You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division of the Gotei 13. The year is 1945.

The war in the living world has been on your doorstep since last year. Nobody knows how many people have been killed by the bombing raids, since many of the government buildings that house such records have been destroyed. What you do know is that somewhere in the neighborhood of sixty cities have been attacked, with somewhere around a third of the urban area of Japan having been subsequently damaged or destroyed.

The Captains have been called to address the newest escalation: the amphibious assault on the island stronghold of Okinawa.

“How bad is it?” Isshin asks the Head Captain, whose expression has remained stubbornly neutral through the briefing so far.

“Expected casualties vary widely,” he grumbles, shooting a stern glare at Mayuri for his failure to adequately predict the course of the battle. “But it is expected to be a catastrophe for the civilians living on the island.”

This has gotten strangely personal. You recall from Rosa's memories that you were originally born on Okinawa, to a pair of Quincy. This suggests to you at least that there are possibly Quincy still on that island, in addition to the usual complications surrounding massive battles such as what is taking place. Regardless of the outcome of this meeting, that may be worth looking into... if for no other reason than to satisfy Rosa's need to know.

“I am treating this situation as an emergency,” Yamamoto declares. “I would like volunteers to handle the unfolding crisis from the living world.”

“I volunteer,” you raise a single hand. “My Division are trained for this sort of event.”

Yoruichi also raises her hand. “The Onmitsu will serve as scouts. I can have elements of First and Second Units deployed by tomorrow.”

The Head Captain nods in agreement. “Your contributions are appreciated.”

Unexpectedly, Mayuri raises his hand as well. “I would like to send my new Lieutenant and a small team as observers,” he states. “It should serve to expand our understanding of hollow feeding habits during such unrest.”

With this man, you're never quite sure what to believe. He could be using this to test some pet project of his, or to examine his new Lieutenant. It's also possible that he suspects there are Quincy on Okinawa... you wouldn't put it past him at all. It could be problematic if his request is honored by Head Captain Yamamoto.

Or it could be completely innocuous, and trying to bar him could lose you good will. Yoruchi gives you a questioning look, waiting to see what you decide to do.

You choose not to speak, instead shaking your head at Yoruichi who also remains silent.

“Very well,” Yamamoto nods. “Your team will remain within the areas cleared for Fourth Division.”

It takes only a few hours for the Onmitsu to clear an area within the capital city of Naha, where the relief teams and the science team will be located. You, Yoruichi, Rangiku, and your remaining Commandos will travel to the living world first to ensure the area is truly secure while the bulk of the shinigami come through behind you.

Stepping through the Senkaimon, you're not immediately sure you've gotten the right place. Rolling artillery and staccato bursts of automatic weapons fire fill the sticky, smoke-laden air, as omnipresent and oppressive as the blazing tropical sunshine and wicked heat. It takes you a moment, but eventually you manage to orient yourself.

While the city before you is all ashes now as far as your eyes can see, your other senses alert you to the full scale of the catastrophe that is unfolding at this very moment. Such astounding brutality goes far beyond what you ever thought human beings could do to each other, as if the whole world has lost its tenuous grip on reason and given into its darkest, most base desires. The surging mass of humanity contained on this island faces annihilation not just from their own hatred for each other, but from the legions of hollows they've unwittingly attracted with their idiocy.

Next to you, Yoruichi stands in a similar state of shock.

“I read the initial reports,” she mutters, “but I didn't think it'd be this bad.”

Rangiku says nothing, and Kai and Mirai exchange worried glances as the members of Ninth and Fourth Divisions finally join you.

“I will be setting up now,” a monotone voice interrupts your thoughts. You turn to face a quite young woman with a long braid, bearing the insignia of the Research Bureau.

“Kurotsuchi Nemu,” she greets you formally with a gentle bow. “A pleasure to work with you, Lady Shiba. Lady Shihōin.”

Wait... something about that statement just doesn't check out with you.

“You mean Kurotsuchi had a kid?” you ask, eyes widening in shock. "When the hell did that happen?"

Rangiku seems similarly surprised. “More importantly, with who? I didn't think any woman would have him.”

The Lieutenant shakes her head. “You are technically correct.”

Without explaining herself, “Kurotsuchi Nemu” leaves to direct her team as they set up various scientific-looking pieces of heavy equipment. Rangiku shakes her head in disbelief.

“I'm not even gonna ask,” you mutter. “Yoruichi, try and sense where the most hollows are coming through. I've got something to do.”

