“That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard in my life.” Sumire points to you, giving you the quintessential look of contempt. “And I hang around you a lot.”

“No, it makes perfect sense! The Japanese have been expanding their naval power for years, they’ve got aircraft carriers, they got battleships, and they’re almost leagues beyond what the US Navy has! Now, if you create a lane of travel between Canada in Mexico, there’s almost nothing the UK or Russia can do about it. It’ll take a hell of a long time to circumvent the Earth, but… imagine it, Sumire. The Japanese invading Great Britain!” Or worse than that, the Nazis sinking Russia too! That’ll create a huge ocean through which the Nazis can transport materiel to Japan and other allies. They can turn Germany into quite possibly the world’s greatest superpower by power of elimination!

She narrows her eyes at you. “Yeah. That’s still ridiculous.”

“Well regardless of what plan they have for us,” you say. You shut the Atlas, closing up the light maps back into its pages. “You have to agree that the power to sink and raise continents is still something that should not fall into the hands of the Nazis.” She nods, crossing her arms. At least she can understand the danger in that. “Now, we have to escape with this thing. Obviously, this old submarine is not in any shape to move.”

Kirby crawls up your shoulder. “I do not believe that going out the way we came will be a valid option either, if Rana and Sacagawea have not held their positions.” You hear a loud rumbling outside, sounds like rocks crashing and grinding

“They’ll hold,” you say. “They’re loyal! Rana even more so.”

“Loyalty does not equal competence.” That… is a good point. Ugh. You want to believe in Rana and you will continue to believe in her.

“Can we go now? My underwear is soaked!” She shivers a bit, standing up in the partially flooded Captain’s quarters wearing nothing but her underwear. You actually didn’t notice that you were shivering and also in your underwear trying to comprehend the scope of the Nazis’ plans. How they even know about the Atlas too is another thing entirely! You have to get out and you have to get out now.

-

-

You breach the surface of the lake water. “Okay! Sumire!” She pops up with you and Kirby. “We’ll get dressed and then we’ll-“ You’re stopped by the sight of leather boots, right on the lip of the water. You look up to see the very vicious grin of Knives looking down on you.

“Liberty. If I had known, I would’ve stripped too.” She starts unbuttoning her jacket. “Hm?” You shake your head. “Alright!” She buttons it back up quickly, motioning you two to get up out of the water. You sigh, standing up and meeting her, and an entire squad of Stosstruppen, backed up by Otto von Bismarck himself. And behind them was a massive drill tank, with rays of light behind it, the way to the surface. “I love your underwear by the way, it will look very nice though on the floor of my bedroom.”

“Where’s Bomber?” you ask.

“Oh her?” She shrugged, smirking. “We killed her.”

“What!?” you scream, storming over to her. The stosstruppen point their guns at you, surprised by your sudden rage.

“Kidding, I am kidding!” she shouts, pushing you away. “I made the correct deduction that you must have escaped into the mountain. So instead of facing them on their terms, I just dug.” She motions to the drill tank, smiling. “We still had this in storage, is that not amazing? And as for your friends…” She snaps her fingers, and the two of them are brought forth to kneel. Rana is wearing an anti-magic collar, grimacing in pain as the troopers hold the two of them. “They tried to stop us, even killed half of the work crew. But I have not lost my touch, yes?” She points to the Atlas under your arm. “Now, because you have arrived in your underwear, I will offer you a chance here to walk away with your friends intact. Give me the Atlas.”

Rana shakes her head, mouthing loud no’s to you despite looking desperately scared.

“You keep your word.” You drop the Atlas onto the rocky floor. “Or I will kill you.” You kick it over to her. She laughs, grabbing it and clutching it to her chest.

“Ah, very well!” She waves her hand, and then the guards release Rana and Sacky back into your possession, with the collar still on Rana. “Well, I suppose now is the day that the United States of America becomes the new Atlantis!” She opens the Atlas, revealing the light map of the Earth. “Say goodbye!” she cackles. You’re about to transform and stop her, when she pokes her finger on the North American continent.

And nothing happens. She squints a bit, her finger phasing through the globe. She tries again. This time, a little red message scrawled in that alien language appears on the continent. Nothing appears to have changed. “Kirby,” you say. “Did you feel anything?”

“No change in the geographical environment,” he says.

