Always liked the idea that the Addams clan was so large that there were dozens of weird eccentric families like them spread across the globe. Those odd people on the hill by the graveyard outside of town: every country has at least one, and nobody can quite remember how long they've been there.

Gave me the idea for a NWoD campaign where the players are given a juicy plothook that a reclusive family of vampires are sitting on a huge fortune. When they get there of course, they notice that these spooky people are not quite like any vampires they've ever seen before, and seem sort of friendly but hey, loot. This plot would obviously be aimed at a somewhat amoral party that could be tempted to steal the cash anyways.

So they rob the "vampires" (who are obviously a group of Addams proxies) and maybe even mortally wound a few... only to find they've angered a world-wide clan of supernatural beings who might seem kooky and silly, but who respond to threats against their relatives and their holdings with unfathomably ruthless intensity, and who don't stay dead no matter what punishment you heap upon them.

TL;DR: trick the players into robbing the Addamsesy and ending up on the run from the entire extended family

Tough job tbh. An Addams family-alike would work very well as a group of libertine Ashwood Abbey hunters too.

Precisely. I liked the idea of what would happen if the Addamses genuinely got mad. I mean, they fucked up the villains in the two movies pretty royally. Imagine what they'd do to someone who actually stole their stuff, escaped, and maybe even killed a family member in the process.

>>42997518

Well, it could be a tough job if you tried to take down the Addamses first. But if the players just went for the fortune, and if the plot hook provided them with a clue or secret to make that easier, I could see them getting in and out by the skin of their teeth.

I just mean that nothing really seems to faze them, even what would (apparently) be mortal harm. They'd be tough to kill.

I'm not sure that vampire is the best thing either. They're sort of vague, nondescript monsters and they seem restricted just being vamps. I wonder if that new monster supplement could cover them.
>>
>>42997539

Well, you'd have to make the Addams proxy not too obvious. Maybe have them resemble the Addamses themselves, but frame them as if it's some other branch of the family. Like, their cousins in Germany or something. Put them in a castle instead of a decrepit house, put them on a cliff overlooking the sea, mix up the character personalities with other cliches. Just enough to throw the players off the scent.

Then, when the full clan begins the pursuit, maybe Morticia and Gomez show up.
>>
>>42997625

I wasn't saying that they WERE vamps, but that the players got misleading information to make them think that. Some informant passes them a story about the rich family of vamps, but when the players arrive they find that while the family is obviously supernatural and gothic, they don't actually seem like vampires, but who cares, maybe it's just a type of vamp they haven't heard of before, and there's all this money...
>>
>>42997637

Dangit, I still can't type. Meant have them NOT resemble the Addamses themselves.
>>
>>42997667
Morticia was definitely a Vamp.

Lawful Good, at least in the TV show. They value honesty and philanthropy, and try to do the right thing.
>>

This.

They are lawful good, but they have very different values on aesthetics and etiquette.
>>
>>42997925

They accidentally murder a stripper in the second movie and just shrug it off with "c'est la vie!"
>>
>>42997903
Yeah. They were never really portrayed as evil. Just eccentric.
>>
>>42997925
Exactly. Most of the humor in the TV series revolves around the Addams genuinely wanting to do nice stuff, but their weird tastes make even more problems for the normals. They have a torture chamber and throw knives at each other, but they don't want to hurt anyone. They genuinely think they're doing the right thing.
>>
>>42997992
The movies and the TV series are very, very different, both in tone and personality. The movies is grimmer and closer to the original comics, but I kinda like the friendlier TV series Adams better.
>>
>>42998009
I guess the important thing is stuff like that IS casual fun to other Addamses.
>>
>>42997580
If you killed on of their family members they wouldnt get mad because that would be the normal thing to do. They would probably thank you for freeing up a bedroom.
>>
>>42998067
I don't think you understand how the Adams view family. Family is very important to them, to the point they even still play games with their dead relatives. They would not be happy if someone killed a family member.

Yes they do all kinds of odd things, stuff we consider torture is normal for them, fun even, but they don't kill.
>>
Their whole narrative is wholeheartedly dedicated to the rejection of conventionality and order.

They are utterly apathetic towards the welfare of other people.

They are Chaotic Neutral in a nutshell.

That being said, they would make a terrible D&D adventuring party and no neckbeard should attempt to emulate them except in a campaign specifically dedicated to that theme.
>>
>>42998667

Well, it's sometimes implied they kill each other regularly, but it just doesn't stick.

Gomez and Morticia Adams were one of the greatest tv love stories and very supportive parents.

