It's 7 o'clock.

Three hours ago you finally called Summer and subjected her to nearly an hour of questioning, but she seemed to be in a good mood by the end of it. You learned more about your, uh, fae-ness, and how the fae in general in general operated. Before you ended the call, you reached some sort of agreement with Summer in that you'd consider helping her out if she requested assistance, and that she'd keep the line open in case you ever needed to call her and ask her for help or advice again.

Or at least, that's what it sounded like. You're kind of really, really new to any of this, but you seem to have gotten a good deal.

After that, you took the bus home, gave Alice the spicy snacks you bought for her, and stowed the soda you bought for tomorrow night's get-together in the minifridge.

Alice is currently firmly immersed in her video game, her urgent mutters into her headset providing background noise for your silent reverie. You don't have any more plans for the day, so you could either go hang out with Alice for the rest of the night or find something else to do.

Hi guys, sorry about the super long delay. I'll give more time for the vote in case anyone wants to go back and skim the previous thread.

The long Q&A session with Summer has made you a little more curious and actually excited about your powers, and now you kind of want to see what else you can do with them.

You do a mental check of your reserves and find that you have a enough for maybe something like altering a few limbs or enhancing your senses for a long period of time. You actually used a small chunk of your reserves while you were practicing your sensory abilities and messing around in the—er, that is to say, investigating the spooky closet. You got some power from scaring the crap out of your friends, though, and that replenished what you spent and gave you some more.

So you think a little about what you might want to do. Maybe something like wings? Flying would be cool, but highly impractical, based upon the little you know about flight and biomechanics. You'd need absolutely humongous wings if you even wanted the possibility of being able to get off the ground.

Wings are still cool, though, you decide. Even if they were completely useless for flying, you might be able to use them as weapons or defenses attached to your back or something.

Doing something in the room while Alice is there is out question, however, so you need to find somewhere to practice. Once again, the closest location would probably be the bathroom stall, and there'd be a conveniently placed mirror in the bathroom too, but you still remember what happened in there last time—specifically, your brilliant idea of practicing your sensory abilities in the girl's bathroom. Sure, it led to what you'd consider to be a large breakthrough in using your sensory powers, but it also led to a large amount of vomiting and more information about the bathroom than you ever wanted to know.
>>
You glance out the window. It's already dark outside. If you stay off the lit paths and roads you'd be able to stay hidden while practicing, but on the other hand you also wouldn't really be able to see anything either unless you burned more power enhancing your eyes.

Most had some hints, but we've only really "investigated" Alice by judging her reaction to us getting a part time job (assuming non-reaction means she doesn't know anything about the company). I'll have to re-read though for our other friends though. I thought we were mostly jumping at shadows when we thought that one guy was a werewolf.

>>42747459
The impression was when we were talking to her and I think we mentioned "oh hey, we got a part time job at some place down the way with a weird name" or whatever, and when she didn't react at all we assumed. "Well, she doesn't know that there's a supernatural investigation company down there." At least that was the impression I got at the time (I should probably re-read though).
>>
>>42747569
Ah yes, you gave her a description of what the bureau claims to be and where it's located, but she didn't show any sign of recognition.
>>
>>42747569
I'm sure our investigations will turn up more supernatural secrets soon enough. Maybe all our friends' secret is they're perfectly normal after all!
>>
I'm off to sleep, good luck with the thread.
>>
Heading outside is the best idea, you decide. The nearby area has a little too many people passing through, especially because today is Friday, but you have a bike and you can get to some more deserted areas.

You tap Alice's shoulder and tell her that you're going out for a bike ride before grabbing your keys, wallet, and personal phone and leaving. The bike paths are well-lit and you have no trouble biking to one of the school's currently unused fields about five minutes away. They're usually used for hosting events outside with tables and tents set up over the fields, but with winter break beginning in two days there aren't any ongoing events.

You park your bike at one of the racks along the side of the road, then jog deeper into the field toward a few trees that offer a bit of cover. It gets dark as you go deeper, your feet becoming faint outlines against the backdrop of the dying grass.

