You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Over the next couple of weeks, the Bretons continued to relentlessly push deeper and deeper into Reik territory. It appeared that the Reiklanders concentrated most of their defensive strength on the initial defensive line, and didn't have the time to regroup as the Bretons relentlessly pushed forward.

However, such quick advancement came at a price. The Bretons were quickly outrunning their own supply lines, and were taking heavy casualties as more peasant foot troops and knights errant were thrown at Reiklander defenses. The current pace of advancement was unsustainable.

Unfortunately, it was proving difficult to convince the Bretons of that.

"If we keep going, we risk getting flanked and encircled." Parker tries to explain to Lord Artois as calmly as possible. "And if that happens, all of the gains we made effectively become meaningless."

"I understand your concerns, but I have my own army to think about." Artois shakes his head. "Their unity to the cause is cemented with the promise of land and glory. Staying put too long, especially in enemy territory, will eat away at their morale. It must be maintained through constant successes."

"Or until you hit a wall." You frown. "Therefore giving the knights an excuse to stop their advance?"

"Very good." Lord Artois nods. "Once momentum has gathered, it is difficult to stop. The knights will question me if I stop them without good reason."

"And resupply isn't?" Rock groans.

"Not particularly." Artois shakes his head and points to the map. "Now, here are the options as I see them. We can order to a stop to our advance, but we risk alienating the allied lords and knights. We keep pushing and hope for the best, or..."

"...or what?" Bannon raises an eyebrow.

"We push in a different direction." Artois points further south, where the Tilean offensive was taking place. "You mentioned your own nation's advance had faltered, right?"

"I wouldn't say 'falter', more like, careful." Bannon clarifies.

"Nonetheless, their progress has been much slower." Artois says. "If we turn our advance southwards, we can link up with the Tileans and then advance as a combined force."

"That's not a bad plan." Parker concedes. "But that creates a massive flank to cover, and if the Reiklanders regroup, they can take the chance to counterattack..."

I only just realized yesterday that country names are taken from Warhammer Fantasy.

Alright, so we thought of submachine guns and shotguns for Roy, and Tarin to use for self-defence, but how about other things for our VT group?

I was thinking that we could have at least one of our VTs could have a scout bike strapped onto them. Maybe Rock and Alex's (They need their gimmick dammit! We have our recoilless rifles, and the twins have their armour)

Might as well make it one flank instead of two.
>>
>>43007904
>>Continue the advance.

Make the Reiklanders fight on multiple fronts. Our Bretons are good at pushing and punching, and we can support them as a special-weapons force with our own Tilean VTs. Remember, these guys aren't soldiers. They're nobles out for glory. With hot enough blood, they can get the job done.

Not bad! I can tell you put some good effort into proportion, and tried to get straight lines wherever you could. A bit of shading would really make this pop, but it's a solid scribble.

"I think linking up with Tilean forces is the best compromise." You suggest. "It gives the knights something to do and we can form a combined front."

"Sounds good to me." Bannon nods. "We'll roll with that plan."

"It seems we've reached a consensus, then." Artois smiles. "I'll inform the other lords."

"The problem is keeping our flank secure." Parker reminds you all. "Even with all our advances, there's still at least two fresh divisions of Reiklander troops within a stone's throw of us. The moment they see us changing direction they might take the chance to attack."

"We will be leaving ample numbers of men at arms to serve as a rear guard." Lord Artois explains. "These lands have also been granted to Lord Arwald. He and his knights will also be responsible for the defense here."

"I don't know if that's enough..." Parker frowns. "Maybe we should stay behind to bolster the defenses..."

"I think you would do better leading the advance, as you have been doing so far. Your presence greatly improves the overall morale of the army." Artois warns.

"Maybe we should preemptively attack the Reiklanders? A hit and run raid to convince them we're stronger than we really are?" Tarin suggests. "Then after that we can catch up with the advance."

"Hm. We've got four crews, so we can split duties." Bannon puts a hand to his chin. "But I don't like the idea of splitting up the unit. It would leave each of us vulnerable."

"I'm all for the diversionary attack." You say.

