Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. The world slowly smoldered as the Air Nomads were eradicated by the Fire Nation, leaving nothing but empty homes in their wake. The Fire Nation has already started a full-scale campaign on the Southern Water Tribe, beginning the cycle of death anew.

Fifty years this war has raged, scorching the forests and destroying lives. Many have died and all hope of the Avatar's return has been extinguished, but life goes on. The walls of Ba Sing Se, Omashu, and the Northern Water Tribe have held the Fire Nation at bay, seemingly nothing can penetrate them. As always, there is also solace in wandering.

But this isn't a story about the Avatar, or a king, or even a hero, this is the story of Kuo, a wandering Firebender.

You didn't know Vorlash could hang up on you, and you feel very annoyed that he did. The least he could do after living inside of YOUR body is explain a bit about why he's there. Pushing it right now doesn't seem like a great idea, so you resolve to bring it up again later. Your mind drifts to other things.

There should be a festival starting in a few hours, The Dragon Festival, and you have a few ideas on what to do. You could go convince the rest of the crew to go and you could walk around in costume or normally and see the sights, you heard that this festival is something else, even the Fire Sages are coming! Your mind flashes back to Crescent Island, but only the man at the door even knows you exist. Another option is going alone, out of costume, and trying to find some interesting things to do and people to meet. Maybe you can even impress some people with your travelling stories like you did in Vim Sum Bay a while ago. The only other option that comes to mind is staying here and training or reading, but that might be a squandered opportunity.

Three hours until sundown and the start of The Dragon Festival.

Since you're going to be leaving soon anyway, you might as well make sure your friends aren't upset at you. Everyone seems to agree heartily to going, but Utaaq decides to stay with Kim until he comes down off the medicine he bought. Eventually, you have to go get Cado, and you hear a lot of odd sounds from behind the training room door. Worrying for your friend, you open the door.

Inside you see Cado with what looks like flaming claws on his hand going to town on a metal dummy. Every time he hits the dummy with an open-handed swipe, the metal shows deeper and deeper scratches, his hands aren't even red. You never realized the level of control Cado has over firebending. He looks over at you.

"Again, seriously Kuo? You need to learn to knock. At least you weren't here earlier, don't want you knowing about my entirely new technique. I got this idea from some of the things my dad taught me. Before you ask, no, I'm not going to teach it to you. Nothing personal, just don't want to spread stuff like this too much, it can really hurt you if you don't have experience with it."

"Okay... do you want to go to The Dragon Festival? The rest of us were going to go."

"Oh, that's today? I lost track, sure Kuo. Were you planning on us going in costume or normally?" He looks at you with an exhausted sigh.

"No, then we'd have to be in character the entire time, and that might backfire with Jui."

"Yeah, I see what you mean. Well then, let's get ready and go, I need to change, meet you in the room."

You go back to your room where Mae and Jui are also getting ready, Jui getting into a dull beige set of clothes with a wrap of cloth similar to other Sandbender's clothes you saw in the Si-Wong Desert. Mae seems to be putting on the average dark reds of the Fire Nation, like most colonists in the Earth Kingdom, the clothes look homemade. You put on your regular clothing, a plain tan outfit that is very loose, giving you the appearance of some sort of travelling merchant. You pick up your pipe and walking stick and head out the door with Jui and Mae, Cado joining in with your group wearing a rather ostentatious, bright hue of red.

The streets are festooned with booths and stalls of all colors, the air filled with the sounds of chatter among crowds and the ringing of windchimes from a booth selling them for all they're worth. A large stage has been erected in the town square and standing on it are actors attempting an act you don't recognize. Set up on the side of that stage is a smaller one, advertizing a "platypus" as a show. At first yu think that the word "bear" fell off the end, but when you get closer you see a small, odd creature with the head of a platypus-bear, but no large claws or the like.

A man is playing a large drum on the street with a pan out for collecting money, filled with copper pieces. The beat thrums through the fiber of your being, reverberating in your chest. Jui walks to the stage with stars in his eyes, while Mae goes to the strange animal. Cado begins walking towards the man with the drum.

Those are too big to get into wacky antics though. Appa was in a lot less episodes than Momo, because when they're that big, you just can't have them as pets. They're transportation.

You can't have a pet elephant. At a certain point, animals become too big. Pretty much anything you can ride.
>>
>>43020691
A fire ferret is boring though
>>
>>43020705
Not when it's possessed by a fire spirit.