It's actually kind of fun to run now, you realize. Running was something you always kind of disliked, especially since it was basically mandatory when you were doing sports. The feeling of slowly creeping exhaustion and the monotony of repetitive steps had made a strong case for you to avoid running as much as possible, but now with your enhancements and improved stamina those issues were much less of a problem.

You aren't winded at all at the moment, and you find yourself able to jump and sprint freely without exhausting yourself as you would normally. The feeling of being almost superhuman is intoxicating.

Too soon, you reach the trees and force yourself to slow down and come to a stop. The air is cool and refreshing as you take deep breaths and stretch your legs as you lean against a tree.

(1/2)
>>
Now, what to make? You suppose you could do something like colorful butterfly or fairy wings to match with your faeness, but you also wonder if you could make something more functional. But you also realize that if you make something that could be useful, like tentacle spikes or something, it would cost a lot more of your reserves and possibly even exhaust it. You'd also have to break it back down after you went back to your dorm room, unless you found some way to hide it.

Perhaps you might be able to create something that combines both function and an efficient use of your reserves? Or perhaps you should just use today as a practice session.

You do your best to position yourself to kind of blend in with the trees before doing anything. It's probably really unlikely that anyone is going to catch a glimpse of you, but you want to be safe just in case.

Also, you realize that you have to kind of lift your shirt up or take it off if you want to put the wings where they're supposed to be.

After a few seconds of struggling to lift your shirt enough so you can actually put your wings somewhere around your shoulder blades while also trying to focus on a mental picture of what you want, you finally give up and just strip off your shirt. Luckily, your bra doesn't impede where you want your wings too much.

You cross your arms against your chest, but the feeling of embarrassment doesn't really go away no matter how much you try to ignore it. Still, you focus, and you begin to feel something come out of your back, the new nerve endings exposed to the cold air.

It takes a few minutes to completely form, and you realize that you can't even see what it looks like in the darkness. You could burn more power to enhance your eyes, but then you'd be wasting the amount you saved by making thin, useless wings instead of something more substanti
You sigh a little and reach back behind yourself even as you move your wings forward a little. Gently rubbing the surface, you find it less like butterfly wings with tiny scales but instead more like fragile dragonfly wings, the membrane diaphanous to the touch. It feels as though it would tear if you flapped it in a strong breeze.

Looking around, you see that there still doesn't seem to be anyone nearby. You peek out from behind the tree and see that there aren't any people biking or jogging on the roads. Maybe you could take this chance to take a picture with the flash function of your phone camera, although that might attract attention.

You quickly take out your phone and turn on the camera app, then snap a picture with the flash on. The light blinds you for a moment even as you quickly begin trying to absorb the wings back into yourself.

For a moment you have an image of the wings just dropping off of your back, falling to the ground like discarded refuse. Your body responds accordingly, your skin beginning to pinch against the base of the wings, but you quickly shake your head and focus on the image of the wings receding into your body. Disposing of the shed wings thoroughly would be a hassle, and you don't want to find out what the side effects of losing that bit of mass permanently would be. Maybe you would be perfectly fine, but maybe you wouldn't. Either way, it isn't worth the risk.

After the wings fully recede you put your shirt back on, then bring up the picture on your phone as you walk back to your bike. The picture kind of looks like a selfie, except with a set of giant dragonfly wings extending out from behind your back. You can see hints of the bright colors you were going for, but the wings are otherwise quite clear. It could be a side effect of how thin and cheaply made your wings were, and if anyone saw your picture it wouldn't be a stretch to claim that they were just cheap props you got online or something.

The bike back is uneventful, and Alice is still playing video games when you arrive at your room. Granted, you weren't gone for very long—at most half an hour. You empty your pockets and place your stuff on your desk, then flop onto your chair. The sprinting and jumping around you did on the field still made you work up a little bit of a sweat, so it feels nice just to sit back and relax for moment.

You're done for the day, you decide. Maybe you can play some video games with Alice or something.

Before you do that, however, you send a text to Liza and ask her how she's doing. From what you remember, Liza and you bought five pig brains total that day, and Liza ate one of them already. You're not sure how often she needs to eat, and you wonder if it would be sort of offensive if you suggested that she should eat a brain before going to the party. You know, just in case, so she doesn't scoop out your friends' brains or something.

