You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

"You know, for an old man who lives on an abandoned island, you certainly do have an impressive aircraft collection." You whistle as Pops takes you on a tour through Sand Island Base's old hangars, which he had appropriated for his own use. There were various small civilian craft stored in them. Nothing too special, but impressive nonetheless. However, you did note the gutted husks of military craft stored in a couple of hangars, no doubt left behind by the cleanup crews after being written off as total losses.

"Well, I had a lot of free time." Pops chuckles. "So you two have a good nights' sleep? I know we don't exactly have five star accommodations here..."

"Oh, no, things were perfectly fine." You say quickly.

"Absolutely fine." Jager says quickly in support.

"Huh, all right." Pops nods and then grins. "Well, you guys want to see something REALLY neat?"

"Sure!" You nod eagerly.

"Just follow me, then."

Pops leads you and Jager over to another hangar, though unlike the other ones, you see that this one is locked. Pops pull out a large key ring and unlocks the massive padlock on the door before pushing it open, and you gasp at the sight.

Three X-02 Wyverns in mint condition.

The next thing you know, you're being picked up off the ground by Jager, your vision hazy and blurry.

"I-uh-what happened?" You mumble.

"You fainted." Jager frowns. "Is there something special about these planes?"

"WHAAAAAAAT?!" Both you and Pops gasp. You turn your gaze to Pops, who gives you a grim nod, letting you take this one.

"Jager, these are only some OF THE MOST FAMOUS PLANES EVER TO FLY." You explain, getting back on your feet and and shaking Jager around relentlessly. "The Demons of Randgriz used these planes to stop SOLG from falling onto Oured! They practically saved the world in these planes!"

"Ah, now I think I remember them." Jager nods. "Sorry, I'm more of a ground guy."

"Obviously." Both you and Pops sigh.

"Anyways!" You turn back to Pops, stars in your eyes. "Where the heck did you get them?!?"

"Ah well, after that whole SOLG thing, everybody seemed to have forgotten about the Wyverns." Pops laughs. "After all, we had stolen them from Grunder Industries, and they were covertly manufactured, so they officially didn't exist. Everybody just kind of forgot about them, so I arranged to have them transported back here in case they were ever needed again. Been keeping my eye on them ever since."

"Amazing." You breathe. "But wait, where's the fourth one?"

"Oh, yeah, I lent that one out to a friend of a friend. They were in need of a good plane and, well, I figured why not? He seemed like a trustworthy enough fellow!"

You wonder if he was talking about Revenant, that freelance mercenary you had crossed paths with in what seemed like an eternity ago.

"Huh, cool." You nod and glance over to the Wyverns. "Hey, do you mind if I can touch them?"

"I don't see why not." Pops responds.

You step forward and gaze at the smooth composite skin of the Wyvern. You could only imagine what adventures and wonders both the plane and its pilots had seen all those years ago. Then, almost instinctively, without thinking, you open up your arms and press your face against the side of Wyvern in a really awkward looking hug, but you don't care. The cold skin of the plane stung your cheek, but it wasn't a bad feeling at all.

"I'll see you soon, guys." You whisper before pulling away. "So Pops, you got any other cool secrets hidden away here?"

"Heh, you know, there might be something-" Pops then pauses. "You hear that?"

"Yeah." Jager nods. "Helicopter rotors."

"You guys weren't followed here, were you?" Pops asks.

"OB?" You wonder.

"No, most likely the company." Jager shakes his head. "They probably tracked the plane and traced our path here."

Sure enough, you could see a trio of Blackhawks coming in on approach, the Artemis logo emblazoned on their sides.

"So what do we do?" Jager asks.

"We might as well see what they want." You sigh. "Come on."

You stride out the hangar and Jager follows close behind. The Blackhawks land, predictably enough, Samantha hops out of the lead one.

"Can you stop having emergencies on my vacation?" You sigh and roll your eyes.

"Sorry, I would've left you alone, I could help it, but it's important." Samantha sighs. "A high priority mission has come up, and Management wants nobody but the best on it. That means the both of you"

Sometimes being the best was a blessing and a curse...

"Well what is it?" You ask.

"Time sensitive. I'll brief you in the air." Samantha says and she leas to the side and narrows her eyes as she glances at the partially open hangar behind you. From this angle, she can't actually see the planes inside.