“Huh.” Knives tries waving her hand right through the globe, trying to make it work. All it does is give her even more of those weird error messages, which flash up everytime her fingers go right through an island or a continent. “How does this work?” she asks. You look over at Kirby. Who simply stares back at you. Ugh, he doesn’t know how it works either.

“Like this.” You kick the book right out of her hands and into yours. Then very swiftly, you bash her over the head with it, knocking her down. “Run!” you yell. Sumire, Rana, and Sackey duck for cover as you transform. Your shield immediately forms and blocks out the barrage of bullets flying at you.

> MAGICAL GIRL LIBERTY! <

“Get her!” yells Knives as she recovers. The Stosstruppen all dump out of the drill tank, numbering at over two dozen of them. They all fire at you, their shots bouncing and plinking right off your magical shields. Thank goodness for underfunding.

“Go, go!” you yell. Sumire grabs Rana and Sacky and takes them down to the hole you came in from. A squad of Stosstruppen follow them, ostensibly to cut off their escape. They don’t have much of a chance though if this is all they can do to you. But that just left you and Kirby against him.

> OTTO VON BISMARCK <
> The Armored Poltergeist <

He marches up from behind the formation, and knocks one of the troopers out of his way. He prepares his assault cannon and fires. The barrage nearly knocks you back into the lake. Your heels dig into the Earth and hold firm. But you can feel the magic breaking and sizzling beneath the weight of those bullets. They must have a touch of anti-magic to them!

Kirby hops onto your shoulder. “Whatever you need, I’ll bring it to you.” Thank you, Kirby!

Kirby hops up, then spins around in a ball of fire and lightning. He flies right into your Soul Ring and immediately the heat shoot all over your body. Your shields expand into five points, like great big stars. They start glowing purely white, with burning flames around them. You can feel the hype of the hot flames spew all over your clothes. You return your shields to your wrist, and stare down Otto von Bismarck. It’s time to heat things up.

> MAGICAL GIRL LIBERTY STARFIRE <

You rush at him. One Stosstrupp tries to step in your way and tackle you. And your response is to smash him out of the way. Otto hunches over, bracing. You slam your shields into his metal armor, then begin punching and punching. Speed, speed is better than power now! You spin up your shields, trying to get into him like a can opener. You can’t even see through all the sparks and all the fire you’re kicking up. If you’re doing any damage, it better be severe.

Otto is now on his back, knocked over by your flurry of attacks. Before you can deal the finishing blow, you’re knocked aside by Knives. She flips forward and rights herself, presenting a pair of anti-magic knives. “Oooh, just another reason to love you! You can keep me warm at night!” she hisses.

You spin up your shields again, yelling as you rush at her. She plants herself down and shoves her knives right between the points of your shields, stopping their spin. The anti-magic sparks off in green showers of light. Beyond the sweat, she shows no sign of backing down from the fire. The two of you lean in, nearly to nose, trying to get the advantage.

Then she kisses you on the nose. “Mwah.”

You headbutt her, knocking her backward right into a squad of Stosstruppen. Pervert!

Knives recovers once again, holding her forehead. She shouts at the driver of the drill tank in German, yelling for him. He nods, saluting as he looks out the window. The gigantic monstrous drill starts spinning up again, as the tank starts moving closer to you. She’s going to pulp you!? Well, not today! Another squad of Stosstruppen rush at you, aiming to take you down in melee combat. Their loss. You smack one in the jaw, sending him flying into the cave wall. Another gets crushed into the ground by your shield. The third is sent flying right into the drill, and he is immediately mulched by all the moving parts and sharp blades on it. The drill tank continues forward, right into the lake. The deep waters consume the entire tank, driver and all.

Otto stands up again. There are some clear dents and gashes into his armor, but nothing too substantial. Out of his gun arm shoulder comes a pod of rockets. You hold up your shields. The rockets explode and pop harmlessly off of you. But that lets Knives come in and shove you out of your stance. She slashes upwards, sending more green sparks up. Then downwards. You try for a punch.

And all that comes is a light slash across your chest. You scream in pain, stepping back and hunching over. The Shard in your chest feels like it’s going to explode! You grab your chest, feeling some blood pool in your palm. Nothing too bad, it’ll heal. But the pain! Knives gasps, holding her hand over her mouth. “Oh! Did I hurt you? Excellent!” She grins, rushing at you again. She tackles you back. Not off your feet, but still she manages to stagger you. “I’m not the girl I used to be!” She slashes you arm, and you yelp in pain. “I’m fitter!” She slashes at your leg, dropping you down to your knee. “And much more meaner!” The stosstruppen surround you, pointing their guns down at you.

