had opened up in School District 10. While this was not a real cause for concern, your friends, Touma, Kaoru, and Kyouko had gone missing. You had found two of the three on the other side, which had led you to Russia. They weren’t the only ones you found however. In their presence were Teacher’s followers, Asuka’s uncle, Ilija and Irina. They were in Russia in a way to try and contain a Code M incident. Since Kyouko was still missing and the prime suspect was a supposed Magic God Ollerus you had cut a deal with them. In exchange for helping them, they would help you track down your friend. That they needed Touma to help was simply a happy coincidence.

His right hand was the solution to the rampaging Angel. Getting close was tricky, as the Russian military had found out. Your plan then was to take advantage of their presence. Delivering Touma to the target required something that could fly fast, high, and with great agility. Right now as the group as a whole were divvying themselves up in to two teams. One was going to be the diversion and it consisted of Asuka’s uncle, Asuka herself, Ilija, Irina, Kyousuke, and Sparky. The rest were the infiltration team. As you were the one running the show, so to speak, you had yet to pick a team. While you could be undoubtedly useful as part of the infiltrators, you didn’t think the Russians wouldn’t be able to recognise you as Academy City’s pet cyborg. At best it would prolong the war, at worst, escalate it.

You left with the infiltration team. You didn’t ask where Asuka’s uncle had gotten such old uniforms, and in your size no less, but you were grateful that you still had your ‘civilian disguise’ with you. While the cap was a definite red flag, the sunglasses were less suspicious. The only ones without a uniform were Touma and Kaoru. They certainly wouldn’t fit the disguise due to their forms, even bundled up as they were. The only one that could even be considered in disguise was your mother. She had been part of the Russian military at some point in her life. Thus you took the lead from her.

The airfield was one of the smaller ones, as far as your mother could tell. Parked in makeshift hangars and lots were aircraft of different shapes and sizes.

“There’s the Antonov,” your mother would point out, “Over there is the helicopter pool. Strange, it doesn’t look like they’re here for the long term.”

Your group was coming up on the base from a ridge. From the observations your mother had made you too were wondering at the organised chaos below.

“They aren’t resupply the artillery pieces, they’re loading them up,” she continued, “I can’t see too many anti-aircraft emplacements either.”

“That or they’re well hidden,” Sagara added.

“Then let’s not draw too much attention when we grab a ride,” you finally said.

According to Asuka’s uncle, there had been few refugees from around the region. Given that Siberia was rather remote it wasn’t populated enough to warrant a full-scale evacuation plan. A few natives and tourists weren’t that unexpected, especially when they had accidentally stumbled upon AO.

“So, how are we going to get in?” Touma asked.

Good question, it was probably a good idea to,

The uniforms weren’t so shabby that they wouldn’t pass muster from a casual inspection. However, if anyone bothered to investigate, certain strange details would pop out. Things like, “Why does this pilot wear an eye patch?” or, “Did we actually have a bleached blonde on base?” Thus it was best to not try to draw any official attention as it were. Thankfully there was a civilian holding area. It wasn’t too hard to purposefully stride in the direction of that building after discretely ‘hopping’ the fence. Touma only got caught on the barbed wire twice. As expected, nobody on site batted an eye at your impromptu congregation though your mother did turn a head or two. It helped that you had traded in your Sig for an AK.

Of course, that was when the explosion went off in the distance. Well you had expected it. Even from this far, you could see a rising plume of smoke and random crackling in the distance. At once the personnel stirred. Rifles and vehicles both came to life as the diversion team did what they did best. Your group as a whole started running then, first to catch up to the dozen or two amount of civilians that were being evacuated and then on to the next Antonov ready to take to the air. Given the increasing frequency of distant explosions and gunfire it wasn’t like you were picky about your transport but it certainly would have avoided the crew master problem.

“Who are you?” he had asked.

The plane was starting to raise its ramp as if moved. There were what, four, maybe five guards discounting your mother and your disguise, inside the plane. The rest of the plane had been taken up by cargo leaving a cramped battlefield that was soon going to leave the ground.

It wasn’t immediately obvious but you had realised CASIE had translated for you. While you could speak maybe a word or two of Russian it wouldn’t be enough to save you in this case. Thus you had to hope your mother could come up with a convincing enough lie.

“These two just came in this morning,” she gestured to your two undisguised friends, “paperwork wasn’t done when.”

