Story Thus Far: http://pastebin.com/JVVE5P2q

Its been a blur since the arrival of the Kozak Centaurs. A small group of 8 split off from the main herd, moving off to tail the Krasick Hussars. Artyom and the leader of this warband had a muted conversation, prompting the departure of the eight, and the remaining twelve cossacks to flank you as a sort of honor guard. They don't seem the sort to brook any disagreement either, so you're left sort of stuck going where they are.

Its where they ARE going that is unsettling, further west than you've ever been. Far into the badlands. Off in the distance you can see a strip of grey on the horizon that Veles identifies as the beginnings of the wasteland. He mentions something about 'latent minerals in clay coupled with near desert conditions' as a cause for the color. Artyom has a more dire explanation.

[It is the blight from the death of Casimir, our progenitor] The burned hussar says warningly, [It grows and festers. Tainting all it touches. The Bandyta are stained pale for daring to live there.] You're ready to discount it as mysticism, but there's a nagging doubt in the back of your head that there may be something to what he says.

On the bright side, the Kozaks have willingly chipped in a portion of their own rations to supplement your own. A sort of hard bread that has a rich flavor, and takes a while to chew properly. You're nibbling on a portion of it as the tent city of Ursus comes into proper view.

You opt to keep quiet for now, the situation is tense as it is. The Kozaks are edgy, tense and ever alert for danger, focusing out towards the approaching wasteland. You can see now that Ursus is constructed right on the very edge of what could be considered the badlands, the grey wasteland nearly butting up to the rear of the city.

You remain silent as you enter the thouroughfare down the middle of the tent city, the city, while still active, has an overwhelming sense of unease over it as well, as if the entire populace is waiting for the shoe to drop, or perhaps another one. Civilians, if you can call them that, are skittish, moving from tent to tent so as to not expose themselves to the elements. Inside the tents you can hear the usual sounds of merriment, economy, and life, but it is muted somewhat.

The dozen centaurs flanking you make with all speed through the city, to the main tent that houses the ataman and his leadership. It looks the same as it did when you first made contact with the kozaks, only more grey. You and yours are hustled inside by the leader of the warband, inside you catch sight of Elim, hanging off one side, though he only gives you a cursory nod.

The ataman is the same as ever as well, standing well above the rest. The leader has a few muted words with him, before he shoos the other centaur off, the centaur leaving with a salute. He turns to regard you. [My captain believes you have information about what troubles us. What do you know?]

[It appears that the Krasick Hussars were creating new hives by burying the bodies of regenerating fallen. Why they would do this is unknown to me. Your kozaks found us disposing of one such hive.]

You say, keeping it short and to the point. You'll have to thank Veles later for hte

[Krasick becoming openly hostile. It would fit what I have been told of their movements. Though I cannot discern their aim.]

[They are also responsible for the destruction of my hold.] Artyom says, unprompted.

The ataman focuses on the hussar. [Your hold? Purobka I take it?] The hussar simply nods. [No means to prove this, I take it.] Artyom shakes his head. The ataman lets out a sigh. {Of course not.]

[What difference does that make, everyone suspects them. Even those in Bralin.] You interject, bringing the focus back to you.

[Krasick is crucial in the creation of fine goods, and their pockets run deep. They have influence in most, if not all of the major holds. They are also skilled negotatiors. The testimony of a lone hussar does not a sanction make. Barring conclusive proof, we would not be able to bring anything to Sigismund's throne. Speaking of, how is my neice doing?]

You pause, taken aback at the way the conversation has shifted. [Tatiana is fine, last I saw her at least. She's the one who tended to Artyom.]

[Good. It is good that she is well away from here, if krasick continues their maneuvering.]

[Are you expecting to come to blows with the krasick?]

[I am not expecting anything.] The oversized centaur says cryptically. [I only make plans for possibilities.]

[What's tatiana's role in all of this?] You ask, causing him to frown.

[A plan for an eventuality that I should hope not come to pass.]

[What, your replacement?] He actually laughs at that.

[Not mine. No. But a replacement she will be. I just hope it will not come to it. In any case, any move agains the krasick we may make would be seen as hostility from the other houses. Even if we were in the right it is not our business. Purobka's fall doesn't give us cause either.] he says, the last bit more toward artyom than anyone else.

[But they can get away with all this, just because they've kept it dark?]

He nods, [They obviously mean to destroy our credibility if not bait us into attacking them. More attacks from the fallen. If we cannot uphold our pledge of protection, the holds will not be beholden to their tithe. Food will be a scarcity.]

[So they mean to starve you out.]

He nods, [The worst part is they have a point. Krasick's hold is in an area we cannot often patrol, and as they have minimal in the way of food exports, our treaty with the other szlachta precludes them. Their hussars take on the fallen as best they can, but lately the fiends have increased in number. I believe they seek to make it look even worse, so that they can take our place.]