You look up at Knives, panting heavily. “That supposed to scare me?”

She shrugs. “More make me sexier to you actually.” You slam your shields into the ground. A ring of fire blasts all the Stosstruppen away, and Knives back. You’ve lost the advantage, but you’ve bought more time for your friends to escape. You hold up your shields. You don’t have much left in you right now but you’ll keep fighting. “Guards!” They step back into formation, surrounding you once more.

This is not it, not by a long shot.

Suddenly, one of the troopers is downed by a shot to the head. Everyone turns to the big hole the drill tank made to see Kozminsky and his crew. “Liberty!” He waves at you. “Run for it! We will cover you!” His motley men fire on Knives and her crew with bolt action rifles, shotguns, and pistols. You try to make a break for it, but are stopped by the woman herself.

“Not so fast!” She brandishes her knives. “You’re not running again you coward!” Coward!? Your eye twitches a bit. No one… agh. “I don’t mind having sex with a corpse, but it’s your choice!”

Forget pride. You knock her out of the way, right onto her back. Once that’s done, you speed right towards Kozminsky, leaving a trail of fiery skidmarks in your wake. He’s surprised at the sudden speed of your arrival. But nonetheless, he pats your shoulder and motions you ahead. “Go on, we will be right behind you!” You nod, rushing ahead. He yells at his men in Russian, motioning them on to keep them suppressed.

“Libby!” Sumire and company are down by what appear to be some stolen Kraut cars. “Get in!” You look back to see Kozminsky’s men making a run for the cars as well. You step into the car Sumire and your friends are in, then quickly shove Sumire out of the driver’s seat. “Hey!” She gets in the back, angry. “What did you do that for!?”

“You’re not driving,” you say. She rolls her eyes, grumbling angry. You look over to see Sacky sitting in the passenger seat. “Why is she still here?”

“You’re asking me?” Sumire glares at you, obviously frustrated at not getting to drive.

“We have to go! We have to go!” yells Rana. You all look to see the remaining Stosstruppen and Otto climb up out of the hole. Kozminsky and his crew speed past in their cars, leaving you. You put your foot on the pedal, careening the car forward right into the jungle. That drill tank really cleared a path for you, even right through the killer ant colonies! You pick up the radio. “Kozminsky, where are we going!?”

“Anywhere but here!” he yells. The car crashes through jungle roads and rails. The leaves smash and break apart on the metal hood and the glass windshield. Sacky happily laughs, waving her arms up high as you drive for your life out of danger. You look up to see the Japanese gunship overhead, apparently in overwatch of the area. “Wait, look out!” His car drives right into a tree. Another car carrying his men overturns, slamming into the side of a large rock. You turn left, all of you screaming as you drive right down a hill and smash right into… a surprisingly good landing.

“Are you okay?” you ask.

“Fine, fine, worst landings than that,” he says. “We split up from here! Regroup at Zeppelin around mountain!” Okay, there’s a plan. You hear some gunshots go off. That isn’t in Kozminsky’s direction so…

Oh no. That’s in the direction of the village.

“Come on.” You dismount out of the car and hop into the bushes. The rest of them follow with you. Skulking through the bushes now, you can’t help but wonder if this was the right decision to make. The gunshots get louder and louder. And you peer through the leaves and the trees to see what seem to be plumes of smoke too. That is not good at all. You all stop at the edge of the village. Sacky tries to get a good view over your shoulder.

What you can see though is the village being massacred by Japanese soldiers. The tribals are held up and shot in the back by firing lines of Japanese troops. They burn out the village huts and tents with flamethrowers. Rana holds her hands over her mouth, gasping quietly. Sumire can only shake her head. “This was a mistake,” she says. “We shouldn’t have come here.”

You nod. “Yeah. But now you understand what could be at stake if we lose, Sumire.” She nods, grim.

Sacky screams, tears in her eyes. With spear and hatchet and hand, she rushes at the Japanese soldiers. They all look over at her, surprised by the sudden arrival of another tribal. Before the Officer can order shots fired, Sacky throws her spear. And it impales right through his throat. The Jap soldiers all back up, frightened by Sacky’s arrival. She catches a fleeing soldier in the back with hatcher, smashing his head in with the stone blade.