"Yeah, our VT just got a major refit so we're itching for some action, too." Rock nods. "Best to test it out now rather than later."

"I'm up for anything. "Axel cracks his knuckles. "Haven't come up against anything yet that can crack Brick's armor."

"Looks like we got a consensus." Bannon nods. "Lord Artois, you get your knights ready to move. We'll hit the Reiklanders and keep their eyes off you."

"Thank you all." Lord Artois nods. "I will leave the planning to you, then."

The Breton lord then calmly leaves the command tent, so now it was just you and your platoon present.

"All right, so first things first, we need to decide what to hit." Parker dumps a number of files and photos down on the table. "I've been collating data from our scouts, and I think I found a few promising targets."

You glance through the documents and see what Parker was able to find. The first target was an observation post atop a nearby hill the Reiklanders were using to keep eyes on Breton positions. Taking it out would deprive the Reiklanders of their eyes for a little while, but at the same time, taking out a reconnaissance post like that was sure to warn them something was up, even if they didn't know exactly what.

The second possible target was a fuel depot set up at a nearby village holding thousands of gallons of gasoline. It was well behind the lines and well guarded, but taking it out would effectively cripple Reikland's ability to stage a mechanized assault.

The third attack was the boldest, and obviously the most dangerous. A hit and run raid on the local Reikland Army HQ itself. Destroying or at least degrading their command and control ability would halt all activities here for a good long while.

"I think the fuel dump is the most effective option." You suggest. "I mean, if the Reiklanders can't bring their armor into the mix, I'm sure the garrison can handle their infantry."

"That's what I thought." Parker smiles. "I think we can penetrate that far in if it's just the four of us. Speed is key here."

"Yeah, well, first things first, we need to make sure our VTs are all in working order." Bannon grunts. "Roy, you go check Rock and Alex's VT. Make sure it's actually in working order."

"Yes sir." You salute. "Come on, Tarin."

Tarin silently stands up and follows you.

"Heh, you're gonna be surprised when you finally see it!" Rock laughs. "She's like a completely new tank!"

"So, what did they actually do to it?" You ask.

"Heh... how about you see it for yourself?" Rock laughs.

Rock and Alex lead you to the motorpool, where their newly refurbished VT was waiting. You see...

"I notice the legs are a bit different." You observe. The legs seemed to be a little thicker, with additional hydraulic lines and cables in them, suggesting a larger range of movement. "What changed?"

"Oh, well, it was this cool little thing the Bretons were experimenting with." Rock grins as he points to the feet. "See those?"

You narrow your eyes, and the realize there are wheels built into the feet.

"Wheels?" You blink.

"Yep. Increases our tactical mobility." Rock nods.

"Lets us cover more ground in short bursts of speed." Alex confirms. "They haven't figured out how to keep it sustained, and it doesn't handle rough ground so well, but it's still a big improvement over just legging it everywhere."

"Nice." You nod.

"Yep, Lagoon is certainly going to take us places." Rock says somewhat nostalgically.

"Lagoon? That's her name?" Tarin asks.

"Yeah, from old time." Rock nods. "Anyways, as you can see, she's all good and in one piece."

"Yeah, she looks good enough." You nod and turn back to Rock. "So, what does 'Lagoon' mean to you, anyways?"

"Aw geez..." Rock frowns and puts a cigarette in his mouth. "That story's a long one. But the long and short of it is that it was the name of the old merc company I used to run with. Not my idea, of course, but it kinda stuck with me over the years."

"So, it's one last connection to your past?"

"You could say that." Rock lights his cigarette and takes a deep breath from it. "Though honestly, it's probably something I should keep clinging to. My old buddies, we didn't exactly part under the nicest of circumstances."

You could tell that this seemed to be a pretty sensitive issue for Rock, judging from the pained look on his face, despite his attempts to remain outwardly cheerful.

You decide to go see what Willem is up to. You head over to where Lord Artois' men are garrisoned, and could see his knights and squires packing up and preparing to move out tomorrow. You manage to catch sight of Willem, who is busy doing maintenance checks on his VT.

