You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you and one of your researchers, Kevin, made a quick trip down to R&D to pick up several upgrades for Pandora, finding a large cart full of entertainment and supplies. You decided to wake Pandora up before setting up all her new toys, only to find she had experienced a nightmare from her first night with her Dreamware upgrade. You calmed her down a bit, but have an important decision to make.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest.

Repost from previous thread, since my computer died before we could reach a consensus.
You hurry over to Pandora's side and kneel down, carefully taking one of her hands in yours and softly telling her it's alright and that she's safe. You tell her she's okay, almost instructing her to breathe before realizing the folly in that. You run her fingers along your face, hoping it will snap her out of it some. Thankfully it does, and a few whimpers and shakes later she is once again looking at you. She is visibly shaken and her eyes keep darting around the room as if looking for something. Her grip isn't very strong, but she's squeezing your hand with all her might.
"The bad man..." She begins. "What happened to the bad man?" "What bad man?" You ask her, placing your other hand on her shoulder. "Did you have a bad dream?" "Bad man, he..." She doesn't seem to be able to find the words to describe it. "Scary fingers and mean teeth and... I saw him! He was trying to break me! I ran but he followed and I couldn't get away! Where did he go?!" It sounds like she's trying to describe a figure in her nightmare.

I'd love to see your interpretations of other characters! Though honestly, anything you do make would be fantastic! I welcome any and all fan-works of Pandora Quest.

Things look split between having her draw the "Bad Man" and asking her to describe more of what happened/explain what dreams are.

Well she can pretty much explain the dream as she's drawing ... and drawing seems more accessible to her than communicating verbally. Otherwise I lean towards her drawing it and us explaining.

i hope its not what i think it is.

"Tell me exactly what you saw." you say softly, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "In fact, do you think you could draw the "bad man" for me? Tell me what he tried to do. What you were scared of." Her eyes stare intently at your hand for a moment, a panicked look still on her face, but she nods her head slowly, standing up with you. You sit her down at the table and retrieve something for her to draw with; some paper and a few crayons. She takes a moment to compose herself, then begins.
"I was in a room. It was all white like here and I saw a dog, like you said to!" She gives a weak, half-hearted smile for a second. "It was a little brown one. I tried to pet it...and then the Bad Man showed up. He stopped me from touching the dog and looked angry! He said he wanted me to...to stop I think? He told me...um...to get away? I didn't know what he meant. He was so mad. He called me names...weak and...and foolish, I think. I don't know..." Her hands shake as she draws, too shaken to make anything beyond a crude, stick figure of what she saw. It looks like a standard "boogeyman" any child would claim to see for the most part, though the words are a little troubling.
"Pandora," you place your hand on her shoulder once again. "what you experienced was a dream. It was fantasy. Not real. Like a story in your mind made of random bits of things you've experienced, understand? What it is is completely harmless. The "Bad Man" is just a figment of your imagination and can never really hurt you. Do you understand?"

She calms down some, staring intently at the picture. "Not real..." She mulls over the words, turning them over in her mind. "So...he can't...actually hurt me?" You nod. "He's just something your dream made up. Dreams are pretty random at times and that can make some pretty scary stuff. Human beings have bad dreams too, they're called nightmares. You might have them from time to time, but that's just part of having dreams. You'll have good ones too! Without the Bad Man coming to hurt you!" She smiles, almost completely getting the concept down. Practice makes perfect, it seems. "I'm glad..."
Now that that's been settled, you have other matters to attend to, and Kevin's impatient foot-tapping is beginning to grate on your nerves a little.

You turn around to face your restless subordinate, a stern look on your face. "If you don't stop that incessant tapping, I'm going to have you demonstrate to Pandora your favorite dance moves right here for all the security cameras to see." His foot immediately stops and Kevin averts your gaze, unsure if you're serious or not. You decide now would be a good time to install Pandora's new upgrades, picking up the box and USB stick containing them and making your way to the maintenance room. After having Pandora hop up and lie down, you gather the necessary tools and get to work, Kevin grumpily taking a seat at the table to go over his notes while you work.

The installation goes off without a hitch, thankfully. You hook Pandora up to a backup power source for the duration, powering her down and replacing the old battery with the new, noting a small "Keep on dancin'" written on the side of the new battery. It makes you feel a little warm and fuzzy and you mentally remind yourself to thank R&D later. During the swap, you install the "Wake Up" program as well, hoping this will give her some more sense of individuality, as well as help her avoid any more bad dreams if they should come up.

