Previously, you and Hiss both showed off new tricks. Neither of them ended up happy about it.

“And forward!”

You groan, struggling to see properly as sweat drips into your eyes. Your whole body aches, exertion and injury taking its toll. It’s all you can do to focus on the sword on your hands...and the opponent in front of you.

If Oster is feeling tired yet, he sure isn’t showing it. Maybe he’s breathing a little harder but that’s it. He prowls towards you without a care in the world, keeping his feet exactly where they need to be. He makes it look easy. He could probably just walk over and kill you right now if he wanted to but that’s not what he’s here to do. He’s waiting for your next attack.
“Come on Cennen, don’t be a wuss. Just show me you’ve got it in you.”

You’re not sure what intangible quality he’s searching for and you’re way too fucked up to even care about it right now.

Make like we're just waving mindlesly, dodge when he counters and attack him before he can recover.
Try not to fail miserably.
>>
> Pretend to be too tired to continue and then attack him.

You know you're not going to be able to get past him properly, he's too good. In the terms of this fight, it's more or less impossible for you to win.
Maybe it's time to change the terms.

You just need to pretend to be tired. Luckily it won't take much pretending, you're already mostly there.
You make a hopeless thrust forward, one that barely goes anywhere in an attempt to make him think that that was it, that that was the best attack you could manage.

And he takes the bait. He steps forward, pushing his own sword forward. It's slow but assured, as fast as it needs to be with your own sword-arm hopelessly out of place.

You step to the side just in time with speed out of place with your apparent exertion. Your sword, still extended, can now be swung sideways at his chest!
Not that you can swing it very fast, mind you, it's an awkward position. But you only need to tap him.

But Oster sees it coming and he doesn't retreat. Instead he steps closer, bringing himself up close and inside the circle of your natural reach. It's almost impossible for either of you to hit each other with your swords up this close, not without having to pull your arms back. While he's still bringing his misaimed sword back, he tries to grab your collar with his free hand.

You flounder backwards, stepping on his foot as you do so. And by doing so you avoid his grasp with relative ease. Which is great because if he grabbed hold of you you're not sure if you'd ever be able to break his grip.

And as you step back, you drag your blunt sword into his side.

Oster stops, his own sword frozen in the motion of being pulled back to impale you. He shrugs, dropping it.
"Well, there it is. Took your time."

This was it, your first time. The first time you'd ever landed a hit on him. You'd be happy if you weren't so fucking exhausted.

>Cennen loses Basic Swordsmanship and gains Standard Swordsmanship! While a Basic Swordsman can never do anything to someone like Oster, a Standard Swordsman can gain the upper hand through luck or treachery.

"About time," you pant.

Oster takes in your pale demeanor and frowns.
"You alright?"

"Yeah, yeah, just give me a moment to catch my breath. ...Shouldn't it be me asking YOU that?"

"Nah. I'm always alright."

Oster passes you a collection of restoration potions from your own pack, neglecting one for himself.
"You're free to rest up, I think we're done for now."

You pump your fist in belated celebration.
"Thanks. I did pretty good, didn't I?"

Oster waves his hand in a non-committal fashion.
"I'd say you're...alright. Strictly alright. You know how to use a sword properly now at least."

"Yay."

You drink deep, letting the potion circulate through your system. You let out your breath and sit down as it does so, your sword by your leg.

"Mind if I join you?"
Oster sits down next to you without waiting for your permission.

"No, go ahead."

All of them
>>
>Basically everything

You have an idea that you’re not sure how to raise, one that regards the Mindbalm you created recently. You know Oster is damaged and you know that to some extent that he is fully aware of that. Aware and seemingly at peace with it. But you don’t like it. And you don’t like how complicit you feel to it happening. But how best to go about it?

“So uh, how’s Aashenpreet going? I know she spends a lot of time with you.”
Maybe you can just start talking and eventually ease into it?

Oster chuckles, a sound made more for show than any real amusement.
“I don’t think she likes the Melach.”

“Yeah, we talked about that. They’re skeletons and that’s pretty fucked up but I thought she got over that.”

“No, not the skeleton bit. She’s looked past that and talked to them, tried not to judge them by that and see how they really are. And she doesn’t like who they are.”

“What did they do?”
Oh shit. Did they find out about her similarity to Hiss?

“Oh, they haven’t done ANYTHING to her. Most of them ignore her. But she hates their way of doing things, their culture. And especially their religion. Really seems to offend her or something.”

You struggle to recall anything of the Melach’s beliefs besides a barely mentioned reference to ‘flensing halls’. You don’t really talk to any of them and they’re not exactly the proselytizing sort.
“She hasn’t done anything drastic, has she?”

“Not as far as I know. But she’s trying to ...convert them. Talk over the ones who know enough Avling to listen.”

Something uneasy settles into you gut.
“How is she managing that without bringing up what snakes are?”
She better not have…

“As far as I can tell? Poorly.”

You sigh, dropping your bottle in favour for another potion.
“I hope she does better when we’re back home. If she keeps on trying to talk about religion she might give us away or something.”

