>You are a villager girl named Ellen from a small village in the nation of Neir, on the continent of Teege. As a member of the local militia/guard, you were trained in swordplay. Your fighting style is best compared to the hero class, though you're officially considered a knight of Neir. Occasionally, you will shift to another character's POV for a thread or part of a thread if the events they witness are important to know/influence. This will be revealed in the thread's first update if it's the case.

>Your particular goal in a given thread changes often, but at the moment the overarching plot involves the impending war with Dain, as it and its allies start to take action.

A dark-armored prince sighs as this stronghold of his uprising falls. What his mood is, none can say, thanks to his obscured face. Only a few of the Emperor's Flight remain, but... But they answered to someone he cannot trust. He sends all but the leader of their few remaining number to neighboring towns still loyal to his cause, rousing more rebels to act.

His younger brother grows increasingly anxious, but now is no longer the time for such things. He rushes into the city of Barst.

A woman with an ancestral bow and a stolen birthright takes action, accompanied by a heavily-armored knight who a dear friend claims was once a waste of space.

Our heroine and her own subgroup continue towards the city, but are most definitely going to be late to the party. Here's hoping that they can make do without a Hero, some wolves, some nomads and everything they have that can fly. She has a necromancer to deliver, after all.

You and Yvette both noticed the various wyvern riders heading out in various directions, though she was the one to address the crowd over it.

"Undoubtedly, they have been sent to gather reinforcements from elsewhere in the region. We'll need to act quickly and secure the city unless we wish for things to get... Very dangerous and bloody. Archers, recall that Derrick, who was not spotted among the leaving Emperor's Flight members, carries Iote's Shield, so your arrows may end up doing... Significantly less than normally anticipated."

She was in a fight with General Derrick earlier this very battle, and she lost quite handily, but was still insistent on helping you lead this leg of the fight after a quick patching-up from Nat.

"Uh... Yvette..."

The paladin turns towards you, "what is it, Prince Garrus?"

"Just... Take it, er, take it a bit easier, alright? I'd hate for anything to happen to you, after what almost went down with Derrick..."

She closes her eyes and sighs. "I've sworn to spend my life protecting you. I can't very easily just... Stop doing so. However, should it mean staying alive, I won't overexert myself."

"Uh... O-okay, thanks..." You aren't really sure if that was a yes or a no, but you don't feel like now is the time to clarify.

Yvette sees to it that Victoria is covered by Reese, Gorman, Laurina... Basically, one of your most important archers should you NEED to fight Lars is covered.

Quidel speaks to his brother, Nahuel, about revenge and the like, and they ride off together, while you and Salia stick with Yvette.

The three of you rush through the town, quickly finding yourselves accosted by about half a dozen rebels, mostly soldier-class with a single Halberdier. Yvette points a lance at them threateningly and commands, "lay down your weapons and stand aside!"

They don't, at least not immediately.

"Please, all of you, I... I don't want to keep fighting my countrymen like this! Just... Please listen to Yvette and stop this..."

The halberdier refuses on the behalf of her little group, saying, "keep talking while we stick your heads on a spear for Prince Lars!"

Reluctantly, you ready your Regal Axe as the Halberdier approaches you... and is quickly interrupted by Yvette stepping between you two.

Salia fires arrows at the five soldiers, shooting down one as the rest approach her, bar one who has taken an interest in you.

Well, er... Hopefully they'll disperse if their subleader is taken care of!

You face the halberdier alongside Yvette, and the soldier after you in particular joins in. In a twist of fate, you're the one who swings the fatal axe down upon the halberdier as Yvette finishes off the soldier who was after you!

In a much less pleasant twist of fate, your idea was clearly incorrect, and your sister cries out in immense pain as three of the other soldiers stab the inexperienced archer at once.

All of this happened in a manner of seconds, but had you spent them differently... Gods, you find yourself shaking your head. Now isn't the time for doubts! You're filled with some untold newfound rush of energy as you swing into Salia's assailants, turning towards your sister and holding her up as she bleeds out in your arms.

