Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. The world slowly smoldered as the Air Nomads were eradicated by the Fire Nation, leaving nothing but empty homes in their wake. The Fire Nation has already started a full-scale campaign on the Southern Water Tribe, beginning the cycle of death anew.

Fifty years this war has raged, scorching the forests and destroying lives. Many have died and all hope of the Avatar's return has been extinguished, but life goes on. The walls of Ba Sing Se, Omashu, and the Northern Water Tribe have held the Fire Nation at bay, seemingly nothing can penetrate them. As always, there is also solace in wandering.

But this isn't a story about the Avatar, or a king, or even a hero, this is the story of Kuo, a wandering Firebender.

"WWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAKE UP LLLLLLAAAAAAAAADIES AND GENTLEMEN!"

You jolt awake and slam your head against the top of the bunk. You see Cado do the same and Jui jumps out of the top bunk only to crash headfirst into the floor. You hear Mae groan and roll over, only to see him fly past your face a moment later and collide with a loud thud on the floor. Cado begins cursing up a storm as Jui groans on the floor, all while Mae continues snoring.

"Thank you Baamo, Your volume is always appreciated." Kim Man is standing behind the rather small announcer.

"THAAAAAAANK YOU BOOOOOOOSS!" You swear, that man doesn't know the meaning of the word quiet.

"I always wanted to do that, carry on." Kim laughs and exits your room. He may pay you a lot, but that guy is definitely crazy. Mae's head jolts up and he looks around with a confused look on his face.

"What happened?"

"Nothing, I'm going to go practice a trick I've been working on at the training room. I want it to be a surprise, nobody go in there until I leave." Cado seems a little disgruntled at the fact he woke up early on his day off, and he walks off.

"I'm going to go see a play, it's been a while since I did something other than work." Jui sheepishly walks around the corner.

"Well, if you guys aren't going to tell me what happened, I'm going to go do some shopping. I need a souvenier for my little sister." Mae gets up off the floor and begins collecting his coin purse.

You haven't really considered what you want to do today.

"Hey Mae, let's go together, I saw something last time I went out I want to buy." You grab your coin purse and walking stick, put on your normal clothes, and head out the door with Mae. You walk around the town a bit, casually discussing where your travels have taken you.

"Really? You went to the Si Wong Desert and hitched a ride with some sandbenders? Jui doesn't normally talk about where he comes from, but I always wanted to go there."

"Well, to be honest I wasn't entirely lucid for all of it. I saw some interesting animals though, but they aren't exactly friendly." You kind of chuckle, remembering the time you were convinced you were toast after drinking from a plant.

You eventually reach a row of stands and carts, each peddling their wares. The one that immediately catches your attention is a cart labelled "Artifacts of the Past". It seems to be well kept and rather large, pulled by a Dragon-Moose, and a large man in strange clothing is beckoning people in. He seems to be holding a small device that he pulls a string on, and it goes twirling through the air.

A few fruit stalls down, another shop catches your attention, if only because you recognize it, "Antique Scrolls and Books". The same old man is sitting in an ornate chair out front, seeming rather happy and playing a small flute. He also notices you and smiles a warm, familial, smile your way. The song he plays is filled with vigor and joy, peaking in happy crescendos.

Your eyes eventually wander to another cart, but this one is less large or well kept than the other. It says on the side, "Chogom's Imported Teas and Brewing Accessories" and a waft of strong, fruity, tea tickles your nostrils. The one thing that seals the deal is two old men at a Pai-Sho table out front sipping tea and playing a rather prolonged game.

Mae starts over to the man with the weird toy.

You decide that watching some actual pros play Pai-Sho might help you learn more on how to play. So you walk over to the Pai-Sho table and start watching the game. These two have obviously been playing for a while, half of the moves they make are things you only barely read about, and they don't exactly play at a slow pace. Eventually, the man in the cart yells at you.

"No loitering, buy something or leave!"

One of the old men pipes up, "Chogom, let the kid stay and watch, it's so hard to find young people who actually enjoy Pai-Sho. I'm almost done with Akem anyway." He then masterfully places a piece that locks in Akem's last piece and leaves no spots open. He won.

"Eh, you cheat anyway Par. Here's your gold, I'm cutting my losses and leaving. Kid, you are definitely going to lose." Akem seems to be rather upset about losing.