Once everything is over and done and Pandora is good to go, you boot her back up and have her hop off the bench, asking her how she feels. She gives an energetic smile and does a small hop. "Like I could dance for hours, doctor!" A quick twirl and she heads back into the central room, dancing about happily. That is, until Kevin clears his throat.
"Doctor, if you're finished with the android's enhancements, I would like to begin the lesson." God, what a dick. It's going to be a little tough to get Pandora to pay attention to this exceedingly dull lesson, especially with her prancing about the room with her new-found battery life, but you'e got to try. You call her over and get started.

Despite your best efforts, and no thanks to Kevin's poor "people skills", Pandora hardly pays attention during the lesson, instead finding the cart full of art supplies and other fun things a great deal more interesting. She interrupts numerous times to ask what something on the cart is and what it's for, requests to watch videos of dogs, attempts to touch Kevin, much to his chagrin, and numerous other unproductive things. Kevin is displeased.
"Doctor, I don't think TBX-42 is very...adept at this. Perhaps I should spend more time tutoring...?" He trails off as Pandora decides to test the difference between his lab coat and yours.

You pull Kevin aside as Pandora looks through the cart like a kid on Christmas, looking him dead in the eye. "Kevin, I brought you onto my team because you are more than qualified to work on a highly challenging and daunting task such as this. However, when the idea was brought to me about having you assist in teaching Pandora I had hoped you were at least somewhat versed in teaching intelligent beings. Apparently I was mistaken.
You treat her as if she is just a machine, a computer you enter commands into for instant results. She is so much more. She is sentient. She has thoughts, real thoughts, and emotions. She is unlike anything mankind has ever created before and I had hoped you had the vision to see that. I understand today was a bit of a fluke, so we'll have a mulligan and try again another day. By then I expect you to have a real grip on how you should go about this."

Kevin is rather stunned by your words, but you're pretty sure they got through to him. He nods lightly, stammering out a "yes, doctor" nervously.

You could always go with "Learning is FUNdamental".

You pat Kevin on the shoulder and turn your attention back to Pandora, who has just finished folding her fifth origami fox, and ask if she'd like to see all of her new things set up. An energetic nod is all you need as you heft some of the sizable boxes and begin the long, arduous process of getting everything ready. The TV and DigiRom player get hooked up and programmed, the game system plugged in, you guess, (You never were much for video games.) a bookshelf filled with books and art supplies restocked and ready for use. You read several manuals and check a few connections to make sure no internet connection is capable and, satisfied with your work, get ready to introduce Pandora to the wonderful world of having fun. What should you explore first?

You think video games might be good for hand-eye coordination or something. You're pretty sure you read that somewhere, anyway. Included are a few games, some being educational, but you have a feeling learning isn't going to happen today. So, you pop in a racing game, hoping that will be decently exciting for Pandora. However, you get a rather devious idea before you take the second controller. "Kevin," you call over to the still a little sheepish researcher. "I want you to play this with Pandora." You hold out the controller, much to his baffled astonishment. "Err..." he stammers. "Sir, I'm, ah... Not usually one to partake in these kinds of things... Video games aren't really my..." A stern look is enough to force his hand and he begrudgingly takes the controller from you, sighing. You sit back and watch, hoping this can be a good bonding experience for the two, at least.

After some awkward experimentation and tutorials for both of them, they begin to get the gist of things. At least a lot less violently smashing into walls, anyway. Still, Pandora seems to be enjoying herself and manages to overcome Kevin in skill pretty much from the get-go, which you find rather titillating considering she literally had no idea what a car was until just a few minutes prior.
Kevin is rather dejected-looking and grows tired of the game after his 10th loss to Pandora. "Doctor, I have other, more productive things I could be doing right now." He moans. "Maybe you could take over so I can get back to my work?"

You can't help but feel sorry for the poor sod, clearly out of his element. You pat him on the back and take the controller from his hand. "Go on back to your work, Kevin. Might I suggest you think up some ways to make your lessons a little more..." You think of a polite way of saying 'less boring' for a moment. "Exciting for Pandora in the future? She is rather impressionable right now, so she needs something that will interest her." Kevin lets out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, doctor. I'll take your words to heart." He barely finishes that sentence before he's halfway out of the room.

Now, that just leaves the matter of Pandora, who is eagerly awaiting a new challenger. You've been watching, so you at least get the gist of it, but you still have very little experience with video games. "Ready, doctor?" Pandora says with an almost cocky tone in her voice.
Here goes nothing.

You may not be the best at games, but you're a fast learner. Not to mention you have the leg up on Pandora since she's never even been in a car before, much less actually driven one. The first few races are a washout, Pandora feeling rather proud of her skills at this game, however that changes once you get a feel for it. You take turns tighter, break at all the right moments and eventually overtake her, winning game after game, her face aghast at her loss. Eat your heart out, Kevin.

In an effort to appease the now somewhat adorably pouty Pandora, you give the game a rest, deciding to switch to television for a while, as she already knows how to use the art supplies on her own. Lights out is in a couple hours anyway, so it could be a good time to wind down.