"Yvette, get Salia out of here!"

This is... the second time you've raised your voice in recent history, but this time you feel nothing but urgency as Yvette quickly forces a healing concoction down your sister's throat, hopefully preventing her death for long enough for her wounds to be healed.

"Don't you do anything foolish either, Prince Garrus."

You nod resolutely, gripping your axe as Yvette and Salia ride off.

"I heard Salia screaming!" you hear Quidel say as he and his brother approach you, the same you who is currently in the midst of cutting down a mercenary-class who raised his sword towards you threateningly.

"Is... He alright?" Nahuel asks, but Quidel's face is only filled with worry.

He rides up to you, dismounts, and grabs your shoulders.

You get a grip on yourself for a moment, breathing in and explaining. "Salia was with Yvette and I, and these guys with spears came... Some of them got to Salia, but..."

And he shakes you. "You two let Salia get hurt?! She has no way to defend herself up close, you KNOW that!"

"Brother, things like this happen in the heat of battle," Nahuel replies before turning towards you, "which way did they go?"

"Yvette? Uh... That way, I think... You're technically under my command, but... You can go see her if you like and they don't say no." You point, and Quidel is quick to hop onto his horse again and ride off.

"Far from the battlefield is the best place for him..." Nahuel reflects as he rides up to you, "he has the heart of a noble warrior, but no common sense when he's been angered."

"Yeah, that was... I should've been watching her, but I've been really concerned with Yvette lately, and I wasn't thinking, and..."

"You needn't justify it to me. Things happen, and we can only hope she survives."

You and Nahuel start fighting through remaining rebels in the city, and unlike your sister, as a Nomadic Trooper, Nahuel is perfectly capable with a sword at short range.

He sees the form of a Wyvern Lord approaching your duo in particular, aiming and firing at them... Only for the arrow hitting them barely seeming to faze rider or wyvern.

"It was... Worth a shot," Nahuel says as he switches to his Steel Sword, Derrick having appropriated a Shockstick alongside his previous Brave Sword. He is also accompanied by a rebel of the General class equipped with a not-so-ordinary Ridersbane and approaching as quick as his weighed-down legs can carry him.

"Prince Garrus, I've never heard of you being so... Violent," Derrick remarks, referring to your sudden influx of kills to your name, "I... Had to see it to believe it." He closes his eyes for a moment, shaking his bald head and turning to his companion, "Allow me to face Prince Garrus myself."

You immediately turn your Regal Axe on the armored fellow, knowing exactly what sort of disaster his weapon choice would spell for Quidel's brother. You're not sure you've ever actually turned your Regal Axe on a heavily-armored or a horse-riding opponent, so it's never come up, but... It is designed to be effective towards them, not unlike a Rapier or other local equivalents.

"Never mind, then," Derrick says, midway through dismounting to duel you, "not one for flashy honorable duels, are we?" He returns to the saddle of his wyvern, pointing his Shockstick and attempting to jolt you. Meanwhile, Nahuel has finished off the General via the sizable hole you just cleaved in his armor.

A few more rebels of assorted classes approach, though Stefyn, Dama, and several Garou coincidentally end up in your area at the same time.

You stare down the Wyvern Lord on his mount as chaos erupts around you, clutching your axe.

He apologetically shocksticks a wolf who tried to attack him, leaving you a perfect opportunity to leap at him swinging.

He seems a bit caught off-guard, him and his dragon both being slightly damaged by your axe, and you manage to dodge both of his immediate retaliating Shockstick strikes.

Well, as a lighter form of what >>42806552 said... Since it was only one person who decided her fate, I decided that it wouldn't be fair to off her, so I threw on the second post where picking the right thing could save her at a temporary cost.

If she'd have died from something so easily, then it would've been a "scripted to happen sometime during this battle" demise anyway, but I'll say outright that I didn't intend for it to happen, and figured losing your Jeigan for the battle was punishment enough for getting your Est fucked up but saving her.
>>

>losing your Jeigan for the battle was punishment enough for getting your Est fucked up but saving her.
....Wut?
>>
>>42806617
Archetype terminology, named after characters who are considered the first example of the type in the series.

