Thread 52? Aw geez, has it been a year already?!

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

You had decided to pay a visit to your first home base, Sand Island, with Jager. Though technically, you'd only been there for barely a day during the war. At first, you wanted to come by for old time's sake, but now you were confronted by a phantom from your past.

You never knew him personally, but you definitely knew of Pops, who used to be the chief mechanic at Sand Island, and seemed to be a genuinely nice and laid back guy. You had heard he had died during the war, but here was, in the flesh and most certainly alive.

"...Pops?" You gasp.

"Well, that's a nickname I wasn't expecting to hear." Pops raises an eyebrow. "Have we met before?"

Anyway, live, from /tg/, it's FRIDAY NIGHT!
This week in ACI, the Garuda tourney is getting a rerun, Windhover squadron apparently flew Strike Eagles if PA's interns fuckups are to be believed, and 6x sorties are on for the weekend
Also WoWS is kinda fun. Help

That bites! >>42728590 has the right idea, though. Square yourself away before worrying about art, and plan for next time!

Also, don't forget that Windows supports ASCI numpad codes. Try ALT+099 for c and ALT+067 for C. That should help you struggle by for a bit longer.

The cheapest I found for a key board in my local PC shop was about $10, you might find one on sale online for cheaper. A simple mouse was about the same price.

"I used to be with the 108th." You say.

"Really now?" Pops frowns as he tries to remember who you were. "Wait, you were one of the nuggets, right? When we were holding off the Yuktobanian amphibious assault?"

"That's right!" You nod. You also note Jager finally relaxing and lowering his guard.

"Jeez, I didn't think any of you made it out alive!" Pops shakes his head.

"I nearly didn't." You nod. "I was in the hospital for months. The war ended by the time I got out."

"Did any others...?" Pops asks hopefully.

You just shake your head sadly.

"Damn it." Pops sighs. "You and the rest of those kids didn't deserve any of that."

"Well, it's in the past now." You shake your head.

"Anyways, what brings you all the way out here?" Pops asks curiously. "Not many people come out here. Think this place is cursed."

"Just here to face some old ghosts." You say simply.

"Ah, I can understand that feeling." Pops nods. "Yeah, I got a lot of memories tied up in this place, both good and bad."

"Yeah, well, mine were mostly bad." You sigh. "Anyways, what do you mean by this island being cursed?"

"Ah, well." Pops chuckles. "A lot of rumors that the Demons of Razgriz haunt these waters. This island in particular. Most of the locals won't come near the place."

"And I suppose you have some part to play in that." Jager says, arms crossed.

"Well, what can I say. Not my fault a few thrillseeking kids can't tell what a prop engine sounds like at low altitude at night." Pops laughs. "Besides, I'd rather not have uninvited guests wandering around this island. Didn't seem quite right, you know."

"Yeah, I suppose." You nod.

We're gonna ask about the 108th eventually, right? We're just going to do some small-talk and reminiscing first. Bring up the Demons of Razgriz when it feels appropriate.

I mean, no way do I want to walk away from this without having mentioned it.

Interesting idea: our dad WAS looking to get into prop planes. And here's somebody who has the same interest.

Well then, at some point we should mention our dad's interest in aviation too.

"So, what exactly do you do here?" You ask as you look around at the abandoned airbase. "I don't really see this as a regular retirement spot."

"Not exactly an regular vacationing spot, either." Pops points out.

"Touche." You concede. "But still, what exactly do you do here?"

"Ah, well, what all old people with too much free time do. Indulge in hobbies." Pops grins. "Mine just happens to be planes."

"You couldn't just keep them in a regular airfield?" Jager asks.

"Well, then I'd have to pay fees, and file paperwork, and I'm too old for that sort of work!" Pops laughs. "Besides, like I said before, I'm far too attached to this place. I could never leave!"

"So, what kind of planes do you keep here, then?"

"Ah, just a few single engine props and a small autogyro. Nothing too much to brag about." Pops grins. "Was thinking about bringing some beefier planes, but I'd have to figure out how to sneak 'em in from the mainland first."

Um, I don't think we'll HAVE a chance to Scooby-doo it.

