Become The Dragon Quest 22

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you spotted Vein, you think, and Gil bled into the stone bowl so you could open the portal. You had Fiona and Sena move him somewhere safe just in case of danger, and headed into the portal with Pirin. When you reached the other side you found yourself cut off from Allegiset, and you lost your wings, claws and boons. After getting yourself together you ventured down into the tomb, asking Pirin about dragons and half breeds.

You learned that in the cycle there is always a herald of darkness, one with monstrous blood who seeks to awaken that power fully and winds up as a puppet and vessel for their ancient ancestor. The White Blade of Schimdi you're seeking for Allegiset may very well be the blade of starlight destined to end the life of the next herald when the mankind is on the brink of destruction, and your deal to become a dragon might end with him taking over your mind. You resolved to find a way to turn the tables on him, and proceeded downwards.
>>
>>42868673
Let's rock, fuckers.
>>
The tomb, as it turns out, was once the grand golden castle of Allegiset, and while trekking along the shimmering walkway towards the main gate you saw strange waterwheels drawing in magical energy from the water for some purpose you couldn't identify, as well as golden eyes in the darkness. The creature fled, and you decided not to pay it much mind for now, instead focusing on your objective. You helped Pirin be less of an ass, and pushed open the gate.

Once inside you had an encounter with the creature you passed by before, a young dragon. Pirin spoke with it in draconic and pissed it off so it would blow all of its magic on a single last of fire, and then dragged you down a hallway to escape from it when it wore itself out. You got incredibly lost, and then put your dragon skills to use to figure out where Allegiset would keep his gold. You located the right room and worked with Pirin to get your fire back, learning how to fire sing without needing to speak draconic. Your fire triggered the switch to open the vault door under your feet, and you fell onto a pile of coins.

Pirin tossed a torch to you and went off to fetch some rope to climb down with, and you took some time to bask in the gold. Most of your strength returned, and you learned that gold is a source of power for dragons, which came in handy when Pirin ran screaming back into the room, jumped into the vault and the dragon came roaring in after him.
>>
The dragon claimed that you lounging around on the gold and using it to recover your strength was stealing power from Allegiset, who would surely notice and return. For foiling his plan of doing exactly the same thing, but likely with more subtlety and more potent results, he attacked you. You had Pirin run off to try to find something to help, and engaged the dragon. You nearly died in the process, suffering some very severe wounds, but a misstep by the dragon gave you exactly the opening you needed to stab him in the back and then cleave upwards to split him from shoulder to snout.

You collapsed in a heap in a pool of dragon blood, surrounded by gold, and your wings, claws and draconic sight returned to you. For a brief moment you may have even turned into a full dragon, but that could also have just been in your head. Pirin returned with treasure, and you both decided to get out of there ASAP, pausing just long enough to grab an odd ruby from the ground. With your wings back you flew out of the vault, and then danced your way out of the castle with Pirin. You returned through the portal victorious, only to find Vein waiting for you, along with your friends, unconscious and chained up. Vein claimed she wanted to change teams since yours was the winning one. You told her that she could travel with you for now and see about signing up properly later.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

Bu the way, i wasn't awake when you asked for the review thing so here's my take on priority.

The overarching quest to become a dragon
The character moments
The adventures and subplots
The combat
The action sequences
The world (wryyyy) and its history
The romance

Basically i'm fine with how it's been Except for the suddenly (almost) forced on romance, but please at least don't make us go off in a completely different direction or make it so we in the end have to choose between love/friends versus becoming a dragon, since i being a dragon in the end is kind of what i came to this quest for.
As long as you avoid that i'm perfectly fine with how you're doing this.

Vein grins at you and chuckles a bit.

"What, nervous? About me?"

You fold your arms.

"Alright. Tell me. What's your bargaining chip here?"

Vein cackles a bit before speaking directly into your head.

'Tirio is free. He got Millie back and made her betray your friends. Two of them are already captured, one is on trial already and might be executed soon. My loyalty is broken, the person I was bound to is dead, and I want to save my sister. Let's go kill Tirio and cause a stir, and save your friends while we're at it.'

I'm not sure what you mean with this. If you mean they'll replace him, yeah, that'll happen, but it'll break control over Millie at least. If you mean we need to replace him, that's pointless. He's a pawn with no real power and ideally the kingdom will be dissolved, so his position as general is meaningless.

You focus on your necklace for a moment.

'Cenere, status report?'

There's a brief pause before he replies.

'I'm fine presently, but we have a situation. Leer and Esrito have both been captured. Leer is set to hang in a few days, and Esrito is being tried for a number of crimes under his alias, Gimbly Durab. The trial is taking substantially longer thanks to "Gimbly" having a number of connections he's exploiting, but I worry that he plans to sell us out for his own benefit if the pressure is on.'

You sigh a little. Wonderful.

'Thanks, Cenere. Do what you can.'

'I always do, madam.'

You look at Vein for a moment. You don't really know Leer so you don't know how valuable an asset he really is, but Gimbly was one of Tirio's right hand men, and the fact that he might fake being a double agent to keep close to Tirio concerns you.

"I'll buy your story, but I'm not in any position to do anything about it. I've got a mission of my own to take care of."

Vein pauses for a moment, smile wavering.

"I see."

You sigh a little bit and step closer to her.

"I'm trying to find something and I can't go back without it. You can come with me and help me find it, it might help us out, but I'm not changing my course."

Vein sighs softly and slumps.

"Breaking my heart... Alright then. It's not like Millie is in any serious jeopardy, the doc wouldn't mess with her head without me there too."

You pat her on the shoulder.

"By the by... who did you serve?"

Vein grins and leaps back, saluting.

"Prince Eannes, may he rot!"

Pirin chuckles softly.

"That crazy kid? Yeah, he was miserable... Turned out to be a necromancer and everything. I guess that's why you're so creepy?"

Vein stares at him, grinning deviously.

"I'm perfectly normal~"

>Can I just spend time with Kat?

No! You need...magic daggers and a magic bow?