Par looks at you with a glimmer in his eye, "Akem will never admit it, he's just not good at Pai-Sho, I mean, he knows the moves but he doesn't make good decisions. Don't worry, I don't play for money with strangers. I'm Par by the way." He holds out his hand.

"I'm Kuo, nice to meet you." You shake his hand and take a seat.

You walk over to the cart and buy the tea of the day, a rather fruity tea with just a bit of tang, and tip the shopkeeper. The tea is an explosion of flavor in your mouth, instantly invigorating you, then relaxing you. You then buy a small bag of the mix.

"I call that mix Calm Tornado, grown from tea leaves collected around the Southern Air Temple, and then mixed with a hint of firecurrants and steeped for two minutes. It's good, yes?" Chogom seems to instantly lighten up when you take a sip. He speaks with an enthusiasm you wouldn't expect after his previous outburst.

You nod and head back to Par, who calmly says you can go first, so you set your first piece and begin.

A few hours go by and you have been stringing Par along for the past 20 moves, he seems to overlook the fact that your Earth tile is still unused. He places a piece and seems to be grinning in glee, obviously anticipating a win.

"Well Kuo, that was a good game, but I think you might want to save us some time and forfeit. It was actually rather impressive for a first game." He leans back on his chair.

"You want to know what's even more impressive Par? I just beat you on my first game." You place your Earth tile and it successfully locks in all his pieces, guaranteeing your victory. Par falls over in shock.

"Very clever Kuo, I didn't expect that. I have to go though, thanks for the game." Par picks up his pieces and pays for his tea, then walks off. Mae walks up behind you.

"When did you get so good at Pai-Sho, or at least I think you are, I can't get my head around it."

"I read a book." You start packing up your pieces when you realize a black envelope with the white lotus symbol is resting on the table. You put it in with your pieces and put them in your bag.

You and Mae walk over to the Artifacts shop, and are immediately accosted by the merchant out front.

"Hello young man, you look like you could use something to light fires, and boy so I have something for you. Earth Kingdom Spark Rocks! They can start your fireplace in seconds flat." You walk past him and start looking around his cart. One thing that catches your attention is a small bone flute, but it plays from the top and has holes on the front. You give it a quick blow and are frightened by the horrid noise it makes. It sounds like a small child screaming in pain.

Putting that away rather quickly, you find a small bottle of extremely blue, almost shimmering, water. It flows weirdly when you turn the bottle and you swear it makes a kind of low humming noise. If you weren't worried about breaking something, you would probably give it a sniff, but the bottle is corked with a tag saying, "Fog-Water".

A small, familiar whistle on display catches your attention, the same one from the Scroll shop. It says "Authentic Wind Buffalo Whistle - 5 gold". Your mind finally connects the dots between the old man having a new ornate chair and the whistle being here. This feels like cheating.

Finally, in the back corner, tucked in between books, you find an elaborately carved ivory pipe. It has a carved dragon wrapped around it and it feels like it would be an adequate replacement for the old wooden one you have now.

You pick up the ivory pipe and the whistle to the merchant and slam down 4 gold, the merchant looks at you pensively. He looks at what you plan on buying and takes out a small device with beads on it, then starts sliding them back and forth repeatedly. He does this for a while, then starts nodding and puts away the device.

"That all checks out, what you bought totals up to 4, you gave me 4.2, thank you for the tip." He says, his eyes slightly wandering away from you and his jaw slightly dropping. Something tells you that this man is not exactly... right. But you aren't going to correct him.

"Uh, thank you."

"Nesing's going to be so proud of me!" The man clutches the gold with glee. You feel really bad about this, so you hand him another gold piece.

"You did the math wrong, but thanks for trying, here's one extra." This guy must not run the shop, and even if the whistle is robbery, you can't in good conscience do this to him entirely.

You grab the items and walk out of the cart, noticing a nametag on the Dragon-Moose that says "Candy".

You decide to pop over to the book stall and see what the old guy has that might be interesting. You've been thinking about using waterbending movements in conjunction with Firebending. A scroll that actually shows you how to do it would be useful. The old man smiles and nods at you.