“I’m going to help.” Sumire rushes in.

> MAGICAL GIRL LIGHTNING! <

“Rana.” You look over to tell her to stay here. She can’t do much if she’s depowered. But you find her already rushing and shouting like a fury. She picks up a pistol and fires wildly at the Japanese soldiers.

Revenge is a fickle thing. Ugh. You hurry in yourself.

After a brief skirmish and massacring the soldiers, you meet with Sacky in the center of the village. She is sitting down, tears in her eyes, mumbling to herself in her strange language. You feel like part of this is your fault. Maybe if you left the island alone or done something different you could have cleanly let the villagers live on without fear of being destroyed like this. Sumire and Rana stand beside you. “We should go,” says Sumire.

“We can’t just leave her here,” says Rana.

“I don’t see why we can’t, there’s no way she’ll survive in our world,” Sumire says. To be perfectly frank, Sumire has a point. It took decades to bring the Native Americans into the fold of the United States. How is Sacky going to react being thrust into a new world?

You sit down next to Sacky. “Sacky.” You place your hand on her shoulder, biting your lip. How do you phrase this? You haven’t had to comfort people after they just lost what was essentially their home, their family, and their livelihood all at once. You have to think this through. “Do you want to come with us? To America?”

Sumire is quick to remind you: “She can’t speak English you putz.”

Oh. Right.

Well you’re not leaving her here. She’s still just a kid.

“Come on.” You take her hand, standing her up. She wipes the tears out of her eyes, her shoulders shuddering as she sobs quietly. “We’ll get you out of here.” She squeaks a bit, still trying to understand the situation. “Back to the car.” Sumire and Rana nod, hurrying with you to the car. You take one last look back at the village, grimacing. These people wanted to eat this morning. Hard to believe what’s happened now.

You speed right into the clearing beneath the Spirit of Fire. The crew are already hastily trying to get aboard. “Come on, come on!” yells Kozminsky. He looks down at Sacky, who you carry into the Zeppelin. “Who the hell is that!?”

“Long story,” you say. Sumire and Rana run up the gang plank in front of you. “Where are the krauts?”

“Not too far behind us, but if we make a run for it now, we might be able to outrun them,” he says. You and him start climbing the gangplank, being the last ones aboard. “But we can’t make the United States with half of our engines gone, so we have to make a repair stop first!”

“Okay, we can stop in Australia then!”

“Um.” Captain Kozminsky pauses at the door. “I cannot go back to Australia.” You stare at him, incredulous. “Let us just say that Australia does not like me as a person. But we can go to India.”

“We can’t go to India!” you shout. “The IJN’s going to be blocking all our routes north!” You step into the Zeppelin and head for the bridge. “We have to go east and make for America!”

“You don’t understand,” he says. “We only have limited fuel! We can’t cross the Pacific with limited fuel and on half engine strength! We will be caught by the weather!” Ugh, he’s got a point.

“Captain. Australia is close. I am not going to risk the ship running an IJN blockade. We go to Australia, get things fixed, and then we leave.” He grumbles, walking alongside you into the bridge. “Are we in good shape to outrun the interceptors?”

“Well, you blew a couple during last night apparently, so they can’t do too much damage to us.” He sighs. “We should be okay.” He rubs his face, grimacing apparently at the thought of having to go back to Australia.

“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to the authorities,” you say. “Just fly the ship. How long will it take us to get to Australia?” you ask.

“Could be until tonight. We’re slowed up, remember?” Oh right. “You just hang on, we’re going to start take off.” You nod at that. Looks like you are finally in the clear! You raise your arms up as you leave the bridge to Captain Kozminsky. You could sure use a rest.

Sumire sits at your desk while Rana eats meat out of a can in your room. What are you are doing right now is looking through the Atlas. You have already debriefed Operator #5 on the situation, and told him you are going to make a brief stop in Australia to repair the Zeppelin, and hopefully make it out scot free. “Very well,” he said. “I’ll hold off an acquiring transport for you, I’m confident you can make it back to the United States of your own accord. If you need help though, do not hesitate to ask. I will be watching.”

Now though, you were curiously browsing through the Atlas. Planets, planets of all kinds. Some bigger the Eearth, some smaller than Earth, some were oval shaped, some had rings, others on tilted axis, it was like some sort of astronomer’s dream. And you were careful not to do anything other than flip through pages. What kind of thing was this, that had the power to raise and destroy worlds at the touch of a finger? Right now you could sink Nazi Germany and Japan and be done with it. But no. Even you realize that this is far too much power for any one person.