Anyway, it doesn't have to be a fire ferret. It could be a fucking mix of a corgi and a crocodile, based on what animals are like in this world.
>>
You walk to the stage and stand next to Jui, who seems thoroughly enthralled by what now seems to be a performance art piece that you don't quite understand. It seems like an interpretive dance of some kind, but it appears to be a rather poor one, as you have no clue what to interpret it as. It seems like the dancer is just flailing about as if throwing a tantrum about nothing. The one feeling you get from the dance is a sense of impotent rage and a pathetic lust for approval.

Jui seems to slowly lose his smile and lapses into a look of disgust, the rest of the crowd does the same and begins throwing rotten fruit and debris at the dancer. He appears to cry and run off stage, saying something about proving something. The crowd seems angry, but a rowsing beat begins coming from the big drum the man was using before, the sound bouncing through the plaza. You look over and Cado is playing the drum with a speed and strength that you've never seen before, flourishing the stick and repeatedly rolling it on the head of the drum.

The crowd begins putting copper pieces in the pan and the old man who was originally playing the drum is smiling in joy. Cado finishes up his song, shakes the man's hand, and walks to the platypus booth.

What just happened?

You walk over to the "platypus" booth and see that it has that strange creature in a tank with a shelf and water around that, this thing can swim? That's crazy, why would something like this ever exist? You walk over to Cado and he seems to be looking at a bird quizzically. It has a large beak and extremely long neck, but it still appears to be able to fly. It reminds you of a pelican-fish, but you can tell it definitely isn't a fish.

"Where'd you learn to do that Cado?"

He turns to you and gives a coy smile. "I learned it growing up. My parents made me take lessons."

That doesn't exactly sate your curiosity, but it doesn't seem like you're going to get anything more right now. A small animal catches your eye, it looks like an average squirrel at first glance, but then it leaps across the booth and glides on flaps under its arms. Why can it fly? Why would any of these things ever exist in the same world as you? How come that squirrel can airbend?

This booth seems to leave you with more questions than answers. A large gong signals the arrival of something on the stage.

Curious about what the gongs are signalling, you walk out to the stage. You see a man dressed in ornate clothing hammering a gong with the Fire Nation crest emblazoned on it. To what end, you do not know. Then a procession of Fire Sages walk out of the area behind the stage, each seeming to be more venerable than the last. At the end of the procession, an ancient man whose eyes are dimmed with age is accompanied by a young man dressed in similar clothes who holds a small bundle of cloth in the crook of his arm. They walk off to the side and form a long path of Sages.

Walking from behind the stage is a regal figure accompanied by a woman, the man is someone you recognize almost immediately. You've seen his face on more posters around here than you can shake a stick at. This is Fire Lord Azulon, and you can only guess that the woman next to him is their wife. Trailing behind them you see a small boy, no more than ten, in royal attire. The crowd cheers until Azulon raises his hand and a silence falls over them.

"People of the Fire Nation, I come before you today after a trip to Crescent Island, as the Fire Sages are the backbone of our society. We discussed at length many things, however this was not only a meeting, but a joyous occasion. Last week, my wife Ilah gave birth to a healthy boy, and so I sought the council of the Fire Sages for what my son shall be named. As Iroh was named by them at Crescent Island, Great Sage Shinzen wished to, under persuasion from his aide, name my son in front of his people. So let the reading and naming of my son commence!" The man speaks in an even tone and the crowd hangs on every word he says.

The old Sage and his aide walk to the center of the stage and the wizened sage who is supposedly your uncle begins speaking softly. His aide repeats his words, "This child is destined to lead the Fire Nation to greatness and his flame burns bright, he will be an ambitious leader among men. He will be a great military man, taking many victories for his people, I see the banners of our nation on the walls of Omashu. He will proudly carry the burden of his duty. And he shall be named... Ozai." The people cheer at the last word and the Fire Lord walks over and is given the cloth in the aide's hands. The procession filters out the back and the crowd is kept back from the rulers by royal guards.

That was less dissapointing than the last show.

You begin walking through the streets and the flow of people thins, there are still more booths and carts but they seem to be less ornate and obviously cheaper than the exorbitant rates around the plaza. Most of them are definitely homegrown businesses, you see tailors, farmers, crafts, even a few artists selling paintings. The people crowding around here seem in less of a rush than at the square and there are more buildings with lights on, most of them houses, but some small shops.

A ruckus erupts from inside a shop and a man kicks a small animal out of his door while screaming words you didn't know could be strung together at it. The bundle of fur bolts towards the nearest person to it, which happened to be you. The small animal, that you now recognize as a Wolf-Raccoon, worms its way into your bag and peers out with a look of fright on its wolf-like face. It whimpers slightly.