You look through the various shelves and spend a lot more time than you thought looking for anything interesting. The first thing you come up wih is a scroll case that seems to be made out of Tiger-Seal skin, supposedly waterproof and very stylish looking. It could probably hold about two scrolls without having to cram them in.

The next thing you find is a book entitled, "The Relation of the Moon to the Sun in Terms of Firebending and a Treatise on the Theory of Dynamic Benders". From what you can understand, it only touches briefly on any actual bending, instead focusing on astrology. On the back cover is the name "Ember Fire", almost certainly a pen name.

Then you find something that might actually be helpful, if it were intact. A scrap of a waterbending scroll, the rest burnt away, that shows a single picture of a Watervender stretching. Entirely underwhelming.

Finally, you dig further through the shelves and find a single thing that could be useful, a book simply labelled "Fire and Water". After reading through it though, it quickly becomes apparent that this book is a very old romance novel. When framed in the context of the war, it becomes very politically incorrect and you can see why it was at the bottom of the pile.

Nah, not a waste in this universe. Heavenly bodies have important effects on bender's powers and possibly more subtle effects than what is touched on in the shows, which I would love to see explored more
>>
>>42895355
I wonder what effects air and earth benders. The comet and sun give fire benders a power up, and the moon helps waterbenders.
>>
>>42895410

I would guess they would be the more subtle effects and probably related to the planets, something that might not even be able to be utilized by someone not familiar with it, on the positive side though they don't get screwed like fire and water benders do every once in a while
>>
You decide the scroll case would be a very good idea in case of an emergency and is probably better to keep the Airbending scroll in than its original case. Not to even mention how convenient it is for your map. Then you pick up "The Relation of the Moon to the Sun in Terms of Firebending and a Treatise on the Theory of Dynamic Benders" and decide that you might be able to puzzle out its meaning in time.

"I was hoping you'd pick up that case for that antique you bought, it would be such a shame to see it go to waste. I didn't peg you for an intellectual though, that book is infamous for being one of the most obscuring texts in recent history, but I heard if you get it that it has a really good point." The old man takes a small tag off of the book and case, then hands them to you.

You hand him 7 gold and head out of his canopy with some new reading material. Your reading list is starting to fill up, might be something to get around to some time. You look around for Mae and see him trying out a rather odd looking fruit at a stall. He has a look of apprehension on his face. You walk over to him and he waves at you.

"Hey Kuo, was trying out this new fruit this guy got. Calls it a Firemelon." He leans over at you conspiratorialy, "It tastes like mudclams, let's go." Mae begins heading off for the house.

Alright, so I was the poster above who put oout the ideas of the planets having an effect on the Air and Earth benders. My guess would be that the only planets near enough would be the closest ones, Mars and Venus (assuming their solar system is not!Earth based and they probably have different names). Venus has some string winds constantly whipping across it's surface. Mars is almost entirely devoted element wise to earth, lacking much water and atmosphere (though of course still present).

As far as the actual effect on the benders here I would say that, like our Astrology, their position in the sky would effect talent in benders born during certain times and their affinities to certain techniques. An Airbender born during a time when not!Venus is prominent would have difficulty controlling their talent but would be able to summon powerful blasts and gales far easier.
>>

the sky is blue except when it isn't
>>
>>42896217
That... actually is very helpful and would explain a very integral part to Kuo's story in a way you might be able to understand. I might implement that.
>>
"Mae, I'm going to walk around a bit more, you go ahead."

"Sure thing Kuo." You begin your standard practice of walking around a bit to find a nice restaurant or inn. You walk around the town for an hour before you reach a small, cozy inn with a sign advertising their sushi. You figure that eating fish would be a welcome change from being eaten by it. When you open the door, you are greeted by a kind old lady who guides you to a table and hands you a small page of options. They all basically amount to what you want, so you order the chef's special, only 25 silver pieces and it comes with complementary sake. You don't know why the sake would be complementary, but that's fine.

You take the black envelope out of your bag and look it over, completely featureless but the symbol on the front. You open the envelope and you can smell jasmine as you remove a plain looking letter.