Sena can always make a new carved staff and enhance it with her power.

Kat...Kat needs a slingshot for her potions. Magic one that can hone on a target preferable.
>>
"Vein, wake them up and get Gil healed. Pirin, let's see that loot."

Pirin starts turning out his pockets. Necklaces, rings, a golden chalice, a bracelet of some sort, a pair of golden knives covered in runes and a shirt that looks like it was woven from golden threads with a red gemstone in the middle of the chest. While he unpacks them all you reach out to Cenere again, but he's silent. He sorts them by the color of the gemstone, and pauses, picking up one of the rings.

"Finders fee?"

Vein waves a hand over your friends, the metal chains vanishing. They wake up slowly, first Gil, then Fiona and Sena. Fiona immediately turns bright red.

"B-Bondage is not a daytime activity!"

Sena moves over to Gil and focuses on his wound while Vein snickers.

"When the sun sets I'll try again then."

Fiona looks faint.

You give Pirin a nod.

"Go for it, you earned it."

He smiles and slips it on, focusing on it to try to activate it. As he does that you turn your attention to Gil.

"How are you holding up?"

Gil shrugs slightly.

"I feel like the night watch... Parts of me keep passing out..."

Fiona and Sena get to work on healing him and you smirk a bit.

"Well, you should feel accomplished."

He looks at you and blinks.

"Does it have something to do with all the blood all over you?"

You nod.

"I killed a dragon. I split him in half with my sword and stole some treasure. All because of you."

Gil thrusts his fist into the air.

"Nice work, boss."

He smirks a bit.

>>
You give Gil a sly smile and gently shake his shoulder.

“All that and more. We're gonna get you healed, we're gonna get Kat's arm taken care of, and we're gonna enjoy the festival. You're looking at a dragonslayer, Gil. I've proven that I'm as strong as one. It's all up from here. I have the strength and skill, now I just need the form. And I'm already halfway there if we're being honest.”

Gil smirks a little bit.

“Taret's going to be so disappointed when he'll be able to ride you but not ride you...”

You chuckle a bit and gently bop him on the nose.

“Clever.”

Fiona smiles a bit.

“Sena, you're doing quite well. Your brother will be right as rain in no time at all, and then we can get to work on... What was her name again? Kat?”

Sena nods and smiles.

“Mhmm. Think we can fix her broken arm?”

Fiona nods.

“I think that anything is possible so long as it's for the right reasons. I think that qualifies.”

Gil slowly rises to his feet and stretches.

“I'm fine, honest... I mean, I could do with a drink but the cut is all scabbed over and I don't think I'm in danger of a scar. Let's get over to Kat and see about-”

He's cut off by Pirin's cheer of success. The ring on his finger is glowing brightly, but that's perhaps the less noticeable change. A sword of glowing golden energy has formed in his hand, cracking from time to time with little bolts of electricity. He runs over and swings it at a tree, the blade passing through it, and he frowns.

“Well that was disappointing. I-”

The tree sparks a bit before exploding, sending Pirin tumbling backwards towards the group, and he ends up sitting by Vein, covered in soot and smelling like a bonfire, a long splinter caught in one of the buttons of his shirt. Vein grabs the splinter and examines it.

“A sword that makes toothpicks. Nice work. A bit inefficient though.”

“...No take backs, as long as we sort out what does what first. I thought that ring was just a ring. Let's find a mutually agreeable deal. I don't think you need a lightning sword that makes things explode while telling stories, right?”

Pirin shrugs a little bit.

“You never know, taverns can be pretty crazy places. But I think I get your point.”

He dismisses the sword and takes off the ring.

“Let's... uh... I guess we could just go down the line and experiment with this stuff until we work it out...”

Sena perks up.

“Let's go back to the inn first, we can use the books! And I can help heal Kat while you do that!”

You nod a bit.

“Let's head back to the inn then.”

You gather up your loot along with your friends, everyone slipping things into pockets and concealed places so that the people in town don't spot you. You bring the haul up to the inn room, which is a little cramped with the crowd, but not uncomfortably so. You spread the items out on the floor to inspect them while Fiona and Sena tend to Kat. You've got your sight, the reference books and time. Time to get to work.

-

You have 3 necklaces, 5 rings, a golden chalice, a bracelet, 2 knives, and the shirt. I could have you roll for each individual item, but instead I want 6 rolls. Luck rolls. Roll a d20 and add nothing. You've got 12 unidentified items and the ring of lightning sword thing. Each roll will determine how awful/awesome two items are. Now I get to have some fun with this. I'll write up the list of goodies and throw it in here for you guys to look over, then I'll pass out while you decide what to do with your swag.
>>
You quickly determine that one of the rings and the bracelet are duds. Not nonmagical, but spells that don't do anything except vent magical energy uselessly when worn. Admittedly this has a use for powerful mages looking for something to train with, but it's not exactly what you need now. They might be good for Sena though, if you can find a way to fine tune them so that excess divine energy of each type can be vented safely and she remains balanced.

You look at the knives next. Simple enchantments to keep them clean and polished, as well as sharp, but nothing too fancy. They're golden knives, which is fancy, but the spells on them are as simple as can be for the most part, at least until you take a closer look. Underlying all of those enchantments is a base enchantment worked into the gold itself to harden it and enhance the durability of the material, similar to your sword. These golden knives are tougher than steel.

The next item to call to you is the chalice, and you toy around with it a little. Conjuration magic of some sort. You try to activate it blindly to see what it makes but nothing happens until you realize you're thirsty and it fills with water. You inspect the liquid and find it to be nothing more than chilled, pure water, and you take a sip. Refreshing. You try to think of something else to conjure, but nothing happens until you think of a need to be filled. You need something to celebrate your victory, the water is replaced with wine. You need a light snack, and it fills with grapes. You decide to finish experimenting with that later, snacking on grapes while you work.

