You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

"Hostiles sighed." Tarin whispers as she glances through her viewport.

"I see them." You nod as you look at the scene through your periscope. The Reiklander VTs weren't even bothering hiding their presence, stomping down the road in a single file line, running lights shining brightly in the darkness. You counted around six Panthers and an additional four Lynxes acting as an escort.

And right now they were in a perfect position to be hit from the side. You reckon that even at this range, your Dragonsbreath recoilless rifles should be able to punch through their armor.

So far, it seemed as if they were completely unaware of your presence. You could attack now, and make sure those advanced machines never made it to the front, but then you'd pretty much be giving your position away...

"Tarin, we're going to hit them before they can reach the front." You announce as you continue to observe the movement of the convoy.

"Really?" Tarin asks. "By ourselves?"

That was a good question. You could hit them right now, or you could call Rock and Alex to bring the mounted yeomen over to provide extra firepower. However, you weren't sure how long it was going to take. The Panthers were moving at a brisk pace and you weren't sure how soon it would be before they reached safety.

"No time to call them over." You grunt as you clutch your firing trigger. "We'll do what damage we can on our own."

"All right." Tarin nods, slowly powering up Clementine's engines. "I'll be ready to move once you give the order.

"Good." You say as you peer through your periscope again. The running lights on the enemy VTs made them painfully easy to target. However, you were experienced with the 76mm cannon and could reasonably predict where its shell would fall. You hadn't practiced enough with Dragonsbreath enough to feel confident in hitting anything with the first volley, though.

Your first cannon shot is is right on target, punching right into the side of the lead Panther and going straight out the other end. The stricken Panther's upper body explodes violently, causing the rest of the column to halt its advance, the large VTs nearly slamming into each other in a massive pileup. However, that's when your six recoilless rifle rounds land among the group. Two of the Lynxes immediately explode, while two Panthers take heavy damage from side and leg hits. Looks like you were a bit too far out for maximum effectiveness. However, the impacts seemed to have caused serious damage, with the incendiary after effects further illuminating the targets.

Almost immediately, the Lynxes let off an inhuman shriek and begin launching flares into the air, illuminating the entire area while the Panthers continue down the road, with the two damaged ones lagging behind.

"Reinforcements are surely on the way now." Tarin warns.

"I know." you nod.

"Tarin, full reverse!" You bark. "We're out of here!"

"Roger, full reverse." Tarin nods as she shifts gears.

Honestly, while you would have loved to stay a little longer to finish off those last two Panthers, you no longer had the element of surprise, and the majority of your munitions had been expended in that ambush. Now back down to just one cannon, it would be easy for you to get overwhelmed. Tarin backs Clementine up deeper into the trees, and out of the coverage of the flares.

Yeah except we won't. They're a dedicated VT striker force who will roll of our unprepared men since they were not briefed on ambushes. These are distraction troops for breaking their front, not heavy hitters for a prolonged fight. If we draw them in now we are fucked 7 different ways from sunday. Especially with out ordinance mostly spent.

we have 2 vts and light infantry against possibly 8 lynxes with undead complement. Not counting if any of the unhurt Panthers come with. Yes we hurt them. However, if they come down on us in force we'll be fucked, since our line won't be ready for them to do so til tomorrow.

We already know that Clementine's cannon can one-shot Panthers when you hit 'em in the right spot. Also, we have a ton of low-profile irregulars to help with the ambush. The Panthers are dedicated anti-VT units, they're not designed to cope with swarms of highly mobile VTs packing anti-VT weapons.

If they send heavy-hitters after us, our forces can outmaneuver them and provide meatshields while we hard-kill the heavily armored ones. If they send swarms after us, such as Lynxes, we can ambush them since we know from past encounters that the brains-in-jars running them are not very good at abstract thinking.

Yes, it's a gamble, but so was hitting them in the first place.

>>42749736

No the German.
>>
>>42749770
No. Let me say it right now, leading an imperial force, WHICH WILL NOT CONSIST OF JUST THE AMBUSHED ELEMENT, to our men is completely fucking retarded. We are not meant for engagements, we are meant for the distraction. Please preserve our forces until they can be committed to maximum effect.
>>
>>42749786
German is cool, Faylnn was shit.

Granted she redeemed herself in Cyberidols/
>>
>>42749770
Except any ambush on our end will be shoddy at best due to low prep time. Additionally they will come down on us like a fucking hammer. Remember this is several divisions of troops. This is a distraction force, not one meant to engage for any length of time.
>>
I was honestly thinking that we fire a volley then run like motherfuckers since they're already on to us.
>>
>>42749891
I was too but anons insisted we link back up despite the stupidity of doing so.
>>
>>42749891
We already ambushed them. Our main force isn't to be used as that, we've got a different role of vastly more importance than killing a couple tanks. Remember, we have
an entire division behind us that can do that. We're supposed to enable them by sowing confusion at the time of attack, not before. It lessens our effect.

