You are Commander Sonali Vasusena, N7 and Humanity’s Newest Spectre. It’s February 4th, 2184 and after being appointed Spectre, holding a press conference, hiring some mercs, selecting a ship, checking in at the Spectre Offices, and going shopping you’re… still shopping.

Hey, Lady’s Prerogative.
_

The 25K you invested in Expat’s Portfolio should go a long way to helping you out, but in the immediate future, you’re going to need some more useful supplies. Which is why you’ve stopped off a dingy little stall in the lower levels of Zakera Ward. The lighting here is darker, and in shades of darker red and blue. The atmosphere is different, slightly more active and dangerous but nowhere near the levels of Omega or some of the other pirate havens you’ve had the pleasure of visiting in your long career, but the difference is noticeable when compared to the normal areas of the Citadel.

The stall you stop at is tucked away behind a noodle stand and manned by a nervous looking salarian. He’s fiddling with his Omni-tool with his back facing the counter and jumps when you clear your throat.

“Yes? Can I help you?” He asks you as he turns around, wiping his rather scaly forehead as he does.

The Salarian brightens up and smiles, “Ah, yes! Spectre Vasusena, I had a feeling you might be coming by today. Just a Moment.”

He fiddles with his Omni-tool again pulling up variety of menus before sliding something over to his messaging app. Almost immediately, your own Omni-Tool beeps and shows that you’ve received a message from Morlan. The subject line says “YOUR 2 SMALL!” The text within seems to advertise a drug for increasing the size of male genitalia.

You give the Salarian a look of disgust, and he sighs. “It’s not what it looks like. Open the program that’s attached and drag the message into it.”

You do so and it immediately begins decrypting the hidden code that you didn’t even know was in the message. Immediately a list of wares pops up.

Its just 1 more slot over what we currently have. Plus shouldn't reliability take precedence over "fun"? It won't be fun when your team gets slaughtered because your omnitool crsshed and failed to lift a security lock down

Don't have to use it in live fire scenarios, we can test it out on our down time, put it through it's paces on a abandoned raider/pirate base before we go ahead and use it, and if nothing else we can turn it over to the Alliance R&D division to see what they can make of it, moght open up better gear that way.

You mull over the Decker for a minute. Hahne-Kedar makes some damn good armor but they just started branching into O-Tools. Still, that expanded Module Capacity without too many downsides is really tempting. Having more options in combat would be damn useful, provided that the Tool doesn’t turn out to be a glitchy mess.

Of course, you could just ask Leo or Cath what they think about the Tool. You look over your shoulder to see Leo sitting at the Noodle stand and digging into a giant bowl of Ramen. Sighing, you walk over to him and show him the specs of the Decker and ask his opinion.

Taking a moment to slurp up some of his noodles, he swallows and gives his approval, “Haven’t heard much about it, but the only O-Tools with expanded Module capacity are pretty pricy. I’d get it if I were you.”

Thanking him, you take a moment to shoot Cath a message and ask her what she thinks. Her response states that it’s a popular model with Tech Mercs since it’s not shit and has expanded Capacity. That’s all it really does though, but that’s still a really good thing. You thank her as well and proceed to buy the tool.

“Excellent!” Morlan says. “Your purchase will be delivered to your ship in a few hours. Is that all?”

You look over the list again. The Disruptor Ammo is looking pretty enticing…

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. You purchase the Disruptor Ammo and have it delivered to your ship as well. Bidding Morlan goodbye, you decide to get started on recruiting an able Crew. Sitting down on the stool next to Leo’s you pull up your Omni-Tool again. The Message from Udina on your current Crew states that it’s running on a Skeleton Crew. At the Moment, you need a Navigator, Three More Bridge Officers, Three more Engineers, and a Gunnery Officer to be considered Combat Ready.

The Marine Complement is rather Superfluous but it doesn’t hurt to have some backup every once in awhile and the Quartermaster is really there to manage ship affairs that are too minor to bother the CO and XO with. Of course, your new hirelings can fill in some of those spots. Jaro does have Gunnery Training after all and Cath can fill a bunch of roles. The Alliance already has some people lined up for all of those slots.

Looking at the list of spots you have left to fill, you decide that interviewing everyone for each position isn’t a great idea. A Navigator is generally someone you want to vet yourself, since they’ll be serving as Third in Command while you and Leo are groundside and if you get a Marine Detail you’ll want to make sure the Commander is up to snuff but everyone else shouldn’t be too much of an Issue. Although, you’ll want to specify that you’ll be providing your own crew for some positions, if you decide to.

You decide to assign Cath to the Quartermaster post and have Jaro serve as Gunnery Officer. Out of the Navigators, you’re drawn to Robert Guilford for his vast experience and knowledge. It looks like he’ll be invaluable in lots of areas. As for your Marine Detail Commander, you were a bit torn between Sergeant Major Kostov and Captain Coates but eventually you settle for the Captain, deciding that Experience would always be useful. You send a Message to Udina to let him know to fill in the rest of the spots on your crew.