Up next, the other rings. The first one you examine is similar to the dud one, except that instead of venting the energy it stores it to be accessed later. If you had some sort of arbitrary system of measuring energy, and if that system said that your current maximum magical energy was, say, 4 points, this could probably hold 2 of them at a time.
>>
The second ring is full of air magic, and it doesn't take much for you to work out that this ring lets the wearer stop breathing completely without harm for a while when activated. At a guess it's maybe an hour, give or take. While you don't anticipate encountering clouds of poison gas or underwater shenanigans, it's nice to have the option.

The last ring is interesting in its effects. When worn, the wearer can reach through a small portal to another location. You can't see what's on the other end of the portal, so if you reach blindly you're at the mercy of whatever is on the other end, but it only takes one try for you to pass the chalice across the room to Kat, and you swipe a few more grapes on your second attempt. You can think of a few good ways to use the ring, assuming you know precisely where to aim.

Next up, the shirt. The red gemstone gives away that it's fire magic, but you decide to investigate it anyway. The wearer is always comfortably warm regardless of climate, which probably makes it exceptionally snuggly despite being made of gold fibers. When active it bursts into flames that don't harm the wearer, but make coming into direct contact with them exceptionally painful. Each flare of flame lasts only a few seconds, but you're pretty sure that's all you need.

And then, at long last, the necklaces. The first one locks the wearer at a certain vertical position while allowing horizontal movement. It's not flight, and when it stops being active your vertical momentum is exactly what it was, but now winning long jump contests will be a breeze, and if someone is falling it buys time for someone else to ensure they have a soft landing.
>>
The next one strikes you as an odd item, though you're sure someone somewhere would have a use for it. It makes the wearer immune to divine magic of both sorts, essentially cutting them off from all the Essence energy around them and making it flow around and away from them. While this does mean that necromantic spells would have no effect, an injection of blight would still harm their soul and healing magic would have no effect until the necklace is removed. You picture a zombie with one of these things running around a battlefield immune to holy magic and shudder.

The last item is your personal favorite because it has a dragon on it. Also because of its effect. Maybe it's because you like to think dragons are the best at everything, maybe it's because you know it's true, but you're quite pleased with this necklace because it makes the wearer better at everything they do, sort of. You can activate it to pick a physical trait, a “stat” if you will, and bolster it, and it stays enhanced until you change it. When changed, the previous boost becomes a penalty, so you're always better at one thing and worse at another. You could spend more points for a bigger boost, but then you'd also have a bigger penalty. It could probably be made worthwhile in some situations. The only downside is that rapid activations would degrade the magic. Changing things once a day would be fine, but any more frequently and the penalties would get worse and worse as the spell feeds on you, and you're pretty sure it would get kind of clingly while recharging. Right now it's set to enhance Speed and degrade Smarts.

How about the ring that vents magical energy? If you ever decide to learn some magic tricks you'd be able to train up your magic capacity/strength that way.
>>

You want to surpass your father in story-telling, right? What better artifact than a magical chalice, that fills itself with any drink you want while being a testament to the first of many stories you'll be telling about me?

Necklace of vertical momentum to Pirin ;is a nice enchantment but not really worth keeping when we can fly.

The Chalice is amazing it basically eliminates logistical issues that come with traveling, and might even be able to create more common items for alchemy.

Not sure the vent ring is actually worth a shit for weaklings. It's only mentioned as being useful as a training tool for powerful mages or a way to balance Sena - which is a pretty good reason to keep it instead of giving it to this jerkoff, really.

You hold out the necklace to him.

"This should make travelling fun and easy."

He puts it on and examines it for a moment while you explain how it works, and he immediately jumps up and hovers, clouds forming under him, and he slowly shifts to a sitting position.

"...alright, this is more useful to me than a lightning sword. And potentially cooler. I don't have a lot of magical power, but this thing doesn't seem to use much as all... I can ride a cloud throne all around town."

Gil picks up the knives to examine them.

"I'll accept that name, but only because I can't think of a better one right now."

You smirk a bit.

"Granted. Now then, what to do with the rest..."

Kat pulls out her pipe, and you realize she's been conjuring things with it almost the whole time that it's been beside her.

"I will fight you for this thing. Even if whatever is inside it ends up vanishing in the morning or something dumb like that, this thing is great."

Sena grabs the vent ring and bracelet.

"I wanna see if we can find someone to alter the spells on these to make them more useful, but I still want them for now just in case."

Give one the ring and the other the bracelet is what my post means.
>>
>>42886034
Ring of mana should probably go to a primary caster.
>>
>>42886053
We need it for our use of both firesing with igniting our sword when we also need to save enough to be able to fly, so it's perfect for us.
>>
>>42886084
It's useful for us, but in most encounters we'll burn one or zero spell points. It's better for someone that actually relies heavily on their magic, since they have more need of them.
>>
>>42886107
Our last encounter (where we could use magic) we had to hold back and retreat because of our lack of SP, which is an indication that we clearly are lacking it. This artifact is, as i said, perfect for us.
The reason why we have only used one everytime is because we need one over to fly.
>>
>>42886140
>Our last encounter (where we could use magic) we had to hold back
Maybe that's how you interpreted it. I voted not to use firesinging because of it's potential AoE at first and didn't use it later because our sword is a dozen times more efficient with a better attack modifier.

>and retreat because of our lack of SP, which is an indication that we clearly are lacking it.
We retreated because the opponent was deliberately impossible to defeat at that time and our primary objective was completed.

>This artifact is, as i said, perfect for us.
Which I still don't agree with.

>The reason why we have only used one everytime is because we need one over to fly.
Or because we don't want to blow a limited resource on a singular attack which we don't know the relative strength of instead of the buff with a better modifier that usually lasts for the entire encounter. 2 SP isn't going to change that for me.
>>
>>42886236
For comparison, the fire buff on your sword means that a successful hit will deal an extra minor wound in addition to whatever your sword did. This can lead to double minor wounds, which just fills slots, but that's been enough to turn the tide in some fights.