You don't know what to say to that, the centaur obviously has a mind for politics, and if anything, seems resigned to his troubles, rather than worried.

I get what you're saying, but the amount of points I spend to have a custom mech is static, based on weight class, regardless of what upgrades I put into it, so I might as well get the maximum bang for my buck and go Endosteel, CASE, DHS, etc. Yes, the endosteel will make repairs worse down the road, but that isn't the end of the world. The core dilemna is that I can either have a 4/5 pilot in a fully pimped out custom thunderbolt or a 2/3 in a stock. If I go for the custom there's no point in half-assing it as I spend the same amount of points anyway, and while yes, it ups the BV, that will be reflected in the OPFOR, not the cost to my pilot skills.

He scoffs, [Lest you wish to brave the wasteland and find what is spawning these fallen, or have a way to keep us fighting should the szlachta pull support. I do highly doubt it. In any case, I offer what little shade and rest I can within the city.] He says, dismissing you.

Filing out, you confer with the others.

"We had best get some food, see if we can't barter for supplies to get us back." Veles says

"What about the offer, he obviously needs help." Marie responds.

"We are not in any condition to venture into the wastes as we are." he counters, "If we do, we are to be prepared."

"That dangerous are they?" You ask him as he hands a piece of his ration bread to his dog.

"The degenerate trolls run rampant through the wastes. Worse than the badlands. It is not enough to prepare for combat, but to expect it."

"Then aren't we in danger here?"

"Not really, they may attack, but the bulk of them hardly ever leave the wastes proper."

You think back to the hordes you've encountered, and grimace at the prospect of the masses not even being 'the bulk' of the monsters.

[I believe it would be best to find some way to support the Kozaks.] Artyom says, finally. [Lest you can assemble a great group to venture into the wastes, it would be follow to wander in there.]

The group wanders through the camp, until you find the familiar merchant outpost near the edge of the thoroughfare. Veles haggles out a price while you make yourself comfortable. Unsurprisingly the place is near vacant. Apparently the Szlachta merchants don't dare come out this far. Even with the two days of travelling you did with the centaurs to get here, its nearly dinner by the time you actually managed to arrive at Ursus.

"Do you it possible for us to provide support to Ataman in a manner other than mounting an expedition ourselves? Like financial aid or supplies or something?" You ask Veles after he finishes haggling.

"I think so, though they are sticklers about charity. They would want something to give you in return."

"I guess we'll have to have a look around, see if there is anything we can trade for."

Artyom and Marie elect to stay behind to watch valuables, as you and Veles make your way through the shops. It is vastly different than the last time you went through, and its not just the crowds. Their move this close to the wastelands has sent the kozaks into a survival state of mind. Gone are the knicknacks and jewelry that they seemed to entise the szlachta traders with, and the selection is almost exclusively weaponry. If the sigils on the hilts and blades are any indication, the Kozaks have decided to focus on runes. Given the behavior of the fallen, and their aversion to fire. You can't blame them.

You manage to haggle for some food, some kind of pork stew served in a bread bowl. You end up making several passes through the merchant section, and the few manned stalls are almost exclusively weapons or food. There are some that you recognize as the jewelry stand, but its been hastily converted into food stand as well.

Disheartened, you head back to the 'inn' seeing that Artyom and Marie finishing up their meal as well.

"Any luck?" the harpy calls.

"Not really, they've got a lot of runed weapons, but nothing we could really trade with at the moment."

"The mages might be interested in the runes, but I dunno."

Veles responds, "The Kozaks have very good metallurgy skills. More than a few of their smiths find work in the szlachta holds, making the weapons for the hussars. I know not what your people have, but it might be something of note."

"Well, its something to think about, surely." Marie says, before adding, "What's the plan from here Miss?"

>>
>>42787506
Supportin.

Although I have to ask as it just occurred to me now, did we see any runed bullets? Are those even a thing? Because if the zombies are getting uppity and runed weapons are how to deal with them, getting some runic rounds for our rifle wouldn't be a bad idea.
>>
>>42787592
They don't have guns, they do have runed crossbow bolts though.
>>
>>42787592
You probably could commission them, but the centaurs do not have firearms at the moment so it would be kind of hard to make bullets.
>>
>>42787636
Oh, right! How is the surplus arms market right now? I figure we could perhaps sell some old falling block guns along with ammo for swords if the swords do well on the domestic market.
>>
>>42787689
Given the phoenix 'invasion' and the guerrilla campaign they've been leading, the market for weapons is pretty active. Guns are available, but the prices are high.
>>
>>42787827
Ok, in the historic time equivalent, there would be musket to metallic cartridge conversion rifles on the market as major powers switched to dedicated metallic cartridge rifles in either repeater or falling block form. Is there such a thing here?
>>
>>42787925
The UFK is a bit ahead of that curve, mind you. The Arma Nitor alone use a modified falling block percussion cap rifle that they have used for quite some time. I'd say yes that there still is quite the market, and production has ramped up a bit now that tensions with the phoenix have reached a boiling point.