We either cover it now in the current conversation or - at best - we cover it in another conversation. (Assuming we even HAVE another meeting like this -- highly unlikely, because this is our one vacation time!)

We usually do more combat than social stuff, which means that in order to do this later, we'd probably have to spend a lot more time **then if we just did it now**.

If we can reassure him that we're cool with him being Belkan, we can probably get him to also open up about the Demons of Razgriz too.

Otherwise, he's probably going to be nervous and jittery.

Karla was based on Hetatia's Prussia originally, and it's Laika that was based on Hibiki.

But he does have a fondness for white haired girls (Haku in Cyberidol, Morgan might count, etc)

That and Tarin's original basis.

"You fought in the Belkan War, didn't you? On the Belkan side." You say.

"And what if I did?" Pops raises an eyebrow. "Did the Gray Men send you to silence me? Bounty hunters from Osea or Ustio?"

"No no, nothing like that!" You shake your head. "My father, he fought int he war, but decided to go AWOL when he was ordered to nuke Osea."

"Really?" Pops is takes a few steps back before bursting into laughter.

You glance at Jager, who just shrugs in uncertainty.

"Ah damn, getting so worked up over nothing!" Pops wipes a tear from his eye. "I guess I should be a little more forthright, too. I used to be a Belkan Air FOrce pilot in the War as well. I deserted my post when I was ordered to drop nuclear bombs on our own territory."

You vaguely remembered that when you were young, that scar on every Belkan's collective memory. Mom would never stop telling you about the atrocities your mother nation had committed.

"So you were actually there..." You blink.

"Yeah." Pops nods. "After that, I had to go into hiding since I knew the Gray Men wouldn't stop looking for me. What better place to hide than on an Osean airbase?"

"Pretty clever." Jager nods. "Definitely wouldn't be on the top of my lists of places to look."

"Honestly, I had the greatest fright of my life when I heard the Gray Men nearly escaped from prison!" Pops laughs.

"In pilot circles, yeah." Pops nods. "Though, we never really knew what you looked though."

"You keep using the word 'we' a lot." Jager butts in. "I thought you were alone on this island?"

Pops looks at you, and to Jager and just shakes his head with a smile.

"Aw nuts. I know I'm sworn to secrecy on on this, but since you're a Wardog, you deserve to know. Come on, let's get out of this sun."

Pops lead you back to the main admin building of the airbase. Naturally, the interior was completely empty and devoid of life and furniture. They practically gutted the place of all useful equipment when they left. However, you saw a small living area set up near the back. A few tables and chairs, as well as a working refrigerator.

"So what can I get you? Sodas? Beers? Our selection isn't too wide, but it's better than nothing."

"I could use a beer." Jager says and then glances at you. "She'll take a soda."

"Bad with liquor, eh?" Pops laughs as he slides a pair of bottles in front of you, coated with mist and condensation. "So where do you want me to start?"

Pagoda masts are a feature of japanese ships. Think the main part of the ship where the navigation system is. They're called pagodas because they're fairly high.

"Start from the beginning." You say.

And so he does. Pops goes on to recount how and why he deserted during the Belkan War, fleeing and going into hiding rather than drop a nuclear bomb on his own homeland. However, he was continually pursued by Belkan headhunters, who specialized in tracking down deserters like him. He then fled to Osea, where he created a new identity for himself and lived in hiding there ever since, working as a simple mechanic in a remote airbase.

However, then the Circum-Pacific War started. At first, Pops tried to stay under the radar, even when it became clear that the Gray Men were involved. He restricted his actions to merely helping the Wardogs stay one step ahead of the enemy. However, his hand was forced when the Gray Men made a direct move to take the Wardogs out of the war. Their machinations resulted in Chopper's death, and the framing of the rest of the squadron as traitors.

Pops then helped them flee Sand Island and to the Kestrel, an aircraft carrier whose captain was sympathetic to their plight and faked their deaths. From then on, the Wardogs became the Ghosts of Razgriz, directly opposing the Gray Mens' moves, culminating in a final battle which resulted in the destruction of both their headquarters and their trump card, the SOLG orbital weapon.