Firesinging inflicts a wound one level higher than normal if it hits, so a success is always at least a Major wound, but you've already tasted the bitter failure that can result from bad rolls with it.
>>
Rolled 4 (1d20)

Evens give Vein a thing, odds nice try guy.
>>
>>42886236
>We retreated because the opponent was deliberately impossible to defeat at that time and our primary objective was completed.
Wouldn't have ben impossible to defeat with more use of Dragon-fire considering it purges the blight she is made of.
We retreated because our sword ran out of fire whil we had to save our last SP in case we needed it to escape with our friends.

We have use in SP for both melee and magic attack, which is what we use as our primary fighting methods, which is why i'm still wanting to hold on to the item that fits that best.
>>
>>42886502
It was a pretty big pool of blight, I'm not sure that we would've been able to purge it for less than 10 SP even if we had been willing to try.

We do have a fair use for it, I'm not debating that, but we have the option of not using SP and still being useful. A primary caster has more need for that ring in battle, from my perspective, than the girl that can chop a fucking dragon in half without using SP.
>>
>>42886577
While being able to chop a dragon in half without using xp, one shouldn't forget almost dying and only able to do that thanks to extreme luck with the dice. If we had ben able to use our own SP at the time we would both have a viable ranged counter instead of baiting out his fire and also do a lot more damage with our sword.
It's a question of making us able to use 200% more SP considering we only were able to use one if we wanted to fly. We need that item more than someone invested in magic that should already have a lot more SP where 2 more does't make as much difference as it would do for us.
>>
>>42886644
>200% more
Our spell point cap is 4, we could use 3 before being unable to fly. 66%.

Still, fair point. I'm uncertain if they get SP at a better rate than us, though it'd be hard not to, what with bricking 2 of the 3 rolls to increase SP at level up. Vein, probably, because she's an elemental and made of magic, but Fiona's a human.
>>
>>42886702
Are you also counting that we mostly have used our gauntlets when/some time before we're in a fighting situation, meaning that we have one less SP?
>>
Divine magic users seem to have ultra fast regeneration. Sena seems to regain her magic near instantly

>>

I think she has a "As long as you believe" bonus too, which makes her spells cost less/nothing so it could actually be worth looking into/learning sometime.
>>
>>42886796

“I-It's not what you think!”

Vein snickers.

“Nope, it's what /you/ think~ And what you think is practically delicious.”

Fiona turns bright red and hides her face, and Vein selects the ring that stores magical energy.

Fiona slips on her new ring and smiles a bit, while Vein does the same, except the ring immediately turns blue-green and Vein looks paler than usual. She smirks a little.

“And now my little doppelganger needs to incubate. If I ever get killed, the version of me in here will slowly grow a core of her own. Who wants to be the daddy seahorse?”

When everyone stares at her blankly she shrugs a bit.

“Nevermind. Clearly no one here has ever stared intently at strange tropical marine life. Suffice to say, now I can just pawn this off on someone.”

Gil clears his throat.

“Can we wrap up our unfinished business? We've figured out how to reward people, but I believe there's a festival going on. I'd like to go and live it up.”

Pirin rolls his eyes.

“That happens at sunset, we've still got a bit before then. In the mean time, there are games, there's a fair and lots of vendors.”

Sena grins.

“I wanna go play some games!”

Vein laughs a bit.

“I'll join you. I could use a laugh.”

Kat latches onto Gil and smiles a bit.

“We're gonna hit the vendors and get some supplies.”

You shrug a bit.

“I'll slip on some of it and pack the rest away for later. I don't need to get decked out all the time, right?”

Sena nods and smiles. Gil and Kat head for the door and Gil gives you a small nod.

“I promise to keep her out of trouble but I'm not apologizing if she gets out of hand.”

Kat raises her magic chalice high.

“We're gonna revel tonight once we get what I need!”

Kat drags Gil off, and Fiona giggles a bit.

“Such a lively pair... Well, I must be off...”

She heads for the door, and Pirin kicks off the wall, hovering along beside her.

“See you later, my lady!”

She bows low and heads out, Pirin waving at you as he makes his exit. Vein pokes at the items a bit.

“Wearing too much magical gear can cause problems if it's not all attuned to work together. The auras conflict, gets messy... I'd try to pick carefully, you don't want a misfire if two of them resonate and they go off at random.”

You regard the pile of loot for a moment and grab the shirt, slipping it on and putting your normal clothes on over it. No need to flaunt it right now, and you don't think it'll harm your outfit anyway. You try to work out what else to bring when you realize something. You can use the portal ring to reach anywhere you can pinpoint, which means you can reach out to Taret, maybe Cenere, and possibly Millie if Vein can help you locate her. In fact, depending on how the aim works, you could even try to reach into the tomb to grab stuff. Which reminds you... You pull out the ruby from before and examine it, and Vein tilts her head. She pokes it gently and then looks at you.

"So what are you gonna make with this?"

You blink.

"Wanna run that by me one more time?"

Vein pokes the ruby again.

"This is a dragoheart ruby, a powerful catalyst for fire elemental spells and useful in making magic items. You've got one that's clear, flawless and a decent size. I don't have all my dad's skills, but I know a thing or two about making magic items. Earth elementals know gemstones well, and water gives me a grasp of the flow of magic."

"I need something to protect me. Something that'll soften blows or deflect them entirely."

Vein grins.

"I think I know what you need. How about somryhing like the Blast Bracers used by the Order of Steel?"

She pauses.

"OK, nevermind, you probably don't know what those are. I'll explain. Pretend someone is swinging a sword at you, and you'd rather they didn't. The bracer makes an explosion, a small one, right at the point of impact of their weapon and facing away from you. It blows their weapon back, or at least takes some of the force out of it. They're really good panic buttons. I can't make amazing ones with just this, but I can certainly help you bang your enemies."

You shake your head a bit.

"I'm not too worried about physical attacks. I'm more worried about spells. Anything for that?"

Vein nods.