"Here or back home Miss Masterson?" Marie says

"Well, the prices of Silks has shot up, namely because the business with the Phoenix Empire. I can't imagine the Kozaks getting a hold of any of that easily. Good Steel maybe, since the orcs in the north have the monopoly there I can't say for sure. I never looked."

"Let's purchase a couple of swords to test the market at home. It isn't one that I know well, but if worst comes to worst, we could make use of the blades."

With that, you grab Marie and Artyom entrusting the bags with the old snake, as you head out to the weapon stalls. Between her and Artyom, you manage to pick out probably the best examples of Kozak craftsmanship you can find. It takes some doing however, and you end up using all your barter materials to pick them up. There was a third, but three ended up being well outside of your price range.

Package in tow, you spend the night in the traders outpost, thankfully left alone this time, and in the morning you set out for home. Veles leading the way

Travel is uneventful, as you proceed away from the where the grey and brown sands meet. The trip itself is uneventful, though you do see more squads of cossacks head out and back into the badlands, presumably to counteract Krasick's sabatoge.

You manage to avoid any trolls, but at the same time the going is slow, with you in unfamiliar territory. Veles even looks unsure, looking consulting one his trinkets as a guide. You ask him about it and he explains its that thing he was tinkering with a while back. Apparently it should point towards his lair, regardless of where you are. You leave him to his business and consult with your other comrades.

If the revelation that not much can be done about Purobka has hit Artyom, he hasn't shown it, simply giving noncommitttal answers like he always has keeping his guard up as his brace of weapons stand waiting to be used. The outfitting you did at Bralin seems to have put a little life in his step though. And he seems pleased with that at least.

As for Marie, she seems just happy to be out and exploring, occasionaly doing flights up to get the lay of the land and try and point out any incoming threats. None really show up, even by the time you decide to make camp. You pull first watch this time, and even then it is eerily quiet, as if there was naught around for miles, despite evidence to the contrary.

You're eventually relieved, and you fall into a fitful sleep, trying to dream up ways to fix the centaurs issues, and maybe get this trade route working again.

You're wakened by the smell of... bacon?

You open your eyes to the sight of Veles and Marie nonchalantly tending to a boar hanging from a spit above the campfire, as an upset Artyom tends to one of his blades. You look questioningly over towards Veles.

<Your Szlachta friend happened across a boar encroaching on the camp.> He says low in snake cant. <Skewered it front to end with his blade. Only issue is he nicked, or rather ruptured the guts. He's trying to clean the stink off his blades.>

Either way, you're treated to the taste of proper meat for the first time in a while, sure it isn't anything at all like Tai's cooking, but it sure beats out the rich mystery bread you've been subsisting off of for almost a week now.

Artyom seems keen on keeping his catch, having finally finished cleaning his weapons. He carries the partially cooked animal with him as you make towards the valley, and home.

You're starting to get a better feel for the surroundings, and while you're hopelessly lost, at least you're hopelessly lost in a familiar area. Veles reckons we are 5 good days travel away from his lair.

Artyom volunteers for first shift, wanting to finish smoking the animal and tending to it through the night.

You pull morning watch, and fall asleep to the same smells you woke up to.

You spend your watch ignoring the smell of the near completed smoked ham. At least until Artyom woke up and started slicing bits off of it, at which point you set upon it as much as modesty would allow. Your group followed suit, putting a sizable dent in what was left of the animal as it was promptly broken down and stored in wax paper for the coming trip. Your old pack was elected as the sacrificial lamb, having all the meat stored in in it. Artyom still elects to carry the burden, leaving you with your new pack.

The meat seems to have given a bit of a morale boost to the group, as you make excellent time, and Veles manages to find a shortcut through the badlands that lets you bypass a ravine. All in all, you wager you've cut a day off of your journey.

You set up camp, still free of troll sightings, a fact that makes you somewhat wary. You pull middle shift for guard and you decide to call it a night early, leaving the rest of clean up the camp.

You wake to the sound of frantic shouts and the smell of acrid burning. Hurriedly you roll over and eject your rifle from its case. Powering out and into the camp you bowl over two degenerate trolls as you get your bearings. Artyom is hot on your heels, dispatching the pair with the long blade as he tries to get his bearings. You are greeted to the sight of Veles casting a plume of flame into the darkness. From the intermittent bursts of light, you catch a glimpse of a massive mass of trolls, being both drawn and repelled by the light and heat of the flame. Marie is already away, using a burning branch as a makeshift cudgel.

The darkness makes it hard to see, but the trolls have no overrun the camp quite yet, having opted to move towards the nearest source of heat. Veles.