It's not just their weirdness and eccentricity that makes them a tough opponent. Luck is on their side, always. If you go against them, everything will go wrong for you, often in the most horrible way imaginable. Both Murphy and Finagle may as well be Adamses.

>>
>>42995783
Lawful Neutral.
They have difficulty with social norms and find things like torture and murder fascinating, but they stay wholly within the confines of the law and only practice their crafts on the willing, IE each other.

Remember that they see causing misery to be a form of affection, like the "playful" torture between Pugsley and Wednesday, or the more intimate torture between Gomez and Morticia ("She meets your gaze and promises, To send you to the sky, When all the while behind that smile, She's wondering how you'll die, That's why it's so delicious, To be dominated by Morticia")

The only real "evil" they do is Gomez constantly breaking his neighbors windows with golfballs and Wednesday casually traumatizing girlscouts with simple phrases and statements.
>>
>>42997667
In the very first Addams Family story, Wednesday and Pugsly smile while their mother buys them a pet dragon.
That was in fact the direct inspiration for the pet dragon in The Munsters.
>>
>>42997753
That may not be.
Its played that neither Morticia nor Gomez are actually aware of which one of them Grandmama is the mother of, and she may in fact not be related to them at all.

But if Grandmama IS Morticia's mother like some works suggest, she can't be that old.

Killing someone who's trying to rob and/or murder you is perfectly legal in most circumstances, and is hardly morally offensive.

Just because the Addams family was usually fairly creative in its means of self defense doesn't make them baddies.

I like phrasing alignment questions as "X ends by Y means".

For example, Lawful Evil. You can pursue lawful ends (a nice orderly kingdom) by evil means (torturing anyone who opposes you, sending revenants to haunt your foes), or you can pursue evil ends (summoning a greater Outer God) by lawful means (organizing the bureaucracy so people volunteer as cultists).

The Addams are Chaotic Ends by Any Means.

>>
>>42997420
Well, okay, so you want the group to steal from the Addams family, but do you realise what that involves? First you have to find the secret entrance to the vault passage. Then there will be some sort of deadly fun ride to the vault door. Then you'd need some ridiculously elaborate/theatric password. (I suggest making your group actually perform the password.

The Addamses probably keep a few deadly pets in the vault too. Not as guards, but because those pets are most comfortable in that sort of environment.
>>
>>43011193

And then, when you're done stealing, the Addams family waves you off from the Widow's Walk on the roof, as if to congratulate you on your heist.

Then the treasure explodes into snakes.
>>
>>43011220
Now that you mention it... would the Addamses even realise that they've been burgled? I can just picture it actually. The party murderhobos the entire family, makes it to the vault, hauls the treasure up and out, and BAM. Whole Addams family is playing in the living room when they come out, greets the party in a friendly manner, and just chats on like nothing happened.

"Oh, you wanted some treasure for a charitable cause? Sure, sure, go ahead, help yourselves! Hey, why not take these exploding gems while you're at it? Go ahead, help yourself, it's so nice that you're collecting money for the Unburied Undead Charity!
>>
True Neutral.
>>
>>43011343

They'd just be baffled. I mean, you rob *tombs* and *banks* and *orphanages*. Not their house.

I mean, all their money is in the bank; Gomez is no fool. Sure, they might have some gold bars and dubloons in the vault for sentimental reasons, but burglars? Really?

They'd treat it as a sort of game. Home Alone, but with more encouragement. "Nice dodge, old sport! Now watch out for the trapdoor!" Constantly one step ahead of the invaders, or one step right behind their shoulder.
>>
How would you even rob the Adams family vault? According to the movies, it's layer upon layer of nightmare puzzle traps with ejection systems.

The first movie was all about robbing the vault and they spent weeks in the mansion alone and couldn't get past the first few rooms.
>>
>>42997420
I'll remind you that robbing Gomez was the plot of the first movie and it didn't work too well.

>Jayne
>Chaotic Evil
He's a dick, and he's mostly motivated by self-interest, but I wouldn't say he's really evil. More a case of how to do a proper, constructive, not "lulsorandumb" Chaotic Neutral.
Note that every time he gets a chance to do something truly vile, he's pretty disgusted by it. And before you point to the whole thing with turning in Simon and River in Ariel, remember that from his perspective he was protecting the crew from the trouble those two were bringing down on their heads.
Much like Mal, he's just a guy who's decided that to make it day to day in his line of work he HAS to be a bad person. So he tries to be. But he's not very good at it. Pulls it off better than Mal, but still not very well.
>>
>>43028330
I think the overall point of the picture was that none of these characters are by definition what the alignment says, just tend towards it, but can function with others.