You look through all the movies requisitions included and notice a few gems, shitty ones and even some old classics. You notice some of the old Star Wars movies and think that could be a funny look into what people of the past thought "sci-fi" was. Though it's hard to remember what order you're supposed to watch them in before Episode X.

Before the movie, you explain to Pandora that this is a work of fiction; everything in this movie is made up, a story used for entertainment purposes a long time ago. The people back then thought this is what things would be like in the "future", even though it's obviously wildly inaccurate. Still, it should be fun.

A little TOO fun, to be honest. After the first one, she starts really getting into it, swinging around a paint brush like a lightsaber, making wooshing noises during just about every action scene. Still, she's enjoying herself, and that's what's important, even if she almost jabbed your eye out a few times with her brush.
It's all rather cute until she asks a question you had hoped she would never ask you.

"Doctor," she "sheathes" her "lightsaber", actually making the sound as she does. "Could I have a gun like they have in the movies? Or a lightsaber?!" She looks extremely excited to ask a question that could potentially get her memory wiped and the entire project scrapped. Well shit, now what?

"Well..." you start, suddenly recalling just how many cameras are in this room. "You see, in movies and things like that, they make things like guns and fighting and stuff like that look fun and exciting. However, in real life, it's scary and bad. People can get really hurt from it. Like, the kind of hurt you can't fix." It dawns on you that Pandora has no real concept of mortality. This is going to complicate things.
"See, people... Humans can be hurt so badly they can never, uh, live again. Like, you would never, ever see them again. It's very, very sad. And weapons can do that. They hurt people. So, because of that, it's against the rules for you to have anything that's dangerous, like weapons. Do you... Do you understand what I mean?" God, you hope she does. The last thing you need is security and the General asking questions.

Oh shit.

"But..." Pandora looks down at her deadly brushsaber, turning it around in her hands carefully. "I"ll be really careful! I wouldn't use them on anybody! I wouldn't hurt anyone, I promise! And if I did, I would help them feel better! But I wouldn't hurt them!" She looks somewhat distraught. "And I would take really good care of it, too! I'd make sure it didn't ever break! Can I have one now?" Jeez, she doesn't get it at all. This could be bad...
You're about to try to explain once again, but get two quick pings from your PDA.

Gen. Richards: Put TBX-42 in the charging cradle and come see me.
Gen. Richards: Immediately.

Fuck.

This looks like a good place to stop for tonight. However, thanks so much for playing everyone! I hope you had as much fun playing as I did running! I hope to see you all again in the next thread tomorrow night. Please follow me on Twitter and vote up the threads on the archive if you enjoyed it!

How many anti-virus does Pandora have?
>>
>>42864566
When can we give her a box and then make bad jokes about it?
>>
>>42864566
Is Pandora even learning about weapon a no-no?
>>
>>42864583
Well she's not allowed access to the internet, none, but she's also got the most complex operating system ever created, so there's not exactly any virus software written for her yet.
>>42864589
Whenever you acquire a suitable box, I suppose.

The rules are thus:

1. Direct contact with TBX-042 is only permitted by, or under direct supervision of the head researcher.
2. Under no circumstances should TBX-042 be allowed to handle any weapon or potentially dangerous material at any time, including, but not limited to: firearms, blades longer than 13cm (5in) or sharp enough to pierce protective gear, flammable materials, explosives, corrosives, etc. Failure to adhere to this rule may force security personnel to use deadly force.
3. No software or hardware is to be added to TBX-042 without approval from head researcher. Hardware must be approved by at least one Class 1 or higher off-site staff as well.
4. TBX-042 is allowed restricted and supervised internet access for learning purposes, but at NO TIME should it be allowed to directly connect to ANY source of internet access for ANY reason, including but not limited to: personal computer, smart phone, tablet, electronic game console, etc. In case of rule 4 being broken, an immediate full memory wipe of TBX-042 is to be performed by the head researcher.
5. No copies, backups, secondaries or other replications of TBX-042's code are allowed to be created or stored at the facility. Photographs, video and audio recordings are allowed for monitoring and research purposes by security staff or with head researcher's approval only.
6. TBX-042 is NOT allowed outside of the facility for ANY reason without direct approval from Class 1 off-site staff for the purpose of transporting to other approved secure facilities. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in the immediate destruction of TBX-042 and termination/incarceration of involved parties.

We didn't really break any rules in that case. And it is kind of inevertible for Pandora to gain knowledge of weapon if she is going to watch any amount of television.

>How many bad sequels did Disney make?
They did a reboot, you still get people who say the first 4-6 were the best but the 2045 tri-trilogy was overall a good run with very few plot-holes given that it was 9 movies over 26 years.