"You know, I wasn't planning on prying into your vacation plans, but considering you're on a closed down Osean airbase... Is something going on here...?" She asks suspiciously.

"Nope, nothing at all." You shake your head. "Right Jager? We were just totally doing innocent, not suspicious things!"

"That's right." Jager nods. "Nothing out of the ordinary."

"Hmmmm." Samantha looks at both of you suspiciously, not quite convinced. However, her haste works in your favor. "All right, whatever. Just get in the helo."

As the two of you board, you turn back one last to see Pops at the hangar door, waving and then giving you a quick salute. You respond with your own little salute before getting inside.

You were definitely coming back one day.

As the helicopter gains altitude, Samantha slides the door closed and faces you grimly.

"A few hours, we received a coded transmission from an OB pilot, I believe you know him as Babylon." Samantha explains.

You blink with recognition. He was one of the OB aces you regularly fought against.

"What does he want with us?" You ask.

"Surprisingly enough, he wants to defect." Samantha frowns. "He's trading important intel and technology in return for protection."

"That sounds like a trap if I've ever heard one." Jager growls.

"And it might be, but Corporate believes that the potential payoff is worth the risk." Samantha says. "He'll be taking off on a normal patrol in a few hours before making a break for friendly territory. You can bet OB will send everything they have after him, which is where you come in."

"So you want us to act as his air escort?" You sigh. "Well, I guess there's a first for everything."

"Wait, in a few hours?" Jager blinks. "Do we even have enough time to get back to the Pillar and prep?"

"Heh, who said we were going back to the Pillar?" Samantha gives a sly grin and points out the window.

And there you see the aerial battleship that you had helped capture earlier, airborne and fully repaired.

"Welcome to the Gullinbursti." Sam grins.

"Ah, so you've got the rest of the gang together." You note.

"That's right." Samantha nods. "Come on, we don't have a lot of time."

Samantha hops out and starts to lead you away.

"Jager, Tarin here will take you to the ready room. With this mission, there's a possibility you might need to be deployed on CSAR."

"Roger that." Jager gives you a nod and a squeeze on the hand before leaving.

"KarlaKarlaKarla!" Lara jumps up excitedly to you. "This thing is so AWWWEEEESSOOOOOOOME! I mean, it FLIES, and it CARRIES OTHER PLANES! LIKE A FLYING AIRCRAFT CARRIER!"

"Yes, I get it." You sigh and turn to Lilian and Amy. "How long as she been like this?"

"Ever since she stepped foot on the ship, I'm afraid." Lilian sighs.

"Yeah, she's been totally obsessed with this flying hunk of junk." Amy rolls her eyes.

"YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND." Lara grabs Amy by the shoulders. "EMMERIA NEVER GETS COOL SHIT LIKE THIS. LET ME HAVE MY MOMENT!"

Ah, that's right. Lara had to fight against these types of machines before. You guess the irony of now being based out of one was not lost upon her.

"All right girls, FOCUS." Samantha snaps. "We've got a mission soon and we need you all ready to launch! Karla, better radio down to Smokey what loudout you want. We loaded up your Morgan so it's hot and ready to go."

>Sorry about the delay there!

"Tell Smokey to load up the QAAMs." You say. "I got a feeling that they're going to send the best out."

"Got it." Samantha nods and hastily shows you a map while on the move. "This will be Babylon's projected route of escape. According to him, this is where OB's air defenses are the weakest."

You take a look at the map. You note that the terrain was extremely hilly and mountainous, with many twisting valleys, ravines, and canyons crisscrossing the are. It looked to be a really tough place to fly in.

"Due to the mountainous terrain, it's difficult to place SAM sites." Samantha explains. "And in a pinch, he can dive into the valleys to dodge enemy fire and radar."

"Except won't that make it harder for us to track him?" Lilian points out.

"Obviously, so let's hope it won't come to that." Samantha sighs. "However, regardless, we have intel that there are still ground forces and light AA units in the area. It might be wise that we have Amy deploy in her Warthog to handle those threats, but it's up to you.

"Amy, you good for going out in the Warthog?" You ask.

"You know I am." Amy grins and cracks her knuckles.

"All right, so I assume we're launching now?"