You grimace a little at the mental image and shove it aside. Liza wouldn't do anything like that, and as her friend you shouldn't be doubting her. It wouldn't hurt to take precautions, though.

Alice seems happy that you're expressing interest in playing video games with her, and the two of you further your friendship as you play and laugh and shout together. Alice is quite competitive, it seems, but she's patient when teaching you how to play and praises you when you do the right things. You're not entirely unfamiliar with video games, but you don't play them very often and you don't play the competitive games Alice does.

It's good to get some experience, you decide. Besides, considering the stuff you can do, you might be able to draw ideas from video games for your own upgrades.
>>
It's really, really late when the two of you finally decide to stop playing. You're both getting sleepy, and Alice reminds you of the meetup you're having tomorrow night with your friends. As the two of you prepare for bed and the chatter about video games dies down, there's a slightly awkward silence as the two of you run out of topics to talk about.

"Sooo," you say, grasping for a topic, "when are you leaving for break?"

"As soon as possible," Alice immediately responds, pausing in her movements and staring at her desk. "I'd leave today, but Chloe's been going on about the thing we're doing tomorrow and I don't want to upset her..."

She trails off and goes back shuffling things around on her desk.

"What's with the hurry?" you ask. "If it's an emergency, I don't think anyone will mind if you go back early..."

Alice shakes her head. "It's fine. I'm sure it's nothing anyways, really."

That... sounds fishy. Suspicious. But you're not suspicious of her, but of the circumstances surrounding whatever she's talking about. Now that you're aware of the paranormal side of the world, you can't help but link a supernatural cause to any incident or accident you see on the news or internet, even when a more simple answer is probably correct.

And perhaps it really is nothing, and Alice is just worrying for no reason, but as her friend you feel like you have an obligation to hear her out and ease her mind.

"Well, if it's something sensitive then I understand, but if you tell me what's going on I can give my own, mostly unbiased point of view on your situation," you suggest.

Alice bites her lip, looking a little hesitant. "Well, um, it sounds kind of silly, but my dad hasn't called me in a few days and his phone just rings and goes to voicemail."

You stare at her. "That doesn't sound silly at all. Actually that sounds really worrying."

"It's not the first time he's done this," Alice explains. "He's a cop, and sometimes he gets really busy and wants to focus on the case instead of being distracted by personal things. He left me a message a few days ago, too, saying that he was going to be busy this week. So... really, there shouldn't be any reason for me to worry."

You nod slowly. Her explanation makes sense, but she still doesn't seem to have convinced herself. Maybe you could offer to help her in some way? Your parents have been pushing you to make friends and "connections" in college, and maybe you can convince them to let you go with Alice to her house or something.

I do not believe a major was decided.

You're currently thinking about doing biology things but you're still trying to decide on what, specifically.
>>
>>42753029
General biology for now, and start looking into specifics.
I guess a major in
> Developmental Biology and Embryology-the scientific study of embryology, development, and growth of animals and human beings. Includes the study of fertilization, oogenesis, histogenesis, gastrulation, and cell differentiation; embryological development including organ and pattern formation, morphogenesis, gene regulation, cell lineage, and fate maps; disease and defect studies; transgenic and evolutionary models of growth and development; and applications to specific organisms and phyla.
We could do research into the fae virus we were injected with, and possibly what makes the supernatural creatures so supernatural. Since we're a Fae we should have a leg up

And a minor in
>Biochemistry- the scientific study of the chemistry of living systems, their fundamental chemical substances and reactions, and their chemical pathways and information transfer systems, with particular reference to carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Includes the study of bio-organic chemistry, protein chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, bioseparations, regulatory biochemistry, enzymology, hormonal chemistry, calorimetry, and research methods and equipment operation.

Biochemistry would give us the needed insight for fucking with our brain to become more intelligent, which would make it super super easy to learn all the other fields

"How far away do you live anyways?" you ask.

Alice shrugs. "Three or four hours away, I think? It's not too far. You?"

