Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. The world slowly smoldered as the Air Nomads were eradicated by the Fire Nation, leaving nothing but empty homes in their wake. The Fire Nation has already started a full-scale campaign on the Southern Water Tribe, beginning the cycle of death anew.

Fifty years this war has raged, scorching the forests and destroying lives. Many have died and all hope of the Avatar's return has been extinguished, but life goes on. The walls of Ba Sing Se, Omashu, and the Northern Water Tribe have held the Fire Nation at bay, seemingly nothing can penetrate them. As always, there is also solace in wandering.

But this isn't a story about the Avatar, or a king, or even a hero, this is the story of Kuo, a wandering Firebender.

"Sandal-shuffler, stone-heart, low flyer, dead-soul..."

You see nothing but an opaque sheen of gray and all but the sound of the muttered words is mute to you. Burial Night is what you are feeling now, dread in your soul.

"Disappointment, runaway, "special", worthless, crawling back, traitor..."

The voice is familiar, yet fading from your mind, like a word you know but can't quite grasp to use.

"Survivor, peasant, dirt-turner, commoner, farmer, non-bender scum, not good enough, treason, thief, arranged..."

The voice is slowly fading away, and you feel yourself being pulled away from conciousness.

"Heavy-foot, coward, alone, nobody..."

You awake with a start, sweating profusely. You barely realized you dozed off after going to your room. You feel like you're forgetting something, but you can't quite place it. To get ready for your next match, you put on the garb you wear as the Flame Spirit and start drinking a lot of water from a bottle by your bed. Using that much steam takes a lot out of you, but you feel it's worth it.

You probably have an hour until your match.

You might as well get two birds with one stone, so you start doing stretches while meditating. You get into a good rhythm and start limbering up, stretching your entire body while reflecting on your nature and who you are. It's all very relaxing, but you feel like you're finally reaching a level of understanding about yourself. You are incredibly talented, but you never questioned how you are so adept at Firebending without any formal training. You begin to focus inward...

A burst of fire in the darkness explodes in your mind, a long, almost familiar looking silhouette of flame fills your vision.

"YOU WILL BURN!"

You scramble to your feet with a yelp as the voice reverberates through your skull. Something is wrong, you feel extremely energetic and you're breathing heavily, you begin doing frantic pushups to ty and calm down, but to no avail. Your mind is racing at a mile a minute, and your body tries it's hardest. You feel incredibly invigorated, then you realize something.

You're breathing smoke.

NONONONONONONONONONONONONONO! You can't have this happen now, there isn't even a hint of steam, it's all black, like a smouldering brushfire.

You need to calm down, this isn't what you need to do, panicking is bad right now. You continue what you were doing, sitting in a neutral position now instead of stretching, and focus on your inner self. You almost feel as if the room heats up, the vision returns of a long, winding, flame slowly advancing towards you. You feel the world around you burst with pain as a large, piercing voice booms at you.

"WHY DO YOU SPEAK TO ME MORTAL?" The words almost shatter your ears as you listen, they feel as if they are not so much said, but felt.

"What are you?"

"I AM VORLASH, AND YOU ARE MY PRISON!"

"Like that one crappy book the kids at my orphanage read?"

"NO... I... FEAR ME MORTAL!"

This seems kind of fishy, but your breath seems to feel less dry on your tongue and the room seems more humid, even if those are on the periphery of your awareness. This may be the only time to get some answers about this. You hear a scratching noise for a second and then it stops suddenly.

"WHY DO YOU SPEAK MORTAL?"

"What are you?" This is a question that needs to be answered first, you want to know what's going on. This asshole needs to stop messing with your steam, you need it right now.

"I AM VORLASH, THE SPIRIT IN THE WILD, THE BONFIRE OF THE OLD GROWTH, I WILL-"

"Yeah, why are you here?"

"I WAS UNJUSTLY IMPRISONED BY TERBA, THE BACKSTABBING TRAITOR, AND ALL FOR A TRADE."

"Can you stop with the smoke? I need the steam."

"I WILL NOT, MY GIFT SHALL NOT BE ABSENT FROM THE WORLD." This is the last straw, you don't care who this guy says he is, he doesn't call the shots.