"I have an idea, but it's... Well, it's more of a side-effect. There was this mage who called himself Tallow, and his reserve of magical energy was limitless but he never learned to cast a single spell. He made magic items and just used those. Once he made a bracelet that could create blasts of fire and explosions by drawing in his energy and then expelling it.

One day, after beating another mage at sharp shooting with lightning bolts, he was attacked, and the bracelet sucked in the spell. The other mage tried again with the same effect. On the third try all the energy overflowed and Tallow was burned instead of zapped. I could recreate that item, turn spells cast around you into firepower, but if you don't vent it properly then you'll burn too."

Indeed, but getting because we're on that path doesn't mean we're completely jacked yet, and getting attacked while that happens by such a strong thing even if the risk is low, is something i'd rather not take.

Yes... I want a game of dice to be presented to us! They'd think we cheat every time considering we somehow always have 3 times higher chance to roll something high.

"Let's get going."

Sena cheers and practically drags you off, leading you outside. In the morning there had been decorations here and there but you barely noticed them, and you can't say you were paying that much attention on the way back, but now that you get a good look the town is lively, almost rowdy, as the festival begins in full. Sena immediately heads for the rows of booths with carnival games. Most cost a copper piece to try your hand at, and she smiles at you.

"I wanna try them all... What should we do first?"

You have your pick of games of skill like ring and ball toss games for prizes, strength tests like "ring the bell" and a log splitting challenge, and some games of luck involving dice or fishing for wooden ducks with marks on the bottom. There's a dunk tank, some people playing cards, and an old man offering fortune telling to anyone who manages to best him in a game of riddles.

You head to one of the tables and smile at Sena.

"Let's try some luck games first. How are you with dice?"

Sena blinks.

"Gil said I'm not allowed to play those anymore... I'm not exactly... honest about them."

You shrug a bit.

"He's not here, right? If you wanna play, then play."

Sena pulls a copper piece from her pocket and sets it on the table, and the man smiles at her.

"Hi there, little lady. Would you like to try your luck?"

Sena nods.

"What are the stakes?"

The man passes her a die.

"High rolls, double or nothing."

Sena nods and smiles, taking the die and pausing. She looks at it closely.

"Weighted towards the low numbers. You can see the seam where the wood was split. Five silver pieces for my silence."

The man takes a slow breath.

"Four."

Sena nods and holds out her hand, smiling as he gives her the coins before turning back to you.

"Look, my lucky day! Everyone should play this!"

You smirk a bit and pat Sena on the head.

“Come on, troublemaker. If you're gonna pull stuff like that then help me with the bell ringing.”

Sena jingles her coins a bit.

“Aww, but I wanted to try the duck game. They're a lot harder to rig properly and I wanna make sure that he's doing it right. It's a little embarrassing if you can't even pull that off right.”

You shrug a bit and head for the bell game.

“Suit yourself. I'll just be over here swinging a giant mallet to send a weight flying up to hit a bell and if I win a prize then you won't be getting anything.”

Sena pockets the coins and smiles a bit.

“Mean. If you win a stuffed animal I want it.”

You smirk slightly and laugh a bit.

“Right, because I'm going to keep it for myself.”

You sift through your pockets for change and pull out a bloodied gold coin. Probably best not to pay in gold soaked in dragon blood. Plus staring at it for too long will probably make you zone out. You pocket it and pull out your coin purse, pulling out a few copper for the games and paying the man running the bell ringing game. He examines the coin, then looks at you. “I predict... Good fortune for you tonight, but not with the games. I foresee you playing three games, and when you lose the third one, a mysterious man will come into your life.”

He gestures to the fortune telling booth.

“Sorry, my father told me to say that to you. He said that the meaning would become clear to you later.”

You nod slightly.

“Right... Well, I'm just here to hit something with a hammer.”

He smiles and offers you three hammers.

“Light, medium and heavy. The heavy one is hardest to swing but packs the most punch. For the truly strong, this is the best bet.”

You immediately grab the heavy hammer and inspect it, before lining up to take a swing.

You take a deep breath, heft the hammer, and swing as hard as you can. You really should have expected the hammer head to fall off, but it still catches you off guard when, right before impact, it loosens slightly and slides right to the end, barely staying on the handle and costing you most of your force. You're not disappointed though. The weight sails upwards and taps the bell before plummeting back down, and the man smiles at you.

“I'll take a bear.”

He hands it to you with a proud smile.

“I made this one myself. Here, with my apologies about the hammer.”

You take the bear and look it over. It's fairly simple, stitched from burlap and cloth, but there's something pleasingly plain about it. It's nothing fancy, with its little black button eyes and black thread smile. It's just a well-made toy, and you smile a bit. It makes you think of the bear you had when you were little, and how you had ripped the ears off of it and crudely sewn a pair of wing onto the back in attempt to turn it into a dragon. You'd feel bad ripping this one apart to make a dragon though, and Sena did ask for a toy. You turn and hand it to her, and she immediately hugs it to her chest.

“Thank you!”

She hugs you tightly and giggles a bit.

“I'm gonna call him... Hmm. What do you think I should name him?”

You look at the bear for a moment, then at her, and you smile.

“How about Gil?”

Sena just stares at you, before looking at the bear.

“First of all, he doesn't look like a Gil to me. Second of all, if we name him that then Vein is going to make some kind of joke about having Gil's head between her thighs and it's all downhill from there.”

You nod and smirk.

“Allegiset then. What do you think?”

Sena shakes her head.

“I don't really wanna name him after the spirit of an ancient dragon. It feels demeaning. To the bear I mean.”

She examines the bear for a moment and you shrug.

“Yazai then? That sounds fun and exotic.”

Sena lets out a long sigh and hugs the bear to her chest.

“This isn't the bear for an exotic name... I need something that's fun and cute and heartwarming, and...”

You nod slightly and look at the bear's face for a moment, trying to figure out a good name.

“...Sir Bearington?”

Sena blinks, looks at the bear, then smiles.

“Can we make him a tiny tabard and try to win a little horse for him to ride?”

You flex your bicep and smile at her.