"I'm only two hours away," you respond. "Did you drive here or take a plane?"

Alice smiles a little. "My dad got me a used SUV when I got into college. It was handy for getting my stuff here, but I haven't really used it since I can just bike everywhere on campus. But yeah, I drove here."

"Nice," you say, truly impressed. "I think my parents are too scared to let me drive, although I did get my drivers license."

Alice giggles. "My dad was definitely scared too. He took a long time going over safety reviews before finally deciding on a car model, and even after that he spent a while driving with me until he was sure I wouldn't get into a car accident the moment he wasn't looking over my shoulder."

She finally seems a little happier now, so you feel kind of bad when you have to bring the topic back around to the current situation. "So, uh, do you want me to come check things out over break with you?"

"...I guess, if you want," Alice says reluctantly. "Don't your parents want you to go home over the break?"

"It'll be fine," you assure her. "They want me to spend more time with friends anyways, and it's not like I haven't visited my parents in a while. I can go home whenever since I'm only two hours away, less if the traffic is good."

Alice seems to mull this over a bit before nodding. "Sure, why not?" She grins. "It'll be cool to have a friend from college come over."

"Awesome," you tell her. "So are we leaving on Sunday?"

Alice nods. "Probably. You should call your parents first, though, but it's a little late now."

"Yeah," you agree. "I'll call them tomorrow at noon or whenever I wake up."

After a little more small talk, the two of you eventually call it a day and go to bed.

True to your word, you wake up at noon the next morning. Alice is still sleeping, so you make the phone call to your parents in the hallway. As you thought, they're quite happy with the fact that you already have good friends in college, and they tell you to offer Alice to come over to your house next time. Of course, they also ask a lot of questions about Alice, but you deflect and tell them that she's a good girl and has good grades even though you're not really sure how true those statements are.

They also want you to text them every few days to make sure that you're alright, and also to tell them where you're going to be staying. Alice is still asleep, so you make some excuses about needing to each lunch and end the phone call.

Alice, hopefully, will wake up soon, and then the two of you can go grab a late lunch. Meanwhile, as you're waiting for her, you browse some of your school's social media sites in hopes that anything with weird or maybe even supernatural causes will catch your eye. You do, technically, have a job to do, and it would feel kind of wrong if you weren't working for the money that Susan was paying you every month.

Even as you browse, you respond to Liza and your friends. Liza said that she was doing fine, and that she had gotten a little hungry today so had eaten another "portion of food". That was convenient, and also gave you an estimate of how long her current supply of brains would last. If she ate a brain a week, that meant you had four more weeks before you needed to make a stop at Chinatown again.
>>
She also asks in the group chat with everyone whether or not she needs to bring anything to the party. Chloe says that she has the soda and the other drinks covered, and you mention that you also have a few liters of soda and some plastic cups. Laura says that she and Mark are going to order pizza and asks if that's okay, and Liza says that pizza is fine.

All in all, things seem to be handled for tonight. You have an afternoon free to make any preparations for the trip with Alice or anything else you need to do.

Another half hour passes before you decide to start waking Alice up instead of waiting for her to wake up. She resists your attempts at first, but when you mention that the two of you are going to miss lunch, she sighs and rolls out of bed.

After a quick lunch, you head back to your room to start packing for the trip with Alice. Between your backpack and your suitcase, you're able to fit your clothes and your laptop into them along with a few other necessities. Alice also packs alongside you and answers your questions about where you're going to be going and staying.

As you pack, you wonder if you can do a few more subtle things with your power. If you minimize the location you affect, you can lower the amount of resources you use while simultaneously practicing a small thing that wouldn't be too obvious. Of course, you'd probably find it harder to apply to your entire body, but discovering your limits in this way doesn't seem like a bad idea at all.

Of course, that's the plan anyways. You start by trying to harden your skin a little, and maybe increase your bone density at the same time. Something to give you a bit of durability, considering your augments so far have been just stamina or offense related. And then your hand freezes into position around the shirt you were grabbing, your skin and bones suddenly immovable, and your reserve of power dropping by a portion.