In the games proper, the Jeigan was an old prepromoted guy who was really strong, but had absolutely shit growths and, unless you got absurdly lucky, would start to be overshadowed by the early-midgame (see: Yvette after a dose of Dracozombie breath. I didn't make her TOO weak and shitty since I like her, but the sentiment is there and she's known it awhile).

Est was this girl who joined really late at a low level with a lot of potential though, ironically, she wasn't worth it at all in the remakes, since other units were made SO much better than they once were. While the OG was a pegasus knight, they've been different classes and genders throughout the franchise's history.

>(see: Yvette after a dose of Dracozombie breath. I didn't make her TOO weak and shitty since I like her, but the sentiment is there and she's known it awhile).

>>42806554

Okay, you have to put all of your effort into dodging, leaving you too winded after his four-strike assault to retaliate before he can pull away.

Stefyn, apparently wielding a Wind Edge, takes his attention off of you with a strike the guy at least feels enough to turn his attention to the Swordmaster. He's only fast enough to get two (failed) strikes in before Stefyn retaliates, though, and Dama also gets in on the "fun."

You see Nahuel in the distance, drawing the fire of a squad of archers. One of Corneria's magic-users is healing him and his horse whenever they take damage from one of them, but the last one standing thinks to shoot the anonymous healer square in the face.

Nahuel gives you a wave of appreciation before riding closer and drawing his sword.

"So we're all facing this Wyvern Lord, are we? Iote's Shield or not, I would like in on this."

You seek out Victoria and her current companions, perhaps wondering if they've found Lars yet.

What you find instead is Gorman, apparently leading Reese, Laurina, and Victoria in the middle of a heated encounter with several enemy Heroes.

Surprisingly enough, both groups are in a stalemate until you show up and turn the tides (in your friends' favor, of course).

"Such powerful opponents..." Victoria says as she shoots a distracted swordsman, "it likely means our primary opponent draws near."

"Just stick behind me and riddle Lars with holes, duchess!" Reese boasts as he bodychecks and knocks someone out, retrieving the lance he apparently dropped in the confusion.

Reese frowns. "Yes, I... Suppose you're right, but I was tasked with guarding Victoria, so..."

"You're dismissed from doing so. Focus on protecting anyone who's been injured." You vocally direct Reese to where you sent Yvette and Salia.

"Should we go too?" Laurina asks you on her and Gorman's behalf.

"Also, keep in mind that the Deadlord Bovis, he has quite the resistance," Gorman says.

Victoria leads you through the city's alleys, finding an empty, hidden-away lot where Bolse and Bovis are. He doesn't seem to mind, aside from waving his sword around ineffectually at Derrick as he drops to the ground.

Derrick pauses and nods, dismounting. "I trust your friend not to interfere, then."

Victoria nods. "No, no, I understand the importance of resting the nation's fate on shows of machismo."

You draw your axe, he draws his Brave Sword, and Bolse blindsides him with a blast of Luna, knocking him the hell out right then and there. Derrick's wyvern stares in confusion, but the deaf necromancer loudly (by his usually-quiet standards, so in other words at an ordinary tone of voice) explains, "no time... "C'mon, guys! Everyone, let's go!" You demand, gesturing to show that, yes, you mean Bovis and Bolse too.

"I cannot walk."

"I didn't ask!"

That being said, you do nervously pet Derrick's wyvern before approaching Bovis, helping carry him on your back. You've got more strength than people would give you credit for, so you grab Bolse's hand, start running in the direction the Deadlord mentioned, and find yourself face-to-face with Lars, his hair showing its natural blue as he stands over Katina, who pleads with him. Logan and a pair of Bael intimidate away any rebels who might have bright ideas about his charge's current position.

"Lars, I know you're a good person... A-and we're finding Paula! Princess Eva, she's probably already got her by now, and she's... She's in this region!"

"Lars, I... I see how important this is to you," Katina says, "but... I still trust you so much. I want to be by your side, whatever that is!"