Reeling from the shock, you step back and bump into a remarkably sturdy person, you hear a slight clang of metal and a shout from behind you.

"HALT! Who dares approach the procession of the Sages on their way to their home?!" A large soldier in a menacing white mask glares down at you, blocking you from a line of Sages led by your Uncle. He seems to stare directly past you with milky eyes and whispers to his aide.

"The Great Sage says to let him speak-" Suddenly the ring of an arrow hitting metal rings out over the square and a shaft protrudes from the neck of one of the guards. The Sages begin to run for the shelter of a stall as more arrows rain from the rooftops, one of them striking the Great Sage in the bottom of his robe. He seems to move un-flinchingly, signalling that the arrow missed his leg.

This was not what you had planned today, but you need to help the sages, so you begin blowing steam everywhere. The steam begins to well out of your mouth and the air starts to get hazy, but you're too late to stop an arrow from striking the Great Sage directly in his chest. The rest of the sages are able to get out with no injuries thanks to your steam, and the aide grabs the Great Sage's body, but you are left looking for the archer on the rooftops. This task is made even harder by your steam that is only now clearing, your mouth parched. You think you see a flash of metal from a rooftop, but it's gone as quickly as it appeared.

The wolf-raccoon pokes its head out of your bag and sniffs around, sniffing your hand with vigor. You try not to startle it and take a bit of bread you have left from when you were in the desert, breaking off a piece of the brittle loaf. The wolf-raccoon sniffs at it for a second, then eats it out of your hand and makes a small bark as you feel its tail wag in your bag. It seems you made a new friend.

You go where you think the Sages went and you see them boarding a ferry to Crescent Island. The aide has your Uncle hanging over his shoulder and seems to be speaking with him frantically. As the ship leaves the port, you see the young man put him down and start weeping. You wish you could have been faster.

You begin walking to a shop where you could buy some food for your new pet that won't spoil over time. and you make it to a small booth where a man wearing a butcher's outfit is selling jerky. He sells everything from salmon-trout to lizard-pig, so you get some lizard-pig jerky and feed some to your friend, he nibbles on it a bit and eventually picks it up with his paws. Wolf-raccoons have thumbs to hold stuff and he begins taking hearty bites out of the strip, pulling it with his paws. You buy enough for a while and pick up a small bowl from another stall and pay for it. You pour him some water from your canteen and drink the rest of it, rehydrating from your efforts. The wolf-raccoon slinks out of your bag and begins lapping up the water.

The rest of the night goes by without much event, the festival seems to die down after midnight, and you eventually make your way home. You open the door to an empty hall and go to your room. Mae is snoring above your bunk and Jui seems to be out like a rock, but Cado is sitting in his bunk looking at a paper by firelight.

"Hey Cado."

He quickly puts the paper away and waves at you. "Hey Kuo, what took you?"

"I got a pet and... what were you looking at?" Cado sighs and dejectedly takes out his paper.

"My dad's troupe is going to be at Ember Island and I haven't seen him for a long time. I don't know how he'll react to my new occupation. He always wanted me to be a magician, or at least a musician." He puts away the poster and looks at your new pet with curiosity.

"I'm thinking Shinji." The wolf-raccoon wags its tail and in response you pet its head.

"Cool, at least none of us are allergic. I'm going to go to bed. Night Kuo."

"Night."

You change out of your street clothes and get into bed, Shinji hops up and curls up next to you. You fall asleep after a long day off and you get the feeling of burning you normally get when you talk to Vorlash. On cue, your conciousness pulls away and you stand in a black void opposite the spirit. He seems to be looking at you with an apologetic look.

"I HAVE CALMED MORTAL, I NEED TO SET SOME RULES SO THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. FIRST RULE, DO NOT TOUCH ME. SECOND, DON'T ASK ABOUT MY PAST. THIRD, I AM IN CHARGE!" The spirit doesn't seem to get what's going on.

"No, I am the one who controls what I do, not a ferret with anger issues. You can't change that, so get used to it and stop messing with my bending."

"FINE MORTAL, YOU WILL HAVE THAT. NEVER SAY I AM NOT FAIR. I WILL LEAVE FOR NOW. REMEMBER, I AM HERE AGAINST MY WILL AND YOURS. DON'T BLAME ME FOR THIS."

The void falls away leaving you in a haze of sleep, yet still lucid enough to realize a landscape spreading out before you.

You see a great expanse of shelves filled with books, a truly staggering amount of them. You begin walking through the paths between them until you reach what appears to be a spiral staircase. Thinking nothing of it, you start running up the stairs. The stairway goes for what feels like an eternity, but evetually you reach a landing. Looking closely, you see a tether of blue extending to the ceiling from your torso. You must be in the Spirit World, but where, and how are you able to be here for so long?