1/?
>>
>>42966637
“I might try to talk to her about. We’re nearly home, after all.”

“Yeah, finally.”
It’ll feel good to finally be back in Teleran, you decide. Back in a context you truly understand. But Teleran only raises a different issue.
“What the fuck are we going to do when we get back? Are we stopping at Taldenral?”

Oster thinks for a moment.
“We might. Taldenral is the best Teln port after all. But we’ll have to dismiss the Melach first, they’ll cause a scene. If we aim for a different port or just make land somewhere uninhabited we might be able to bring them along.”

“I’d prefer to stop in Taldenral, to be honest. It’d be nice to spend some time there when there isn’t a hundred things trying to kill us. I’m looking forward to meeting some familiar faces. We probably won’t be able to take the same route back though. Melire might be a problem.”

“From what I know, Melire will always be a problem. We’ll just avoid it and it should be right. And from there it’s just a short jaunt back to Snakehome.”

“You’re looking forward to that, I take it?”

Oster looks at you strangely.
“Of course I am. It’s home. Where else would I rather be?”

Something about his words bite you a little harsher than either of you anticipated. Do you have a home? You don’t remember feeling that way about any location. Not even your village, a place that you have far fewer memories of than you’d expect thanks to Hiss. You probably loved it before you met her. And now you only feel at home when you’re by her side.
“That makes sense, I guess. So Oster, what’s living in Snakehome like? Since I’ll be doing a lot of it soon.”

“Well, first of all you better get used to sleeping on rocks and eating raw meat. Lots of raw meat. And the snakes only bite you sometimes.”
He stops when he sees your expression and laughs.
(2/?)
>>
>>42966839
“I’m joking. Snakehome has a small human village within its borders, that’s where I and all the other servants live. A lot like yours, I imagine. We don’t have that many humans but there’s enough to keep the community going.”

“Is it like Quedesh? If you don’t mind me asking?”

“Nah, that’s fine. And no, not at all. Not all of us are direct servants. A lot of the village barely even see snakes, they just help gather food or whatnot.”

“And you’re all free?”

“What? No! Who would want that? Everyone in Snakehome is property.”

“You said that it was different! How is that good?”

“Cennen, you gotta stop being so naive. Slavery is just a label. Everyone is property in some way or another. If the humans in Snakehome we’re living somewhere else, they’d just belong to the Duke.”

“That’s different. All of those people are free to leave and do what they wish.”

“Not the ones who’ve signed contracts to care for and farm the land. And even if they are, it’s not like they could. They’d just run out of money and die if they didn’t. It’s an illusion of choice. Don’t you belong to the princess?”
“No, not really. I’m her servant but I’m not her property.”

“So you’re free to leave whenever you want?”

“Uh….”
Would you leave? And more importantly, do you think that the princess would LET you leave? She’d drag you back or hurt you.
“I’m sure that Hiss would let me leave if I wanted to.”

“You’re free to test that one mate but I wouldn’t advise it.”

You sigh. You’re not sure you like this outlook on life.
“Oster, are you happy like this? This all seems rather bleak.”

“Is it? I consider it the opposite. I’ve never met a human I could trust with ruling and human civilization as a rule, grows opulent and decays. At least this way I know where I belong. I’m content.”

“Is it? I consider it the opposite. I’ve never met a human I could trust with ruling and human civilization as a rule, grows opulent and decays. At least this way I know where I belong. It's pure and I’m content.”

“Mrm. Is being content and being happy the same thing? No offense Oster but you’re a mess. How much do you even remember of your own life?”

Something flits over Oster’s features but you’re not fast enough to see what it is.
“Enough. I remember enough to know my purpose in the NOW and that is all something like me needs.”

“But don’t you want to more? To be who you once were?”

“What’s this all about, Cennen?,” Oster snaps, irritation suddenly surging up from beyond his facade.
“What I want doesn’t matter here. It’s not like it can be fixed. So fuck off.”

Alright, here’s your chance. You root through your pack for the Mindbalm.
“But...what if it could be? I’ve made a brew that I think can help heal the soul. Help heal you.”

Oster stares at the small potion in your hands.
“Wh….Ugh. Why would you make this?”

You try to laugh it off but all you accomplish is sounding fake.
"I'm an alchemist, if I can make something I think I have to give it a try. Why wouldn't I make this?"

Oster shakes his head.
"Hiss wouldn't like you having this. She wouldn't like that you even learned how to make it."

"I'm absolutely sure she wouldn't mind. Now come on, do you want it or not? It won't return what you've lost but it can help you grow whole again."

He groans softly.
"Why the fuck do you do this to me? Can't you see I was happy?"

"Pardon?"

"I'm happy with what I am and what the princess has done to me. Because what's done is done and cannot be changed. So why the hell would you show me a way out? I don't want to know about this thing!"

"Then you're not REALLY happy, are you?"

"Not anymore! This isn't what the princess would want!"