Closing your Omni-tool, you glance at Leo and see that he’s almost done with his giant bowl of Ramen. It’s then that your Omni-tool beeps, signifying a new message.

Checking it, you find that there’s no name in the sender field. The message’s contents read “Hello Commander, I’d like to Congratulate you on your promotion and your inauguration. You’ve made Humanity very Proud. I hope that you’ll continue to do so. To that end, there’s a man in a brown coat sitting at the Sushi Stand across the street. If you could have a small chat with him, alone, I’d be very obliged. Signed, An Apparition.”

You surreptitiously sneak a glance behind you, and see the man mentioned sitting at one of the stools of the sushi place, taking a bite of a Rainbow roll.

“Leo,” you whisper urgently, as you prop your arms up on the table and rest your head in your hands. “Unknown at 5.”

Your LT continues eating but gives you all his attention, judging from his body language, “Copy. Orders?”

“Going to talk,” You murmur. “Cover me.”

“Gotcha.”

You hop off your stool and saunter through the crowd towards the sushi bar, years of experience letting you move with absolute ease and calm. Sliding onto the new stool next to the new man, you look him over quickly and memorize his features. He’s middle-aged with brown hair, brown eyes, a receding hairline and a well kept beard. He doesn’t acknowledge you and takes another bite from his sushi platter.

"You have 20 seconds to explain who you are and what you want,” You mutter darkly.

“The name is Bennett Webster,” the man says in a rather smooth voice. “And, I personally would like to finish my meal, but my boss had a different plan in mind.”

He takes another bite of a salmon roll, “My employer wants to extend a... partnership towards you. One where all parties benefit.”

Webster takes a sip from his glass of water, before resuming talking. “The idea is simple. We give you a job, you complete it, you get paid, in credits, intel, resources, whatever you might need.”

“Sound fair?”

Webster hmphs before resuming talking, “You’re really going to stick to your guns there huh? That’s admirable.” He sounds almost wistful.

“I will not tie myself, or my crew, to someone who can not operate outside of the shadows,” You say plainly, turning to face him and pinning him with a glare. “Who is your employer?”

The man grimaces, “I’d tell you, if I wasn’t worried about living to see my kids again. You’re a good person Commander and I’d hate to see you die in the line of duty. Too many Heroes go out that way before they can really make a difference in the Galaxy. I want to help you out, give you a little edge to help you do your job. Thanks for the offer,” You say as you stand up. “But I’ll decline.”

Webster nods, “I figured. Good luck out there Commander. God knows you’ll need it.”

You walk back to Leo, mulling the circumstances of the meeting. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth, this underhanded deal. Do other Spectres do this? After all, you’re supposed to be independant and collect your own resources. This seems like an easy way to get funding, but it’s an easy way to lose your path. You want to actually help make this Galaxy a better place.

“So,” Leo asks, an empty bowl sitting in front of him. “What was that about?”

You quickly explain the gist of the situation and note how your XO’s expression darkens.

“I’m glad you didn’t take him up on the offer,” Leo approves. “But it’s worrying that they even tried. Any idea who they are?”

“Not the Shadow Broker and not another Spectre,” You answer. “So that narrows it down.”

Leo snorts, “There’s a dozen factions that would pull shit like this, on both sides of the Law. I’m just happy you kept your hands clean.” He gives you a genuine smile.

“Anyways, where to next, Commander?”

Stepping aboard the Nakshatra feels… odd. Like you’re stepping into something momentous. Important. It’s YOUR ship. It’s YOUR command. The soft VI voice and the hissing of the decontaminant sprayers are ignored in favor of the gentle hum and deep creaks of the Nakshatra herself. Ships are alive, you know this to be true. She has a soul, but it’s not awakened until the Captain steps aboard. You may not be a Captain in Rank, but you’re still her Captain in Soul. And now that you’re here, she’s waking up.

You shake your head, stumbling out of your revery and through the inner airlock doors, Leo right behind you. At a first glance, you’d swear that you’d stepped back onto the Trenton. The bridge layout is nearly identical, with the cockpit to your left and the main Holoprojector to your right. None of the console seats in the bridge are occupied. In fact, there’s not a single crewmember in sight.

“Weird,” Leo murmurs as he looks around. “Where is everyone?”

You don’t respond, deigning to go find out for yourself. Walking past the Galaxy map, you pick up a faint murmur of conversation from the crew quarters. The doors open as you approach them, and you discover the whereabouts of your crew.

At the central table in the quarters, five figures sit. The tall, musclebound form of Jaro reclines in her chair, a lazy grin on her face and five playing cards in her hands. Next to her sits a young man in unbuttoned pilot fatigues, cards in one hands and a cigarette in the other. To his left, sits a woman with Asian features in a form fitting black jumpsuit and cards facedown on the table in front of her. On the far end, across from Jaro, sits a blonde woman in full Medic BDU and a rebreather mask. She holds no cards and glares pointedly at the smoking man. Last is Cath, who wears a jumpsuit, an orange holographic Dealer hat and a wide smile.