You quietly shut your eyes, stretching your senses out around the island. The rush of information almost overwhelms you as the location of every significant spiritual pressure on Okinawa is revealed to you, and you can even get a sense for what each is doing at that exact moment.

There are exactly seventeen Quincy on the island right now, spread out mostly through the highlands that run from Itoman in the south all the way up to the northern end. The strongest in in the town of Shuri, near the ruins of the castle that once served as the center of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus. Focusing on it, you can actually see the man standing there, overlooking the town as well as the ruins of Naha far below. His presence almost carries a sense of fatherliness even as he picks off hollows one by one, but he also seems to be growing exhausted.

You wonder how long he's been at this.

"Strange," you hear Rosa's voice in your mind as she seemingly senses the same things you do. "He's quite good, but his technique feels strangely antiquated. Like a throwback to an era before even my own."

You reopen your eyes to find Yoruichi staring at you calmly.

“You felt it too,” she states. It's not so much a question in your mind. Instead, it sounds like she's merely confirming something she already knows.

You nod. “I did. Seventeen.”

“What do you want to do?” she asks. “We're going to run into them eventually.”

“No need to push it right now,” you reply, drawing a map from within your Captain's haori. “We both felt the hollows, let's start by putting that to a map.”

Over the next several minutes you and Yoruichi plot hollow contacts on the map of Okinawa you brought along, while your respective officers watch. The result seems to conform to the Onmitsu's current battle map, with the greatest number of hollows spawning along both sides of a line that runs across the short width of the island through Shuri. Most of the northern half of the island has already fallen into American hands, though not without cost, and a few sporadic hollows sightings are trickling in from there.

“So, this is the plan,” you announce to your Division members. “I'm assigning sectors of the Shuri front to each ten-man squad. Squad leaders deploy your fireteams to cover each sector, and keep in touch. The Commandos and Captains will be on standby as force multipliers. Clear?”

There are no questions, as your orders are fairly simple for now.

“Thanks,” you tell her. “Final point: if you run into any humans who are using bows, or who have reiatsu, do not engage. If you can, it would be preferable to assist them.”

The two hundred or so Ninth Division members present head for the hills north of Naha, prepared to begin their duties. Rangiku, Kai, and Mirai however join you and Yoruichi.

“There are Quincy here?” Kai asks for confirmation. You nod quietly.

“Seventeen.”

Rangiku frowns at you. “What a pain... how do you want to handle this, Captain?”

“I would not wish to be the first one to make contact,” Mirai observes.

You rapidly approach the Quincy whose presence you felt earlier, making no effort to hide your reiatsu as you do so. When you finally step onto the castle ramparts where he's standing, you hear a gentle sound like a trickle of water as a single silver tube about the length of your thumb lands near your feet.

“Gritz!” the man declares firmly, and a dome of what looks like silver steel erupts from the tube to entrap you. You're taken so off your guard that you don't even really think to dodge, despite being left just enough time to do so.

“You were foolish to come here alone, Captain,” the man insists from outside the dome. “But do not concern yourself too much. I have no intention of killing you. This technique will end not long after I make my escape.”

Tenkotsuki can dispell barriers right? This ain't shit.
>>
>>42869952
You really don't have time for tricks on this pathetic level right now.

“You know the weak spot?” Rosa asks.

Tenkotsuki chimes in. “Of course she does. It should be painfully obvious.”

“Quiet,” you growl, focusing reiatsu into your left fist and punching clean through the front of the steel dome. The blow lands right at the center of the stylized Quincy cross that you noticed forming there, and the whole barrier opens like a flower. The Quincy who thought he had you trapped turns to watch in horror as you stride confidently out onto the ramparts once again.

He has what you'd normally describe as a kindly face, neither particularly young nor old, but with pale hair and a bushy mustache that seems to age him beyond his years. He wears rectangular glasses, behind which his eyes regard you with a slight frown.

“I apologize for underestimating you,” he bows stiffly, before nocking a reishi arrow on his bow. It's a simple weapon, but with broad limbs and seemingly reinforced for use as an improvised melee weapon. “I should have known a Captain could defeat such a half-hearted barrier with ease.”

“Try again in a hundred years,” you return. “Though if it's any consolation I'm one of the stronger Captains right now, despite my young appearance.”

“You don't intend to draw your swords?” he asks. A mortar blast somewhere below the castle reminds you briefly of the ongoing battle that's raging around this eye of relative calm, though neither you nor the Quincy so much as flinch.