"Let's shake them off our tail, Tarin." You say. "I'm in no mood to keep the fighting going."

"Roger that." Tarin says as she weaves Clementine through the trees. Of course, she doesn't walk back to the rally point in a direct path, instead winding through the forests in random directions and often doubling back as well. It was actually quite a wonder that she could keep her sense of direction with all of this maneuvering, and in the dark, as well.

Finally, Tarin finds a large patch of rocky ground that would leave any visible tracks, and uses that to finally break off the trail, silently slinking back to where Rock, Alex, and the others were waiting.

"What the heck did you guys do?" Alex asks curiously over the radio as you approach. "We could see the fires and flares from here."

"Ambushed a convoy of Panthers." You say simply. "I managed to take out one and damage two more."

"Jeez, and now they're combing the forest for us." Alex groans. "We might have to fall back."

"Now, just a second." Rock speaks up. "They think we're farther behind the lines. We're close enough to the lines that they won't suspect our presence here. I say we just stay put and wait it out."

"No, we're going to stay put." You say. "They'll have a hard enough time finding us in the darkness, and they still have to worry about the Breton attack coming at dawn. I doubt they're going to devote much resources to trying to find us."

"I hope you know what you're talking about." Alex grumbles. "Anyways, I've told the yeomen they can all sleep in for the night. I don't trust them to be on watch anyways, so that means we rotate watch. You fine with that?"

"Yeah, no problem." you say.

---

You're jolted awake by the sound of horns booming in the distance. You quickly stumble around, only to see Tarin sitting in the driver seat, calmly brewing a mug of instant coffee.

"Is that what I think it is?" You groan.

"Yep." Tarin nods. "Those horns mean they're rallying for the charge."

"Well, sounds like you're up and awake, sleepyhead." Rock chuckles over the radio. "But yeah, the attack is starting soon. The whole Reik line is scrambling to prep."

"D-do we attack now, my lords?" You hear one of the yeomen squeak.

"If we disrupt their line now, it'll improve the chances of the main force breaking through." Alex muses.

"We attack the line as we planned." You say. "Tarin, are the rifles loaded?"

"Yeah. The yeomen insisted on reloading them for us." Tarin nods. "I of course checked that they were all ready to fire."

"Great." You nod.

Suddenly, another, but deeper horn blares, and the horns continuously roar as they go down the line. Suddenly, you feel the ground begin to tremor, and your entire VT begins to vibrate, loose items clattering around wildly as thousands of Vertical Tanks pound the ground with their massive armored feet. From your position, you could just barely make out the countless colored banners waving in the air as cannon fire ripples from both sides.

"That's our cue!" Rock whoops. "Think fast, Roy! What are you going to do?"

>>42750961
It's definitely on the 'shoot big guns and do damage' side, rather than 'shrug off shots via HUEG THIK ARMA' side. Recoilless rifles give us limited flexibility so not much of a role-changing factor.
So we might as well still be self-propelled anti-tank.

"We'll hang back and act as a lookout." You say. "We'll leave all the fun to you guys."

"Ah well, your loss." Rock laughs.

"Keep an eye out." Alex says simply as their VT charges forward. The yeomen form up behind them, their tiny ultralight VTs easily keeping up with their larger cousin.

Meanwhile, Tarin walks up Clementine to a small patch of high ground that gives you a better view of your surroundings. Of course, she doesn't place the VT directly on top of the hill, but slightly back so that most of it was hidden on the reverse slope. You turn out of the hatch and look around with your binoculars.

To your right, you could see a rainbow of colors as a wave of VTs charge at the Reikland line. You see antitank guns and dug in Lynxes all down the line fire. You see a few Breton VTs get knocked out, but the front line, consisting almost entirely of Knights Errant, didn't seem to care. After all, their glory was all on the line.

Meanwhile, you watch as Rock and Alex's VT descends down to the rearmost defense line, attacking an AT battery from the rear. Machine gun rounds and recoilless rifle shells fly, tearing the guns and their crews apart. In the heat of the battle, though, none of the Reiklanders appear to realize what's happened just yet.

"The yeomen are reloading their RRs! We're pushing ahead!" Alex announces as their VT continues down the line, machinegunning infantry in a trench line like fish in a barrel.

You sweep your gaze around, looking for threats. Well, truthfully, there were threats EVERYWHERE. There was no telling when something could pop out to engage your buddies.