"Ah! Lord Roy, Lady Tarin!" Willem bows when you approach. "To what do I owe this honor?"

"We were just checking in." You say. "Getting ready to move out?"

"That's right." Willem nods. "Lord Artois says we move south! I hear you will be going on another mission?"

"Yeah, we'll be staging a diversionary attack so the Reiklanders won't attack the moment you leave." You explain.

A status update on those laddies would be good. They fought bravely, and it would be good to know how units like theirs have fared against the Reikzis. Another small tactical team might be good for our depot-demolishing mission, especially if their powered armor enables them to lay demo charges on "soft spots".

"You know, you can come along with us too, if you want." You answer Willem's unspoken request.

"R-really?" Willem blinks in surprise. "But-"

"I'm sure Lord Artois will allow it." You grin. "Isn't that right, Tarin?"

"Well, we do seem to be able to exercise an unnatural ability to influence his decisions." Tarin nods. "I don't think there would be an issue."

"Anyways, why do you want to come along, anyways?" You ask Willem. "It's not like our attack is going to seize any land or prestige. In fact, it's one of those kinds of missions knights don't even bother with."

"Don't worry, I won't say a thing." You chuckle as you pat him on the shoulder. You guess even Bretons approached crushes in the same way Tileans did. Awkwardly. "But you really shouldn't worry about it. Status is overrated, anyways."

"Says the person with the titleship of a Lord." Willem points out.

"Yeah... I'm still getting used to that." You concede. "Anyways, you think we can count on any peasant support this time? Those yeomen really helped us out."

"Sorry, but they're being used to scout the roads or to shore up the the defenses here." Willem shakes his head. "Maybe Lord Arwald has men to spare, but I doubt it. He can be very... possessive"

"Can't hurt to ask thought, right?" Tarin asks.

"I suppose." Willem shakes his head. "Anyways, if you will allow me to accompany you, then I need to make my steed combat ready."

"Well we'll see you later then, Willem." You nod to the squire. "You should go find Bannon and Parker and they'll fill you in."

"Thank you, I will remember that." Willem grins.

"Come on, Tarin, let's go see how Axel and Alfie are doing." You say.

Tarin nods wordlessly and falls in behind you.

You head to your platoon's main staging area, where sure enough, Axel and Alfie were doing their own maintenance checks on Brick. Being much heavier, Brick's engine suffered significantly more strain when in use, which meant she usually had to undergo more maintenance than a regular Wolverine. Then again, you guess it wasn't a problem for a girl who practically lived in it all the time.

"Roy! What brings you here?" Axel grins, wiping black engine grease from his hands.

"Oh! H-hi!" Alfie pokes her head out from the driver's hatch.

"Ah, no, just dropping by to see how things were going." You say, and your eyes wander over to the other end of the motor pool, where you see the wrecked carcasses of the Panthers you destroyed were stowed. Since you were the ones that "killed" them, they were yours by conquest, which sounded really cool, honestly. "Did the engineers figure anything out?"

"Not really. They're good with handling their own stuff, but when it comes to other people's work, that shit just flies over the heads." Axel shakes his head. "I guess that's what happens when you rely on individual artisans, and don't have your own central engineering corp."

"That's a damn shame." You shake your head.

"I heard from Bannon and Parker that Egan is being flown in, though." Axel continues. "Apparently, Panthers have been showing up on the Tilean front and have been playing merry hell all across the line. Command is desperate to find any weakness or vulnerability they can."

"To think they could have so many of these things without us knowing..." Tarin frowns.

You walk over to the pile of twisted and burnt metal that represented the fallen Panthers, hoping you could find something salvageable among the debris.

"What are you doing?" Tarin asks. "These are nothing but burnt out husks."

"There's always something salvage!" You insist. "No matter how wrecked it looks!"

A little bit of digging finally gives you some gold in the form of salvageable parts. With a little modification, you could might be able to incorporate them into Clementine!

"Hey, Tarin, look what I found!" You yell with enthusiasm as you pop out from the pile of wreckage.

"An optic?" Tarin raises an eyebrow.