You walk up to the fire and reach your hand in, it is extremely hot, but you made your choice. The fire gives way and you keep reaching in, much farther than you expected. Eventually, your hand touches something, something fuzzy.

"DO NOT TOUCH ME MORTAL!" The flames enveloping the spirit clear as you continue touching the fuzzy surface you worked out to be fur. You start scratching it and the flames clear, revealing a small Fire Ferret.

"STOP THIS MORTAL, I AM THE DEATH IN THE FOREST, I BURN ALL!" The ferret rolls over involuntarily and its leg begins twitching.

"STOP, I WILL RETURN MY INFLUENCE, JUST STOP IT!"

You fall out of your dream and your breath filters out in its normal shade. Right as you stand up, Utaaq enters the room.

"You're up."

You start to work yourself up for your entrance and the stretches have really loosened you up, you move with renewed vigor towards the entrance and wait.

"LLLLLLAAAADIES AND GENTLEMEN, COMING TO THE RING RIGHT NOW, WEIGHING IN AT 250 POUNDS OF PURE MUSCLE, HAMMERSTRIKE!" A man dressed as an Earth Kingdom General walks into the hall, drawing a boo from the crowd as he hefts a hammer with a hearty grunt.

"Give me your worst Fire Nation, I'll knock him down like the rest!" He shouts at the crowd and they boo more. He doesn't seem like a crowd favorite.

You snuff the lights and the hall fills with darkness, then you start filling the hall with steam, and a large bell rings in the distance to signal that it is sundown, the timing couldn't be more perfect. You light up your mask as the bell rings out in a chorus of solemn tones, the mask is illuminated in ghostly green light. The crowd watches in awe as you light the candles in blue flame, one by one. Your tonfas light up with an eerie red glow. The final peal of the bell rings out.

"The flame hungers, Hammerstrike."

The sun sets in perfect harmony with your words.

Hammerstrike hefts his hammer, "Then you damned well feed it you ash-face."

You go for a more swift approach to the battle and start unloading a barrage of flame at Hammerstrike, but he keeps hitting them with his hammer in a rotating dance of swings. You start to get annoyed and try to go faster. The blasts start speeding up and you notice that your arms are leaving a trail of fire. They slowly start moving so fast they become a blur with a tail of flame. The blasts eventually start hitting him, a few in the hand, knocking his hammer out of it, then a few at his stomach, colliding with his armor and sending him sliding back, still standing up. Finally, you push him onto his back out of the hall. Strangely, you feel like you're on fire, but no flames surround you.

>Technique Possibility: Burning Blur
>Technique Possibility: Heatwave

The crowd is silent, then they roar in extreme happiness, the same cry you remember hearing at the last match, but double the volume. You slowly snuff the flames and your mask dims. The crowd waits in solemn silence for the lights to come back on, then they cheer and clap some more. You walk into the waiting room and Kim is waiting.

"By Sozin's Comet, that was amazing kid. You really have a talent for this sort of thing. I might have to pay extra, your fights are raking in the gold. You're going places, get some rest. We have a day to roam tomorrow, then we set sail for Ember Island, wait until you see the arena there." He nudges you and pats you on the back, handing you a bag with 20 gold in it.

You make your way to your room and start chugging water, as you feel really overheated.

You decide to get a bath and read, you are really hot. So you get an idea. You go to Utaaq's room.

"Hey Utaaq, I've been overheating lately, could you do something about that, like a cold bath or something."

The old woman puts down the book she was reading rather quickly, covering the title before you enter.

"Yeah sure just go now." She stammers out quickly and hands you a bucket that had water in it, then it becomes ice.

"Thank you." You quickly leave, you don't want to think about the implications of what you just saw. So you go to the bath, more of a bin really, and put the ice in. You get out of your costume and get into the water while wincing. You brought your Pai-Sho book with you so you could read while cooling off. The water relaxes you while you read through the book.

After a few hours and finishing your bath, you close the back cover on "Pai-Sho for Dummies" and put it away. After you got into it, Pai-Sho is a game that takes an hour to learn, but a lifetime to master. After a few hours of studying strategies, you think you have a grasp on it. At least now you understand the theory. The bell rings for midnight, so you decide you should get to sleep. You enter your room to Jui snoring in his bunk, then you head to your bed.

Today was a good day.