You shake your head. “Why would I? I have no interest in killing anything but hollows.”

“May I have your name?” he inquires, his bow still trained on you.

“Captain Kusajishi Riku, Ninth Division. And you are?”

“Ishida Sōken, one of the current generation of Sternritter.”

“The current generation?” you ask. “You've kept up that tradition?”

Ishida nods sternly. “We have. The Quincy fighting here are mostly descended from those who survived the war. We name the strongest Quincy of each generation as the Sternritter, in recognition of the Sternritter who gave her life to save those of our grandparents.”

You can feel that explanation strike a sudden emotional chord with Rosa as she realizes the same thing you do: you're speaking to the grandchild of one of Rosa Rosette's surviving subordinates, living testament to her sacrifice. Ishida gives you a strange look, but says nothing.

For your part, the reminder that you could be this man's great-grandmother just makes you feel old.

“We're here to handle hollow duties,” you explain. “I'd prefer to keep you and your fellow Quincy alive, if at all possible.”

Ishida cocks his head at you in confusion, his bow still trained on you. “Why?”

“My reasons are my own,” you reply. “But I'll say it again, I'm not here to kill Quincy. Doing so would serve no purpose, so I've ordered my subordinates not to attack any Quincy they see.”

“I want to trust you,” Ishida admits, “but I'm not sure I can.”

A thought crosses your mind. “For now you don't need to trust me. But you'll figure out my reasons sooner or later on your own. All you need to do is look a little harder at your own history, and you'll see it for sure.”

After a moment, Ishida lowers his bow and lets the projectile dissipate. “Very well. I'll inform my companions.”

“That's all I needed you to do,” you tell him before using hirenkyaku to fling yourself back down the mountain towards Naha. You're careful to give Ishida a good view of your technique as you do so.

Over the next few weeks you hardly see the Quincy again, though there are plenty of hollows. The conditions on the ground however deteriorate rapidly as the monsoon arrives, turning the charred and shell-riddled landscape of Okinawa into a giant open-air cesspit. Bodies lie everywhere half-decayed in the mud, which is thick enough in some places to swallow up tanks and other military vehicles as they try to pass. Your brief forays into the American lines for intelligence gathering suggest that the naval battle has also been pitched, with frequent suicide attacks by aircraft and even a failed suicide attack by the super-battleship Yamato, sunk by naval aircraft off Kyushu before it could reach the combat area.

By mid-June it's clear that the battle, and likely the war, have both been lost. The IJA is fighting a skillful tactical retreat towards the Itoman peninsula, sustaining heavy casualties. It's around this time that the full extent of civilian casualties becomes clear, as some Japanese units begin sending local Ryukyu conscripts on suicide attacks against the advancing Americans. Many others are compelled to throw themselves off the high cliffs along the southern coast, including women and children.

As the number of Japanese defenders on Okinawa dwindles, and they become increasingly desperate, your heart is filled with a sense of foreboding...

“Wake up!” you hear Rangiku shouting in the middle of the night, panic clear in her voice. “Something's gone wrong!”

Sure enough, you can feel that the atmosphere has changed... it's the same feeling you get from a hell portal being opened, but orders of magnitude more powerful than that. Suddenly it makes sense: with so many people on this island dying, and so many atrocities being committed against soldiers and civilians alike, there's bound to be dozens at a time that are bound for the fiery depths of hell. And now that the fighting is being confined to one end of the island...

You spring into action, and find your Commandos, Yoruichi, Suì Fēng, and even Ishida all gathered in one place.

“This is getting out of hand!” Yoruichi shouts over the sound of what must be nearly a hundred hell portals all open around the town of Itoman. The howling of souls being devoured are punctuated by the roar of countless hollows, all circling the sky like birds of prey. One of them even feels like it could be another Vasto Lorde: a great, bat-like creature of inky darkness. “I've never seen this happen before!”

“The sheer number of portals has destabilized the living world in their immediate surroundings!” Tenkotsuki exclaims, the rare tone of astonishment coloring her words. “I knew it was theoretically possible, but to actually see it...”

“All units, tactical withdrawal!” you order, your voice booming out into the night with the help of the Tenteikura cast by Tenkotsuki. Despite obvious distaste in the order, your squad leaders rush to comply. The riflemen and kidō specialists open fire as they move, greatly thinning the number of weaker hollows for you and your group to deal with.