"Not just any optic!" You squeal. "This one apparently has at least 1.5 times the magnification of our current optics! It's no wonder these things have been so accurate!"

"I see." Tarin nods. "Well, now that our little treasure hunt is done, should we go see this Lord Arwald?"

"Yeah, let's." You grin.

You stock the salvaged optic next to Clementine, reminding yourself to install it when you have the time. You then proceed to the Command Tent, where presumably you'd find Lord Arwald, with Tarin in tow. Sure enough, you find him on one of the command tents, sitting in his own personal little throne, surrounded by servants and knights, who eye you warily but otherwise treat you with respect.

"Ah, the Champions!" Lord Arwald's face brightens. "What brings you to this currently humble abode? Come to congratulate me on my exploits?"

You glance at Tarin, then back at the Lord.

"Really now?" Arwald leans forward, a big smile on his face. "To think I would be recognized as such! These lands here were reward enough, but to be recognized by the Champions! This is too fortuitous."

"And we were going to be going on a raiding mission, and I was hoping you would be magnanimous enough to spare us some of your forces to assist us." You continue.

How do VT function as they do now? Considering the size of the machine, Wouldn't Roy manning the gunner position while commanding a tank overburden him like most tank commanders would.

Also Tarin wouldn't be able to drive if she's also manning the hull machine gun. So WOuldn't the Wolverine need at least 3 or 4 people to use it ?

Thanks for running, Merc. I conked out around 0310 or so GMT-5. I love VT quest, but you're literally rampaging it through the middle of my sleep schedule! Sometimes I gotta be up at 0700 on Sundays, and I'm not as young as I used to be.

As for questions, how grand of a campaign do you have planned for VT Quest? Is it possible that we'll one day be tearing down the Not!Reichstag and fighting Occult Cyborg Not!Hitler in his personal Baneblade VT? Or will this be more like World War 1, where after much bloodshed and suffering an armistice is signed that will hopefully ensure the world never again has to face the horrors of total war?

Also, once we've whupped the Reikzis, can we go stomp on some of those other nations that were offered at the outset?

Finally, how are you enjoying VT Quest? Is it one of your favorites so far, or do you prefer other quests, like those CyberIdol specials? We know you love all your characters and stories, and we appreciate the effort you put into all of them!

So far the other regional powers are in a "wait and see" stage. Tilea has traditionally been a hard shell to crack, so they don't want to commit unless they're sure they have a good chance of succeeding. The fact that Tilea managed to turn the tides against Reikland's offensive has convinced them that an invasion is probably not the best idea.

Plus they're not really that fond of Reikland, either.

Pretty serious for both sides. Casualties were in the thousands. Breton only lost a few dozen VTs against the hundred or so Reikland lost, but Lynxes are a dime a dozen compared to knights.

Possible, but what you find would be very limited compared to what Egan can do once she gets her hands on them. Eventually, though, Panthers will lose their research/scavenge value.

Yes, and damn good ones. The German tanks were far inferior to the French tanks they faced at the outset of WW2. A large number of the French were pretty much impervious to German fire.
>>
>>43022320
I need to add, there is one exception. The Germans had a far superior system for command. That was their big advantage

Infrastructure wasn't in place to move lots of stuff that quickly and the French didn't have all that many tanks to begin with.

The French possibly COULD have halted the German invasion. However, their leadership was paralyzed with a sense of defeatism and stagnation. Many of the men were infected with it as well, possibly as a result of their leadership's unwillingness. The men were not as a whole redirected to face the German invasion, and the outcome was seen as already set in stone. Those units who fought did well, and sold their lives dearly. Look at Dunkirk. Massively outnumbered, the mostly French defenders held on long enough for the Miracle of Dunkirk to occur.

And let me tell you, some of those French bastards who fought were fucking insane. We're talking literally running down infantry and antitank guns.
>>
>>43022424
I will grant that. As such, when the Sitzkrieg ended and the Blitzkrieg began, the French leadership was utterly stunned.
>>
>>43022623
huh. Is america the only nation around ww2 that didn't use a complete top down system but allowed the sergeants and Officers on the ground to make decisions? Could france have survived if they used the American system?