Meh. Got a 14 on magic, and a 12 on shooting. At least nothing extraordinarily bad will happen, and we'll still get XP.

>12 and 14

You promptly expell your magazine into the oncoming horde, doing your level best to try and at least give Veles some support. You know the rounds hit because you can hear the keening of wounded trolls as your shots connect. This is alarming, because you know from your shots that some of them were bound to have missed, only to hit another in the mass of 'life' currently attacking you.

Marie takes to the air, branch in claw as she illuminates the battlefield, diving low and trying to ignite some of the trolls further back, giving you a silhouette to shoot. Eschewing a reload, you stow your rifle and begin channelling, sending gouts of flame that sputter and splash against the horde. The damage is considerable, but you feel the strain of casting take its toll and you break from that to reload your rifle.

Artyom in the meantime has pulled two of his blades, the longer estoc, and a broadsword that he empties a vial of something along the blade. He then places it into the fire, and the length of the blade ignites. The hussar becomes a veritable one man cavalry charge has he barrels into the mass, cleaving through or impaling all that gets in his way as he heads towards the gout of flame that is Veles.

The horde proves too much for the old snake as it finally manages to knock the catalyst blade out of his grasp. You see the silvered thing flash as it is flung back towards you, before it its trodden underfoot by the stampeding trolls. You watch in horror as the fallen begin to dogpile the old snake. Artyom still nearly two meters from his position.

You have the presence of mind to shed your duster, lest you shred that too as you extend your claws and spines, and fling yourself into the horde. You rend through the tough flesh of the fallen as you hack and slash your way towards Veles. Helped in no small part by the wake of Artyom as he bulls his way through the horde. You see him lifting the estoc he's been using as a lance, seeing no less than five squirming trolls impaled along its length. He removes them via the flaming broadword, cutting cleanly along the 'flat' of the other edgless blade, shearing the bodies and setting them alight as they fall away. Lowering the blade like a lance, the Hussar doubles his speed as he approaches the mass of trolls, under which lies form of Veles.

You're quick enough to keep pace with the centaur's charge, though with hardly the finesse of the warrior you fight alongside. As you approach Veles, you see the lamia spines extend, skewering or sending those atop him flying. Dahz bounds past you, blade in mouth has she rushed towards her master. You see Veles take the blade in hand, the other having claws extended as he bodily shakes the remaining trolls off him. The three of you stand in a semicircle, backs to each other as the trolls surround you. You catch sight of Marie, who has apparently lost her burning stick flying back towards the camp.

The horde recovers, and begins to charge you.

You begin channelling another ignition, as you see the trolls proceed to swarm the larger targets, piling on to Veles and completely englulfing Artyom, spent after his charge. Your flames lick out and sear any that approach from your angle as you watch the pair of them struggle to break from the hold. From the camp you see Marie lift up, weighed down by a pair of cooking pots, as she begins to wing heavily towards you. The harpy begins to drop a faint stream of liquid from the pot, which just catches the edge of your flame. The liquid ignites, spattering everywhere as the flame licks toward the harpy. In response she goes into a shallow dive, trailing the contents of the pot just fast enough to avoid the flames reaching them as she does widening spirals around your groups positions. Veles shakes the last of those assailing him off, and you wince as you see him snap a bent claw off his hand. Artyom seems to have more trouble, at least two of the beasts entangled with his armor. He eventually shakes free, but at the cost of burying the flaming blade hilt deep into one of his assailants. The blades flame dies with a sizzle.

Marie's spiral of fire expands outward, either through propogation of the liquid or her judicious fire, and before long there is a massive ring of fire surrounding you. What few trolls that aren't writhing ablaze start charging your position.

I gotta call it here, didn't think you'd be running THIS long heh.

Anyway try and release a controlled amount of flame to cover our comrades. Veles might have a trick he could use we need to cover him.
>>
Question: how high are the corpse piles now? I mean, we've probably killed at LEAST 50 by now in total.
>>
>>42792136
Ash piles are getting up there. The trolls break down rapidly when exposed to fire. Especially the corpses.

You focus your flames on the remaining trolls, scorching them into cinders before turning back to regard your comrades. Veles looks the wwrost hit, nursing his injured hand and bearing the scarts and bites of the fallen. The next is Artyom, who looks more dishevelled than anything else, armor somewhat askew as he goes around, making double shure that the trolls are dead or soon to be so. Marie is relatively unscathed. You go back to the camp to reclaim your duster, and find her setting fire to the contents of the pots.

"Mixed lamp oil and water. Flames made the water boil which popped the burning oil off to the others." She says cheerfull, headless of the scream from one of the surviving trolls meeting Artyom's thorough cleaning methods.

You huff in frustration. Everything was going so smoothly for a bit there. Wasn't it. Sleep hits you before you hit the ground.