As soon as you enter the room, all the players freeze and turn to stare at you. The smoking man attempts to hide his cigarette under the table while the woman in the Medic BDU smiles and crosses her arms. She just radiates smug.

You raise an eyebrow at the pilot, “Smoking on ships is reserved for the Admiralty, you should know better.”

He gives a guilty laugh and flicks the, now snuffed, cigarette into the closest wastebin. “Sorry Commander,” he says with a slight accent. “Won’t happen again.”

“It better not,” the woman in the Medic BDU says as she pulls the rebreather mask off her face. “Such a dizgusting habit.” Her own accent is significantly more pronounced.

“Don’t knock it til you try it hun,” they Asian woman murmurs as her eyes stay locked on you.

“Hey Boss,” Jaro says with a sheepish smile. “How was your day?”

“Fine,” you say with a sigh as you sit down on Jaro’s right. “Now deal me in.”

All the players exchange glances before Cath shrugs and deals you five cards. Behind you, you can hear Leo snickering softly. He pulls up a chair and sits between you and Cath, a grin on his face.

“You not playing Spooks?” Jaro asks.

Leo’s smile just grows, “Nah, I’ll watch this one.”

There’s a sizable pile of credit chits in front of Jaro and a decent amount in front of the pilot and the Asian woman. With a small smirk of your own, you place 50 credits on the table and pick up your cards. Four, Seven, Nine, Jack and an Ace.

“Skyllian Five?” You ask as you look over your hand.

“Yep,” Cath answers. “Nines are Trump.” She points to the face up Nine in the middle of the table.

Good to know.

“So, how about Introductions?” You ask as you meet the minimum bet, Five. “I’m Commander Sonali Vasusena, Commanding Officer of the Nakshatra and a Spectre.”

“I’m Lieutenant Leonard Delamere,” Leo says from your right. “Ship’s XO.”

You and Leo look at Cath and everyone else follows your lead. “Oh, uh,” Cath blinks in surprise. “Catherine Valdez. Mercenary. Don’t really have a rank.”

“She’ll be the Nakshatra’s Quartermaster,” You add.

Cath murmurs, “So that’s how it is.”

The next person in the circle is the woman in the BDU who appears to be stunned and staring at you. Upon seeing everyone staring at her, she blinks in surprise before speaking.

“I am Lieutenant Commander Artesia Delacroix,” she says in a less pronounced French accent. “Ship’s Doctor. Commander, must you really-”

“Hey, my turn!” The Asian woman interrupts. “Ensign Ai Shan, Chief Engineer. Pleased to meet you!” She’s awfully chipper.

All eyes turn to the other man at the table, who smiles slightly, “Flight Lieutenant Johann Rask, Helmsman. At your service.” That’s a Dutch accent, you think.

Finally, it’s Jaro’s turn. “Jaroslava Vlcek, also a Mercenary.” She says with a grin.

“She’ll also be serving as our Gunnery Officer,” You finish.

“Oh goodie,” Jaro deadpans.

“Sure you can handle that cannon all by yourself Jaro?” Cath asks teasingly.

“Please,” Jaro scoffs. “I’ve handled bigger. You’ve seen me handle bigger. Hell, you probably have bigger ones hidden in that rat’s nest you call a room.”

It goes back and forth for a little while, the teasing staying good-natured. It’s enough to break the ice and soon enough, everyone is laughing and a little bit relaxed.

“Let’s get better acquainted with each other,” Johann says as he drops two cards and takes the two Cath hands to him. “Where’d everyone serve? I was stationed in the Hawking’s Trident Squadrons right out of the Academy and this is the first time they assigned me to anything bigger than a Kodiak. It’s pretty amazing.”

“Well,” Jaro says from behind her cards, “I was with a Mercenary outfit called Manticore a couple of years ago. Fought in a bunch of places in the Terminus. Cath was there with me.”

Cath nods as she hands Ai an entirely new hand, “Yeah, I was in Manticore. Did a bunch of odd jobs before that. Did a tour with the 9th Frontier way back when but I left right after it ended.”

Artesia leans forward onto the table, staring at the pile of chits, “Alliance paid for my education and I did well enough in Officer School. They decided I was Ship’s Doctor Material and had me study under the Cairo’s staff.”

Ai inspects her hand as she speaks, “I did stints on the Amsterdam and Munich for a few years while studying for Officer’s Certification. Got it last month and then they transferred me to this beauty.”

Leo speaks up from your right as he inspects the deck, “I served with the 7th Frontier for a few years before I was invited to the N-Program. Did well for myself there, made it to N7 status and did a bunch of missions all on my lonesome before I was assigned to the Commander’s team.”

All eyes turn to you, and you’re left wondering how to present your own history.