She gestured outside.

“Fair enough,” he grunted, “And him?”

He was asking about Sagara who was doing his best to look distracted.

“He was a pilot they saved,” she went on, “Lost his eye and impaired hearing.”

The crew master almost flinched and shook his head pityingly. That was the kind of damage that ended careers. Not that Sagara was incapable of flying a plane. Briefly, you wondered if it was a good idea to let your Cyclops friend fly in the first place. Still it got him to back off from inquiring further as the plane lifted off the ground. It was surprisingly quiet considering you could hear the sound of battle below you. The plane banked sharply after it ascended for a good five minutes. Apparently it was heading east, away from the current battle and avoiding the ‘monster in the sky’ as it were.

You had to act soon before you got too far out for fuel to not matter. There were only three guns between you, your mother, and Sagara. The other soldiers were spaced about the plane in their seats away from the cargo. You signalled to Sagara who moved to look out one of the few passenger viewports that were on the plane. You let the AK rest on its sling as you opened up your jacket and took a seat. The familiar baseball cap was within reach. You only had one shot at taking everyone one by surprise and it was important that pilots would not get a mayday out. As your mother’s conversation died down, she turned to you, no doubt waiting for the next step. You told her to take out,

He was an isolated target and thus you got your mother to take care of him first. She turned around and you didn’t know what she did. The next thing you know the man was on the ground convulsing. She shouted for a medic. There were two, but the one farthest away from you got up first. The one closest was the first to go. Everyone had turned their head towards the rear of the plane when you pulled out your mask. A soft hiss later and you were up and gunning down the soldiers. They had been taken by surprise and CADRE did it’s best to ensure minimum collateral damage. The last one raised his rifle towards you before Sagara put a bullet in his head from behind.

“Everyone get down!” your mother shouted.

Sagara took the time to break in to the cockpit. Two more gunshots rang out, as did several cries from the civilians in the cargo hold. You swept the AK around the assembled to make a point. You also instructed Kaoru and Touma to go find some parachutes. Your mother on the other hand kept talking on the planned diversion and assuring that all non-combatants will not come to any harm. Once done, she left to help Sagara make sense of the Russian controls.

“So much for the laws and customs of war huh?” Touma remarked.

“If it makes you feel any better, think of this as a special forces operation,” you replied.

The plane banked sharply to the side once again before levelling out. Your mother returned to report on the good news. The diversion team was successful in drawing away the Russians and destroying a good chunk of local radar and radio installations as well as their helicopters. Consequently your current vehicle would be the only suspicious thing in the airspace. The Russian air force was going to come knocking and by then you’d have to hope they weren’t going to shoot on sight. You looked over the civilians huddled together in fright.

You immediately discarded the decision to take them hostage. There once was a time where the Russians were involved in a hostage situation and came out with more casualties than there were hostage takers without a single loss on their side. You weren’t keen on a repeat of that. Killing them wasn’t exactly palatable either but it would just save you some trouble.

“Everything alright?” Touma asked.

He was nervous. You could tell he was only trying to make conversation to take his mind off of jumping out of a plane. There was a story there, you were sure.

“Kaoru will keep you safe,” you answered.

“I hope so,” he frowned, “I didn’t enjoy the last time I did this.”

There was definitely a story there. Before you could get it out of him the ramp started to lower, letting in the chill northern atmosphere. You pretended Touma wasn’t clinging to you when your mother said,

“We’re as close as we can get.”

The plane banked sharply bringing the Angel in to view. It was silhouetted by the cloud layer you were in but even then it was fucking huge.

“I have to grab on to that?” Touma was incredulous.

Kaoru nodded stiffly. Then she grabbed him by the hand as started to lead him off. You gave him a few reassuring words,

“At least it’ll be hard to miss.”

He didn’t look reassured as Kaoru jumped, pulling him with her. As your mother went to tell Sagara to break off, you began stripping the dead soldiers of their equipment. You were tempted to simply to dump them but decided against it. If you weren’t going to harm the civilians you might as well be respectful of the dead. You laid them together and draped some tarp over them. Your mother would take care of the blood as you joined Sagara in the cockpit and dumped off the loot.

“We have a problem,” he said as soon as you stepped inside, “Fighters are closing and fast.”