(1/2)
>>
Alice, fortunately, is still packing her own things, so she doesn't notice as you futilely attempt to pry your fingers open. Eventually you manage to slide your shirt out of your hand, and you excuse yourself to use the bathroom and lock yourself in one of the stalls.

Your frozen fist, it seems, is quite durable, and after a bit of testing and punching the toilet after making sure no one else was in the bathroom, you find your hand still perfectly fine and feeling unbruised. In fact, you mostly stopped because you were afraid that the porcelain would shatter before your hand did, or, barring that, the augmentation was disrupted enough that it would suddenly go away and leave you with a normal, human hand that you were smashing against the toilet.

After a few minutes of focusing and locating where, specifically, the enhancements started and ended, you begin the process of softening your skin, wiggling your fingers as they begin to free themselves from their bindings. It's a relief that you were able to reverse the enhancement, as otherwise you might have actually had to resort to the method of punching a rock until the enhancement broke.

When your hand is completely back to normal, you find that it is a little sore, but the pain is at a level where you can basically just ignore it. Alice doesn't seem to suspect anything when you return, and the rest of the afternoon passes uneventfully. Your bags are completely packed and ready to go, with only a few things such as toothbrushes and toiletries that you'll need the next morning left unpacked.

As planned, you and Alice meet up with your friends at around five o'clock at Chloe's room. She's on the third floor of her building and lives by herself, somehow having managed to get one of those rare single rooms. Consequently, there's a lot more space than you would expect, especially considering the fact that her room about the same size as yours. There's only one bed, one desk, and one set of drawers, so really, it's almost as if her room has twice the amount of free space that yours does.

The hallways are quite empty, most of the students having already left for break. You shift the bags filled with liter-bottles of soda to one hand as you knock on the door to Chloe's room.

Laura opens the door for the two of you. "Hey, Rachel, Alice," she says, taking one of the bags from your hands. "Liza's already inside. She's helping Chloe set up the TV."

She looks kind of tired, you realize. Probably from all of the testing last week. "You looking forward to break?" you ask, smiling at her.

"Kind of," she says, stifling a small yawn. "I could use some more sleep."

"Hey Rachel!" Liza says enthusiastically when you walk inside. "Mark brought his TV over, are there any movies you want to watch?"

"Whatever you want is fine with me," you reply. "I don't really watch that many movies."

Alice sets the board games in her arms down one the dresser, then walks over to Mark, who's setting at the desk. A laptop is in front of him, cables connecting it to the back of the TV.

"Pizza's coming in 45 minutes," Chloe says. She grins. "I kinda sorta stole some chairs from the lounge, but at least we all have seats now."

(1/2)
>>
The next few hours pass as the six of you drink soda, eat pizza, watch movies, and play console games on the large flatscreen that Mark hauled over. It's almost 10 o'clock when Chloe suddenly reaches under her bed and pulls out a frosted glass bottle of vodka.

"Alright, who wants to take some shots?" she asks cheerfully, grabbing a few plastic cups and pouring a bit of alcohol into them. "Too bad we don't have actual shot glasses, but I can guesstimate... sort of."

Laura and Mark look doubtfully at each other, but shrug and each take a cup.

Chloe jumps out of her chair and opens the fridge, pulling out three bottles of lemonade, cranberry juice, and orange juice. "Oh yeah, and these are the chasers. Just take a drink after you take a shot."

Alice looks hesitant, but Liza reaches out and grabs two cups, letting Chloe pour the liquor into one and pouring a bit of orange juice into the other. After a shrug, Alice ends up following suit.

Chloe looks at you expectantly, a unrepentant grin on her face.

You roll your eyes and chuckle, grabbing a cup of alcohol and pouring yourself some cranberry juice.

Chloe beams at you and grabs her own cup. "Alright everyone, 1, 2, 3!"

You down the entire contents of the cup in one gulp. The alcohol, frankly, tastes horrible, but the taste is quickly washed away with the juice and the warmth in your stomach isn't entirely unpleasant. Everyone else has done the same, and you realize that maybe it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for some of your friends.

Alice, in particular, is going to be driving tomorrow. You do have a driver's license though, so if she's too hungover to drive then you can always do so. Liza is also someone you need to watch out for, as you're not sure how her physiology is going to react to the alcohol.