You could very easily argue for Norrington that he's not good, or even lawful, because of stuff he did in Pirates 2, but he did it because he craved his old life as an officer, and loathed the barbarism of pirates -> Law. And when it came down to it, he sacraficed himself for what is right -> Good.

This picture is more about a loose boundry of alignments, than the strict one most people bring up, in which no one who ever lived fits in.

If you don't think Jane's evil, you've set the bar too high. There may be an argument that he's trending towards Chaotic Neutral by the end, but if you look at some of the shit he's done, there's really no question that he's coming from Evil.
>>
>>43030353

That's the problem with some alignment charts. Jayne may have started out on the evil side of things, but by the time the movie rolls around, he's evolved past that.

The Addams family are WEIRD, CHAOTIC, and GROTESQUE...but in all honesty they're the sweetest people on the face of the planet.
You know all the "play violence," yeah, if they wanted to they could easily murder each other, but they don't. Instead they play a high-risk game(their lives) that would only appeal to the greatest adrenaline junkies. Each fight, each torture, hell, the sheer playfullness of their existance is done because they need the excitement. (Bare in mind in the series they had a Lion called "kitty" who never actually went after people...unless they deserved it, it was basicly an oversized cat as far as the Addams were concerned.)

>>42997420
>>42998667
Now here's the kicker, Gomez is a playful man, but like all playful protagonists imagine him if someone actually maliciously murdered Morticia .
That normally quiet smiling face in a mask of fury, not speaking, not playing, aiming to harm, maim, THEN kill.
Normally I might suggest suicide as a way out, but in all honesty, given their connections with Witches, Witch-Doctors, Mediums, etc. I'm not sure even that would keep the entire clan off your back.

The funny thing about Riddick is that he's hyped up in the movies as this super-dangerous murderer and criminal, but we never really see him do anything evil.

Heh. We never get to find out why he was a prisoner in the first place in Pitch Black.
All the later movies and games make it look like his past is catching up with him and he's just fighting for survival, but maybe the shitstorm started with him eating a baby.

I know there is some half hearted stuff about Furia and blubb. But it's really nothing of substance.
>>
>>43032244

Checked, but we only have the movies (and video game) to go by, and in those he doesn't see out trouble and he doesn't kill anyone who doesn't ask for it.

Yeah just saying we don't know for sure. And in Pitch Black there is this nice scene where he's obviously contemplating just going full murderhobo on the pilot until he finds out she's got blood until her hands too. The later movies tried to make him look more sympathetic.

Btw, the games are much, much better than the movies in terms of writing ironically. If those had been made into movies I'm pretty sure Riddick would be even more popular.

Chaotic Neutral.

They don't care about society's rules.
They don't go out of their way to hurt you.
They don't go out of their way to help you.
They do what they do because it's what they do.
If you involve yourself with them, they treat you just like they treat family.
If you can cope with that, then you ARE family.
If you can't, it's your own fault for not realizing that things are different among the Addams.

I was thinking that the Addams core family would be true Fae, who make more of their family (changelings that grow into fae) through finding "new branches", those on their way likely being supernatural entities and pets they keep about the place. Or guys lIke Lurch, Thing, and the like that decided the life wasn't for them. I mean, Gomez and Morticia can't remember who was Granny's kid, Uncle Fester in the movie they found him was normal until he spent time with them, and when they find someone with the kind of spirit that speaks to them, that person ends up part of the family.

Riddick is true neutral with a slice of good and a slice of evil.

he has an INCREDIBLE weakspot for children and innocence that people, namely Johns Jr. take advantage of, that is how Jr. captured him afterall.

the movies make a point that almost all of his reputation is simply built up from the previous event that was caused by his reputation.

so the more bullshit he gets pulled into against any will of his own, just adds to his crazy reputation, and furthers the fear and respect his name is accredited too.

he'll abandon the fuck out of you, but he won't kill you, hell he doesn't even kill the people that fuck with them till they cross some moral line he has set for them, such as Johns, when he was willing to use Jack as a diversion.

until that moment him and Johns had an understanding, and Johns broke the contract.

The "hide in plain sight" strategy works really well for the Masquerade, honestly.

Don't pretend you aren't vampires. Say you *are*. Just don't do anything particularly noticeable, and people will just think you're weird and avoid you.

There were books released with compilations of Charles Addams work, including the Addams family. Most of them are long out of print though (the first one came out in 1964), and since they're still a lucrative business any site that tries to host them gets shot down pretty fast.

I'd suggest you try to find a print copy of the books. Due to their age your best bet would probably be a public library.

The Adamses are weird but they aren't evil, they are actually very loving and supportive and the single most functional TV family to date.