Logan turns around, "Wh-what're you saying, Lady Katina?!"

Lars shakes his head. "I was younger than you when I made... A very poor decision. I won't allow you to go down the same road over a childish infatuation."

"L-Lars, please, I... It's not about that, it's... I know the sort of person you are, and..."

"Logan, get her out of here."

Logan nods at the request of the Sage, picking up Katina while she kicks and shouts and literally dragging her away, accompanied by his Bael.

Bolse is very confused, as Bovis' current status leaves him unable to sign.

"Sorry about that..." Lars says to you and Victoria before opening a spellbook. "I take it you want to get to business quickly?"

You set Bovis down, finally giving him a chance to "speak" to Bolse.

Now why are you doing this?

What have you been working so hard for?

"Why would I WANT to? The necromancer we've been fighting is... Probably Paula, by a LOT of people's accounts, and by now Eva's surely captured her. Katina was right about that. The only reason I sought you out is because Bolse mentioned that Katina followed you!"

"..."

"What're you working so hard for, Lars? Why are you fighting us?"

As he starts to say, Victoria aims her bow to try to hit him. In his completely-unarmored state, he dodges effortlessly and throws her into a wall with a simple blast of Elwind, before continuing, "if I may." He clears his throat. "The answer may disappoint you. I consider myself a loving person, considerate, pragmatic... And have known since I was Paula's age that this is a vile place, filled with bandits, petty political squabbles, brutes put in charge. It was only when I traveled to Dain that I learned that this problem extends across the damned continent."

"S-so, it's just... Power, is all there is to it?" Victoria says, getting up and clutching Ronan, her bow.

"And who are the ones supporting the Dory family? You're acting like you're all so noble, but you'll align with vicious pirates just to one-up your enemies."

>A. That's different

way to late at night to come p with a good retort, maybe wait til next time for morep eople?
>>
>>42809548
Garrus doesn't really have a way with words. If no one thinks of anything substantial to verbally strike back, it'd be perfectly in-character.

I was hoping to get back to Ellen next thread.

I wonder how the Ulir subplot's been going since it stopped showing up.

>C. Retort! (write-in)
This is coming from the one who turned a child into a necromancer.
We didn't start this fight, and we've been sparing everyone we can, all this blood is on your hands Lars. Don't paint me as the bad one here.

Father is dead because your war. Our sister stabbed by your rebels, the Wolfman tribe in chaos because of your necromancers. I know you're not a bad man personally but this war is yours and all the innocent blood is your responsibility.
What good have you done lars? How are you any better than the bandits you talk about?
>>
>>42809582
Well that's kinda fucking us over isn't it? Most of the smart anons who come up with good stuff are gone by this time at night.

This sounds pretty good.

I'm still around, but mostly lurking due to voting poorly and being called a drama-fag.

okay trying something here with my hypocritical-ass connection

"W-well, you're still the one who turned Bolse here into a Necromancer!"

"I didn't. He was trained by... I don't know who trained him, except that they're connected to Eva's father."

"R-regardless, we've been trying to keep things right, while you've let your fair share of horrible things happen for the sake of your grab for power!"

Lars flinches slightly, not having expected you to continue. "Well... Still, you're one to talk about standing idly by, when-"

"You called me out on that first! Our dad, he's dead because of this!"

"And I'm glad for that. He was the worst of this 'might-makes-right'-"

"-and rebels working with you impaled Salia! OUR sister, Lars! I don't even know if she's still alive right now, but that's going to be on your hands, too! Your little ploy with the Garou, they lost their matriarch and a respected public figure, all thanks to your stirring things up!"

"The Tarvosians condemned them to those mountains alongside OUR ancestors! So I've heard, this, at the damn least, has caused this burnt bridge to finally start being mended!"

"Lars, I... I know you're not a bad person! Only one Fire Dragon was still even trying to fight, and seemed to be working on her own, so you have compassion, but... Things like letting Lord Phineas become a Deadlord, allowing Victoria to rot and suffer for years, and then throwing her into someplace even worse until she agreed to support you!"