“Let’s not risk getting shot down then, put her down fast and hard.”

“Da kapitan.”

He probably pushed the stick down hard as you were stepping out of the cockpit. Git.

“Something wrong Kyril?”

“Enemy fighters,” you replied, “We’re making an emergency landing.”

There was nothing in the cargo that was going to help with transportation. There were a few long range radios but those actually required a proper setup. That ran under the assumption that the Russians wouldn’t be able to listen in. Even in the dive you could feel the plane rolling from side to side. The cargo ramp was still down and you caught sight of Sagara dumping flares. Something exploded shortly thereafter. You felt superbly reassured in your decision making. Then something hit the right wing. You looked out the small porthole. Yep, the engine was on fire. That was one half of all the engines and a smaller part of the right wing gone.

The plane banked right without turning. Sagara must have fought with the little amount of control that he had left. There was no time like the present to get strapped in along with the rest of the passengers. You watched as the ground came closer through the cargo ramp. The plane lurched to the other side. Your stomach jumped up in to your throat as contact with the Earth was made. The plane shook, rumbled, and screeched as if in pain before slowly, eventually, coming to a stop. It was then you realised the screeching and screaming had been of the passengers.

Sagara stepped out unruffled.

“Sorry about that last one,” he said unapologetically, “I think that last missile was fired from a helicopter because I sure didn’t see it on radar.”

“Doesn’t matter,” you freed yourself, “We need to get to the rendezvous. How far away do you think we are?”

“Maybe at least fifteen kilometres away. We’re close enough to the forest but I don’t fancy outrunning a gunship if we don’t leave now.”

There was no time to waste. You slung as much equipment as you could on your person as your mother and you climbed out of the wreck of the aircraft.

The time is afternoon, the weather was picking up again, and the date remains unchanged.

Despite the howling wind you could pick up the distant thump-thumping of a helicopter’s blade. It was moving closer as the three of you sprang quickly in to the forest. Obviously Sparky must have missed one of them, or they must have gotten lucky. Regardless, you weren’t able to shake the feeling that the chopper had a bead on you. The ground ahead erupted in a line of spraying snow. Yeah, they definitely had a bead on you. It didn’t stop the three of you from ducking behind whatever cover you could find.

The chopper circled over head like a shark for a while, placing machinegun fire around your cover without actually hitting you. They also must have had you on thermals with the way the shots were deliberately paced. It was a warning then. From cover you could see it opening up to disgorge its troop complement. You weren’t going to let it. Quickly switching off your limiter, you swat at it violently. The Hind didn’t crash but it was enough to destabilise it as it pitched backwards in to a tree. While there were three or four already on the ground, the rest were probably thrown from the out of control aircraft or crushed by the resulting crash. You were just about to turn your limiter back on when somebody opened fire on Sagara’s position. Your mother popped out to return fire but then she was gunned down from another direction. She would eventually get up but it had you reconsidering your tactical situation.

The Hind must have dropped off most of its troops as it circled around you. Smart but it they didn’t count on going up against VERDICT, especially when they’ve hurt your mother.

Your reason for keeping the limiter off was because that rebooting the VERDICTOS would take too long. At least that was what you kept telling yourself as you carved a trench from the force you outputted. It snapped some of the younger trees as the soldiers leapt out cover to avoid it. With your targets in sight, you grabbed and tossed them one by one in to the air. That was only four of them though but you knew they would be hard pressed to survive the landing without injury.

You took a round in the chest, several of them in fact. It felt like a hammer blow, your body reflexively curling up on the ground as you coughed in to your helmet. While you were thankful for the ballistic vest it probably wasn’t designed for such abuse. You spotted the shooter as he peeked out to confirm the kill. He probably didn’t expect to go flying at you as raised an arm. His ribs gave in on impact as your hand exploded out his back, a steamy and barely beating heart in your hand.

Now you were protected by a literal meat shield as you scanned for more targets, ignoring the sting of injuries about you. Sagara was bleeding from one of his arms. It was most likely a graze as he had enough presence of mind to return fire with a pistol. You picked them out from the muzzle flash, yanking their guns from their hands. Those that held on were dragged out in to the open where Sagara put them down. That was seven down, there should only be one left. You couldn’t see him but it looked like your mother did. A rope of Code M controlled blood whipped out from her and skewered a tree and the man behind it. He was dead by the time you saw him slump to the side out of cover.