Sumire leans back in her chair, groaning. “I’m bored. Can we play with the Atlas?”

“This is not a toy, Sumire,” you snarl. She holds her hands up defensively, noticing your tone. “This is an artifact of extreme power. We need to treat it like one. Now..” You shut the book quickly. “Look. Whoever built this, whatever this is, nobody can be allowed to have it but us.”

Kirby floats into the room, resting on your shoulder. “Liberty is right. This artifact is of extreme importance. No one but us and be allowed to possess it. And it is only because we have no intention of using it. Not even the highest echelons of the US government are aware such a thing exists. If they did, such power would surely fall into the wrong hands.” Rana nods, grim, but agreeing to that sentiment.

Sumire sighs. “Still boring.” She had to change into new clothes since she lost her old ones in the mountains. You can probably give her some credit for today considering all she had to go through.

“How are we doing with Sacky?” asks Rana.

“Sacagawea is being silent in her room at current,” says Kirby. “She has locked herself in but I am able to communicate with her and at least be there for her to vent her feelings.”

“Wait.” You squint at him. “Why couldn’t you translate what she was saying for us? And vice versa? You did that for the disguise scenario.”

“Like I have said before, I do not believe in you using me so unnecessarily. Their language, you will learn,” he says. Great. You have a picky Messenger who thinks you can learn a language in a couple of days. You look over at Sumire, who smirks. Oh don’t you start too. “If it's any consolation, I believe you made the right decision bringing her with you. There was nothing left for her back on the island. I will go check on her again, be safe.” He disappears in a cloud of smoke.

“So, Australia then,” says Sumire. “Been there once, got arrested there before.” Oh right, you remember Sumire telling you that story. “What’s the plan?”

Safest. And lets him stay only briefly so as to avoid authorities.

Koz won't leave without his ship, and we can't even begin to trust alternate shipping channels to get the Atlas to the USA. The Atlas can never leave our possession until we land on American soil.

Kozminsky is a reliable guy, for a Russian.

We can always call on the fact that Australia was an ally of the US at the time.

If the government gets uppity, Libby can say that Kozminsky's current safety is a matter of (inter)national security.

“We land, get the engines fixed, cruise on back to the US. Simple.”

“We’re not gonna bail on Kozminsky?” asks Sumire.

“No. He’s been reliable so far. I at least want him to see the job through.” Sumire seems a bit skeptical of that fact. But you don’t blame her you suppose. Who gets banned from the entire country of Australia after all? Whatever, it’ll be water under the bridge if you have anything to do with it. “Once the engines are fixed, we speed on back to California. It’s a simple plan, and the Atlas remains firmly in our hands the entire time.”

“Alright!” Rana smiles. She stands up. “Well, I should leave you two alone then. It’s getting late.” You look out the window, and indeed you do see that sun has already gone down. Night time has arrived. You wonder if it’s day time over in the US. Hell, you’re probably missing a night game or something. Damn. “Toodaloo!” She shuts the door behind her.

Sumire sits down on the bed next to you, clutching a pillow. “So, Libby. How’s the chest?”

“Doing okay,” you say. You gently pat it, flinching a little, not from the wound but from the Shard. “She actually hit me right here but I recovered from it just fine. That’s progress at least.”

“Good, good.” She taps it, giggling a bit. You slap her away, grimacing at the pain of it. “So, you think once we’re done, you can get it removed?”

“I don’t know,” you say. “I hope Doctor K has a solution for it when we get back. If he doesn’t, I guess I’ll just have to live with the fact that this thing is stuck in me until I die.” Sumire nods, her smile fading a little bit. “Don’t worry about me though, Sumire. You should worry about yourself like you always do.”

She hugs you, groaning. “Aw come on! I worry about you sometimes!”

You smile a little, a pink to your cheeks coming up. “Really?”

“Sure, you sign my paychecks after all!” Your smile disappears. Really? She grabs a blanket and then immediately lies back into bed. “Well, I’m gonna get an early start on some sleep. You should too, Libby.” She turns over, yawning a bit. “Good night.”

You sit on the edge of the bed, holding the Atlas in your lap. Something tells you this came easy.

Way too easy.