Let's look at the Char B1. It had thick armour for the time and German tanks couldn't penetrate it from the front. It had a hull mounted howitzer on the front (aimed by the driver) meant to take down fortifications. Tore through panzers until they got good shots through the sides.
>>
>>43022678
No, it was used pretty much everywhere except the USSR and Japan. Possibly the Italians as well, but I'm not well versed in them in the slightest.

There was plenty of low level leadership. The problem was, there simply wasn't enough of them and they weren't as organized as they should have been. If the military had decided to make a fight of it, I wager they could have at the very least made it an extremely bloody job for the Germans, at the very least extending the war by a month.
>>
>>43022643
Pray we don't meet the VT equivalent of Walter Christie.

He'd make VTs transform into race cars...
>>
>>43022740
You didn't mention the gun on top. And even from the sides, many German guns simply couldn't cut it until close range. There's this one incident where pretty much the entire antitank complement of an entire German division couldn't stop a convoy of French tanks as they moved down the road, despite flanking positions. Dozens of hits on almost all tanks.
>>
>>43022762

>>
>>43022866
but the french never surrendered in WW1 and Napoleon kicked ass for the most part.
>>
>>43022740
Oh please the chat b1 was not a good tanks at all. It was slow and could be easily flank. The souma s35 was a better tank. However both were made too little to late.

All they were stuck with was several models of tanks that do the same thing. With the short barrel 37mm gun used on the ft17
>>
>>43022822
Nationalistic dickwaving. But in large part, because the French rolled over so easily in WW2. The high command and senior civilian leadership were struck by a defeatest emotion, as said earlier. As a result, France did not give anywhere near the resistance they could have.
>>
>>43022961
The Germans didn't seem to think they were bad. They fought the goddamn thing, and knew exactly what a threat it was. The KV-1 is another example of such a vehicle, and that thing was fierce.
>>
>>43022389
The problem was the French didn't mass their tanks like the Germans did. So it was easy for Germany to take them out piecemeal.
>>
>>43022825
No...it's absolute genius!

It can be an amphibious VT that has turbines in the back and webbed feet on the legs to paddle.

It will change VT designs forever.
>>
>>43022998
Indeed and that is why they flanked the bloody thing. Besides they were too few in number and had poor speed and operational range.

It's a lesser version of when the allies were scared of the tiger. Despite the fact not a lot were thrown at them in the western front and pushed them aside
>>
>>43023526
Even when they flanked the monster, often times they still couldn't kill it. It was by no means a shit tank as you claim. It was more than adequate for the war it fought. The problem was the French didn't use all the bloody things they could.
>>
>>43023757
The sad thing they did. They didn't make a lot of them at the time. Hell they were in the middle of upgrading the things during the war.
>>
>>43023831
Ah here's our problem. You fail to realize that operationally the French did not commit all the forces they could to the fight.
>>
So long story short the french man on the ground was a good fighter and had the will and (mostly) training to defend his homeland. It was the high command that was fucking incompetent.
>>
>>43024215
Pretty much.
>>
>>43024181
What? Well part of that was obvious. But most of the French tank designs were not very good. Most of their tanks were ft17s in reserve and a lot of their combat tanks were r35 fcm36 h-35 and a couple other minor tanks.

which were not good at all.

They German Arsenal had Czech tanks like the 35 and 38t and were more reliable then what the French had at the time
>>
>>43024215
>>43024254
Well their equipment wasn't very good either. Most of them were using rifles and carbines from ww1 in which even then were not that great in the trenches compared to the Mauser. Not to mention the fact they were not able to equip all their troops or at least the ones that escape Poland
>>
>>43021353
>inb4 we face off against an SPG Ace that is stupidly good fighting VTs at close range via direct fire.
>>
>>43024277
>But most of the French tank designs were not very good.
You have failed to prove this. If we look at the actual combat that took place, we see this is a flat out lie. In combat, they acquitted themselves well, proving to have, in all cases, at least parity with German tanks, if we go by the absolute most anti-French history we can.