Without need for explanation Yoruichi begins to perform the necessary steps to close a hell portal, shutting them one at a time as they open. Tenkotsuki walks you through the process of doing the same while Rangiku calls the Seireitei for Kaoru as backup. Kai, Mirai, and Ishida do what they can to keep hollows off of you, but that Vasto Lorde still worries you.

It takes some time, but Kaoru finally arrives just as things start to get ugly. Kai and Mirai have both taken wounds, and Ishida's fingers are bleeding from the nailbeds. All three can keep fighting, but not for much longer.

The Captain of the Kidō Corps draws her sword, and immediately slams it into the ground with a great shout of “Bankai! Sen Hasu no Seichi!"

From the sky you watch several dozen stone torii gates of immense size hurtle to the ground, raising a cring of dustclouds that must be a mile across.

“I'll need help,” she tells you quickly. “All the reiatsu you can muster! Hurry!”

“Tenkotsuki... raze, Kobara no Tachi,” you call, the rush of power filling your body as your swords combine into one and begin to fuse with your right arm. Most of your companions, who haven't seen this form yet, take an involuntary step back aside from Yoruichi. She simply spreads her arms, and catches a giant steel pillar as it materializes, hefting the massive weapon over her shoulder. The two of you activate your Sōkō Shunkō simultaneously, Yoruichi to manage the immense weight of the 41cm naval rifle she's summoned, and yourself to increase your reiatsu to the limit.

Kaoru recovers her focus. “Right, why am I surprised. Riku, I need you to stab that sword of yours into the hell portal I'm about to create... I can't keep it open long enough with my own reiatsu while maintaining my Bankai.”

“Got it,” you nod as Yoruichi brings her weapon to bear on the Vasto Lorde circling high above.

“NOW!” Kaoru roars as she summons a hell portal that's easily thirty meters across, while also closing the numerous smaller portals. You stab Tenkotsuki and Rosa into the side of the portal's frame, feeding it massive amounts of reiatsu to keep the massive gate open.

Yoruichi crows with delight as she draws a bead on the Vasto Lorde and fires, the shockwave from the blast very nearly knocking your Commandos off their feet. The shell bursts in a cone of flame and shrapnel, like the breath of a dragon illuminating the night sky as it scythes through dozens of hollows.

“It dodged!” Suì Fēng shouts. “Adjust three degrees left windage, one degree down!”

“Just fuck off already you damn bat!” Yoruichi shouts in frustration as she fires the oversized weapon a second time. This time, she seems to scorch the bat badly enough to force it to withdraw to Hueco Mundo.

Yoruichi sighs as she allows the rifle to disintegrate. “Finally. Seems he'd had enough. You two okay?”

Which secret? We're not Visored anymore.

And anyway, what else would you have her do?
Magic expert tells her to pour as much power as possible to prevent hell on earth. Shinigami duties and all that.
>>
>>42872201
"I can't maintain this thing forever," you admit. "It takes a huge amount of reiatsu to keep open..."

Without a word, Yoruichi stabs a Chinese-style longsword that has appeared in her right hand into the frame of the hell portal. To your right, Rangiku does the same.

"So we'll just have to help out," Rangiku explains. "Come on."

On the other side you see Kai and Mirai stabbing their zanpakuto into the hell portal as it pulls one doomed war criminal after the other down into hell as they're killed, or when they commit suicide in defeat.

It takes three days before the over-sized hell portal can be safely closed.

"You saved a lot of lives with that stunt," Ishida finally admits as you and your unit prepare to withdraw, your duty here essentially having been done as the Japanese Army finally admitted defeat.

"Perhaps some shinigami can be worked with after all."

"My Division will be in touch," you reassure him. "If you have concerns in the future, I'll listen."

I'm not even worried about that roll, it's probably just Aizen figuring something out, us not being able to sustain a hellgate solo or us missing something else going on at the moment. I'm to busy basking in Yoruichi using naval guns to blast Sadbat out of the air in the middle of the Pacific theater in WW2. Too bad Riku doesn't have a kick ass gun though.

Time continues to advance. The war ended in disaster, of course. Standing in the empty stateroom aboard the Nagato, you wonder how much of this Isoroku must have seen coming. The nuclear weapons, though... those surprised everyone.

That was a black day in the history of the Seireitei. You still remember the Research Bureau's communications operator, repeating his call to Nagasaki station over and over, only to hear static in return. When you finally saw it, that was the moment you first understood.