Quiet settled in once more and you turned off your limiter. CADRE was estimating a drop in overall combat efficiency from damage to your ribs. Breathing was slightly harder and your chest felt constricted for sure. Still you were alive. Sagara caught a flesh wound on his right arm but he should be fine given that he started to treat the wound immediately after the fight was over. Only your mother had appeared to remain unscathed. The rounds that had buried themselves in to her were now on the ground around, and more importantly, outside of her.

The whole engagement had lasted under a minute by your estimate. Taking another five to gather yourselves together, you were then surprised by the arrival of a very familiar halftrack. Well that was good news at least.

“Torikov-san, Aniki,” Sparky jumped out first as she headed your way.

“We’re okay,” you replied, “Everything went okay.”

“I can confirm that,” Asuka’s uncle joined you.

The rest had disembarked with #10777 and Asuka tending to Sagara and yourself respectively.

“I can believe such a claim despite your cracked or fractured ribs dear,” Asuka stated, “Though have you had any thoughts about recovering our dear friends?”

Shit, you knew you had forgotten something in the plan.

“Don’t worry. Teacher will pick them up, they’ll be in good hands,” her uncle assured.

When he put it like that you simply had to,

Touma had wanted to stop the war and Teacher was a major player in it. This was his best chance and you weren’t going to ruin it.

“I’ll hold you to that,” you replied.

“I as well uncle. You will return Jaswinder Kaoru alive and unspoiled.”

He only snorted at that.

“Then let’s get you kids back to Academy City. It’s a school night after all. I hope you’ve done your homework.”

“Uncle, please do not assume that I am as irresponsible as my father likes to make me,” Asuka snapped.

“Of course, niece.”

“And the portal?” you asked.

“We’ll take care of it from this side.”

The time is now morning, the weather is warmer, and the date is now January 22.

The moment the halftrack cleared the portal, it suddenly vanished, just as Asuka’s uncle had promised. Of course whole party had crashed at your mother’s place. Asuka had reasoned that being AWOL two days in a row wasn’t much worse than just one day. That didn’t reassure Sparky at all. In a way, you pitied the two of them that would have to face an irate Dorm Supervisor. It wasn’t helped that their confrontation would be later in the day, after classes, to allow their imaginations to stew. Well, it would allow Sparky’s imagination to stew. Asuka couldn’t care less it would seem. As for Sagara, he planned to sit at home and do whatever paperwork he had missed. He was in no way being punished by your little sister for having shoved his work on to her. The way she used his hair as makeshift reins were definitely not endearing. Truly, your heart went out to Sagara. Kyousuke was off to school as usual, and there was no sign that he had spent the weekend plinking, or sniping Russians. It was kind of surreal.

You personally were thinking of going to the hospital to get your ribs checked out. On the other hand, Nayuta had been messaging you nonstop over breakfast. It seems like a situation has developed in School District 10. No surprises there.

There truly was no rest for the wicked. Nayuta was an understanding enough boss that she didn’t press you on where you got those bullet holes from and had given you the rest of the day off. Then again it had been a Sunday. Still, the weekend was over and it was back to the grind as Sagara had said as you were leaving. You had swapped out for a comfortable green sweater as you made your way to the office. Nayuta didn’t look too happy when you had arrived.

“Nii-chan, will you kindly explain what happened to my dear Kaoru-chan?”

You didn’t omit much. She slumped down with a sigh,

“At least you stopped the Russians from nuking the thing, whatever it was. I was at least hoping you’d come back with the Slumlord but I understand that her kidnapping wasn’t your fault in the first place.”

She pressed a key on her computer. School District 10’s limited amount of CCTV camera feeds were displayed on the battle station behind her.

“It’s a warzone,” you remarked.

“Yeah, and now the fuddy-duddies upstairs want this dealt with even if it is outside your mandate.”

“I hope you have some kind of guideline for me to follow then,” you answered, “Unless you want another mini-feudal state inside the City.”

Nayuta narrowed her eyes in suspicion before she spoke,

“Secure the district, contain the violence to within it, protect the rest of the City from it.”

Secure, contain, protect. That didn’t sound too hard.