“I'll win him a horse no problem. Don't you worry, Sir Bearington is gonna be the envy of stuffed animal knights across the kingdom when we're done.”

Sena nods and squeezes the bear a bit, smiling brightly.

"Let's try that dart game and see how it goes."

Sena nods and takes your hand, gently pulling you along with a smile, clutching the bear to her chest with the other. The dart game is simple enough, you just have to hit moving targets to win prizes. You grab a few darts and put down your copper piece, and the man clears his throat.

"One copper piece per two throws."

You set down the extras and smile.

"I bet I can do it in one."

The man folds his arms and smirks.

"That's the idea. Let's see if you really can though."

He turns the crank, the targets starting to move, and you ready your first throw. You've never thrown darts before, but it can't be that hard, right? Your first toss is a miserable failure, the dart tumbling through the air, and Sena grabs your hand, wrapping your fingers around the dart properly.

"Do it like this, alright?"

You nod a bit and turn your attention back to the targets. You line up your throw and let it go, and the dart connects with the post that is moving it back and forth. The man chuckles.

You head for the fortuneteller with a small smile on your lips. His prediction had been completely wrong, and you can't wait to rub his face in it. The tent is pretty shabby, all things considered, and it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the festival theme of dark blue and silver with its deep, bold reds and golden swirls. As you sit down in the chair the fortuneteller turns to you and smiles, and you pause.

You can see the seams on his mask, the places where the false skin doesn't quite match his real skin tone. The beard is obviously fake, and the eyebrows probably aren't fooling anyone either. There's something familiar about those eyes though, but you don't place it until you hear his voice.

"Hello, traveller. How are you?"

But if he's here, then who do they have locked in prison?

"I can see... yes, you've been travelling far. Busy young lady."

Vein lied or didn't tell the whole truth, either that or her intel is old.

"I predict that you will meet a handsome man takes tonight at the edge of town. Perhaps you will dance with him, there will be music after all. He has many things to tell you."

You kinda want to punch Gimbly, or whatever his real name is, right in his smug face right now for his cheesy act, but you find yourself laughing a little at his antics. He chuckles a bit.

Your spirit sight reveals a few things to you. One is that the crystal ball is indeed magical, and two, that several people nearby have some form of magic item on them. Two of them, who are looking your way, have concealed magic swords.

"So why are you here?"

Gimbly reclines.

"Let me tell you a tale. A man was in prison, set to die by execution, when he was given a choice. Help capture someone, or die painfully. Seeking to preserve his own life, he decided to pretend to help. And so, the helpful professor rigged up something that could track her magic earring, and he was planted in the town to serve as her bait."

The two men walk towards you slowly and casually.

"What they didn't suspect was that he cared for her life at all, as he was notorious for caring about nothing. They also didn't count on him having help waiting for him, two of a kind."

He taps the crystal ball, which crackles with electricity.

"Wanna do the honors? I mean, she's been stuck in there the whole trip and she's been dying to see you since her uncle got his hands on her. Oh, and she made the professor forget ever making the earrings in case you were worried."

You grab the glass orb and feel your skin tingling a bit. The men aren't too far away now, and you can feel a gentle pulsing of electricity coming from the crystal ball like Millie knocking at it from inside.

“Mr. Durab, I think it's showtime.”

Gimbly nods slightly and slowly pulls off his disguise piece by piece.

“I'll take the one on the left, you two take the one on the right?”

You throw the orb down hard and it shatters, a bolt of lightning shooting straight up into the air with an enormous boom and a cheerful giggle. There's a hole in the tent now, which has caught fire and is quickly burning down around you. Gimbly pulls his long, slender blade from his sleeve, and you pull your sword from its sheath before chuckling as you notice someone else taking an interest in what's going on, Vein sprinting in your direction.

“I don't think either of us are going to have to do very much.”

Gimbly follows your gave and sighs, putting away his sword.

“Well then, we may as well enjoy the show.”

He drags the chairs out of the burning tent and sets them up, laying across one as you sit in the other. The men, clearly shocked by the sudden bolt of lightning, look at you with confused and concerned expressions. Gimbly points behind them.

“I called them two of a kind because of stuff like this.”

Vein dashes at them from behind and slams her hands into the ground, green and blue energy flowing towards them and brown metal chains erupting from the ground, winding around their arms and bodies.

“Vein likes to say that she calls herself that because of blood veins, but really it's about veins of minerals and metals deep underground. Dissolve them in water, purify them, and then manipulate the resulting pure materials, like iron or in this case copper.”
>>
Overhead thick black clouds are forming, and you can see them churn and swirl, blue flickers moving across their surfaces.

“Meanwhile Millie is a storm, all flash and excitement. But when she gets really charged up about something, stand clear. All she needs is a lightning rod, and boom.”

As if on cue, there's a loud clap of thunder, and a huge blue bolt shoots out of the sky, right at the two men. As the blinding flash dies down you can see Millie above the two men, one boot on each of their faces and giving you a thumbs up. The two men's clothes are charred and burned and then look dazed and in a lot of pain, but there's no sign of injury on them. Millie jumps down from them and skips towards you.

“Hi! Miss me?”

Vein tackles her from behind, arms turning to mud as she hugs Millie tightly.

“I was so worried! I'm so glad you're alright! I... I...”

Vein looks at you, chuckles nervously, and blushes, before clearing her throat.

“Not a word to anyone. I have an image to maintain.”

Millie turns and hugs her back and squeals, giggling.

“Veiny! You're alright!”

Vein nods.

“Well duh, you know me. They can't kill me without spoiling their own fun, and I'm too slippery to hold on to for long.”

You pull Millie and Vein into a hug and smile at Vein.

“I won't tell anyone, but I'm getting in on this hug. I missed you too, Millie.”

Millie turns a bit and hugs you tightly, squeezing you and Vein, and you can feel mud soaking through your shirt.

“Daw, I missed you too!”

She looks over at the men and bolts over to them, inspecting them from head to toe while Sena takes her place in the group hug, smiling a bit. Millie pulls a badge from each of their pockets and holds them up high.