As for yourself, you're hoping that your own fae physiology and the enhancements you gave yourself are going to help in processing the alcohol. You don't want to be the buzzkill when everyone else is having a good time, but you're also wary about supernatural complications and alcohol poisoning in general.

Chloe grabs some of the board games Alice brought over, amending the rules with instances where the player has to take a shot. The bottle disappears quickly between the six of you, and before you realize it you've already had three shots, and your friends possibly more. It's a vicious cycle, as the more drunk they get, the worse they play.

(1/2)
>>
After the vodka came a bottle of whiskey. Chloe seems quite well prepared, and you sneak a look underneath her bed to see that there's still a few cans of beer and another two bottles of vodka and a bottle of whiskey. You ask Chloe where she got them from, but she just giggles and puts a finger to your lips, making a shushing sound.

Liza seems to be doing fine, despite having drunk more than you. Alice is looking a little tipsy, but she's quite small compared to anyone else in terms of height and weight. Laura and Mark are doing okay, but not as well as Liza, and Chloe is having no problems at all.

You wonder if you should try to stop them from drinking any more, or let them keep going.

>>
This is fine, you decide. Everything is alright.

As the night goes on and another bottle gets pulled out, the drinking games you were playing get swapped with more simple memory games played with cards. Alice and Laura weren't really paying attention to the rules anymore, and even Liza seemed to be getting tipsy. You, on the hand, have noticed your movements growing clumsy and uncoordinated, but your mind is still clear for the most part.

The six of you split up into teams of two, with you taking Alice because she seems to be the most drunk. Due to being mostly mentally sober, you manage to force the other two teams to drink a lot more often than you. As a bonus, Alice got a brief respite from drinking, allowing her to sober up a bit.

In between the bouts of drinking, you remember that drinking water and staying hydrated would help prevent any hangovers, so you make sure that you and Alice continue to drink water after each shot. The other four don't seem interested in your proposal, so you just shrug and avoid pressing the issue.

By the time the third bottle has been finished, Mark and Laura have relocated to Chloe's bed and are talking quietly with each other. Chloe is grinning and babbling about some incident where speakers made farting noises during a lecture, and Alice is leaning against your shoulder and giggling as if it were the most funny thing in the world. Liza is taking shots periodically, leaning backward on her hands and staring up at at the ceiling after each one as if contemplating something.

You're smiling politely and absentmindedly ruffling Alice's short curly brown hair as you keep an eye on Mark and Laura. Their conversation has been steadily growing louder, although no one else seems to have noticed.

That's weird, you decide. Are they arguing? They shouldn't be arguing, this is a party. Or maybe they're just loudly talking or something, you're not sure.

You carefully lower Alice to the floor, where she flops her arms out to the side as she laughs, then slowly get to your feet. Liza is lost in her own world, while Chloe is focused on her audience of one.

As you wobble toward the bed, they don't seem to notice you until you speak up. "Hi," you say, slumping halfway onto the bed. "Are you guys okay? Do you need any water?"

They look at you, confused for a moment, before Laura pushes Mark away and scowls. She gets off the bed and drops to the floor, scooting over toward where Chloe is and pouring herself a drink.

You watch her go. "Sorry, did I interrupt something?" you ask.

Mark shakes his head. "No, no, it wasn't your fault. She just..." He sighs. "Wanna step outside with me for a moment, get some fresh air to clear our minds? No one's awake at this time anyways."

"Sure," you tell him, slowly sliding off of the bed and stumbling backward a bit before finding your balance.

"We're gonna take a breather," Mark tells Chloe as the two of you walk by.

The hallway is, actually, a lot better than the stuffy room. You give a little sigh as you lean against the wall behind you. Mark is doing the same across from you, his toned body visible through his t-shirt as he looks at you with from beneath his long eyelashes.

The alcohol must be affecting you more than you thought, you decide. You give yourself a mental shake. Bad brain, no weird thoughts, or else you're going to feed it to Liz—nevermind, also a bad idea. Still, Mark is quite conventionally attractive, you decide. You wonder why he and Laura were fighting. They're usually adore each other.