Even Aizen had nothing to say.

Many thousands of Rukongai civilians had to be killed to balance the cycle, even with the "ballast souls" in place. There just weren't enough menos to kill to even it out, and you couldn't kill them fast enough. Many years later, most of the shinigami who served during that time still refuse to talk about it.

In 1946 Byakuya married the frail-looking girl from the Rukongai you noticed him making puppy-dog eyes at so many years ago, much to the dismay of his clan. He wouldn't hear any argument against her though, and you were happy to attend their wedding. But as you had thought the day you first saw her, she wasn't long for the world: in 1951, you attended the funeral of Kuchiki Hisana. It had been barely five years since you had seen her married.

Byakuya was never quite the same.

In 1949, however, you celebrated fifty years in command of the Ninth Division, to much fanfare. Rangiku printed a centerfold splash dedicated to you in the Seireitei Communication magazine, featuring some very appealing photographs and stories from your subordinates about you. All very flattering, and in return you ordered your Division to take a week off to celebrate fifty years of heroism and service under your tenure.

That same year was also when you and Yoruichi finally married. It was a simple, quiet service at a temple in the Seireitei, where the monks agreed that regardless of the traditions of the great Clans two people who love and respect each other shouldn't be barred from marriage. Rangiku and Gin were there, and you even managed to sneak Apacci in without anyone noticing. The arrancar apparently just wanted to see what a wedding looked like. Unless anyone checked at the temple or you told them, the marriage will continue to be a private matter.

average Vasto Lorde individually is about 25k souls more or less depending on quality and power. 2 nukes wiped out 500k mortal lives instantly, not including aftermath deaths. To counteract that big of an influx by killing menos and soul ballast isn't enough without causing lasting damage from the major destabilization.

1952 proves to be an interesting year, starting with a knock at your office door.

"Hey, Riku?" Rangiku chirps, hanging her head in through the doorframe. "You busy?"

You shrug, leaning back to lay on the floor. "Nope. Light day of work today. Why, you have something in mind?"

"Sure do," she grins. "You know how we're down two members of the Commandos now that Ichinose's transfer to Kaoru's unit is official?"

"I'm aware of that," you groan. "Didn't think it'd be that hard to find a replacement for him and Tetsuzaemon... though they're here often enough you'd think they never left."

"Well," Rangiku continues, her voice still excited, "the Academy's got some new hotshots right now. Wanna go check them out?"

"They're mostly cute guys, I take it?" you shoot back from the floor.

Rangiku pouts loudly. "You're always making accusations like that, Captain. It's not nice!"

"Prove me wrong for once and I'll stop making them."

“I guess I can make my own amusement,” you sigh, leaping to your feet.

Rangiku chuckles. “Attagirl.”

When you arrive at the Academy, you spot the first year students as they're being sorted into classes. You look them over, and find the situation disappointing.

“I'm gonna go get the guy I heard about!” Rangiku declares, rushing off towards the building and leaving you to flag down the instructor in charge of sorting the “advanced” and “normal” classes.

“Can I help you, Lady Shiba?” he asks with a deep bow.

“It's fine, instructor,” you insist. “Just lemme get a good look at this bunch.”

“Of course, Captain. At your leisure.”

Only a few among the crowd catch your eye: you can tell most of them won't amount to much as shinigami. But in the group slated for the lower class, you spot a pair of missed gems. “You there, with the red hair and the goofy tattoos. What's your name?”

The young man springs to attention. “Abarai, ma'am.”

“Congratulations Abarai, you just made the first class.”

The instructor bows deeply once more. “Ma'am, with all due respect Abarai was to be assigned to the lower class with the others from the Rukongai...”

At that point in his sentence, you suddenly lose patience with the man. Your glare hits him like an invisible avalanche, freezing his body in place. “He'll be in the first class, and you are no longer permitted to speak in my presence unless it's to answer a question. Are we clear, instructor?”

The instructor struggles with his words even after your gaze softens. “Crystal, ma'am,” is his eventual response.

>>
>>42873238
“You there, the short one with the bangs,” you continue, startling a familiar-looking young woman. “What's your name?”

“Rukia, ma'am,” she quickly bows, though the confused look on her face tells you it's more because she has no idea how to handle the situation and is merely defaulting to a deep bow.

“You're in as well. Second class, follow this moron. The rest of you, come with me.”
>>
Riku really is the height of manners.