"Yes. We're on a tight schedule here." Samantha nods. "The moment Babylon deviates from his patrol path OB will go on the alert. Get loaded up and ready to go!"

The next few minutes are a blur of activity as you are hastily pushed through the ready room, quickly getting dressed in your flight suit and then basically shoved into your plane.

"All right, girls, I don't know if any of you are experienced in carrier-type ops, but taking off is simple." Smokey explains grumpily over the radio as his crew begins towing your planes out of the cramped hangar deck. "Once my boys hook you up to the catapult, all you need to do is throttle up and give he signal to launch. After that, the catapult does the rest."

"Umm... is this.... safe?" Amy asks nervously.

"Of course it is!" Smokey snaps. "Stop asking stupid questions!"

"Jeez, sorry." Amy grunts.

Your wingmates launch before you, and you watch warily as each plane is launched out of Gullinbursti. Lara of course whoops in joy, while Amy and Lilian scream in terror.

You manage to stay quiet when it's your turn to get launched, but you have the fight the feeling of your organs getting crushed flat from the sudden acceleration as your plane is vaulted forward. A split second later, all you see is the sky in front of you, with the Gullinbursti just a huge blip behind you on the radar.

"All right, girls." Samantha's voice buzzes over the radio. "We managed to launch a little head of schedule. We're supposed to wait for Babylon to give us the signal, but I don't see any reason to clear the area out of any possible hostiles, first.

"Would that make them suspicious?" Lilian asks.

"Maybe, but they're going to be going on alert anyways." Sam shrugs.

What the other anons said, but time for more detail.

SEAD is the task of suppressing enemy air defenses. That doesn't mean completely destroying them, but eliminating their radars is a major factor in this.

There are specific weapons designed for this task. These are Anti-Radiation (Guided) Missiles, the most famous of which is the AGM-88 HARM. When a radar radiates, it can be detected. These things will follow that in and hit the radar. Fun stuff indeed. One interesting case was a FF incident on a B-52, as it tracked on the tail gun's guidance radar.

I only one I know of off the top of my head is the one on the F-16I, the PAWS-2. Infrared sensor. There are a variety of them out there. There's also one on CH-46s. Or was it CH-53s? You and your wingmates circle in the air for the next few minutes, and you keep a close eye on your radar screen all the while.

"Loki, do you see anything?" You ask your AWACS.

"I'm picking up intermittent airborne contacts. That might be him." Loki announces. "I'm also detecting scattered movement in the mountains. Probably foot patrols."

"Stripes, back up Amy. Make sure nobody gets any ideas." You instruct your wingmate.

"Got it, Valk!" Lara says as her Eagle breaks off, staying in a protective pattern over Amy's Warhog.

"Come on, Angel!" You say to Lilian as you hit afterburners, boosting towards the oncoming OB fighters.

"Right behind you!" Lilian says.

"Be careful, Wild Cards! Those MiG-31s are armed with long range missiles!" Loki warns. "It looks like they're hanging behind the Su-35s. Probably to try and engage you from long range!"

You briefly think through your alternatives. You could dive down to the deck, which would negate the MiG-31s' range advantage, either prevent them from firing or force them to come in closer, but if the Su-35s decided to tangle with you, things could get messy. You could try to break through the Su-35 formation and hit the MiG-31s up close. Or, you could just engage the Su-35s and hope the MiG-31's wouldn't risk hitting their planes.

You fire a trio of missiles at the oncoming cluster of Su-35s, and they all zoom in effortlessly. striking three of the craft and knocking two of them out almost immediately in large fireballs. The third takes heavy damage when your QAAM detonates right above it, and it dives away, smoke and debris trailing from its engines. Unfortunately, Lilian's missiles fail to gain a lock and zoom past harmlessly. The Su-35s respond with their own hail of missiles, However, they're all shot in haste. Many fail to track and most of the rest are easy to juke, but you notice one missile that seems to have gotten your scent.

You try to throw the missile off with a last second juke, but it can't quite manage it, and the a missile makes an unexpectedly sharp turn, exploding and tearing up your right wing with shrapnel.

>-3hp
>9hp remains

"Are you okay?" Lilian asks.

"Yeah, they just scratched the paint." You grunt.