"Hey," Mark says, pushing himself off of the wall. "You wanna go for a walk or something? Some breeze would be nice."

That might be a good idea, you think, if you ever want to get somewhere private to talk to him about his problems. You're a little worried about Liza, but she seems to be behaving herself, and she hasn't shown any problems all night.

"Sounds good to me," you tell him.

The two of you walk down the hallway and opt to take the elevator to the ground floor. It's really dark outside, but just as before the streetlights are still on and most of the surroundings are lit. As you walk with Mark and enjoy the nice feeling of the breeze against your face, you realize that now is probably the best time to broach the subject.

"What happened back there?" you ask Mark. "I don't think I've seen the two of you argue, like, ever."

He frowns, rubbing his face. The motion, for some reason, is quite interesting, his palm stroking his face and tracing his jawline. "She... we, were drunk, and we said some dumb things," he replies. "We had an argument about our, uh, activities."

You're finding it a little hard to concentrate on what he's saying. His voice is more melodic and entrancing than understandable, the meaning lost behind rise and fall of the rich sound. Your walking pace has slowed to a stop, and you turn to him, slowly inching closer. He smells nice. Is it some kind of cologne?

"What kind of arguments?" you ask.

He says something in response, but you don't really hear it as some part of your mind seems to be shaking you, telling you that something is wrong, that these aren't your normal thoughts. You try to bat them away, but they're annoying and persistent.

I'm willing to bet it's just our powers that are acting up! We used a bunch of them to mess around and haven't recovered anything since, after all.
>>
>>42757401
I mean, I'm not ruling anything out especially with the rolling (though it might be to restrain her fae-ness). Just feels like the simplest explanation.
>>
Let's hope whatever the case is, using our power and rolling high won't make things worse.
>>
No, there is something wrong here. You strain against whatever influence is on your mind, but it's hard to do so. You want Mark, for some reason, and your body is rebelling against you. There has to be something you can do, something to force your body to obey you...

With a burst of effort, you pull on your power and flood your system with adrenaline, you heart pounding furiously as you realize that your faces are dangerously close to each other. Your shoe smacks into the concrete pavement like a gunshot as you propel yourself away from him, nearly tripping on your own feet.

You stare at him. "What the hell was that?"

Mark looks panicked even as he slowly advances upon you. "Shit shit shit," he repeats. "You need to forget that happened, nothing happened, alright?"

The strong, spicy spell comes back even stronger, and you reflexively use a bit of your power to shut off your sense of smell. "Stay where you are," you tell him. "What are you doing?"

He doesn't answer you as he stalks forward, his visage somehow looking even more desirable the closer he gets. A quick check of your power reserves tells you that you have enough for a few enhancements, whether they be claws or sensory boosts.

Hopefully being aware and using our powers both will mean any further glamour won't work.

Wonder if this is actually Mark, or an impostor. Leaning towards the former. Either would have interesting implications.

Some sort of filter for our nose/mouth. Whatever he's doing seems to be pheromone based if the distinctive smell is anything to go by.

Yeah, he ignored the request/demand to stay back, and is still pumping out the pheromones. At this point he's basically an attempted rapist. Once we get away or rise triumphant in battle, I'm game for calling or texting work to arrange a pickup for them.

He's not listening to you, so you decide that you're probably going to get better results if you beat the shit out of him before resuming your attempts to communicate.

You focus, hard, and try to do something with your muscles along with your arms in the few precious seconds that you have. You feel like you managed to do something with the contractile strength of muscle fibers and maybe increase the density of your muscles slightly, and the previous sensation of rock-hard skin comes naturally to you.

This time, however, you wisen up and harden your skin selectively in plates in order to allow yourself some more flexibility. It's a bit of a rough job, and from what you can feel after flexing your fingers there are definitely some uneven or missed parts, but you ignore them as you launch yourself at Mark.

He's taken by surprise as you punch him somewhat hard in the stomach. You don't want to accidentally rupture an organ or something if he's as durable as a normal person, so you take a moment to examine his reaction. He's somewhat winded, but seems fine as he swears and raises his arms and settles into a stance.