On the landing you see a window, which you peer out of, revealing a long expanse of sand. You start climbing out of what you now understand to be a tower. Eventually you reach the sand and you can feel the warmth on the soles of your feet. You start getting the receding feeling you normally get when a vision is about to end, so you realx yourself. You prepare to wake up in your room in the morning.

Then the feeling becomes very intense, and you flash into the viewpoint in your room. You bolt up and see that same tether pull you back, quickly you grab onto your bed. The line of energy pulls tight and you black out. You feel like you're being pulled inside out and flipped back in.

You come to in your bed, grasping onto it with white knuckles as Shinji licks you face. You hear Mae snoring, then you feel a breeze. your eyes open quickly, thinking someone left the window open. The sight that greets your eyes is a view all to familiar to you, an expanse of sand, with a tower behing you.

You quickly look around, seeing that your bunk, your stuff, and all of Mae's stuff, conveniently hung on your bunk, all came with you.

You walk up to the tower, the sand warming your bare feet. You place your hand on it and it feels as real as anything else. Then you start trying to climb the tower, however your bare feet can't seem to get a grip. You go back to your pack to put on actual shoes and clothes so you can and Shinji begins to follow you back to the tower. Now that you can get a grip on the tower, you start climbing it. Shinji watches you inquisitively from the bottom of the tower, then he barks at you. Mae wakes up in a flurry of movement.

"Kuo, what's happening, why are we in a desert?! How?!" He starts getting his clothes on and yelling at you from the bottom of the tower as you reach the top.

Shinji starts climbing the tower with a deftness that you wouldn't have expected, but claws in addition to his thumbs seem to make it extremely easy on him.

"Just grab our stuff and get up here! Don't think too hard about it!" You honestly have no clue what happened, so you don't think you could explain it to Mae. Shinji finishes his climb and sits next to you, panting and wagging his tail.

"Uhmm... Okay, give me a second!" He finishes getting dressed, then he grabs your stuff and jumps to the window. The stone sandals he wears are very useful at times like this, and in no time at all your stuff is up top.

"What is this place?"

"It's a library, I checked it out earlier."

"Well, why are we heading in?"

"Beats the desert."

As you descend the stairway, you illuminate the way with your fire, eventually you reach the bottom. You exit the stairs and are immediately startled as a giant barn owl lands in front of you. It stares at you with piercing eyes. Then it speaks.

"Who enters my library?"

Mae jumps back in shock, "Is this your library? We just showed up here! I don't know! I'm Mae! This is Kuo!" The owl chuckles slightly at Mae's unintentional rhyme.

"Well then, in order to enter my library, you must each offer a piece of knowledge I don't yet own." The spirit eyes you and Mae with suspicion.

Mae fumbles with his bag and takes out a poster for the FNFL. "Here! I got this poster from the Fire Nation! Is it good enough?!" He seems to slightly be calming down.

"Acceptable. Now you."

You take out Pai-Sho for Dummies and offer it to the spirit. He looks at it, then back to you, and then the book again and twists his neck quizzically.

"... Is this an insult?"

"Disregard the title, I read it and I was able to beat a master immediately after." The spirit looks at you and twists his head all the way around. Then his eyes narrow and he speaks in a low tone.

"You may enter, but do not use my knowledge in mortal matters. Barring that, refer to my knowledge seekers for any questions on locations." The owl swoops away, leaving you and Mae alone with Shinji.

"What just happened? Was that a spirit?" Mae looks at you with a completely jaded look on his face.

"Yes."

"Fine, whatever, we must be somewhere in the Si Wong Desert. Let's spend some time here, then head to the Earth Kingdom, maybe Omashu so we can get our way to the north and meet Kim as they're there.

"Fair enough."

You find one of the "Knowledge Seekers" the spirit talked about, a foxlike animal, and ask it about your predicament. The animal yips in response and runs through the library, you follow and it leads you to a large aisle labelled "Miscellaneous". It whimpers and trots away. You start sorting through book after book, scroll after scroll, paper after paper. You find almost nothing about spirits being bound, but you find one reference to "Terba", a small paper with a picture of a snake and a description of a bartering spirit.

The entire aisle is upturned by the time you're done, and you have learned nothing you didn't already know. You are led by a Knowledge seeker to Mae, who seems to be reading books about martial arts. He looks at you and says that you can stay here for the night and tomorrow, but that after that you should leave.

You spend the rest of the night looking through the Spirit section.