"I saved her from execution!"

"Even then! Y-you're... You're a hypocrite! If you want to make things right, then stop going about it like this! You're not set down this path!"

Lars is silent a moment, before closing his eyes. "You're right... Maybe I have done horrible things, but... I'll be remembered for what it resulted in!"

>A. Can't dodge forever. Keep attacking.
>B. Lars, you've lost. Please
>C. Remain silent
>D. Write-in action/dialogue

>>B. Lars, you've lost. Please

>>D. Write-in action/dialogue
You want a legacy? You want to be remembered! If you wanted a statue commemorating your greatness, I'll have one built back at home. But what you're doing in order to be remembered has caused so much pain. What's the point of it all, when it's only causing heartache between your family and friends?
>>
>>42810326
>>42810334
>>42810374
"Lars, you've lost... Please, just... Don't keep this up. S-Surrender, please... The legacy you'll be leaving behind if you keep fighting... It's only causing heartache, perpetuating a war that ended eight years ago."

You run out of steam and return to your usually mousy self, but Lars looks at the ground, closes his eyes, shakes his head and sighs. "There... Really is no benefit to my continuing here, unless I plan on killing every last one of you. All I can do is... Is sit and wait until reinforcements arrive."

Lars resists all attempts at capturing him, even without even attempting to hide. Your brother's a speed demon without his armor. It's part of what made "Mimon" famous.

"They'll be coming soon," he semi-smugly reassures everyone from time to time, trading dirty looks with General Derrick as he and Gorman drink and try to catch up in a tavern.

Little did he know that a certain group that had separated from this one a few days ago was at work preventing what he's so certain of.

A male garou jokes to a tall blonde, "and here I thought we'd miss out on all the real action," elbowing the Heroine affectionately.

>To be continued next thread
I am so so sorry for the technical difficulties, and the ending would've gone on for longer if it weren't for them.

Thank you so much for sticking around, and as always our ask.fm and twitter are qmgrandflocto.

I'll be around to answer questions, provided my internet doesn't fuck itself again.

I wanna say we're closing out the second act here, with Lars' defeat and all. Here's hoping I can deliver on these last few however many threads of Ellen's adventure.

Citing the overall prologue as her time in Tarvos Valley, which ended on the note of her first promotion, and the first act concluding with her escape from Aum/reuniting with the others/hooking up with Zoe/promoting a second time/introducing a lot of new characters in the span of five-odd threads.

The defeat of the longest-lasting antagonist so far AND the impending promotion of Garrus seems like a pretty good place to say "end of act 2," or at least within the next few threads.
>>
Thanks for running Octo.

Do you like to bet on which options we choose? Are you usually right?

What quests do you follow
>>
>>42810617
Sometimes I have a pretty good idea of what's going to happen, but I'm still surprised plenty of times (be it for better or worse), especially thanks to the wildcard of write-ins almost always being available.

I used to follow this one DBZ-themed quest with an absurdly overpowered protagonist, but I sort of stopped being able to keep up with it awhile before Grandflaw and I started this one.

Thanks for playing.
>>
>>42810659
Was it possible to talk lars down 100%
>>
>>42810682
I never want to say "no" outright, but the answer is pretty often "I certainly couldn't think of anything and neither could anyone playing."

He'll probably chill a bit for his baby sister when Team Eva saves the day.
>>
>>42810720
Looking forward to it
>>
I would've ended the thread on the note of Eva+the rest returning and however Garrus greets her would be up to the thread, but that would've cluttered the last post when I had to shove everything important into one last post.

Already I can see that it's for the best that I didn't do that, if only because thread 40 is going to be back to Ellen and the rest anyway and having them show up would remove a lot of the suspense/guarantee a success.

It will be entirely possible for Ellen and co. to fuck up immensely/only partially succeed, is my point, and the love interest remains the only person I can guarantee the survival of.

>>42810834
I'll try not to kill anyone

Sometimes it just sort of happens. You always have your anonymity.