You decide to keep an eye on the yeomen. You watch as they quickly dismount their tiny little VTs as they load fresh shells into their side mounted recoiless rifles, while a couple stay on overwatch with their machine guns.

Suddenly, you hear a high pitched whistle as the telltale sound of artillery sails over your head and begins landing among the Breton forces. The artillery doesn't do any major damage to the VTs, but the explosions were definitely disrupting their cohesion. At the same time, you could see several platoons of Lynxes charging forward to counterattack while the Knights Errant were bogged down at the first defense line.

You finger twitches on the trigger, but know that firing now would draw attention to you. You glance back at Rock and Alex, who were now clearing out the next AT battery down the line.

You range in on the Lynxes, aiming your cannon at the lead one. However, you briefly consider firing your recoilless rifles as well. They were well outside your effective range, but it would do a damn good job scattering their formation. The only problem was that the more ordnance you put out, the greater chance of them finding your position...

>You now have 3 Fate Points!

Your shell sails through the air, slamming into the back of the Lynx and causing it to explode. The Lynxes pause for a second, as if trying to process what just happened, and then continue on anyways. However, that one second of hesitation is enough to give the Knights Errant time to rally as they charge in, bounding over trench lines and obstacles and sticking their lances into the Lynxes. This is the first time you've seen contact lances operating in combat, and watch as the explosive tipped weapons literally pop the first rank of Lynxes like balloons. However, the rear line of Lynxes opens fire at point blank, raking the Breton VTs with close range fire. That close, not even the Breton VTs' thick armor was guaranteed to protect them, and you see a handful of Knights Errant fall.

However, you can't afford to keep watching the battle unfold, as you see the yeomen rallying and moving to link back up with Rock and Alex. You swivel your turret and see a fresh wave of Lynxes moving toward the battle line. You also see a pair of Panthers stalking toward where Rock and Alex were as well, no doubt having finally caught on to their rear line attack.

It's an old DC comic knwon as THE HAUNTED TANK.

During WW2, an Stuart was haunted by the Commander's ancestor (a Confederate General) which guided them to victory. The tank was wrecked a couple of times and the crew had to get other Stuarts (one time, even making a tank out of random parts in a tank graveyard), until finally getting an M4 Sherman (Haunted by the Ghost of General Sherman).

"Yeomen!" You bark. "Don't attack those VTs head on! Attack them from the flanks if you can!"

"Yes, milord!" You hear the yeomen affirm as their ultralight VTs scatter in multiple directions. You see one Panther move to engage Rock and Alex while the second one turns to face the yeomen, trying to bring its cannon and coaxial gun to bear.

"Which one do we engage?" Tarin asks.

This put you at a bit of a conundrum. The Panthers haven't seen you approach yet. You've got a good flanking shot on the Panther engaging Alex and Rock, but the second Panther was trying to engage the yeoman. You wondered if you could trust their smaller size and faster speed to protect them.

Reroll time!

Rolled 14 (1d20)

Probably is a good time for that. If the Vt kills the yeomen we'll have less firepower and difficulty reloading the tubes, and this is a vicious battle. Plus, y'know, feelings and shit.

Rolled 16, 19, 6, 14, 8, 13, 17, 7, 1, 2, 18, 1 = 122 (12d20)

You fire your 76mm, and are disheartened to see your shell pretty much bounce off the front armor. Guess you were a bit too optimistic there. However, you successfully manage to grab the Panther's attention as its turret swivels to face you instead, only to be sent staggering back as recoiless rifles slam into its hull at close range. Belching smoke and flame, the Panther topples to the ground.

Meanwhile, you see Rock and Alex's VT sidestep just in time to avoid the other Panther's shell. The Panther, realizing it was now outnumbered, begins to back off.

"They're on the run!" You grin.

"Not quite." Rock warns. "Watch out!"

As the lone remaining Panther backs off, it stops right on top of a hill, where two more Panthers crest the hill. Meanwhile, two platoons of Lynx scurry out as well, forming a half circle around you.

"I figured you would try something after that stunt last night." Gregor glowers as he pops out of the hatch of his personalized Panther, glaring at you with utter disdain. "Now let's see how you REALLY perform in battle."

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week! Don't forget our Cole in Wonderland special is on Sunday, and Ace Combat on Friday!

>Cole in Wonderland

Come join in the classic tale. A story of a young girl whose childlike innocence and purity endeared the hearts of children everywhere for generations as she travelled through her 'Wonderland'.

And that girl's name was Alice.

...Unfortunately she couldn't make it for this Quest as we couldn't find her in time, BUT we found another girl who (sort of) matched her description closely enough on such short notice.

And that girl's name was Cole.