"Dear Kuo,

You have been selected to join a prestigous club of Pai-Sho enthusiasts known as the Order of the White Lotus. Our order is devoted to intellectual discourse, learning, and a zeal towards life. Pai-Sho is not merely a game, it is a reflection of the forward-thinking ability of a man, and you have shown great promise after not only managing to emulate our secret code, but also beating Master Par. If you wish to devote your life to the quest for truth, please go to the Warm Earth Inn at Ba Sing Se. I know that is a large distance from the Fire Nation, but I have been informed that you take pride in your ability to travel. If you have no desire to apply, please burn this letter promptly.

Seek the truth while it may be found,
Grand Lotus Han Wu"

This... is a lot to process.

You set to memorizing the letter down to the word, it takes you about an hour, but you get it. Then you crumple the envelope and letter in your fist and it glows a luminous white color as it burns. The air distinctly smells of jasmine now, and then it quickly blows out the open window behind you. You finish up your sushi and sake, thanking the innkeeper, and walk out into the streets. The sun beats down on the stone street as you walk back to the house, noticing a great amount of flyers advertising the Dragon Festival tonight.

The house slowly comes into view and you walk in, toting your new pipe and scroll case, the whistle in your bag with the book and tea. You walk into your room and find Jui sitting at his bunk. You swear you hear a sniffle as you walk in but you can't tell where from.

"Hey Kuo, how was shopping?"

"Got some reading material, how was the play?"

"It was great Kuo, absolutely amazing."

"I need to talk to Kim about something. I'll be back soon."

"Okay Kuo. I will just continue being... manly and stable in my room." You walk out of the room and slowly trudge to Kim's office, walking past Utaaq who puts away a book that looks vaguely familiar. You finally reach Kim's door and knock. The door opens and you see Kim sitting at his desk. Sleeping.

"Kim. It's Kuo, wake up." The old man bolts awake and he looks directly at you.

"After Ember Island, we go to a small colony in The Earth Kingdom for charity. I'll waive the fee on exiting the contract if you leave there and stay for Ember Island."

"Uh... how did you?"

"I have drank an entire bottle of Fog-Water, asshole at the shop said it was good for migraines. He was right, but now I think I'm on fire and I can see the future." Kim then collapses into sleep again, face down on his desk. You call out for Utaaq.

Well, that was easier than expected.

You walk out to Utaaq, you need to talk to her about something very important, as it concerns the fact that a spirit is hitchhiking in your body. He mentioned something about being imprisoned there, maybe he would be willing to leave peacefully. Okay, no, he seems pretty confrontational.

"Hey, Utaaq..." She tosses a book in the air in a jolt of motion, then quickly grabs it and puts it in her bag.

"By Tui and La, Kuo, would it kill you to knock?"

"I'm sorry, I just wanted to talk to you about something." You tell her everything you know about your situation as she sits there nodding and making notes. Occasionally she asks a question and you answer truthfully to each one.

"I have only ever heard of this happening once before, in the Northern Water Tribe. Two famed Waterbenders had a baby, or so the story goes, who was stillborn. Moving quickly, they brought him to the Spirit Oasis and he was healed. That child grew to become the definitive Waterbender of his era, but he allegedly left right after stopping a crisis in the tribe. Some stories say he walked the earth, helping all he came across, others say he became a dissheveled hermit, babbling to himself until he died. But the one thing that we have agreed, is he held an immense bond to the Spirit World."

"But that's all I know, not much when you think about it. I don't think I can help you with this, just try not to upset the spirit I guess." Utaaq waves you out of her room and closes the door behind you.

You need to talk to that spirit now, you need to figure out what to do and it might be your only chance. You quickly go to your room and find that Jui isn't there, perfect. You get down into a neutral position and start focusing on yourself. You feel the temperature rise and your body burn away, leaving only your spirit facing Vorlash in the black void.

"WHY DO YOU BESEECH ME ANNOYING MORTAL?" The fire ferret walks up to you and looks at you inquisitively. The spirit would be cute if it didn't have a volume problem.

"Why are you here? You mentioned a trade before." You remember the spirit referring to somebody named Terba and a debt.

"I WAS BOUND TO YOU AS PART OF A TRADE WITH TERBA, THE INTERMEDIATE SPIRIT, TERBA TRADES FAVORS AND I WAS IN DEBT."

"What was a spirit in debt for?"

"BEGONE FROM MY DOMAIN!" You feel the void recede and the temperature lower, the room coming into sharp focus once more.

This isn't going to be easy.