>Most of their tanks were ft17s in reserve
There were only 8 total battalions of FT17 at the start of the war. The numbers of FT17s that they had were taken out of the depots and sent into the grinder to defend the British due to the Germans cutting off the best French units, which had the best armor.

Nearly an equal amount of R35s were used, and were in the process of replacing all the FT17s from the war. They had gotten all but the 8 battalions previously mentioned. A bit light on the antitank armament, but still capable.

Take the number of R35s that were in use and half it. That's how many Char B1s there were.

>FCM36
There were hardly any of those made. Far fewer than the Char B1.

>They German Arsenal had Czech tanks like the 35 and 38t
Let me get this straight. You're pointing to the two tanks which formed a tiny fraction of the German armored force and claiming that they were what all German tanks were like? Complete and utter bullshit.

They were in fact more reliable than the French, I will give you that. I will note that reliability was not so much an issue during the war.
>>
>>43024688
The fact that I pointed out the R-35, and the H-35 which had horrible speed, and a gun used for the Ft-17 was severely out of date. (Granted the H-35 did receive a slight upgrade but that gotten into the too little too late)

Again the French Short Barrel 37mm, was not very good. had slightly better armor and speed (which is not saying a whole lot) and was manned by 2 men.

As for the FCM 36, I was trying to make a point in regards to French tank design and development. Think about three different type of tank which essentially did the same thing and had different parts was essentially a disaster.

and no, but they were one of the reasons why the Germans started the war earlier then expected.

The Panzer I and II were considered training tanks and didn't make enough Panzer III to start a invasion. The Czechs made enough 35(t) and 38 (t0, to give the Germans enough of a fighting force to fight something like France.

The French has the numbers but besides the few in number Char B1 (which again, was bad that they had to upgrade the blasted things) to the Bis and planned Tier models.

The Souma S35, and the less Reliable Char series. It was a matter of too few in numbers to make a good impression.

and Reliability wasn't an issue during the war? Are you kidding me? Most of the French tanks were not lost due to combat but due to reliability issues! So don't give me that crap.
>>
>>43025075
>and a gun used for the Ft-17 was severely out of date.
Sort of. The gun was actually marvelous for infantry support. Simply marvelous. It was not a good anti-tank weapon, but it had ability enough to destroy the German vehicles.

>H-35
You mean the R35

>armor and speed
For most of them, they were adequate.

>2 man crew
Honestly the biggest downside of those tanks

>nonunified tank design
Big problem, but the tanks themselves proved adequate.

>Panzer II a training tank
No. The Panzer I was a training tank, the Panzer II was a stopgap until the III (and to a lesser degree IV) could be produced.

>Czech tanks
Fucking bullshit and you know it. There were about 300 of them in use during the Battle of France.

>The French has the numbers but besides the few in number Char B1
There were more Char B1s in use than there were Czech tanks, and STILL you claim they were few in number and insignificant. Cognitive dissociation much?

>The Souma S35, and the less Reliable Char series. It was a matter of too few in numbers to make a good impression.
These tanks added up to far more than a thousand tanks. An insignificant number my ass. But what happened to these tanks? These were the best units France had, and as such were bottled up and avoided by the Germans.

>and Reliability wasn't an issue during the war? Are you kidding me? Most of the French tanks were not lost due to combat but due to reliability issues! So don't give me that crap.
Most of these "reliability" issues stemmed from the crew abandoning them.

>No. The Panzer I was a training tank, the Panzer II was a stopgap until the III (and to a lesser degree IV) could be produced.

My point in that statement was the Czech tanks gave Germans enough of an armored to actually think of starting the war.

>

Refer to statement above, and again you didn't clear the issues regarding the tank.

>
These tanks added up to far more than a thousand tanks. An insignificant number my ass. But what happened to these tanks? These were the best units France had, and as such were bottled up and avoided by the Germans.

Weren't a good portion of the Char series sent to France's colonies alongside the FT-17? and I wasn't arguing that they weren't good tanks. The Souma S35 is what i considered France's best tank and can match against the German armor.

>Most of these "reliability" issues stemmed from the crew abandoning them.

Abandoning them why?