Every once in a while Tokiwadai would play host to a tea party. Of course it was more of a diplomatic function than an informal social gathering. The Ladies were clearly divided based on their rank. Those of great importance seated at the centre together, regardless of whether they were the bitterest of enemies or the sweetest of friends. That was how you found yourself at the table with both the Dictator and the Railgun. The Queen of Tokiwadai was not to be trifled with.

“The administration has made their position quite clear,” the Dictator opened up the floor.

“What am I even doing here?” the Railgun then boorishly complained, “It’s the two of you who’s responsible for this stupid prank war in the first place.”

“Did you enjoy feeling the breeze on your skin?” you asked.

“Of course, though it went without saying that I finally had the excuse to wrap up,” the Dictator answered coolly, “Not all of us are sexually liberated after all.”

You resisted the urge to grind your teeth.

“That said, we have yet to deal with the demands of our elders,” the Level 4 thorn-in-your-side sighed.

“Easy, you two stop using Kuroko to prank each other!” the Ace of Tokiwadai shouted.

That answered the question of why she was sitting at the big table then. You took a sip of tea, quelling any visible laughter.

“My beloved junior would know that it ill behoves me to rely on a third party to perpetrate or perpetuate any attacks,” the Dictator too took a sip, “on your august character. When I make a point, I prefer to do so in person.”

She looked straight at you.

“I’m sure the Railgun has proper leadership experience,” you deflected.

“Of course, how could I forget that my beloved junior would stoop to your draconian level?”

“Oi, I’m still here you know?” the Railgun stood up.

“Now, now,” the Dictator spoke, “No need for that. Can you not enjoy a spot of tea?”

“Yes,” you added, “There’s no need to act uncivilised during teatime.”

Then it all went to shit. You couldn’t touch him. No one could. Bullets didn’t do a damn thing. He just sat there. You knew he was bored. Then he moved. You’ve seen big guys move fast before but this was on a whole ‘nother level. He stepped, casually tore off someone’s arm like it was nothing, and then he beat someone else to death with it. Another tried to knife him and that didn’t work out either. You frantically reloaded the shotgun as he sent the poor guy flying through the malt shop’s window. He bled when you shot him though. It was enough to give you hope. Then you realised you were the only one left and he was coming for you. Your fingers and arms felt pain as he wrenched your only weapon from them. The next thing you know the pain had spread to your chest. Looking down, you saw your goddamn shotgun sticking out of it. You could tell the motherfucker was smiling under that helmet as he squeezed the trigger.

“You’re not very good at this Batman thing are you?” Taylor asked.

“I try my best,” was your excuse.

“I’m not saying you aren’t trying, I’m just saying that if you were, even VERDICT would be shitting his pants at the sight of you. As it is, he sees you more as an annoyance than anything.”

“Not everyone can be Batman,” you replied, “And what about you? What does he think of you?”

“I think he’s especially wary around me,” Taylor replied, “It’s probably the only thing he’s done right at all. Anger not the wizard, for we are subtle and quick to anger.”

“Subtle?” you laughed, “I doubt it.”

Taylor was indignant.

“He has more in common with you than you think Taylor,” you continued, “He seems to operate with lethal force at the very least. From there he only escalates and that translates in to property damage or worse.”

“Hey at least I mind the collateral,” she protested.

“Of that I have no doubt,” you replied dryly.

“SNEAK. ATTACK.” A voice shouted out in to the night.

The two of you had been bounding from rooftop to rooftop and the jarring interruption halted you just in time. A ball of energy followed by a fist embedded itself in to the floor before you. Pulverised concrete dust flew up in to the night sky. When it cleared you had a better picture of your assailant. You regarded the strange young man whose jacket covered him like a cloak. A red and white design displayed prominently about his person. The two of you prepared for a fight.

“I missed, you must have a lot of GUTS,” he solemnly declared.

What.

“Still kids shouldn’t be out late,” he continued, “You need to wake up on time to go to school.”

“But what about you?” you heard Taylor mutter.

“Sleep nothing if you have enough GUTS.”

“If I’ve got the guts can you never bother us again?” you asked.

“Hah, I knew you were GUTSY,” he smiled as if vindicated, “come on and take a shot.”

“Very subtle,” Taylor whispered, “Almost too subtle for you.”

“Shut up and fight,” was your reply.

It honestly helps a lot that Kyril's and Touman's powers blend really well together.

One has an attack that is effectively unblockable and the other can null the guy you are attacking power.