“Ooh, Order of Steel! I know what to do~”

Millie grabs their swords and starts to glow softly before putting them back. The men wobble and fall over, and she smiles at you.

“Swords are heavy. Now theirs make everything else heavy too. They had a light-as-a-feather enchantment on them, so I redirected it a little bit~”

Vein snickers and walks over to her, holding out the ruby.

“I've got a present for you later. Your cousin asked me for some help with something. Wanna help me out?”

Millie's face lights up and she grins.

“Oh! Oh! Can I please?”

You nod a bit.

“Sure thing, but first, are we in any danger? And what happened to everyone else?”

Millie snaps her fingers and her whole body glows as she removes her blindfold. The crowd, which you had hardly noticed was gathering around you, suddenly freezes, and people start to turn and walk away, talking about how they have somewhere to be. Millie puts her blindfold back on and smiles brightly
>>
“Nope! And... That's complicated... Let's see... Leer is dead, the twins are in hiding, your parents were last spotted heading south, Lecot faked his own death and hasn't been seen since, and Taret and Ruby are... somewhere. There was a report of a dragon heading north towards the sea, which could have been him.”

You look around a bit, the festival picking back up almost exactly where it left off.

“So... No immediate threats to my life? Everything is fine for the time being?”

Millie nods.

“Pretty much. Why?”

You smirk and walk back into the tent, grabbing a pair of stuffed horses.

“Because I came here to party.”

You pass one to Sena and put the bunny on one of the horses while she does the same with Sir Bearington.

“And I intend to party.”

“Now if you don't mind, I'd like to dance. And drink. Maybe drink, I'm not sure. I'm definitely dancing though.”

Gimbly nods a bit.

“Dancing is always fun. I'll tag along.”

Sena smiles a little bit.

“I'm not much for dancing... I'll get Sir Bearington home safe and sound, alright?”

Millie turns to Vein.

“Wanna dance?”

Vein shrugs a bit.

“We both know I can't dance. I mean, I can try, but the results will be what they usually are.”

Millie nods and turns to you.

“We're gonna get to work on the magic item so Vein doesn't cry when someone insults her dancing.”

Vein tenses.

“I didn't cry!”

Millie hugs her and scoops her up, walking away with her, Sena following close behind.

“See you later!”

Gimbly removes his robes and tosses them into the burning tent, revealing a fairly expensive-looking outfit underneath, the kind of flashy thing one would expect a wandering bard to wear.

“Shall we get going?”

You nod and walk with him towards the sound of distant music. The people of the town are coaching newcomers the traditional dances of the festival in preparation for the night's activities and group dances, while some people are off dancing on their own, moving as they please to the music that's playing. Gimbly heads off to join the people dancing around, probably to show off.

You head over to the group and watch for a bit, taking in the scene before you. There are a few old men and women moving around and teaching the dance steps while some younger townspeople are demonstrating. From the look of things, the men are “the sun” and the women are “the moon”, each couple spiraling around each other as the dance goes on. The men make grand movements and take long steps, slow and precise, while the movements for the women are smaller and more rapid, with a lot more passion and expression.

Bit by bit you start to puzzle out the major components, and you find yourself moving to the beat a little bit. It's a dance representing the balance between good and evil, light and dark, the day and the night. Admittedly you find the focus on virtuous men and tempestuous, seductive women a bit much, but everyone seems like they're having fun. Two girls walk over to you out of nowhere and before you can react they drag you towards the group with big smiles on their faces.

“Come on! This way! You can't just watch!”

You try to protest, try to offer some objection aside from throwing them off of you, but they seem relentless, and you did say you wanted to dance. They practically throw you at one of the young men in the group, who smiles a little as he catches you and spins you around to slow your fall.

“Don't worry too much about getting it perfect. The festival is about having fun.”

He tries to lead you in the dance and teach you the move more directly.

The music plays, the people dance, and you try to find your footing. At first it's difficult, and the man has to correct you a few times, but before too long you're showing off a bit. Several people cheer in your direction, and as the music stops the man offers you his arm as the crowd disperses.

"My name is Dalvian, and you dance fantastically. I never see anyone learn the steps so quickly. Please, let me buy you a drink."

Aside from that being general foolishness, Kotijah was worried that just going to a church during their nightly party would result in her being drugged and taken advantage of previously, IIRC. This is a once per year festival under the same religion, the same risk is present, if not moreso.

Maybe, *maybe* if her friends were immediately present, but finding the others lost previously.
>>
You shake your head.

“Sorry, but I don't know you all that well. I know this is a festival and all, so I'll probably see you later, but right now I'm still finding my footing. Sorry.”

He shrugs a little and smiles.

“Fair enough. The offer still stands though. Come find me later and I'll get you whatever you want. I know all the best spots in town.”

He turns and walks off, and when you turn away from him you find Gimbly smiling at you.

“Probably wise. Nice kid, but I don't trust him. Can't afford to get too involved with anyone in a town like this... Believe me, I know. Leave only footprints and fond memories. And if you plan to fool around or make friends, wait til they're drunk enough that you're only a ghost to them in the morning. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go and pull one of my favorite party tricks. Gimbly Durab is back in business, and I'm gonna cause a little stir here before I run off and lose my pursuers. I'll find you again when they're pointing the wrong way.”

He strides past you towards the main crowd, pulling two apples from somewhere under his coat and juggling with in one hand while pulling a wand out with the other.

“Anyone wanna see a magic trick?”

Well, now you need to figure out what to do. The sun is getting close to setting, and people look like they're getting ready to cut loose. Several people in robes, including Fiona, are making their way towards the musicians. Under their white robes you can see traces of black, and they're wearing moon pendants underneath the brilliant suns hanging around their necks. The moment the sun sets this party is starting in full.

I think they can handle themselves. Evidently Kat had been to a few revels before, and Gil tends to be very perceptive and extremely distrustful.

>>42932556
But it's been stated several times that this religion tends to be hedonistic...? I'm not talking about outright rape, you don't have have to do that to be a hedonist.