We REALLY need dispel elixir, since Teleran has a lot of wardens, spirits, alchemists and snakes.
>>
>>42968617
Soul guise is an interesting brew. I wanna see what else we can do with the pseudo-soul substance we can make.
>>
>>42968574
Seems good. Soul might be our specialty but we shouldn't neglect increasing our versatility a bit.
>>
>>42968617
We already have magic shield brews which are more useful for defense against magic users
>>
>>42968497
> Experiment with the Soul Guise.
>>
>>42968662
Not really since it only lasts for 1 hit and a wizard can hit s repeatedly. This depowers them.

>>42968639
>Ignore imminent conflict for a sub power we may never use.
>>
>>42968704
I don't really think it depowers them
>>
Rolled 2 (1d6)

Well, it looks like a tie between Soul Guise and Dispel. Evens the former, odds the latter.
>>
>>42968737
Maybe if they drank it I guess
>>
>>42968737
It dispels all magic on them until the potion get's wiped away. Which means they have trouble casting and are distracted. Furthermore if we have it, we can easily create a dispel grenade without too much tinkering.
>>
>>42968765
Actually nevermind, I hit a miscount. Dispel it is.
>>
>>42968783
It would be nice to have. I don't foresee much magical conflict for a while though. We're going to Taldenral.
>>
>>42968786
It was a tie

>Most Alchemists in the world
>Several Wizards, at least one we know we didn't finish off properly
>Church can summon spirits to fight us
>Snakehome where it will be necessary to not get instagibbed by the king, Also lots of snakes
>The Duke and other wardens

Taldenral is the port city. Teleran is the country.
>>
>>42968857
Your point? It's at war and there will be magic and mayhem flying. Lots of it.
>>
>>42968873
There's not gonna be battles in the capital city anon.
>>
LOL LOGIC HAHAHA FAGGOT WHY LISTEN TO THAT SHIT
>>
>>42968880
There already was one, and it's a port city, I'd hit it hard and blockade it if I were an enemy. Just because it's the capital doesn't mean it's safe.
>>
I wonder if Eugene has made any more ridiculous brews since we left him? I'm stoked to see Liss and Aina too. At least I think those were their names. It's been a while.
>>
>>42968843
I really don't see how it would help against the snake king
>>
>>42968953
An Antimagic grenade would take out his scales at least. Lord help us if we can fuse a snakebreaker with a dispel and snake blood.
>>
>>42968974
Alchemy won't work on his scales at all.
>>
>>42968974
Dispel brews just render other brews inert if you mix them.

> Dispel Elixir

Really, it's about time you should get to work on this, you figure. This brew has been bothering you for a very long time.

As you finish getting the final touches done, a set of hands clamp down on your shoulders. You give a yelp and nearly knock over your now-finished Dispel Elixir as Hiss laughs.
It would appear that she woke up at some point and has been standing behind you, watching you brew. You didn't even notice.
"What are you brewing there? Anything cool?"

"My brews are always cool."

"Hmph. I'll be the judge of that."

"Check it out."
You stir your finger through the mixture, prompting it to fizzle and spark.
"Dispel Elixir. The real thing."

"Oh, I remember that thing from back in Melire. You not being able to brew it caused us a LOT of trouble, you know."

"Oi! You were the one who said I could do it in the first place!"

Hiss shrugs.
"It's a potion and you were an alchemist. Why the fuck wouldn't you?"

"You know there's more to it then that."

"Yeah, now. Not then. Shit, that was a while ago wasn't it?"

"I hope that girl is doing well."

Hiss' eyes narrow.
"Which girl?"

"The one near Melire that we took the Dispel Elixir from, remember?"

"I remember that she sold us out."

"After you attacked her."

"That was my mistake. My mistake for just not killing her and taking the damn potion."

"I don't really care that she sold us out anymore. Time heals all wounds and whatnot."

Ask her to brew a snakebreaker with us.

This. Throw in some of our bottled supervenom too just for kicks.

This, let's make an overkill brew

Plus>>42969062
It's been a while since we made a new offensive brew.
>>
>>42968812
I counted this >>42968645 as a vote. Not super sure if it is or not since it isn't very visibly made clear but I've missed votes like that in the past.

>>42969062
Snake blood too. Call it the "Fuck Spirits" brew

What do you guys think about visiting our old village when we get close to it?
>>
Sorry guys, I'm feeling pretty out of it so I've archived I'm gonna end the thread here. Next thread will be this little crafting bit finished up as well as arriving in Taldenral.
>>
>>42969458
Thanks for running. All these half-threads are better than no threads I guess.
>>
>>42969458
The other reason is that I'm really hungry and I have like, no food left in the house so I should probably clear time in my schedule to go shopping between this thread and going to work.
>>
>>42969458
Thanks for running Ouro. Have a good one, get better.

>>42969453
If we remember it's name and location, sure.

>>42969470
>>42969470
Probably.
>>
>>42969453
Our alchemy teacher's going to be pretty surprised

>so uh I'm a Master now
>>
>>42969458
Thanks for running.
I have to get up early so this actually works for me
>>
>>42968617
Different KINDS of magic, and combining all three could be interesting. I mean, would it distill to the same magic of would it still be different? Then we can start to work on what causes it to express itself differently if it IS the same kind of magic.