"Please, Rachel," he says. "You don't know how impor—"

You resume your attack before he can continue with his attempts to ensnare you with his voice. Mark turns out to be quite durable, but your fists wear him down, his blocks ineffective as you just end up bruising his forearms anyways. Theres an odd feeling of enjoyment as your reserves begin to fill once again with every blow you land and every grunt he makes.

(1/2)
>>
Eventually you back him up against the wall and land a few solid hits to his stomach, knocking the wind out of him before you shove him face-first into the ground. You're careful to avoid knocking his head into anything, of course, and you haven't hit him even once in the head the entire time. You know how serious head injuries and concussions can be.

You plant your foot into his back as he struggles weakly. Now that you have a break, you quickly take a moment to remember the feeling of your wings and you construct an even thinner membrane in your throat and nose, thin enough for air to penetrate but hopefully too thin to allow whatever pheromones or something he's been using in.

"Mark, I need you to calm down," you tell him, eyeing the three spikes coming out of the back of his shirt. Two are coming out from the shoulderblades, while one is coming out from where his tailbone is. "I'm not going to tell anyone what I saw today, alright?"

His frantic thrashing takes a moment to stop. "Really?" he asks, his voice slightly muffled due to his face being pressed against the concrete.

You roll your eyes and cross your fingers behind your back. "Yes, Mark."

There's a moment of silence. "Are you a... you know, too?"

It's probably better to not even mention the idea of arrest to him. We can just contact work after all this and arrange a pickup later, when he isn't on alert. That way, he can be white-van'ed by surprise, and we can maintain plausible deniability.
>>
>>42758346
Hopefully we can actually get some answers.

I'm kinda worried about Laura to be honest. He and Laura generally stick together right? What if she's his partner in crime and comes looking?
>>
>>42758410
That's a very good point. She could be anything from a partner in crime, to a victim of his, or anything in between.
>>
>>42758514
Yeah, their interactions when we interrupted them were weird but I can't quite pin them. The not noticing anyone else and how she shoved herself away from him with a scowl could indicate he was using his power on her, but it must have been a different one if so since she didn't seem to be all over him, and the fact that they were getting loud and seemed to be arguing is suspicious.
>>
"A what?"

He tries to say something, but you ignore him and cut him off. "So why'd you get all rapey back there?"

He sputters a little. "I did not—I didn't mean to—"

You sigh and roll him over with your foot. "Just explain what happened."

He tries to get into a sitting position, and you let him, but when he tries to stand up you glare at him a little and he sits back down.

"I kind of lost control of myself," he says, his face flushing. "I didn't realize I was releasing so much pheromone. I guess I was a little, uh, frustrated with Laura."

"And after that?"

"I panicked some more and tried to make you forget that happened," Mark admits.

You frown. "You can wipe people's memories?"

"I don't know," he says, shrugging. "I was thinking maybe hypnosis would work, but I've never done anything like that before."

"Why so desperate?" you ask. "You couldn't just trust me to keep a secret? Does Laura know you can do all this?"

"Because I have a responsibility to keep what I am a secret," he says, looking frustrated. "So no, I can't just take your word for it, and no, Laura doesn't know about it."

"You better not have seduced Laura like that," you growl.

"I don't usually do anything like this," Mark protests. "And I wouldn't risk revealing what I am. Laura just thinks I have a, um, high sex drive."

Mark does get along pretty well with Laura, you grudgingly admit to yourself. The chemistry between them doesn't seem forced or based upon sex, and even though Mark could be lying about not having hypnotized people before, your friendship with him during these past few months make it hard for you to outright reject what he's been saying.

(1/2)
>>
"Can you trust me with your secret now?" you ask him. "It's not like you've explicitly told me what you are, and no one would believe me if I gave a description of what you've been doing anyways."

"That's true, I guess," Mark agrees. "But I don't have any reassurance from your end, and you're the one with the information that could potentially ruin my life."

Is technically the truth, and implies we've met someone like him before, which may make him more likely to open up to us (no point keeping a secret the other person already knows).

>>42758980