Suddenly, the four MiG-31 screech past as they continue to chase down Babylon, completely ignoring the furball that you had initiated. That wasn't good. With their speed and range, any kind of escape run by Babylon would be put in danger.

To add to your issues, you see four of the remaining Su-35s break off to follow them, no doubt as a close in escort.

You had no choice but to trust that Lara could handle things. Anyways, Lara was practically the best pilot in the squadron, maybe even better than you. If anybody could take that number of enemies on her own, it would be her.

"Stripes, you got incoming! Eight bandits!" You warn.

"I see them!" Lara laughs enthusiastically. "I thought this was gonna be boring for a second!"

You can't devote any more time to paying attention to Lara's battle, considering you were still in the middle of your own. You still had six Su-35s to deal with, albiet one was heavily damaged.

You fire the next three missiles at the cluster of Su-35s circling you. Your two regular missiles streak out and converge on a single Su-35, completely evaporating the rear half of the craft and sending the remains spiraling out of control. Your QAAM seeks out the damaged target, the flames and smoke gushing from its damaged engines attracting the attention of your missile's IR sensor. The QAAM slams into the already weakened plane, shattering the entire airframe like glass.

Lilian likewise manages to take down a Su-35 on her own, the burning husk of the plane slamming into the side of a mountain.

That left three planes left in your immediate vicinity. You take advantage of the brief lull to update yourself on what was going on with the others.

"Stripes, status?" You ask.

"Well, uh, those MiG-31s are history, but these Su-35s are getting a bit troublesome!"

"Magnet? What about you?"

"Babysitting this lower through the canyons. Turns out his fancy Morgan doesn't do so well low to the deck." Amy says with bemusement.

"Because my plane isn't a rock with wings and an oversized gun." Babylon grunts.

"Girls, please, behave." You sigh.

"I think we should withdraw." Lilian suggests as she dodges a burst of gunfire from a passing Su-35. "I'm sure reinforcements will be coming."

That much was obvious. And even still, Phalanxes suck for the role. It's all about dem lasers, man. We're close enough where we'll have them deployed on aircraft in a decade, maybe decade and a half. Hell, we've already had a "low" powered one deployed on the USS Ponce.

"Lilian! Let's go!" You say, pulling away from the Su-35s. You point your nose back in the general direction of the Gullinbursti and hit you afterburners, pushing your throttle as far as it can go. Lilian does the same, her Typhoon picking up a vicious amount of speed.

Fortunately for the both of you, you break away at the exact right moment just as the Su-35s turn away in anticipation of an attack. This leaves them out of position to effectively line up a shot against you. You and LIlian then proceed to Lara's furball. Between you and Lilian's passing shots as well as Lara's dogfighting skills, you catch the four escorting Su-35s in a pincer and utterly annihilate them in a single pass.

"Aw man, I had them!" Lara claims.

"Sure you did." You laugh.

"Wild Cards, the bird is in the next." Loki says. "Prepare to land we'll leave the AO."

<<MISSION ACCOMPLISHED>>

The Su-35s attempt to chase, but they quickly break off when they realize they're flying straight into a city sized radar contact.

Landing was a bit harrowing, considering that the landing strip was much narrower and shorter than you were used to,not to mention that it was moving, as well. Fortunately, you're coached into by the air controller and you miraculously manage to land safely.

And then you were treated to a show when, of all things, you disembark to see Amy arguing with who you assume to be Babylon.

"You take that back!" Amy growls. "It's NOT a rustbucket!"

"It certainly is." Babylon retorts smoothly. "That thing is barely being held together by spit and duct tape. I'm surprised it even flies!"

"Yeah, well, at least my Hog's got SOUL." Amy gestures to her heart. "And those are brave words, coming from a guy hiding behind his helmet!"

"All right, you wanna make a fight of this?" Babylon pulls his helmet off, revealing a head of short, blond hair and a dangerous mix of feminine and masculine features.

You see Amy pause for a brief second before she rolls with the hit.

"Hmph. You're not worth the effort." She cross her arms and turns away in a huff. "You still gotta tell us what you know!"

"Oh, please." Babylon rolls his eyes.

"Awww, they make such a cute couple!" Lilian giggles.

"That they do." You laugh. "Assuming they don't kill each other first."

"What are you guys talking about?" Lara blinks.