"So... what happened after that?" You ask, still trying to take everything in.

"Well, after everything died down, the Osean government gave us all new identities. A clean slate, if you will. Me, Blaze, Nagase, Grimm, and Snow went our own separate ways." Pops sighs. "I honestly don't know where they are or what they do now. We don't talk much about our new lives, you see. But every so often, I'll see an old Wardog drop by here from time to time."

"Really?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Oh yeah. Even though they live lives of peace now, they could never completely separate themselves from their pasts." Pops gives a sly grin. "Who knows. Next you come around you might bump into them."

Fusou was a WWI-era dreadnaught in the Japanese navy. In the 1930s, they added several levels of platforms on top of her forward mast superstructure to hold spotters and searchlights. Because of the layout, the whole mast looked like a pagoda, and it was 40 meters high. In Kancolle, that's represented by her head ornament.

"Aw nuts." Pops grumble as he looks outside. "That story took a lot longer than I thought. Gotta get the birds back into the hangar before it gets dark."

Indeed, the sun was starting to get rather low in the sky, which was now taking a deep orange hue.

"You need any help?" Jager asks as he gets up.

"Nah, I'm used to doing it on my own. You guys can do your own thing in the meantime. You're also free to stay here the night, too. Got a few refurbished bunks in the barracks you could use."

"Come on, Jager! Let's hit the beach!" You grin as you grab his hand. "Can't put all this good sun, sand, and water to waste!"

Jager pauses a bit uncertainly and shoots Pops a concerned look.

"Ah, it's fine!" Pops waves it off. "You two enjoy yourselves! I'll keep the fire going until you two get back!"

You head over to the west end of the island, where you remember the best beaches were located.

"You're already wearing your trunks, right?" You ask.

"Yeah I am." Jager nods.

"Great!" You grin as you pull your shirt off, revealing your swimsuit underneath.

"Is... is that zipper supposed to be there?" Jager raises an eyebrow.

You look down and just now realize that there indeed was a zipper located right in the chest area of your swimsuit.

"Of course it is!" You smile, zipping it down as far is it could go, which ends just a little above your belly button. "Only the best for you!"

"Really." Jager looks uncertain of how to react.

"Of couuuurse!" You grin as you push him into the water. The tropical waters were still warm thanks to the tropical sun. Heck, you can still feel the heat emanating from the sand, which was a nice contrast with the lowering temperature in the air.

"Doesn't the water feel great?" You smile as you splash around.

"Yeah. It's not ice cold like I was expecting." Jager admits.

"Don't tell me the only swimming you did was in training." You frown. "That doesn't count!"

"Well, cold water rescue was an important skill to learn-"

"No! We're swimming for FUN!" You pout.

And almost on a whim, you just dip your hand in the water and flick quickly, sending a wave of water directly into Jager's face.

Jager just stares at you long and hard. You actually recoil a bit, fearing that you had pushed him a little too far. That's when he dips both his hands into the water and splashes you in the face in return.

Oh boy, THIS MEANT WAR.

And the time flies by as you and Jager take turns splashing one another, not to mention dashing around in the water trying to get a better firing position on each other. It was basically like a dogfight, in a way. However, you briefly pause dousing Jager repeatedly in salt water to check on the sky, realizing that it really was starting to get dark now, the sun just now disappearing beyond he horizon.

"Come on, let's head back." You say, finally calling an end to the big Splash War. "It's starting to get dark."

"And cold." Jager grunts as he drapes a towel around you first.

"Thanks." You smile.

The walk back to the airbase was quiet and a little awkward. Neither of you really knew what to say to each other, so neither of you spoke. Once you get back to the base, you could see Pops securely closing the hangar doors. He gives a smile and wave, and you wave back as you head towards the now lit barracks, now a lone shining light in the darkness.

"Lot of stars." Jager observes, his eyes wandering upwards.

"Yeah..." You nod as you look up as well. "We're pretty far from the mainland, and the runway lights here are off, so there's practically no light pollution."

"It's nice, being able to see the sky like this once in a while." Jager says with a smile.

"Yeah... it is." You say, resting your head against his shoulder.

It was a long, beautiful night.