There's probably been a significant amount of drugging and raping, though, even if by the people that would've done it anyway taking advantage of the situation.

You're letting your personal feelings and fears over ride and poison Kot's view of the world. Why the fuck should she be afraid of them? She killed a dragon and could kick all their asses. You're not roleplaying at all.
>>
>>42932715
>Why the fuck should she be afraid of them?
Well, there is the QM's statement and previous IC thoughts of Kotijah that she's afraid of getting drugged and raped. You can punch a dragon in the face, you can't punch a drug, and she's not the most perceptive, so she could miss someone putting something in her drink.

Accusing someone else of not roleplaying just because they aren't doing what you want isn't a good strategy if you're actually trying to persuade someone.
>>
Well we need a deciding vote to move forwards, and since this seems like a discussion over the nature of our protagonist, I'm gonna let it be decided by who makes more sense to me.

Present your best in-character reasons for the choice you want most.
>>
>>42932765
Or she could just drink sparingly and make sure no one gets near her drink. She's proven remarkably resistant to drugs and even without her draconic vigor is pretty strong and tough. You keep beating that drugged and raped bit over my head, but that was when she knew nothing at all of the religion. Otherwise why the fuck would she have tried to recruit Fiona and then leave her there. Because it's not as bad as that by a long shot.
>>
>>42932818
1. She wants to have fun and cut loose at the party, leaving when the party proper has just started is not smart.
2. Both Gil and Kat have been through it and are not raging hedonists at night, just normal horny teenagers. So odds are besides the religious approval the party isn't going to be too different.
3. We were scared before due to our weakness and lack of knowledge. We killed a bloody dragon without all of our power. We could lick anyone in this town.
4. If they do decide to be idiots and try to drug us, we've proven remarkably resistant to drugs. Furthermore we won't be so blind as to leave a drink unattended or take it from someone we don't know.
5. We tried to recruit Fiona and then left her at her studies for a reason. It may get wild but it's not near as bad as could be believed. If it was the religion would have gotten banned.
>>
>>42932828
>Or she could just drink sparingly and make sure no one gets near her drink
She can try, but it's a party, odds that she can keep her eye on her drink at all times and still have a point in attending aren't too great. Although I guess we could always just throw out any drink whenever we leave it unattended (to dance or some such).

>She's proven remarkably resistant to drugs
By which you mean resisting a mild contact sedative?

>without her draconic vigor is pretty strong and tough
Most kinds of drug you'd use for date-rape don't care about that.

>You keep beating that drugged and raped bit over my head, but that was when she knew nothing at all of the religion.
We still don't know a whole lot about that religion or what goes on, and I tend to assume the worst about threats to one's person.

>Otherwise why the fuck would she have tried to recruit Fiona and then leave her there.
Because people wanted a cultist and didn't really care about her on a personal level, because people were afraid of /u/ (that one faggot was still around back then, IIRC), because they didn't like her or her religion and wanted to shove it in a corner to forget about.

>Because it's not as bad as that by a long shot.
I still haven't been able to see anything that proves that.

>>42932921
>Relying on the religion getting banned if it was actually bad when we've already seen that the nobles are nigh-universally decadent, corrupt bastards

If rape and drugging were that prevalent there would be mass revolts and the common people would hate, vilify and hunt it.

Mild, right. You mean something that'd make us pliable and highly suggestible is mild.

>You mean something that'd make us pliable and highly suggestible is mild.
We managed to spot and resist it's effect with a pretty mediocre roll, so yes. Save DC tends to play a greater part in the severity of a poison than it's detailed effects.

>Magic anon, we can resist Blight to an extent, that's a pretty potent poison.
I'm not sure why you'd assume that blight resistance applies to poison when they're almost completely different mediums. It would be a magical resistance to something affecting our soul anyway, and resisting that doesn't make you immune to mundane threats to your body.

>meta-whining
Fine, replace applicable instances of "I" with "Kotijah," it equates to the same thing. Kotijah hasn't seen anything that proves it isn't the worst, Kotijah might not have cared about Fiona on a personal level, Kotijah could (should, after all the bullshit that's been happening, really) have a paranoid streak and assume the worst about threat's to her person.

We have innate draconic hardiness which affect everything in us. Poison included.

You decide that locating Gil and Kat is your best bet at staying afloat in this situation, and you decide to head for the vendors to start your pursuit, the sun nearing the horizon bit by bit. It doesn't take you too long to find a trail of multicolored smoke in the direction the shopkeepers are saying the woman with cat ears was heading, and you find them admiring some sculptures. Kat's pipe has been replaced, or upgraded, and the bowl now looks like the head of a roaring dragon. There are little wings along the body, and every time she legs it go the wings start flapping and it hovers in place. Gil has an eyepatch again, but this one seems to serve a purpose, with little glass lenses on it, likely for sniping targets from further away. You wave as you draw near, but neither of them notice, so you call out to them, and Gil waves you over.

“Kotijah, hey! How'd the games go?”

You smile proudly.

“You are looking at an expert at dart toss and hammer swinging. Also there were some surprises.”

Gil nods a bit.

“Did it have anything to do with the lightning bolts? Because if it did, Kat owes me two gold.”

Kat huffs a little.

“Well now we have to assume every little weird thing has to do with her. I was trying to be nice.”

Gil holds out his hand and Kat passes him the coins, pouting at you.

“Why do you have to be such a weirdo...”

You roll your eyes and chuckle.

“This coming from the girl who burned down her own shop at the mere mention of a road trip.”

Kat's ears droop a bit, before perking up.

“And I haven't had a reason to go back in ages, so there! Justification!”

Gil sighs softly and smiles.

“Look, the party is about to start in full swing, can we get away from the vendors and move to the main area? They said they were going to roll out huge casks of drink for everyone to enjoy, and there's going to be music all night long. We only have a few minutes before the sun sets.”

Kat nods and smiles.

“If only Fiona were here... She still owes me a-”
